Which markets are pioneering lower-carbon desalination technologies?

– Water scarcity is driving investment in unconventional water resources

– MENA and Asia-Pacific regions dominate the current desalination market

– Renewables mega-projects seek to improve the cost and energy efficiency of desalination

– New technologies could commodify wastewater produced by desalination– Water scarcity is driving investment in unconventional water resources

– MENA and Asia-Pacific regions dominate the current desalination market

– Renewables mega-projects seek to improve the cost and energy efficiency of desalination

– New technologies could commodify wastewater produced by desalination

Long seen as a high-cost, energy-intensive process, desalination mega-projects are seeking to tap renewable resources to limit the cost and environmental concerns of this crucial technology.

In June 2022 ENOWA, the energy, water and hydrogen subsidiary of Saudi Arabia’s NEOM mega-project, signed a memorandum of understanding with French energy company Veolia and Japanese trading company Itochu to develop a reverse osmosis (RO) water desalination facility powered by 100% renewable energy. Slated for completion in 2025, the facility is expected to produce 500,000 cu metres of potable water per day, meeting 30% of NEOM’s anticipated water demand.

In a similar push for zero-carbon desalination, in September 2022 the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) signed a partnership with Dutch start-up Desolenator to develop a solar-powered desalination pilot project.

The companies have already installed a pilot plant at the Jebel Ali power plant and desalination complex, which produces 1000 litres per day, and project the new technology could push the cost of desalinated water as low as $0.02 per litre. Although desalination costs vary considerably based on water source, technology and electricity prices, the average range globally is between $0.50 and $1.50 per cu metre.

8 INDUSTRIAL TECHNOLOGY

DEWA aims to produce 100% of its desalinated water supply from a mixture of renewables and waste heat by 2030.

Global capacity expansion

Over half of the global population suffers from some form of water scarcity every year, and, according to the UN Environment Programme, water supply could fall 40% short of demand by 2030 if no changes are made to water-management systems.

As the costs associated with desalination decrease, the process is likely to play a pivotal role in meeting the UN’s Sustainable Development Goal 6, which aims to “ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all”.

Desalination is already a widespread practice, with approximately 16,000 plants operating in 177 countries. As of 2016 the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region accounted for 46.7% of the world’s desalination capacity, followed by the Asia-Pacific region (17.5%) and North America (12.9%).

Some island countries, such as the Bahamas or the Maldives, are fully reliant on desalination. Limited freshwater reserves and access to plentiful energy reserves have fuelled desalination investment in MENA, especially within the GCC. Approximately half of Saudi Arabia’s annual water demand is met through desalination.

Desalination capacity in the Asia-Pacific region is expected to grow significantly, spearheaded by China. With one of the lowest water resources per capita rates in the world, at around 2000 cu metres, China is investing in a five-year plan to raise capacity to 2.9m tonnes a day.

The country’s struggle with water scarcity was highlighted when this year’s drought challenged China’s significant hydropower infrastructure.

Egypt has also made major strides to expand renewables-powered desalination capacity. In 2021 the country tendered 17 25-year concessions from its sovereign wealth fund to construct solar-powered desalination plants. The plants themselves will be partially powered by renewables which, in combination with green financing, could lower production costs by an estimated 20-25%.

The government is targeting an installed desalination capacity of 6.4m cu metres per day by 2050, up from 800,000 in 2021.

This expansion is set to diversify the water resources of the Arab world’s most populous country beyond the Nile River which currently meets an estimated 97% of Egypt’s water needs as development on the upstream Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam moves ahead.

Desalination should also support the expansion of industrial and residential development further away from the Nile, in line with new urban development plans.

Local solutions

Major strides have been made since the 1970s to lower the cost and energy usage of desalination, mainly through the introduction of membrane-based RO technology. The cost of desalinated water halved between 1980 and 2005, and promises to decrease further with the scaling of new technologies and renewable resources.

While most desalination plants in the MENA region are powered by fossil fuels, the increasing use of renewable energy – coupled with plans for carbon capture and hydro gen production – should help many countries in the region meet their emissions targets.

Solar, in particular, presents a viable and increasingly affordable energy source for plants.

KarmSolar, an Egyptian solar power and utilities company, is constructing a pilot solar-powered desalination plant at Marsa Shagra on the Red Sea coast with a capacity of 200 cu metre per day. According to the company, any unstored excess water supply produced during peak sunlight hours could be used for local construction activities or in hydroponic gardens.

New technologies have the potential to diversify the power sources used in desalination.

The US Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory is sponsoring the development of a hydraulic and electric RO wave energy converter, a modular device capable of using the kinetic power of waves to generate potable water from seawater.

Meanwhile, Manhat, an Abu Dhabi-based start-up, has developed floating platforms that use sunlight to distil fresh water. In a zero-electricity process similar to the natural water cycle, sunlight evaporates seawater within a greenhouse-like structure, separating fresh water from salt crystals.

While these two technologies have not been deployed at an industrial scale, they could be used to complement conventional and sustainably powered desalination facilities in future.

