Carbon neutrality and the paths to achieve it.

According to the definition of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), carbon neutrality, or net zero CO2 emissions, refers only to carbon dioxide emissions and is a state of balance between the CO2 emitted into the atmosphere and the CO2 removed from the atmosphere. The intent is to "zero" and "neutralize" CO2 emissions by obtaining a balance of CO2 emissions less than or equal to zero. IPPC provide also the definition of net zero emissions and climate neutrality which are usually interchanged with carbon neutrality. According to IPCC, net zero emissions is the process to get to zero the GHG through the reductions in one’s own emissions-related activities while removing additional GHGs from the atmosphere to make up any shortfalls, all in alignment with the targets of COP21 agreement. While climate neutrality is the reduction of all GHGs to the point of zero while eliminating all other negative environmental impacts that an organization may cause. Companies and sustainability/climate expert often use the term “carbon neutrality” to include all greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions measured in terms of carbon dioxide equivalence when they refer to emissions reduction targets.

Dr. Eng. Mor Nguirane Chemical Engineer

8

Beside this simple definition, in practice carbon neutrality is proven to be a confusing and divisive concept. But anyhow carbon neutrality is a valuable way to combat and contain the climate emergency and it can be applied by all kind of organization and society.

OMC SPECIAL

INDUSTRIAL TECHNOLOGY

Many companies are integration carbon neutrality to their business strategy since they understand the social, environmental and financial impact of the GHG emissions or because they just get pushed by customers to do so. Going carbon neutral requires a strategy from the company. The first step is the assessment of the carbon footprint which represents the quantity of greenhouse gas emissions originating through the life cycle of a product or service. It can be calculated by making an annual business year’s inventory of GHG emissions to track the specific carbon footprint of the company and thus be able to manage it. The strategy must include the emission source of the entire value chain and a realistic timelines and reduction target.

Several recommendations aimed to set and achieve a net zero emissions target can be find among international standard/organization/agencies. In this regard the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) has release a paper “Foundations for science-based net zero target setting in the corporate sector’’ which sets an important milestone in the process of developing guidance for companies on how to set robust, credible and verifiable net zero emissions targets. As it is known a net zero target has a long-term perspective and forces companies to take responsibility for emissions that they have yet to reduce or that they find impossible to eliminate. Insetting and Offsetting are recurring terms when it comes to GHG emissions management aimed to Carbon Neutrality. Insetting is all the estimated and certified investments in carbon emission limitation projects within the production units of the company that provide a beneficial influence on the environment, natural resources and community. Carbon offsetting is a process of compensating for carbon emissions (using certified carbon credits approved by international standards (ISO, UN etc)) that an organization has generated by financing a project to reduce carbon emissions elsewhere through other means, such as carbon sequestration. This make carbon offsets a wild market of competing schemes that use different systems to measure and value greenhouse gas-emitting and offsetting activities.

10

OMC SPECIAL

INDUSTRIAL TECHNOLOGY

Offsetting has a rich history of dispute, criticism (selling of indulgences) and controversy. According to Greenpeace ‘’relying on offsets won’t stop climate breakdown and we must protect intact ecosystems, and restore degraded ones to strengthen their resilience against climate change, to protect their carbon stocks and to increase their capacity to take up the accumulated carbon from the atmosphere. We must do this to store the carbon dioxide that we have emitted into the atmosphere over time, not to offset ongoing emissions’’. A carbon tax might be a valuable option to offsetting practice which is very used by airline companies. Incomes from carbon taxes should be focused on protecting the vulnerable from climate impacts and supporting a just transition to low carbon economies. A potential way to reduce emissions and achieve carbon neutrality is to balance the emissions produced in one sector while limiting them in another. A process that can be implemented by investing in renewable energy, energy efficiency and using low-content fuels or other clean technologies.

THERMOMESS

100% Made In Italy Industrial Valves

Thermomess was already present on the market when, Mr. Angelo Ferrario, took it over in 1992. In few years, he extended the production of the standard ball valves range and introduced the production of globe and ball valves for cryogenic service, which are now our leading products. From the few initial models, we moved to a much wider range but, although growing in the years, also in the number of employees, the company has remained a family business. Our offer includes ball valves in different executions (wafer, split body, trunnion mounted, enblock, etc.), in a range from ½” up to 24”, for application in several fields, among them oil & gas, chemistry, food industry. About the cryogenic field, we manufacture straight way globe valves, angle valves, globe valves with inclined extension and ball valves with cryogenic extension.

