Alcohol Boosts Skin Effects

W

ho doesn’t like to indulge in bottomless mimosas at Sunday brunch, or have a nice glass (or two or three) of Pinot Noir with dinner?

Here’s what happens to your skin when you drink. Alcohol is a diuretic, which means it rids your body of water. (This is also why, when you drink, you’re in the bathroom multiple times in an hour.) This is bad news for skin. Dehydration leads to dry, dull skin that has enlarged pores and seemingly deeper lines and wrinkles. Alcohol decreases your body’s Vitamin A levels. Vitamin A is a vital antioxidant that helps fight freeradical damage as well as bolster skin cell turnover to give your skin a bright glow. It can lead to redness. You know why some people get flushed when they drink? It’s because alcohol dilates your skin’s blood vessels, leading to redness, puffiness, and sometimes even facial spider veins. A lot of drinks are made with loads of salt and sugar. Excess salt leads to puffiness and under eye bags, and excess sugar contributes to a process called glycation, which forms advanced glycation end products (AGEs). These weaken collagen and elastin (the proteins responsible for keeping skin tight and firm) leading to wrinkles, dullness and sagging skin. Plus, they reduce your skin’s ability to fight freeradical damage. And if that isn’t bad enough, sugar triggers a hormone signals the skin to over-produce oil, disrupting the natural moisture balance. This doesn’t mean that you should live an ascetic life of no alcohol at all, but it does mean you should limit your alcohol and choose wine over sugary mixed drinks, so say cheers to good skin!

Sun-Less Glow Indulge with Bronzers

T

he most important thing you can do to prevent premature skin aging is staying out of the sun. But does that mean you have to miss out on the insanely flattering effects that a tan can have? Not at all! It can make you look younger, thinner and generally happier. So if you’re staying out of the sun, replicate the glow by using powder and liquid products for both face and body. Here’s a list some of my favorite bronzers I’ve used over the years. Some are lotions, other are powders, and some just for face or body and some for both. Bobbi Brown Face & Bronzing Duo – This powder is fabulous for both face and body. I like it for the décolletage during warm summer nights! Estee Lauder Bronze Goddess Luminous Liquid Bronzer – This lotion looks amazing on limbs. Rub on arms and legs for a slenderizing, shimmery effect. Benefit Sun Beam – Dot this on the top of your cheekbones and along your brows to define and shine! Benefit Hoola Bronzer – My favorite matte bronzer ever, this powder makes you look like you’ve been in San Tropez for three weeks. Nars Bronzing Powder – With just the perfect amount of shimmer, this bronzer doubles as a gorgeous skinloving blush. Michael Kors Leg Shine – This comes in a solid stick, like a deodorant. Glide up and down legs for a light tint that makes legs shine. Lorac TANtalizer Body Bronzing Luminizer – I love this for covering imperfections like cellulite and spider veins! It also moisturizes, so you get a moisturizer that bronzes. What’s there not to love?

Massage + Beauty

roponents of massage say that it has a host of benefits from anti-aging skin benefits, in addition to relaxation and stress reduction– which we all know affects all aspects of our health. Massage has been used for thousands of years, and by many different cultures, for good reason. But what about skin? How does massage benefit skin? We have muscles and connective tissue underneath our skin that are affected by stress and toxins. Relaxing and massaging the face softens lines around your eyes, lips and brows. It also rids the skin of toxins that cause acne and rosacea, and de-puffs and brightens the eye area. By increasing circulation, oxygenating the blood and encouraging the presence of fresh, healing red blood cell, a good facial massage not only benefits the skin of the face by increasing its elasticity, but also by allowing it to “breath properly. As a result, the face becomes more radiant, smoother and firmer. And more receptive to serums and creams. Not to mention: It feels good, allowing the massage recipient to relax and release any tension she might be suffering from. We all know stress is bad for skin, causing acne, wrinkles and loss of firmness. Start massaging at home with these tips: 1. Start on the cheeks. Draw big circles using your fingers or knuckles, moving upward. 2. On one side of the face at a time, rub from the midjaw to the cheekbone with long upward strokes, pressing firmly for a moment at the top. 3. Work smile lines with upward strokes, from the corners of the mouth to the corners of the nose. 4. With your fingers, lift and hold both brows to open up the eye area. Rub in a circle around the eye socket out to the temples, eventually expanding to include the forehead. 5. To plump lips, use thumbs and index fingers to quickly pluck all across the top and bottom lip, which stimulates blood flow.

Sun Kissed

W

hen we were younger, the only thing we did to take care of our skin in the sun was to apply baby oil and make sure we tan the fronts and backs of our bodies evenly. What we know now about damaging UVA and UVB rays make us cringe to think about our younger selves’ skin care habits! So what do you do if you’ve been out in the sun all summer or out in the sun your whole life, and you’ve been lax about sun protection? There are a few things to help reverse sun damage and protect against future damage. Eat antioxidant-rich foods – Did you know that certain foods can help the skin rejuvenate and repair itself? Foods like cherries, crimini mushrooms and green tea contain large amounts of antioxidants like melatonin, Vitamin C and selenium to repair sunburned skin, fight damaging compounds and inflammation and stimulate new collagen. Try a DNA-repairing sunscreen – There’s a host of skin care products that purportedly repair broken DNA including brands Neova and DNA EGF Renewal. Some studies have shown that DNA-repairing enzymes in lotions and creams can revitalize skin, reverse sun damage and reduce the risk of skin cancer. Get regular peels at a dermatologist office or spa, or do at-home peels. These acid peels slough off the top layer of skin to reduce brown spots, hyperpigmentation and roughness due to sun exposure. The most common are the alpha hydroxy acids, like glycolic or lactic acid that reach beneath the surface to rejuvenate skin. Always, always apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen, not only to your face, but to any other exposed skin before you leave the house. The neck, décolletage, arms and hands all require coverage. This will prevent future damage. And remember, no more baby oil!

Best Kept Secret S By Jonathan D. Pigno

taten Island’s The Secret Garden Eco-Salon and Spa offers customers a glimpse of their true inner beauty by emphasizing outside transformation through the doorways of style and confidence.

Innovation – it is the consequence of change and a step towards reinvention. When Vivian Pisano opened the doors to Staten Island’s very first eco-friendly salon and beauty headquarters, introducing something new wasn’t her only mission. She wanted to be bold, fresh – envisioning a standout center for fashion founded on environmentally-conscious sentiments while retaining classic sensibilities. Thus, The Secret Garden was born, providing its clientele with unique and natural alternatives to fine cosmetic care and style consultation conveniently housed under one roof. As with any successful enterprise, it is an ensemble effort – priding itself upon community awareness and the exchange of big ideas between artists, stylists, and specialists alike. The Secret Garden boasts a diverse array of cosmetologists and experts practicing within a charming, yet lavish atmosphere. Providing a vast expanse of luxuries from skincare, nail care, lash art, and nearly everything in-between, Pisano’s celebrated boutique welcomes visitors to explore the metamorphic power of elegance by nourishing what really matters – their souls. Perhaps no one understands this quite like Yasmin Gaffar-Cusick, a seasoned and talented colorist who has now been a part of Pisano’s team for over five years. A graduate of numerous European cosmetology schools and once the boss of her own salon, Yasmin sought to wholly embrace her lauded reputation as a veteran and premiere beautician by pursuing what really mattered – her devotion to the craft. Leaving her own business behind, she happily joined The Secret Garden as both a master colorist and beauty consultant after learning of the team’s initiative for environmentally-sound pampering. It was a decision near to her heart, as she always remained passionate about embracing an organic lifestyle. With the rare opportunity to merge beliefs with her profession, the choice became undoubtedly clear. Yasmin’s loyal clients excitedly followed her to her new home, as she continues to treat them with the same dedication and painstaking diligence that she always presents on their first meeting. Her secret is the individualized attention learning each customer’s preferences and devising an exclusive look that takes into consideration all of her colleagues’ expertise and the person’s own distinct characteristics. You don’t have to take her word for it, as Yasmin’s long list of dedicated patrons will vouch for her commitment to moving forward and reassessing their image. There is no set look for this stylist, as she strives to reinvent each individual regardless of how long they have been seeking her exceptional skills. With a level of unparalleled enthusiasm and unwavering sincerity, Yasmin believes she has found her place at The Secret Garden for a one very particular reason - the ability to express her gifts in an encouraging setting. The entire staff knows that pleasant surroundings leads to happy work, and it is this responsibility that translates into a statement of profound potential amidst such a group of dynamic artists. It is their freedom that permits them to experiment, to collaborate and engage in various cosmetic feats while maintaining their personal voice and simply loving what they do. If this imperative is any indication of their outstanding service, rest assured, the caliber is most certainly extraordinary. thesecretgardenspa.com

Indulge in Your Health

W

By Gino Caccavale

hen we think about indulging or pampering ourselves, we usually tend to ponder spa treatments, a shopping spree, or a bottle of wine by the fire. How about a grueling hour long training session with an elite trainer or a 30 minute gut busting boot camp class? Doesn’t sound as fun as the wine or spa, but more and more people are treating themselves to high end quality training or elite classes and memberships. Long gone are the days where you walk in to the gym and wonder what to do. We pay for experts to handle our accounting, dry cleaning, home and car repairs, etc. So why not hire an experienced expert to handle our most prized possession: our health! In the grand scheme of things, we tend to spend north of $500 a month on our hair, skin, nails, clothes, dining out, entertainment, and $5 lattes. Call it vanity or motivation, but now having an experienced trainer is just as much a must have as that Michael Kors bag or a puppy. The water cooler talk has shifted from what you did last night, to what you did in your last workout session, smugly followed by how your trainer is the best ! As well as changing the conversation the heath craze has also transformed the meeting, date or client outing. Let’s say your staff is due for a teambuilding event. The most common of course is that night out with dinner and shots, raising glasses to a job well done. Nowadays the dinner might come, but not until after taking a strenuous class or doing an adventure race together. CEO’S and business owners are spending up to $400 for group classes for their employees. Having been a trainer for over 30 years it is more of a habit than an indulgence for me. Think long term and hopefully a little splurge on your

fitness will lead to a lifetime of healthy habits. When thinking and planning your next hedonistic event or purchase , think about how much it costs and how long it will last. You’ll find that a healthy heart and strong body lasts a bit longer than your next haircut. Invest in yourself. ginocaccavale.com

