With the help of donors around the world, we are making a bold impact at Indiana State University. Our alumni, corporate partners, and friends continue to impress us as they generously give and transform the lives of current and future Sycamores with their thoughtful gifts. This was an awe-inspiring year. In the 2023 fiscal year, we surpassed the $30 million fundraising milestone for the first time and we received the largest gift made by an individual in institutional history with an $8 million donation to name the Bailey College of Engineering and Technology. Together, we have impacted the lives of students for years to come as we made history and transcended goals. In this year’s annual report, we have featured the Division of University Advancement’s student workers from the 2022-2023 academic year, along with some of our donors who embody what it means to Be So BOLD. BAILEY COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY The Bailey College of Engineering and Technology was established in 2022 with an $8 million gift by 1970 alumnus Steve Bailey and his wife Gloria to further advance the university’s dedication to STEM education, the strength of its engineering program, and its support of the state of Indiana’s workforce goals. The donation will create scholarships, faculty fellowships, and support a Dean’s fund to attract even more hard-working students and faculty. Steve graduated with a degree in automotive technology and led Diesel USA Group as CEO until his retirement in 2019. He serves on the Bailey College of Engineering and Technology Dean’s Advisory Council and the ISU Foundation Board of Directors. Gloria worked in interior design and human resources before her retirement in 2014. In 2020, she helped Interior Architecture Design students at ISU redesign and furnish the atrium in the John T. Myers Technology Center. The Baileys, who live in Naples, Florida, and Louisville, Kentucky, are loyal supporters of ISU and have been heavily involved in advancing engineering and technology students through their generous donations. In 2022, the Baileys were honored as March On! Award recipients in recognition of their philanthropy to ISU.

Indiana State University achieved an unprecedented milestone, having raised $30,017,943 in fiscal year 2023. This marks the highest annual fundraising amount in the university’s history and represents the first time ISU has surpassed the $30 million mark in any given year. More than 6,800 donors made financial contributions in the last year; 1,200 of which were recognized as members of the President’s Society, contributing at least $1,000 in the fiscal year. Nineteen new endowed funds were created, which continually enhance scholarship support and help our students achieve their dreams of earning a college degree.
James and Pamela ’89 Poore established the James and Pamela Poore First-Gen Scholarship to support students attending Indiana State University from the Indianapolis Public School District. They have made their home and business in Indianapolis and understand the importance of providing scholarship support to deserving students who need additional financial assistance to continue their education.

The College of Health and Human Services received a $300,000 gift from Union Health to fund a Nursing Student Success Center and the Union Health Nursing Skills Lab to support ISU students while creating a larger pipeline of nursing employees for Union Health. Union Health exists to serve patients with compassionate healthcare of the highest quality. The hospital has had a longstanding partnership with Indiana State University since 1950, when the college affiliated with Union Hospital School of Nursing to offer a Bachelor of Science in nursing. Since then, Union Health has continued to support ISU in a multitude of capacities to create opportunities for nursing students.
Sycamore baseball alumnus and 8-year major league player, Sean Manaea, made a $125,000 gift to the university’s baseball team as a part of a donor challenge on Indiana State University’s fifth annual Give to Blue Day. This generous donation highlights Manaea’s unwavering commitment to his alma mater and the advancement of ISU’s baseball program.

“Getting to see the joy giving back to ISU brings donors, and the impact it has on campus, was my favorite part of my role as a student worker in the ISU Foundation. It was bittersweet saying goodbye, as I worked in the office since December of 2019, but I’m grateful for the opportunities this university provided me. The impact of the President’s Scholarship transformed my education and allowed me to pursue my personal passions as a student leader. It gave me the opportunity to develop professional experiences outside the classroom, as well as networks that helped me earn an internship and full-time position post-graduation.” — Sam Bowen ’23 Sam is an alumnus with a degree in finance and financial services and a minor in human capital management. He was a recipient of the Networks Scholarship and the President’s Scholarship and has demonstrated exemplary leadership skills in roles pertaining to the Student Government Association, STATE Dance Marathon, Pi Kappa Alpha, and the Student Philanthropy Organization. He spearheaded the inaugural Rich and Robin Porter Cancer Research Run as a part of his student position in the Division of University Advancement and within the Student Philanthropy Organization.
STUDENT EXPERIENCES AND FACULTY EXCELLENCE IN THE SCOTT COLLEGE OF BUSINESS Darwin McCallian, a 1975 alumnus of the College of Arts and Sciences, has stepped up during the Be So BOLD fundraising campaign to support Sycamores for years to come with a $1.225 million gift. McCallian graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science and Economics from Indiana State University. $225,000 of his gift will establish the Darwin McCallian Executive Leadership Forum Endowment. This forum will bring influential thought leaders to the Scott College of Business (SCOB) to share their leadership philosophy, business expertise, professional experiences, and career journeys with students, faculty, and the campus community. The remaining $1 million of his gift is a commitment in his estate and will establish the Darwin McCallian Endowed Professor of Business. In consort with the Darwin McCallian Executive Leadership Forum, this endowed position aims to raise the visibility and stature of Indiana State University and the Scott College of Business.