14

OMC SPECIAL

INDUSTRIAL TECHNOLOGY

Our globe valves for cryogenic service have body in stainless steel (grade SS304L or SS316L) obtained from investment casting or casting (depending on size), while all other metal components are machined from solid bar. We manufacture ball valves from solid bar or forged pieces, in the common carbon / stainless steels or in special materials (special alloys, duplex, super-duplex, hastelloy, titanium, etc.), coming from Italian suppliers only. We purchase also the other non-metal components (seats, gaskets, etc.) from Italian suppliers only; we can thus say that our product is completely “made in Italy”. Upon request, we can also project and supply valves outside the standard ranges to satisfy particular customer’s needs. We work under an ISO 9001 Quality System and our products are PED, ATEX, SIL, EAC, FIRE SAFE and API 6D certified.

THERMOMESS

“Special” products Some years ago, we started manufacturing “end entry” ball valves (bolting free) complete with heating jacket. The client needed one-piece-construction valves for a very critical service to replace old ones but he required also special face-to-face dimensions, not available on the market. After the first successful supplies, we have completed the range of sizes.

North Africa, Tunisia mainly, plays also an important role for us in the oil & gas field.

We manufactured cryogenic valves for ultra-pure gases working at -115°C, metal seated and with bellows. These valves are now used in the National Laboratories of Gran Sasso for experimental tests with Xenon.

We are always at work improving our commercial sales network all over the world.

The “metal to metal” seated ball valves complete the special range, suitable both for aggressive fluids and for high temperature services (+300°C and more). Germany and France have always been our main markets, especially Germany for the naval.

We have made several interesting supplies for offshore projects in the North Sea. Being the cryogenic valves our leading products, Eastern Europe market is one of our main goals.

Our business philosophy has always been and remains to evolve and to focus on the special construction to satisfy the demand outside of the standard. Customer satisfaction above all. For more information please visit: www.thermomess.com

Digital transformation - four steps to the smart factory

Zofingen, April 13, 2021: Anyone who wants to move from a previously conventionally managed business in the direction of digitization is faced with many unanswered questions. With a high level of consulting expertise, Muller Martini shows how the digital transformation can be achieved in four steps. There is no out-of-the-box solution for a smart factory. Rather, it requires a workflow that is perfectly tailored to the individual operation in order to realize a digital transformation. Muller Martini not only has the products, business and workflow solutions for this process, but also supports customers with the experience gained from numerous projects already implemented. A four-step process is recommended, which first builds up an understanding of digitization, then clarifies the company's needs, structures the process knowledge and finally designs the workflow for the Smart Factory. Step 1: Understand digitization In the long term, digital transformation changes the foundation of every company in terms of its strategy, structure, culture and processes. Whether new or existing equipment is used as a starting point is of secondary importance. Rather, it is a matter of optimally exploiting the existing possibilities in the company. This applies to technical measures, processes and personnel. It is important to understand that digital transformation is very far-reaching and affects many areas of a company. Step 2: Clarify company needs Many companies are afraid that they will have to change everything to digitize their processes. This fear is unfounded. Rather, it is crucial to recognize one's own strengths and to be clear about how the company should develop. In taking this step, it is important to avoid idealistic approaches and only implement solutions that bring direct benefits. Step 3: Structure process knowledge Knowledge about the correct processes is often stored in the heads of employees. This knowledge must be structured and documented for successful digitization. This starts with a common vocabulary and a uniform understanding of terms. But it also concerns the common understanding of processes and their relevant variables. The timing and logistics of production in the existing production cells must also be defined. To reduce complexity, special attention must be paid to standard cases. Special cases should be excluded if possible. Step 4: Shape digital transformation The new target state is now defined on the basis of the principles developed. It is determined, for example, which individual information belongs in the electronic order pocket. The mapping of job structures and the printing of barcodes are also of central importance. For a successful digital transformation, it is necessary to consider and answer all the classic questions of a graphic production from the perspective of digital production.

