VODKA’S NEW Standard

Publisher’s note

Such a fast pace summer it was indeed and happy to embrace what is ahead! What an exciting season as it started with our Fashion Couture Under the Stars, for our cover event showcasing boutiques carrying top designers clothing. Fashion... does it define us? Fashion is how we express ourselves and it’s our way to show the world who we are. People can dress up, dress down, wear jeans, dresses, or any type of clothing that allows them to share their individuality. It’s obvious what things are in and out of style, but the question is: does fashion define who we are as people? Today’s society is in love with brand names. Some people love brand names because it makes them feel better about themselves when they’re wearing it. That’s why it’s called retail therapy. So in essence the brands that define us, build the confidence we have when we wear certain styles. Like that pair of shoes or dress and it feels just right and the label sets it in place. We realize that fashion shouldn’t define us, but it does. Fashion is an ever growing industry and it gives us the opportunity to share who we are in a multitude of different ways. Fashion is important because it shows a level of self expression and style.

The fashion spectrum is in all colors, styles and shapes but we always enjoy the seasons to the fullest by dressing the part and feeling good of how we feel. As October begins, I am reminded how much I enjoy the layers of dressing in more of a fashion choice of clothing. I recently attended the always wonderful Fashion Week, as the city was at an all time hype. I witnessed the creativity of top designers bringing their imagination once again to new levels. On the cover is Angel Sanchez, with a style that we all would love to wear and Carolina Herrera showcased much pink in her Spring/Summer 2016 collection and that is a color I am a fan of. Speaking of pink, October brings much awareness, as it is Breast Cancer month, Domestic Violence, Lupus, and National Diabetes month, so be sure to remember those who are affected by these hardships and share your love and support. With the enjoyment of lighter clothing for the summer, the coolness of the season ahead, had to check back into that winter is around the corner! Well not too soon as there is much planning ahead for the festivities. Enjoy the season as it brings warmth into your homes and love to your heart. Remember each quarter INDULGE magazine will provide the readership in top notch style. Enjoy looking through our Fall edition!

T

hese are not your average lipsticks — each one is like a mini objet d’art, inspired by Babylonian architecture, Queen Nefertiti of Egypt, and the art deco movement as well as the label’s bags and shoes. What that looks like in reality is a gilded bullet case that doubles as a necklace when a satiny ribbon is threaded through, making it the most elegant multitasking product on the market. The 36-shade range launched in September. There are three distinct textures — Silky Satin, Velvet Matte, and Sheer Voile — all comprised of natural oils and seed butters to hydrate your pucker. Expect shades that vary from the brand’s iconic red sole color (Rouge Louboutin) to rosy nudes to vampy plums and poppy fuchsias. Let the frenzy ensue!

Best Kept

Secret By Jonathan D. Pigno

S

Yasmin Gaffar-Cusick

taten Island’s The Secret Garden Eco-Salon and Spa offers customers a glimpse of their true inner beauty by emphasizing outside transformation through the doorways of style and confidence.

Innovation – it is the consequence of change and a step towards reinvention. When Vivian Pisano opened the doors to Staten Island’s very first eco-friendly salon and beauty headquarters, introducing something new wasn’t her only mission. She wanted to be bold, fresh – envisioning a standout center for fashion founded on environmentally-conscious sentiments while retaining classic sensibilities. Thus, The Secret Garden was born, providing its clientele with unique and natural alternatives to fine cosmetic care and style consultation conveniently housed under one roof. As with any successful enterprise, it is an ensemble effort – priding itself upon community awareness and the exchange of big ideas between artists, stylists, and specialists alike. The Secret Garden boasts a diverse array of cosmetologists and experts practicing within a charming, yet lavish atmosphere. Providing a vast expanse of luxuries from skincare, nail care, lash art, and nearly everything in-between, Pisano’s celebrated boutique welcomes visitors to explore the metamorphic power of elegance by nourishing what really matters – their souls. Perhaps no one understands this quite like Yasmin Gaffar-Cusick, a seasoned and talented colorist who has now been a part of Pisano’s team for over five years. A graduate of numerous European cosmetology schools and once the boss of her own salon, Yasmin sought to wholly embrace her lauded reputation as a veteran and premiere beautician by pursuing what really mattered – her devotion to the craft. Leaving her own business behind, she happily joined The Secret Garden as both a

master colorist and beauty consultant after learning of the team’s initiative for environmentally-sound pampering. It was a decision near to her heart, as she always remained passionate about embracing an organic lifestyle. With the rare opportunity to merge beliefs with her profession, the choice became undoubtedly clear. Yasmin’s loyal clients excitedly followed her to her new home, as she continues to treat them with the same dedication and painstaking diligence that she always presents on their first meeting. Her secret is the individualized attention - learning each customer’s preferences and devising an exclusive look that takes into consideration all of her colleagues’ expertise and the person’s own distinct characteristics. You don’t have to take her word for it, as Yasmin’s long list of dedicated patrons will vouch for her commitment to moving forward and reassessing their image. There is no set look for this stylist, as she strives to reinvent each individual regardless of how long they have been seeking her exceptional skills. With a level of unparalleled enthusiasm and unwavering sincerity, Yasmin believes she has found her place at The Secret Garden for a one very particular reason - the ability to express her gifts in an encouraging setting. The entire staff knows that pleasant surroundings leads to happy work, and it is this responsibility that translates into a statement of profound potential amidst such a group of dynamic artists. It is their freedom that permits them to experiment, to collaborate and engage in various cosmetic feats while maintaining their personal voice and simply loving what they do. If this imperative is any indication of their outstanding service, rest assured, the caliber is most certainly extraordinary. Rise and Shine While cold temperatures make layering your clothing to elegant effect a challenge, the warmer months bear a layering quandary of their own. How to incorporate sunscreen into your morning beauty routine MOISTURIZE Cleansed and moisturized skin is always a must before sunscreen, Another factor to consider is weight: When layering products, try to keep them lightweight across the board or build from thinnest to heaviest. PROTECT Doubling up on your sun protection is never a bad idea. Besides the added protection, a separate sunscreen also covers areas that moisturizer sometimes neglects, like the ears, neck and dĂŠcolletage. PERFECT Exhibiting patience between your sunscreen and foundation pays off. As long as you give sunscreen enough time to settle in, most makeup will behave normally. Put on your sunscreen, then have a coffee and give it time to soak in before topping off with foundation.

ngel Sanchez launched his 2016 collection CAYENA, on September 15 for its fourth time in a row during NYFW. “With This collection I wanted to recreate a tropical garden, filled with light, dramatic shapes and of course a lot of color.“ It was inspired by the exuberant flower from the Caribbean: CAYENA- also known as Hibiscus, very popular in the tropical Islands. “My main purpose was to portray its vivacious form and its intense colors through dramatic pieces.” After doing numerous collections avoiding adornment, Angel Sanchez makes a strong comeback by using the details of the flower as the main element. “I used several unique techniques and materials: acrylic, plastic, leather and other rare fibers that make every piece exclusive.” The color palette is very bright and bold, He wasn’t afraid of using all types of greens, yellows, oranges and fuchsias. However he used white as a symbol of shining light from the Tropic. As the designer said; “Cayena it’s a very fresh, vivid and radiant collection.” In this collection the most important material was the silk gauze, perfect to create voluptuous and dramatic shapes. “I wanted to take several references from the traditional couture from the 50s, with an interpretation of being free and absolutely Caribbean, creating what I call a Tropical Couture.”