10 INDUSTRIAL TECHNOLOGY

Commodifying wastewater

Another major environmental concern associated with desalination is the production of brine, or wastewater.

Conventional desalination produces approximately 1.5 litres of wastewater concentrate per litre of potable water produced, at twice the salinity of seawater and containing chemicals such as chlorine or copper used in the treatment of equipment.

However, plans to commodify the brine produced in the desalination process could reduce its environmental impact. Treated brine produces high-purity industrial salt, bromine, boron, potassium, gypsum, magnesium and rare metals, many of which can be utilised downstream.

Within the scope of NEOM’s planned desalination plant, brine by-products such as sodium hydroxide could potentially serve as feedstock for the project’s planned green hydrogen production.

river stream flows regularly along the year, granting a 24/7 production. Our effort in these months had been focused on small hydro generation plants, applicable on small/mid-size water stream and an average flow rate of 2.5 m/s; it represents the widest off-grid application in the Italian territory.

Past tech for next generations

Our Hydro-gen solutions utilize Archimedes’ Screw as turbine, one of the oldest technology inherited by Galileo. By ruling the inlet, these small plants grant an average yearly production of 1.182.600 kWh.

We’re realizing 3 mini-hydro plants in Calabria region. The Environmental impact is minimized, with structures hidden in the river context. The flow of the river is not affected by the plant and the underwater life is preserved.

The screw design with the use of finite element method, along to the best efficiency operation target and the maintenance minimization, lead the Projects to reach the Target of our sustainable development. The Engineering efforts, as well as an accurate Materials Selection, contributed to limit the clearance between the Screw and the shelter, for the “state of the Art” Environmental Impact Minimization.

The new digital version of ASL® level switch, manufactured by Terranova® gives liquid level monitoring a new dimension never seen before. No movement, no vibrations, no noises, with auto calibrating feature, this technology has no equals if compared to rotary or vibration measurements. One device for all applications.

The control of level of the fluids is something we deal with in everyday activities. It happens when we open and then close the water tap before we enter the bath tub, or when we want the water tank that supplies

the house to automatically refill, so that we can take a shower without remaining stuck in the very best moment, with shampoo in our eyes. Now expand this thinking to outside our houses, and think to how many applications are based on this simple principle.

The ASL® Level Switch manufactured by TERRANOVA® has been innovated with a new digital heart, so that one level switch can suit all applications. The measuring principle is based on an electronic board that generates acoustic waves directly addressed to an integrated probe. The probe is the

16 INDUSTRIAL TECHNOLOGY
TERRANOVA®

instrument sensor and the waves are dispersed in the fluid in case of submersion in liquid or bounced back in case of dryness.

The new ASL® elaborates the signal in a more stable and robust way, making the instrument more performant and adjustable for all type of fluids, temperature ranges and wetted parts materials. A number of devices that previously were in need of specific calibrations (i.e., water is different from oil, that is different from Soda, etc..), can now be gathered in only one smart device, able to understand the needed sensitivity and thresholds setting.

This new ASL® digital version is also matched with a calibration software, called USC®, dedicated to all field operators. With this new software it is possible to set the operating modes, to manage a big number of parameters, like output type and values (current, frequency or relay), the type of operating (direct or reverse), the probe sensitivity, and to execute an automatic calibration cycle using the Autocalibration function.

We believe the advantages of our technology are now enough from a mere technical point of view to drive to

a change of technology in most of applications.

The number of potential applications is huge: the control of level in beverages tanks in the food industry, the control of level of oil products in Oil and Energies market, the control of level in all the municipalities, the control of ballast tanks and cargo tanks of ships, and anywhere there is a need of regulating the fluid level inside tanks.

HIC TEST

The test consist of exposing unstressed test specimens to one of the two standard test solution -either Solution A, a sodium chloride (NaCl), acetic acid (CH3COOH) solution saturated with H2S at ambient temperature and pressure, or solution B, a synthetic seawater solution saturated with H2S at ambient temperature and pressure. After a specified time the test specimens shall be removed and evaluated. After testing, each specimen must be sectioned and each section must be polished metallographically and etched, so that cracks can be distinguished. The observed cracks are measured and their dimensions (lenght and thickness) are reported in order to calculate the following ratios: CSR (Crack Sensitivity Ratio), CLR (Crack Lenght Ratio) e CTR (Crack Thickness Ratio). These ratios are calculated and reported for each section and the average for each test specimen.

SSC TEST

The test addresses the resistance of metals to cracking failure under the combined action of tensile stress and corrosion in aqueous environments conatining hydrogen sulfide (H2S). This phenomenon is generally termed sulfide stress cracking (SSC) when operating at room temperature and stress corrosion cracking (SCC) when operating at higher temperatures.

SSC of metals exposed to oilfield environments containing H2S was recognized as a materials failure problem by 1952. Laboratory data and field experience have demonstrated that even extrememly low concentrations of H2S may be sufficient to lead to SSC failure of susceptible materials.

DAMEC

When the success is a matter of a few microns

Have you ever wondered how you get the smooth sliding of the cylinders of your car? Or the perfect rotation of the gears of your mechanical wristwatch? The answer is a unique process called “honing”.