Petrofac to support next stage of Scotland’s ambitious net zero infrastructure project

March 17, 2021: Scotland took a step closer to its net zero carbon goals today with the announcement of over £30m of UK Government funding for a suite of initiatives linked to the Acorn carbon capture and storage (CCS) project. In June 2020 Petrofac was selected to provide ongoing Engineering and Project Management Office support for the Acorn project. Under Scotland’s Net Zero infrastructure (SNZI) programme announced today, Petrofac will drive the offshore pipeline and subsea activities to develop the Acorn CCS project. The SNZI programme is an industry match funded initiative which brings together academic and industrial partners to develop a major package of work designed to progress a national low carbon infrastructure. They include: • The detailed engineering required to move the Acorn CCS and Hydrogen projects to a final investment decision • Developing a new CCS-equipped power station at Peterhead which would become an early customer for the Acorn infrastructure • An assessment of the potential to re-use onshore pipelines to transport CO2 from the central belt of Scotland to the Acorn Project • An engineering design programme for a carbon capture system on a gas-fired power station in Grangemouth • Development of a “fabrication yard ready” design of a new class of ship which can service the needs of coastal CO2 emitters around the UK for delivery at Peterhead port This important programme of new work and infrastructure reuse will provide a significant boost to the region’s fast-growing low carbon credentials, paving the way for onshore and offshore developments totalling in excess of £3 billion. It will also map out the longer-term economic impacts, job preservation and creation opportunities as Scotland transitions away from oil and gas to low carbon fuels like hydrogen and CO2 removal technologies such as CCS. Commenting, Petrofac’s Chief Corporate Development Officer and Chief Operating Officer of its Engineering and Production Services business, John Pearson, said: ‘’ Scotland has a fantastic opportunity to repurpose existing infrastructure to enable industrial decarbonisation. Not only does this approach shorten delivery timescales and reduce project delivery risk, but it creates a long-term business model that will support investment and Scottish jobs. Petrofac is exceptionally proud to play its part in supporting Pale Blue Dot’s landmark project alongside an impressive team of academic and industrial experts’’. The SNZI programme compliments work that is already underway on Scotland’s Net Zero Roadmap project. This funding will help enable the Acorn Project to be operational in the mid-2020s – a critical timeline to meet the UK’s ambitious net zero targets.

ASSET INTEGRITY a growing need which is becoming a basic setting for any project

Easy access to Databases to monitor any Asset detail, like Spare Parts availability Nowdays, while we all fight with the Pandemia and the Energy Transition challenges, the global demand on asset integrity analysis is increasing, especially to evaluate possible production changes, rehabilitation, CO2 emissions reductions and improvements. The topic has changed from a mere maintainability and

reliability approach; the Oil Price instability along to the Energy Transition is leading the Contractors and the Operators to move towards a circular economy to re-use before dismantling. Standardized approaches to the Asset Integrity like failure analysis, reliability studies, “fitness for service”, residual plant life extension, risk-based inspections are now strongly pressed by the need for technological renovation and we believe the Digital Twin would play the lead of this revolutionary development. A digital Twin is a 3D high realistic and data driven soft copy of the asset, it can be created along the design phase as well as on the existing facilities, starting by a 3D CAD model or by the laser scanning. Digital twin is widely recognized as an upcoming standardized step in the Oil & Gas Industry, starting by its first slogan definition: “the single point of truth”. Besides the effectiveness of a slogan, the above definition is rooted in a very important basic concept: A Digital Twin becomes the ergonomic project box, where design, erection, commissioning, operation and maintenance phases fall into.

Energy efficiency targets

By using energy more efficiently and thereby consuming less, Europeans can lower their energy bills, help protect the environment, mitigate climate change, improve their life quality and reduce the EU's reliance on external suppliers of oil and gas. To achieve these benefits, we need to improve energy efficiency throughout the full energy chain, from production to final consumption At the same time, the benefits of energy savings must outweigh the costs, for instance those that result from carrying out renovations. EU measures therefore focus on sectors where the potential for savings is the greatest, such as buildings, or where a harmonised approach across Member States is necessary, like energy labelling. 2020 targets In 2007 the EU leaders set the three key targets of a 20% cut in greenhouse gas emissions (from 1990 levels), 20% of EU energy from renewables and 20% improvement in energy efficiency. The 20% energy efficiency target was enacted in legislation with the adoption of the Energy Efficiency Directive 2012/27/EU in 2012. In concrete terms, this means lowering the EU’s final energy consumption to no more than 1,086 million tonnes of oil equivalent (Mtoe) and primary energy consumption to no more than 1,483 Mtoe. This is roughly equivalent to turning off 400 power stations. To achieve this, EU countries were required to

