The transition to low-CO2 or zero-CO2 energy technologies is hindered by the fact that there are few suitable alternatives for fossil fuels replacement in the industrial and transportation sectors (~60% of total energy consumption representing ~44% of global CO2 emissions, 2017).1-4 Hydrogen has been endorsed as the fuel of the future and the potential of its use is regarded by many as the main route to reach a fully decarbonized energy economy. However, for hydrogen to take over oil and natural gas and become the main energy vector, some major issues need to be addressed. In addition to transport, storage and safety challenges, its cost-competitive and environmentally friendly production is still the subject of notable research efforts at many levels. Currently, the main industrial process to produce hydrogen is steam methane reforming (SMR) (grey hydrogen). SMR can produce hydrogen at a very competitive price (~1€ of operating expenses), but releases ~10 kilograms of CO2 for each kilogram of generated hydrogen. Despite the addition of carbon capture sequestration (CCS) to SMR, which is necessary to make it a carbon free hydrogen production technology and may reduce CO2 emission to a large extent, questions about CO2 storage remain unanswered. The main commercially viable existing alternative to SMR to produce clean hydrogen is water electrolysis (green hydrogen). However, due to its high electricity consumption, electrolysis cannot be considered as the unique methodology to meet worldwide demand for clean hydrogen. Clearly, to close the sustainability loop, electricity demand for electrolysis should come from renewable resources. Beside the numerous advantages of the green hydrogen concept and its actual applicability, a large scale implementation of renewable electricity production plants (i.e. wind, solar, etc.) is required contextually to overcome current renewable electricity market limitations in terms of production capacity5.

Unconventional processes that entirely eliminate the production of CO2, such as the direct conversion of natural gas to hydrogen and value-added carbon materials (carbon nanotubes, carbon fibers, black carbon, etc.), may be a path toward reducing emission sources and meeting rising energy demand, without resulting in a complete overhaul of the industrial and transportation sectors.6 Methane pyrolysis has gained a lot of interest in the near past as a promising option to produce hydrogen and carbon containing molecules without direct greenhouse gas emission. Moving from the first thermal pyrolysis process established by R.G. Wulff in 1936 to produce acetylene7-9, other technologies such as methane thermo-catalytic pyrolysis (TCP) thave been extensively developed 10-14. Within new technologies to produce hydrogen while fixating the carbon content of natural gas in usable materials, plasma generators are of great interest as they can efficiently close the sustainability loop exploiting renewable electricity sources to meet the endothermic nature of natural gas thermal cracking. In this process, plasma provides a dense source of energy to trigger and maintain the reaction sequence of methane cracking, inducing a fast evolving radical chain mechanism7. Turquoise hydrogen production from methane or natural gas is an interesting route to follow in the race toward a hydrogen economy. It allows to produce hydrogen without direct CO2 as it sequestrates directly the carbon content of the methane precursor in the form of solid carbon powders. Solid carbon is much easier to transport and store than CO2 and can have a non-negligible economic value once commercialized. The higher the commercial value of the produced materials, the lower the price of hydrogen that can be sold to the market.

9

Plasma processes can be classified as i) thermal plasmas, also known as hot plasmas (>700°C) including direct current (DC) arc torches, alternating current (AC) arc torches, radio frequency (RF) inductively coupled torches, and high-frequency capacitive torch, and ii) non-equilibrium plasmas, referred to as cold plasmas (<700°C), including microwave, corona discharge plasma, dielectric barrier discharge plasma, atmospheric pressure glow discharge plasma, and gliding arc discharges15. All these plasma technologies operate at atmospheric or sub-atmospheric pressures. Generally, thermal plasmas achieve higher methane conversions than cold plasmas, i.e. >80%. This goal can be achieved with or without catalysts.16-20 Despite its higher selectivity21, the major drawback of cold plasmas is the restricted conversion due to inhomogeneity in discharge space, implying limited reaction region22, which determines major challenges in technical scale up. However, Longmier et al. developed an RF non-thermal plasma reaction chamber that was efficient for fully decomposing CH4 into H2 and carbon graphite23. DC thermal plasmas, and in particular three phase plasma torches, are among the most promising technologies for treating methane and light gases. In the 70’s, the ultra-refractory laboratory of CNRS 66-Odeillo had developed a plasma reactor for methane pyrolysis that used AC current and three electrodes24. Fulcheri et al. extensively studied hydrocarbon conversion to hydrogen and carbon using the CNRS plasma reactor. They reported carbon yields of 50% for methane and 60% for ethylene feeds25-27, respectively. However, some challenges have to be addressed. In plasma reactor technologies, methane is diluted with inert gases like nitrogen and argon28, so that it is necessary to purify gaseous products, at the expense of a significant increase of the capital and operating costs of the process10. Another drawback of thermal plasma technologies is that electrodes periodically need to be replaced due to erosion phenomena. This causes significant additional costs rendering the solution less attractive from a marketing perspective. Last but not least, the lack of complete conversion and complete selectivity towards hydrogen and solid carbon and the competitive formation of unwanted products such as amorphous carbon (i.e. particulate matter), acetylene and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (Figure 1), is motivating current research efforts at Politecnico di Milano in understanding the chemical and physical phenomena involved in methane thermal cracking both in plasma reactors and in fludized bed reactor typically used in thermo-catalytic pyrolysis processes.

Our PAC range, called Power Family, is scalable in performance and cost and expandable via CANopen and EtherCAT fieldbuses.

14

Their real time multitasking operating system, mainly motion control oriented, allows the integrated management of PLC, CNC and HMI tasks while ensuring axis sampling times that can even be less than 1 ms. The new Power A, which is undoubtedly the most powerful controller of the Power Family, has been designed to offer the best possible performance on the EtherCAT fieldbus which can operate with sampling times of 500 µs and manage up to 40 axes, both interpolated and non-interpolated.

INDUSTRIAL TECHNOLOGY

In this context, the CoE (CANopen over EtherCAT), EoE (Ethernet over EtherCAT) and FoE (File Access over EtherCAT) protocols have been developed to allow maximum operational comfort in the commissioning phase. To allow connection to drives that do not support EtherCAT, 6 axis interfaces in wired logic are also available (AX1 ... AX6) which each allow the connection of 1 bi-directional 5V Line Driver incremental encoder, 2 inputs for travel limit switches, 1 drive enable output and the 5V Line driver outputs that generate the Step / Direction signals to manage the Stepper or Brushless drives at frequencies of up to 2 MHz. Finally, there are a few analog and digital inputs and outputs, a couple of RS232 serial ports, a RS485 serial port, a CANopen port and two USB sockets. Communications to the other devices located both at the operational (OT Device) and at the information (IT Device) level are supported by an Ethernet 10/100T port and by a wireless port that manages the Wi-Fi and BLE protocols. This product family is equipped with free software for developing and debugging applications and a suite of paid software programs, called Tex Smart Gateway 4.0, for their integration within the new I4.0 architecture.