“I am appreciative of my experience at ISU because it gave me an education beyond the classroom through my position as a Senior Accounting Student Assistant at the Foundation. Indiana State University has not only set me up for success in my career but has given me the opportunity to start my future where it all began.” — Jordan Vanzo ’23 Jordan worked on the finance team for two years before graduating in 2023 with an accounting degree. During his time in the Scott College of Business, he was actively involved in the business fraternity, Delta Sigma Pi. Jordan’s hard work and dedication set him apart and post-graduation, he accepted the position of Assistant Director of Finance for the Division of University Advancement.

UNIVERSITY LEADERSHIP SETS A BOLD PHILANTHROPIC EXAMPLE Kathy Cabello served as Chair of the Indiana State University Board of Trustees from 2021-2023. She and her husband Eddy created the Kathy G. and Eddy Cabello Endowed Scholarship to provide support to Latino and Hispanic students pursuing undergraduate degrees at Indiana State. With the creation of this scholarship, the couple hopes to financially assist students from Latino and Hispanic communities to follow their dreams of obtaining a college degree. In addition to inspiring the scholarship recipients to have philanthropic spirits, Kathy and Eddy also have the goal of inspiring others to give back. Rich Porter ’77 served as Chair of the Indiana State University Foundation from 20212023. He and his wife Robin have been intrinsically involved in supporting causes across Indiana State University’s campus. Most recently, they established the Rich and Robin Porter Endowed Master’s in Nursing Scholarship. In recognition of the gift, the Rich and Robin Porter Nursing Skills Lab was named in the College of Health and Human Services. The Porters’ daughter Michelle and son-in-law Max are Advanced Practice Nurses and Certified Nurse Practitioners at the James Cancer Center at Ohio State University, which is where their passion for this gift originated. Due to the bold example set forth by University leaders like Kathy Cabello and Rich Porter, Indiana State University can continually better the Sycamore experience. 20 | PHILANTHROPY IMPACT

“When we visited campus in the fall, we were able to tour multiple areas in the Theater Department and see the meticulous work being done behind-the-scenes. Having some background in stagecraft and costuming, we were very impressed that these areas were geared to allow students to have first-hand experiences in every facet of drama production while in school. Alicia was so engaged in her explanations of how each area was used—we know that with this gift, she and Indiana State University can develop and enhance each student’s journey in the arts, and their futures.” — Billy Joe and Nerissa Jay Billy Joe and Nerissa Jay, avid supporters of arts and education, made a generous gift of $100,000 to Indiana State University’s Theater Department on Give to Blue Day. This gift was made in honor of their daughter-inlaw Dr. Alicia Jay, Assistant Professor of Theater Management and Administration at ISU. The Jays’ gift reflects their strong belief in the revitalizing power of the arts and their commitment to ensuring future generations have access to hands-on, creative experiences. Billy Joe and Nerissa envision a world where individuals from all backgrounds can express themselves through the fine arts, fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation of diverse cultures and emotions. Alicia has played a significant role in Billy Joe and Nerissa’s connection to the arts. In the summer of 2021, the Department of Theater’s summer program, Crossroads Repertory Theatre, produced its season online. While online theater had its challenges, there was one advantage: accessibility. One of the shows that season, I Loved, I Lost, I Made Spaghetti by Jacqués Lamarre, inspired Billy Joe and Nerissa to have spaghetti for dinner while streaming the play; they have been champions of the department ever since Alicia shared her students’ excitement for theater with them that summer.

I am very grateful for the support system I have found at ISU!” — Shelbie Winstead Shelbie is a senior double majoring in communication and language studies and is a recipient of the President’s Scholarship. On campus, she is involved with the Indiana Statesman and the Honors College as an Honors Peer Mentor. In addition to her campus involvement, Shelbie is involved with community philanthropy as a member of the ISU Lemon Club, who raises money for childhood cancer research. Her attention to detail and thoughtfulness has been instrumental to the success of the stewardship team in the Division of University Advancement.

Li Xiao ’99 gave $200,000 in support of the faculty in the Economics Department. Ms. Xiao wanted to celebrate the legacy of the economics faculty members that positvely impacted her career and her life.