DonnaMarie Recco Analyze Everything By DM Recco

“The audition was the following day so I was sent home early to study my lines, all twelve of them. The film was “ANALYZE THIS” and the character description was simply “Sheila - Paul Vitti’s girlfriend; Brooklyn native; knock out”. That threw me off. Was my agent, Crazy Gay Paul, also blind? I’m a pale freckled waif sporting A cups for a rack. But I mute all self-doubt, muffling it with the reality that this role, this seemingly insignificant role, could break me in. And let’s face it, when you’re a nobody who knows nobody and you’re trying to break into Hollywood with only four years of training and a pretty face, Crazy Gay Paul isn’t the crazy one.” -DM Recco

IN FEATURE

The Call I got the call from Crazy Gay Paul, my agent with a heart of gold, while working my usual bartending shift at Minetta Tavern -- think “Cheers”, only in Greenwich Village, NYC. Minetta’s had a way of weeding out the MacDougal Street riff-raff without the use of a doorman. It seemed to attract the more sophisticated alcoholics. Maybe it was the dark wood and late thirties decor the landmark building had to offer. Maybe it was the prices. In any case, on this particular Tuesday evening in the late November dusk it was full of the usual suspects, friends I chose to call family, and that’s exactly who you want present when getting news like this. Taka, my beloved yet very platonic Albanian boss, and his cousin Demo, our most cherished waiter with immaculate dark side-parted hair, were working. Patronizing our tavern were Cami, the beautiful red headed L’Oreal hair-color model, Charles, our distinguished English professor, and Mitch the local drug dealer, a narcoleptic who could be dead asleep with his eyes wide open -- I would never know if Mitch was sleeping or making an attempt to drudge up some knowledge stowed away in his cerebral cortex -- this was my fan base. “Yo, D to the M! Have I got some shit-kicking news for you!” Crazy Gay Paul’s husky voice chirped loudly, as it always did, through my cell phone holstered to my ear by my shoulder, making it seem as if I had him on speaker. Frank Sinatra’s “Greatest Hits” was fading to an end on the CD player behind a corner of the bar known as “The Trap” because of the floors trap door that all speakeasy restaurants have hidden. “I got you an audition to play Robert DeNiro’s girlfriend in a Harold Ramis film, you crazy bitch!” All eyes and ears were on me wondering if it’s the hour I switch the music from oldies to contemporaries, and also what Crazy Gay Paul had to say. “Really?” I say with a southern drawl for no reason. My attempt to take in this news smoothly while cradling a cell phone to my ear and load a Harry Connick Jr CD, hoping it would divert the unwanted attention I was getting, was not successful. In my haste I fumble and not only drop the disk held by my sweaty hands, but a pile of CDs that were resting peacefully upon a speaker spill onto the musty trap door beneath my feet. As I collected the CDs one by one without caution I recalled the time I fell down that trap door. The dark memory made me feel small and incapable of sharing a big screen with such Hollywood royalty. Taka had always warned me to check and see if The Trap had been shut after deliveries, but I’ve managed to forget this pearl of wisdom one night in a rush to stop an undesirable song from playing and The Trap swallowed me whole. A bartender’s’ puppet show disappearing act. Surely I would botch this audition somehow. But I was at my tavern, my very own Broadway, and so it goes... Everyone was rooting for me that night the call came in. The audition was the following day so I was sent home early to study my lines. All twelve of them. The film was “ANALYZE THIS” and the character description was simply “Sheila - Paul Vitti’s girlfriend; Brooklyn native; knock out”. That threw me off. Was Crazy Gay Paul also blind? I’m a pale freckled waif sporting A cups for a rack. But I mute all self-doubt, muffling it with the reality that this role, this seemingly insignificant role, could break me in. And let’s face it, when you’re a nobody who knows nobody and you’re trying to break into Hollywood with only four years of Method theatrical training and a pretty face, Crazy Gay Paul isn’t the crazy one. The next day I stuffed my push-up bra with my boyfriend’s tube socks, covered my freckles with Maybelline make-up and gave those twelve lines my very best. Then I waited.

Having to wait for a “call-back” (or second interview, for those smart enough to avoid a theatrical career) is the hardest part. Well, that’s not entirely true. The most difficult part this time was reading lines written for a sex scene while sitting erect on an ice-cold metal folding chair under buzzing fluorescent lights into a camera with a woman who’s had a really bad day. Hell, sword-swallowing seems effortless in comparison, but luckily the callback didn’t come about for weeks, by which time I assumed it had gone to a producer’s wife or girlfriend, or perhaps a porn star who didn’t have tube socks for boobs ...or both. But it hadn’t. Spring Forward, Call-Back “Yo, D to the M! You did it! You got a call-back! Now go close this thing like Alec Bauldwin in Glen Garry Glenross, you sexy kitty bitch! Meow!” As I careened my way around the dark hallway at the Warner Brothers casting office in mid-town, instead of the female frenzy I had expected, I saw only one other actress. I was confused as to how they could have narrowed it down to just us two, not unlike trying to grasp dark matter or how something can be infinitely dense -- it causes my brain to short circuit so I just give up entirely -- but there is no denying it was just me and her, a beautiful sultry redhead who could have made Marilyn Monroe look like a “stand-in” (and by stand-in I mean “less than”, for those of you smart enough to forego enduring a career that promotes rejection on a daily basis). Was it the thick warm air that winter bestows upon the indoors, all that dry heat humming threw dusty vents, or the darkness of an early November evening that made me feel fuzzy and light-headed? That kind of atmosphere can make any stark NYC office seem like it’s closed for repair. Was I in the right place? I watched her gathering up her things like a voluptuous ballerina in slow motion. I almost turn back thinking I was lost, but as she brushed by me towards her exit she threw away a line I will never forget as long as I live, and maybe even longer. “Be prepared to improvise.” Her dark red lips spoke without moving. It didn’t seem intentional or out of defeat, she seemed to be speaking to herself as she headed towards her future, the elevator behind me. Whatever prompted this dialogue I am truly grateful because in that moment I knew that I would do whatever it took to land the role of Sheila, Paul Vitti’s girlfriend, Brooklyn native, knock-out. I felt a surge of determination that instead of blinding me with tunnel vision it broadened my horizon to an almost Zen-like state. I could have done no wrong in that room once called in. I cannot tell you where this confidence came from. This was my first film audition. Being an actress is so often synonymous with being out-going and confident, but wanting to be an actress was never my position. Wanting to act was. I was a painfully shy little girl and somewhere between my preteen years and a minor case of alcoholism I realized I would rather say the lines of someone else. I’d rather say anything than speak my own thoughts, ideas, fears, or whatever else we keep to ourselves, lest someone step on them while all exposed like some yard sale spread of personables. Hiding behind a tree won’t get you far in life, but hiding behind a character, now that’s practical! If I ever wanted to hide, it should have been in that moment. But I wanted to soar. I could have delivered those twelve lines angrily, or sad, or hysterical, or whatever was called for in the moment, because of this tip from the gods… or some buxom redhead Marilyn spin-off, or both. Maybe God is a voluptuous actress with crimson hair who talks to her self? Who ever you are, thank you! It was impossible to realize the magnitude of such a gift in that moment because there simply was no time since I was immediately met by an intern who said my name like a question then quickly ushered me in. His nerves were high and I just assumed he was ecstatic to be where he was.

IN FEATURE

After all, this was a Warner Brothers office holding final call-backs, which can only mean it was a powerful room that held a panel of very important people. I don’t recall ever being told any of this. It was all so new to me and I was filling in the blanks with drama, fear and conjecture. I imagined on the other side of that door was a small stage with a mark to stand at so I can face a bevy of spotlights that blinded me from seeing where all the muffled chatter was coming from. Then I would settle onto my mark, the shuffling and buzzing about the darkness would settle into a loud silence

