IN BEAUTY

9 STEPS TO WINTERIZE YOUR SKIN “Now is the winter of our discontent.” With regard to our complexions Shakespeare’s words seem to ring truer than ever. The biting wind and frigid temperatures outside, coupled with heavy, dry indoor heating, are a perilous cocktail for the skin. It’s one that not even Hollywood is exempt from (the cold of Sundance Film Festival is looming, after all). And just as we dutifully shift our wardrobes with the passing of the seasons — swapping the flimsy summer dresses for weightier knits — so should we pay the same scrupulous attention to crafting a beauty regimen that is seasonally appropriate. And that applies to both skin care and makeup. Here, we offer an INDULGE approved prescription (and, of course, a suggested product arsenal to accompany it) for combatting a beauty-related seasonal disorder.

1. THE CLEANSER

2. THE OIL

3. THE MOISTURIZER

4. THE EYE CREAM

Because skin is particularly vulnerable to the moisture-zapping effects of cold weather and indoor heating, cleansing should be a thoroughly gentle affair. Shelf all foams and gels for the time being in favor of a milky or balm variety. This dense balm is TLC in cleanser form; gingerly massaged into the skin (never, ever with too-hot water!) it will decongest and smooth without drying. Eve Lom Cleanser

The sun casts a powerful glare, even in the winter months, which means a day should not go by without some kind of protection. This moisturizer has a luxurious texture and feel against the skin, an adequate dose of daily SPF to shield against UVA and UVB rays, and a formula that has the added boon of boosting collagen and brightening. La Prairie Anti-Aging Day Cream Spf 30

68 indulgememagazine.com

Though the complexion can benefit from oil year-round, in the winter months it will be especially grateful for the extra capillary-shielding barrier it provides. That Rodin’s deeply nourishing essential-oil blend — neroli, rose hip, sweet almond, argan, jasmine and evening primrose, among others — smells heavenly makes it that much easier to remember to apply. Use just at night or beneath moisturizer during the day if your skin is especially parched. Rodin Luxury Face Oil

The delicate skin around the eyes is more susceptible than ever when the temperature drops, becoming prone to extra dryness. Count on La Mer to never disappoint — as intensely replenishing as their cult-favorite moisturizer, this eye cream instantly soothes and illuminates. Use it morning, evening and whenever inspiration strikes in between. La Mer The Eye Concentrate

5. THE BALM

In Greek mythology the rose was associated with secrecy, and the Latin phrase sub rosa (under the rose) means something that is carried out in a confidential manner. And a special secret By Terry’s rose-infused treatment most certainly is: The rich, fragrant balm moisturizes and protects both lips and cuticles — exactly how? We cannot be sure. We suggest keeping one in your purse and one bedside. Terry Baume De Rose

6. THE MASK

Swaddling your face in the cocoon of these individual cotton masks drenched with SK-II’s proprietary youth-enhancing Pitera for about 10 minutes’ time has a moth-to-butterfly effect. As ready for travel as they are for home use, they stave off winter’s bone as efficiently as they do the effects of jet lag. Sk-Ii Facial Treatment Mask

7. THE EYE MAKEUP

With winter comes waterworks; forceful wind and freezing temperatures can leave eyes in a perpetual state of tearing up. To keep makeup intact, switch — at least for the season — to a waterproof mascara and eyeliner. Dior Diorshow Waterproof Mascara Catwalk Black

8. THE BRONZER

Winter, because of the accompanying extra time spent ensconced indoors, tends to zap the skin of some of that natural pigment and glow. Consider this featherweight bronzer a touch of summer in compact form. Swipe across the cheekbones and everywhere the sun would naturally hit for an all-over, warm glow. Tom Ford Bronzing Powder Terra

9. THE BLUSH

Blush is the makeup version of magic, in possession of an abracadabra effect on any and every complexion. And when winter’s pallor is upon us, blush — this one imparts that just-right natural, but slightly better, flush — feels more magical than ever. A few generous swipes, and poof — gone are the dull and dreary. Laura Mercier Crème Cheek Colour Blaze

AN EXTRAORDINARY TRIO Changing the World One Film at a Time By Alejandra Ruiz-Dana | Photos by Paul Walker

W

hat do a French actress, the scion of a Greek cruise ship empire, and an Argentinian celebrity hairstylist have in common? Answer: A love of films. Before we get ahead of ourselves, let’s start from the beginning, with Leopoldine Huyghues Despointes’ arrival on the scene. In person and on stage, Leopoldine is a force to be reckoned with. One can literally feel the energy in the room change as she makes her entrance. Her bubbly personality is all the more remarkable because she is from France. That is, she does not exude the superiority complex often associated with her country. It is just as well; one of Leopoldine’s main goals in life is the dismantling of stereotypes and the barriers associated with these. The 25-year-old knows a thing or two about barriers. Born with Osteogenesis Imperfecta, a bone condition that confines her to a wheelchair, she has plenty of stories about streets that are not wheelchair friendly, taxis that will not stop to pick her up and buildings, including ones housing government agencies, that are not accessible. Here’s the thing -she is not complaining. Au contraire. Besides handling such situations with panache and poise, she is doing something about them. “Growing up, I was the only kid at school that was different. That was a good thing because it pushed me to be just like everyone else and it also made my friends more open minded,” Leopoldine recounts. Things got a bit sticky when she decided to leave her parents’ home and move to New York City in order to attend college. “Until then, I did not think of myself as disabled. But I found that, in the U.S., there is a lot of stuff that is out of reach for us (disabled individuals).” Rather than discourage her, the discovery galvanized her into action. “I had to do something,” she says.