aeronautical industry, further increasing its operational potential in terms of quality and competitiveness. “The evolution and quality expressed by our company in recent years - confirms Davide Lugli - have contributed to decisively and strategically shape the future of our company. We expect to expand the number of customers related to the aerospace sector and increase our production volumes, in view of a diversification strategy to remain competitive on the market in the coming years”. To the strict needs of these sectors (but not only), the company responds with skills, experience, and stateof-the-art technological equipment. “In recent years,” Lugli emphasizes, “we have invested heavily in our employees and in Industry 4.0 to make our organizational structure even more efficient and to improve processes. The high quality of our products is already positioned at a high level in other sectors. And this is guaranteed by primary brand machinery, a metrology room equipped for the required controls, a chain of certified external suppliers and, last but not least, the constant training of our employees towards new goals. We have also started a Lean Management process that is a medium-term tool to further transform our company in terms of optimization and waste elimination”. Keeping up with new market challenges LAM closed an extremely positive 2021, with a growing turnover of 4.5 million euros, driven mainly by the sectors related to the world of machine tools, automatic machines linked to various industrial sectors, and aeronautics, and supported by an export quota that marks a +35%, thanks to the opening of commercial channels in Germany, Belgium and the consolidation of the Swiss market. “A result - continues Lugli - which brings with it new

INDUSTRIAL TECHNOLOGY

investments related to the machinery that will be implemented during the year. Starting from March, our technological equipment will include a new machining center in the milling department and a new lathe, in addition to the machines already present. While waiting for the construction of the new, larger and more modern production facility to be completed, we will be able to support the various expansion projects of our customers and the sectors we serve”. A clear vision, therefore, of how the company sees itself in the immediate future. “In the long term - concludes Lugli - we are working to make LAM a reference company in its sector, imagining it as a modern, international company, full of enthusiasm in its employees, sustainable and respectful of its territory. Our dream is to make it totally independent from our family, giving it a breath of fresh air and a stability that can be a guarantee for those who work there every day, us first, following the adventure started in 1979 by the founders, Amedeo and Maura, with a lot of hard work and sacrifices”.

PBN

INDUSTRIAL FANS BUILT TO LAST

Diego Perfettibile Co Owner of PBN industrial fans built to last

Damaged bearing and “burnt” paint due to hot gas leakage

A very simple element that can avoid serious health hazards for operators and frequent maintenance activities.

in industrial plants, indeed. Furthermore, many times it happens that these fluids are being distributed at elevated temperatures, across the entire the plant. However, if the system integrator, supplier of the packages relevant to a specific plant, it reveals to be more sensitive to costs than to safety, very likely it will end up installing standard fans, simply selected out of a catalogue.

In many industrial plants, the installed fans are at high risk of breakage or, at least, jeopardized by frequent failures. But on top of, they subtly imply serious risks for workers’ health and safety. Without anyone being able to notice it, in fact, not negligible quantities of substances can come out of these machines, potentially flammable, toxic or polluting. The presence of these substances, within the flue gases transported through the fans, is very common

22

This kind of piece of equipment, being designed to optimize costs, represent a simple choice when you need to manage just fresh air. The manufacturing choices behind those, lead towards light construction, poorly or not welded at all, thus allowing the gas to pass from the inside to the outside of the fan casing.

INDUSTRIAL TECHNOLOGY

Example of simple seal (ATEX version) installed as standard on PBN fans Furthermore, those kinds of fans are usually being delivered in the field without a critical component, which instead should be a minimum basic requirement when dealing with high temperatures fluids and / or containing dangerous gases or dusts. This component, which goes by the name of shaft passage seal, implements a barrier that can avoid contamination of the external environment with “toxic” fumes passing through the fan. In this way, you can avoid by principle the risk of workers inhaling these dangerous substances and experiencing illness, intoxication and even consequent serious illness. Additionally, this precious element prevents hot, acid or dusty fumes from hitting the fan bearings, damaging them and causing advance breakings, or at lease shortening of their predicted standard lifecycle. It seems to be a paradox, but just even a simple sealing, few hundred euros cost, can avoid severe production interrupts, and forced bearings replacement every 3-4 months. It must be said that the sealing system needs to be carefully selected and sized, with a dedicated engineering calculation, which properly considers operating conditions and the kind of fluid to be managed. There are different types of sealing systems: you can start from the cheapest entry level one, made by one or more discs, basically composed by gasket-

like material; going up to complex (and surely more expensive) mechanical seals, pressurized with a barrier gas, which is often an inert gas like nitrogen. Finally, you must consider that without a seal, up around the 10% of the total fan gas flow rate can escape from the casing. Which means, the same amount of the absorbed power as well. Then you easily understand that the modest investment necessary to install this component can be pay-backed in few weeks of operation, even if the process fluid is simply clean air. The advantage and risk avoided are dramatically higher when you deal with harmful substances to be managed!

GRAZIOLI GROUP

SDGs: SMALL DAILY GOALS

Sustainability is a term that today needs to be included in every aspect of the company, from waste management in an office environments to the reuse of materials in production. For this reason, over the years, Grazioli Cesare Srl has introduced changes and improvements in every area of the company, looking for opportunities for reduction, reuse and waste recycling. The SDGs defined at global level are very ambitious goals and required a significant and constant evolutionary process over time. In line with this philosophy, at Grazioli we decided to take the first step by trying

26

to adapt the industrial tube deformation machines that we have been producing since 1962, as much as possible to the 4 Rs of sustainability. A process that has involved designers, technicians and operators in research and development at the highest levels, to maintain the quality guaranteed by Grazioli brand and at the same time to contribute towards the protection of the planet. After 3 years of research, we can say with pride and satisfaction that we have taken big steps in the right direction and we have a bright road ahead of us that will lead us to the goal of full sustainability.

INDUSTRIAL TECHNOLOGY

1. Refuse: ecological and multi porpose packaging, plastic free environment 2. Reduce: electricity consumption reduction, waste reduction 3. Reuse: interchangeable tools, revamping 4. Recycle: closed circuit oil lubrication with filter chambers

Innovation makes sense if it brings benefits and it respects the development of future generations. This has been our philosophy. We have a long way to go and there is still much we can do in this regards. We are ready and not afraid of challenges, especially since the well-being of all of us is at stake.

2022, the company’s sixtieth year in business, marks the official publication of a second Grazioli patent. After the one filed in 1975, we worked on working units applied to our transfer system with electromechanical operation, in order to reduce the amount of mineral oils needed to operate the system. We are now patent holder of this application. A technological choice that pushes mechanics towards a new frontier of sustainability, a sustainability that day after day aims to become a quality standard of excellence. Introducing sustainability into the production sector has been a major trial for all of us. To say that it was easy would be a lie, but we were happy to face the challenge; on the contrary, it gave us a chance to use all our technical know-how and to learn new skills.