74 indulgememagazine.com

and I would be asked to state my name and begin “acting”. This was my fear. What happened was much worse. Having just three professional people and no camera in the room would normally be a relief, but because two of those people were writer/director and comic genius, Harold Ramis, and two time Oscar winner, Robert DeNiro, I nearly left my body. The smell of cigars lingered in the air, giving a relaxed clubhouse feel to the dim room. I was trusted to be in

the midst of greatness like a seasoned veteran, because a seasoned veteran would be able to keep their shit together. Which is, by some miracle, what I did. I recall feeling both big and small in my entrance. A strange thick/thin feeling that can only be felt when something really profound is either about to happen or is happening in that moment. These legendary artists stood to greet me and all I could do was attempt to exude an essence that was honest. I thought I had said, “Mr. Ramis, Mr. DeNiro, should you choose me for this roll I will not let you down”, but what came out was, “It’s a pleasure to be nervous. I’m very here.” or something dyslexic like that. Call Me Bobby I can’t really recall much of our greetings and salutations because I was too busy being Zen, remember? I do know it was Harold Ramis who cued the third person present, the “reader” (one assigned to play opposite the actor during an audition) to say the first line. I responded by saying my first line. Then Bobby laughed out loud. Yes, that’s right, “Bobby”. Three times in succession Robert DeNiro said, “Bobby. Call me Bobby. Bobby’s good”. We had started the scene over many times, but not because of anything other than we were having fun. Although there was a reader for this audition it didn’t take long before Bobby would take over the dialogue by going “off-book” (also known as “improvising” for those of you who are not masochistic in profession. Okay, I promise I’ll stop that now!) Had the red-haired Goddess not tipped me off about improvising I would have botched the audition. I’m an inexperienced method actor. That’s like being at a Hip-Hop dance-off and only knowing how to Waltz! Luckily Bobby and I were volleying this invisible ball of banter like two seasoned tennis players of Olympic proportions. I sensed the audition was going well, but it also could have also been that this was how Hollywood veterans did it. Easy breezy, like they understood casting small supporting roles was meant to be fun. These two gentlemen had camaraderie. They seemed to enjoy some private joke that I could have easily let my ego run away with, as if I’m a breath of fresh air in their dank casting office. Then I reminded myself that these two gentlemen are successful and powerful forces, they are considered Hollywood’s elite, and that if they were stuck in an elevator or on line at a bank they somehow would do it better than the rest of us. I’m so sure that on this night their relaxed and good-natured spirits kept me from losing my mojo all together. Just before it was time to wrap up our improvisation, I had an opportunity to get close to Bobby and deliver a line that would have drawn “Shelia” (me) toward him. “Why don’t you just lie back and relax.” It’s a line so seductive that saying it nose to nose seemed honest. So, that’s what I did. I got up from my chair and closed the gap between us, leading with my chin as if swimming under water until we were nose to nose. Never had I imagined I would break such a boundary or get in someone’s personal space during an audition, nor had I since, but this was my moment to shine. This was my “button” (a line or action with which will have you remembered, for all who aren’t insane enough to want to act. Okay, so I lied about stopping that!) I wasn’t thinking that Robert DeNiro, the same man whose mantra, “you talkin’ to me?” sparked almost every male acting career of this contemporary era, or the good fella who’d kill you just because his friend thought you should be dead, or the missionary man who duels with a knife. All I could manage to think with the small portion of brainpower I had left over from improvising was, “Gee, I’m awful close. I hope my breath is fresh and my eyes aren’t too bloodshot”. My eyes looked like a roadmap due to too my lack of sleep the night before, but it didn’t matter. Bobby was rooting for me. I know this for certain because when it was all over he asked where I was from and when I replied “Canarsie, Brooklyn” he slapped his knee and shouted, “Yes!” as if his thorough-bred had just won the Triple Crown. Call Time Our love scene was shot on location in the presidential suit of the Waldorf Astoria in NYC. I arrived at 9am and by the time I am transformed into “Sheila” it was time to break for lunch. Who could eat? Once I was finally in bedridden position, along with lights, sound, camera and crew, Bobby briskly walked in the room, stopped at the foot of our bed, and with his famous shit-eating grin and out stretched hands he hollered, “You, Brooklyn… C’over here!” I was perfectly placed under 1200 count Egyptian sheets by a set designer but I jumped up and ran over to him for my big bear hug anyway. Call Me Brooklyn Thankfully my nickname stuck for the duration of the shoot, and I can only hope, the rest of my life. It was a sex scene, but Harold Ramis is a family man so he chose to call it a “Love Scene”, abstaining from anything that could be misconstrued as porn. There wasn’t anything sexy about it. I had a dozen pins keeping my nighty in place, and a half a pound of body makeup on every square inch of my being. I was so afraid it would rub off on the sheets or my pins would prick Bobby or myself and we would have to start over on my account. We laughed a lot, and not just because Billy Crystal would visit the set from time to time and drop one-liners that gave Bobby and me belly laughs, or because Bobby’s pink silk boxers matched my slip, but because we were portraying the ultimate act of intimacy while fully clothed and barely touching. Most people wouldn’t believe what film can do to dimension. There were roughly 5 or 6 inches of air between us at all times. One would swear we where grinding like two high school horn dogs in the back of a Chevy, but no. Everything about this man, this crew, and this very location, was all a class act. We changed camera angels a few times so we had said the same lines for hours with small breaks in between. I had time to think. And I did. Surely this opportunity means something… but what? I lived my life analyzing everything as if there were a lesson behind it. I imagined every isolated moment offered a choice that if chosen correctly we could be promoted on a spiritual scale by some intangible force that governs everything, and I wanted the rank of royalty. This theory, if taken too seriously, is down right exhausting and borderline ridiculous. But on this day I sought the wisdom of a man that I respect and admire tremendously, a man who called me “Brooklyn”. My Calling While the cameras got re-arranged for the last time Bobby and I stood next to each other with our backs against the wall watching the crew in action. “Bobby, look at me!” I really didn’t need him to face me but he did, slightly, as my Italian hands became alive, highlighting everything around me, gesturing that I have fallen from the sky and landed in the best possible spot. “I’m hanging by a thread just trying to hold my own here and, well...” It was at that moment he shuffled his feet giving me more of an angle on his body

language and attention. “…I’m so afraid there is something I am not doing, or doing but need to do more of…you know?” The twinkle in his eyes came back. I can’t believe I hadn’t noticed it was gone. I continued my rant because I felt that if I didn’t ask something of him right then my moment, and therefore spiritual promotion, would be lost. I took in my biggest breath and begged, “…what could you tell me that you had wished you knew when you first started working? I’m just a girl from Canarsie! What am I doing?” He knew exactly what I was asking, and he knew it was a cosmic joke because there is no answer that will fix my curiosity. He huffed a bit, the way a wise man swallows laughter in order not to discourage a young apprentice, then said through his beautiful tight lipped smile, “You’re doing it. You’re here, right?! You’re doing it.” His sincerity caught my free-fall like a bed of roses, and I could finally exhale. We both started laughing. Perhaps the sheer luck of it all struck our funny bones. We got to do what we love more than anything else that day. Some of the crew around us were aware of our exchange and gave us some personal space but they had been ready and waiting for us for some time. If the sharp smell of high powered electrical lights burning didn’t snap me out of my epiphany -- that all is gained in the journey and not the destination -- Harold Ramis’ slight impatience would have. But it was both. Harold Ramis walked over and spoke softly in Bobby’s direction, “This is the ‘martini shot’, Bobby boy.” The “martini shot” is the final shot of the day, for all those who have no desire to memorize an entire screenplay! “I can’t help it, Brooklyn over here is making me laugh.” Bobby says this like a good fella tough guy while putting one arm around me and knuckling my gut with his free hand, making me gush. I managed to give my best imitation of Joe Pesci in “Good Fellas”, “Wha? I make you laugh? You mean, like a clown – I’m here to amuse you?” I heard a roar of laughter come from the room that I imagine a stand-up comic gets on a good night and with that I know what it is to be “Brooklyn”, the clown that amuses. Call It Whatever You Like It was the perfect aftermath to the heavy burden of lesson finding I had put upon myself. Why analyze everything? Maybe I was there to amuse? Maybe I was there so that I can have a story that will somehow revive me when I’m in a coma of depression, crippled by a haunting sub-conscious telling me I’m not good enough. Or maybe I’m just plain lucky? Who knows, really? All I can say is that when your neighbor’s grass is greener, it could be as simple as he waters his lawn. Or Not! Maybe it’s random and some dog happened to piss all over yours!!! My point being that life doesn’t always seem fair or make complete sense so why waste time cracking some code? Maybe one day you’re the clown and the next you’re the Oscar winner or the stand-in. Just enjoy it, because as sure as I am about anything, and that’s not much, it will change. Again. And again.

Sirey Moran

A Trailblazing Beauty Steps Forth By Alejandra Ruiz-Dana

H

onduras has never won the Miss Universe title. But that could change very soon thanks to Sirey Moran. With her remarkable beauty and grace, the current Miss Honduras is poised to take the pageant by storm.

Growing up, Sirey never aspired to be a beauty queen. In fact, she did not think of herself as attractive. “I was too tall for my age and the boys did not pay me any attention,” she recounts. Her mom might have also played a part in this. She made sure Sirey’s school skirts fell below the knee. “My mother is a professional woman, a judge. She is also a single mother. Growing up, she instilled the importance of education in my five siblings and me. So, naturally, she wanted me to focus on school, not boys,” she explains. Under her mother’s tutelage, Sirey excelled in school. In her view, earning a scholarship to purse her first studies abroad was a pivotal achievement. Not only did it allow her to perfect her English-speaking skills, but it also brought her to New York City. Experiencing life in the Big Apple was a revelation for this woman accustomed to a quiet life and the comforts of home. She came to appreciate New Yorkers’ grit and persistence. She also sees the city as a microcosm of the world. A fitting training ground for an aspiring Miss Universe. Sirey is currently on her second foray into New York City life. This time, she came to pursue a bachelor’s degree in business administration. During the fall of 2015, she traveled home to compete in the Miss Honduras pageant, beating eleven other contestants. Rather than resting on her laurels, winning the Miss Honduras title has sharpened her focus. “Unlike Colombia and Venezuela, where beauty queens are superstars, beauty pageants barely register in my country,” she observes, “Because of this, the women who have been crowned Miss Honduras have lacked the necessary support to do well in the Miss Universe pageant.” While most contestants accept and work with whatever support is made available to them, others are more proactive and seek ways to boost their chances for success. For her part, Sirey is sure about one thing; she is in it to win. She has put her entrepreneurial skills to good use by single-handedly reaching out to potential supporters. She already lined up a couple of sponsors and trainers. “I am lucky to be in New York City as I prepare for the Miss Universe competition. Here, I have access to resources and opportunities that I might not otherwise have in my country.” She adds, “I find that it is a lot easier to approach influential people in this city and start a conversation. Thankfully, most of them have been very receptive and have expressed an interest in being a part of my journey.”

