China: investments and international agreements to deal with growth

Valeria Menichini Journalist

China's oil is talked about not only because it is one of the hot spots in the war with the US, but above all because China's strong expansion is already demanding and will require a lot of oil. China's largest oil company, CNOOC Ltd , announced at the beginning of the year the discovery of a huge crude high quality crude in the Bohai Sea, in northeast China. Furthermore, the company also confirmed its presence in the natural gas area in quantities exceeding 100 billion cubic meters. The deposit - listed as "the largest oil and gas discovery" in the Bohai Bay basin over the past 50 years - could be used by "millions of residents" for "hundreds of years," according to experts. The Bohai Sea area is located just over a hundred kilometers from the Jingjinji region, where gas pipelines already exist that allow gas transportation after extraction. China's initiative to increase capital investment of 2019 in oil exploration by 20%, to $ 77 billion, in order to increase production marks a new strategic direction. The goal is to increase domestic production by 50%, with an increase of over 2 million barrels per day over the next five years. On the other hand, both domestic demand and global oil demand will grow and the current Chinese domestic oil production is not expected to exceed 4 million barrels per day in 2019, while the country imports over 10 million barrels per day to satisfy domestic demand. Only 25 years ago, the Chinese were able to meet all their domestic demand producing 4 million barrels a day. The value of oil for China therefore goes beyond the price on the global market, but instead considers what that oil allows to realize, in fact the Chinese government evaluates the national oil as a derivative of internal GDP. Coal, the main responsible for smog and CO 2 emissions, constitutes 60% of national energy needs, while oil is only 10%.

INDUSTRIAL TECHNOLOGY

OIL AND GAS, PETROCHEMICAL, AUTOMATION

Oil is a strategic asset for China that is worth much more than its price on the world market. And reduced access to oil would be a problem for China. For this reason it has extended its military presence to protect trade routes all over the world as have also been done by the USA and others. The $ 15 billion increase in spending will benefit all oil companies operating in China, including, of course, Schlumberger, Halliburton, Baker Hughes, NOV and others. China has been actively pursuing US shale technologies for over a decade through joint ventures with US companies in US shale basins. In China, the recently announced Shell and Sinopec company will target eastern Chinese fields. A previous company with Hess turned out to be non-commercial.

Meanwhile, Asian power has opened its doors to Saudi countries, in fact Beijing knows that Iran, one of its most important suppliers of crude oil, is flooded with economic sanctions that prevent it from exporting oil freely and that Trump could give in to the temptation to open a war in Tehran. To avoid economic catastrophes, China has benefited by strengthening its diplomatic relations with Saudi Arabia, theoretically one of the main allies of the United States in the Middle East. However, the vision of bin Salman, Ryad's crown prince, is more business-oriented than political ideology, and China is too interesting a partner to be sacrificed in the name of friendship with Washington. China is also a perfect hub from which to expand its tentacles in the rest of Asia, where there is a hunger for crude oil. Saudi Arabia's national hydrocarbon company ARAMCO signed a memorandum of understanding with the Zhejiang Free Trade Zone on 5 September with the aim of expanding its investments and further strengthening itself in the rest of Asia. The agreement consolidates Saudi Aramco's participation in the 400,000 barrels per day refinery from phase III of the Zhoushan Petrochemical Greenfield project and also allows the parties to evaluate potential investment opportunities in other parts of the value chain. These may include refining and petrochemical production, storage and trading of crude oil and natural gas, retail and distribution of petroleum products in the Zhejiang free trade area.

OIL AND GAS, PETROCHEMICAL, AUTOMATION

Last February, Aramco had already purchased a 9% stake in an 800,000 barrels of oil refining plant a day built by Zhejiang Petrochemical, owned by the private company Zhejiang Rongsheng Holding Group. The deal involves a long-term supply of crude oil and the possibility of using Zhejiang Petrochemical's storage facility to serve Aramco's customers in Asia. But the agreement will allow the parties to evaluate Saudi investment opportunities in China's free trade area in some strategic sectors: refining, petrochemical production, oil storage, retail and trade in oil and natural gas. Aramco, among other things, is a real colossus, and having him on his side can only be an advantage. The Saudi company has a production that exceeds 10 million barrels a day, is 100% owned by the Saudi Arabian government and, according to some data, it would be the most profitable company in the world.

Interview with Saipem’s head of the Offshore Drilling Division Marco Toninelli. Industrial Technology Magazine has interviewed Saipem’s head of the Offshore Drilling Division . Marco Toninelli. Mr. Marco Toninelli holds a degree in Civil Engineering from the ‘’Politecnico di Milano’’. He joined Saipem in 1986 occupying various positions, with experiences ranging from offshore construction, civil infrastructures, project management, supply chain management, maintenance engineering and asset management. In September 2006, he took the position of Assets Senior Vice President of Saipem Spa, managing a world- class fleet of construction vessels and onshore equipment at the service of the Oil & Gas Industry. From 2007 to 2011, he was in charge of an investment plan for the renovation of the fleet, with an expenditure value in excess of 8 billion euro. He has served as Chairman of E.R.S. b.v. (Holland), Chairman of S.P.C.M. Lda. (Portugal), Member of the boards of Boscongo s.a.(Congo), Saibos CML Lda (Portugal), Kwanda L.da (Angola), Frigstad Ltd (Singapore), Saipem (Beijing) Technical Services (China). He was also Chairman of Energy Maintenance Services SpA (Italy) from 2003 to 2007 and Chairman of Moss Maritime (Norway) from 2006 to 2008. From 2011 to 2016, he held the position at Eniservizi of Senior Vice President of Real Estate, in charge of development of all new real estate investments. In March 2016, he rejoined Saipem and he is now head of the Offshore Drilling Division.

You rejoined Saipem in 2016 at the beginning of the downturn in the drilling market. What were the main challenges you had to face? Since 2014 we have been through one of the most severe and longest crises for the drilling market and unfortunately it is not over yet. It has forced everybody to rethink in many ways the manner in which we conduct business. In order to remain competitive, we have had to review our processes, optimize our cost structure and, most of all, improve our efficiency across the board of our activities. The best example I like to mention is the drilling campaign of the Zohr field in Egypt. Thanks to the high efficiency of our drillship Saipem 10000, we are proud to have contributed, along with another division of Saipem, to the success of our client in achieving record time from discovery to market of the giant field.

What is the Saipem Offshore Drilling Division’s approach to the new industrial revolution (i.e. Industry 4.0) as regards improving its processes and consolidating its position? And what do you believe will be the impact of rig digitalization technologies on your business? The drilling industry is highly technological and capital intensive. However, it has a reputation of being often conservative toward innovation. I am absolutely convinced that digitalization represents an extraordinary opportunity for innovation in our industry and I am enthusiastic about the possibilities we have in front of us. For this reason, I decided to appoint a digital officer with a team fully dedicated to this task. We have launched a comprehensive program with initiatives including, to name just a few, rig digital twin, predictive maintenance, safety, robotization, operational efficiency, and so forth. Many have passed the phase of Proof of Concept and are now being fully implemented across our fleet. I have no doubt whatsoever that it will have a tremendous positive impact on all our activities.

What is next for Saipem’s Offshore Drilling Division? Are there any interesting projects in the pipeline? And what are your prospects in the Middle East? As I said, the crisis has been severe. However, we have navigated through the storm and have been able to keep on course. Thanks to all the actions I mentioned above, and to the almost full occupation of our fleet, we are very satisfied with the economic results we have delivered. From this standpoint, we intend to consolidate our position, particularly in those regions where we have an historical presence. The Middle East is an area where we have been present for decades and where we definitely intend to remain and serve our clients in the best possible way, perhaps even increasing our presence.

Nine years have passed since the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, the biggest disaster in the history of the offshore oil & gas industry. What lessons have been learnt from this accident? The Deepwater Horizon oil spill was, as you say, an event of enormous proportions which forced the industry into making huge efforts to ensure that a similar disaster could never occur again. In 2011 several major oil companies constituted a consortium with a view to improving response times to subsea oil spills. Saipem contributed to this process and won an international tender with its Offset Installation Equipment (OIE), a unique technology capable of remotely capping a wellhead during an uncontrolled subsea blowout. OIE was designed, manufactured and tested by Saipem, and is an example of how a negative event can give rise to an improvement that benefits the entire sector.

Saipem’s Offshore Drilling Division is equipped with several assets. As a civil engineer, which one is your favorite? From 2006 to 2011 I was Saipem’s Head of Assets. During that period, Saipem invested heavily in the rejuvenation of the fleet for both Drilling and Offshore E&C. It was during that time that, under my supervision, we built the semisubmersible Scarabeo 8 and Scarabeo 9, the drillship Saipem 12000 and the jack ups Perro Negro 6, 7 and 8, as well as the Tender assisted drilling barge (TAD). It was a frantic time and we dedicated passion and hard work to each and every one of these vessels. Asking me which one is my favorite is like asking a parent who his or her favorite child is: he or she may have one, but they would never say it.