CSICO

ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE APPLIED TO THE INDUSTRY SECTOR: AN INNOVATIVE REAL-TIME DATA ANALYSIS SOLUTION FOR SMES

Constant monitoring of the production cycle to intervene promptly and avoid any waste of time, resources and raw materials and to control the wear and tear of machinery. All this is possible thanks to the application of artificial intelligence algorithms that continuously analyze the progress of processes. Guaranteeing profit margins even within a few weeks. These are the fundamental principles of the solution that C.Si.Co. offers to Italian SMEs. The solution in question, developed in collaboration with Radicalbit, a startup specializing in continuous

28

intelligence technologies, has found interesting results in two main areas, manufacturing and chemicals, providing visible benefits immediately. In the first case, thanks to the constant monitoring of the wear and tear of the spare parts of the machinery used, it was possible to lengthen the life of the machinery by about 30%, guaranteeing considerable savings both from an economic point of view and in terms of time, with the processing cycle reduced by about 10%. Outstanding results, especially if you think about the

INDUSTRIAL TECHNOLOGY

more statistical methods used until now for this type of maintenance, whereby the average life of a spare part was established on the basis of history. Today, real-time data analysis makes it possible to exploit the part until it guarantees adequate performance, regardless of whether this moment arrives earlier or later than expected. The same principle applies to the chemical industry, where the constant analysis of processes allows to correctly modulate the use of even very expensive reagents that are used for work cycles that last up to two days. In this case, artificial intelligence algorithms developed specifically to monitor a given process, suggest within a few minutes the appropriate corrective measures, without having to wait for an analysis that, with more traditional methods, would only be carried out at the end of the work process. The result is that you avoid wasting hours of work and valuable raw materials. Therefore, it is a true revolution of the industrial world

INDUSTRIAL TECHNOLOGY

that provides companies of limited size, including those with a turnover of a few million, with a series of services that until now have been the exclusive prerogative of the giants of the industrial sector.

president of ICONA Design Group - The machinery of factories around the world must integrate and incorporate new technologies, otherwise they will become obsolete. By rethinking the concept behind their equipment, manufacturers can obtain greater functionality and achieve more beautiful and user-friendly machines, resulting in the winning combination: technology + Italian style”. Pursuing this idea, ICONA Design Group has already created two industrial design projects for IMS TECHNOLOGIES, a world leader in Automotive and Converting and Packaging. Two of their machines have been transformed thanks to design, with harmonious aesthetic solutions, different colors and improvements that facilitate human-machine interaction. The machines are Rotomac Icebreaker 165 SG, a rewinder that uses large industrial reels to produce rolls of aluminum, plastic and baking paper for domestic use, and Riboslit by LAEM IMS, a machine for flexible packaging. “It’s not just about aesthetics”, ICONA headquarters declare. “According to the McKinsey Design Index - MDI (which evaluates companies on their design commitment by measuring how much it impacts their financial performance), companies that excel in design increase revenues and profits by almost twice as much as the industry average. By merging

INDUSTRIAL TECHNOLOGY

innovation and Made in Italy design, it is possible to multiply sector opportunities and competitiveness on an international level”. Economic benefits aside, a user-friendly industrial environment also satisfies the current major trends of the working world. In addition to this, factories are increasingly opening up to the outside world through communication and cultural projects. Hence, why not make them more pleasant?

analysis and chemical microanalysis for an accurate quality evaluation. Cements Properties such as particle size, morphology, porosity, water absorption and rheology have a crucial impact on the performance of cements and mortars and on the evaluation of degradation phenomena from natural stones or artificial materials (mortars, plasters). Particle size distribution, particle morphology and surface area are parameters that influence the cement resistance for several reasons, while rheological properties characterization can help in the understanding of the polymerization phenomena. Finally, moisture absorption by building materials may affect their lifetime and should therefore be controlled. Metal powders In the metal powders, particle size distribution, morphology, surface area and density may be cause of shoddy compaction and sintering processes. In ALFATESTLab we offer all these characterizations as well as SEM images in high resolution or automated image analysis, to allow an accurate assessment of any imperfections on the final product. Powder rheology is key to optimise metal powders flow properties. Catalysts In ALFATESTLab we can analyse properties such as

MITIGATING WASTE DISTRESS IN ENERGY-INTENSIVE SECTORS THROUGH ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

The alarming worldwide and Europe’s current energy market situation is quite clear to everyone. According to a report by Allianz, the invasion of Ukraine will propel Europe’s already high energy prices even higher; indeed, they expect at least a 30% increase in the energy bill for 2022. Moving to environmental aspects, reducing the overall carbon footprint impact is one of the EU’s sustainable goals within 2030. This is the reason why so many companies struggle to find the most suitable solutions to cut costs and reduce CO2 impacts on the Planet. Here they come sensors, that completely changed how we capture data - offering a proper tool to plan

52

future actions and drive more efficient performances. Indeed, the better the monitoring and measuring data, the better one can understand a company’s data history and potential use cases for reliable future decision-making actions. For instance, through sensors data, it will be more feasible to determine factories’ total energy use, how much power is consumed by lighting, heating, cooling equipment, and so on. Therefore, keeping data from sensors under control is worthwhile for any manufacturing industry. Disaster detection and Early Warning systems are priceless in such sectors. They can forecast and detect anomalies that might be harmful, providing time for the response system

INDUSTRIAL TECHNOLOGY

to prepare for adverse events and lower their impact. And Artificial intelligence is the most suitable solution here. Thanks to AI and Machine Learning integration, data analysis has been employed to optimise industrial processes and, as a result, to reduce waste and energy consumption to the bare minimum in energyintensive sectors such as manufacturing. Hence, energy efficiency can be achieved through regular data stream monitoring. Here comes Radicalbit’s latest product, Helicon, a platform designed to combine real-time data processing with AI. Employing Artificial Intelligence on industrial devices’ data flow, Helicon can properly provide an Early Warning system to limit the possible negative impacts of irregular production processes.

prompt advantages: in machines using tools subject to wear Helicon was able to intercept anomalies as they were occurring. This dynamic approach raised the instrument’s life expectancy by 30%, just using tools until the very end of their natural life. Founded in 2016, Radicalbit is an Italian Deep Tech company, specialised in stream processing and AI solutions. Radicalbit’s highly innovative product portfolio has been acknowledged by the most relevant international research and consulting companies, such as Garner, Forrester and Zion Research. Considered as a reference point in stream processing technologies R&D (in Academic Education and Business), the Italian company developed products designed to blend Stream Processing and AI.

This method allows saving up to 40% of production energy resources. If the cost-per-unit ratio improves, the process becomes more sustainable. As a result, a company would be less exposed to fluctuations in energy costs. As a concrete example, Helicon has been employed to process IoT data of a chemical factory aiming to detect process anomalies in real-time. The system offers a critical set of information, allowing technical personnel to quickly intervene during the process mitigating, or even avoiding, any negative impact (energy and raw material waste). Applying AI to realtime IoT data - we could say in a dynamic way - brings

ZINCATURA BRESCIANA

PROTECT PRODUCTS OVER TIME? THE ART AND TECHNIQUE OF GALVANIZING

The quality of a manufacturing process is due to the combination of two components: man work and technological performance. Zincatura Bresciana has made them, together with sustainability, the key features of its services. We are in the years of the economic boom, when Italy, a country mainly based on agriculture, opens up to industrial development. Zincatura Bresciana was born in Verolanuova (BS) in 1960 in a climate of ferment and

56

innovation. The company grows by integrating itself into the economic reality of the area, accompanying its evolutions and changes. 1997 marks the great turnaround: Mario Telefri, already customer and leading manufacturer of fibreglass silos, acquires the majority shares and becomes the owner of Zincatura Bresciana, with the aim of transforming it into a national reference point for the sector. The hot dip galvanizing tank, inaugurated in 2000

together with the new factory, is among the biggest in Europe and represents the heart of this process. Foresight and investments - in technology, software and human resources - drive the growth of the company until the entry of the second generation of entrepreneurs, Luigi and Dayana Telefri. This is how the current relevance of Zincatura Bresciana, a company of the Telefri Group with an advanced and dynamic profile, is redesigned. Green galvanizing and qualified consultancy Today, the company offers multiple services related to hot dip galvanizing, which is confirmed as an ideal solution for protecting products of all types and sizes from corrosion. The processing, indeed, takes place using zinc with a degree of purity SHG 99.995, higher than the minimum limit imposed by international regulations. The 2,70-meter width of the tank adds flexibility, as it allows even the most sensitive products to deformation to be galvanized in the best position. All this, according to eco-friendly processes: the company cooperates with universities and experts to implement the chemical composition of the zinc bath, which is lead-free. The automatic temperature control of the drying oven also reduces the thermal impact between the product to be dipped and the galvanizing bath, limiting the emissions of white fumes.