IN FEATURE Sirey, however, is not just looking out for herself. She wants to establish a support system that also benefits future Miss Universe contestants from Honduras. “I have first-hand knowledge of the challenges they will face and, chances are, they will not have access to the same opportunities I have enjoyed,” she points out matter-of-factly. Hers will not be a hands-off legacy; Sirey plans to be actively involved by serving as a mentor to those who follow in her footsteps. The mark of a true queen is not just in how she carries herself, but in her inclination to assist others. In addition to helping future Miss Honduras titleholders, she is looking to make a difference in her country. Besieged by serious political and socioeconomic problems, Honduras is the second poorest country in Central America. Instead of deploring this situation, Sirey sees it as an opportunity to do good. “A little can go a long way. I once visited a hospital in the countryside and noticed they did not have enough bedsheets; some of the patients were laying on a beds covered with just a mattress protector.” That prompted her to start a drive to collect bedsheets for that hospital. Such is the strength of her pull that, in addition to collecting needed supplies, a group of donors offered to travel to Honduras with her and deliver the donations in person. For Sirey, the above is just the tip of the iceberg. She plans to take advantage of an upcoming meeting with the current president of Honduras, Juan Orlando Hernandez, to discuss possible ways to help the country move forward. “In particular, I am interested in bringing opportunities to people in remote areas of my country, for they are the ones most affected by poverty,” she says. Her active interest in tackling pressing social problems marks a break from tradition. Prior to Sirey’s crowning, Miss Honduras titleholders were not expected to serve as goodwill ambassadors, much less as changemakers. Their role has been limited to representing their country at the big event. By all accounts, Honduras unwittingly chose a representative that has all the makings of a trailblazer, one poised to take the Miss Universe stage by storm. Yet her real legacy goes beyond the glitz of an annual event. Her fighting spirit is making great strides in her personal and professional development, and changing the lives of others. In that respect, she is already a winner.

Edmund Druilhet ilm “The Banksters Madoff with America” Interview with Producer/ Director Edmund Druilhet, a Congressional award winning filmmaker.

INdulge: Why did you make this film? And what do you expect will happen with it? Edmund: Well, in order to have a revolution we first must have a revelation and that’s the truth revealed. My film reveals a lot of truth about what’s currently relevant. Bernie Madoff was at the hub of a group of global banksters and tyrants. INdulge: I see you had Tom Sizemore from “Saving Private Ryan,” Michael Madsen from “Reservoir Dogs,” David Carradine from “Kill Bill,” and many others in your film. How long did it take you to make it? Edmund: Well, I’m still working on a new cut to be released soon. So, I could say over seven years in the works.

88 indulgememagazine.com

INdulge: Wow, that’s a long time for one film. I also understand you shot it in eight countries. How has this journey been - because I have heard that you have encountered obstacles such as people trying to stop you even to the extent of having your life threatened? Edmund: Well, yes and yes. I was warned more than a few times but it’s too big a story not to tell and I believe we’re all here on the planet to do something. So, this is my contribution - just living my mission. I connect dots and tell stories that I believe have great humanitarian value. INdulge: Great. I like that about you. I wish there were more people like you and I’m happy to see that Congress gave you a Congressional Award 600 for humanitarian effort – the same as Michael Jackson. I recently saw in the media that you pointed out how ABC network copied over 12 of your scenes in this Bankster Madoff movie series. Why do you think ABC so blatantly did this, especially considering you released your first version four years before them? How does this help them?

INdulge: Wow, now that’s amazing that they wouldn’t have included that. Edmund: I’ll give you one more thing they chose to leave out of their propaganda film entitled “Madoff.” As a point of fact, when one investigating a crime marries one being investigated they can no longer testify in court against the person they marry. And that’s exactly what the investigator from the SEC, Eric Swanson, did with Bernie Madoff’s niece Shawna Madoff. The magical question is – why would they leave this out? And I believe the answer is this: ABC, as well as Robert De Niro and HBO’s movie, “The Wizard of Lies” have waited seven years to release their Madoff movies in order to overshadow mine which tells a much different and sinister story of global take-over. INdulge: Makes me wonder how and if De Niro and his partner Jane Rosenthal were involved with Madoff? Edmund: Yes and it’s in my film. INdulge: How can we see your movie? Now, I’m really interested. Edmund: There is a version currently available on Vimeo. vimeo.com/ondemand/5639 INdulge: I have to ask this question. What’s your next film or have you already started one? Edmund: Yes, I have. One of them is “The Battle of Pharmageddon.” It deals with the pharmaceutical industry as a sinister enterprise started by the Banksters. In addition, I’m currently finalizing a deal on a documentary with the #1 alternative cancer-curing doctor in the world, Dr. Leonard Coldwell, to shoot the best expose on the cancer industry as well as helping patients and families to become more aware of effective alternative cures. Edmund: We have to look at this in context. The Banksters own all of the media including ABC. In fact, if one does the research, the ABC/Disney executives were involved with Madoff which includes the cover-up. I will tell you a little secret. For example, what ABC chose NOT to copy in my movie was the fact that (as also mentioned in Fortune Magazine) Bernie Madoff’s mother, Sylvia Madoff, was shut down by the SEC in 1963, out of her house in Queens New York. Bernie was just two years out of college and living at home at the time. Why did they leave this out?

INdulge: Well, Edmund, I have to be honest. I didn’t expect this to be such a revealing interview. Can we arrange another time to continue? Edmund: Sure. Thank you for your time – and courage.

Peter Bailey

eter Bailey’s career in music spans more than two decades. In that time he has accumulated over 100 releases and remixes, including five #1 hits on the Billboard Dance Charts. His work has been released on labels such as Transmit, Tronic, Toolroom, KD, Nervous, to name a few. He has performed at Pacha NYC, Cielo NYC, Space NYC, Womb Tokyo, Space Miami, Stereo Montreal. We caught up with him at his studio to ask him a few questions. INdulge: Many in your industry wear different hats at various times in their careers. What are some of your titles and positions? Bailey: I am a DJ/Producer and I’ve been at this for more than 20 years in some aspect. I started out DJing and then began producing in ’98. As a DJ I play at a lot of different venues around the states as well as overseas. And

90 indulgememagazine.com

as a Producer I have my own studio where I spend most of my time working on original productions, remixes as well as productions for other people. INdulge: Share with us what your typical work day looks like? Bailey: My routine starts around seven in the morning. I shower, stretch, meditate, and then there’s my beloved coffee. I get in my first 3 hrs of studio time after that. I find these first few hours to be the most productive, I suppose its a combination of a fresh mind and the caffeine rush. I like all of my energy to be focused on these few hours so I usually don’t eat until this session is done. Then I’ll have a bite, mess around online for a little, check Facebook, read articles and go through some music. From here I’ll either go back to work, or do some exercise. During the summertimes I hit the park on my bike, then run and take some sun. Colder months I hit

the gym. Then I’m back to work for a few hours. Sometimes I take my laptop and headphones to Starbucks because I like to work on music in an environment other than my studio. It helps me get a different vibe and perspective, and of course there’s the coffee. At times I’ll do a night time session. I like to get in at least 7-10 hrs of studio time a day depending on where my head is at. If I have something that I’m really feeling I can spend well over 12 hours on it for the day. INdulge: How did you get started in the business? Bailey: I was twelve years old. My brother had friends with DJ equipment and one time he had a party at our house. They brought the equipment over for the party and in the morning I snuck down and started messing with it. From that moment I was hooked. I would take my parents tape player and turntable, and my friend had some crappy little mixer that I hooked it up to. It has been a key part of my life ever since. I would tag along with my brother’s friend who did mobile parties and sweet sixteens. They would show me how to program, which was a way of controlling the overall flow and vibe of the music at appropriate times during the set. By age 15 I was good enough to be earning income through DJing. In high school I was throwing parties and making way too much money for a kid my age, and I would spend it all on records. In college I played at the local night club 2 or 3 nights a week. After college I hooked up with a friend who was into production and he introduced me to that aspect of the business. From there I put together some production equipment, a computer, sampler and synthesizer, and I began creating my own music. INdulge: Starting out, were there moments in your career when you felt like giving up? Bailey: Absolutely. There were quite a few times when I wanted to quit. But I could never abandon music. It’s so embedded in me and it defines a part of me. Its in my blood. When I felt like walking away there was always something that kept calling me back. Like anything else it’s an ebb and flow, like life. But when you truly love something you’ll always go back to it. INdulge: How did you overcome your obstacles? And when did you find your sweet-spot? Bailey: Sheer dedication. When you focus whole heartedly on something and you don’t look at what anyone else is doing, and stay completely true to yourself you’ll usually find your way out of whatever obstacles are in your way. Staying true to yourself is essential. When you lose that, trouble comes. I found my sweet-spot after a difficult time in my life when I was going down the wrong path. It was a defining moment for me because I made a commitment to focus solely on music. No distractions. I was in the studio for insane amounts of time. I would actually sleep there most of the week. This is when things clicked for me. Its very cliche,’ but hard work does pay off, and of course staying true to yourself and not being distracted by what others are doing is essential.