To dispel the ignorance surrounding people with different abilities -she finds the word “disabilities” wanting- she teamed up with JR, the worldrenowned French artist, to do a series of portraits. “This population tends to be invisible and that is why society generally does not take it into account,” she explains. The aim of the project, therefore, is to raise awareness by bringing this group to the forefront. This participatory art project is unprecedented both in terms of subject and scope. Tens of thousands of individuals responded to the call for participants. “Some of these individuals had never posed for a photo before. Witnessing their courage was really moving.” The series, titled “(dis)ABLED InsideOut,” has been two years in the making, and it will be unveiled in December, in New York City. 70 indulgememagazine.com

Leopoldine is arguably making her most important contribution through the seventh art, film. She debuted as both producer and actress in the short film Atlantic Avenue (2013). While the idea of the film was sparked by Leopoldine’s newfound realization that disability is overlooked and often dismissed, the plot does not center on that aspect. Rather, it treats her character, Celeste, as a woman with the typical needs and wants of her age. The film was screened to much acclaim at various film festivals and garnered her a Best Actress award in the Milwaukee Film Festival, an impressive feat for a newcomer. She went on to land her first featurefilm role in Jean Emmanuel Godart’s Big House (2015), co-starring Gérard Depardieu. In a sense, the success of Atlantic Avenue sealed Leopoldine’s fate. “It made me realize the power of images. I was supposed to go to law school, but after my first film, I decided, ‘No, I have to make films.’” Leopoldine launched her production company, Vagabonde Productions, at the age of 22. In a field often chided for its lack of diverse voices, her entry heralds a promising change. To date, she has produced two additional films, Rabbit (2014) and A Stone Appears (2016). The latter marks her first collaboration with director Constantine Venetopoulos.

Unlike Leopoldine, Constantine came to filmmaking after spending several years working in the business world. More specifically, his family’s cruise line, Variety Cruises (he is still the company’s ambassador). “Filmmaking was a childhood dream of mine; I always wanted to do it. I put it aside to meet family obligations. Yet, I was always writing. In my head, I was a filmmaker. I was not making films; I was writing them.” When work brought Constantine to the U.S. from his native Greece, he decided that he would explore his artistic yearning once he got his Green Card. Shortly after becoming a permanent resident, he had an opportunity to work at Columbia University, at the School of Arts. During the course of his term there, he became acquainted with a group of filmmakers. He wound up assisting them in their filming and learning the ropes. “I decided then that I want to do this forever,” he says with a tinge of relief. Constantine made his first foray into film with Perchance (2013). The short was inspired by a personal loss, a loss that sparked an exploration of emotional triggers. “We all carry emotional baggage and there are

triggers that open such baggages. I wanted to make a film about that,” he explains. The result is haunting and deeply affecting. “A lot of people told me the film spoke to them. That’s what this medium is about. It’s about connecting with your audience.” Constantine continued probing the psyche in A Stone Appears (2016), his second short film. Unlike his first film, which was tightly planned, A Stone Appears evolved organically. “With Perchance, I knew what I wanted to do, so I was controlling all the pieces. With A Stone Appears, I allowed the universe to take care of it and a lot of things started falling into place.” The story, as the name suggests, centers on a stone whose sudden materialization dramatically alters the characters’ lives. Presently, the film is making rounds on the festival circuit. It was recently screened at the San Diego Film Festival and the Athens Film Festival. After attending the film’s screening in Greece, Constantine’s mother told him, “I thought you were crazy, but maybe you’re onto something.” For Constantine, who had spent most of his life keeping his creativity in check in order to make his family happy, that praise was momentous. In the meantime, Constantine continues to write. This past summer, while vacationing in Greece, he experienced a bout of feverish activity that led him to write a short novel in a 24-hour period. “A Flower Called Chamelia,” which he published on his website (www.ithakafilms.com), is now one of four full-length projects he plans to take to the big screen. The first of these, as yet untitled, is currently in the pre-production stage. He is confident that the production team he has built under the Ithaka Films banner will help make his vision a reality. As with other aspects of his budding film career, chance led Constantine to Marco Maranghello. This Argentinian stunner has built a name for himself as a top hairstylist in New York City. He is currently based at the posh John Barrett salon, located inside the luxury retailer Bergdorf Goodman. His clientele includes celebrities, socialites and even royals. Jennifer Lopez, Martha Stewart, and the queens of Sweden and the Netherlands have been styled by him. “What I love about my craft is its transformative power. I can literally create characters or give someone a new outlook through a hairstyle,” he says. As rewarding as it is, spinning hair tales is not Marco’s sole ambition. He has found creative outlets beyond the salon. He has served as creative director for a number of lifestyle magazines, including Latino Show and Resident. “Planning photo shoots is my specialty. I oversee every detail, even the tiniest one, to make sure we get top results.” His practiced eye and sense of style have been a boon for his collaborators while allowing him to establish successful relationships with institutions like the Miss Universe Organization. In fact, he served as a judge in the Miss Universe Argentina 2015 pageant. All that time spent behind cameras, assessing and modifying looks, should be good practice for what comes next. Earlier this year, Marco joined Ithaka Films as Executive Producer. In addition to hosting a special screening of A Stone Appears at Canoe Studios in March, he has been tirelessly promoting the film. “It holds a lot of promise. There is nothing like it out there,” he asserts, his brown eyes brimming with excitement. Marco plans to serve as the production company’s springboard to Latin America. He will spend the winter in Argentina, scouting locations and courting prospective backers. He is also in the process of developing a series for Argentinian television. “We are still in the negotiation phase, but the goal is to celebrate cultural and artistic diversity. I want to use this medium [television] to highlight what is positive and make a difference by shifting the focus from the ordinary to the extraordinary.” Ultimately, the extraordinary constitutes the common thread in Leopoldine, Constantine, and Marco’s work. Their endeavors might scatter them across the globe, but their creative agency remains complementary. It really is a boundless love affair.