INDUSTRIAL TECHNOLOGY

Together with lead-free treatments, Zincatura Bresciana supports customers in every industrial sector with additional packing list services, technical consultancy, pre and post galvanizing assistance, covered storage of the material, passivation process, logistics and transportation. The attention to quality is shown by the various certifications obtained: ISO 9001: 2015 and ISO 14001: 2015, for environment and ISO 45001: 2018 regarding safety at work. Other certifications obtained are HQZ and Dast 022 which are niche certifications in the hot dip galvanizing sector for the Italian and German markets.

Finding a balance between energy supply security and climate change

The world is experiencing a turning point in international economic and energy policy – one that brings with it rising energy prices, disrupted supply chains and a major impact on global industrial production. At the same time, a growing number of manufacturers are doing their part to combat climate change. The world needs speedy solutions in this area: political, economic and technological. HANNOVER MESSE 2022 is the ideal setting. March 16, 2022 Hannover - From 30 May to 2 June, some 2,500 companies display their technologies for the factories and energy systems of the future at the Hannover Exhibition Center. Under the lead theme of "Industrial Transformation”, they demonstrate how connected production facilities can operate more efficiently and conserve resources as well as how to generate and transmit energy sustainably. "In view of the current global political situation, the topics at HANNOVER MESSE are more relevant than ever,” reported Dr. Jochen Köckler, CEO of Deutsche Messe, at the HANNOVER MESSE preview event. "At the heart of the matter is how we can ensure security of supply and growth in a dynamically changing world – politically, environmentally and economically – while counteracting climate change. Innovative technologies will play a key role in this,” he added. Exhibiting companies include corporations like Siemens, Bosch, Schneider Electric, Schaeffler, Microsoft, SAP and Service Now, joined by numerous medium-sized industrial enterprises such as Beckhoff, Festo, Harting, Pepperl+Fuchs, Phoenix Contact, Wago and Ziehl-Abegg. Accompanying them are major research institutes like Fraunhofer and Karlsruhe Institute for Technology (KIT) as well as roughly 100 startups that find HANNOVER MESSE an ideal platform for networking with industry. Green energies and hydrogen – driving supply security and climate protection When it comes to CO2-neutral production and energy security in Europe, renewable energies and green hydrogen play a key role. Many companies already lead the way with concrete solutions. For example, HANNOVER MESSE exhibitor Bosch created a hydrogen cycle at its Industrie 4.0 facility that produces green hydrogen for industrial processes. Because of the current energy supply debate, the topic of hydrogen is gaining further importance at HANNOVER MESSE. "We have offered the largest European platform for the hydrogen and fuel cell industry for years. In Hannover, more than 200 companies – including Iberdrola, Saint Gobain, Emerson, ElringKlinger, Plug Power, Siemens, Phoenix Contact, Enapter, Bosch, Hexagon Purus, Nel Hydrogen, Hydrogenious and GP Joule – present solutions for a sustainable energy supply based on hydrogen derived from renewable energy sources,” said Köckler. Using digitalization, automation and AI to help combat climate change Europe is striving to become climate-neutral by the middle of the millennium. More and more companies have set ambitious goals and are in the process of completely converting their production and services. HANNOVER MESSE exhibitors supply the necessary technologies. Not only can the production of virtually all goods be made more resource-conserving and energy-efficient with the help of state-of-the-art machinery and equipment, but solutions from mechanical and plant engineering, electrical engineering, and the software and IT industry can also vastly improve the control processes of complex systems, thus boosting innovation and reducing greenhouse gas emissions around the world. Recording the CO2 footprint across entire supply chains is often the first step towards climate neutrality. HANNOVER MESSE exhibitor Siemens has developed software that captures emissions data along the supply chain and combines this with data from the company’s own value chain to determine a product’s actual carbon footprint.

58

Economic policy platform plus Partner Country Portugal German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Portugal's Prime Minister António Costa will jointly open HANNOVER MESSE. This year, Portugal is the Partner Country of the world’s foremost industrial trade fair. More than 120 companies from Partner Country Portugal have registered for HANNOVER MESSE 2022. Under the motto "Portugal Makes Sense”, they present their products and solutions for digital transformation, the energy transition and reliable supply chains. Other political dignitaries, such as Frans Timmermanns, Vice President of the European Commission, and Bettina Stark-Watzinger, Federal Minister of Education and Research, have also confirmed their attendance. This means that after a two-year "coronavirus break”, HANNOVER MESSE once again provides an international stage for economic policy discourse. According to Köckler, "At the end of May, the global industrial community will be looking to Hannover. This year in particular, HANNOVER MESSE 2022 can send economic policy signals and build bridges.” In addition to the exhibits at the show, attendees can look forward to a first-rate supporting program. The four conference stages cover topics like automation, cloud and infrastructure, analytics and data management, digital platforms, robotics, IT security, artificial intelligence, renewable energies, green hydrogen, energy-efficient and CO2-neutral production, digital energy management, the circular economy and much more. The complete program will not only be available to visitors on-site, but will also stream simultaneously via the HANNOVER MESSE website.

Emerson Improves Device and Process Visibility with FieldComm Group Registration

AMS Device Manager is the first software of its kind to be registered under the Field Device Integration standard, making it easier to monitor and optimize plant health March 9, 2022 AUSTIN, Texas: Global software, technology, and engineering leader Emerson announced today that its device management software is the first host software to be fully registered by FieldComm Group® to support the Field Device Integration (FDI) standard. This is a further step in Emerson’s ongoing efforts to reduce the time and effort spent installing and configuring the field devices plants rely on to achieve their digital transformation goals. Field devices collect and transmit important data that personnel use to improve plant health, performance, and reliability. FDI registration will reduce the need for plants to support two different technologies to integrate and maintain field devices. Full FDI registration is important to avoid having a patchwork of systems and devices that only support individual elements of FDI but still require extensive integration effort. Because manufacturers can pick and choose individual FDI features to support, some device management applications will likely not contain every feature a plant requires. Emerson worked side by side with FieldComm Group for nearly two years to enable AMS Device Manager to pass the group’s rigorous testing process for registration, which requires all features to be supported by the software. “Today’s intelligent field devices offer a broad range of data and functionality that plant personnel can use to optimize operations, but without a common standard, collecting that data can be complex and cumbersome,” said Ted Masters, chief executive officer of FieldComm Group. “By completing the process to fully register AMS Device Manager’s FDI support, Emerson is providing its customers the tools to more easily implement a wider range of devices for holistic plant health.” The newest release of AMS Device Manager will make it easier, more secure, and more cost effective to access device data. FDI integration technology eliminates the need for plants to support the two most common technologies for installing and configuring devices: Electronic Device Description Language (EDDL) and Field Device Tool/Device Type Manager (FDT/DTM). Instead, all FDI devices support a single installation package, so organizations will no longer have to double up on time, training, and effort when installing field devices. “FDI integration technology takes the best features of EDDL and FDT/DTM and combines them into a single common standard, making it far easier to select, install, configure, and support new devices,” said Erik Lindhjem, vice president of Emerson’s reliability solutions business. “By adding full FDI registration to AMS Device Manager, Emerson continues its tradition of supporting and innovating on industry standards to help organizations drive more value from digital transformation initiatives.”