• set their own indicative national energy efficiency targets • publish 3-year national energy efficiency action plans

(NEEAPs) and annual

progress reports

Progress towards the 2020 target Following a gradual decrease between 2007 and 2014, energy consumption increased between 2014 and 2017. The increase could partly be attributed to good economic performance since 2014 with low oil prices and colder winters. In 2018, this growing trend was moderated and primary energy consumption even declined compared to 2017. Data from Eurostat (January 2020) shows that the primary energy consumption was 5.8% above the 2020 targets in 2018, whereas the final energy consumption was 3.5% above those targets.

28

OMC SPECIAL

INDUSTRIAL TECHNOLOGY

The energy consumption trend since 2014 was pointing towards not reaching the EU 2020 targets for both primary and final energy consumption. The COVID crisis significantly hampered the economy and decreased the energy consumption in 2020. However, unless the European economy will become more energy efficient, the subsequent recovery will lead to a rebound in energy consumption. Task force on mobilising efforts to reach the 2020 targets The Commission established a task force with Member States to discuss with stakeholders the reasons for the increase in energy consumption in 2014 and 2017 and potential measures to address the problem. The taskforce has held meetings in 2018 and 2019. 2030 targets In December 2018, the amended Energy Efficiency Directive (EU) 2018/2002 entered into force, updating some specific provisions from the previous directive and introducing several new elements. Above all, it establishes a headline EU energy efficiency target for 2030 of at least 32.5% (compared to projections of the expected energy use in 2030), with a clause for a possible upwards revision by 2023. The 32.5% target for 2030 translates into final energy consumption of 956 Mtoe and/or primary energy consumption of 1,273 Mtoe in the EU-28 in 2030. Under the regulation on the Governance of the energy union and climate action (EU)2018/1999, each Member State is required to establish a 10-year integrated national energy and climate plan (NECP) for 2021-2030, outlining how it intends to contribute to the 2030 targets for energy efficiency, for renewable energy and for greenhouse gas emissions. Following the submission of draft NECPs in early 2019, the Commission published a detailed assessment of these draft plans in June 2019 with country-specific recommendations. This encouraged many Member States to raise their ambition levels in the final NECP, most of which were submitted in early 2020.

Published by European Commission on 23 October 2014, updated on 29 July 2020.

underpinned by a global shift of regulators, investors, and consumers toward decarbonization. The Hydrogen Council estimates that if all existing H2 projects come to fruition, total investments will exceed USD 300 billion spending through 2030. In this moment, the request of material characterization in H2 environment is rapidly growing. The main problem that all manufacturers of machines and components using hydrogen will have to face, will be the development and validation of specific materials. Current state of the art in testing on materials in contact with hydrogen are limited to research activities carried out mostly in the university context and few upcoming

laboratories in the world. From a strictly technical point of view, the most investigated problem is the so-called Hydrogen Embrittlement (HE) on metallic materials, which represents an insidious cause of material failure. Pontlab, thanks to its many years of experience, implemented in its laboratories during summer 2021 the ASTM G142 - 98(2016) “test method for determination of susceptibility of metals to embrittlement in hydrogen containing environments at high pressure”. The test method consists in exposing specimens of selected materials to a gaseous H2 containing environment at high pressure or high temperature, while being pulled to failure in uniaxial tension. The susceptibility to hydrogen

embrittlement is evaluated through the determination of standard mechanical properties in tension in comparison to those determined in a non-embrittling environment (control test). The results from this test method can be used to evaluate the effects of material composition, processing, and heat treatment as well as the effects of changes in environment composition, temperature, and pressure. Clean Tech Company, CarbonCure Wins NRG COSIA Carbon XPRIZE