INdulge: Did you have a mentor? Bailey: I did, and I have to admit I was very fortunate to have him come into my life. I had befriended Anthony Acid early on when I started to become interested in production. I would go to his studio and watch him. And when I was going through this difficult time he actually gave me a position at his record label and studio to sort of run things for him. But more importantly he also let me move my equipment into one of the rooms and this is where my skills really developed. It was a special time for me, there was such a great energy in that studio. It was really a place that nurtured creativity and productivity, and Anthony was a key component to my growth and achievements. I also have to mention my long time friend and collaborator Richie Santana. He also introduced to the production side of things and our collaborative efforts also contributed to me honing my skills. We also spun together quite a bit, and it was awesome to be able to travel the world with someone who have respect for. INdulge: Who were your influences as far as style, and how would you describe your style? What is your process for creating music? Bailey: The old school NY DJs were really instrumental for me. Junior Vasquez, Danny Tenaglia, David Morales, Masters at Works etc. I’m not sure how I would describe my style, though it always has a lot of energy. When creating music, I usually start with the beats, the groove, which there is always a bass line. From there I’ll add some vocals or some sort of melodic hook from samples or a synthesizer. Once that is tight, I’ll arrange the track. And finally mix it down properly to make sure the sound is tight. INdulge: What are some of the trends you’ve seen evolve in the industry recently? Bailey: Obviously there has been sort of a revolution in media itself with the current technologies, making it easier for anyone to create music or other types of media. Which is a great thing as it gives people the ability to create music even if they don’t have money. It’s a positive thing that money has nothing to do with creating good music now. However it has opened the flood gates for an immense amount of mediocre music, and that does make it harder to stand out. And in relation to this I’ve noticed a definite trend in the past 5 years or so, where quantity now out weighs quality, which I believe is unfortunate. To be completely honest you don’t really need much talent to make it in dance music these days. Talent has taken a back seat to online presence and marketing. So long as you are consistently releasing the accepted mediocrity, and your on top of your social media, I think you can do well. I’m not sure if this model lends itself to longevity though. INdulge: Where do you see yourself in five to ten years? Bailey: I will definitely be doing something related to music in some capacity. The need for that creative output is essential to who I am. But I definitely see myself diversifying into possibly other avenues in media like video. INDULGE | Spring Edition 91

DJ Saved My Life I A

This interview took place over drinks at Cebu restaurant in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, on April 15th. She had flown in from Miami two hours before and was set to promote a party for Chris Brown at Space Ibiza at 637 west 5th st in Manhattan.

I was like, “Whow, this is something different.” The whole night seemed like one long rollercoaster of sounds and vocal arrangements that I had never heard before. Back then it was rare that people went to Clubs to hear a DJ. It wasn’t unheard of, but it was pretty rare. People went because of the promoters who had managed to build names for themselves by creating hot spots, either through luck or connections, or both.” INdulge: “And who was responsible for this roller coaster of sound and vocals?” Kriste Lee: “So, let me set this up for you. I wound up at SoundFactory one night because one of my friends couldn’t get into Expo. I didn’t like it at all. The music was nothing special. The DJ at that time was Eddie Baez. Not saying anything bad about him, but he just didn’t do it for me. So I stayed away for a while. But when I did go back, there was that insane sound again, and I knew it had to be the same guy. So I told myself that I had to find out who the hell this DJ was. It turned out his name was Jonathan Peters.”

INdulge: “When did the house scene start for you?” Kriste Lee: “My first Club was Palladium when I was 17, back in ‘91, and it pretty much became a ritual for me on Saturday nights. Years went by and nothing really special was happening on the scene until ’96, when I first went to Mirage to meet up with some friends. The music there was insane.

INdulge: “Let’s hear a little more about the infamous SoundFactory.” Kriste Lee: “I spent 6 1/2 years of my life in a place and only missed a handful of nights. It was my 2nd home. I don’t know what Studio 54 was like, because I was too young, but from what I did hear about it reminded me a lot like SF. We were like Family in that place, from the Bouncers,

t isn’t often that someone willingly gives up a successful career in the corporate world of investment banking for the underground club scene. Just ask Kriste Lee, who made the switch because of her infatuation for house music, dancing, and all things night life. She started from the bottom, reinvented herself, and through sheer determination and networking found herself working with some of the most prominent talent on the scene. Jonathan Peters, Skribble, Johnny Vicious, Chris Reda, Tommy Marinelli, Erni Vales, Jonpaul Pezzo, Benny Soto, Mike Nervous, Binoy, Johnpaul Praino. The list goes on, but she admits, “There is one person who I am truly thankful for, and without him, I honestly don’t know where I would be today.”

to the Bartenders, to Coatcheck. But what really kept me going back every single weekend was Jonathan’s music. It was that sound.” INdulge: “Is that where you got into the business end of the life?” Kriste Lee: “I met a guy named Madd Mike, and the two of us started promoting for SF, Carbon, Key Club and a few others. I didn’t care about the money. I just loved the life and it was a natural progression. It was networking is all it was. I would go to Roxy or Tunnel on Fridays & SoundFactory every Saturday. I met a lot of people in the scene and that’s how I got to meet Jonathan. I had my birthday party in SF on November ’99. My good friend Brad rented out a VIP Section for me. My buddy Steve Santamouris got a few Bottles of Don P. My best friend Nicole Reda went up to the DJ Booth to try and get Jonathan to give me a Birthday shoutout, but everyone knows Jonathan does not do that. Instead, he told her to bring me to the booth so he can wish me a Happy Birthday. I was so nervous because he was such an inspiration to me. So I went up there, he said Happy Birthday, then he gave me a CD with a bunch of his unreleased remixes and told me not to give it to anyone. He really made my night. I held on to that CD like it was gold until I got home. And yes, I still have it to this day. ...What’s the next question?” INdulge: “You’re on a roll. I don’t want to stop you.” Kriste Lee: “Okay. So, a few months later my friend Dmitry created a Message board for Jonathan called Deeper Rekords and they asked me to be the Music Moderator. I believe that Jonathan heard I had a good ear for Music through a mutual friend of ours named Jim Heinz. Jim used to work with Jonathan in the Studio back then, though he’s no longer with us. May he Rest in peace. Because I used to make CD’s & bring them to Jonathan every weekend, I would get so excited when I heard him play one of the songs that I chose because it meant that I could deliver hot music.” INdulge: “I’m still listening.” Kriste Lee: “In ’01 I went to Jonathan’s Apt for a meeting with two friends that were going to design his new Website. After the meeting he asked me to stay and chill with him. We had a few drinks, just chilled, and talked for hours about the industry, about different music, what was hot, what was not. He was surprised to hear how much I knew. He asked me how work was going because he knew I was at an investment banking firm.

Investment banking wasn’t my cup of tea even though I was pretty successful at it. I’m a firm believer in doing what you love, and following your heart, and since banking was so lifeless, and was so opposite of what I was into, I let Jonathan know that I had quit just weeks before and was looking to make a go at something full time in the music industry. He was impressed because no one gives up a job like that for a club scene. That’s when he told me he was in the market for an Assistant and wanted to know if I was interested. My heart dropped. I took a deep breath & calmed myself because I didn’t want to seem too excited. But, of course, I said that I would love to work for him.” INdulge: “What was that like, working with Jonathan Peters?” Kriste Lee: “I wouldn’t call it work because I loved it. In a short period of time I had gained such trust from him that I not only became his Assistant, but he made me Music Coordinator, the Assistant to Record Label Manager, and I hosted his parties. You name it, I did it. I guess you can say I am his right hand woman.” INdulge: “A lot different than investment banking I would imagine.” Kriste Lee: “Looking back, the thought of working a 9 to 5 at an investment banking firm was like a prison sentence to me. I never thought that music, and the night life I loved so much could actually be a full time career. But to wind up working for the one person that I had true admiration and respect for was such a blessing, and such an honor, that I can honestly say: Jonathan Peters saved my life.” INdulge: “The industry has been global for a pretty long time. Who else have you met, and who do you admire as an artist?” Kriste Lee: “I have been fortunate enough to meet just about everyone in the music industry and some very talented people: Hex Hector, Jason Ojeda, Skribble, Riz, Sizzahandz, Johnny Vicious, Christian Scott, Angel Moraes, Gonzo, Melissa Nikita, Tommy Marinelli, Danny Tenaglia, Tony Touch, Escape, Guido (RIP), Frankie Bones, Richie Santana, Peter Bailey, Slynkee, Mike Macaluso, Hector Romero, Serge Devant, Cleveland, Anthony Acid, Crazy Legs, Anthony Lamont, Vivacious, A-Luv, Finesse, Shortcutz, KO, Shawn Ink, Eddie Mezz, Steve Psych, Rob Junior, XPLOR, Funk Flex, PS1, Rick Wonder, Denny Tsettos, Theo, among others. A good friend, Chris Reda, introduced me to Mike & Steve of World Party Events and I started working their Events plus Jonathan’s parties at WMC in Miami for six years. I’ve done events for Nikki Beach, Pawn Shop, Space, and Shelbourne.” INdulge: “Do you DJ as well?” Kriste Lee: “I actually don’t, but I have done Vocals on a few tracks. My first was in ’99 with Serge Devant called “The Gift of Life,” which Jonathan played at SF for 13 weeks straight. The other two tracks were with Sieg & Mouzakis called “Body Takes Control,” and “Talking In Your Sleep,” which were both released on a Label in the UK called Plastica.” INdulge: “And what’s Kriste Lee doing with herself lately?” Kriste Lee: “Thankfully I am at a point where I can pick and choose which parties I want to promote. I work with a select few that I have developed a tight relationship with over the years. People like: Jonpaul Pezzo, Benny Soto & Binoy, Johnpaul Praino, to name just a few. At the moment I am working with Erni Vales at his art gallery in Miami —such a talented artist, both in music and on canvas— but tonight I’m working the Chris Brown party at Space Ibiza NY. Why don’t you come by, check it out? Don’t worry. You won’t have to wait on any lines if you’re with me.” INDULGE | Spring Edition 97

VIKKI ZIEGLER The Woman Behind Hot New “Divorce Dating” App

V

ikki Ziegler isn’t just one of the highest profile divorce attorneys there is (Michael Strahan is a client), she’s also a TV talk show host on Bravo, and the founder of a hot new dating app “Divorce Dating.” A recent newly wed (second time around), she’s also a new mother to a baby girl who turns one at the beginning of the summer. Vikki is beautiful, smart, fun to be around, full of energy and quite the achiever.

