SINGAPORE
YOUR EVENT GUIDE SATURDAY 21 MAY 2011
SINGAPORE HAS QUICKLY EMERGED AS A VIBRANT DESIGN CENTRE. A SOPHISTICATED, GLOBAL AND HIGHLY CREATIVE NATION, SINGAPORE EFFORTLESSLY BRIDGES EAST AND WEST, THE PAST AND FUTURE.
We’re proud to be launching Saturday in Design Singapore in such a thriving community. There is so much that is positive, but what makes this industry really hum is the people. There is incredible passion and it’s something to be greatly admired. President of the red dot design museum Singapore, Ken Koo, sets a high bar when he says, “red dot design award and Saturday in Design are both important platforms to promote good design. Each brings with it an invaluable international network and perspective to Singapore, that can only broaden the scope of understanding on the power of design in Singapore and fuel the enthusiasm and energy level of the growing interest in the country.” We’re excited about this momentous occasion and look forward to continuing the tradition for many years to come.

IN PROFILE: STEFAN DIEZ
INTERNATIONAL GUEST, STEFAN DIEZ, TALKS TO US ABOUT THE RED DOT AWARD-WINNING CHASSIS CHAIR.
01
07
Born and educated in Germany, Diez has designed for various manufacturers in the fields of contract furnishings, living and ambience. His latest masterpiece is the Chassis chair for Wilkhahn, the design of which incorporates elements of automotive technology.
IN PROFILE: STEFAN DIEZ
I chanced upon a Brooks bicycle saddle, with a frame, insertion point for the saddle and covered with leather.”
02
Inspired by a bicycle saddle, Stefan Diez began working on a chair with a technical load-bearing structure in steel and covered with a thin, elastic membrane. “I chanced upon a Brooks bicycle saddle, with a frame, insertion point for the saddle and covered with leather,” recalls Diez. “In my opinion this epitomised not just 01, 02, 03 C hassis Chair by Stefan Diez for Wilkhahn
Wilkhahn’s typical combination of technical solutions and design to appeal to people, but also unusual elegance and a lightweight look and feel.” This encounter resulted in the comfortable, elegantly shaped and flawlessly built Chassis, which is at once extremely durable and light, using a minimum of materials.
09
“The design reflects social and cultural contexts, is technologically ground-breaking and open to innovations,” explains Diez. Chassis reflects a shift in workplace design; “Products for homes that reflect desires for individuality and a high level of versatility hardly ever fulfill the high demands made on contract furniture… Changing forms of team work and modern architectural interpretations place the workplace in a category that today’s homes are in,” Diez says. “Chassis’ design was to create a chair that is multi-faceted depending on how and where it‘s used; different facets that can also adapt over the course of time if circumstances change. Wilkhahn has created a product where the customer sets the tone. A chair that will have very different characteristics.”
exception. In other words, Chassis is a domesticated tool.” The Chassis chair is so successful that it was awarded the red dot Best of the Best Award 2011. In town to promote the chair with Wilkhahn at Saturday in Design Singapore, Diez is looking forward to seeing the breadth of local Singapore design and the different approach to workplace design. View the Chassis chair installation by Stefan Diez for Wilkhahn at the red dot design museum: Friday 20 and Saturday 21 May between 11am – 6pm. COMMENT: MARCUS FOLEY
MARCUS FOLEY, CO-FOUNDER OF PDM INTERNATIONAL, HAS THE EXPERIENCE TO OFFER A BROAD VIEW OF SINGAPORE’S DESIGN SCENE.
01
11
The timing is right for Singaporean design to come together and build a stronger community that values professional design practice. Singapore designers and architects have a unique opportunity to drive a new wave of design-led development in the country and across Asia.
COMMENT: MARCUS FOLEY
02
I really hope the Singapore design community comes out in force to show support so this can be a regular fixture.”
With over 25 years experience, Marcus Foley is currently Group Regional Creative Director of PDM International, involved in some of the biggest projects around the region and is an active participant in the design community. 01 Saatchi & Saatchi – Shanghai 02 EMC (Energy Market Co.) – Singapore 03 POSH – Hong Kong
13
03
“The industry has seen tremendous change over the past decade,” he explains. “The design community is facing challenges in designer satisfaction, the high fall-out rate, ability to attract and maintain high-level senior designers as workload and process-driven project delivery increase.” Marcus identifies a trend toward Project Management over design-led development in Singapore as a further challenge, resulting in a decline in professional design fees and a more ‘factory-based’ approach. “Collectively we must stand together and fight for our profession rather than cheapen it in a market run by ultrademanding clients and project managers.”
Marcus sees a great opportunity for Singaporean architects and designers to band together: “In Singapore currently there is no avenue for the design community to have a voice of its own. With the gathering of designers, products and suppliers that are dependent on one another, we hope that collectively we can improve the design industry as a whole.” “With fun and community being the key ingredients of Saturday in Design, I really hope that the Singapore design community comes out in force to show support so that this can be a regular fixture.” Marcus Foley established design company PDM International in Singapore in 1996. Since then, it has developed into a multidisciplinary, full service design company with offices in Bangkok, Beijing, Hong Kong, Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur, Shanghai and Sydney.
PDM International is a Platinum Sponsor of Saturday in Design Singapore. (65) 6438 6833 info@pdmdesign.com pdmdesign.com