CAMEC

CAMEC: A NEW CONCEPT OF INNOVATION

Situated in Cittadella, a northern Italian city just a short distance from Venice, Camec entered the market in 1993 as a supplier for other equipment producers. After this, Camec began developing specific solutions for recycling industrial and municipal waste first and then along the years expanded with three other machinery divisions – handling, bakery and industrial. Camec controls directly the whole production cycle and is highly oriented to the product development, by guaranteeing a continuous technical innovation, that

68

since ever represents one of the main strong points of the company. Besides the design and the construction up to the “turn-key” supply of its systems, Camec offers a 360° personalized service such as feasibility studies, 3D simulation, residual life analysis and revamping, after sale service, also from remote, as well as ordinary and extraordinary maintenance. To stay ahead of the developing market of Italy, but mainly of Europe and beyond, Camec is constantly

INDUSTRIAL TECHNOLOGY

in search of technological alternatives that can lead to more and more competitive solutions. The feather in the cap of the company, indeed, is its approach: Camec deals with “tailor-made” equipment, thus facing all the customer’s needs. If we look deeply into the recycling field, we can state that man has always been looking for effective strategies to recover and reuse his waste materials, but the exponential increase in the amount of waste produced and the need to comply with Italian and international regulations require us to move in the direction of a circular economy and find effective systems for the recovery, treatment and recycling of waste. The change necessary to adopt a series of behaviors devoted to waste prevention not only for individual users but also small, medium and large commercial companies. The change in behavior must be based on the consideration of the entire life cycle of the products – from the extraction of the raw material to their manufacture, from transport to use, from transformation into waste to their management – and evaluating the environmental impact of the various possible options. Just for this reason, CAMEC wants to work always together with its clients in the design, construction and installation of customised plants, proposing

INDUSTRIAL TECHNOLOGY

solutions capable of responding to many different needs, choosing the appropriate shredding, transport and screening systems necessary to guarantee, where necessary, an initial selection of the mass of waste and then to convey the selected materials to further specific plants for the treatment of the individual material. In order to recover and enhance more and more all the materials that can be recycled, in order to protect the environment and human health, but above all with the aim of increasing the “recycling culture”, Camec offers you not a solution, but THE SOLUTION.

Siemens Mobility delivers latest generation hydrogen train Pilot tests from mid-2023 on Bayerische Regiobahn routes Economic Affairs Minister Aiwanger: “An important component of Bavaria’s hydrogen strategy” Transport Minister Bernreiter: “Lighthouse project on the way to climate-neutral rail transport in Bavaria”

March 16, 2022 , Munich - The first hydrogen-powered train for Bavaria is taking form. On March 15, representatives of Siemens Mobility and Bayerische Regiobahn (BRB) signed a leasing contract for the innovative prototype in the presence of Bavaria’s Economic Affairs Minister Hubert Aiwanger and Bavaria’s Transport Minister Christian Bernreiter. The contract is a follow-up to the letter of intent signed by all the participants in July 2021. The two-car hydrogen-powered trainset of the latest generation will be presented to the public in the spring of 2022. The train will be tested on the Augsburg-Füssen route, among others, beginning in mid-2023. Pilot operations in the rail network of Bayerische Regiobahn (BRB) are initially planned for 30 months. The train is expected to officially enter passenger service as of January 2024. Bavaria’s Economic Affairs Minister Hubert Aiwanger said: “Green hydrogen is becoming a key pillar for comprehensive climate protection in the areas of transportation, industry and energy. As Minister of Economic Affairs and Energy, I am pleased that our Bavarian Hydrogen Strategy can increasingly address concrete issues. This train is an important part of this strategy towards a "transport turnaround" with hydrogen, which is why we are promoting this project. I am convinced that with green hydrogen propulsions we can significantly reduce pollutant emissions in heavy-duty and rail transport and contribute to decarbonization. The one-sided dependence on energy supplies can also be reduced and spread across many regions of the world.” Bavaria’s Transport Minister Christian Bernreiter explained: “I’m really pleased that we’ll soon be able to introduce this innovative technology in Bavaria and test it in regular operation. We’re working closely with our partners to get this lighthouse project under way because we’re convinced hydrogen propulsion can also contribute to attractive and even climate-neutral passenger rail transport. Our goal is to achieve this by 2040 at the latest. Bavaria’s support of the pilot project with funding of several million euros is more than well-invested.” Albrecht Neumann, CEO Rolling Stock, Siemens Mobility: “Our Mireo Plus H is the latest-generation hydrogen-powered train. It features high driving power, excellent acceleration capability and a large operating range. This will make rail transport faster, more efficient, eco-friendlier, and more comfortable. The hydrogen-powered drive is an emission-free, advanced form of propulsion for trains that decarbonizes rail transport and makes a substantial contribution toward reaching our climate goals.” Arnulf Schuchmann, Managing Director of Bayerische Regiobahn, said: “Bayerische Regiobahn sees itself as a reliable mobility partner for the Bavarian public and would like to provide them with climate-friendly service day after day. We’re also thinking of the future and are happy to be helping set the course for tomorrow’s mobility today. Notwithstanding all the effort associated with the project, we are very much looking forward to the test operations in our rail network and the know-how we gain for using hydrogen technology in the rail sector. Together with the Transdev Group, to which we belong, and our entire on-site team, we will prepare the project in the best possible way in order to ensure a smooth test start next year.” The hydrogen-powered train is being developed on the basis of the Mireo Plus platform from Siemens Mobility. The main component of the hydrogen traction drive are roof-mounted fuel cells. The system includes the latest generation of underfloor batteries supplied by the battery specialist Saft. The hydrogen-powered train adapts the successful Mireo regional train platform that is available as a battery-powered version as well as with a conventional electric drive. The development of alternative drives for use in rail transport is part of Siemens Mobility’s overall sustainability drive. The company is a pioneer in the field of sustainable mobility.

HITEMA

HVAC INDUSTRIAL SOLUTIONS BY HITEMA INTERNATIONAL: MORE THAN 30 YEARS DRIVEN BY INNOVATION

Air-Cooled/Freecooling Chillers with Turbocor Compressors connected with HYD Hydromodule System specially designed for Data Center Application Hitema International, an important international player specialized in HVAC solutions that last year has celebrated its first thirty years of activity. 1.Could you explain when/who Hitema was created? Hitema® has been created over 30 years ago from my father, Mr. Burba, a person with great knowledge and experience of the HVAC and Refrigeration products and market. A person committed to work with method and with a mental attitude capable of “create”, build and always innovate. Last year we have celebrated an important milestone for Hitema®: the 30th years anniversary and we are so grateful for the current market response to our products and our Brand. 2.2021 Turnover, employees, countries (or continents) involved in production and sales. We are glad to say that Hitema® is still growing – both in facilities and in people (despite the current

84

pandemic situation). We have just completed the construction of the last manufacturing plant, the 6th for us, with a total of more than 19.000 sqm of indoor space. We are now hiring new staff - we strongly believe in the importance of investing in young people, young minds capable of creating and thinking “out of the box”. We are grateful for the result achieved in 2021, which are the result of a great collaboration of our Team and our Partners. It is very important for us to point out that during the years 2020 and 2021 Hitema® has invested over 20% of the turnover to improve its products and services. We sell our products on all continents, all over the world. We have recently expanded into Australia and New Zealand as well, and we are very proud of this important new achievement. 3. Describe Hitema. Why you should choose Hitema? In my opinion there are three keywords/concept