A typical New Yorker who packs so much into every minute of the day, Vikki has come up with a great solution for people who are divorced who may not “have time to date.” She’s the first female CEO of come up with first online dating app for divorcees. The Divorce Dating app provides a platform of understanding, unique sensitivities and perspectives that those who have been married before, with similar stories and divorce experiences lending to a better dating experience.

As a child of divorce, a divorcee, and a practicing high profile divorce attorney, the word “divorce” has been in my vocabulary all her life. But she’s never looked at divorce as something that’s negative, particularly when there are more than 25 million divorced people in the United States. And those numbers are still climbing. The US Census Bureau says there is one divorce every 13 seconds; which means around 2.4 million per year. That’s roughly 1 in every 5 adults. It probably means the person reading this right now is divorced, which means you are part of a great club. The Divorce Club.

She designed it from her own experiences on a personal and professional level, by using her experience as a divorce attorney and her understanding of why marriages don’t always work out, to pose questions on the app to hopefully find “Mr or Miss Right.” Questions range from the more serious “Why did you divorce? What has divorce taught you?,” To the lighthearted “What movie best describes your divorce?” And guess what? Just because our friends sometimes know us better than we know ourselves, there’s an option that three of your friends can approve your date, and evaluate matches.

Vikki Ziegler decided to embrace the word divorce, and she tells people to try to end a marriage with dignity, and look forward to a new beginning. While she was hosting her show “Untying the Knot” on Bravo, she realized that rather than feel sad about the past and broken hearts and promises along the way, it would be easier to look ahead at positive changes that are out there, and the chance for a new beginning. She doesn’t feel divorce should a stigma. “It’s simply a fact of everyday life,” Vikki says.

Vikki truly believes we all deserve companionship and laughter. Her Divorce Dating app is a fun, elegant and relaxed way to get back out there and start dating again, and is the only online dating platform that truly gives all divorced people a confidence-building environment to communicate, connect and find friendship or even love again. Life is too short to miss out on the joys of a new relationship. Vikki Ziegler has made dating after divorce fun. Divorcees everywhere need to download her app, so they can live “Happily Ever After.”

I

Leslie Silva

By DonnaMarie Recco, Actress/Columnist/Mother/Life Enthusiast

f you’ve seen NBC’s new show SHADES OF BLUE surly you’ve said to yourself, “Man, that Gail Baker is such a Bad Ass.” Actress Leslie Silva talks about working with Jennifer Lopez, Ray Liotta, and her passion outside of acting.

Another great passion of mine is watching other peoples work. I find that to be fulfilling. I watch all different kinds of mediums - comedies, dramas, thrillers… I’ll watch anything because I feel like I’m studying the work.

Confession: I’ve known Leslie Silva for nearly 10 yrs. I had no intension of sharing that with you. I figured I’d just conduct the interview and that would be that. But honestly, I adore this woman because of her talent, her work ethic, and tremendous spirit. So I wanted an interview with her. So there’s THAT… plus she’s been so busy shooting this hit show so it’s a great way to see her and catch up! So without further ado…

INdulge: Well, because you are! You’re an artist in observation. What is your favorite type of photography and tell us a bit about your most recent project. Leslie: Well, I enjoy still-life photography, but I absolutely love taking portraits. It’s an opportunity to really bring a person out of their shell. I just photographed Mayor de Blasio last week and that was a lot of fun! I shot a few mayors. The Mayor of Sweden and the Mayor of Birmingham, Alabama, are just two more off the top of my head. The best part was getting these politicians to loosen up. That’s what I enjoy the most, because then you get these really beautiful candid shots of them.

INdulge: So much of your career as a television actress has been on episodics (Providence; Odyssey 5; Numbers) along with numerous gueststar roles (Nurse Jackie; The Good Wife; Madam Secretary). Is there anything else that you do in between that keeps you creatively occupied? Leslie: Well, I’m glad to have another passion outside of acting, which is photography. And that really takes up a lot of my time. It’s so different, creatively, than acting because I’m on the other side of the camera. And it’s also a relief, because in that sense the pressure is off. It’s just a great love of mine. I really enjoy taking pictures of people and creating sculptural photography. I love all of aspects of photography. 100 indulgememagazine.com

INdulge: So I have to be a mayor to have you shoot my portrait? Leslie: (laughs) Not at all. I was shooting their portraits for a documentary. I’d love to talk about that, but not now. INdulge: Is it a whistle blower? Leslie: ........

INdulge: SHADES OF BLUE is going to have a second season, so congratulations on being apart of its first season’s success! Can you tell us a little bit about working with Jennifer Lopez and Ray Liotta on a regular basis? Leslie: I’m so blessed to have been surrounded by talent of this caliber. Jennifer is the hardest worker I have ever witnessed. I have so much admiration for her. She’s a force. She has absolutely noooo time for drama. Let’s face it, it’s just not in her schedule! (we laugh) I don’t understand how she does what she does. She plays the lead role on a major network television series, she has two children, is rehearsing for her Las Vegas residency, which is a very demanding production to say the least, and holding auditions for American Idol. No time for drama. Not in the schedule! And the fact that she some how manages to look perfectly flawless everyday while doing it? Girl, please! (more laugher... In fact Leslie and I laugh a lot during this interview, so I’ll just stop inserting it!) Cont.... Leslie: We laugh a lot. Once while we were waiting for the cameras to reset I told her that I was bloated and we lost it. She’s great. And Ray, he’s an enormously talented actor. He has an incredible emotional range and extreme intelligence behind his eyes. One of the best ever. We had this great sparring scene and I knew I had to ‘bring it’ because... its Ray f**king Liotta. When he looks at you he is present, with a capital “P”. Indulge: And when you are opposite that kind of presence in a scene you’ve GOT to reciprocate! Leslie: Right! As an actor, you better know what you’re doing. These people (Ray and JLo) are where they are because of that talent. It’s that rare. It’s total fearlessness. INdugle: Sounds intense. Leslie: It’s fun, it’s challenging, it’s a gift to work in my field. I love my job. Indulge: If you had to guess, what do you believe landed you the role of Gail Baker? Leslie: Well, I will say this… the day of my call-back (final audition) I was in Bryant Park and I saw 10 different men wearing white shirts and black slacks walking furiously through the park, and one guy was obviously the leader. It turns out to be Police Commissioner, Will Bratton. And he was pointing and directing everybody and I thought that’s the character! He had enormous power and focus. I noticed he had this look in his eyes, and so I modeled character from that.

an artist’s life in this city? New York could get anyone spun out! Leslie: It’s a constant struggle. I have to meditate in the morning. If I don’t set an intention for my day every morning I might be a bit off. Because you can have a crappy day, but if you have an intention to be grateful and to always come from love, that’s a big one for me, then you can be okay with a crappy day. You can find grace somehow. And even when my mom was dying I had that. It was absolutely horrible, but I was able to find some grace in it. INdulge: I applaud you for keeping up on your meditation at such a pivotal point in your life ... Leslie: Oh, how could I not?! Even if I was in a rush to get to the hospital or hospice, for those two months, if I didn’t do that I would have been a complete disaster. I was able to sit and meditate with my mom, right there in the room. I even put up a sign on the door “Meditating”. And some people would come and join in if they wanted. INdulge: You’re the real deal! Leslie: I was taught transcendental meditation, and you know- for a while I was resentful because you have to pay for it. And that just rubbed me the wrong way. Funny thing is, a friend of mine said to me, “Ya know, you don’t HAVE to keep doing transcendental mediation. There ARE other kinds!” So now I do some Kundalini and various breathing exercises in the morning. I keep gratitude as the focus... Basically now I just come up with my own hodge-podge! Check out Leslie’s photography at www.LeslieSilvaPhotography.com

I thank Leslie for her gracious time, then as I am making her promise to keep taking our calls, who comes waltzing into our west village hide away? It’s none other than actor Paul Ben-Victor, whom we both have worked with. Paul and I worked on an indie comedy called FRIENDS AND ROMANS (filmed in Staten Island, look for it On Demand and Netflix) I also loved watching his work on TRUE DETECTIVE, but you may know him as Maury Gold from HBOs VINYL. Leslie and Paul shot the NBC series ALLEGIANCE together last year. It’s funny that Paul told Leslie back then that she ought to play the role of a cop for a television series… hmmm, premonition? We all share a laugh and of course I get Paul to promise me an interview after his play runs. But for now all I’ll say is this...

Indulge: Let me see the look. (Leslie gives me The Look. And yes, it’s quite disarming!)

To pursuit the arts is a crazy endeavor. You are likely to be surrounded by a bunch of crazy people. Including ones self, of course.... So if you’re not crazy, lucky you.