CarbonCure selected as most scalable breakthrough technology to convert CO2 emissions into useable products. Halifax, April 21, 2021: CarbonCure Technologies, a Canadian company that develops clean tech solutions for the concrete industry, has been named one of two winners in the USD $20 million NRG COSIA Carbon XPRIZE. Each winner takes home a USD $7.5 million grand prize. The NRG COSIA Carbon XPRIZE is a global competition that took place in three rounds over 54 months. It challenged participants to develop breakthrough technologies to convert carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions into usable products — with the ultimate goal of tackling climate change. CarbonCure became one of 38 shortlisted contenders for the Carbon XPRIZE in 2015 and in 2020 completed its final technology demonstration in Alberta, Canada. “Climate change can seem like an insurmountable challenge. Team CarbonCure and our fellow Carbon XPRIZE contenders have demonstrated that the challenge is surmountable and that we have the solutions available today to create meaningful change,” said Jennifer Wagner, CarbonCure President and leader of Team CarbonCure. “The prize money will be used to accelerate our path to our mission of reducing 500 million tonnes of carbon emissions annually by 2030. We’re also committing to build an XPRIZE legacy by investing a portion of the prize funds into social equity initiatives.” CarbonCure’s XPRIZE project aimed to decarbonize the carbon-intensive process of concrete production. The almost five-year competition showcased the portfolio of CarbonCure’s technologies, in addition to completing the world’s first integrated CO2 capture project from cement kiln emissions with beneficial reuse in concrete production. The final round introduced CarbonCure’s newest commercial technology focused on carbonating reclaimed water — the wastewater generated at concrete plants — to enable the production of concrete with a reduced water, cement, and carbon intensity. “Buildings are the source of 40 percent of the world’s annual greenhouse gas emissions. The world’s building stock is expected to double by 2060 so it’s vital that solutions like CarbonCure’s scale quickly,” said Marcius Extavour Executive Director of the Carbon XPRIZE and VP of Climate and Energy for the XPRIZE Foundation. “CarbonCure’s solution for the concrete industry exemplifies XPRIZE’s ideal innovation — it is effective, commercially viable, and scalable — and it can make a real difference to climate change today.” The use of CO2 in concrete is expected to become a USD $400 billion market opportunity so solutions like CarbonCure’s are both very timely to respond to climate targets and represent an attractive economic opportunity for heavy industry. CarbonCure was established in Nova Scotia, Canada, in 2012 and its innovative concrete solution is now used in more than 300 concrete plants around the world. To date, producers have supplied nearly 10 million cubic yards of CarbonCure concrete to a wide range of project types. The company is on a mission to reduce embodied carbon in the built environment by 500 million tonnes annually by 2030. “Governments are setting net-zero emissions targets, yet embarking on once-in-a-generation infrastructure renewal projects to restart the economy. Canadian companies like CarbonCure are helping the global construction industry with the critical challenge of managing embodied CO2 in building and infrastructure projects, by turning concrete into a climate solution,” said Catherine McKenna, Minister of Infrastructure and Communities in the Government of Canada. “Winning the Carbon XPRIZE demonstrates CarbonCure’s world-leading position as a negative emission and low-carbon concrete solution.”

The Fourth Industrial Revolution in sub-Saharan frica key to the coronavirus recovery

- Prior to the pandemic, 4IR technologies had begun to take root in the region - Significant challenges still exist, among them ICT infrastructure and education - 4IR uptake could hold the key to Africa’s Covid-19 recovery - International bodies, governments and businesses must work together to implement the 4IR

The pandemic has significantly accelerated the global spread of technologies associated with the so-called Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR), among them artificial intelligence, the internet of things (IoT), big data and blockchain. In sub-Saharan Africa many now see the 4IR as key to the region’s recovery. Progress towards the 4IR – characterised by the fusion of technologies in the physical, digital and biological spheres – was already under way in sub-Saharan Africa prior to Covid-19. In Kenya and parts of West Africa, for instance, blockchain was used to verify property records, while Ghana-based companies Farmerline and Agrocenta used mobile and web technology to support farmers. Elsewhere, in 2016 Rwanda became the first country to incorporate drones into its health care system, using them to deliver blood to remote regions.