INDUSTRIAL TECHNOLOGY

able to describe Hitema. The first keyword able to describe Hitema is without any doubt the word CUSTOMIZATION. We are able to offer to our customers a complete range of possibilities of customization, starting from the mainframe of the machines, to the color, the refrigerant, as well as all the special requirements upon customers/projects demands. We are a complete industrial reality, with a new renewed carpentry and laser machine department, made up of people and machines with very different skills and knowledge, but always interconnected, able to quickly change the production and to increase the customization of semi-finished products using onboard the Hitema® machines. The second keyword able to describe Hitema® is TRUST. Hitema® is really a trusted Partner for its customers. We have started our business as a small familiar reality more than 30 years ago, we have maintained a working approach based on trust and solid relationship with our Partners and on the reliability and high quality of our products. Our new Spare Parts and After Sales department offer a continuous support to the customers representing a real point of reference. This department manages the after-sales & spare parts service for all the units: every single request received by the Hitema Team is recorded in a “Diary”. It is associated with all the data of the machine but also the specific codes of the spare parts requested. The function of the “Service Recovery” is that to record and catalog all the reports of problems and malfunctions received from our customers. The reports are managed through a procedure interconnected with the company management system: In this way our company has a real “thermometer” that constantly measures customer satisfaction. The third concept able to describe Hitema® is CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT. This is really the key concept of Hitema® work philosophy. Continuous improvement allows us to always have a future-oriented approach, and to always give a better service to our customers. 4. How important is innovation technology in your company? Innovation is essential for us. It is the key that allow us to play an important role in the market and that differentiates our Company from other market proposals. As I told you before, during the years 2020 and 2021, Hitema has invested over 20% of the turnover to improve its products and services for customers more and more. 5. How sustainable are the solutions you propose and how much attention you pay to the environmental sustainability of your industrial proposal? This is another fundamental point for us: the sustainability and eco-friendly design of our products. I’m a father before I’m a business man. I feel the responsibility of my behavior towards future generations. I strongly believe that the vision of a sustainable development is the right choice, respecting future generations. It is with this approach,

INDUSTRIAL TECHNOLOGY

and also considering the market demand and the new standards in force, that Hitema has expanded its Chiller portfolio with new Series, not only using ecofriendly refrigerants like HFO R1234ze, HFC with low GWP like R513A, R32, R454B, R449A and the natural fluid PROPANE (R290), but also developing the new TURBOCOR Series. Environmental sustainability and high energy efficiency, are the main goals achieved by our technical department during the development of our products, in compliance with new regulations and with ethics towards the environment and the next generations. 6. In your opinion, what are the most interesting trends for the next two years? Considering the pandemic, which has had during last year and is having now a strong impact globally, I believe there will be an ever stronger advance towards low environmental impact and eco-sustainable solutions. We have all understood the importance of a sustainable development and we are ready to support our customers with this new challenge as well. We are already able to provide these solutions, with dedicated customized production, for our projects. In addition, we are now developing new standard Series of Chillers with configuration and refrigerant specifically designed for low environmental impact solutions. 7. What are the most important events of the year in which normally you need to participate? (fair, openhouse, meeting, conference, other) Like everyone else, due to the current pandemic, we have had to cancel the participation in the exhibitions last year. I am thinking for example of the Chillventa exhibition in Nuremberg - Germany. However, we have continued to have an ongoing relationship - face to face - with our customers and partners thanks to the communication tools now available. We organize weekly videomeetings with our Dealers – using this tools we maintain an active relationship, we introduce the news of our products, we provide support when needed and we train new staff on our products. It is very important for us to be constantly present to support our Partners. It is essential to achieve the goals together! However, we can’t wait to see our customers in person, we are already planning the events/fairs to attend this year.

What Every Small Business Owner Should Know Today

Given how much has changed about the way people do business over the last few years, experts say it may be time for entrepreneurs to rethink how they store and protect company data, and collaborate with their teams. According to Brian Mallari, a marketing director in Western Digital’s hard drive business unit, a shared storage or network attached storage (NAS) solution can help, and here’s why: • Cost: As every owner of a small- or mid-sized business (SMB) knows, cutting costs without cutting corners is key to protecting the bottom line. While cloud storage fees can incur ongoing costs, adopting a NAS solution is a great way to pay once while keeping sensitive data local to the office or home. • Capacity: Before selecting a storage solution, consider your needs. From wedding photographers to graphic designers, many businesses need a storage solution that can grow over time. Popular NAS storage drives for small and medium businesses, such as the WD Red family of products from Western Digital, range in capacity from 1 terabyte (TB) to 18TBs, making them a good solution for those who work with large amounts of data.

94

• A shifting workplace: With hybrid and remote workplaces becoming the norm for businesses of all sizes, this has added new challenges for business owners and their staff wishing to easily collaborate, edit files and work with shared files and databases. With a NAS storage system, all users’ PCs and laptops can be assigned permission to access the storage solution, giving them the ability to load files and data wirelessly or via connected ports. What’s more, such a system can help protect your team’s work and data against loss from a network outage or potential cyberattacks, as remote/home data can be backed up to the storage device itself at the office. Because NAS solutions use several hard drives, they can provide protection of data via redundancy, also referred to as RAID. In other words, should one drive fail, the data lives on. • Getting set up: Getting set up with a SMB NAS storage system is easy. The solutions are available at consumer electronics stores and online, and you can choose from a NAS system that includes from two to 24 slots or “bays” for hard drives to make sure all your data is covered. Most NAS solutions, especially two- and four-bay solutions, can simply plug into an internet router via Ethernet. To learn more about NAS-ready data storage options, visit westerndigital.com. “In today’s world, small- and mid-sized businesses need both reliable, affordable data storage solutions, as well as tools that allow for collaboration among workers near and far,” says Mallari. “Rethinking how data is stored can help entrepreneurs achieve both these goals.”

Emerson Technologies Selected for Geothermal Clean Energy Production

Geological modeling software will help HITA increase safety and reliability of sustainable geothermal energy sources February 22, 2022, BRUSSELS – HITA, a deep geothermal energy company in Belgium, has selected global software and technology leader Emerson as a key technology provider in the discovery and development of geothermal energy sources in Northern Belgium. Emerson’s geological and reservoir modeling software will help reduce risk in selecting locations for renewable geothermal energy projects, increasing the safety and reliability of construction and operation while enabling long-term sustainable energy production from the Earth’s heat. Climate change policies are driving growth of geothermal energy—an industry forecasted to grow as much as eightfold in the European Union by 2050, according to the International Renewable Energy Agency. Emerson’s geological modeling software will help HITA locate the most suitable subsurfaces for drilling deep geothermal wells to unlock sustainable energy sources for corporate and municipal use. “A highly accurate and realistic picture of subsurface geology is critical for the safe development of sustainable energy sources,” said Stijn Bos, chief operating officer and senior project geologist at HITA. “Emerson technologies use seismic, geologic and other data to generate detailed models that can determine the best location for geothermal plants.” Emerson’s SKUA-GOCAD modeling software will help HITA more easily identify drilling locations by creating highly realistic models designed for easy interpretation. “Geological exploration and production software, including Emerson’s SKUA-GOCAD modeling software, has traditionally been used in the oil and gas industry. But it’s also well suited for geothermal energy, as well as carbon capture and storage,” said Mark Bulanda, executive president of Emerson’s Automation Solutions business. “Emerson’s advanced, science-based applications will help move society toward a safer and more sustainable future.”

