History Created by an act of the Indiana General Assembly in 1865, Indiana State University began offering courses as Indiana State Normal School in January 1870. Established to prepare teachers for the public schools of Indiana, the Normal School’s first freshman class consisted of only 23 students.
With the addition of graduate and doctoral programs, Indiana State College achieved university status and became Indiana State University in 1965. This university status led to the development of additional new programs and degrees including programs in nursing, business, social work, fine arts, and technology.
In 1907, Indiana State Normal School began offering a four-year curriculum and quickly gained a reputation for excellence in training teachers. This success was recognized when the school’s name was changed to Indiana State Teachers College in 1929.
While much has changed since 1865, throughout its history, Indiana State has remained focused on providing a quality education that combines classroom experience and exciting opportunities for hands-on learning while maintaining an active leadership role as part of the Terre Haute and Wabash Valley communities. During the middle part of the century, the college continued its growth as the curriculum expanded beyond the field of education, and in 1960 the college officially became known as Indiana State College.

Traditions Blue and White
Homecoming
In 1899, it was announced that Yale blue and white would replace the colors of salmon pink and white as the school’s official colors.
The term Homecoming was first used in print announcements for the Alumni-Varsity Basketball Game on December 9, 1916. By the year 1919, this event had became known as Blue and White Day and featured dances and entertainment for alumni of the Normal School. In 1921, the events were organized around a football game scheduled in the autumn. Bonfires and pep rallies were added to the festivities in 1922; the Blue and White Parade in 1923; and in 1937 Bette Whitmore (Kappa Kappa) was elected ISU’s first Homecoming Queen.
Book and Torch The book and torch are official symbols of the University and are featured in its seal. The book symbolizes knowledge and truth and the torch symbolizes the light of inspiration.
Donaghy Day
Traditions
Donaghy Day, named after Fred Donaghy, graduate of the Normal School (1912) and a professor of life sciences, was initiated in 1976 as a day set aside for the community to celebrate spring and to work to help beautify the campus and surrounding community.
Mascot In 1995, the University introduced Sycamore Sam to the ISU family. The blue-and-white creature is a favorite among young and old alike.

In 1921, a contest was held to pick a name for the athletics teams at what was then called Indiana State Normal School. Until that time, the term “Fighting Teachers” was frequently used in press accounts of athletic contests. In January 1922, it was announced that the name Sycamores had won a popular vote of the student body. Indiana State University has used this team name ever since.
The Indiana State Tricycle Derby was first held in 1963 as a ten-lap race around the sidewalks of the Quadrangle on children’s tricycles. The races now feature men’s and women’s teams racing on specially built tricycles. For more information visit

Tandem This student-organized race was first conducted as part of Spring Week activities in 1970. Teams today are comprised of co-ed pairs who compete on tandem bicycles.

Academics
Formerly the Emeline Fairbanks Memorial Library, Terre Haute’s public library, this exceptional example of Beaux Arts Classicism was constructed of Indiana limestone. Purchased by Indiana State in 1979, the building was renamed Fairbanks Hall. In 1984 the hall was remodeled for classroom and studio use by ISU’s Department of Art. Remaining from the original library, a stained glass dome continues to dominate the building’s central rotunda.

“My favorite professor I have had so far at Indiana State is Dr. Mike Chambers. He was actually the first college professor that I experienced at ISU, and he taught my political science course. Dr. Chambers taught with such enthusiasm. His sense of humor and his ability to reach out to students was enough to make even students who didn’t like political science become eager to learn about the various topics. His class also taught me valuable lessons that I will carry on with me as I enter the business industry later down the road.

The ISU Plan is a prepaid system of credits and cash that lets you eat in a dining hall, choose from a variety of meal times, and save money, time and the effort of preparing your own meals.

Commons Cash As part of purchasing the ISU Plan you also receive Commons Cash—a specified amount of money (usually about $100 per semester) that can be used to eat in the Commons food court of Hulman Memorial Student Union. You pay for the ISU Plan as part of your residence hall fees. Over 1,300 credits will be applied to your student ID card each semester to be used to purchase meals in the dining halls. Jump Start on Success The University’s New Student Orientation Program will bring you (and your family) to campus before fall classes begin. Orientation is designed to introduce you to our diverse academic programs, the advising and registration process, University traditions, and campus pride. These programs are compulsory for all first-time new students. Parents and families are encouraged to attend as well. Before arriving on campus for orientation, you will take an on-line placement examination. This is designed to inform your advisors of how best to prepare you for your chosen field of study.
Once on campus, you will: • Meet and form friendships with your new classmates • Stay overnight in a residence hall.