Carolina Herrera

stablishing a globally recognized style aesthetic, Carolina Herrera has resided at the helm of her eponymous label for over three decades. Proving with each new season that effortless elegance paired with modern refinement is always relevant and embraced. With the encouragement and endorsement of legendary Vogue editor Diana Vreeland, Carolina Herrera presented her first collection of women’s ready to wear at New York’s Metropolitan Club in 1981. The collection was an immediate success with luxury retailers and fashion press; and from there, her fashion house was born with the Carolina Herrera New York label. Opening her New York based atelier shortly after the inaugural show and cultivating a team trained in haute couture craftsmanship, Carolina Herrera aligned her name synonymously with the city and all things luxury. With wedding gowns often included in her ready to wear runway shows, Carolina Herrera introduced her bridal collection in 1987. From the beginning, the bridal collection is designed with the same style

vocabulary innate in the ready to wear. Carolina Herrera has become the destination for brides in search of femininity, a touch of romance and exceptional craftsmanship known to the atelier. Since the collection’s inception, Carolina Herrera has outfitted renowned brides such as Caroline Kennedy, Rachel Wood, Amy Smart and Kristen Stewart’s character Bella Swan in “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn”. Finding resonance on the runway, down the aisle and in the pages of global fashion magazines, Carolina Herrera soon found a new home on the red carpet, dressing stars both on the rise and Hollywood’s iconic set such as Oscar winner Renee Zellweger, Salma Hayek, Michelle Pfeiffer, Sandra Bullock, Tina Fey, Taylor Swift and Zhang Ziyi. With her ready to wear and bridal collections firmly in place, Carolina Herrera launched her first fragrance, Carolina Herrera Eau de Parfum in 1988. She has since released 13 additional fragrances for both men and women in collaboration with her daughter Carolina Herrera de Baez, the brand’s fragrance Creative Director. My life in six words... It has been a wonderful life My parents were... very special. My mother was a very romantic figure and my father was extremely good-looking, fun and a bit distant. The house I grew up in... I always remember my childhood house with happy memories. There was a beautiful garden, and outside my bedroom window was a jasmine vine which would open in the evenings, giving off a divine scent. When I was a child I wanted to be... a dog or a horse, depending on the day. If I could change one thing about myself... it would be my impatience. You wouldn’t know it but I’m very good at... cleaning. Whatever I spot, I clean: carpets, cushions. All of it; I love cleaning. You wouldn’t know it but I’m no good at... cooking. My chef does that.

I drive... I always go for Mercedes Benz. And I ride horses and have done since I was a young girl. When I was 20 I had the most fantastic Argentinian horse who was a very good jumper. I loved her. My house is... in New York. It’s a very cosy, very personal house. My favourite building... Either the magnificent St Paul’s, or the grandiose Castle Howard – the perfect house for England, no? My favourite work of art... The first painting that I realised I liked was ‘The Garden of Earthly Delights’ by Hieronymus Bosch, when I was six years old, at the Prado in Madrid. I still find myself returning there every time I’m in the city. A book that changed me... There isn’t a book that has changed me, but I have favourites such as ‘Pride and Prejudice’ which I often re-read.

At night I dream of... At night I sleep, and I dream during the day. I have lots of fantasies in my mind. I think people need room for that.

Movie heaven... I like old ones like ‘Death in Venice’ and new ones. Some films, like that ‘Avatar’, need to be seen on a big screen.

What I see when I look in the mirror... is someone I know very well. I rather like her.

My secret crush... I won’t tell you – because then it wouldn’t be a secret.

My favourite item of clothing... is always a very glamorous evening gown. The colour depends on the occasion. I rarely wear red but I had one in red that I kept coming back to because I had lots of fun every time I wore it. I wish I’d never worn... mourning attire at the funerals of people I’ve loved. It’s not fashionable but I like... eating milk chocolate.

My greatest regret... is not being an opera singer like Maria Callas. My real-life villain... Something I hate is cruelty to children or to animals. The person who really makes me laugh... is my husband. You will never forget a person who has a great sense of humour. What’s the point? The point of life is living it. My life in six words... It has been a wonderful life.

Scrumptious Apple Pie

Ingredients Pastry 2 cups Gold Medal™ all-purpose flour, 1 teaspoon salt, 2/3 cup plus 2 tablespoons shortening, 4 to 6 tablespoons cold water Filling 1/3 to 1/2 cup sugar, 1/4 cup Gold Medal™ all-purpose flour, 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon, 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg 1/8 teaspoon salt, 8 cups thinly sliced peeled tart apples (8 medium), 2 tablespoons butter or margarine Directions 1 In medium bowl, mix 2 cups flour and 1 teaspoon salt. Cut in shortening, using pastry blender (or pulling 2 table knives through ingredients in opposite directions), until particles are size of small peas. Sprinkle with cold water, 1 tablespoon at a time, tossing with fork until all flour is moistened and pastry almost cleans side of bowl (1 to 2 teaspoons more water can be added if necessary). 2 Gather pastry into a ball. Divide in half; shape into 2 flattened rounds on lightly floured surface. Wrap in plastic wrap; refrigerate about 45 minutes or until dough is firm and cold, yet pliable. This allows the shortening to become slightly firm, which helps make the baked pastry more flaky. If refrigerated longer, let pastry soften slightly before rolling. 3 Heat oven to 425°F. With floured rolling pin, roll one pastry round into round 2 inches larger than upside-down 9-inch glass pie plate. Fold pastry into fourths; place in pie plate. Unfold and ease into plate, pressing firmly against bottom and side. 4 In large bowl, mix sugar, 1/4 cup flour, the cinnamon, nutmeg and 1/8 teaspoon salt. Stir in apples until well mixed. Spoon into pastry-lined pie plate. Cut butter into small pieces; sprinkle over filling. Trim overhanging edge of pastry 1/2 inch from rim of plate. 5 Roll other round of pastry into 10-inch round. Fold into fourths and cut slits so steam can escape. Unfold top pastry over filling; trim overhanging edge 1 inch from rim of plate. Fold and roll top edge under lower edge, pressing on rim to seal; flute as desired. Cover edge with 2- to 3-inch strip of foil to prevent excessive browning. 6 Bake 40 to 50 minutes or until crust is brown and juice begins to bubble through slits in crust, removing foil for last 15 minutes of baking. Serve warm if desired.

Rhubarb Custard Pie

Ingredients 1 sheet refrigerated pie dough (from a 14.1-ounce package), 1 1/4 pounds rhubarb (about 6 medium stems), trimmed, halved lengthwise and cut into 1-inch pieces (about 4 1/2 cups), 3/4 cup granulated sugar, 1/2 teaspoon finely grated orange zest, preferably Valencia, 2 tablespoons orange juice, preferably Valencia, 2 large eggs 2/3 cup heavy cream, 1/4 cup all-purpose flour, Confectioners’ sugar, for serving Directions Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Fit the pie dough into a 9-inch pie plate, fluting the edges, and chill until set, about 15 minutes. Prick the bottom and sides with a fork, and then line the crust with aluminum foil. Fill with pie weights or dried beans and bake until the edges of the crust are just golden, 20 minutes. Remove the foil with the pie weights and continue to bake until the bottom of the crust is dry and lightly browned, another 10 to 15 minutes. Cool completely. Toss the rhubarb with 1/4 cup granulated sugar and the orange zest and juice until well combined. Transfer to the crust and spread to form an even layer. Place the pie on a rimmed baking sheet. Whisk the eggs with the cream, flour and remaining 1/2 cup granulated sugar until smooth, and then pour over the rhubarb. Bake until the pie is lightly browned, puffed and no longer wet in the center, about 1 hour 15 minutes. Cool completely on a wire rack. Before serving, lightly dust with confectioners’ sugar.