INdulge: Well, I see how they booked you for the role! How do you balance your life between shooting SHADES Of BLUE, photography, and just living

You can read about crazy here. INDULGE | Spring Edition 101

Cipriani

O

n May 13 1931, Giuseppe Cipriani opened Harry’s Bar in Venice. Located on the first floor of an abandoned rope warehouse off a dead end in Piazza San Marco, Harry’s Bar was designed to be destination in its own right. At 50 square meters, it appeared to be a typical “cozy” Venetian restaurant, but with the careful attention to detail and perfectly proportioned furniture, glasses and cutlery, Harry’s Bar was anything but typical. Unchanged since 1931, its famously relaxed atmosphere, great food and warm service have catered to a very eclectic clientele that has

included through the years Hollywood legends, royalty, artists and people from all over the world. Named a National Landmark by the Ministry of Culture in 2001 it has been constantly imitated but never reproduced. The restaurant has been and continues to be overseen by Arrigo Cipriani. In 1981, Arrigo opened Harry’s Dolci on the island of Giudecca in Venice, an oasis of tranquility located next to an old mill, with tables carefully placed along the front of the city’s largest canal.

Cipriani’s establishments in Venice became so popular that demand for them spread to the other side of the Atlantic and in 1985 Arrigo and his son Giuseppe opened Harry Cipriani on a corner of the majestic Central Park, located at 59th Street and Fifth Avenue followed by Cipriani Downtown in Soho in 1996, long before Soho became the exciting, eclectic neighborhood that it is today. In 1999 Giuseppe Cipriani, third generation of the family, had the vision to acquire a landmark building that formerly housed the Bowery Savings Bank. Originally built in 1921 by Louis Ayres, with its inlaid geometric marble floors, beautiful chandeliers and 65 foot ceilings it is conveniently located across another landmark, Grand Central Terminal. Giuseppe believed that a space of this beauty needed a more exciting life and Cipriani 42nd Street became, as a banquet facility, the setting of the most elegant social events and Galas enjoyed every day by hundreds of people. The success of this venue led Giuseppe to acquire, with a well known developer, another beautiful landmark building at 55 Wall Street. This powerful structure of Greek revival architecture, built in 1852, housed the Merchant’s Exchange, the New York Customs House and the National City Bank (today Citibank). This noteworthy treasure, empty for some time, gained again a new life with Giuseppe Cipriani. Much to the delight of local Wall Street professionals, and an international sophisticated clientele, the first Cipriani Club Residences opened, together with an

exquisite restaurant. The ballroom, with its 70 foot Wedgwood domed ceiling and grand monolithic columns hosts all kinds of beautiful events, concerts and fashion shows. In 2014 another historical landmarked building was added to the collection of event spaces, Cipriani 25 Broadway that was known before as the Cunard building. Many other projects followed internationally including Cipriani Yas Island in Abu Dhabi, Cipriani Hong Kong in the landmarked Old Bank of China building, Mr. C Hotel in Beverly Hills, developed by Maggio and Ignazio Cipriani, fourth generation of the Cipriani family, Downtown Ibiza, Cipriani Monte Carlo, Cipriani Downtown in Miami, Cipriani Masaryk in Mexico City and the recently opened Cipriani Dubai. After over 80 years and led by second, third and fourth generation Cipriani family members, Arrigo, Giuseppe, Ignazio and Maggio Cipriani, and an experienced senior management team, the family, still faithful to their original values of Simplicity, Service, Respect of Tradition and Freedom is today a leader in the hospitality service world.

Brooklyn Winery

et in the heart of Williamsburg, Brooklyn Winery produces premium small batch artisanal wines that —as one of the co-founders of the facility— Brian Leventhal would like to say, “combines the quality of tradition with the freedom of innovation.” The Winery offers weekly tours, a full wine bar with a seasonal menu of wines crafted on site, exquisite cuisine, a private events venue for gatherings and tastings, and full-size wedding services. We took a tour of the facility with Brian to see what Brooklyn Winery was all about. INdulge: “Share with us what a typical day here looks like?” Brian: “The fun thing about our business is that there’s no typical day at Brooklyn Winery. It’s seasonal due to the product. Harvest season takes place from September through November when we are busy doing the majority of our winemaking. Grapes arrive and our space buzzes with the entire production process. During the summer months, we are in the height of wedding season and a lot of our time is spent hosting events. Throughout the year, if you come in on a week night you’ll see lively wine bar tours and tastings going on. Winemaking is always the core of

120 indulgememagazine.com

our business so we are passionate about bringing people together to celebrate life moments – big or small – over a glass of wine, of course.” INdulge: “How did you and John get started in the business?” Brian: “John Stires and I met at a tech startup company back in 2007. The company we worked at was unrelated to wine but one of our coworkers lived in New Jersey. One day, she told us that she drove by a sign on the road that said, “make your own wine,” and she asked if anyone wanted to make wine with her. John and I were still new employees so we thought it would be a great way to get to know our coworkers. We ended up falling in love with the process and going to New Jersey about five times a year to make wines that we’d share with family and friends. After doing that for three years, John and I thought about how much we enjoyed making wine but wished we didn’t have to trek out to New Jersey to do it, especially because we didn’t have cars. That was how the idea for Brooklyn Winery came about – we wanted to create an accessible space where we could make great wine closer to the city.”

INdulge: “Starting out, were there moments or times when you felt like giving up?” Brian: “Yes, it was scary in the beginning. A lot happened so quickly – we both quit our jobs with nothing but an idea. We hired our winemaker, signed a lease, built the space out, and opened our doors in under a year. We ran into obstacles with our space because we had to negotiate leases, and getting a license to open a winery in the heart of Brooklyn wasn’t the easiest thing in the world. There were many moments where we wondered if we bit off more than we could chew.” INdulge: “How did you overcome your obstacles?” Brian: “John and I have entrepreneurial spirits and a huge passion for winemaking. We had a lot of people say that our timeline was unrealistic. However, everything came together through pure perseverance and desire to make it work. We did a lot of the work ourselves and brought in summer interns who were excited to get their hands dirty with us and really learn the business – from construction to profit margins. We buckled down and got things done.” INdulge: “Did you have a mentor?” Brian: “When John and I were still in the ideas phase and working on our

business plan at the Brooklyn Public Library, we found out about SCORE. It’s a free resource and national organization led by successful, retired businessmen. They support people who are starting companies and our assigned mentor, Herb Marks, gave us very helpful advice. He was a sounding board for us throughout the process, bringing up points that we hadn’t even thought of before. As things progressed, I became involved with a group of executives at successful companies and we’d go out to dinner a few times a year. I’m by far the youngest person in the group and it’s really exciting. Hearing everyone’s experiences and advice has been a great, organic process that has allowed me to grow in so many ways.” INdulge: “How does Brooklyn Winery shine in the industry? What do you feel you do here better than most in the industry and sets you apart from the rest?” Brian: “Brooklyn Winery has a lot of components that come together to make it unique. There’s the winemaking side and the hospitality side. I believe we have been successful with winemaking because we don’t cut any corners. From day one, we took a hard stance on quality which is fundamental to who we are and the product we make. Starting with hiring our winemaker, Conor, we created a network of people and vineyards that allow us to produce the best wine available in an urban setting.” INDULGE | Spring Edition 121

“On the hospitality side, when we decided to make Brooklyn Winery an events space, we thought about what kind of experience we would want to have if we were customers. From the moment someone finds our website and meets with our team, to the event itself, we truly believe we offer an elevated level of service. We’re take great pride in that. The core of that service is that we hire people who genuinely care about what they do. It’s not just about talent and skill – personality is a huge aspect. We look for friendly, caring individuals who are going to prioritize our clients. We also stick to what we do best. We work with vendors who we trust and provide a one-of-a-kind venue and full service experience.” INdulge: “How is the wine industry different in Brooklyn as opposed to other areas?” Brian: “I can only really comment on Brooklyn, but people here have curious and open minds. We love helping people learn about winemaking and allowing them to experience different things. That really is the core of why we do what we do. Our audience tends to skew younger (people in their mid-20s to late 30s) and they’re willing to learn and experiment. We love to offer tasting flights of the same type of grape, to highlight the nuances of winemaking in an accessible and tangible way.” INdulge: “How does Brooklyn Winery stay relevant and ahead of the curve in an industry as competitive as yours?” Brian: “It’s really important for people to form a personal connection with our space and wines – that’s something that will keep us relevant in an organic way that’s a testament to our quality and service. We also have a great reserve program, which is like a loyalty program at our wine bar 122 indulgememagazine.com

where people accrue points for their purchases. We really want people to feel at home at Brooklyn Winery and love what we’re doing as much as we do.” INdulge: “What are your customers looking for at the present time? What kind of wines do you carry, and what are some of the trends that you see evolving in the market for the future?” Brian: “We are trying to create a diverse lineup of wines that are great for food pairings but can also be enjoyed on their own. Being an urban winery affords us the opportunity to source grapes from a variety of different regions throughout the country and create a wide array of wines. Very few wineries can bring in gorgeous Riesling grapes from the cool Finger Lakes region in upstate New York, as well as Zinfandel grapes from the intensely hot Lodi, California region. Although it’s more expensive to source the grapes that we do, we know that our customers recognize good product in a bottle and are willing to spend a little bit more on quality.” INdulge: “Where do you see your company in five to ten years?” Brian: We have an exciting new project on the horizon. We will be opening the first ever winery in the District of Columbia. Similar to Brooklyn Winery, we will feature an urban winery sourcing high end fruit from throughout the country, a restaurant and full-service event space. We are very excited to expand to the DC market and bring our passion for wine and hospitality to this growing market.” Brooklyn Winery is located at 213 N 8th St, in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, or you can visit them on their website bkwinery.com

Windows on Red Bank Write Your Own Next Chapter By Daniel Murphy, Jr. Danny’s Steak House

T

he following is not written for everyone. For those it fits you will know who you are. I am one of you.