Honing is somehow an art rather than the more widely spread machining, it is achieved through the use of stones, carefully selected to condition the metal to get an accurate, even surface. It is usually the last step of many production processes and, however, the most critical where tight tolerances of mechanical coupling do affect the functionality or the performance.

Honing is in fact the most precise finishing, capable to achieve finishing with errors lower than 1 μm and roughness lower than 0,01 μm. For this reason, honing is used for the production of almost all hydraulic devices, gears, power transmissions, engines, gear boxes, bearings, sleeves, weapons, valves, oil pipes, food processing machines, medical devices and in

22 INDUSTRIAL TECHNOLOGY

many other applications. In general, whenever there is a sliding between cylindrical surfaces, honing is the process that most likely would grant the best performance, while minimizing the working time and cost.

Honing can achieve a finishing grade higher than grinding and, in several cases, this latter can be replaced since honing is much more easier and costeffective. Damec is the leading Italian manufacturer of honing machines and, in general, the main developer of customized honing solutions. Our capability benefits from the thirty-five years of experience in the field of our technicians and the everyday passion which lead us to face the new challenges of today market.

The pursue of new solutions, in fact, requires constant application and the investigation of new technologies. In many cases – refers Mr. Maggioni, Damec CTO –“we have to develop and build specific tools to get the result. Only experience can lead us to identify the most suitable techniques to be developed into a prototype and then tested against performance”.

One of the most distinctive features of Damec is the thoroughness of service. “We take care of our Customer’s whole process, trying to identify the solutions that best fit his management. Every new machine, device or tool is fully validated before it leaves our premise” emphasizes again Mr. Maggioni.

For these reasons, Damec is considered a reliable partner form his Customers, constantly increasing his presence in the market and to provide qualified support through all the plant lifecycle. Where the difference between success and failure is a matter of a few microns, here is the playground for Damec to demonstrate his capabilities.

Processing the future

The year 2022 is set to be crucial in the energy transition path being currently pursued by the most valued players in the energy sector. It is clear how the decarbonisation process is unavoidable today. There is a real need to focus on so-called ‘clean fuels’ and to invest in the energy carriers of the future. The World is aiming for independence from fossil fuels, but it is also clear how renewables and fossil fuels will start by coexisting. We will have to go through a period of ‘transition’, in which the Natural gas will continue to play a leading role. That is possible

through the optimisation of distribution networks in a ‘green perspective’ and the conversion to methane of power generation plants currently still running by using fossil fuels.

In this increasingly significant context, REPCo is moving today, with supplies to customers such as Ansaldo Energia and Edison. Cooperating with them, REPCo built gas treatment plants to feed with methane the latest generation turbines of the Presenzano (CE) and Marghera (VE) power stations.

26 INDUSTRIAL TECHNOLOGY REPCO

In the next three years, REPCo will be further engaged on the conversion to methane of ENEL’s power stations in Fusina (Venezia) and probably La Spezia (Italy). In Milan since 1993, REPCo’s field of action has always been Oil&Gas, Power and Petrochemicals, ranging from design and engineering to supply and support for the on-site start-up of process plants and equipment.

Since last June, REPCo opened up to new challenges in the ‘renewables’ sector, alongside Cavagna Group. The recent acquisition by the Brescia-based Group brought together the complementary experience of these two groups to better meet the requirements of the energy transition. Moreover, it allowed expanding the offer with technologically advanced products and services in various application sectors, always looking at the eco-sustainability. With over 250 systems installed in more than 50 countries around the world, REPCo offers not only its knowhow in the development of modular systems in the multidisciplinary management of ‘turn-key projects’, but also the flexibility, reliability and professionalism that characterise its after-sales service.

All aspects that Cavagna Group is also familiar with. Thanks to its over 70 years of experience in the gas market, Cavagna ensures that this joint

venture has a dynamic sales network and an increasingly international outlook. This synergy will allow integration at various levels of the energy chain, especially those involving alternative energy sources.

AI, Quantum Computing And The Energy Problem

In recent years AI (Artificial Intelligence) has made impressive progress in areas such as image recognition and natural language processing, as it can basically do the same thing over and over until it gets it right. However, the amount of energy required to operate systems powered by AI is staggering and presents a problem.

32 INDUSTRIAL TECHNOLOGY

What’s the problem?

Looking at AI-assisted voice programming, you can now see a fairly convincing video of an Eminem diss track against the Royal Family, created by Calamity Ai. They used Shortly AI, a text-generator powered by a GPT-3 system. The lyrics were then sent to 30Hz, a producer who converted the words into vocals. The resulting song sounds eerily similar to the rapper's past work (although the lyrics themselves are amusingly nonsensical for the most part). But, the amount of energy required to operate a system such as GPT-3 is striking. So although we can make parody videos, what about useful tasks that could be performed by an AI? The short answer is that, currently, it takes too much time and energy to train. An AI will repeat certain practises ad infinitum, but this still has to be powered by supercomputers, which can take hundreds or even thousands of hours to program a robust AI system. Combine this with the fact there are currently countless AI systems, which suck up disproportionate amounts of energy, and we have a problem. AI is being adopted by most technological giants and is seen by many as the future. But with the way they operate now, the future will be far from green. Too much energy is being used at a time when humanity is looking to address climate change and sustainability issues.