Pumpkin Pie

Ingredients Pumpkin: 1 medium sugar pumpkin (about 3 pounds), Canola oil, for oiling pumpkin Easy Pie Crust: 2 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for flouring, 1/4 teaspoon salt, 2/3 cup (11 tablespoons) cold unsalted butter, cut into 1/2-inch pieces Filling: One 14-ounce can sweetened condensed milk, 1/2 cup whipping cream, 2 tablespoons cornstarch, 2 tablespoons molasses, 2 tablespoons canola oil, 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon, 1 teaspoon ground ginger, 1/4 teaspoon salt, 3 large eggs Directions For the pumpkin: Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F. Remove the stem from the pumpkin and scrape out the insides, discarding the seeds. Cut the pumpkin in half and lay the pieces cut-side down on a rimmed baking sheet lined with aluminum foil. Rub canola oil all over the skin and bake until fork-tender, about 1 hour. Let cool. For the easy pie crust: While the pumpkin is cooking, make the crust. In a large bowl, combine the flour and salt. Add in the butter and work into the dough with a fork until the mixture is crumbly. Stir in just enough cold water (4 to 5 tablespoons) with a fork just until the flour is moistened. Divide the dough in half, shape each half into a ball and flatten slightly. Wrap one ball in plastic wrap and refrigerate for another use. Roll out the remaining dough ball on a lightly floured surface to a 12-inch round. Transfer to a 9-inch-diameter glass pie dish. Fold the overhangs under and crimp decoratively. Pierce the dough all over with a fork. Chill in the refrigerator for 15 minutes. Line the crust with foil, fill with dried beans or pie weights and bake until the sides are set, about 12 minutes. Remove the foil and beans. Reduce the oven temperature to 350 degrees F. For the filling: Scoop out the pulp from the roasted pumpkin and puree in a food processor until smooth (you should have about 4 cups). Add the condensed milk, cream, cornstarch, molasses, canola oil, cinnamon, ginger, salt and eggs and combine thoroughly. Pour the filling into the crust and bake until the filling is set in the center, about 1 hour. Transfer the pie to a rack and cool for 30 minutes. Serve at room temperature or chilled.

aviar and Champagne have long been considered a perfect gourmet match. The delicious salty taste of the caviar is beautifully enhanced by a dry Champagne.

Choosing a Caviar For the Traditionalist - A Russian Sturgeon Caviar such as Osetra Gold Caviar makes a beautiful pairing with fine champagne. Our black-sea farmed prized caviar is some of the very best golden Osetra caviar we have found worldwide. Delicious with Brut Champagne! For the Wise Connoisseur – Our Imperial Caviar not only brings ultimate taste and texture, but at a very cost effective price. This Caviar is bursting with sea flavors and complex briny notes. For the Value Lover – You cannot beat the very cost effective Wild American Hackleback Caviar. Strong in taste and light on your wallet – this is a great entry point into the world of Caviar and would not disappoint as a Caviar and Champagne pairing.

1990’s produced some excellent vintages. A vintage Krug or Taittinger Comtes de Champagne Blanc de Blancs (The 2000 and 2002 were both excellent) would make a great Caviar and Champagne pairing. For the Wise Connoisseur – There are many great non-vintage (NV) champagnes out there. Bollinger Special Cuvee is an excellent choice, or perhaps a Billecart Salmon. Consider looking for a grower champagne, Gosset NV Brut Grande Reserve is a great choice – grower champagnes are grown in the Champagne region of France but are produce by the same estate that owns the vineyards the grapes come from – usually offering great taste at a lower price point (You are paying more for the wine and less for the marketing!). For the Value Lover – Instead of French Champagne, consider a local, yet equally delicious, Champagne alternative such as the Italian Prosecco, Spanish Cava or a great sparkling wine from California. Whatever your choice – make sure that the Champagne is dry and not sweet!

Ricotta Gnocchi

Whip up this deliciously easy-to-make, savory gnocchi dish and pair it with Ruinart Blanc de Blancs for the ultimate holiday dinner. After all, nothing screams celebration like pasta and Champagne. Known for its vibrancy, freshness and elegance, this Blanc de Blancs features a bouquet reminiscent of Meyer lemons, ripe pineapple and fresh ginger that works wonders with the creaminess of the sauce. The Champagne’s intensity and generous mouthfeel complements the richness of the potato-based pasta better than most still wines. 2 cups packed whole-milk ricotta cheese 2 large eggs 1 cup freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese 1½ –2 cups all-purpose flour, as needed 3 tablespoons butter 1 cup fresh peas, blanched 1 cup chopped kale Kosher salt, to taste Freshly ground black pepper, to taste In a large bowl, combine the ricotta cheese, eggs and Parmigiano-Reggiano. Shape the dough into long ropes, about ½- to 1-inch thick. Cut into ½- to 1-inch pieces. In a pot filled with boiling, lightly salted water, drop gnocchi and cook until it floats. Remove immediately and drain in a colander.

Combine the kale, garlic, Parmesan, pine nuts, lemon juice and black pepper in a food processor and pulse until well combined. While the food processor is running, add olive oil a little bit at time. Process until well combined. Taste for seasoning.

Take your favorite movie-watching snack to a new level of elegance this holiday season. Top popcorn with truffle oil and pair it with top-rated Champagne. The delectable earthy notes in this popcorn recipe are complemented by the white stone fruit and brilliant mineral notes in Moët & Chandon’s Impérial Brut. bottomed stockpot, add the popcorn kernels and cover. As popping slows, shake pot to redistribute kernels. Remove from heat when popping has slowed significantly. Add the truffle oil to the melted butter and drizzle over the popcorn. Sprinkle with salt and grated cheese. Serve while hot.

1 medium cooking pumpkin, peeled, seeded and cut into 1-inch cubes 3 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil Salt and pepper to taste 7 tablespoons chives, minced (divided into 3 tbsp and 4 tbsp) 8 tablespoons softened butter, plus 3 tablespoons unsalted butter 1 large onion, diced 1 parsnip, diced 3 carrots, diced ½ teaspoon cumin ¼ teaspoon turmeric 4 cups vegetable stock ½ cups heavy cream 1 teaspoon black pepper, freshly ground Preheat oven to 375°F. Spread pumpkin cubes on a metal baking sheet and drizzle with the olive oil. Sprinkle with salt and pepper, and bake until tender, approximately 35-40

minutes. Let cool for 30 minutes. While the pumpkin roasts and cools, combine three tablespoons of minced chives with butter and black pepper. Using plastic wrap, roll into a log and refrigerate for 2 hours. When it’s firm, remove the log from the plastic wrap and slice into 8 equal rounds. In a large stockpot, melt the remaining butter and sauté the onion, parsnip and carrots until tender, about 7-9 minutes. Add the roasted pumpkin, cumin and turmeric, and continue to sauté for 5 additional minutes. Remove from heat and transfer to a food processor or blender in small batches. Process until all of the vegetables are puréed. Return the purée to the stockpot and add the vegetable stock. When it boils, about 15-20 minutes, reduce the heat and add the cream and cook for an additional 5 minutes. When the soup is done, divide it evenly among

Put away the Pinot Noir this Thanksgiving and pair this delicious Herbes de Provence Turkey dish with the elegant and sensual Veuve Clicquot Rosé. The rich raspberry and wild strawberry notes of this beautiful copper-hued Champagne pair perfectly with the turkey’s dried herbs and chopped rosemary flavors. Its exceptional balance and intensity also brings out all the succulent flavors of the game. 1 turkey, 12-14 pounds, cleaned and patted dry 8 tablespoons butter, softened 1 tablespoon coarse salt 4 tablespoons herbes de Provence, plus 1 teaspoon ½ teaspoon cayenne pepper ½ teaspoon dried chopped rosemary ½ tablespoon sea salt Preheat oven to 350°F. Place the turkey breast side down on a rack in a large roasting pan. Using your hands, mix the softened butter, coarse salt, herbes de Provence, cayenne and rosemary in a small bowl. Rub a small amount of the mixture on the underside of

the turkey, and then turn it over so the breast side is up. Working from the neck end, use your fingers or a small knife to loosen the skin covering the turkey breasts. Work the herb rub under the skin on each breast, being careful not to tear the skin. Using your hands evenly spread the remaining rub over the entire turkey. Combine the sea salt and remaining herbes de Provence and sprinkle over top of turkey. Cook in the oven for 4-5 hours, until a meat thermometer inserted in the thickest part of the thigh reaches 165°F. Allow the turkey to rest for 30 minutes, carve and serve. Serves 8.