That’s where maincubes comes in, with its focus on security and connectivity details in its data centers, allowing manufacturers including for example Daimler – actually a colocation client of maincubes - to securely house and manage their data and further digitize their entire value chains.

maincubes data center in Frankfurt, Germany ‘German-engineered’ data center infrastructure, that’s what maincubes claims to deliver. Industry 4.0 (‘the fourth industrial revolution’) is also a German invention, a strategic initiative from the German government to let manufacturers embrace ‘smart factory’ principles. These German approaches share a common goal: to enhance efficiency, flexibility and time-to-market for manufacturers in a secure way. As an expanding European provider of colocation services with data centers located in Frankfurt and Amsterdam, maincubes tends to label its data center infrastructure as German-engineered. Why? Because their facility designs and technologies being selected are aimed at risk-avoidance, something that can be seen as a typical German feature. maincubes has uniquely deployed extra redundancy in its data center cooling and power (2N and N+1), just to be sure. They also have a wide spectrum of risk-avoiding security measures in place, including bulletproof walls, tailgating technology as well as

MAAG GROUP

The Case For Gear Pumps In Chemical Processing

Maag has developed a complete portfolio of external gear pumps that have been designed to offer the versatility, strength, reliability, safety and flexibility needed for use in chemical-handling applications By Claudio Bonafede Introduction Industrial manufacturing processes that involve the use or creation of chemicals are some of the most critical in the world. They are also some of the most intricate and complex. They typically consist of a series of unit operations that must perform precisely, harmoniously, reliably and safely throughout the entire manufacturing process. Within these unit operations, consistently achieving the safe and efficient handling and transfer of raw materials or finished chemicals along the production line is a daily front-of-mind concern for plant operators in a wide range of industries. To complete these crucial liquid-handling tasks, plant operators rely on industrial pumps. The pumps they use must be able to meet the specific handling characteristics of a dizzying array of fluids. Among these varying characteristics are viscosities from water to molasseslike, wide temperature and pressure ranges, and differing chemical makeups, which can include corrosive, abrasive and potentially hazardous compounds. While certain types of pumps have gained acceptance

48

INDUSTRIAL TECHNOLOGY

OIL AND GAS, PETROCHEMICAL, AUTOMATION

as the best technology in chemical-handling and manufacturing applications – centrifugal designs being the most prominent example – there are other options to consider. This article will illustrate how one type of pump technology – positive displacement (PD) external gear pumps – can offer the consistency, reliability, efficiency and liquid-handling safety to become a first choice for plant operators where chemicals are either made or used in the creation of other end-products. The Challenges For Gear Pumps While gear pumps have been proven in the field to excel in many unique applications, before they can be selected for use, the operator must be fully aware of the characteristics of the production process, as well as the makeup of the raw materials or final chemicals that will be used to complete the process. At their most basic, gear pumps perform well in chemicalbased applications because their mode of operation is simple. The liquid enters through the suction side of the pump and into the openings created by the un-meshing of the gear teeth. The liquid is then conveyed through the cavities around the outside of the gears to the pump’s discharge side. The re-meshing of the gear teeth drives the liquid out of the cavities and into the discharge port. Since gear pumps are PD pumps, the flow rate is theoretically independent of the pressure variations

that can occur upstream and downstream of the pump. However, some volumetric inefficiencies, or product “slip,” are common in all types of PD pumps. That means that if the gear pump is to achieve high differential pressures at the required flow rate, it must overcome the inherent internal slip. There are four main areas of slip: 1) between the gear shaft and bearings; 2) between the gear tips and the pump housing; 3) between the gear faces and the bearing (or bushing) faces; and 4) between the meshing gears. To eliminate these slip areas, optimizing the clearances between all of the aforementioned parts is of paramount importance with lower clearances resulting in reduced slip. The clearances are usually defined by several factors, including temperature, viscosity and the pump’s materials of construction. However, some slip is actually required to ensure proper operation of the pump. This designed-in slippage allows the creation of the amount of lubrication film and hydraulic lift that is required to support the gear shafts in the bearings. The proper selection of the materials that make up the pump is essential. In order to meet a wide range of requirements, several different options of wetted materials that are compatible with a wide variety of corrosive, abrasive and sensitive fluids are readily available. In high-temperature applications, the selection and the design of the pump becomes even more important as different materials have different rates of thermal expansion, which means that the clearances are constantly changing. As previously mentioned, the clearances need to be as small as possible in order to handle the pressure and deliver the required flow rate. In high-temperature applications, different thermal-expansion rates can lead to pump seizure when brought up to process temperature. For this reason, the pumps may not always perform efficiently at temperatures they were not designed for. Liquid viscosity is another factor that must be carefully considered. If the clearances are too small, the internal flow of the pumped fluid will be limited and can lead to bearing overheating due to lack of lubrication. If the clearances are too large, the lubrication-fluid film can collapse, leading to insufficient support and lubrication of the shafts. In those applications where high-viscosity products are involved, the first concern is ensuring that the fluid is flowing into the pump. Special inlet designs can help facilitate liquid flow. Additionally, in high-viscosity applications, the pump must be turning slow enough to effectively allow the fluid to fill the opening cavities of the

NEWS

MAAG GROUP

un-meshing gear teeth. The hydrodynamic performance of the bearings is also directly linked to the internal clearances and an incorrect selection could lead to premature wear of the bearings and failure of the pump. Two final factors that need to be considered in order to optimize gear-pump performance is the design of the gear teeth and, especially with highly viscous products, the sizing of the gear shaft. The design of the gear teeth is essential because the torque applied on the gear shaft and the shearing forces on the gear teeth increase with increasing viscosity and differential pressure. The gear shafts also need to be strong enough to absorb and transmit the torque that is created by the drive. Gear teeth and shaft design become even more important when these conditions are combined with high temperatures since the components will become more susceptible to failure because of a decreasing modulus of resistance. Meeting The Need For more than 90 years, Maag, Oberglatt, Switzerland, a Dover company, Downers Grove, IL, USA, has been considering the challenges inherent in the manufacture and handling of chemical compounds and finished products, and has developed a complete family of external gear pumps that have been designed to overcome those challenges. Conclusion The list of demands related to chemical processing is long and critical. These demands will only be satisfied through the selection and use of the proper pump technology – one that is able to meet the needs of varying pressure, temperature, viscosity and compatibility concerns. Maag, with its long history of gear-pump design and manufacture, as well as its extensive installed base, has worked for many decades to identify and develop the best solutions when external gear pumps are the best choice in crucial chemical-handling and manufacturing processes. About the Author: Claudio Bonafede is Managing Director of Maag Italy and is based out of Maag’s facility in Rozzano, Italy. He can be reached by claudio.bonafede@maag.com. For more than 90 years, Maag, a Dover company, has developed gear-pump technologies that are designed for use in the handling of polymer melts, chemicals and lubricants with varying viscosities and at differing temperatures and inlet/discharge pressures. COSTRUZIONI ELETTROTECNICHE CEAR

Temporary Power Generation Plant In A Desert Environment

The construction of industrial plants requires electrical generation from the beginning of the site installation; this can put, both the end user and contractors, in the conditions to be able to start production activities. Costruzioni Elettrotecniche Cear is able to provide all the necessary assistance both in the feasibility study than execution phase for construction of a temporary or permanent containerized Power Station, powered by generators or by the local electricity provider. Among the many reference projects done, Costruzioni Elettrotecniche Cear has supplied containerized substations associated to generators, necessary to feed the yard area and local operators’ camp built in Libya for the construction of an industrial plant. Specifically, Cear’s supply was in association with a generator manufacturer to provide a temporary Power Station that had to draw energy from the national grid and partly from electric generators. The implementation of the project took into account an installation in a desertic environment nearby the coast with a temperature range from -18 to +50°C with a relative humidity range from 31 to 96%. As this was a necessary installation for site operations, the supply had to be characterized by continuity of service, easy maintenance and high levels of safety assurance for operators. In order to maintain these requirements, Cear studied and provided an integrated “system” both for the distribution and electrical transformation part, as well as plant’s electrical control. The supply consisted of 3

MV/LV/MV containerized transformer substations with a range of 1000 to 4000kVA, that were connected to both the national electricity grid and generators, which powered a 11kV “daisy chain” circuit. In addition to the above “main substations”, the plant supply was completed by No. 6 MV/LV Substations 630kVA, No. 6 MV/LV Substations 1000kVA, a MV/LV substation with two 1000kVA transformers and finally No. 34 Low Voltage auxiliary switchgears for the electrical distribution of the workers’ camp. The coordination and control of the energy supply studied by Cear included the realization of a PLC system equipped with a “user friendly” HMI that it would allow operators to move, with an automatic system, the power supply from the grid to the generators and vice versa, to check diagnostics, to monitor system conditions, to detect any system anomalies and to check electrical parameters on both the Medium Voltage line and Low Voltage line, including both the transformer substations than the generators A complete solution for electrification, complying with extreme environmental and operational conditions that requires flexible deliveries and responses, that Costruzioni Elettrotecniche Cear is able to provide.

