CHEZ JOSEPHINE Talking with World-Class Restaurateur Manuel Uzhca

C

ontinuing a tradition begun by Jean-Claude Baker, Manuel Uzhca has dazzled Broadway with French delights as the owner of legendary restaurant and spiritual home of Josephine Baker — the irreplaceable Chez Josephine INdulge proudly presents and intimate chat with one of New York City’s premiere restaurateurs. Talk about the path that led your to becoming such an important figure in New York City’s thriving theater district. Since I was just a kid, I learned nothing comes easy in life. I’ve been working in the restaurant business since I [arrived from] Ecuador in 1985, more than thirty years ago. I knew [immediately] this would be my career. I started as a dish washer and [rose] from one position to another, learning every step it takes to keep a restaurant running. What inspired you to become a restaurant owner? I would say it’s more like dreaming and then making it happen. I began a worker, [graduated to owning a successful bistro] with two partners to owning Chez Josephine today.

The restaurant business is notoriously hard work and long hours, but it must bring you a sense of satisfaction? Absolutely! You work 7 days a week, but in the end your realize this is what makes you happy. It’s very enjoyable. What do you find to be the most valuable tools you use to maintain Chez Joesephines’s elite reputation? Anything of value takes hard work, patience and consistency. Does your menu vary from time to time? We’ve had our [signature] menu for several years, but what changes constantly are the special dishes we offer based on the season or a celebration, it’s a [priority] to keep our guests interested and happy. What are your future plans for Chez Josephine? To continue and provide our guests with [exemplary] food and service. We will [forever] honor our [roots]... being a placewhere the legend of Josephine Baker lives. Visit Chez Josephine at 414 W 42nd St, New York, NY 10036

Treasured Tradition Inspired Afternoon Tea in NYC is fit for all Seasons

T

he aroma and soothing comfort of tea in every season. Enjoy ordering a piping hot tea at afternoon tea services around the city. Here, five options with superb sweets, scones, and sips. Teas are just not for the cooler months - most enjoy them year-round.

BG Restaurant at Bergdorf Goodman The seventh floor is divine at Bergdorf Goodman. Mainly because it houses BG Restaurant, which in turn offers afternoon tea in a swoonworthy setting. Make sure to ask for a table with one of the plush cocoon “whisper chairs” when making a reservation—they’re an essential part of the experience. Savory dishes include the classics. 754 Fifth Ave., 212872-8977

The Gotham Lounge at The Peninsula New York Scones are the highlight of afternoon tea at The Peninsula. They’re among the best in the city, served warm from the oven with a buttery, golden crust and a delicate interior. Moist crumbs beg for a slather of the Devonshire cream and house-made lemon curd, which is simultaneously creamy and tart. A set of jams and preserves are also made in-house and change seasonally. 700 Fifth Ave., 212-956-2888

Two E Bar/Lounge at The Pierre At The Pierre, afternoon tea is served inside the luxe Two E Bar/Lounge just off the lobby. Tea here feels secluded and seductive, so a glass of Champagne to accompany would be most fitting. Tea sandwiches and sweets are sized perfectly for a single bite—look out for the caviarbuckwheat blini sandwich, and mini crêpes wrapped with dates and baba ganoush. 2 E. 61 St., 212-940-8113

Lobby Lounge at Mandarin Oriental New York The Mandarin just revamped their afternoon tea menu, and notable highlights include a fragrant rose tea customized for the hotel, a new quartet of tea sandwiches, and this magical dessert tier. Think chocolatechai macaroons, coconut-green tea tarts, and almond-blueberry financiers. And don’t forget about the killer views of Central Park from any table at the Lobby Lounge. 80 Columbus Cir., 212-805-8800

Star Lounge at The Ritz-Carlton New York, Central Park The number one tea to order at the Ritz-Carlton is the spicy chai. Unlike other teas on the menu, this comes prepared with a perfect balance of cream and just a kiss of sugar. There’s a lingering heat from the spices, perfect for a soothing afternoon. Pair a pot of chai with the signature RitzCarlton scones—they’re delightfully oversized with a crackly sugar crust. So decadent. 50 Central Park S., 212-308-9100

Lady K’s Bake Shop I

ndulge Magazine caught up with Kayla Barbuto, owner of Lady K’s Bake Shop at 4B West Front Street in Red Bank, New Jersey to ask her a few qustions. For starters, Kayla, can you tell us a little about how you got started?