Potato Pancakes topped with Butter Poached Lobster and Caviar Add a twist to the traditional holiday meal by serving a beautiful butter poached lobster on a simple yet elegant potato pancake, topped with caviar, and pair it with the prestigious Veuve Clicquot La Grande Dame 2004. This unconventional match is marvelously transformative. The crisp yet silky texture combined with the chalky mineral notes of this full-bodied bubbly stand up nicely to the rich, clean poached lobster and salty caviar. With each bite discover the depth of this complex wine as notes of white peach, apricot and nougat are brought to the forefront. It will leave your palate craving more. Fit your food processer with the grating wheel attachment and coarsely grate potatoes and onion. Transfer to a large glass-mixing bowl. Using your hands, squeeze out as much water as you can and discard the liquid. Add the egg, flour, salt and pepper, and toss with your hands until well combined. Pour 1 inch of oil into a large flat-bottomed frying pan and heat until very hot, approximately 360–370˚F. Using a large slotted spoon, spoon the potato mixture into the oil and fry until crisp, then turn over and fry the other side until crisp and brown. Only fry 3 or 4 pancakes at a time to keep the oil temperature hot, and feel free to add more oil as necessary. Remove pancakes to a paper towel lined plate and place in a 250˚F oven

to keep warm. Fill ¾ of a large stockpot with water and the remaining salt to boil. Add the lobster tails and cook for 5 minutes. Remove from the water and let cool in a large bowl filled with ice for 5 minutes. Using a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Cut the lobster tails in half lengthwise and place them meat side down in the melted butter. Poach for 5 minutes and then turn over and poach for an additional 2 minutes. Remove the pan from the heat and remove the lobster tail meat from the shell. Discard the shells and return the lobster meat to the pan to keep warm while you assemble the plate. Sicilian Olive Oil, Sea Salt Crackers Paired with Dom Pérignon Vintage 2004

Serve the flavors of Sicily at home this holiday season by whipping up these easy-to-make, scrumptious crackers—a snack made only more delicious when accompanied by Dom Pérignon’s 2004 Vintage. The Champagne’s astoundingly dense, yet weightless mouthfeel pairs delightfully well with the salty simplicity of the crackers. And to top it off, there’s a hint of powdered cocoa in the finish.

1½ cups whole-wheat flour 1½ cups semolina flour 1 teaspoon finely ground sea salt 1/3 cup Sicilian extra virgin olive oil, plus additional for rubbing 1 cup warm water 1 teaspoon coarsely ground sea salt Using a stand mixer, whisk together both flours and the finely ground sea salt for 1 minute. Change to the dough hook attachment and add the olive oil and warm water. Using medium speed, mix for approximately 6–8 minutes, or until you have a large ball of dough.

Divide the dough into 8 equal pieces. Rub each with the remaining olive oil and place on a plate. Cover with plastic wrap and let rest for 45–60 minutes. Preheat oven to 450˚F. Using a rolling pin, roll out one ball of dough to 1-inch thickness. Cut into 1-inch wide strips and transfer to a pizza stone or a metal baking pan lined with parchment paper. Sprinkle with coarse sea salt and bake until crisp and golden, approximately 5–7 minutes. Repeat with remaining balls of dough. Makes approximately 48 crackers.

Saffron Risotto

Paired with Dom Pérignon Rosé Vintage 2003 The delicate flavors of this exotic saffron and rice coupled with the saltiness of aged Parmesan make this risotto dish a magnificent match for Dom Pérignon’s Rosé Vintage 2003. The strawberry, raspberry and dark cherry flavors of this sparkler accentuate the creamy texture of the dish. The bubbly’s brilliant amber hue is also a stunning partner for the rich yellow aesthetic of the dish.

2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil, plus extra for serving 3½ ounces butter, plus extra 1¾ ounces shallots, chopped 12 ounces carnaroli rice (Acquarello brand, if possible) 1 cup white wine 6½ cups chicken stock, heated 2 strands saffron Salt, to taste 4 ounces grated Parmesan 120 1 cup frozen green peas, thawed Parmesan shavings, to top 4 sheets edible gold leaf (optional) In a sauté pan, heat olive oil. Add the butter

and chopped shallots and let cook. Add the unwashed rice and cook, stirring constantly. Do not allow rice and shallots to brown. Stir in the wine and cook until it’s fully absorbed. Next, add hot chicken stock and saffron, and cook for 15–20 minutes, stirring frequently. Add additional hot stock as necessary. After the first 7–10 minutes, season with sea salt. When the rice is cooked, remove from heat and mix in the grated Parmesan and some additional butter. Adjust the seasoning and divide among four plates. Drizzle with olive oil, sprinkle with Parmesan shavings and decorate with gold leaf, if desired. Serves 4.

Sliced Parmigiano-Reggiano

Paired with Krug NV Grande Cuvée Brut Sparkling Serving Parmigiano-Reggiano paired with Krug Grande Cuvée sets the perfect tone for your holiday soirée. It is simple and elegant, and a bit unexpected—and will inspire your guests to permanently substitute this exceptional Champagne for their predictable bottle of white. The green apple and toasted brioche notes nicely cut into the saltiness of the aged cheese, and the dried herb accents and effervescence on the finish surprise and satisfy the palate just in time for more.

In fact, at the turn of the century the term “supper club” was another name for a speakeasy. From the roaring 1920s on, many supper clubs began to pop up across the U.S., mostly in rural areas. But a supper club also refers to a dining establishment that simultaneously functions as a social club with like-minded individuals. In general, supper clubs tend to present themselves as having a more elegant image. Patrons dressed up and enjoyed a night out, dining and dancing, without

D

Meet the Maker:

aron Joffe of Farmer D Organics

aron Joffe was a freshman in college, eating a turkey sandwich, when he had an epiphany.

“I thought, where did this turkey sandwich come from?” he says. “I had never thought about it before. I’d never grown anything or known anybody who had. I thought, I need to learn how to grow a turkey sandwich.”

These days Joffe — better known by his nickname, Farmer D — isn’t just growing sandwich ingredients. He’s empowering others to understand where their food comes from through his company Farmer D Organics. Joffe was born in South Africa and raised in Atlanta, but it was his experiences in college, at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, that paved the way for his career in farming and gardening. There, he studied at the Michael Fields Institute Biodynamic Learning Center, attending workshops and working on an organic farm, learning about growing healthy food with intention. He also started paying attention to major issues in today’s agriculture: the loss of the small family farm and industrialized farming using chemicals and pesticides, to name a couple. “That turkey sandwich went over 3,000 miles to get to my plate, burning a huge trail of fossil fuels, and there were chemicals and preservatives on the tomatoes and bread your body doesn’t want to digest,” he says. “Also, we’re spending money outside of the local community when we could be supporting the local economy.” He went home to Atlanta his freshman year to tell his parents he was leaving school to pursue a career in organic farming, and it was his mom 98 indulgememagazine.com

who came up with his new moniker. “She said, ‘OK, Farmer D,’ as a joke, but she and my friends kept calling me that, and it became my name.” What followed were three apprenticeships, the purchase of a farm in southwest Wisconsin and a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture). Joffe also held school field trips for kids on the farm. He brought the farm into downtown Madison with his food truck — a falafel cart — using produce he’d grown and trying to interest people in what he was doing. He set up gardens in day cares, summer camps and other urban settings, ultimately starting a nonprofit organization, “Gan Chaim,” meaning “garden of life.” “Going to summer camp helped me get excited about nature,” says Joffe. “The one thing missing was good food. I thought, how cool would it be if I brought a garden and farm to summer camps, teaching kids to grow their own food? When a child is in a garden and picks something they’ve grown, they have a completely different relationship with food than they would in a restaurant. It fosters healthy eating habits and a spiritual connection to nature — a primitive, rich experience I wanted to share with people.” Joffe focus is in growing and harvesting vegetables: tomatoes, squash, peppers and zucchinis, along with herbs (he’s partial to oregano). “People get intimidated by starting things from seed, but once you start you realize how quick, easy and cheap it is,” he says. “You make a little hole, add the seeds, nurture it every day, and when it grows up it becomes strong and resilient and independent. In 25 days you can have a mature arugula plant. It’s amazing.” And the most important tool, according Joffe, is your hands. “That’s one of the beauties of raised bed gardening: you can do it all with your hands.” A digging fork, a trowel and a stirrup hoe can make the job a little easier, he adds. “The most rewarding aspect of my job are the responses I get from people who have had success in their projects, whether it’s a backyard garden or a farm or community garden,” he says. “Healthy food grows healthy people. When that connection is made, it brings people together and inspires them.”

Belize knows that size doesn’t matter. The tallest building is in Caracol and, at 137 feet, it is appropriately called El Caana (“Sky Place”). You can climb to the top and see for miles over the rainforest canopies.