Pies to the Sky

Scrumptious Apple Pie

Ingredients Pastry 2 cups Gold Medal™ all-purpose flour, 1 teaspoon salt, 2/3 cup plus 2 tablespoons shortening, 4 to 6 tablespoons cold water Filling 1/3 to 1/2 cup sugar, 1/4 cup Gold Medal™ all-purpose flour, 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon, 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg 1/8 teaspoon salt, 8 cups thinly sliced peeled tart apples (8 medium), 2 tablespoons butter or margarine Directions 1 In medium bowl, mix 2 cups flour and 1 teaspoon salt. Cut in shortening, using pastry blender (or pulling 2 table knives through ingredients in opposite directions), until particles are size of small peas. Sprinkle with cold water, 1 tablespoon at a time, tossing with fork until all flour is moistened and pastry almost cleans side of bowl (1 to 2 teaspoons more water can be added if necessary). 2 Gather pastry into a ball. Divide in half; shape into 2 flattened rounds on lightly floured surface. Wrap in plastic wrap; refrigerate about 45 minutes or until dough is firm and cold, yet pliable. This allows the shortening to become slightly firm, which helps make the baked pastry more flaky. If refrigerated longer, let pastry soften slightly before rolling. 3 Heat oven to 425°F. With floured rolling pin, roll one pastry round into round 2 inches larger than upside-down 9-inch glass pie plate. Fold pastry into fourths; place in pie plate. Unfold and ease into plate, pressing firmly against bottom and side. 4 In large bowl, mix sugar, 1/4 cup flour, the cinnamon, nutmeg and 1/8 teaspoon salt. Stir in apples until well mixed. Spoon into pastry-lined pie plate. Cut butter into small pieces; sprinkle over filling. Trim overhanging edge of pastry 1/2 inch from rim of plate. 5 Roll other round of pastry into 10-inch round. Fold into fourths and cut slits so steam can escape. Unfold top pastry over filling; trim overhanging edge 1 inch from rim of plate. Fold and roll top edge under lower edge, pressing on rim to seal; flute as desired. Cover edge with 2- to 3-inch strip of foil to prevent excessive browning. 6 Bake 40 to 50 minutes or until crust is brown and juice begins to bubble through slits in crust, removing foil for last 15 minutes of baking. Serve warm if desired.

Rhubarb Custard Pie

Ingredients 1 sheet refrigerated pie dough (from a 14.1-ounce package), 1 1/4 pounds rhubarb (about 6 medium stems), trimmed, halved lengthwise and cut into 1-inch pieces (about 4 1/2 cups), 3/4 cup granulated sugar, 1/2 teaspoon finely grated orange zest, preferably Valencia, 2 tablespoons orange juice, preferably Valencia, 2 large eggs 2/3 cup heavy cream, 1/4 cup all-purpose flour, Confectioners’ sugar, for serving Directions Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Fit the pie dough into a 9-inch pie plate, fluting the edges, and chill until set, about 15 minutes. Prick the bottom and sides with a fork, and then line the crust with aluminum foil. Fill with pie weights or dried beans and bake until the edges of the crust are just golden, 20 minutes. Remove the foil with the pie weights and continue to bake until the bottom of the crust is dry and lightly browned, another 10 to 15 minutes. Cool completely. Toss the rhubarb with 1/4 cup granulated sugar and the orange zest and juice until well combined. Transfer to the crust and spread to form an even layer. Place the pie on a rimmed baking sheet. Whisk the eggs with the cream, flour and remaining 1/2 cup granulated sugar until smooth, and then pour over the rhubarb. Bake until the pie is lightly browned, puffed and no longer wet in the center, about 1 hour 15 minutes. Cool completely on a wire rack. Before serving, lightly dust with confectioners’ sugar.