SETTIMA MECCANICA

Settima offers engineered screw pumps for oil products in upstream, midstream and downstream, offshore and onshore, since 40 years. Three screw pumps have been on the market for long time and constantly demanding requirements have imposed this technology to improve time after time in order to face higher challenges. Despite that, over the years, the pumping technology of choice, especially Oil & Gas industry, in many fluid-transfer applications has been the centrifugal pump. Today we can confirm that positive displacement triple screw pumps can be much more efficient, reliable and versatile than centrifugal pumps. Screw pumps have experienced advancements in terms of capability of handling various fluids even with higher viscosities. The operating principle of a screw pump, in alternative of a centrifugal pump, involves a volumetrically consistent flow rate regardless of the pumping pressure. Screw pump technology can bring in oil and gas applications various benefits: •Possibility to handle a wide range of flows, viscosities, fluids types and pressures •increasing allowability to handle more and more corrosive fluids •High volumetric efficiencies, leading to reduced operational costs •Almost no mechanical vibration to improve service life •No Noise operation •High level of energy efficiency •Constant and smooth flow, even with varying system backpressures due to viscosity changes •Reduced risk of leakage and of overpressure failure •Self-priming operation and high suction characteristics •High tolerance to entrapped air and other gases •Extremely low pulsation increasing the life of associated fluid-transfer components (piping, hoses, valves, etc.) It is easy now to note why industrial operators have decided more and more to rely on positive displacement screw pumps. To quote Dushyant Mehra, research analyst with Frost & Sullivan, “The primary challenge for oil & gas pump manufacturers is to improve the energy costs and efficiency of their pumps.” This is why the main operational advantages that screw pumps have, transform screw pumps as the most efficient, reliable and versatile alternative to centrifugal pumps in critical liquid-handling applications. SETTIMA Pumps has been a global leader in positive displacement pumping solutions since the last 40 years. With a dedicated initial engineering analysis, trough design layout to final highly precise machining techniques, everything based in Italy, SETTIMA can guarantee a perfectly fit tailored answer, like API676 solutions, to many of the Oil & Gas and Power plant requirements.

ENVIROCAGE BENEFITS •Complete protection from hot surface burns •Reduces cooling costs and reduces temperature of cooling medium. •Reduces burden on cooling system. •Can increase yield when temperature limited. •Obetego will design, fabricate and install our energy efficient system or assist and instruct in the installation of the system. •Enhances product quality or purity •Allows complete visual inspection •Creates ease & more efficent UT inspection •Completely eliminates, not mitigates CUI. •Allows for verification of piping system •Completely reuseable after pipe alterations and maintenance •Reduces labor installation costs •Cools hot flanges while protecting personnel HEAT LOSS HISTORY Years ago many employees of industry burned themselves on the job by coming into contact with hot piping & equipment. The larger companies of industry decided to combat this issue by incorporating standards to apply insulation to anything above a certain temperature to

prevent burns. At the time this was expected to be only the expense of adding insulation to the hot surfaces. This included the material costs and the installation costs. That was also back at a time when cooling water was considered almost free. Now with environmental regulations limiting estuary zones to an intake to discharge temperature differential to only a few degrees is costly to get rid of the excess heat. Every circuit or pipeline that is insulated for personnel protection holds heat in the system. If this circuit is feeding another process that requires cooling, or a circuit that requires cooling, it is financially advantageous to allow any heat to dissipate naturally. The most obvious circuits are systems that have an obvious advantage for cooling like any distillation, alkylation, or cooling water approach (recirculation) line. But its actually all of the systems that lead to all cooling systems. Any product, gas stream, or waste stream that requires cooling, or that burdens the cooling water overall load to the refinery system can be cooled ambiently to a certain degree for not electrical or mechanical cost. This even includes steam trap discharges into a sewer that later requires cutting discharge temperature to

OBETEGO

the waste basin. Crude Oil comes into the refinery via freighter / or pipeline. The first stage in the refinery is usually the Crude distillation. This separates out different product according to their boiling range. The ranges vary from 100F to 1050F Butanes & lighter at the top, light & heavy naphtha, kerosene, light gas oil, atmospheric gas oil, Vacuum gas oil, and vacuum reduced crude. Then some products go through other heated processes. But eventually almost everything including waste products and cooling media goes through a cooling process to get to its final destination, weather this be tank car, rail car, pipeline, barge, river or creek discharge, etc. The temperature for tankage or shippingis usually just below 200F, and the temperature for discharge varies. The overall situation we are reminding is that the refinery and chemical process starts off at a very high temperature and gets cooler and cooler. Perry’s and the Practical Process Engineering manual show that most exchangers, pumps, and fans are used for cooling and not heating. This of course zeros out economizers as a push. VALVES FOR STEAM DRIVEN APPLICATIONS Steam has a good heat transfer property and there are many industrial applications which take advantage of such property. Steam has a lot of benefits including the high usable heat content, a simple production process that don’t need chemicals to occur, the ease of controlling and its cleanliness and odourless. Steam generates power or can be used to get mechanical energy (prime mover). Furthermore, steam can be produced by a variety of methods. Using steam for process heating offers multiple benefits over other heating methods. These benefits include simplicity of the system, high efficiency, and reliability, making steam a popular choice for modern process designers. By regulating steam pressure and flow a state-of-the-art automated valve helps maximize delivery and process efficiencies. Industrial applications that use steam as the energy carrier are very common in power stations, manufacturing plant, the chemical and petrochemical industries etc. The most common applications for steam are, for instance, steam heated processes in plants and factories and steam driven turbines in electric power plants, but the uses of steam in industry extend far beyond this. Some typical applications for steam in industry are heating/sterilization, propulsion/drive, motive, atomization, cleaning, moisturization and humidification. Most applications require some control in the broad sense of the term, and valves for steam play a key role in the process. Steam valves are used to control steam and heated water vapor from the source (boiler) to the application point (heaters). The main application of valves with steam is to reduce the pressure of the inlet steam for process application. Industrial processes frequently use steam at lower pressures because of the higher latent heat which increases process’s energy efficiency and for safety (high pressure steam involves more safety precaution). And because the steam pressure and temperature are related, the temperature is controlled through the control of steam pressure.

Dr. Eng. Mor Nguirane Chemical Engineer

72

Though most types of valves can actively control steam flow, special service conditions exist with steam regarding temperature and pressure. The one described here is based on the valve basic principal.

INDUSTRIAL TECHNOLOGY

OIL AND GAS, PETROCHEMICAL, AUTOMATION

A movable closing component, developed as a plug or a disc, is mounted in a housing to prevent the medium applied to the inlet from exiting. The plug unit also play another important role that consist of throttling/controlling the flow by mean of intermediate positions. Whereas during isolation, the requirements are mainly focused on a permanently good seal, during the controlling, the stability of the plug movement and the flow characteristic come first. The plug/seat area is also exposed to the greatest stresses in the valve, as this is where the flow is at its fastest because of the minute cross-section of the flow. Therefore, the plug/seat must be designed in a such way to stand against the associated force to the flow and to prevent erosion that might be caused by condensation droplets in the saturated steam. The plug/seat must operate safely without any leakage. The plug can be operated manually, via actuators driven by a separate power supply or by the medium itself. Because of the high temperatures in steam applications, the most commonly used type of valves has a metallic plug/seat. The type of the metallic seat/plug depends on the flow and application characteristics. The second important function of the valves, ensuring that there is a leakproof seal keeping the medium in, is given by the body components, the seals and the stem guide. The stem guide is the most demanding in terms of design and construction of the valves. The body and the accompanying seal are static parts. The stem guide is subjected to dynamic stresses caused by the movement of the stem which can be axial, radial or a combination of both. There are three different designs of stem seal to use in steam and condensate applications: •Gland Packing: the packing material made of pure graphite is pretensioned using packing fixtures and distributes the resultant pressure on all sides, thus sealing the gap between the stem and the bonnet towards the outside. •V-ring stem seal are easy to maintain as the PTFE V ring units are permanently pretensioned by means of spring that ensure a constant seal. PTFE V-ring seal has the limit of the service temperature of 220°C. •Bellow seal provides a permanently leakproof and free maintenance stem seal, even at high temperature. Austenitic stainless steel is the most used material for this kind of seal. Depending on its design, the bellow seal simultaneously protects the stem guide from the medium and prevent wear from dirt particles.

