Propelling careers to the fast lane is what the Scott College of Business does best When he began the college search, Tanner Smith, ’18 was unsure about choosing State. But visiting campus—and discovering State’s top-notch academic programs, big scholarships, and established employer connections—made his choice obvious. And four years later, the operations and supply chain management major from Fishers, Indiana, landed a position with the famous luxury car and aero engine manufacturer Rolls-Royce—all before graduation day. Building the foundation for success starts in the classroom, where expert professors help Smith master the information he’ll use on the job. Outside the classroom, Smith enhances those lessons through hands-on experiences that help him polish his real-world business skills—and get ahead in his career. So when Smith needed to convince a top executive at Rolls-Royce North America to present the keynote address at State’s annual Networks Ethics Conference, this Sycamore was more than up to the task. “There’s a big emphasis on learning how to speak well and gaining confidence with talking to people you might not know,” said Smith, a recipient of the President’s Scholarship and participant in the Networks Professional Development Program. “It’s a valuable skill because I’ve been lucky to meet powerful and successful people through the College—and those connections made it easier to get my foot in the door.”

Get ahead of the competition with super-charged professional development Christopher Moghadam didn’t become a polished business management scholar overnight. He’s been laying the foundation for his career since freshmen year, thanks to the Meis Student Development Center in the Scott College of Business. “When Sycamores like me apply for jobs, the skills taught through the Meis Center help us get into the workforce by being prepared on a different level,” said Moghadam, a junior from Cloverdale, Indiana, and student mentor at the Meis Center. “Success is about more than simply attending class and getting a bachelor’s degree.” Dozens of workshops and events hosted by faculty, staff, student mentors, and outside professionals allow students to practice core career competencies. Think: networking with business professionals, understanding emotional intelligence, negotiating a job offer, enhancing one’s social media presence, and more. Together with State’s strong business programs and the Meis Center, dedicated Sycamores become standout job candidates. “I learned the little things you don’t always think about before going to a job interview that can make a big difference,” said marketing major Kelsey Darin,’17, now a product developer at McGraw-Hill Education. “I’m using what I’ve learned through the Meis Center more and more.”

Experience your career— before you graduate—with unique hands-on opportunities Seth Biggs sat alone with a panel of judges and a video camera staring at him. The junior business management major steeled himself for a tough battle when the “buyer” appeared nonchalant during a sales competition at Bryant University in Rhode Island. “I had to bring in data and other knowledge on the fly [to convince him to buy],” said Biggs of Terre Haute, Indiana “It’s an experience I know will help me with sales negotiations when I’m in a management position someday. These are lessons you only learn outside the classroom.” Team faculty advisor Dave Fleming sees firsthand how the Indiana State Sales Team—a group of Sycamores who compete at sales competitions against other universities —is a one-of-a-kind experience. “Competitions are an opportunity for students to grow, find out if sales is right for them, be seen by employers, and make connections,” Fleming said. And thanks to the skills she learned, senior marketing major Sarah Powers is headed to United Rentals’ sales development program after graduation. “Competitions allow us to apply what we’ve learned and get feedback from professionals,” said the Paris, Illinois, native. “The Scott College of Business helps students develop a skill set that is transferrable to a career path – not just a job.”

Ramp up your business education with the allinclusive Networks Program Leaders aren’t simply born. They’re developed through unique opportunities like the Networks Professional Development Program. “The four-year professional development and leadership program is an intensive and in-depth experience focused on developing future financial services and business industry leaders,” said Rebecca Wray, Networks Program director. The program incorporates many perks—corporate and faculty mentors, access to internships, industry visits, international travel, professional conferences, leadership opportunities, personalized interview prep, and more. Plus, members are eligible for a full-tuition scholarship and $3,000 professional development account. “It was an excellent opportunity to further my business education outside of the classroom,” said Miguel de la Rosa, ’13, marketing major and project director at My Super Marketer. “And by traveling abroad, I was able to expand my view of the world and how business is handled overseas.” “Through Networks, I was fortunate to be mentored by Mike Alley, then president of State’s Board of Trustees,” said Kristen Booe, ’10, who earned her degree in management and now works at Deloitte Consulting. “He supported my goals, provided invaluable guidance, and connected me with opportunities and professionals during and after my job search. He is an advocate for me to this day.”

Travel on a mind-expanding faculty-led trip to see business in a new place—and in a new way Olivia Havenor entered her freshman year at State an insurance major interested in studying entrepreneurship and ethics. Within her first six months on campus, the Plainfield, Indiana native was off to Thailand to learn about both—and so much more. “During a two-week trip to Chiang Mai, Thailand, I fell in love with the people, the food, and the climate—something I did not expect going in,” Havenor said. A visit to Nati Sang’s Makerspace Thailand left a lasting impression. The Americanborn Chiang Mai innovator welcomes other visionaries to his workshop where they have the space, technology, and capital to develop their inventions. “What you take with you from that kind of experience is to always keep an open mind,” Havenor said. “Just because something isn’t done like you’re accustomed to it doesn’t mean it’s the wrong way. It’s just a different way of looking at it.” The trip was co-led by Professor Aruna Chandra, who intentionally stacks her study abroad experiences with a mix of academics, culture, history and personal interaction. “They’re in a living classroom the whole time when they’re there. They’re learning — every single minute they’re awake, they’re learning about the country, its culture, they’re gaining a new perspective,” Chandra said. “It kind of shakes them out of their complacent worldview to see how a different country operates. So they’re learning without knowing they’re learning—how much better can it get?”

Our graduates are business leaders who drive innovation, making a positive impact on local (and global) communities. A key to success is staying organized. But Carina DeMoura Lawson, ’04, realized most organizational tools on the market, focused only on daily tasks and checkmarks, often fail to help us craft meaningful lives. The Brazilian native with roots in the Middle East turned the dilemma into an opportunity. She tapped the savvy she gained as a business management and business administration major at State to launch Ponderlily in 2017, an international planner and stationery start-up based in the United Kingdom. Ponderlily’s products help people live with intention and balance by focusing on “to-be” lists that prioritize what matters most. “As a student in the Scott College of Business, we were taught everything from business theory to business etiquette,” Lawson said. “The university equipped me with the business training that made me excel in my professional life and shaped my appreciation for logistics and the importance of excellent customer service.” Plus, opportunities across campus—including serving as a residential hall assistant, mailroom worker, and tutor — gave Lawson hands-on experience in operational management, training programs, safety, and other key areas that enhanced her business knowledge. “Indiana State educates the whole student,” Lawson said.