Pumpkin Pie

Ingredients Pumpkin: 1 medium sugar pumpkin (about 3 pounds), Canola oil, for oiling pumpkin Easy Pie Crust: 2 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for flouring, 1/4 teaspoon salt, 2/3 cup (11 tablespoons) cold unsalted butter, cut into 1/2-inch pieces Filling: One 14-ounce can sweetened condensed milk, 1/2 cup whipping cream, 2 tablespoons cornstarch, 2 tablespoons molasses, 2 tablespoons canola oil, 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon, 1 teaspoon ground ginger, 1/4 teaspoon salt, 3 large eggs Directions For the pumpkin: Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F. Remove the stem from the pumpkin and scrape out the insides, discarding the seeds. Cut the pumpkin in half and lay the pieces cut-side down on a rimmed baking sheet lined with aluminum foil. Rub canola oil all over the skin and bake until fork-tender, about 1 hour. Let cool. For the easy pie crust: While the pumpkin is cooking, make the crust. In a large bowl, combine the flour and salt. Add in the butter and work into the dough with a fork until the mixture is crumbly. Stir in just enough cold water (4 to 5 tablespoons) with a fork just until the flour is moistened. Divide the dough in half, shape each half into a ball and flatten slightly. Wrap one ball in plastic wrap and refrigerate for another use. Roll out the remaining dough ball on a lightly floured surface to a 12-inch round. Transfer to a 9-inch-diameter glass pie dish. Fold the overhangs under and crimp decoratively. Pierce the dough all over with a fork. Chill in the refrigerator for 15 minutes. Line the crust with foil, fill with dried beans or pie weights and bake until the sides are set, about 12 minutes. Remove the foil and beans. Reduce the oven temperature to 350 degrees F. For the filling: Scoop out the pulp from the roasted pumpkin and puree in a food processor until smooth (you should have about 4 cups). Add the condensed milk, cream, cornstarch, molasses, canola oil, cinnamon, ginger, salt and eggs and combine thoroughly. Pour the filling into the crust and bake until the filling is set in the center, about 1 hour. Transfer the pie to a rack and cool for 30 minutes. Serve at room temperature or chilled.

aviar and Champagne have long been considered a perfect gourmet match. The delicious salty taste of the caviar is beautifully enhanced by a dry Champagne.

Choosing a Caviar For the Traditionalist - A Russian Sturgeon Caviar such as Osetra Gold Caviar makes a beautiful pairing with fine champagne. Our black-sea farmed prized caviar is some of the very best golden Osetra caviar we have found worldwide. Delicious with Brut Champagne! For the Wise Connoisseur – Our Imperial Caviar not only brings ultimate taste and texture, but at a very cost effective price. This Caviar is bursting with sea flavors and complex briny notes. For the Value Lover – You cannot beat the very cost effective Wild American Hackleback Caviar. Strong in taste and light on your wallet – this is a great entry point into the world of Caviar and would not disappoint as a Caviar and Champagne pairing.

1990’s produced some excellent vintages. A vintage Krug or Taittinger Comtes de Champagne Blanc de Blancs (The 2000 and 2002 were both excellent) would make a great Caviar and Champagne pairing. For the Wise Connoisseur – There are many great non-vintage (NV) champagnes out there. Bollinger Special Cuvee is an excellent choice, or perhaps a Billecart Salmon. Consider looking for a grower champagne, Gosset NV Brut Grande Reserve is a great choice – grower champagnes are grown in the Champagne region of France but are produce by the same estate that owns the vineyards the grapes come from – usually offering great taste at a lower price point (You are paying more for the wine and less for the marketing!). For the Value Lover – Instead of French Champagne, consider a local, yet equally delicious, Champagne alternative such as the Italian Prosecco, Spanish Cava or a great sparkling wine from California. Whatever your choice – make sure that the Champagne is dry and not sweet!

Choosing a Champagne

Nothing beats the winning pairing of Caviar and Champagne to wow guests, entertain friends or simply to treat yourself!

Where to Enjoy the Best Oysters in New York

Early autumn is oyster season. Though freshly shucked oysters are enjoyable all year round—with a glass of Champagne at the beach, a bottle of rose on a boat—many say that oysters are best in months containing the letter “R.” Following the May–August spawning season, the ocean is replenished with healthy, tasty oysters oh so ready for your consumption. Not only are oysters naturally high in protein and low in fat, they’re packed with important vitamins like calcium, vitamin D, zinc and many more doctor-approved nutrients. So get slurping. Here, a roundup of where to find the best oysters in New York.

These Private Jet Concepts Bring Feng Shui and Sushi Bars to the Sky

100 indulgememagazine.com

I

f flying stresses you out, you should consider calling HAECO Private Jet Solutions to trick your mind into thinking you’re actually in a serene tea house. The Chinese design firm has created two gorgeous private jet interior concepts, one that utilizes traditional feng shui and another that they call “East meets West.”

Considering feng shui is all about balancing energy to create harmony, it makes sense that Haeco would extend that process to aviation. Called Xiao Yao, the 1,025-square-foot interior was designed for a Boeing Business Jet 2 and offers an open layout that allows for fluid movement throughout the cabin. Various seating areas line the sides while a meandering path winds down the center, mimicking a thin stream. Xiao Yao includes a master bedroom, dining room, lounge and plenty of nooks for enjoying tea and mahjong.