There are many stages or chapters in our lives that are written by other people. From the age of one to ten it is our parents and teachers giving us social and learning skills. From the age of ten to twenty our peers join in with the above and we struggle to “grow up” and join the adult world. We seem to race through our teens to get to adulthood, whatever that is. Guided by social standards established eons ago we create a career and look for a mate and have a family. This is done from twenty to thirty with some smarter ones waiting until later in life to accomplish the latter. From thirty to forty all hell seems to break loose. Our lives somehow written by the past is not always what we want in our present. Men approaching forty seem to panic having a sense of missing out on life, leave their families to establish new relationships, remarry, have a second family only to find themselves in the same boat they were before. Some women follow the same course, but mostly women will hold on to a marriage or relationship from fear of abandonment, for the sake of the children, fear of finances, etc., until all hope is gone or the man makes her so miserable that “enough is enough.” A very smart man, Michael Cantor, told me once that there was only one thing worst then being alone and that is wishing you were alone. From the age of forty to fifty and over a number of us find ourselves single, having been married once or twice and trying one-on-one relationships for short periods of time. The chapters that were written for us by ours we drag around as luggage and will ultimately get in the way of those relationships. The women who have had abusive relationships with most of the men in their lives will run away from a man who is not a “bad guy” feeling they don’t deserve him and will punish themselves by staying alone. I got that tidbit from a friend at the Women’s Center of Monmouth County. Men 124 indulgememagazine.com

on the other hand will seek out younger women trying to recapture some stage of their lives. I have given a number of men the following advice, “You had better check all the angles before you go charging after that cute young thing, the price of admission could be very steep.” That line seems to always cause them to blink. Relationships can be successful even if they don’t end at till death do us part. If your relationship had a beginning, a middle and an end and there is no “blood shed” or permanent injuries the relationship was a success. It was part of the journey we are on and it is time to move on. Relationships are only one part of the equation. Careers, mental and physical health are affected by these chapters that were written for us by others. The good news about growing older and having these life experiences is that if we reflect back and see what was wrong with those chapters we have two options: One is to continue in the same direction and with that the phrase applies; insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. Two is to decide that we are going to close the page on our last chapter and thank God we got through it and are still alive. It is time to write our own chapter as to what is going to happen next in our lives. It is a fresh page and by drawing on our life experiences from the past we can determine what we want and don’t want now. I am going to try once again to have a balance to my life, one-third for work, one-third for family and loved ones and one-third for vacation. Vacation can mean going to the gym, reading a book, taking a trip or staying in bed for the day alone or otherwise. It means you go anywhere, be with who you want and live a life that puts a smile one your face. Who knows, we might all find that magical island to live on in our hearts. Vivian Pisano

I

By Barbara Strafella

f your husband gives you a designer handbag for Christmas and you exchange it for a camera lens you must be Vivian Pisano, owner of the Secret Garden Spa. Vivian has expanded her horizons by exploring the world of photography. Mrs. Pisano studied at FIT and has always considered photography a passion; however this passion took a backseat while she successfully opened her own salon and spa on Staten Island. At the Secret Garden Spa, Vivian mastered hairdressing and worked intently with editorial magazines and photographers. She learned about angles, lighting, and photography techniques. Vivian started taking photographs of her clients and uploading them to social media. She kept investing in better photography equipment, started to pursue her dreams, and combined her two passions into one ambition. One of her goals was to recreate a space like the photo-shoots she worked on offering hair, make-up and photography under one roof. “My mission with the salon and photography is for women to become the best possible versions of themselves. Women are beautiful inside and out, and that beauty needs to be discovered” Vivian loves making women feel great about themselves and showing true beauty through her photography. As Mrs. Pisano’s passion for photography grew, she created a quaint studio within The Secret Garden. Her vintage and classic style is brought out in her techniques. Vivian makes her portraits look authentic through the use of various photo-editing styles, including a brush stroke effect, to give her photographs texture. Vivian’s unique style sets her apart from any photographer. In the future, Mrs. Pisano hopes to travel and explore landscape photography. Loredana

Gasparotto

M

y name is Loredana Gasparotto. I was born in Italy, beneath the shadows of the Venetian Prealps foothills. Like any individual anywhere across the globe, I grew and came of age in blissful obscurity. Like the town covered in the silhouette of the Alps, the person I had once been was living in the shadows… However, the essence of me – the identity residing dormant within my soul–was never truly conceived until I arrived in New York City. It wasn’t until the moment my feet touched the “terra ferma” of Manhattan that I realized, in this new country across the vast expanse of the Atlantic, that I finally had the opportunity to recreate myself. The Loredana of Bassano Del Grappa had passed away. What took her place was a new woman, one who had been born of her own creativity and ideas – one with the dream of being able to tell the story of all of us who continue on, dissatisfied, with seemingly predestined lives of ambiguity. I shed the skin of my former self and began to grow another. I enrolled myself in film school so that I could relate these stories of self-conception on screen for anyone in the world to see. Through film I could reveal our birthing pangs – the trials of those of us who struggle to locate our souls at the center of the act of artistic creation. I could expose on screen the struggles that the chaotic, creative, and yet fertile mind experiences as it constantly faces opposition from a society that craves order and favors mediocrity. Because of film I understood that I could relate a story to the audience that would speak to and awaken the dormant artist within them. Pentimento was conceived because of this desire to live a true life. With your help, Pentimento, the story of us all, can be born.

much tougher then that. The city does, however, offer the freedom to pursue your dreams. Perhaps it is that freedom that attracts generation after generation, from all over the world, to leave everything they have for the unknown. Stories of immigration are always fascinating to me, and in a country like America, these stories can reach a large number of people with that shared experience. One of the issues I want to explore through the characters in Pentimento, are the lengths that they are willing to go to in order to survive and preserve their desires. As Sofia, the main character in Pentimento, struggles to pursue her dreams and create a new life in New York, so Connor struggles to deflect the expectations of his family and find his path as an artist, while those same family’s members appear willing to stop at nothing, even if that means sabotaging their son’s immigrant girlfriend. All of this introduces the themes of integrity, sacrifice and the search for love and happiness.

Vision Statement Pentimento, my first feature length work, is a fictionalized interpretation of my New York immigration story and a turning point in my life. Starting a life in America opened up a new universe of discoveries, problems, issues of identity and self-image that I could never have prepared for. And speaking with other individuals who have had similar experiences, emigration forces you to examine, redefine and usually reinvent who you are. Throughout that period of my life I came in contact with all the strata of society, from the very wealthy to the destitute, from those who are warm and giving, to those who are criminal. As an outsider, without a community of my own and without any preconceived ideas on how to pursue my dreams, I lived in all the five boroughs, not always by choice. But this reality afforded me the opportunity to observe how a variety of people experienced life, often based on their cultural backgrounds. You learn quickly that New York is more than just the idyllic cosmopolitan city from childhood dreams. It’s

Finally, I’m looking to create a film about two modern heroes; lovers who are unafraid to take the chance to find themselves. Perhaps even people who can be an inspiration others. These are what great heroes and antiheroes do: they transcend their circumstances, and by doing so, they inspire us to have hope and not give up our dreams. It Is Worth Mentioning The Importance Of New York City In My Story! I have had a love affair with New York since I arrived. To me it embodies all of the above ideas and themes that move me most: people coming together from different places, sometimes in an explosive way, sometimes in a complimentary way. The city is a character. There could be no better location for Pentimento. Since I’m looking to portray the unpolished, “glamorously poor” side of New York I’d like to employ as many struggling and immigrant artists as possible. So far, I found four wonderful collaborators who will donate their music talent, artwork and photography to make this film a unique experience.

“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. It’s not just in some of us; it’s in everyone. I N D U L G E HOROSCOPES There isn't a better time of the year to set our sights on the lazy days of Summer; as the Summer Solace is truly the "indulgent" Mid Summer Night's Dream! It has been said that the night of this summer day opens a portal to a mystical evening. The energies of the Moon will surround us with unique fragrances and feelings of togetherness that seeks emotional connection. Although the New Moon on June 4th ushers in the preparation for Summer...the Full Moon on June 20th will show us the "mystical" side of our summer nights in all it's beauty. June will be a time of mental contemplation as we prepare ourselves for new experiences in versatile communications. The wonderfully curious side of this months energy presented by Gemini can leads us to exploring writing skills, how to projects and local travel for the benefit of relaxing and exploring. Whatever you choose, know that Gemini's energy will give it's all to the project or the journey. In July we can experience the nurturing side of Cancer, the moon child, to provide food for the body as well as the soul with love and commitment. Family and Friends are the corner stone of celebrating this time of the year without the heaviness of day to day tasks. We are geared towards vacation planning, sunny beach days and outdoor barbeques. The emotional connection Cancer has with family can provide a security and stability leaving us to feel warmly connected when the world seems to be a little too much. With the New Moon on the 4th of July, you can be sure the "fireworks" will be of the heart as well. Try not to obsess over love and turn it into obligation. Take a step back. These next two months will give us clarity to the things that we need to let go of as well as what is valuable to hold on to. By the end of June, we will feel a sense of relief but also the need to get things moving. It may move a little too fast for us to get a grip on but it will spark us to get busy with our plans. We'll be ready to take action and have a focus on the loves of our lives and how we need to show that love to people as well as interests. Those interests are focused on "action" but not with physical energy, though we may need a little of that too, but more with mindful ideas and creativity to find the side of our spirit that needs exercise in expanding our understanding of how our lives need to be lived with joy and gusto. Enjoy this unique summer and look no further than your own "spiritual" backyard to find harmony and peace. The lazy days of Summer awaits!