So what are the potential solutions?

An international team of researchers, including scientists from MIT, have published materials that demonstrate what a 'quantum speed up' could do in a hybrid AI system. Utilising quantum mechanics allowed the AI to find multiple solutions to tasks simultaneously, greatly quickening the process. The team ran 10,000 models through 165 experiments - looking at the performance of classical AI when using special quantum chips. These quantum chips were nano-photonic meaning they used light instead of electricity. The results showed significantly reduced electricity consumption when the quantum chip computers were asked to solve supercomputer level problems. Optical engineering, therefore, emerged as a solution to the problem of excess energy use.

What improvements will the average person see in everyday technology?

One of the more popular AI applications is image recognition for photo organisation in smartphones. Apps such as Google Lens are able to handle a huge library of photos, sorting them by visual topics. One could be broad landscapes while another could be close-ups of graffiti art, for instance. Another use would be an image-based search that could integrate into digital shopping. So a customer could use a reference image they took with their camera or downloaded, and have the AI-powered app check the inventory of a store to find similar products. Huge retailers such as L’Oreal are using Augmented Reality (AR) so that customers can book a live-streaming appointment and have digital make-up sessions. Here they are able to see what lipstick or eyeliner works for them, with the help of data collection and image capture software. So, both technology titans and retail stores recognise that AI will be the way of the future. With the aid of quantum computing, the AI advancements we see in our life-time should be remarkable - think less novelty rap parodies and more along the lines of a global technological revolution.

MP Filtri

Maximum filtration efficiency

“At MP Filtri’s R&D Center in Pessano con Bornago (MI), research projects focused on the study and development of high-tech solutions are always in progress. The latest development is the introduction of a new pleating machine in the prototyping line, entirely dedicated to the study of the pleating/filtering baffle process”.

In order to ensure the ongoing effectiveness of hydraulic fluids, the Milan-based manufacturer constructs its filter elements using specialist materials developed and tested in its R&D Centre

Contamination can be broken into three main categories: solid, liquid and solid particles. Most hydraulic system failures are caused by particle contamination. Increasingly advanced hydraulic

systems are being designed with ever smaller tolerances, making the presence of solid particles in lubricating and hydraulic fluids problematic. Similarly, the presence of gas, albeit in minute quantities, encourages the formation of additional solid fragments generated by the implosion of air bubbles (or ‘micro-bubbles’) at points in the system where large pressure changes occur. The heat generated by these ‘micro-implosions’ can reach up to 2,000

38 INDUSTRIAL TECHNOLOGY
MP FILTRI

°C locally. Lastly, contamination by liquid ingress poses a danger to the physio-chemical properties of the lubricating fluid such as viscosity, filterability and hygroscopicity, (i.e., the ability to absorb water) breaking up the lubricating film and/or causing the formation of water vapor or ice.

One of the main sources of contamination is the introduction of hydraulic fluid into the system: Although new - the standards of cleanliness depend on the manufacturer and may not meet acceptable levels. Tanks with traces of solvents, water, fuels or non-homogeneous liquids may be used and the

tanks may contain residues from assembly work (welding, threading, etc.). In order to prevent initial contamination of the working fluid, decanting and topping up is carried out via mobile filter units (Fig. 1) equipped with correctly dimensioned and selected filter elements.

In order to guarantee the correct functioning of the hydraulic fluid (lubricating power, thermal conductivity, incompressibility), it is necessary to maintain both contamination control and the stability of its formulation. In particular, degradation of the oil due to its use under harsh operating conditions

INDUSTRIAL TECHNOLOGY 39

leads to the generation of carbon compounds, varnish and, in the most extreme cases, partial degradation of the additive package. To ensure an economically acceptable service life of the hydraulic fluid, it is absolutely essential to use filtration systems with optimised filter materials.

MP Filtri’s solutions

MP Filtri manufactures its filter elements using specialist materials developed and tested at its R&D Centre in Pessano con Bornago (near Milan).

Each component of a hydraulic circuit is characterised by a sensitivity to contamination due to the minimum (or critical) tolerances of the mechanical seals and/ or between the moving parts. For each individual component, manufacturers usually provide indications of the maximum permissible contamination level in accordance with industry standards (one of the most widely adopted is ISO 4406). Figure 2 shows the filtration efficiency expressed through the filtration ratio (Beta ratio βx(c)) for the entire range of MP Filtri filter elements. Thanks to a close working relationship with its suppliers and the technologies available at its R&D Centre, MP Filtri has developed a wide range of filter elements suitable for a variety of applications, ranging from very demanding cleanliness levels (3 µm) to solutions optimised in terms of hydraulic system energy losses (pressure or pressure drop). They always guarantee high-performance filtration (Beta ratio βx(c) ≥ 1000) up to 25μm(c) (Fig. 2).