About 900 Mayan ruins are scattered throughout the Belizean landscape, places where the ancient Maya lived, and built impressive structures to house their elite and worship. Some of these ruins are over 1500 years old, and many still lie undiscovered beneath the forest floor. 112 indulgememagazine.com

2. 42% of Belize’s land is protected Belize has 95 protected areas, including terrestrial and marine national parks, national monuments, wildlife sanctuaries, archaeological reserves, nature reserves and private conservation areas. In the country’s three nature reserves, there is no access without a permit, and only researchers can enter. To throw in a couple more interesting facts about Belize, over half of the country is rainforest, home to 540 species of birds, and also contains the only jaguar preserve in the world, the Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary. With so much to treasure, is it any wonder that the people of Belize want to protect their wildlife.

3. There are 3 times more tourists each year than the national population With a population of about 313,000 people, the country receives nearly 1 million tourists every year. Tourism is Belize’s largest source of revenue, and one in four residents of the country is involved in the industry. Belize’s low population density, combined with its abundance of natural wonders, means that many more tourists visit the country each year than there are national residents. 4. Only 10% of Belize’s barrier reef species have been discovered At 185 miles, the Belize barrier reef is the largest in the Western hemisphere. It is currently known to house over 500 species of fish. However, marine biologists estimate that only 10% of barrier reef species have been discovered. With 90% still a mystery, there could be all kinds of weird and wonderful creatures out there. 5. Belize has no Starbucks, McDonalds, Burger King, or KFC The last of our interesting facts about Belize is that it lacks the franchises many people take for granted. Most of Belize’s tourists are American, and used to an abundance of fast food chains wherever they go. Many of them are surprised to find none of the staples they are accustomed to in Belize. Instead, Belize’s cultural diversity means there is a plethora of delicious dishes to try, from Mestizo panades (a fried corn patty) to Garifuna cassava bread. The most interesting things about Belize are best experienced first hand, and there are more exciting things to discover than can be written here. hen building a home of this magnitude, home decor is time consuming but a great experience and worth it, says Kiran homeowner of this fabulous home.

Kiran shares her experience with her style in decorating her home: In her search to decorate, she met up with Fendi to Georgio Armani Casa to all the designers in D&D building; the biggest designer power house in NY - I liked them all and was confused as to who to hire, they’re all so good and their furniture was gorgeous! But there was a waiting list for months since these designers are so busy. I love fashion and have an eye for interiors so I thought why not decorate my house myself. Since it was my own house I thought of taking the risk and put things together. I hired a designer to hand paint the ceilings to match the marble floor in the kitchen and around the skyline in the lounge - the furniture was all made to order from different stores in the city most of the stuff was from Safaviah and Arhaus. Some pieces were from West Elm like the cushions on the sofa’s to match the

marble ceiling and the lights. The paintings were from different art galleries again made to order. Some were from Safaviah. Carpets were from Macy’s since they offer a huge collection of rugs and carpets. The idea was to give it a cozy and warm environment, that’s why not too much color was used. Kept it simple and elegant hence utilizing gold and white with a pop of red in the carpet. The vases under the staircase just added a homely feeling since I love plants I thought it would be a great idea to have two inside. The dining furniture was also made to order. The 12 seater cloth was selected to match the painting on the ceiling and the green in the marble on the floor. Marble was imported which took two years. The ceiling and wood work was hand made design and moldings. Wood work never goes out of fashion or style hence there’s plenty of wood work inside to accent.

Rezist is the answer to a frequently posed question and common problem when it comes to working out. Should I do cardiovascular exercise for caloric burn and heart health or should I do resistance training for strong muscles and bones, since I probably don’t have time for both. Most classes today are geared for the cardio lovers who feel if they had to choose, the sweat and movement of cardio and calisthenics classes would be most beneficial. Therefore, they totally neglect overloading the muscles so they can build a lean strong physique. What if you didn’t have to choose? What if there was one workout that gives you that cardio burn, and at the same time overload your muscles to spurt growth and shape? Now there is! Celebrity Trainer Gino Caccavale, who has trained Carmen Electra, the WWE Bella Twins and many more, has created a workout that will engage every muscle, every joint, while burning fat and calories through its constant succession of timed multi joint exercises; it’s called REZIST. Revitalize Aging Multifunctional Vitamin

W

By Antonio Sciortino, CFO & Head Chemist at Atmosphere Essentials

hile vitamin C is an important nutrient for overall health, little reaches the skin when orally ingested. As levels of vitamin C in the skin decline with age, replenishing levels directly in the skin can help combat collagen degradation and oxidative stress. Results from clinical trials show that when applied topically, vitamin C promotes collagen formation and mitigates the effects of free radicals, helping to maintain firm and youthful skin. Vitamin C is not only necessary for collagen production and maintenance, but it is also a potent antioxidant that can neutralize free radicals in the skin. Free radicals are atoms or molecules with an unpaired electron. They are very chemically reactive and short-lived. Because of this, their destructive power is limited to the place where they are created, which is mostly in the cells’ mitochondria. Other benefits: Effective and stable skin brightening agent Balanced skin tone Photo-aging prevention and reduced dark spots Increased collagen synthesis Excellent anti-oxidation properties Niacin amide (Vitamin B3) is introduced to the serum to enhance the following benefits: Improves skin's elasticity with anti-wrinkle properties Enhances barrier function preventing skin from losing water content Helps discoloration and uneven skin tone Stimulates microcirculation in the dermis Hyaluronic Acid (HA), naturally found in the body, secures moisture and creates fullness—youthful skin by improving its moisture content. Has a slight plumping effect to even wrinkles Necessary element for maintaining youthful skin

Improves collagen production Brightens skin tone, reducing dullness Fruit acids derived from grapes, apples, lemons, oranges and sugar cane act as a natural Alpha Hydroxy Acid. It helps: Stimulate both elastic and collagen production Improve appearance of photo damaged skin Performs as a mild defoliant and peel (unlike glycolic or salicylic acid) Good for sensitive skin. Not only is vitamin C a great natural moisturizer, it also enhances the protective barrier function of the skin. This means your skin can retain more water so it stays smoother and younger-looking for a much longer period of time. Topically applied vitamin C can be used in conjunction with your normal skin care program to improve the brightness, tone, and texture of your skin. Applying vitamin C to the skin daily can do wonders for keeping one’s youthful appearance for life. A lightweight vitamin C serum that aids cellular reconstruction and renewal is perfect for all skin types and can rejuvenate and protect environmentally damaged or stressed skin. The benefits of vitamin C serum are complemented by a special blend of concentrated tea extracts that offer additional antioxidant protection for the skin against free radical damage. For optimal results, gently massage a topical vitamin C serum with concentrated tea extracts into the target area twice daily or as needed.

Do you Detox?

Y

By Barbara Strafella

ou aren’t on any special program, you are definitely not drinking a lemon, cayenne and syrup mixture and you are not by any means starving yourself with a liquid diet so you are not detoxing or are you?

Do you drink water, eat vegetables and fruit, sleep and urinate each day? Are you surprised to learn that you are unconsciously detoxing? Most of us are not aware of the power our organs have to clean our body. With each bite of the delicious veggies and fruits you consume you are delivering a mouthful of antioxidants and phytonutrients to your organs to start the daily cleaning process. So what are antioxidants and phytonutrients? Antioxidants are the organic substances or enzymes that counteract the damaging effects of oxidation in animal tissue and phytonutrients are the powerful bioactive chemical compounds found in plants as antioxidants that are beneficial to humans.

chemotherapy, radiation, sugar, environmental toxins and metals all create an perfect environment for free radicals to attack our body. Forced or controlled detoxification begins with a weaning of meats, poultry, fish, carbohydrates, sugar, alcohol and tobacco, followed by a cleansing process via a liquid diet and then a reintroduction of healthy foods. The detoxification process allows your organs to take a break from processing the foods that put added stress on our purification system. The much needed rest for our organs allows them to destress and take a break from the daily pressures needed to purify us. A bonus of a controlled detoxification usually results in weight loss. Many mistake this weight loss as a permanent measure, it is not. Detoxification removes toxins from our bodies, not fat. The weight loss is made up of the water that carries out the toxins and sludge that are trapped in our organs.