Haeco’s “East meets West” jet offers something much more modern, with bright pops of color and sharp geometric patterns. As the result of a collaboration with an international fashion brand (Haeco remains quiet as to which one), the design combines traditional eastern lattice patterns with a clean western cabin aesthetic. The hand-woven wallpaper, matte gold furnishings, bright teal and lime green furniture, and Art Deco-inspired carpet are easily visible. Oh yeah, and there’s also a sushi bar. KERRIN BLACK Talent Finders

Can you give us a brief background of your life in business and entrepreneurship? My journey in entrepreneurship started in 2005. I come from a family of entrepreneurs and worked in the family business so I had already learnt a fair amount. After freelancing for a film production company and watching the Oprah Show (a specific episode on entrepreneurship), I was truly inspired. I recall saying to my father that there must be something I could do after seeing the success of these young American entrepreneurs who had created massive success from start-up to becoming million dollar businesses. Having worked in the film industry I realised that there were challenges within the casting process for commercials. I sat down with my father and said, “What if we could create a online platform community for both the talents looking to promote themselves and those looking for talents, to connect through?â€? And thus, I had found my niche! Taking into account the challenges within production companies, I saw the gap to create an online talent community and so Talent Finders was born. I have always had a passion for entrepreneurship and I also wanted my own business. I really do believe that having an online business is the present and the future - as clichĂŠd as that sounds it is the truth. What is the core focus of Talent Finders? The core focus for Talent Finders is to connect, promote and educate talents. This applies to all talents and all those companies or individuals searching for talents. My priority focus is to create a global online empire to expose talents and provide jobs and media opportunities for all talents. 112 indulgememagazine.com

My focus is not to limit the website to a specific genre but leave room to expand and create scalability into all genres of entertainment talents. Can you give us a brief outline of the program? Talent Finders allows all talents, represented or freelance, to register though a simple process to showcase their abilities through a comprehensive profile on the website. This can be done using a number of cost-effective packages to provide contact with the market. The program provides the market looking for the talent with various profiles of talents in most entertainment genres, according to region and professional status. The program also allows the searcher, free of charge, to define the specific parameters, and thereafter choose the talent that best satisfies the requirements. Once this is done, the searcher can then register with Talent Finders where they will be given the relevant information needed to contact their chosen talent profile for a nominal annual charge. What was the inspiration behind the program? The biggest inspiration behind Talent Finders is being able to provide an online service to the global entertainment talent community. The goal is to be able to offer an affordable quality online service for well-established celebrity talents and less known talents to promote themselves, as well as a cost effective platform for the representatives of talent to market their clients. There are also many undiscovered talents that often do not know where to start marketing themselves. Knowing that I can provide a service that connects, promotes, educates and assists talents in getting jobs within an industry I am passionate about is inspiring in itself.

Who has been your biggest influence? My biggest influences are JT Foxx (business coach and serial entrepreneur), Elon Musk (Tesla), Erin Sawyer (formerly Erin Brooks - female Tesla engineer), Oprah Winfrey, Sara Blakeley (Spanx), Steve Jobs (Apple), Sir Richard Branson (Virgin) and Elizabeth Holmes (Theranos) all of whom have created amazing businesses with so little. Each one has inspired me in different ways and made me realise there is so much opportunity. I have and am learning what real leadership is - taking risks and understanding the importance of how each of these entrepreneurs are role models for me. Each one has pushed the boundaries and has showed me that you have to do whatever it takes with relentless persistence and never give up. Can you give us some success stories? Some of the success stories for Talent Finders have been: JT Foxx – (World #1 Wealth Coach, Serial entrepreneur and international business speaker.) featured in Fast Company, Maggs on Media and countless other publications. Repeated work for Kenny Maistry - (Radio DJ & Voice over artist) who landed a voice-over contract which led to three follow-on contracts with the same client. Gjermund Nesland - National Team Manager for the prestigious Norwegian Kickboxing team, featured in 2 international online blogs: Sportskeeda (International sports blog) Teeco71 (International US entertainment article) A top South African gymnast – featured in Glassfit commercial. These are just some of the successes where Talent Finders has been able to assist and show results. What are the advantages of using Talent Finders? Talent Finders has a large number of advantages which when combined offer the user a unique value proposition. Some of the main advantages are: * Easy to use and keep updated: Information can easily be registered and updated by the talent or the talent’s agent, and being an online service the information can be updated at any time at no cost. It is therefore easy for talents to always keep their information up to date. In addition, the renewal reminders are used to prompt information updates. * Eliminates middlemen: Unnecessary markups by middlemen acting as agencies often out-price talents who lose out on potential work opportunities. Talent Finders provides the direct communication link between the seeker and the agent/talent. This does not replace but complements the traditional casting system. The casting agents in the traditional system can also use the site to source talents. * Inexpensive and global: Talent Finders provides an inexpensive platform for unrepresented individual talents to promote themselves to a worldwide market. For talents with several skills Talent Finders provides exposure and multiple genre representation in a one-stop shop for convenience. Users searching the site are not charged and only require an Internet connection. * Broadly based: The user has a far wider choice of candidates, including those who are unrepresented and do not appear on any other agency sites. Users can also easily search for talents from all over the world. * Flexible and efficient: The mechanics of the database allows the user to vary requirements of the search. In comparison to the complex nine step existing casting process the search process can literally take minutes. What are the biggest obstacles you have faced? The biggest obstacle I have faced as an online business is to educate local talents on the significance of investing in themselves. One does not understand until you have travelled and taken yourself outside of your environment, specifically in the US, that the entertainment industry is a tough business. Talents in South Africa often wonder why they don’t