THANK YOU! Give to Blue Day in 2023 brought together 1,710 Sycamores across the world who gave more than $1.38 million in 24 hours to support Indiana State University students and programs. The more than $1 million raised in 24 hours makes Give to Blue Day the single largest fundraiser in ISU history.

We are so pleased to give back to Sycamores and give them the opportunity to be successful in their future endeavors.” — Bob ’61, GR ’63 and Penny ’67, ’91, GR ’70 Schafer Former Vice President of Administrative Affairs Robert Schafer and his wife, Penny, have donated $1 million during the Be So BOLD campaign to amplify the experience of Sycamores inside and outside of the classroom. Bob and Penny have been supporters of Sycamore Athletics for decades with a dedicated involvement in the ISU Varsity Club and Sycamore Basketball. From their generous donation, a cash gift and four endowments will be created to support Indiana State University. Priorities will be placed on enhancing the experience for the Men’s and Women’s Basketball Teams, including updates to the Hulman Center Locker Room Area, as well as the Risk Management Program in the Scott College of Business and the School of Nursing in the College of Health and Human Services.

Republic Airways committed $100,000 to scholarships for diverse aviation students The gift will create two scholarships at ISU: $50,000 will fund the Willa B. Brown Scholarship and $50,000 will fund the Esteban Hotesse Scholarship. The scholarship in honor of Willa Beatrice Brown will support African American women in aviation and the Esteban Hotesse scholarship will be awarded to a Hispanic student in aviation. These two scholarships support Indiana State University’s and Republic Airways’ commitment to highlighting pioneers in aviation who have strong ties to the state of Indiana. Willa B. Brown was a 1931 ISU graduate. She was the first African American woman to earn a pilot’s license in the United States, the first African American woman to run for United States Congress, the first African American officer in the Civil Air Patrol, and the first woman in the country to have both a pilot’s license and an aircraft mechanic’s license. Esteban Hotesse was the only Dominican-born member of the Tuskegee Airmen and was a second lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force. He died in a training flight over southern Indiana in 1945. Corporate partners, such as Republic Airways, build a pipeline of employment for Indiana State students while currently investing in their education. Nia Spiller, pictured to the left, is a 2021 alumnus who strongly benefitted from such a strong partnership with Republic Airways and is now an avid supporter of Indiana State as a First Officer for Republic Airways. During 2023’s Homecoming, the ISU Flight Academy celebrated their 10-year anniversary and Nia participated in a fly-in to honor the importance of this space on campus.

THE POWER OF GIVING BACK Beyond academics, Sycamores are leaving a legacy that ISU can proudly claim—a culture of philanthropy, carefully cultivated by the Student Philanthropy Organization (SPO) and its visionary founder, Don Dudine. Don Dudine has always had a strong sense of giving back to his alma mater. Since graduating in 1967, he has been a longtime supporter of both Student Philanthropy and the School of Music. His generosity has been a vital part in the advancement of Indiana State University. In addition to his support, Dudine is the immediate past chair of the Foundation Board of Directors, where he was a leader in the promotion of joyful giving. It was this very sentiment that led him to establish the Student Philanthropy Organization in 2019. His mission was simple yet profound: to inspire a culture of philanthropy among the student body and to foster a sense of gratitude for the opportunities ISU provided. Since its establishment, they have successfully ignited a passion for giving back in the ISU community through various events and initiatives. Whether it be organizing a run to raise money for cancer research or handing out flowers for Valentine’s Day, SPO is always working to encourage Sycamores to give back to their university. They have made it their mission to educate their peers about the importance of philanthropy. SPO members aim to instill in their fellow students a sense of responsibility and a desire to give back, no matter how big or small the
contribution. As Don Dudine often says, “It’s not about the amount you give; it’s about the heart with which you give.” At Indiana State University, that heart beats strong, nurturing a culture of philanthropy that will endure for years to come. “My time at Indiana State has given me ample opportunities to grow as both a person and professional. I’ve had educational, professional, and personal experiences that I never would’ve expected, including volunteering in Puerto Rico, representing the university at the Statehouse, and having the ability to study abroad in London. I’m grateful for ISU alumni and supporters who have contributed to the positive impact the university has had on me.” — Drew Daming Drew is a junior majoring in operations and supply chain management and minoring in finance. He is both a Networks Scholar and a University Honors Scholar and gives back to his university through his involvement in the Student Philanthropy Organization. Around campus, he is a member of the Real Estate Club and Gamma Iota Sigma, an insurance fraternity. His work for the ISU Alumni Association in the 2022-2023 school year displayed a true sense of dedication and enthusiasm, and the Alumni Association is happy to have him back.