A unique feature of MP Filtri’s filter elements, compared to other competitors, is that its filtration grades indicated by alphanumeric codes (A06, A10, A16) refer to the respective filtration performance (e.g. 6µm(c), 10µm(c), 16µm(c)) with a Beta ratio βx(c) equal to or greater than 1,000, corresponding to a filtration efficiency of 99.9%.

The Beta ratio is the ratio between the number (concentration) of particles entering the filter and

the number (concentration) of particles leaving the filter greater than the reference size, for example, β10(c) ≥1000 means that after passing through a filter a concentration of 1,000 particles ≥ 10µm(c) will become 1 particle ≥ 10µm(c). Another distinctive feature of MP Filtri filter elements is the stability of filtration performance throughout the filter’s operating time. Chart 3 shows the filtration ratio Beta βx(c) (Fig. 3A) and the filtration efficiency (Fig. 3B) at 10µm(c) over the duration of the Multipass ISO 16889 test. During filter operation, the filtration performance deteriorates because of the increased pressure drop due to clogging. From the graphs it can be seen that MP Filtri elements (blue curve), compared to competitor products (green and orange curves), do not undergo significant decreases in filtration performance.

‘An added value of MP Filtri elements is the stability of filtration performance throughout the filter’s operating time’

As one of the largest system providers for the food, beverage and pharmaceutical industries, GEA is highly diversified worldwide. The company has developed an extremely heterogeneous IT infrastructure consisting of more than 60 ERP systems, which are to be replaced by a single ERP instance: SAP S/4HANA.

In the search for a suitable platform to automate the new source-to-pay process, the choice fell on SAP Ariba Guided Buying. This solution offers GEA the flexibility to map the purchasing requirements of their various company units. Moreover, Guided Buying is in

line with GEA’s global digitalisation strategy and can be seamlessly integrated into the existing multi-ERP system environment. The connection to the strategic Ariba functions, which GEA had already introduced for sourcing and contract management with suppliers, is just as simple.

To further facilitate communication with the existing ERP system landscape, SAP S/4HANA Central Procurement (CP) was also introduced. CP acts as an integration layer in which the procurement processes from different ERP systems can be merged, centrally controlled and standardised.

Following the project launch in March 2021, GEA completed the pilot phase the following autumn, rolling out Ariba Guided Buying and S/4HANA Central Procurement to five country operations in Europe and Asia. As expected, the combined use of the two procurement solutions offers significant advantages, such as an intuitive user interface that allows them to order items from predefined catalogues – whether it is hardware, software, office supplies, energy or marketing services – with just a few clicks.

GEA considers it another great success that Guided Buying was able to raise the catalogue quota to 30 per cent related to the number of transactions. At the same time, the new solution ensures transparency, as it provides a comprehensive overview of requesters, requirements, suppliers and prices. Once Guided Buying has been rolled out to all other GEA legal entities, GEA will for the first time have the opportunity to view all indirect procurement processes in a single central system.

After completion of the pilot project, the two new SAP procurement solutions will be rolled out to further 22 legal entities, then step by step across the group. The entire implementation will be supported by apsolut, specialists in Intelligent Spend Management and Digital Business Transformation.

58 INDUSTRIAL TECHNOLOGY

The energy industry is mostly moving away from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources. Wind and solar are growing exponentially and are set to account for nearly 70% of global electricity production in 2050. Transport is being electrified, with 50% of all new cars sold globally expected to be electric by 2033. With the ability to generate your own electric power using technology such as solar panels, consumers are now also becoming electricity producers. All these changes in the energy system have been facilitated by the advances in the digital technology.

Digitalisation is the growing application of information and communications technology (ICT) across the economy, including energy systems. Digitalisation is the use of digital technologies to change a process and enhance efficiency and benefits.

60 INDUSTRIAL TECHNOLOGY
DIGITALISATION IN ENERGY SECTOR: Making energy systems more efficient and sustainable

Digitalisation is an important instrument for the energy transition and an enabler for energy industry to decarbonize and to decentralize. Digitalisation can make energy systems more connected, efficient, resilient and sustainable.

Digital transformation of the energy sector relies on:

Data availability: in 2015, there were about 15.4 billion connected devices. According to Intel, 200 billion devices will be connected by 2020. Following DNV-GL research, the energy industry believes it has the necessary data to enable Digitalisation.

Data Analytics: computing vast amounts of data to produce actionable insights has submitted a rapid progress. Data analysis technologies give meaning to data and allow making decision.

Connectivity: exchange of data between machines or humans and machines, through digital communications networks has become faster and cheaper;

The technology is in place to enable digital transformation, the data exists and also the tools to extract value from it. Rather than seeing innovation and digitalisation as goals and an end, digitalisation should simply be the means to an end. Digitalisation is the means, for instance, to achieve a higher energy efficiency or a long-term business goal.

Digitalisation can help to increase energy efficiency through technologies that gather and analyse data, then use it to make changes to the physical environment. A wide range of data, directly relevant to energy efficiency, are created every second. These are data on energy consumption or related to it such as weather conditions, consumer purchasing decisions and behaviour and they are gathered from sensors, meters and interfaces.