succeed internationally, the reason is that they do not treat what they do as a business and build a brand and master their craft. A big part of this is to invest in themselves through branding and marketing and overcoming the prevalent sense of entitlement. This is a big challenge and is what separates us from the rest of the world. Another challenge is to educate talent on the significance of being listed on a website like Talent Finders - that you need to be putting yourself out there and be strategic and not rely on one angle but look at multiple avenues of branding and marketing. Can you tell us about the other programs you are busy with at this time? I am busy with a number of other media projects and additional development to the Talent Finders website. I am involved in charity work as well and have my own charities both here and in the US. I am excited for 2016 and would like to say that this year is going to be epic. What have you done your way and how has it contributed to getting you where you are today? I have never been conventional! By this I mean I have never been the type of person who like to sit in an office. I chose the more challenging route as most entrepreneurs do. One of the biggest achievements, I would say, is having some amazing international talents listed on Talent Finders which is a huge honour and a credit to the business. I have done what few people have had the determination to do. I have sacrificed a huge amount. My experience in the film industry was invaluable. I assisted in a family business and worked a number of part time jobs all of which helped me to get to where I am today. Many I did for free to gain the necessary experience. Starting with very little, along with my father, I have contributed and built what I have today. I have personally sacrificed income for long periods of time. I have contributed my time and effort. ‘’Short term sacrifice for long term benefit’’- JT Foxx What is your advice to other female entrepreneurs? My advice to all female entrepreneurs and those who aspire to walk the entrepreneurial journey - be prepared for the huge sacrifices you will make. Know that this is not an easy road you choose and a very emotional journey. It will come with its highs and lows, but know this - you will have incredible and amazing moments that will be exhilarating and will make it all worthwhile. These are moments you will appreciate because you know what it took to get there. My advice is no matter how crazy people think you are, stay on your path! There will be times where you will ask yourself ‘what am I doing?’ but know that all of the greatest female entrepreneurs of our time are the ones who stayed the course to become who they are today. It is truly important to love what you do and don’t deviate. Any additional comments? I am not the traditional office-bound entrepreneur and like to know that I can work from wherever there is an internet connection. This gives me the freedom to work from whereever I want without limiting me to the confines of an office. I love the tech and online space, so to be able to connect talents from all over the world across all genres and to be able to work online is amazing. kerrinblack.com INDULGE | Holiday Edition 113

GJERMUND NESLAND Answers We Really Want to Know (when we encounter somebody this successful) You have undoubtedly been successful on so many different scales and platforms‌what is success to you? For me personally, success is about setting great goals and achieving what you set out to do, and being recognized for your efforts and results by others as well as yourself. Success also means to perform far better in something than most other people, for example in sports, music, art, politics, business or other high performance areas.

114 indulgememagazine.com

Success has several different aspects and can be measured in many different ways. Far too many people believe that success can only be counted in money and material goods. I believe that success is a very individual thing, and it is up to each person to define their own criteria for success. So even though I have my own criteria, I fully respect that other people may have quite different criteria for success.

At 15 you left home, did you already have a sense of the ambition and success you have achieved at this time? No, I can´t say I did. I came from a village where I grew up on a farm, and I had a simple and good life without high expectations from others. However, I have always wanted to perform well , such as at school, in sports, and in business. So my goals and ambitions have grown during the years as I have gained more experience and discovered more of the different possibilities and opportunities that exists in this great world we live in.

I have not had many pits but it was a tough period for me when the financial crisis struck in 2007-2008. At that time I was heavily involved in the real estate business, and my business partners and I were in a growth phase with lots of real estate we had acquired, but there was a lack of financial liquidity in our real estate companies. We had to work almost every evening and night for several months in addition to our daytime jobs, in order to save the companies. We managed to save them, but it cost us blood and sweat, and the profit was far less than it would have been without the crisis.

What is your spiritual practice? (Meaning, how do you keep yourself grounded or even relate to the world on a bigger scale) What inspires you? I do not have a specific belief or routine for spiritual practice, but I feel very connected to nature and the wilderness. So, visiting the farm I grew up on, to do some good old farm work, or hiking in the mountains and wilderness, to go fishing or hunting, is something that reminds me of my roots and keeps me grounded. Humans are the most developed species on Earth, and it is therefore also our responsibility to preserve and protect the Earth. So when I feel that I live in accordance with nature, I feel very grounded.

How do you enjoy life? -what is fun to you? :) I enjoy doing sports, both indoors and outdoors, or spend quality time with friends, going to the beach, to a cabin or go hiking. But I also enjoy just sitting alone on a sunny terrasse in summer, or in front of a log fire in winter, reading a good book. And I actully enjoy working. I enjoy using and developing my skills and competence futher, so as long as I feel that I am growing through my work, I also enjoy working.

I am inspired by good-hearted people doing good deeds. People who put others first or who put a lot of extra work and effort into tasks and projects that benefit others, and not just themselves. I am also inspired by people who overcome challenges against all odds, or achieve things other people never thought possible. Can you let us know what the peak and the pit of your career/journey thus far have been? I guess one important peak was when I was offered a position as a senior manager in MHWirth at the age of 34. MHWirth is the World´s second largest supplier of drilling technology and drilling equipment for the offshore oil industry. So this was a prestigious posisition where a Senior Vice President in the company decided to give me the opportunity, based on my personal character and ability to lead, rather than going with the safe choice of an older and more experienced person with engineering background and several years of experience in the drilling industry.