Mother Nature’s detoxing program is easily accessible from your garden, fruit & vegetable stand, farm to table program or pesticide free veggies and fruits from your local grocer. Consuming 3-5 servings daily of both fruits and vegetables keeps your natural detoxification system healthy.

Please contact me for your complimentary consultation. Together we can create your personalized detoxification plan that suits your body.

In cases where there is a cause for extreme detoxification a controlled fast is needed to eliminate the bad waste that is trapped leaving our organs in a sluggish state. Stress, chemical dependency, alcohol, tobacco,

I

Listen to your Gut By Nicole Scarangello, M.S.

most recently had an early morning cup of coffee with my dad, and during our chat, we began speaking about probiotics. He was spending a decent amount of money on a daily probiotic, and wasn’t sure if it was providing him with any health benefits within the gut. My father was diagnosed with a sluggish thyroid a few years back; he was put on medication and hasn’t been able to lose the stubborn ten pounds around his midsection even though he is in excellent overall health. He thought that maybe if he began taking probiotics, it would help him lose the excess weight. However, without the proper understanding of what the probiotic was doing, he couldn’t visualize it helping him lose the weight. It then dawned on me that my dad wasn’t alone in this need for clarification regarding the gut microbiome; and how it’s possible to stay healthy and possibly lose weight, while achieving overall homeostasis through a wellmaintained gut. Research has shown that our gut has over a trillion different bacteria that are producing essential vitamins and hormones. The gut can affect everything from battling the common cold, to feeling happy, along with the speeding up and slowing down of our metabolism. Diabetes, depression, and obesity are all impacted by the health of our gut flora, since it totally communicates with the central nervous system by chemicals and hormones produced from within. Listed below are highlights and actions that we can all take to keep our gut healthy. Stress When our bodies and minds are highly stressed out; levels of gut serotonin (hormones associated with our state of well-being) are thought to be completely disturbed. This balance of our good and bad bacteria within the gut gets off track and we may feel “sick to our stomachs”, during those highly stressful periods of our life. Doctors believe that regulating stress with 30 minutes of daily physical activity, yoga, meditation and/or deep breathing, helps us focus on our own unique “happy place”. This will allow you to benefit from the good gut bacteria that are produced within our bodies. The Great Outdoors Experts now know that the good and also necessary bad bacteria are what the gut needs for homeostasis. These bacteria live in the air and dirt outdoors. You can coincide with reducing your stress levels by doing some peaceful gardening, taking a 30 minute brisk walk, or practicing a daily meditation at the beach. The point is, “get outside!” Medications Antibiotics, which are mostly known for fighting illnesses and helping us keep our health, are also known for having a hard time distinguishing

134 indulgememagazine.com

between good or bad bacteria. Antibiotics do not discriminate, with this said they kill all bacteria (good and bad). Unfortunately, this offsets our gut flora; which can leave you vulnerable to gastrointestinal complications. Do not be so quick to go on an antibiotic if it’s not completely necessary. Consult your doctor or physician to see if it’s okay to hold off somedays; let your body do its part and fight off the illness on its own when possible. Probiotics and Prebiotics Probiotic’s are the helpful bacteria for the gut. They are live bacteria that promote the growth of beneficial gut flora, which in turn can produce chemicals and hormones needed for the body to stay all around healthy. Foods that are good for the gut include: yogurts, tempeh (soy product), miso, ginger beer, and kombucha (a type of tea). Many opt for the probiotic supplement, which is not a bad idea. Any mid-priced supplement should suffice for quality. Prebiotics pass through the stomach and small intestine, and then end up in the large intestine stimulating growth of healthy bacteria. Think of high fiber foods such as: chicory, asparagus, onions, garlic, and dandelion greens. You need a mixture of both probiotic and prebiotic for a healthy gut! Gut Friendly Diet Disease fighting foods that are high in fiber are great for digestion, these include: citrus fruit, fiber-rich fruits such as pears and apples, along with leafy greens and yellow vegetables. To flatten the tummy, consume moderate amounts of avocado, brown rice, dark chocolate, nuts, oatmeal, olive oil, seeds, and drink an adequate amount of green tea. Avoid processed foods, as they can lead to gut inflammation and possible feelings of bloating. We all know how the sensation of an upset stomach can transcend over the entire mind and body. Doing everything we can to make sure that we are taking care of our gut will not only be proactive, but it will ensure overall good health. These little “healthy tips” play a major influence on our present moods and over all state of wellness. So listen to that gut and treat it with care.

But the burning question is why not morning walk after all it’s the healthiest walk one can ever walk in the free of cost which not only freshens or stretches you mind but also your soul. It is an energetic mind and body development which creates a sense of pace. Being one of the easiest ways of exercise morning walk has been neglected by the several people which including educated people. We often encounter people spending money for the gym and aerobics making Morning walk one of the most ignored and abandoned form of exercise.

Morning Walk the simplest form of exercise that works as the remedy for the tension if done in the tranquil and serene neighboring like parks or country road. I know that the fact that it sucks to get up early in the morning for your office, school without having to go for the walk too. But if we for once keep our laziness aside and began morning walk every day our body and mind can thank us in million ways. Henry David Thoreau once said that An early morning walk is the blessing for the whole day. And it proves to be really true. Even a leisurely stroll or small but rapid walk in the morning provides you with the natural vigor boost and you end up feeling rejuvenated. One also feels more active and energetic throughout the day. Morning walk can’t be ignored because we can’t forget the fact that physical exercise in the before time morning supplies you greater mental sharpness throughout the day.

The third benefit of the morning walk is it enhances mental power. Morning walk guarantees that you stay attentive all over the day. It not only benefits your body but also your mind by providing greater amount of oxygen as walking progresses blood transmission.

The second yet important advantage of Morning Walk is Lessen Tension. While I have already mentioned earlier that morning walk is not only beneficial in the morning but it is also helpful for minds. More than half of World population has lot of stress and morning walk reduces this stress providing an optimistic attitude for the whole day.

The fourth advantage of Morning Walk is it helps to get rid of Diabetes and Hypertension. In present day to find one diabetic patients in the each home has been common. If one sincerely takes an early walk in morning they can prevent themselves from being diabetic patients. And walking lessens elevated blood pressure by civilizing blood flow in the body. To keep these two diseases away I suggest walk away.

“Morning Walk is the Healthy Walk.” There are number of fact to prove this statement. The regular performer of this exercise form will support my statement from their heart. And for others I am here to describe the benefit of Morning walk. And even if this doesn’t motivate you into waking up early for walk, I am unaware about what will.

The fifth advantage of Morning walk is it helps in the Weight Loss. In the today’s world of science and technology the world has become a very small place. People can get easily what they want or where they want to reach. Car, telephone, mobile, internet has helped the people in different ways. But same means are creating the overweight or obese in the people. Sop morning walk can be the effective weapon to fight against these diseases.

The first and foremost advantage of walking in the early morning is it provides you with the cardiovascular fitness. The health payback of taking

Therefore Morning walk is the easiest way to keep oneself healthy. Only we need to do is keep our laziness aside and say let’s go for it.

contemporary smartphones were becoming outdated in relation to the ebb and flow of modern life. Phones should be wearable, and beautifully imagined. We introduced The Ruby Collection in February 2015 with the hope that it would redefine how people communicate and reimagine the use of precious metals and gemstones in mobile design. A signature accessory ties the pieces of any outfit together while defining the aesthetic of the artist. I had the ambition that The Ruby Collection would become such a signature, and it has become my ode to Modernist architecture. I wanted to design something that looked forward and backward – timeless yet new. When designing Ruby, I gathered inspiration from a variety of sources, but kept returning to the idea of how a butterfly would look resting on the side of the Broad Museum on the campus of Michigan State University. Next year, you will see this butterfly emerge from its chrysalis in four distinct styles: Berlin (platinum with slate crystal), Paris (gold with mimosa crystal), Sydney (rose gold with rose quartz gem) and Chicago (rose gold with black diamond gem).