A great variety of valves type, as the below ones, follow this basic. Regardless of the function of the valve (control, stop, safety etc..) the most commonly used steam valves type are the following: •Ball valves provide tight shut-off and predictable control. They have a high range of use due to the design of the regulating element, without the complications of side loads typical of butterfly or globe valves. Advantages include ease of operation and high flow, high pressure, and high temperature capabilities. A disadvantage is its low cleanliness. •Butterfly valves control the flow of steam with a disk which turns on a diametrical axis inside a pipe, or by two semi-circular plates hinged on a common spindle, permitting flow in only one direction. They are used as throttling valves to control flow. Butterfly valves offer a rotary stem movement of 90° or less in a compact design. Unlike ball valves, butterfly valves do not have pockets in which fluids and gas may become trapped when the valve is closed. •Globe valves are linear motion valves with rounded bodies. They are widely used in industry to regulate fluid flow in both on/off and throttling service. Advantages include precise throttling and control, as well as high-pressure limits. Disadvantages include poor cleanliness. •Gate or knife valves are linear motion valves in which a flat closure element slides into the flow stream to provide shut-off. Gate valves are usually divided into two types: parallel and wedge-shaped. Parallel gate valves use a flat disc gate between two parallel seats (upstream and downstream). Knife valves are of this type, but with a sharp edge on the bottom of the gate. Large sizes are commonly available. Disadvantages include pressure limitations, lack of cleanliness, and low shut-off. •Diaphragm valves use a 'pinching' method to stop the valve flow using a flexible diaphragm. One of the major advantages of using diaphragm valves is that the valve components can be isolated from the process fluid, making them ideal for sanitary applications. Diaphragm valves are limited to a maximum temperature of 230° C.

74

INDUSTRIAL TECHNOLOGY

OIL AND GAS, PETROCHEMICAL, AUTOMATION

For a steam valve to perform properly, a proper selection must be done. Based on applications and plant knowledge, several factors must be taken into consideration when specifying a steam valve. The requisite function (control, safety, isolation etc..) and the performance permissible limits/tolerances of the valve, the medium (steam only, condensate only etc.) and its quality, the working environment, the operating pressure and temperature, the connection and actuations mode, and other service variables must be accounted for. Actuators, connection, and valve body and component material are selected after an appropriate valve type and size are determined by desired pressure and flow requirements. Typical connections for steam valve are threaded, flanged, welded or compression fitted. Materials of construction can be aluminium, brass, bronze, cast iron, copper, steel, and stainless steel. The calculation formula necessary for valve sizing are reported mainly by a vast number of specified standards and regulations, as well as the pertinent technical documentation. For example, DIN EN 60534 standards is applicable to stop valves and controls valves, DIN EN 12952-10 and DIN EN 12953-8 standards apply to safety valves.

Oil and Gas Climate Initiative sets sights on carbon capture

October 02, 2019 - New York: The Oil and Gas Climate Initiative (OGCI), a group of leading energy companies, recently introduced new measures to address climate challenges at its fifth annual conference in New York and said it was making progress curbing methane emissions. Among the new efforts is one to spur large-scale investments in carbon capture, use and storage (CCUS) systems, with an early goal of doubling the amount of carbon currently stored globally before 2030. CCUS is a central part of efforts to achieve net zero emissions. “We are committed to helping to meet society’s lower carbon goals while reliably meeting the energy needs of billions of people for decades to come and leading at the cutting edge of technology,” said Saudi Aramco chief technology officer Ahmad O. Al-Khowaiter, who participated in working sessions at the event. “Our involvement with the OGCI demonstrates this commitment.” Reducing methane intensity, greenhouse gas, and more OGCI also said its members are committed to reducing the amount of methane and carbon emissions in their upstream oil and gas operations, and supporting appropriate governmental policies that assign a value to carbon as a way to lower emissions. Members have already reduced their collective methane intensity by 9% and are on track to meet a cumulative 20% reduction by 2025, the group said. OGCI is now working on a target to reduce its collective average carbon intensity as well. Reducing carbon intensity involves actions such as improving energy efficiency, minimizing flaring, upgrading facilities, and co-generation. Saudi Aramco, a founding member of OGCI, has been a leader in lowering carbon intensity from oil and gas operations, from the wellhead to the refinery gate. The carbon intensity of our Upstream operations is the lowest in the industry at 10 kilograms of carbon dioxide equivalent per barrel of oil equivalent, according to a Stanford University-led study published in the journal Science. Also, based on third-party verification of our greenhouse gas emissions, our methane intensity last year was just .06%, which is also one of the lowest in the industry. OGCI members have set up a venture capital fund with more than $1 billion that has invested in startup companies that are developing, scaling, and deploying technologies that reduce greenhouse gas emissions. It has made seven new investments in the past year in companies with impactful technologies that span the energy value chain. Fifteen companies are in the portfolio. OGCI is also starting a Kickstarter crowdfunding program to facilitate putting CCUS technologies into operation in industrial hubs in the U.S., U.K., Norway, the Netherlands, and China. More broadly, OGCI is working with 11 countries supporting the Clean Energy Ministerial CCUS initiative to create a global commercial carbon storage industry at the scale needed to meet the goal of the Paris Agreement. OGCI has also joined the Natural Climate Solutions Vision Initiative convened by the World Economic Forum and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development.

Plug and Play, What benefits for the industry of the future? A new standard revolutionizes the Industry 4.0

Leonello Trivelli PhD in Economics & Management at Università di Pisa (UNIPI)

The internet of things’ industry is revolutionizing the manufacturing system of our company day by day. If until not long time ago the innovations of the 4.0 industry seemed too far from being considered a solution to a stale production processes, today instead we are in a decisively more open scenery towards new technologies, also thanks to the awareness on the part of the industries regarding the big changes in mass consumption. The demand of consumer goods and services is increasingly meeting an unexpected change: consumer habits are always evolving faster, and the industries are looking for structures and models that allow them to support a flexible production, capable to respond to market’s fluctuating trends. As a matter of fact, we are witnessing a shift from mass production processes toward mass customization processes. The customers’ needs seem more fragmentated and the life cycle of the products has been drastically shortened. As a result, manufacturing companies are also more interested in the possibilities of restructuring. The cornerstone technologies of industry 4.0 adapt well to this necessity, precisely because they succeed to create a more efficient manufacturing ecosystem; but what happens when, to meet the need of flexibility, the systems and the technologies need to be cooperated? The concept of flexibility depends above all on the configuration efforts required to restructure the manufacturing plants and, if considering the large number of new technologies is use, we realize that to able different systems to communicate is something complex and that risks delaying the manufacturing process reconversion.

Currently, most of the production facilities use proprietary automation technologies, which are designed and programmed with communication protocols optimized for a limited area of application. Consequently, today's automated manufacturing systems appear to be less flexible, due to the great efforts required for the configuration process. The complexity of the process determines the capacity of the manufacturing plant to accommodate changes in the productivity scheme. To better understand what happens in this context, one can just imagine how the mouse-computer connection process was done until recently. In order to allow the two devices to communicate, drivers had to be installed, a cumbersome process full of obstacles had to be followed and essentially it was demanding in terms of time. Today's vision is to offer companies a system much more similar to connecting a USB device to a PC, a plug-and-play system. Achieving this degree of efficiency is possible, and the interest in the academic research environment has certainly increased in this field. The requirement is to find a global system for each machine, software or interface that ensures the rate of production to remain constant or even more efficient.

Standard’s unification is the key to growing the future industry Nowadays, around the world more than ten machine languages are used, which makes challenging the creation of a global communication system between machines. The OPC UA, which stand for Open Platform Communication Unified Architecture, is a standard that is already allowing the technologies that do not communicate and the diversified communication protocols to connect quickly. In fact, it is an open machine to machine communication protocol for industrial automation that facilitates the exchange between automated systems; the OPC UA can be used on all software systems, such as Windows, Mac, Linux, Android and is therefore highly scalable, i.e. usable both on minimal embedded systems and on larger cloud systems.

92

INDUSTRIAL TECHNOLOGY

OIL AND GAS, PETROCHEMICAL, AUTOMATION

The protocol can be used, among other things, by closed networks or even through the Internet, because within its architecture there are control, authentication and encryption systems. The OPC UA, thanks to its ability to favour the exchange for industrial communication, is confirming itself as a key element for the development of the Industry 4.0. Currently the sectors that have benefited greatly from OPC UA are above all the automotive, food and beverage, oil and gas, energy, packaging and many others that are now starting to experiment with this new approach.

Yokogawa supports world-first implementation of Module Type Package in an industrial environment September 18, 2019 – Tokyo: In a pilot project initiated by specialty chemicals company Evonik, Yokogawa worked with other automation vendors to utilize Module Type Package (MTP) standards for the first time in a commercial industrial environment. The pilot project was launched in summer 2018 and carried out in a world-scale amino acid plant operated by Evonik in Singapore. Following the system integration, the package units were successfully commissioned in May 2019. The modern chemical industry faces multiple challenges, such as increased production flexibility and a shorter time to market. To address these challenges, NAMUR, the German body representing users of automation systems in process industries, developed MTP to solve communication and connectivity problems in highly adaptive, modular plants*. MTP provides a standardized, non-proprietary description of process modules or package units to ensure efficient integration into automation systems and save users time and money. Yokogawa has been actively involved in the NAMUR MTP project. Evonik, ENGIE, Siemens, and Yokogawa collaborated on the integration of a chiller package unit into a conventional production plant by means of MTP. This is the first practical application of MTP standards in an industrial environment (Figure). The MTP integration comprised human machine interface (HMI) and communication interface aspects.