NEWS

The Global Supply Chain Logistics Crisis

The industry continues to navigate the unprecedented global supply chain challenges. Most of the companies complained about bottlenecks and problems with the procurement of preliminary products and raw materials from Germany to the US. The current material shortage was not expected to go away in 2022 but there was optimism about a less pronounced impact since companies get better at forecasting and responding to potential disruptions. This optimism was swept away by the Russia-Ukraine Conflict and the global supply chain logistics crisis will be worsened again. Russia-Ukraine Conflict This conflict has resulted in horrific humanitarian impacts and global implications. As this conflict continues, it will also have significant impacts to the global supply chain leading to further shortages of raw materials. The longer the conflict the worst its impact on the global economy considering the position of the two countries:

Dr. Eng. Mor Nguirane Chemical Engineer

106

- Russia is the third largest producer of oil, accounting for 12% of global production and the second largest producer of natural gas and account for an estimated 24% of all global reserves. As sanctions and restrictions persist, this will continue to drive energy prices and transportations costs on a global scale. - Russia is the second largest producer of aluminum accounting for 6% of global smelter production. With the global aluminum market already tightly constrained, we have seen prices rise by over 13% since the start of the conflict. - Russia is the seventh largest copper producing country, accounting for 4%–5% of global production. While this is less significant than some other materials, the instability and uncertainty coupled with declining stockpiles resulted in copper pricing hitting an all-time high at the end of last week. - Both Russia and Ukraine provide critical supply chains to semiconductor (chip) components including 40% of global palladium supplies, 70% of global neon production and 10% of the world’s nickel supply. The global semiconductor shortage will worsen if the conflict continues. - Russia, the world's leading exporter of fertilizers, produces more than 50 million tons of fertilizers per year, 13% of the world total. Ukraine was the eighth world exporter in 2020 of urea, the main nitrogen-based nutrient for crops and the fourth for EU agricultural imports.

According to Siegfried Russwurm, president of the German Industry Association (BDI) the situation is unclear: “Currently, delivery bottlenecks for raw materials and intermediate goods are increasing significantly after a few weeks of relaxation on the markets. The war in Ukraine is causing companies additional uncertainty when it comes to importing raw metals and metal-bearing materials.” It's expected to see historic highs on several key commodities in the coming weeks if the conflict continues: Copper: the red metal hit an all-time high on beginning on March 2022 reaching $4.91 per pound, up 10% over the past few weeks, and surpassed the previous high of $4.80 per pound back in May 2021. Uncertainty due to the conflict as well as global stockpiles declining to the lowest point since 2005 are the primary drivers of the increase. Forecasts did suggest an expectation of softening copper throughout 2022, but this could change based on current global conditions. Steel: pricing has softened over the past quarter but has seen an uptick in the past couple weeks due to broader commodity. Aluminum: Rising aluminum prices have only become more volatile, hitting a new record high the first week of March. Pricing has risen and the price of aluminum is up over 75% since March 2021. Russia’s role in the aluminum market as well as continued emission restrictions in China which accounts for 60% of global aluminum production suggest continued volatility near term. Crude Oil: oil prices have risen to the highest point since 2008 with Russia’s role in global oil production. The Brent Crude oil index and the West Texas Intermediate (WTI) indices are up over 35% over the past month

107

Material Lead Times While we have seen a bit of recovery in material constraints in some categories, transportation challenges, raw material constraints, and labor shortages continue to drive volatility and instability in product lead times. Since March of 2020, products lead times increase an average of nearly 60% across all products in all core markets. The real difficulty is the organization of the flows of goods. Ocean freight remains a significant bottleneck: it’s here that 90% of world trade transit. The recovery from post-pandemic has led to high ship traffic with increased waiting time to deposit container and get them back on track with a consequente of container shortage. While COVID cases have declined considerably, labor shortages continue. As the Commissioner for the Economy, Paolo Gentiloni, recalled at a press conference, “in the last quarter of 2021 the unemployment rate fell below the pre-pandemic values and in December it reached an all-time low of 6.4% in EU and 7% in the Eurozone “. At the same time, “EU employment increased by 0.9% in the third quarter, increasing jobs by around 1.8 million and bridging the gap with pre-pandemic levels. The commissioner concluded ‘’ the labor shortage is an increasingly important factor that limits production in various sectors”.

Below are the biggest supply constraints where we are seeing extended lead times and material availability challenges: Semiconductors: sky-high demand for computer chips is expected to keep supply tight through the rest of the year. Chips are used in everything from automobiles to household appliances, and widespread shifts among businesses to 5G are placing additional strain on producers. Semiconductor shortages the past two years are expected to have resulted in revenue misses of more than $500 billion worldwide for suppliers and customers, according to a Deloitte report. Semiconductor producers have taken steps to ramp up production, and capital expenditure projects announced before the pandemic are predicted to add even more capacity this year, according to the report. Aluminum: tight supply of aluminum has created problems for the construction industry and for beverage makers who have had trouble getting their hands on enough aluminum cans. China shortened production of aluminum and other energy-intensive metals last year as part of its plan to reduce carbon emissions. Surging natural gas prices in Europe have also pushed some producers to shorten production. Europe lost more than 650,000 tons of annual production capacity since the rise in energy prices began in October. Plastics: a Texas ice storm and two hurricanes along the U.S. Gulf Coast walloped the chemicals supply chain last year, causing factory outages and disruptions to manufacturing that dragged on for months. Plastic resins, the raw material used to make everything from packaging to paint, were reported to be in short supply for the 10th straight month in December, according to the Institute for Supply Management. Building materials: high materials cost and a lack of supply are lengthening lead times of construction projects and pushing contractors to use alternate materials. Builders faced long lead times last year of everything from wallboard to garage doors, and shortages come as businesses plan new distribution centers and other massive capital expenditure projects to add resilience to their supply chains. The Global Supply Chain Logistics Crisis affects all branches of European and U.S industry, but especially the key sectors. In Germany for instance, 89% of companies in the automotive industry and mechanical engineering report delivery problems. Manufacturers of data processing devices and electrical equipment follow closely behind with roughly 88% each. As such, it remains difficult for industry to fulfill orders and avoid any price increases. Using M. Siegfried Russwurm words ‘’the situation is unclear’’.

CARLO SALVI

CARLO SALVI: WITH INVENTIVE SPIRIT INTO THE NEW YEAR!

For the Italian technology leader in high-tech machines for cold and hot wire forming, the year 2022 will be all about innovation, research, and development. Forecasts are difficult in times of a pandemic – but one thing is for certain: Carlo Salvi, the Italian expert

114

for high-tech cold and hot wire forming machines, will continue to focus on its inventive spirit and innovative power in 2022. “We work on a number of projects, and they all have a common denominator: our vision of the future,” reports Marco Pizzi, Chief Commercial Officer at Carlo Salvi.