J ay Strongwater

I

n 2015 Jay Strongwater proudly celebrates our 20th year with a collection of five iconic designs, each in a limited edition of 20. You could almost say this collection has been 20 years in the making, as each piece encompasses all of the craftsmanship, superlative materials, and dazzling beauty we are so passionate about.

“My lifelong passion for creating with my hands was nurtured by my parents at a very young age, and is my guiding principle today. I wanted each of these creations to showcase my enthusiasm for beautiful designs paired with handmade craftsmanship. I am very grateful to be joined in this effort by an extraordinary team of artisans, whose talents and dedication shine every day ... In our fast-paced world, how often do we have the occasion to experience and hold something truly special and unique? Limiting this edition to twenty has allowed me to articulate a level of ornamentation we might not normally have been able to accomplish. At heart, I am just an old-fashioned romantic who loves nothing more than a very personal expression from me to you.” In addition to the five limited-edition designs, 20th anniversary editions of our Patricia Frame (based on Jay’s very first frame) and a new Glass Ornament with Stand also commemorate this momentous occasion. Each features impeccable craftsmanship paired with sparkling hand-set crystals from Swarovski® in opulent colors, and is inscribed with “Jay Strongwater 2015 | Celebrating 20 Years of Fabulousness!”

The anniversary collection:

Glass Ornament & Stand - Jewel The celebration continues with an extraordinary holiday ornament. Mouth-blown transparent ruby glass, hand-painted with golden crystal leaves and flowers, and adorned with pearl butterflies. Presented on the matching ruby stand in a celebratory box. Oldworld craftsmanship from Poland. Inscribed with “Jay Strongwater 2015 | Celebrating 20 Years of Fabulousness!”

Our 20th Anniversary Nouveau Frame honors our tradition of beautiful frames with romantic art nouveau scrolls tightly pavéd in Swarovski® jet crystals, woven with soft blossoms in white opalcolor and gold aurum crystals. Finished in 14-karat gold and set with more than 2,000 crystals, with a brilliant ruby butterfly fluttering above. Crafted of pewter poured and finished in Rhode Island, and enameled and hand-set with crystals in the Jay Strongwater New York workshop.

The exotic never fails to captivate our imagination with alluring silhouettes and striking colors. Our solid brass fish has gently rippling fins and pierced scales. Hand-painted in sheer enamels in ombré tones of gray moonstone, pearl, and gold, and shimmering with more than 13,000 Swarovski® crystals in black diamond, opal, jet, and gold aurum hues. The brass is poured in India, then enameled and hand-set with crystals in the Jay Strongwater New York workshop.

Extraordinary. Our Golden Peacock Figurine glorifies everything we find inspiring about peacocks—their languid grace, sophistication, and glorious colors—in the largest figurine we have ever carved in metal. We centered each feather with oversized Swarovski® pear, oval, and marquis-cut stones and surrounded them with more than 13,000 brilliant, sparkling crystals in shades of light topaz, opal, and gold aurum. History, Heritage, and Harvest Autumn on Staten Island

A

By Jonathan D. Pigno

s a season of vibrant changes, fall on Staten Island stands as a yearly reminder of our rich historical heritage and agricultural beginnings. The seeds of decades past continue to bring us opportunities for enjoyment and bolstered communal strength, yielding a diverse harvest of activities tied to some of our most esteemed landmarks. These abundant traditions, both old and new, have paved the way for residents (and visitors alike) to appreciate the wide variety of enriching sights and sounds offered by what is arguably autumn’s most beautiful borough. Much is owed to the land in which we call home and occupy daily, bound lovingly to its surplus of parks and unique geographical setting. Comprised of natural landscapes set amidst a delicate mix of urban richness and suburban charm, Staten Island continues to instill its inhabitants with a steady sense of progress while maintaining its time-honored appeal. Also known as the “Borough of Parks,” Staten Island has been consistently praised for its opulent natural setting and diverse spectrum of wildlife. As such, it should come as little surprise that outdoors enthusiasts looking to bask in the splendor of Mother Nature frequently flock to the island’s numerous hotspots for a variety of activities. Throughout the summer and spring months, residents and tourists often find themselves seeking these destinations for a morning hike, afternoon picnic, or maybe even a casual stroll along the coast. These simple and familiar exercises routinely help people clear their heads and even reconnect with the beauty of the surrounding world. Now, with fall in our midst (and the inviting breeze of

146 indulgememagazine.com

cooler weather), there is no better time to begin experiencing the multitude of green sanctuaries sprinkled throughout our region. Geographically, Staten Island is ripe for both cultural and environmental diversity. Our unique position as an island situated between two bustling states (and within a major city), offers benefits that speak not only to historical significance, but continued legacies through our inherent bearings as well. With access to extensive and large-scale waterways, the island has been exposed to geological and topographical influence at integral locales. Many of the parks that welcome visitors often doubled as ports, key institutions, or other vital establishments that saw extensive amounts of human settlement (as well as an influx of sea-induced climate changes). These locations fluctuated vigorously with the seasons, and as such, many of the lingering advantages to appreciating their charm are reliant upon a visit during peak occasions. For example, an autumn day might illustrate or emphasize the variety of plants or foliage that normally might blend in on a summer excursion. Unsurprisingly, our culture is equally as prodigious. Scattered along the thoroughfares of colorful houses and storefronts is a treasure trove of customs and regional pride, overwhelming in their convictions but never old-fashioned. Look between the lines, and you can see yesterday teeming up through the cracks – a legacy set between bricks, revealing itself to all those willing to catch a glimpse of what foundations created some of the finest communities in the state. It is this compilation of businesses, neighborhoods, and beloved monuments that has established Staten

Island as a focal point in New York City’s impressive list of destinations sure to please anyone seeking a slice of city lifestyle with a touch of small-town comforts. Those looking for a truly festive experience should start with the often-cited and truly noteworthy Conference House. Located on the island’s South Shore, this outdoor park and accompanying museum provides guests with the opportunity to relive Revolutionary War history, as well as attend frequently scheduled gatherings and themed events. Situated in Tottenville, The Conference House is also in close proximity to the quaint shops and restaurants located on Main Street. These boutiques, fixed against a cozy and residential backdrop, are perfect way to either begin or end an excursion. Similarly, Historic Richmond Town presents visitors with its sprawling, shady grounds and an impressive array of authentic structures dating back to the 1600s. Travelers wanting an educational and seasonal delight should look no further, as visitors can relish in numerous festivals and celebrations in the heart of true Staten Island history, with access to exhibits and programs of all kinds. The fun continues yearround, as entertainment ranging from concerts to film-screenings are consistently booked to coincide with holiday cheer and the coming of warmer weather. For anyone seeking a little less adventure, fall is the perfect occasion to cherish whatever nature’s bounty has generously bestowed. Farmer’s markets have become a weekend staple on the island, and are now popular among residents as a fantastic means of acquiring fresh produce while supporting local farming initiatives or enterprises. Many of these retailers feature assorted fruits, vegetables, and even meat/specialty products gathered from many corners of the Tristate area. Though items can vary by week, the changing stock encourage buyers to sample quality foods that are premium both in taste and environmental sustainability. Various outlets and favorite spots include The St. George Greenmarket, Staten Island Mall Greenmarket, and nearby Decker Farm – associated with Historic Richmond Town and an integral part of their continued preservation of significant Staten Island landmarks. With so much to explore (and a distinct trail of history wherever you go), it is evident that Staten Island stands out as the premiere haven in New York City for fall-related recreation and excitement. Its ample legacies and copious amounts of mingling cultures have forged a noble amalgam of old-world spirit and modern awareness, attainable in its mission to shape ideal surroundings for its strong and satisfied residents. With a commitment toward responsible growth and a welcoming atmosphere to all those who take part, tourists and natives alike can be rest assured that this beloved sanctuary in the heart of city will prosper for years to come. Embrace the heritage and plan your trip today. The Stirn Mansion Rebirth To Casa Belvedere