Fig.: Workflow for integrating a package unit in an existing DCS via MTP

The existing Yokogawa distributed control system (DCS) was connected to a Siemens programmable logic controller (PLC) via the OPC UA communication protocol, made possible by a Yokogawa-developed MTP import tool based on Automation Markup Language. The chilling process was initially simulated on the PLC and could be monitored on the MTP operating screen of the DCS. Commissioning was subsequently carried out successfully at the Evonik production site, demonstrating the practical benefits of the MTP standard.

How Servo Motors Are Useful In Robotics Applications

Robotic applications that require precision positioning implement servo motors. Robots perform a wide number of tasks like moving from one place to other at a certain speed, pick up objects from a specific point and place it at another, and other such functions that demand accuracy. Servo motors help them to achieve this target. In this article, we talk about the servo motors, their working, and how they are used in robotics. Understanding Servo Motor Servo motor is an electronic device that converts rotational motion into linear motion. It is one of the main components used for industrial motor control. Also known as a servo, it uses a sensor in order to measure position, velocity, and torque of the motor at any given instance. The servo circuitry is built inside the motor unit and has a shaft fitted with a gear that can be positioned as needed. Working of a Servo Motion controller sends a signal to a servo and depending on the pulse width modulation (PWM), it rotates at a certain angle. When at rest, the output spline of a servo is 0 degree. The pulse width of 1.5ms makes it rotate by 90 degrees in one direction while that of 1ms makes it rotate 180 degrees backward to the starting position. The position of the output spline is measured by a potentiometer. When the desired position is reached, the power supply is cut, and the motor holds that position until the next signal. Proportional operation is an important feature. If the motor stops at 180 degrees while it needs to be at 0 degrees, the movement is swift. However, if it stops closer to 0 degrees, it will move slowly to get there. Why robotics implements servo motor? 1-Servo motors are small and powerful. They can be easily programmed and allow almost perfect repeatability of motion. 2-They are easy to control. It is a combination of mechanical and electronic modules and has potentiometer to measure the feedback. 3-It is very easy to make your own servo with the help of gears, a motor, a basic comparator circuit, and some other components. 4-The precision delivered by a servo is incredible because of the ability to control angle based on a feedback system. 5-A servo can be used to make humanoids, bipeds, hexapods, and so on. They are also useful in controlling a camera position, 6-As compared to the stepper motors, they are more reliable and lighter. The only limitation is their range as only a few servos have a 360-degree non-continuous operation. Continuous rotation servos use encoders instead of potentiometer, which is a lined sheet of substance and photo-emitter detector pair. Application of Servo in Robotics 1- Robotic Welding: Servo motors are instrumental in actuating movement and adding dexterity to a robotic welding arm. 2- Robotic Vehicles: The autonomous vehicles used to disarm and dispose of bombs use servo motors in their steering system. Robotics use servo motors for works that are repetitive in nature or involve tasks that are beyond the physical limitations of a human being. Precision is the key and therefore, the inevitable dependency of robotics on servos. Minimal downtime during modification: Extensive modernisation of drives and controls of a cut-to-length line with eccentric shears

With over 75 years of know-how, MCB offers an extensive and complete portfolio of steel, stainless steel, aluminium and non-ferrous metals. In May 2017, the MCB Nederland B.V. branch needed to modernise a plant because the manufacturer of the plant no longer provided the necessary service for the installed controls and the procurement of spare parts became increasingly difficult. DAA DELTA Technik GmbH, a subsidiary of the b+s group, was therefore commissioned to modernise the drives and controls of the DE003 cut-to-length line with eccentric shears. After the design phase, the automation experts carried out a comprehensive process analysis. All functional sequences, the entire data exchange between the systems and the operating sequences were recorded along the production line. Particularly critical process parameters were recorded and analyzed using an iba PDA system (Process Data Acquisition), which was specially installed for this purpose. In this way, the new drives and controls as well as the associated software could be tailored to the process requirements in the best possible way in advance of the rebuild. “Our cut-to-length line DE003 is a key line of our factory,” reports René Beerkens, Manager Technical Service at MCB. “The technical expertise of DELTA Technik convinced us from the beginning. The presented modernisation concept was based on our ideas regarding the most modern technology, open systems, very good ease of operation and maintainability, and the best possible shutdown and modernisation scenario”. The modernisation of the cut-to-length line was carried out in two steps. Due to the foresighted and efficient planning of DELTA Technik first material could be run at the beginning of the second week of the first modernisation step. The cutting qualities and cutting accuracies were always of sales quality from the beginning of the commissioning. These extremely positive experiences prompted MCB and DELTA Technik to significantly reduce the planned duration of the second rebuild stage.

DAA DELTA Technik GmbH, a subsidiary of the b+s group, was commissioned by MCB Nederland B.V. to modernise the drives and controls of the DE003 cut-to-length line with eccentric shears

The cabinets of the cut-to-length line DE003 at MCB are installed in a container with cabinets on both sides. The space is limited and accordingly difficult were the disassembly of the existing cabinets and especially the insertion and installation of the new cabinets.

First modification phase with replacement of the control panels The first modernisation step included the regenerative rectifier unit of the eccentric shear, the capacitor bank for buffering the DC link voltage, the two inverters of the two shear motors, the controls of the eccentric shear and the drive controls of the entire cut-to-length line, which were still running on a Simadyn D platform. “In this phase we had to replace complete cabinets,” explains Frank Mehlich, Managing Director of DAA DELTA Technik GmbH. “The cabinets of the cut-to-length line DE003 at MCB are installed in a container with cabinets on both sides”. Accordingly, the space is limited and accordingly difficult were the disassembly of the existing cabinets and especially the insertion and installation of the new cabinets. DELTA Technik solved this problem with the help of a rail system specifically designed for the space of the cabinet container. Thus, the new cabinets could be placed as a prefabricated and tested unit in front of the container on the rails, to be then "simply" inserted into the container. The disassembly and assembly of the cabinets took only a few days. Parallel to this, the hardware of the drive controls of the cut-to-length line was modified. This was followed by the installation of the new software for the drive controls and the new software for the eccentric shear. Afterwards the I/O-Check could be carried out and the cold commissioning started. “The special challenge of controlling an eccentric shear lies in the cutting process. The eccentric shear can be operated in synchronous, over- or under-synchronous mode,” explains Mehlich. “In synchronous operation, the average speed of the eccentric shear is equal to the material speed, slower in over-synchronous operation and faster in under-synchronous operation. The latter is necessary, for example, for very short plates.” In addition, the eccentric shear can be operated in a start-stop mode for the production of very long plates. In this mode, the eccentric shear is accelerated from a standstill, then synchronized to material speed, accelerated away from the material after the cut and finally positioned on the stop position.

Second rebuild phase with component based modernisation The second step of the modernisation of the cut-to-length line included the rectifier unit of the line drives and the inverters of the line drives, the levellers, the trimming shear, the scrap chopper and the stacking machine, as well as the converters of all other speed-controlled drives, such as, for example the gap and tilt adjustments of the levellers, the width adjustment of the trimming shear, the side guides and the length stops. “The shutdown started on a late Friday afternoon and lasted until the following Sunday,” says Mehlich. “Afterwards, the I/O-Check could be carried out, the inverters and converters were parameterised and the cold commissioning started.” The implementation in this step was based on the replacement of components in the existing cabinets, since the components are distributed in several cabinets. I.e., the components to be replaced were removed from the existing control panels in the cabinet container and the new components installed at their locations. Since the new components deviated in size and in the location of their cable terminals from the old components, extensive customisation work, especially wiring work, became necessary. After the modernisation of the drives and controls of the cut-to-length line, the line is now equipped with advanced automation technology. “We only use components of well-known manufacturers that are freely available on the market,” explains Mehlich. “When implementing the drive- and control-software, DELTA Technik attaches the utmost importance to a clear structure of this software in order to provide customers with the simplest possible maintenance of their lines”. All software is open and freely accessible to the maintenance personnel. Reduced plant downtime and prompt commissioning The originally scheduled shutdowns for the modernisation of the cut-to-length line in two steps were significantly reduced by DELTA Technik. Contrary to the original plan to carry out the installation work over a several-week shutdown in a one-shift scheme, MCB and DELTA Technik agreed on a three-day shutdown with a three-shift scheme. This was done against the background of a very high production utilization of the cut-to-length line and the very good experiences made with the first modernisation step. Further optimisation work was virtually unnecessary. Nevertheless DELTA Technik carried out a corresponding production support after the completed modernisation.

This figure shows the simulation of a start-stop cut. Shown are the speed of the shear motors [1/min resp. rpm] and the horizontal and vertical speeds of the eccentric shear [m/min]. The horizontal speed vx synchronized to a material speed of 80 m/min can be clearly seen during the cut. The resulting speed of the eccentric shear n_mot is strongly nonlinear shortly before and during the cut.