INDUSTRIAL TECHNOLOGY

Into the spotlight: CS 513 TH Marco Pizzi: “At the trade show WIRE 2022 in Düsseldorf from June 20-24 we will showcase our new combined machine model CS 513 TH. It represents a new chapter in our company history – the first progressive header with integrated pointing and threading unit opens up a new market segment and will reduce the investment costs for our customers.” On the CS 513 TH, components are cold formed and subsequently pointed and threaded in order to obtain different kind of threads and grooves. “Actually, we had planned to present the machine in 2020 already, but we needed to postpone it because of the Covid pandemic. In the meantime, with implemented improvements on the technology of the machine,” states the C.C.O. Attention to detail, optimized efficiency The progressive five-die-header with integrated pointing and threading unit can process wires with a diameter of six to 13,5 millimeters. The minimum and maximum thread diameter is M6 and M12. The machine layout has been developed “in line“: In order to have a better accessibility and optimized

INDUSTRIAL TECHNOLOGY

ergonomics for the operator, the units are positioned in parallel. The threading movement is driven by a desmodromic cam for a gradual deformation and perfect synchronization between ram movement and introduction of the parts into the flat dies. A control system brings optimized efficiency, and a special device prevents two parts from being fed into the flat dies at the same time. The flat dies housing is suitable for bigger flat dies thicknesses for materials with high mechanical resistance.

wire and Tube 2022 in June in Düsseldorf: The stuff that drives the car industry

February 14, 2022, Düsseldorf - Hydrogen-powered vehicles have already tackled the first stretches. And some experts are sure that many more will follow. For them, fuel cell vehicles are the future of the automotive industry. But still H2-cars are a long way from conquering the roads of the world. It is clear, however, that hydrogen cars need powerful cables and tubes. The industry has to prepare for this development now in order to be able to pick up speed in time. Emission-free driving without having to change over in everyday life - that sounds promising. Because the H2-car can be refueled within minutes and has a range of over 500 kilometres. Impressive arguments that could make battery-based electric cars only see the taillights. Mind you, "could", because there are still only a few hydrogen filling stations and the purchase prices are significantly higher compared to other cars. Hydrogen-driven buses Some auto manufacturers are already on course when it comes to using H2-powered engines. For example, a hydrogen express bus is already on the road in Pau, France. 125 people can take a seat to cover a six-kilometre stretch between a station in the south and the north of the city. A direction that some car manufacturers also want to take. The BMW Group's view is that hydrogen vehicles are an important alternative and supplement to electric battery engines. "From 2025 at the earliest, and depending on market requirements and general conditions, the BMW Group will offer vehicles with fuel cells to customers," the car manufacturer announced. Mercedes already has a pre-series model on the road. Other companies also have produced the first fuel cell vehicles. It's just a start, because so far only a few hundred of them are on German roads. High quality cables The change towards electric and hydrogen cars has consequences for the cable industry. This is because, unlike the internal combustion engine car, there are no cables in connection with the fuel system. In terms of wiring, the hydrogen car is more similar to the electric car - but the main difference is the origin of energy production. In the fuel cell - instead of in the battery as in the electric car - the hydrogen is converted into electrical energy. In both electrically powered vehicles, the electrical energy finally finds the engine and drives it. So H2-powered cars and electric cars have an electric engine. Both in the case of pure battery technology and a hydrogen system with fuel cells, the functional units must be connected with cables. Electric cars and hydrogen cars needed more cables and wires in total than a car with an internal combustion engine. The development of fuel cell vehicles is challenging the cable industry not only in terms of quantity, but also in terms of quality, as higher quality cables are needed. Because hydrogen is extremely flammable. The drive components including cables and tubes must be designed and protected accordingly. Standards as a central theme For tank systems installed in hydrogen-powered vehicles, the subject of standards is of fundamental importance. Railway example: "For hydrogen fuel cell operation, we use rail-approved cables," explains Wolfgang Wolter, Chief Executive Officer Operations + Sales of Wystrach, a manufacturer of hydrogen tank depots for buses and local trains. Depending on the connection and linking technology under consideration, the base materials used would have to exhibit not only conformity to standards but also properties such as good connection and cross-linking properties, if, for example, connector housings were to be moulded on. "In addition, the different installation types, including demands on cable protection, must be taken into account," Wolter emphasises.

Cutting CO2 emissions The network of filling stations is still extremely lacking. Another shortcoming: The tanks must be considerably larger. Experts therefore currently see a greater possibility of getting H2 technology on the road with trucks. Ecological aspects favour the hydrogen car, because it only blows water vapour into the environment via the exhaust. According to a Shell study, by 2050, around 113 million fuel cell cars could cut up to 68 million tonnes of fuel usage and save almost 200 million tonnes of CO2-emissions. "In this way they could make an important contribution to energy saving and greenhouse gas reduction in the transport sector," the Shell study states. Billions of euros for hydrogen The still young industry is very promising. With the National Hydrogen Strategy, Germany aims to become the world's leading supplier of modern hydrogen technologies. The Federal Government wants to use a total of nine billion euros to make the energy source marketable. The funds are flowing into the steel and chemical industries, into the heating sector and also into the transport sector. And in doing so, the H2-vehicle is also slowly coming onto the road and revolutionising the industry. In any case, the next stage of vehicle development is already beginning.

JOTUN

JOTUN – STEELMASTER FAQS Find out the best fire protection option for your structure

1.What is SteelMaster? SteelMaster is Jotun’s range of thin film intumescent coatings which can be used to protect structural steel against cellulosic fire for anywhere between 30 minutes and 180 minutes. SteelMaster is typically used in airports, shopping malls, factories, buildings and power plants. 2.What is thin film intumescent fire protection? Thin film intumescent coatings provide reactive fire protection. The thin coating, covering structural steel, swells to insulate the metal, however this reactive method will only work in a fire situation and

128

remain inert. Due to the changing physical form, fire protection is achieved by thermal insulation that provides a cooling effect. 3.Which materials can SteelMaster be used for fire protection? Jotun’s SteelMaster range is primarily applied to the structural steel used in a building/structured frame. SteelMaster can be also used over galvanised steel providing the substrate is suitably primed and that the appropriate fire rating can be achieved through this. 4.Can SteelMaster be used to fire protect structural

INDUSTRIAL TECHNOLOGY

steelwork for the oil and gas industry? In areas where a hydrocarbon fire may occur, SteelMaster is not suitable. However, another Jotun product such as an epoxy intumescent coating like Jotachar would work for this sector. 5.What are some of the key benefits of SteelMaster? The application process of Steelmaster takes less time due to the quick thin film drying time and efficient and easy airless spray application method. 6.How long does the SteelMaster fire protection last? Jotun as a company offer warranties, if the applied SteelMaster is maintained correctly in can last the lifetime of the building. 7.Is it recommended to have SteelMaster fire protection applied to all steel, including connecting steel sections i.e. bolt heads? Yes. All steel featured in a structure is required to have the same level of fire protection throughout. Therefore, bolt heads and any joining beams should be suitably prepared and primed with the same SteelMaster-level protection. 8.Which primers and topcoats can be used with the SteelMaster range?

INDUSTRIAL TECHNOLOGY

Only primers and topcoats approved by Jotun should be used to ensure the maximum capabilities of the fire protection is enforced. 9.Can SteelMaster protection be applied on site to a structure? Yes, this method provides many benefits for applicators: there is no touch up required from transport damage; there is a faster delivery and erection of steel from the procurement process is the fire protection is applied on site; and technical support is available when working with applicators to achieve the highest possible quality.