Data analysis technologies combine these large volumes of data and analyse them to produce instructions or advice for energy efficiency improvements.

To improve energy efficiency digital technologies need to trigger changes in the physical environment that reduce energy consumed and require a connection between the digital and physical worlds. Digital data and analysis can be converted into a physical energy-efficient action automatically (machine-to-machine) or manually (human-to-machine).

INDUSTRIAL TECHNOLOGY 61
123-

The increase of energy efficiency is also about capability of future digitalised energy systems to identify who needs energy and deliver it at the right time, in the right place and at the lowest cost.

Further than increasing energy efficiency and cost reduction, several other perceived benefits rank highly for the energy industry, including creating new products, enhancing customer connections, improving safety, productivity, accessibility and sustainability. However, digitalisation is also raising new security and privacy risks, changing markets, businesses and employment.

Enabling successful digital transformation is not only about technology. It requires change in individual and collective mindset geared towards digitalisation. Organizations can invest millions into new systems, processes and technologies but all this investment will be worthless if the company/community structure and culture don’t let the establishing of the digital transformation strategy. Of the $1.3 trillion that was spent on digital transformation in 2018, it was estimated that $900 billion went to waste. According to the Harvard Business Review the reason why some digital transformation initiatives fail is that although most digital transformation initiatives enable efficiency gains and customer intimacy, if people lack the right mindset to change and the current organizational practices are flawed, digital transformation will simply magnify those flaws.

An increased digitalisation by offering a better-quality service, may result in a rebound effect: energy users consume more energy services than they would have without digital technologies. Estimates of the potential for rebound effects stemming from digital technologies vary between sectors, ranging from less than 10% to nearly 30% more energy consumed for some technologies and end uses.

However, some studies suggest the benefits of digitalisation for energy demand and emissions could be nearly 10 times greater than any negative impacts, but more evidence is needed on how digital technologies could combine to deliver system-wide improvements, and how rebound effects might shorten their benefits if the spread of digital devices increases energy use.

62 INDUSTRIAL TECHNOLOGY

Digitalisation technology is maturing, and the energy industry is getting better at building business cases that drive fundamental change and shake-up traditional ways of working. According to the International Energy Agency, the pace of Digitalisation in energy is increasing. Investment in digital technologies by energy companies has risen sharply over the last few years, with global investment in digital electricity infrastructure and software growing by 20% annually since 2014.

Schlumberger Introduces Neuro Autonomous Solutions

Connected, intelligent solutions transform E&P workflows—delivering improved efficiency, consistency and performance with reduced footprint

LUCERNE, September 22, 2022 – Schlumberger has announced the introduction of Neuro* autonomous solutions. These solutions use advanced cloud-based software and connected intelligent systems that create a continuous feedback loop between surface and downhole. This significantly increases the efficiency and consistency of E&P operations while reducing human intervention and footprint. The announcement was made at the Schlumberger Digital Forum, which is taking place this week in Lucerne, Switzerland.

“Neuro autonomous solutions transform hydrocarbon exploration and development workflows for the well construction process today and lay the groundwork for our customers to achieve fully autonomous operations tomorrow,” said Abdellah Merad, EVP, Core Services & Equipment, Schlumberger. “Over the next several years, we will scale autonomous solutions across the energy value chain to revolutionize our industry’s operating model and achieve higher-value outcomes for our customers.”

Schlumberger’s first Neuro solution delivers steering autonomy for directional drilling. The solution uses artificial intelligence with surface and downhole automation workflows to self-determine steering sequences and deliver the well trajectory on plan. As the well is drilled, a real-time continuous feedback loop between an intelligent downhole system and a surface advisory system automates downlinks, reducing control loop time. The instantaneous correlation between downhole and surface actions in accordance with the well plan significantly reduces risk, refines precision and increases efficiency—reducing associated drilling emissions.

Neuro autonomous solutions for directional drilling have been deployed across North America, South America, Middle East and East Asia. The solution has been deployed on more than 50 rigs across 10 countries and executed on 131 customer wells, drilling 612,000 feet. In the Middle East, an operator recently used the solution to autonomously drill a well from 22° to 90° inclination with a curve section measuring 2,500 feet and a 5,400-foot lateral section. Both sections were performed using an autonomous-capable rotary steerable system that contributed to the balance between surface and downhole autonomy enabling the operator to reduce downlinks by 33%, as compared to offset wells drilled in manual mode, while achieving a 13% increase in rate of penetration (ROP).

Olivier Le Peuch on digital’s role in the low carbon energy future

September 22, 2022 – Olivier Le Peuch has been both a witness and a participant in the industry’s digital evolution over his thirty-five-year career at Schlumberger. Today, as the company’s chief executive officer, he sees digital as a great “accelerator” for the industry to address the dual energy access and climate challenges the world is facing.

A pivotal moment

Speaking recently at Schlumberger’s Digital Forum in Lucerne, Switzerland, Le Peuch said “our industry is being called upon to supply the energy that fills structural supply and demand gap and keeps economies growing, while rapidly transitioning the energy system.”