With the successful modernisation of the drives and control systems, MCB now has again a high-precision, highly productive, future-proof and easy-to-maintain cut-to-length line DE003. “Our expectations were fulfilled in every respect and often even exceeded,” Beerkens sums up. “The line shutdown could even be significantly reduced compared to the original planning. Our operators took over the modernised line almost intuitively without significant instruction. From the beginning of commissioning, good quality sheets were produced. Due to the excellent preparation, the line was already at full production level again for the planned production start”. Thanks to the positive experiences, a modernisation of the DE004 cut-to-length line at MCB under the supervision of DELTA Technik is also planned.

Enabling low emission applications of natural gas: MILD and OXY-fuel combustion

Matteo Pelucchi Assistant Professor Department of Chemistry, Materials and Chemical Engineering Politecnico di Milano, Milan, Italy

112

Forecasting the global energy demand is extremely important for future energy policies and security. Considering various energy scenarios [1], the role of natural gas in shaping future energy demand will be significant, due to its environmental advantages and versatility relative to other combustible fuels. Natural gas is indeed the cleanest within fossil fuels, as it emits the lowest carbon dioxide per unit of energy. Despite its lower carbon density compared to other fuels, its consumption is growing steadily by 1.6% in recent years, and its overall usage is expected to grow as much as 45% by 2040. The wide utilization of natural gas for combustion applications motivates the renewed interest in improving the fundamental understanding of its combustion behavior to enable better energy efficiency and emission reduction. A large part of our understanding comes from the development of high-fidelity chemical kinetic models hierarchically covering hydrogen, syngas and methane combustion. Conventional combustion applications (e.g. house and industrial burners, gas turbines) cover wide ranges of pressures up to 100 atm and low to high temperature combustion (500-2500 K) for different fuel/air stoichiometries. Over the last decades, combustion studies have focused on the reduction of pollutant emissions, including NOx, SOx, CO2, CO, volatile organic components, and soot. Continuous advancements in control technologies have resulted in emission reduction and clearly demonstrated that efficiency improvements are the most attainable and cost-effective approaches. However, the long-term solution for decreasing combustion-generated pollution would require a larger reduction than that achieved only by efficiency improvements. For this reason, the development of industrial burners with low or “near-zero emissions such as those of interest for MILD (Moderate or Intense Low Oxygen Dilution) [2], FC (Flameless Combustion) [3,4], HiTAC (High Temperature Air Combustion) [5], HiCOT (High Temperature Combustion Technology) [6], CDC (Colourless Distributed Combustion) [7], LTC (Low Temperature Combustion) [8], ULC (Ultra lean combustion) [9], and OXY-fuel combustion [10] has attracted the strong interest of industries and policy makers.

INDUSTRIAL TECHNOLOGY

OIL AND GAS, PETROCHEMICAL, AUTOMATION

Within the CLEAN-gas Marie Curie Innovative Training Network, supported by the European Commission through the Horizion 2020 work programme, Bagheri et al. at Politecnico di Milano devoted efforts [11, 12] to extending the reliability of chemical kinetic models to conditions relevant to unconventional applications such as MILD and OXY-fuel combustion. Historically, in fact, a lower degree of attention has been paid to the chemistry governing these unconventional technologies. MILD combustion takes place by preheating the reactants at a temperature higher than auto-ignition and by a very high dilution [13]. In fact, through the control of the maximum temperature employing exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) and the extension of the reaction zone [14, 15], MILD combustion ensures stability while remarkably reducing NOx emission. The determination of the MILD regime is still ambiguous, although numerous studies have been devoted to the classification and characterization of its operating conditions. De Joannon and co-workers at the Institute for Combustion Research of the Italian CNR have been long leading the experimental investigation of MILD combustion using Jet and Flow Stirred Reactors (JSR) as well as cyclonic burners [16-19] coupled with accurate diagnostics to track the chemical evolution of the process. One well-known definition of MILD combustion is based on the initial temperature (Tin), the auto-ignition temperature (TAuto), and the temperature increase during combustion (∆T). A regime is defined as MILD if Tin > TAuto > ∆T. MILD combustion is neither a diffusion flame nor a deflagration or detonation. It can be considered as a super diluted explosion or a continuous auto-ignition/explosion. The fluid-dynamic conditions and thermodynamic constraints under which MILD combustion develops are quite straightforward. In fact, there is no need of back-mixing for flame stabilization, and the maximum temperature of the MILD Combustion processes is usually lower than 1600-1700 K, strongly reducing the formation of NOx. The mixing among fuel, oxidizer, and products streams are a crucial feature: the forced internal recirculation of the combustion products, which mix with the fresh mixture, supplies an adequate amount of enthalpy to reach the ignition temperature. OXY-fuel combustion is one of the most relevant technologies, also in light of the strong interest in CO2 capture and storage in power generation plants. OXY-fuel is implemented by burning the fuel with nearly pure oxygen diluted with a large amount of recycled flue gas [20]. Various forms of OXY-fuel combustion have been used in different applications even before the concern over CO2 sequestration raised in the world energy scenario. Figure 1 schematizes operating conditions for MILD and OXY-fuel combustion in terms of oxygen concentration and reactants preheating temperature.

Oxidizer preheated

Zone I is the so-called air combustion and the air-like OXY-fuel combustion zone, which involves a ~ 60-80% of EGR. In such a way, the charge usually contains less than ~ 21% oxygen, and the flame temperature is lowered [21]. Zone II is the oxygen-enriched combustion area, where oxygen concentration is significantly higher than 21%. Thus, the oxygen-enriched combustion features a higher sensible enthalpy and a higher flame temperature. Zone III is the full OXY-fuel combustion, where pure oxygen is used as the oxidizer. In this regime, the dilution is reduced to zero, and the pure oxygen highly intensifies the flame structure and the maximum temperature [22]. Finally, zone IV depicts high-temperature OXY-fuel combustion and HiTAC that can be achieved by using highly preheated oxidizer. It should be noted that MILD combustion is also embedded in this zone where stable combustion is still attainable with oxygen mole fraction significantly lower than 21%. From a chemical kinetics viewpoint, a few general features have been pointed out in the studies by Bagheri et al. [11, 12]: • CO2, and in particular H2O, content of exhaust gases reduce the system reactivity. This is mostly due to chemical effects related to enhanced third body collisional efficiencies (e.g. H+O2+M=HO2+M) favoring chain termination over branching pathways. The inhibition effect vanishes for increasing pressure, as expected from the rate constant approaching the high-pressure limit. • The chemical effect of H2O gradually vanishes at high temperatures (1300-1400 K) in the flow reactor. This behavior is due to the transition to a hot ignition regime, occurring according to the sequence HO2‹–›H2O2+M‹–›OH+OH+M. • H2O and CO2 contained in exhaust gases greatly inhibits flame propagation. CO2 has a greater impact in this case. Reasons for such evidences originates both from thermal effects in the case of water, and a combination of thermal and radical scavenging effects in the case of CO2. • The effect of CO2 addition on methane ignition delay times at high temperatures is very marginal as methane chemical stability (i.e. high energy barriers for initiation reactions) does not allow to affect ignition chemistry. • Reliability of kinetic models, could benefit from a more fundamental, a priori, evaluation of collisional efficiency of relevance in third body reactions that are largely responsible of chain termination.