I always had a passion for baking since I was a young girl. It wasn’t until I was 21 y/o when I decided to enroll in culinary school to turn my passion into a career. What is your specialty? I love baking small pastries and traditional baked goods, but using my artistic skills on custom cakes is where my heart is! I design cakes for all different occasions like weddings, birthdays, and showers, just to name a few. I find such gratitude in making someone’s dream cake become a reality. Every leader in every industry has a mentor. Who are some of yours? That’s a tough one; I have so many! Some of my favorite cake artists are Lori Hutchinson, Ron Ben-Israel, Maggie Austin, & Nadia Colella. They are all super talented and I really admire their originality. Starting out, were there moments when you felt like giving up? Absolutely! When I was a rookie, I didn’t realize how much the heat and humidity in the summer affects every aspect of cake-designing. There was this one hot summer day that caused all of these bold colors on this cake to basically “bleed” onto each other. With only a couple hours to spare, my only option was to remove the fondant icing and try again using a different technique. The second time was a charm! What are you influenced by and how would you describe your work? I’m very inspired by nature and French architecture. I love playing around with different textures and techniques. I would say my work is feminine and chic, each with its own unique style. Where do you see the cake trend going? There are so many new techniques and learning platforms than when I started baking 7 years ago. It has evolved so quickly, who knows what the new craze will be. One thing I know for sure- sugar flowers will never go out of style!

Joseph A. Halsey “Acting and music saved my life,” says Halsey. “I used to get into a lot of trouble was a kid. When I was told to shape up, I eventually found my passions of music and acting.” After years of being in the entertainment business, Halsey decided it was time to take a different direction by focusing on his home state of New Jersey. “I saw how the city of Trenton has changed and met the next generation of youths,” says Halsey. “I felt an overwhelming grief because everyone deserves a chance to build a good life and have basic necessities in life. Everyone should know where their next meal is coming from.” With a firm grounding in New Jersey, Halsey felt it was time to give back to a city and state that gave him the chance to better himself. And the best way he knew how to the message out there was to stand out by creating the docuseries Generation Change. Generation Change is the product of Halsey and his film company partner Lee Kolinsky. They created seven13 films with the intention of making a positive impact through the art of filmmaking. In order to accomplish this goal, Halsey took the time to meet with youth organizations, city leaders, educators, political officials and law enforcement in order to ensure this docuseries was going to capture life, not just in Trenton, but also other impoverished areas of New Jersey. This first episode of the docuseries, Generation Change, asks young people about how they would improve Trenton and better the lives of the people who live in it. It asks, “What would you do if you were mayor?” “The answers these young people have are intuitive, grounded in truth and heartening,” says Halsey. “They want what most people want. To live in an environment where you don’t have to worry about being shot, they want civic centers, new books for their schools and a listened to.”

I

ndependent film producer Joseph A. Halsey is advocating for the voice of a new generation. With his new docuseries Generation Change, Halsey gives youths the opportunity to speak out about their lives and how they would improve upon the city of Trenton, New Jersey.

Halsey was born and raised in Trenton. He then got into music and filmmaking, more specifically acting, where he appeared in acclaimed independent films like the Maltese Murder Mystery and Junkie Heaven. He made several appearances on Guiding Light, ‘Law and Order: SVU’ and ‘The Cosby Show. He is also the co-founder of the band Bigger Than Plastic.

Generation Change has been showing at local organizations all over New Jersey. Their most recent screening was at Rider University, where they hosted a Youth Symposium after the screening. “The youth symposium was a highlight of the evening,” says Halsey. “We had four Trenton mayoral candidates answer questions from youths of the area. The kids asked them several questions on how they would better the city of they were elected.” “There is no easy way to start a dialog for change within a community,” says Halsey. ”However, by creating Generation Change, the voices of these children won’t be lost in a meeting and can be seen and heard at any time by anyone.