It’s in the context of this dynamic energy landscape that operators must find ways to balance more economic opportunities for producing oil and gas with reducing footprint to meet net zero targets. Le Peuch pointed to digital as key to achieving this mandate for a “higher value, lower carbon energy future.”

“We enter this future better equipped with digital technology, which is a powerful tool for delivering higher value in terms of performance and decarbonization.”

How it’s happening

Our industry’s digital transformation, which has been underway for many years, means that today everything can be connected—people, data and equipment. This is made possible by open platforms, which liberate data, de-silo operations, and enable automation and autonomy to optimize industry workflows that improve efficiency and performance.

Open platforms play another important role: Making multi-stakeholder and industry collaboration possible. This is vital to our industry’s ability to accelerate innovation and decarbonization to succeed in the future low carbon economy.

Today, companies both inside and outside of the industry are joining forces with Schlumberger to do just this.

Working together

At the Digital Forum, we announced our plans to collaborate with Aramco on the development of a digital platform that will provide sustainability solutions for hard-to-abate industrial sectors. The platform will enable customers to measure and report baselines, targets, emissions, offsets and credits, which will help them manage their carbon footprints more effectively.

We also announced our Digital Platform Partner Program and Enterprise Data Solution.

The Digital Platform Partner Program will enable independent software vendors to build new applications and software and offer them to the market on the platform. Customers will be able to access a broad range of interoperable digital solutions, enabling data-driven decision making across the energy value chain and rapidly accelerating the time to value.

The Enterprise Data Solution, powered by Microsoft Energy Data Services, will enable customers to integrate subsurface data with technologies and workflows from multiple vendors. Developed in alignment with the emerging requirements of the OSDU™ Technical Standard—the solution makes data accessible on an unprecedented scale for the global energy industry.

The takeaway

“The long-term competitiveness of our industry depends on our ability to effectively harness technology, data and deeper collaboration,” Le Peuch said.

Digital solutions are the foundation that make this possible. As the industry rapidly moves to a higher value, lower carbon energy future, digital will be both an enabler and an accelerant for our industry to economically produce the energy supply the world needs while meeting crucial net zero targets.

TAQA, ADNOC & Mubadala Enter Binding Agreements for Acquisition of Masdar Stake

Key milestone achieved in building the partnership among three Abu Dhabi national champions that will turn Masdar into one of the largest renewable energy companies in the world and a pioneer in green hydrogen. The new Masdar will support delivery of the UAE’s net zero by 2050 strategic initiative and will be a global champion for clean energy.

Abu Dhabi National Energy Company (TAQA), Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) and Mubadala Investment Company (Mubadala) have entered into binding agreements for TAQA and ADNOC to purchase stakes in Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company (Masdar) from Mubadala.

This is a major milestone towards completing the transaction announced late last year by His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the United Arab Emirates. The partnership sets out to create a global clean energy powerhouse that consolidates the renewable energy and green hydrogen efforts of TAQA, Mubadala and ADNOC under the Masdar brand.

The transaction puts a value for the new Masdar joint ventures at approximately AED 7 billion (USD 1.9 billion) on a 100% equity basis. The binding agreements will see TAQA acquire a 43% controlling stake in Masdar’s renewables business with Mubadala retaining a 33% interest, and ADNOC owning the remaining 24% interest.

Meanwhile, ADNOC will hold a 43% controlling stake in Masdar’s new green hydrogen joint venture, Mubadala will retain a 33% interest and TAQA will hold a 24% effective stake.

As part of the deal TAQA will contribute its rights to a minimum 40% share in future Abu Dhabi renewable projects and green hydrogen projects.

Jasim Husain Thabet, TAQA’s Group Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director, commented: “Today’s signing of binding agreements for this transaction demonstrates how TAQA has firmly established itself as a low carbon power and water champion. At the completion of this transaction TAQA will exceed its 2030 targets of having more than 30% of its generation capacity from renewable energy and will accelerate our future growth plans as the demand for renewable power and green hydrogen projects significantly increase.

80 INDUSTRIAL TECHNOLOGY

Working closely with Mubadala and ADNOC we will transform the energy landscape through Masdar, grounded in collaboration and great ambition to drive forward the UAE’s ‘Net-Zero by 2050 Strategic Initiative’.”

Khaled Salmeen, Executive Director of the Downstream Industry, Marketing & Trading Directorate, ADNOC commented: “Signing of the binding agreements for this landmark transaction marks another important milestone in ADNOC’s ongoing journey to future proof its operations and grow its new energies business. We are excited to join forces with TAQA and Mubadala, consolidating our combined efforts to create a new national champion for renewable energy and green hydrogen. ADNOC has been a reliable supplier of energy to customers around the world for more than five decades and we are confident that this new world-class partnership will continue to position the UAE at the forefront of the global energy transition, while cementing ADNOC’s foray into the international clean energy space.”