Love and career. Do they mix? How do you balance such? I really hope they mix. ☺ I believe it is about priorities, understanding and communication. There are things you need to prioritize and things you need to sacrifice, both in a relationship and in a career. But as long as it’s done with the understanding of your partner and you have an open and honest communication about it, I believe the odds are better for a successful mix. Are there bigger (life) questions that you may be asking yourself? (Answer this, ‘I would like to know…’) I would like to know what my life purpose is. I am not a religious person, so I am not neccesarily saying that a greater force has defined a purpose for me, but I believe that I have the will and capacity to do something great and good on this Earth, and I would like to get confirmation and certainty as to what that should be. Finding out what gives you a real feeling of fulfilment, and what also makes the world a better place, is perhaps something more people should strive to figure out. gjermundnesland.com talentfinders.com/profiles/view/203/gjermund_nesland

CRISS ANGEL Back with Awesome New Television Show 'Trick'd Up' By Markos Papadatos

W

orld renowned magician Criss Angel is back with his newest television show, "Trick'd Up" on the A&E network, and it is pretty badass.

It included cameos from many of his fellow magicians that perform with him in The Supernaturalists, as well as in his Mindfreak Live! shows. One of the most impressive tricks involved Angel locating a signed bill out of a hundred bills, which he was then able to stab it with a knife. It was great to see him perform some street magic with the assistance of some random people, during which he sat on a chair with a white cloth on him, then made himself disappear as they uncovered the cloth. He suddenly reappeared in a different, distant location, leaving his fans spellbound. Another standout was "Criss-Ka-Bob," where he was placed on a kabob stick in a restaurant, and balanced

himself on it, and was spun around by his magician friends, prior to the kabob stick impaling him in the stomach. One of the highlights of the show included Angel ripping UFC fighter Paige VanZant in two, among other remarkable demonstrations performed by the world's finest magician. The Verdict Criss Angel is able to sustain one's attention the entire time in his new television show Trick'D Up. He is always reinventing himself and keeping things fresh. His show is high-octane and extraordinary. It garners an A+ rating. Don't forget to check out Digital Journal's interview with Criss Angel Criss Angel about his new television show.

A RANDOM ACT OF FITNESS

T

By Gino Caccavale

hrough the years, the term “random act of kindness” has embodied the belief that a kind word, holding a door, giving someone a hot meal, or simply a smile when someone is sad, can for the moment brighten their day. Random means it can be anytime or anywhere, and the act usually happens between two strangers and is spontaneous. Kindness means it comes from the heart. Paying it forward can be as rewarding for the giver as it is for the receiver. If you extend the same philosophy into the health and wellness industry, the impact can be tremendous, affecting someone for a lifetime rather than just one fleeting moment. I’m often asked to help someone with an exercise in the gym, or with a meal plan, or with supplement planning. Instead of giving a quick answer I make time to demonstrate an exercise or explain the benefit of a particular supplement. Sometimes I’ll take out a pad and jot down an outline of a workout or meal plan. Recipients of my random acts have shown me that wrinkled piece of paper with an exercise or meal plan years later and said that it launched a new healthy lifestyle for them. As trainers, nutritionists or other fitness professionals, it is our calling and obligation to help others. The physician’s Hippocratic oath is “do no harm.” The fitness professional’s should be “prevent harm” - prevent obesity, osteoporosis, diabetes and promote healthy living. With years of knowledge and certifications it’s easy to make ourselves look and feel better, but our job and passion is to share our knowledge with our clients, friends, family, and yes even strangers. That’s where we all can play a part. A random act of fitness has the potential to help everyone around you live happier, healthier, and longer. 124 indulgememagazine.com

What is a random act of fitness? You don’t have to be a trainer or even a professional in the field to have the desire to help others around you. Everyone knows someone who wants to workout, but is hesitant or even embarrassed to visit a gym due to their body image or the anxieties that surround a new gym venture. Reach out and take them there one time and offer your help. It could be a class, short treadmill walk, anything to get them through the door. It could not make any impression at all, or it could change someone’s life, a risk worth taking. Take an elderly person for a brisk walk outside. Maybe you’re in the gym and you see someone struggling or doing a movement that could lead to injury. Approach politely and offer your advice. In my experience, most are receptive and thankful. The worst that could happen is they tell you to bug off; the best, you prevented an injury and educated someone. A random act of fitness doesn’t always have to be gym or fitness related. Helping a shopper pick out a healthier food option at the grocery store or holding an elderly

person’s bag or cart while descending down a subway or apartment stairs are small but helpful acts. Maybe you have a co-worker, family member or friend that needs support to quit smoking or lose weight. Let them know you’re there to support them in their fight. Sometimes just knowing someone believes in you can spark somebody’s belief in himself/herself. We often assume that people know the basics: skim not whole milk, 30 minutes of cardio 5 days per week, resistance training at least twice weekly, protein at every meal, no carbs after 3pm, hydrate, rest, and so on. You don’t have to be an expert to share what you have learned from a trainer, a book, the web or a class to make a difference. A random act of fitness is a seemingly simple act that helps someone have a healthier day, and just maybe, a healthier life.

CHATTING WITH HELEN MAROULIS Olympic Gold Medalist in Wrestlin By Markos Papadatos

2

016 Olympic gold medalist and wrestling champion Helen Maroulis chatted with me about her historic win at Rio de Janeiro, and she offered advice for wrestling hopefuls.