ARTIST FEATURE GAREK Where do you draw inspiration from? People. That’s why most of my visual work is figurative; I’m not excited or challenged by the abstract. There are so many abstractions in humanity as it is- that’s what I’m interested in exploring. I don’t need to create any superfluous colors or shapes. They’re already there- waiting for me to drain the color from them. If I’m writing a song I’ll usually center it around an idea or a word. That’s where I allow myself to think more abstractly, through words. I’m interested in telling a story, and they usually lean toward the autobiographical. They say write what you know, but I’m still trying to figure myself out. What’s next for you musically? Artistically? Musically, I have three new videos that I’m going to release in the upcoming months. GAREK is a Chicago-based Artist. Musically, he’s known for his darker Industrial stylings (a la Nine Inch Nails and Marilyn Manson) as well as his energetic stage presence. “Garek always looks as though he’s moments away from breaking a bone onstage.” -Stay Thirsty Magazine MTV’s NewNowNext says “for all his influences, there’s something distinctive about what he’s doing.” In addition to music, Garek has

I’m also working on a second album, which is shaping up to be much heavier than the first. They won’t know whether to head bang or to dance. Artistically, I’m looking to put some independent shows together with myself and some of the other artists I respect. I don’t care much for a lot of the art that’s out there right now, but sometimes there’s a pleasant surprise. I’m also thinking of doing some live art- expose people to the actual process of creation as opposed to just viewing. Where do you see yourself in the future? Toothless and senile. And if that doesn’t pan out I like to imagine myself looking back at all of the work I created during my life. Art, songs, videos, poems- that’s what will flash before my eyes before I die. carved out a niche for himself in the art world by his bold and unconventional use of charcoal. His work largely focuses on the figurative. “He has such a confident hand as an artist. You get the sense that every line and shade is exactly where he wants it to be. There’s also a violence that comes through his work; the range of emotion he’s able to capture in his pieces is something rarely seen in a young artist.” -Victor Armendariz (Gallery Victor) “Tender Age”

BOGEART

T

he clock is ticking and the rush is on as gallerists, artists, luxury brands and venues race to secure their takeover of Miami and Miami Beach for the world’s largest contemporary art fair - Art Basel. The pressure of securing sponsors and booking entertainment, catering, and lighting is to be able to present their art in a way to motivate collectors from around the world and the public to buy that perfect piece they can’t live without. There are a myriad of openings and brand launches every night that keep the city a blaze throughout the night as celebrities support their favorite artists and party into the morning light. Miami Art Week has become the super bowl of the art world and it is very easy to get lost in the shuffle so, we have profiled New York Artist Eddy Bogeart and George Borges Gallery as the ones to watch this year. We asked them both what it takes for them to prepare for Miami Art Week and why is it important for them to be a part of it? The Wall Street Journal took note of Eddy Bogearts work last year and was quoted in saying “Eddy Bogaert gave one-on-one tours in which he held forth at length on his vision and technique. Here, one might say, is the less commercial, more “authentic” artistic experience.” The excitement of being part of the Art Basel continues as previously took part December 7th-10th Art Basel Miami Beach Eddy Bogeart’s scope of work is described as a multi-dimensional, counter balance that taps into your desires and represents the release of primal emotions and thought. His complex style and pieces go beyond just what you see. To suggest his work is simply described as “mixed media”, is only the tip of the iceberg. His pieces exist on several planes at the same time and is like a portal into different dimensions that require guests to use 3-D glasses, black light and normal lighting too experience in its entirety. The life his art inspires recently caught the eye of Wilhemina Models NY and used his art as the theme of recent campaign for New York Fashion Week. His exhibit opening is taunted to be one of the hottest in the art world during Miami Art Week and is a requirement to attend for art enthusiasts looking for the ultimate model party mixed with a little rock n roll, glitterati and celebrities. He explained that as an up and coming artists, it is a major part of his yearly schedule to be a significant part of the Art Basel experience. It is the one time of year where all the collectors, artists, celebrities and media from around the world gather together for one week. It’s the only place in the world where a discerning collector could very easily buy all the available pieces of a show simply because, he can recognize the worth and value in an artist and the longevity of his work. Art Basel locations for 2018, March 29th-31st 2018 Art Basel, Hong Kong, June 14th-17th 2018 Art Basel, Switzerland, December 6th-9th 2018, Art Basel, Miami Beach.