Musabbeh Al Kaabi, CEO, UAE Investments of Mubadala Investment Company, commented: “This milestone is a clear testament of Mubadala’s commitment to realizing the UAE’s long-term sustainability ambitions. We established Masdar 16 years ago with the foresight to diversify the UAE’s energy mix and advance the global energy transition. Today’s signing with two of Abu Dhabi’s key energy players, ADNOC and TAQA, further cements Mubadala’s responsible investing strategy and is one step closer to delivering on the UAE’s sustainability aspirations. The new shareholding structure of Masdar solidifies the strategic partnership between Abu Dhabi’s powerhouses, consolidating the UAE’s pioneering position as a forward-looking global energy leader.”

The transaction is still subject to the completion of necessary transaction requirements, including obtaining relevant third party and regulatory approvals, expected to take a number of months.

Increase plant output by 20% without replacing fans

It may happen that you need to increase the output capacity of a fan in order to increase the plant’s productivity.

However, it is not always necessary to completely change the fan with a larger one with a greater installed power.

Starting from an analysis of the initial performance (flow rate and pressure of the fan), with an appropriate study one can in fact find different solutions to obtain the desired increase.

In the last case solved for one of my customers, we managed, for example, to increase the flow rate of extracted fumes by 20%, without replacing the fan and maintaining the same motor power.

Usually, as the flow rate increases, the power input also increases accordingly. The limit in most cases then becomes the power available to the motor.

Most probably you know that by increasing the speed of rotation of the fan, the flow rate also increases. Perhaps you do not know, however, that the power

82 INDUSTRIAL TECHNOLOGY PBN
Diego Perfettibile Co Owner of PBN the industrial fans built to last

input in this case increases much more rapidly. To give you an idea, a 20% increase in rotation speed leads to a 20% increase in flow rate and 73% increase in power.

The mechanical resistance of the fan rotor is also compromised if a certain rotation speed is exceeded. This is why an analysis of the data and advice from a fan expert who - after careful design - can give you the best solution to meet your needs is essential in these cases.

In the case of the customer mentioned above, for example, after measuring the aeraulic characteristics of the system, we found a solution that would allow the target of a 20% increase in flow rate to be achieved at the lowest possible cost.

A new impeller was installed, capable of providing a higher flow rate but with a significantly higher efficiency. In this way, for a 20% increase in flow rate, the output only went up by about 15%.

Obviously, it is not possible to find a solution for all cases. Each situation must be analyzed and studied

in detail in order to guarantee the best result at the lowest cost while maintaining the safety and reliability of the system.

To find out how to increase the productivity of your plant, without completely replacing the fans, request a free consultation from one of PBN’s technicians. www.pbnventilatori.it

Lattice measurements for early and not destructive diagnoses

Figure 1: DifRob®: Prototype for non-destructive and non-invasive on-site lattice measurements.

Figure 2: Example of data collected from a surface as it is with fit and decomposition. The surface effect reduction process is comprised by five processing levels with increasing complexity and refinement.

Origin of the Company and its development XRD-Tools s.r.l. was born as a spin-off of the University of Pisa. Three stakeholders are the team of XRDTools s.r.l. and Giovanni Berti was the inspirer and founder with a large majority. Its academic know-how was released with a specific resolution of the Pisa

University Rector. He owns four families of patents for 56 international grants; it has a continental graphic trademark DifRob® and a national one more. Other advances are underway.

The main product is the robotic diffractometer:

86 INDUSTRIAL TECHNOLOGY

DifRob®. It consists of an operating unit with nine degrees of freedom, control and service electronics; it is mounted on a tracked trolley with three other degrees of freedom and possibility of movement even on pivoting wheels. All this offers great flexibility of use in numerous operational scenarios, where it is necessary to analyze the material of objects in operation (inspection in service by on site XRD).

The instrument collects data on site, useful for qualifying the properties of the materials for use suitability in service.

Geographical context in which it operates Interesting prospects are possible in the Italian, Middle European, USA, East Asia and Middle East markets.

The current size of the company currently allows for operating in three national regions.

Performs lattice measurements. It is an early diagnosis that enables the manager to monitor plants and infrastructures for safe and preventive maintenance interventions.

Recent developments have indicated the path to improve the data collections reliability from surfaces as they are on site. They reduce the historical problem related to the pre-analysis treatment of materials. Treating the materials before analysis inevitably implies losing the qualifying properties for use.

Organizational structure

The realization of the hardware and software are performed partly internally and to a greater extent externally and then assembled.

Both proofs of concept for new applications and measurement services for now stable applications are carried out.

Fields of activity in the NDT

This technology can be exploited in different industrial sectors: mechanics, chemistry, buildings and monuments, cultural heritage, bioengineering and medicine, food, environment, forensic activities and customs controls and other civil and military sectors. Cyclic, generation of new phases, strength of cements and dispersion of microplastics, etc. The diagnostic procedures are aimed at the analysis of materials, the structural integrity and prognostic monitoring checks.

The controls determine the quality of the welds, the roughness of the surfaces, the porosity, the density, the granularity and its dispersion, the composition of the alloys and mixtures, friction, wear. These properties qualify the integrity of the material and originate at the micro-nano-metric scale, where the presence of residual stresses, creeps and microstructures affect the rheology of the lattice to external physical, chemical, mechanical and thermal stresses.