ULTRA POMPE

Ultra Pompe: Our History Our Strength

ULTRA POMPE S.r.l., founded in 1957, was one of the first Italian firms that completely design, produce and test external gear pumps in its own workshops. ULTRA’s success is based on satisfying customer requirement through efficient manufacturing and by providing quality products and competitive pricing. ULTRA POMPE know how and experience has been handed down from one generation to the next. Due to this reason they have accumulated a lot of direct experience in the last sixty years. ULTRA POMPE maintains a large inventory of standard spare parts and unassembled pumps in its own stock, allowing us to quickly provide complete pumps or replacement spare parts for customer emergency. Compact enough to quickly provide innovative custom designs, but large enough to manufacture high volumes in a short time, Ultra Pompe invests every year in new technology for the automatization of its production lines. At today, each machinery in our factory has at least one automatic backup in addition to one controlled manually. This allows us to avoid any production delays caused by machinery crashes and to meet promised delivery. ULTRA POMPE carries on in its own premises the whole of mechanical processing, gear cutting included, thus achieving an unparalleled quality standard of the finished products. Continually updating out technology and products designs allows ULTRA POMPE to provide the right gear pump or system for a variety of processes and liquid, semi-fluid or emulsions. Using of UNI/ISO/ ANSI/ DIN/MEC dimension significantly increase the possibility to meet all customer requests. resumed in three main phases: Suction, Delivery and Discharge. Into a gear pumps the two rotors, that are respectively called driving and driven rotor, are seated in a body that round them from all side. On the both sides of the mesh zone of the teeth there is a hole in the body of the pump. These holes are respectively called suction and discharge. Spinning the rotors the fluid is moved, through the chambers between the teeth of the rotors and the body, from the suction side to the discharge side. Fluid does not pass through the meshing zone of the gears due to small tolerances. A back-flow of the fluid is blocked by the contact of the teeth of the two rotors in the meshing zone. ADVANDAGE Gear pumps need a lesser NPSH and have better properties of delivery repeatability. Gear pumps, being rotary volumetric pumps, are the best metering pumps, since their delivery depends directly on the revolutions rate. Also gear pumps will not generate flow pulsations, as standard metering pumps do, making the media flow constant. Eni diathermic oil: a reliable solution to transfer heat for your industrial processes Author: Paolo Muscetta Development & Technical Assistance Industrial Lubricant Manager Lubricants Business Unit Eni Refining & Marketing Diathermic fluids are used as means for transferring thermal energy produced in a burner (source) to one or more users in a wide variety of industrial sectors such as chemical plants, textiles, food processing, marine applications, wood processing, production of plastics and rubbers, metal processing, paper, construction materials, electric radiators or in all those processes operating in a wide range of temperatures. The transfer of thermal is performed in a safer and efficient way through a diathermic fluid rather than by the use of steam, electricity or through direct flame contact, that is why all industrial sectors are mainly oriented towards heat transmission systems of indirect type. The most common diathermic fluid, less expensive and with high efficiency in heat transmission is water. Unfortunately, water has a very limited range of operative temperatures, indeed, in nonpressurized systems, the working temperature must be within the range 0 ° C (freezing point) and 100 ° C (boiling temperature at atmospheric pressure). In applications where the temperature range is more extended, other fluids have to be considered. In particular, for cooling system applications requiring temperatures lower than the water freezing point, the halogenated hydrocarbons, ammonia or mixtures of water and glycols are used as chilling fluids. In case of temperature range from -10 ° C to 410 ° C, the most suitable products are synthetic “aromatics”, they consist of benzene-based structures and include the diphenyl oxide/biphenyl fluids, the diphenylenthanes, dibenzyltoluenes, and terphenyls. The main advantage of the synthetics over mineral oils is that they guarantee safe operation with temperatures up to 400°C, but they have a very high cost, around three times higher than mineral oil. In the most common applications with operating temperature up to 340 °C, mineral oils are general used provided the system is pressurised with a nitrogen blanket. The choice of using a mineral oil as a thermal energy carrier arises from the need to have a fluid at relatively low cost with good performance that does not require a complex plant layout. The mineral heat transfer fluids are generally suitable for operating temperature from -18 ° C to 340 ° C (film temperature) at atmospheric or higher pressures. In these operating conditions the oil remains in the liquid phase and this allows to avoid the expensive pressurised system necessary to control the vapour, moreover the mineral

oil guarantees a high thermal transmission coefficient (from 300 to 1700 W / m2 K in forced conduction regime) that allows to downsize the exchange surface obtaining a cost reduction. Moreover, a heat transfer mineral oil formulated with highly refined base stock shows a good thermal stability, not corrosive properties, allowing the lubrication of the mechanical parts. Mineral heat transfer fluid: formulation & Monitoring In the formulation phase of a new heat transfer fluid, the choice of the mineral base oil is crucial to obtain a high performance product, during its lifetime the oil is subjected to a severe thermo-oxidative stress, so the target is to formulate a product having a long lifetime avoiding rapid aging; for this purpose, due to their very low olefin content, highly paraffinic base oils are generally preferred, whilst concerning additives, antioxidants and metal deactivators are typically preferred. A big impact on heat transfer lifetime is given by the operative conditions such as maximum operating temperatures, type of flow (laminar or turbulent) and plant layout (open or closed). For example, the presence of de-aeration/ expansion vessel blanketed with inert gas ensures the removal of entrained air, vapour and light fractions prolonging the lifetime of the oil. Eni can count on its own R&D activities and field experience for more than 30 years that has allowed to keep its traditional product line (Eni Alaria) always updated with current technological developments. Eni can timely provide technical assistance to support the customer: -choosing the proper oil according to layout plant and working temperatures; -backing up in plant design providing the key features related to the heat transfer (density, viscosity, specific heat, thermal conductivity, Prandtl number); -developing the guideline to manage the oil charge in the correct way (sampling scheduling, oil parameters, threshold limits); -suggesting the right action related to oil charge status (top up, replacing, filtering, flushing). The support in the charge monitoring is important not only to ensure the best performance, such as the control of impurities, the presence of water, the formation of carbon residue, but even more fundamental for the safety of the plant, the fire and explosion hazard that could occur if the charge monitoring is not carried out in correct way. When heat transfer fluids degrade, they form a mixture of high-boiling polymeric compounds “high boilers” and volatile low-boiling compounds “low

lubricants boilers” as showed in typical degradation reaction: 2C12H10- C18H14 + C6H6 The presence of high boilers has an autocatalytic effect on degradation and it determines an increase of viscosity and the formation of carbon residues in presence of oxygen at higher temperature as for the reaction: C12H10 +1/2 O2 12C + H2O + 4H2 The presence of low boilers can lead to a vapour lock if the system is not properly vented and in addition it determines a strong decrease of flash point P.M., autoignition temperature while the flash point C.O.C is less sensitive to the presence of low boilers. Moreover, the low boilers determine on the distillation curve of the oil a lowering of the initial boiling point and an increase of the final point. During the lifetime of the oil charge, a monitoring of all these parameters (flash point, autoignition point, distillation curve) is crucial to predict the oil charge service life and the actions to be taken in order to assure the safety conditions and the best performance of the product. The presence of air reduces Alaria 2

further the oil lifetime, the air (oxygen) through the radical path leads to formation of polymeric compound (peroxide) that have a big impact on oil characteristics: increasing of viscosity and acidity (TAN), lowering Flash point and auto-ignition point and forming the carbon residues. The oxidation reaction is catalysed by presence of metals in the oil for example: iron and copper.

Eni heat transfer oil: Eni Alaria product line Eni Alaria line is characterized by an excellent oxidative stability and thermal cracking resistance based on highly refined base oils. The resistance to thermal cracking contributes to reduce the formation of sludge and deposit, prolonging the oil lifetime and extending the maintenance intervals. The line, consisting in four products with different viscosities and characteristics, has been developed to meet the requirements of the main applications. In order to choose the right oil, it is mandatory to know the plant working temperatures (the maximum film temperature, the maximum bulk temperature) and the type of plant (open or closed systems). Open system is a system where the oil comes in contact with air at some point of the system, it is important to mention that in an open system the fluid comes in contact with air in some point of the heating circuit and if

this happens at high temperature the oxidation stresses on the fluid could be particularly significant; conversely, if the temperature is low (less than 80 °C) the oxidation process have a limited importance, so that the application can be considered of mild severity and similar to a closed system. Closed system is a system where typically there is an inert gas (nitrogen) between any point of contact of the oil to the atmosphere. In this system there is no consistent presence of oxygen.

unique skills with a systematic research and development of performing products has, over time, allowed us to stand out in the global scenario.” DIESSE Rubber Hoses, the strength of continuity Architects of this all-Italian success were Raffaele, Giuseppe, and Anna Maria de Stasio, who established the company in 1979 and thanks to their intuition, determination and foresight, climbed to the top of the international market sector. “Optimistic about the success that would be achieved, the three entrepreneurs chose an English brand name in line with their vision geared towards worldwide expansion. The brand associates the Italian family name initials, DS, with Rubber Hoses, as a perfect example of the Company’s vocation as a global player and of the basis still now underlying its strategy” says Heleanna de Stasio. An excellence resulting from the experience and entrepreneurial skills of the three founders. They are working in the Company together with the second generation: that’s a guarantee for continuity in the management and constant attention to innovation. At the beginning the company entered the Italian hose assembly market and in the first two years of operation it grew significantly until the availability of hose was no longer sufficient to satisfy the market’s demand. A challenge that turned into an opportunity and led the company to become a manufacturer of branded hoses

in 1982 and to complete the range with spiral hoses in 1990. The careful selection of raw materials together with technologically advanced systems were, from the outset, the company’s distinctive assets, which made it become widely respected for its quality and professionalism on the Italian and foreign markets. “The Customers represent the heart of the Company and its strategic asset: a way of being, thinking, and producing, improving everything we do to better respond to their needs, rewarding their trust” says Giosiana de Stasio, who also comments: “Energy, innovative potential, open-mindedness and rigorous ethics: our growth is also an expression of the vigorous passion that drives our management team every day.” The company’s continuous growth was also the result of a investment plan, together with a commercial policy aimed at strengthening its activities abroad. DIESSE has a production site covering a total surface area of 50,000 m2 and has operations in 42 countries, from North America to Europe, Asia, and Oceania, 90% of its turnover being exports, with North America as its largest output market. Today DIESSE Rubber Hoses is run by Anna Maria, Raffaele and Giuseppe de Stasio, who work together with the second generation. In addition to Giosiana and Heleanna de Stasio, the nephews Stefano Santis in the role of Product Engineer and Alessandro Santis in the role of Process Engineer Transform and innovate to compete globally The competitive edge of DIESSE Rubber Hoses, which specializes in high value-added solutions, resides in the Only-Made-in-Italy design, capable of representing the quality imagery that is typical of the Italian industry in the world, combined with a strong propensity for innovation. The company bases its business development model on three strategic guidelines: Voice of the Customer, Independence, and Flexibility. First of all, the company pays constant attention to engaging with the market to promptly comprehend its evolution and respond with high-performance products. Furthermore, it operates with its own means and it has direct control of the value chain. This grants a greater efficiency and flexibility of processes, reducing the time-to-market. Design for Quality: every new product is designed and assessed with accurate tests that make it possible to combine technology and efficiency. In this way the value of innovation can be experienced in everyday life, the strict selection criteria for raw materials and components are a guarantee for compliance with high quality standards. Moreover, goals for improvement are set as a result of the continuous assessment of performances.