T

his neo-Renaissance, Italianate style magnificent mansion is an excellent example of early 20th-century country house design, one of the few remaining of its kind on Staten Island. Often described as “Gatsby like”, this sprawling estate is truly a gem with ornate, ionic columns, arched windows, arts and crafts detailing, decorative iron railings, Tiffany stained glass motifs, a terracotta clay tile roof, front and rear porticos, decorative finials and borders and more. It was built in 1908 as the country home of Louis Stirn and Laura Roebling-Stirn. Louis Stirn was born in a suburb of Franfurt, Germany and the son of a Lutheran clergyman and his devoted wife. At the age of 14, Louis Stirn left Germany for New York and later went on to became a silk merchant distributing silks, velvets, ribbons and chiffons to leading retailers like Marshall Field and Co. When Louis Stirn moved to Staten Island he married Laura Natalie Methfessel in 1888. Laura was the daughter of Professor Anton Gotlieb Methfessel and Laura A. Roebling Methfessel. The professor was considered one of the most prominent educators on Staten Island and founded the Methfessel School in 1862. The boys boarding and day school would go on to become the Staten Island Academy. How 148 indulgememagazine.com

interesting that this one home has connections to the family that built the Brooklyn Bridge and founded one of the best academic institutions on Staten Island. The Stirns took an active part in the community life of Staten Island. Louis Stirn was a member of the SI Chamber of Commerce, the Staten Island Civic League, and the Richmond County Country Club as well as the Manhattan Club. Laura Stirn was a founder of the St. Cecilia Society of Staten Island (a women’s singing society) and was a member of the Staten Island Institute of Arts & Sciences, the Staten Island Bird Club, and the Garden Club of Staten Island. She was also an expert on Botany and horticulture, which would explain the home’s South facing, sun drenched Conservatory. With several arched, double paned French doors and floor to ceiling latticework walls, this is where Laura was known to cultivate and nurture her collection of rare, exotic plants. Through the years the house has had several reincarnations: In the early 1960s, the Stirn family sold the house to the Gross family and circa 1968, the Gross family moved out and loaned the house to a yeshiva for two years before moving back. Then, in the late 1970s a group of entertainers, including Roberta Flack, rented the home for a time. Also,

for several years it was the official residence of the former President of Wagner College, Norman Smith, and his family. In 2000, former owner Avery Gross created quit a stir when he applied to build two homes in front of the estate and three townhouses.. The New York City Landmark Preservation Commission declined to landmark the rear lot, but in 2001 they did designate the Stirn mansion a NYC Landmark building. Also in 2010 the Louis A. and Laura Stirn Mansion was listed on the New York State and National Register of Hisotric Places. These are significant accomplishments to ensure that the mansion maintains its original integrity in perpetuity. Fast forward 100 years from when the Stirn House was originally built, and then began the mansion’s transformation journey from a private home to a public arts and cultural institution. That is, in 2008 the house was purchased and subsequently donated to the newly formed not-for-porfit, The Italian Cultural Foundation. At that time the ‘Stirn Mansion’ was also renamed Casa Belvedere meaning “house with a beautiful view”, as it is poised atop Grymes Hill, boasting spectacular views of New York City Harbor and The Verrazano Narrows Bridge.

The Italian Cultural Foundation’s mission is to preserve, promote and celebrate all things Italian. Individuals and families of all backgrounds who have an appreciation for arts, culture and cuisine are welcome. From language classes to cooking classes; from art exhibits to photo displays; from film festivals to fig festivals; from Opera Night to Big Band Orchestra Night; from group plays to one man shows; from Festa D’Italia to Carnevale; from lectures to presentations; from fashion shows to car shows….it all happens at Casa Belvedere. The Italian Cultural Foundation at Casa Belvedere is currently in its sixth year of a $5 million dollar capital campaign for the continued preservation and restoration of the 14,000 square foot Landmark Building. $3 million dollars has already been raised predominantly from New York City and New York State capital improvement and historic preservation dollars. Additionally, private donors and private foundations have also contributed to that $3million total, but $2million in funds are still needed to complete the project. Help change Staten Island’s cultural and topographic landscape forever by making a tax-deductible donation today. Astrological Forecasts...

A

By JoAnn Vivirito

re we still searching for the “indulgent” days of Summer or are we ready to surrender to the changing temperatures of Autumn? September ushers in a season of new fashion, loose and flowing hairstyles and sharp and vivid color everywhere. Those are the obvious changes but as the planetary energies begin to align for a new season, we are vibrationally aware of the power of Fall awakening. This season, we are reminded of the benefits of “renewal” to our mind, bodies and spirits. As we begin with our routine and rituals, we are clearly conscious that beauty comes from inside out. Penetrating through the exterior of any issue requires us to recognize the benefit to its powers. For the balance of this year, we will be committed to choosing and finalizing the opportunities that have presented themselves with excitement and enthusiasm. Recognizing how those opportunities are in our best interest will depend on our exploration of the previous months. In these remaining months, we will make up for lost time, benefit from doing our homework and reevaluating our directions. Mercury (communication and reason) has provided insight into our personal environment and what’s needed to maintain our needs. We will be entering two more seasons clearly defining how we will “reap what we have sown” and a period of hibernation! Hopefully, we will have remembered the importance of “saving for a rainy day”, literally and figuratively! After October 9, 2015, we need to have our plans for the balance of the year ready to put into action. Execution of those plans will make the difference of what opportunities will be in your best interest. As the year comes to a close, it is always in our best interest to make these next few months count as time becomes precious. This year has offered us a myriad of opportunities -- some great and some small. Whatever they were and continue to be, we’re still required to chose wisely and assert the best understanding of what is best for us!

Your three-month forecast from “Indulge” and the universe!

The cool breezes of Autumn and the brisk Winter winds prepares our energies to withstand the changes that each sign encounters with confidence. We will all know what it takes to achieve the recommended forecast for each sign and take heed to its suggestions. “Indulge” offers you the best in astrological forecasting to maneuver through the months ahead to maximize your journey. Happy travels through the mind, body and spiritual experience!

Oct: Your dream state is working overtime and getting your attention with its vividness so allow inspiration to flow. You’ll soon know why. Nov: Ordinarily chitchat and superficial conversation doesn’t interest you and this month you have less tolerance than usual for it. Just tune it out to be safe.

Optimistic Sagittarius struts their new direction and is excited.

Oct: “Limitations” interfere with your personal life as well as business life more now than usual. You must respect your need for freedom or it will demand your attention. Nov: Your fears have held you back before but don’t let it now. You have the support you’ve always wanted. Cooperation from others is easier than ever before.

Unpredictable Aquarius feels the confusion but hopeful with anticipation.

Sept: It’s difficult to express yourself so don’t try. It will sound like double talk. There will be time for the truth as soon as you’re clear on what needs to be said. Oct: It’s not always easy to take stock of your emotions -- good or bad. You need to stop avoiding them. Once you do, you will be pleasantly surprised at what you learn. Nov: Always ahead of yourself, you can miss what’s important now. You know there’s something wonderful on the way. Until then, entertain yourself! Timing is everything.

Dreamy Pisces welcomes a healthy dose of reality.

Sept: Ground yourself this month. Anchor your thoughts, actions and feelings with some much-needed reality. Focus is a requirement that will be your best friend! Oct: Bringing heaven and earth together is impossible but not in your eyes. This is why you need to bring balance into your life instead of chaos. You can do this. Release burdens. Nov: Sponge-like as you are, this month heightens your psychic inclinations. Recognize that others people’s energy can and does invade your personal space. Alone time is essential to recharge. Know where you “end” and others “begin”!

Astrologer for over 35 years, JoAnn Vivirito 917.498.1059

Sept: Your natural ability is telling you to reroute your direction. Incorporate a practical and relevant purpose. Opportunity awaits and you’re optimistic as usual. Oct: Your new direction presents responsibilities and you’re anxious to get started. Know you’re required to take it slow. Be observant. If not, you may miss something relevant! Nov: Your adventurous nature doesn’t need to know why. You’re as informed as you need to be. Let others know you’re good without their input.

Structured Capricorn needs to lighten up in its best interest!

Sept: Recognize what matters to you other than work. Attend to your personal needs for a change. They are important and you need to respect that.