Steve Glorius

Glorius Works Of Art - An American Iron Sculptor By Linda Maniscalco

S

teve Glorius has been creating iron sculptures for 25 years. While working at an iron works and steel supply company in his native Maryland, Glorius began creating small animal figures. Soon after, colleagues and friends wanted one of their own, and the artist’s career was born. Glorius re-purposes scrap metal to create what he loves the most – wildlife, the natural world and fantasy art sculptures. His iron medium creations, which can take up to several weeks to make include turtles, dolphins, sharks, sea horses, mermaids, dragons and more. “Since I was a little boy, I have been interested in creating art,” says Glorius. The artist carefully hand cuts each piece using one of the oldest cutting and welding processes - an oxygen-acetylene torch, then he grinds off the slag and welds the pieces together using a welding machine. This process of using fuel gases and oxygen to cut metals was first developed in 1903. His 600-pound “Great White Shark” was displayed at The Calvert Marine Museum in Solomons Island, Maryland, a non-profit, educational, maritime museum dedicated to the collection, preservation, research, and interpretation of the culture and natural history of Southern Maryland and its waters. Glorius’ love of the sea and marine life has more recently brought him to The Hamptons and East End of Long Island, New York, where he has been spending his summers for the past three years. Having an appreciation for the natural environment and to help raise awareness of our fragile wildlife, Glorius donated “Momma & Baby” humpback whales to the 2017 South Folk Natural History Museum Summer Gala which honored photographer Peter Beard. Susan Rockefeller, who took the sculpture home after bidding the highest bid, said she loves Glorius’ work and is now “the happy owner of this beautiful sculpture!” Other charities the sculptor has donated his works to include Ellen’s Run Pink Apron Party to benefit The Ellen Hermanson Breast Cancer Center hosted by Christie Brinkley at Southampton Hospital, in which Glorius crafted “Pink Seahorse” for their auction; and, Hospice of Charles County in Maryland, Glorius generously donated his “Deer” sculpture.

Another of his custom pieces was presented to chef and restaurateur B. Smith and husband Dan Gasby, of their beloved Mastiff Bishop, at Sag Harbor’s Monika Olko Gallery on Long Island. Glorius began his love of art during childhood when he began drawing. He created his first sculpture in his 20s, a 10 inch tiger which started out as a drawing - he was working at J&J Iron Works and Builders Steel Supply Co. in Clinton, Maryland, on and off for 12 years, cutting beams for houses and buildings. Praying for a Miracle”, Long Beach, Noyac, NY It didn’t take long before he realized his drawings could be transformed into the sculptures he creates today with a few pieces of scrap metal. His employer John Bellosi gave the aspiring sculptor the opportunity to hone his craft and allowed him to create his masterpieces during lunch breaks and after hours. The welderturned-artist has been creating sculptures ever since, where they have been displayed in museums, restaurants, galleries and gift shops.

“I just bought a sculpture of Steve’s and love his re-use of materials and bringing attention to our precious resources. Steve also highlights the beauty as well as the plight of marine species threatened by over fishing and plastic pollution. His work is important, visually strong and beautiful”. -Susan Rockefeller

Custom-made, commissioned sculptures are Glorius’ specialties. He created “Praying for a Miracle”, a rendition of a single Peacock perched on a sapling, and dedicated the sculpture to his friend, Jennifer Peacock, after she sustained a severe head injury. The miracle happened shortly after the piece was completed.

Glorius devotes most of his time to his sculptures which he says is easy when he thinks about people enjoying his art. “I like making people happy with what they see,” he said. “I could probably never stop doing this.”

Mariel Hemingway is among celebrities that own Glorius’ works. She said, “Steve’s work is amazingly heartfelt and blissful. I love his connection to nature and how he expresses it in his work.”

The Batman Inspired Limited Edition Dress Shirt “The Cassata” Scinto

O

n April 7th 2018, Rosario S. Cassata of West Hills, N.Y. was honored with the very first production of his Exclusive Limited Edition Sport Shirt bearing the family name “The Cassata” by Andrew Berg, President of Robert Graham along with wife Carolyn, his family and friends at the Time Warner Building in New York City. As a Batman Collector, Rosario choose to design his shirt with the classic colors of his 1966 childhood Hero Batman “The Cape Crusader” aka Adam West in mind. The shirt is a cotton fabric abstract motif of the colors blue, black and yellow featuring molten metal like embellishments, clear plastic overlays detailing at placket and sleeves with ornate embroidery highlights on both the chest and the back.

Rosario has been a Collector of the globally recognized clothing designs of Robert Graham since 2010 and as well as a member of the Robert Graham Collectors Club. Recently, Rosario has earned the esteemed collector status level of Curator and has amassed a collection of over 200 plus Designer and Limited Edition shirts. “The Cassata” Limited Edition Sport Shirts will all be each individually numbered and sold exclusively by Robert Graham Stores with only 539 pieces worldwide. Rosario S. Cassata currently serves as President of Cassata Realty Group and as the Trustee of the nonprofit charitable organization The Cassata Foundation of Long Island.