PROCESS

DIESSE RUBBER HOSES

The range of products The company manufactures the entire range of hydraulic hoses according to SAEJ517, EN 853-856-857-854. The company focus has always been to offer products that exceed the norm and hence the birth of the Fortius, Master and Overmaster families. From the experience gained in the production of these types, the families of hoses that perform even more are born since they combine in addition to a superior working pressure a very tight bending radius. This is how the compact Fighter and Stark are born. A similar development path follows the spiral family that has led to the engineering of the XFight family, where extreme performances have been combined with compact dimensions that have led to overcome the values reaching the results of even more than 1M impulse cycle. As bio oils are increasingly present on the market, the XBIO version has been introduced, which, alongside the characteristic of compatibility with these products, maintains excellence in performance. The worldwide presence required the introduction of products that resist even at low temperatures, hence the birth of the Iceflex and ICE Fighter families both in the braided and recently in the spiral version with a range from -70F to + 212F. It is very consolidated the experience of Fahrenheit hoses specifically designed for applications where 302F is required to meet the particular needs of the most important OEMs. Finally, the BOP hoses complete the range, they have been developed with the fiber glass for Oil & Gas sector, which have obtained the certification according to API 16D. Certifications DIESSE Rubber Hoses is a company whose Quality System is certified by DNV UNI EN ISO 9001:2015. It obtained approvals of hose and assemblies by the American Bureau of Shipping, Det Norske Veritas, Lloyd’s Register of Shipping, MSHA (Mine Safety and Health Administration) and the US Department of Transportation. Furthermore, DIESSE is also certified by the European Union Marine Equipment Directive 2014/90/EU. The numerous certifications achieved are the recognition of the company’s stringent commitment to pursuing excellence in quality, while ensuring maximum protection of the workers’ safety and health. “Building on our achievements and remaining loyal to the values of our organization, we approach the future challenges with optimism, , knowing that new important goals await us” concludes Giosiana de Stasio. “We thank our Customers for the trust they placed in us. They will continue to be the core of our success and part of our history.”

A standard relay can’t be used in a Safety Instrumented Function

Safety Relays are devices that implement safety functions. In the event of a hazard, a safety relay will work to reduce the risk within an acceptable level. When an error occurs, the safety relay will initiate a safe and reliable response. Each safety relay monitors a specific function. By connecting it to other safety relays, it is possible to achieve a total monitoring of a machine or plant. Safety relays are a simple and efficient way to meet existing safety standards, resulting in safe operations for the personnel and the equipment as well as a long service life. Risk reduction should be a priority for any business, in order to protect the employees and reduce the risk of costly accidents or equipment replacement. Generally, if a risk can be reduced, then it should be.

INDUSTRIAL TECHNOLOGY

OIL AND GAS, PETROCHEMICAL, AUTOMATION

Some of the functions that safety relays include: •Stopping a movement in a controlled and safe manner •Monitoring the position of movable guards •Interrupting a closing movement during access •Emergency off/stop Safety relays are simple to operate and have a clear structure. The use of safety relays has become widespread due to their compact design, high reliability, and most importantly they meet all the required standards. They have become an integral component of any new plant or machine where safety functions are necessary. A standard relay can’t be used in a Safety Instrumented

Function (SIF). For this reason, whenever it is necessary to use a relay complying with IEC 61508 and the relevant industry standard (for example 61511), we must refer to a safety relay. SIF refers to equipment designed to prevent or mitigate the risks of a specific hazard. It detects the imminence of an incident, decides to take a specific action and acts to bring the process back to a safe state. A SIL (Safety Integrity Level) certified relay (Safety Relay) has a known and guaranteed ability to perform a given Safety Function and reach a specific safe state on demand (i.e. open a relief valve or activate a Fire Extinguishing System). The typical cases of application of a SIL certified relays are represented by a controller that can’t meet the power requirement (V or A), or when the multiplication of the contacts is required, or the controller safety function must be inverted. SIL (Safety Integrity Level) Certified Relays are used for critical loops where careful consideration should be given to Line and Load Monitoring. In applications, such as F&G systems, line and load monitoring are fundamental, and

PROCESS

G.M. INTERNATIONAL

Smart Relays become a valuable tool. Smart Relays are devices that implement the load and line diagnostics functions to the safety functions of a safety relay. The SIL certified relays are not used exclusively in Oil & Gas or Petrochemical industries, they are also a must in many other industries like railways, cars and lift, power distribution and anytime a failure of the relay can cause a serious accident. GM International designs, engineers and manufactures a complete range of Intrinsically Safe and SIL Certified relays. Thanks to specific contact arrangement, GM International relay modules maintain higher level of safety while improving process availability (a single fault is not enough for a spurious trip of the load). In conclusion, you should never consider safety and availability mutually exclusive. Choosing the right SIS can ensure that your personnel and your plant are perfectly safe without you having to suffer any economic loss. How Qatar’s LNG expansion could generate an infrastructure boom Qatar is seeking international partners for the expansion of its North Field gas mega-project, a development that will both boost output and support broader infrastructure growth. On September 9 Saad Sherida Al Kaabi, minister of energy as well as president and CEO of state-owned Qatar Petroleum (QP), announced that the country had shortlisted a number of multinational companies for a stake in the North Field expansion. Invitations were sent out in August and a final decision is expected in the first quarter of next year, according to Al Kaabi. However, the minister also stressed that if none of the candidates met the criteria, Qatar would pursue the expansion alone. QP aims to lift national liquefied natural gas (LNG) production from 77m tonnes per year to 110m by 2024. While the country is already the world’s largest exporter of LNG, it is facing increasing competition from countries such as Australia and the US. In order to improve productivity in this increasingly competitive market, two of QP’s subsidiaries – Qatargas and RasGas – merged in January 2018. The move is expected to save some $550m a year in operational costs. Economic growth to accelerate An increase in hydrocarbons output is central to broader economic projections, with stronger exports contributing to accelerated growth over the next few years. Qatar Central Bank, citing data released by the Planning and Statistics Authority, expects GDP to expand at an average rate of 2.8% over the 2018-20 period, a significant increase on the 1.6% and 1.4% growth registered in 2017 and 2018, respectively. This will primarily be driven by an average expansion rate of 5.2% in non-hydrocarbons GDP between 2018-20. However, the hydrocarbons sector – which accounts for around half of all national earnings – is forecast to recover from a contraction in 2017 and post annual average growth of 0.3%. These figures do not account for the North Field expansion, suggesting the impact could be stronger still if plans go ahead.

138

INDUSTRIAL TECHNOLOGY

OIL AND GAS, PETROCHEMICAL, AUTOMATION

Construction to benefit Energy output is part of the economic equation, but there are also knock-on benefits for related sectors. Work to upgrade Qatar’s LNG capacity, for example, would naturally have a significant impact on the construction sector. Indeed, in a report released in late August, US-based consultancy Dun & Bradstreet stated that the North Field project will provide a boost to construction as the country upgrades and expands infrastructure to facilitate increased LNG production. Qatar plans to construct four new production facilities, along with ethane and liquefied petroleum gas production and fractionation sites, a helium plant and other supporting facilities. The construction sector has experienced notable growth over the past 20 years, increasing 20-fold since 2000, according to Dun & Bradstreet. It accounted for 24% of all non-oil GDP in mid-2018. Significant drivers were government efforts to broaden the country’s infrastructure links ahead of the 2022 FIFA World Cup, as well as attempts to offset the impact of the Saudi-led economic blockade, which began in June 2017. On top of efforts to construct new motorways, schools and wastewater-processing facilities, major projects include the redevelopment of Hamad International Airport, which will see annual passenger capacity increase from 30m to 53m by 2020; the construction of the Doha Metro; and the upgrade of the $7.4bn Hamad Port, which was partially opened in 2017 and will serve as a strategic import-export hub.