On August 18, she bested three-time defending Olympic gold medalist Saori Yoshida in the 53 kg division of Women's freestyle wrestling at Rio de Janeiro, thus making her the first American female wrestler to win first place in the sport. "That felt amazing. It was incredible and it was really surreal," Maroulis said, on her Olympic gold medal win. An equally monumental moment for Maroulis was hearing the national anthem at the medal ceremony. "That was one of the most incredible feelings in the entire world," she said. "I got very, very emotional." Last September, Maroulis won the gold medal in the World Wrestling Championships in Las Vegas, Nevada, in the Women's freestyle 55 kg category. "I had always worked hard, but winning the world championship was a confirmation that I was doing things right and I made the right decisions," she said. A Maryland native, Maroulis noted that she is motivated primarily by "glorifying God." While reflecting on the last three years, she admitted that she sees a "lot of growth, a lot of tears, a lot of changes but a lot of joy as well." "I really don't see what the medal looks like or being on the podium, it's really those certain quiet moments, the struggles and the practice," she said. "Also, the happy times such as travelling to places and the people that have loved me for who I was. I am really thankful that my life is a journey through the sport of wrestling, since that is what I love to do." The wrestling queen had nothing but the greatest remarks for former Olympic wrestlers Mark and Dave Schultz, both of which took home the gold medal in the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles. "The more that I studied into Dave's life, a lot of people had great things to say about 128 indulgememagazine.com

him, even many many years after his death. People don't talk about the wrestling moves that Dave did that were good, they really talk about how good of a person he was, and that was really powerful for me, since it's not about what you do on the mat, but what you do off the mat and who you are, and that's what people remember and that's what impacts people, and that was really inspiring for me," she said, and revealed that she did see the movie Foxcatcher, which was based on the Schultz brothers. In the little spare time that Maroulis has, she enjoys reading, going to the movies and hanging out with her family. Speaking of family, Maroulis is half-Greek, and her father was raised on a Greek island, Kalamos, and came to America at the age of 12. "I love going back to the island. I actually got back two nights ago," she said. While she is not perfectly fluent in the Greek language, she has made it her New Year's resolution to become fluent. "I love the GreekAmerican community. It's nice. My dad and I are going to eat some Greek food today, so that is always fun." For aspiring wrestlers, she said, "You definitely have to work hard, and you have to believe in yourself. You need to accept yourself for who you are, and to give it your all each time you step on the mat." Maroulis concluded our interview by defining the word success. "Success means achieving what you defined for yourself to be important. Success is not an end goal in itself, it's figuring out what you want to be successful in first," she said. "I knew that I would be happy with myself if I gave it my all, so in that sense I was successful, and I got a medal out of it, which is also awesome." CHATTING WITH OLYMPIAN SAM KENDRICKS Pole vault, U.S. Army

O

By Markos Papadatos

lympic bronze medalist pole vaulter Sam Kendricks chatted with me about his experience at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Jainero, his motivations, as well as his future plans. Kendricks is the epitome of good sportsmanship, grace and class in the track and field event of pole vaulting. "It has been a long journey," he admitted. "We have a saying in track and field that 'every medal is a gold medal.' It basically means you went to the Olympics and you did what you were supposed to do, and you achieved your goal. If you are a young athlete and you expect to win a gold medal, then you are really fooling yourself. You are not giving the credit to the other competitors that you should. I was really happy to come away with the bronze medal. I did my best in the competition. I could not be disappointed with a bronze medal at all, so I'm very happy with it." Kendricks had nothing but kind remarks for world record holder Renaud Lavillenie, who took home the silver medal in Rio. "Renaud and I have traveled together for the last couple of years, and I've always looked up to him as a jumper. He's a great host whenever I am in France," he said. The Oxford, Mississippi native's goal in life is to jump over the six meter vault on the shortest pole. "I jump on a carbon fiber pole, and I use the best material that is out there," he said. A very important role model in his life, is his father and coach, Scott Kendricks. "A coach's kid has to have an advantage. My father was my high school coach and he is actually coaching my little sister and my little brother right now. I was very small in junior high school, and I didn't have a spot on his high school track team, so he taught me an event that not many other people had the chance to learn well, which is the pole vault. It really gave me a niche on his high school team, and we learned the event together," Kendricks said.

When asked what motivates him every day, Kendricks responded, "As an athlete, and now as a soldier and civilian solider, I am always trying to find the next thing to excel at. If you are an athlete, it may be speed, endurance or focus. All these different aspects can come together to make you a much better competitor, and that's what drives me. I want to find that next area that's going to make me better a little bit, which will make the pole vault higher and be a better leader." In his personal life, he just celebrated his 24th birthday. "It has been a fun time here in my hometown in Mississippi. We really had a good time. It has been the first time I have been home in the last four years for my birthday," he said. His plans for the immediate future are to continue his duties with the U.S. Army, where he serves as a second lieutenant. "As a reservist, I have 14 weeks of training," he said. "After that, I go directly in the indoor season for next year. I am really training for that outdoor world championship. I am trying to ascend to the next level." While reflecting on the last three years, he shared that he sees "a lot of patience, and good people with good advice." For his supporters, he concluded, "Thank you. As an athlete and an American, we feed off of the good graces of those around us. It's because of good people that I was able to jump my best and attain that new height. It's not what they have given me, but what they have allowed me to achieve." He defined the word success as "not an endpoint, but as a journey." "Success is about finding the journey and not the end," he concluded. To learn more about Olympic bronze medalist Sam Kendricks, follow him on Twitter.