46

AFRICA SPECIAL INDUSTRIAL TECHNOLOGY

South Africa is another regional leader in this regard. October 2019 saw the inauguration of the South African affiliate of the World Economic Forum’s Centre for the 4IR Network, and in January last year President Cyril Ramaphosa announced the creation of a presidential commission on the 4IR, bringing together start-ups, researchers, trade unionists and cybersecurity specialists, among others. In an article published by the Brookings Institution, a US think tank, at the same time, Ramaphosa argued that Africa had to leverage the 4IR in order to industrialise, pursue inclusive growth and attract investment. He also expressed his ambition that, thanks to the 4IR, by 2030 South Africa would be “an economy that uses technological innovation to revolutionise manufacturing and industrial processes, and energy provision and distribution”. “We want to demonstrate how science, technology and innovation have been used to enhance our food and water security and to build smart human settlements,” he added, highlighting some of the benefits that the 4IR could bring to the continent.

Strengths and weaknesses Various factors stand the sub-Saharan region in good stead to take advantage of 4IR technologies. For example, in recent times the region has seen a massive expansion in mobile technology, with consumers leapfrogging traditional development channels straight to digital services, particularly with regard to banking.

Africa also boasts disproportionately high numbers of young people, a demographic dividend which is already bearing fruit in terms of the 4IR. More than 400 tech clusters have sprung up across the continent, largely thanks to the efforts of young people, with three key centres – Lagos, Nigeria; Nairobi, Kenya; and Cape Town, South Africa – achieving global recognition. Further to this, a report published at the end of 2019 by the African Development Bank (AfDB) noted that IoT had expanded considerably in Africa, while there had been strong investment growth in technology-led areas. The report deemed this unsurprising, given the transformative impacts that such technologies can have in sectors as varied as agriculture, manufacturing, health care and governance. But the report also highlighted a range of challenges, among them ICT infrastructure gaps and an undercapitalised start-up ecosystem. Education is also widely identified as a key hurdle, both in the sense that education systems in the region are often inadequate, with limited numbers of people attending higher education, and in the sense that there is a mismatch of skills, with many people not given the right training to take advantage of the 4IR. While progress has been made, many challenges remain. Released earlier this year, the UN Conference on Trade and Development’s "Technology and Innovation Report 2021" found that Africa as a whole was the world’s least-prepared region to take advantage of 4IR technologies. South Africa is the continent’s most-prepared country, but it ranks far below fellow BRICS: Brazil, Russia, India and China. The Democratic Republic of the Congo, the Gambia and Sudan number among the continent’s least prepared.

4IR and Covid-19 recovery While the onset of the coronavirus pandemic stalled progress in many industries across sub-Saharan Africa, it also provided a major fillip to a range of technologies, as OBG has extensively detailed. For example, Covid-19 triggered an e-commerce boom in sub-Saharan Africa, and it is anticipated that growth in this field will be sustained moving forwards: according to a report launched by Google and the International Finance Corporation at the end of last year, Africa’s digital economy could contribute $180bn to the continent’s GDP by 2025, an increase on the $115bn for which it is currently responsible. Meanwhile, international bodies have prompted African countries to develop 4IR technologies. Last June it was announced that the continent was set to receive a total of $50bn in support from the World Bank. The bank encouraged Africa to invest in digital technology through the introduction of new digital platforms, the installation of digital infrastructure, the development of digital skills and the establishment of an enabling regulatory environment.

48

AFRICA SPECIAL INDUSTRIAL TECHNOLOGY

A belief in the importance of the 4IR remains prominent among global organisations. Cristina Duarte, special adviser on Africa to the UN secretary-general, wrote in March this year that, “to address the myriad challenges facing Africa in the areas of food security, education, health and energy, as well as bridge the digital divide, it is essential for African policymakers to harness innovation and the potential brought by digital technologies. This will be crucial for the continent’s recovery from the current Covid-19 pandemic”.

Ongoing 4IR initiatives With the benefits of such developments abundantly clear, the question is: what is being done to ensure that 4IR technologies are used to help sub-Saharan Africa overcome its Covid-19 economic slump? Various international bodies are playing a part. For example, the World Economic Forum’s Africa Growth Platform – launched in Cape Town at the end of 2019 – brings together governments, investors and entrepreneurs to create new employment opportunities and support Africa’s digital transformation. Development banks are also key players. The AfDB, for example, runs the Coding for Employment scheme as part of its Jobs for Youth in Africa strategy. The programme provides equipment and training to give young people the soft and interpersonal skills required in many 4IR sectors. In addition, the AfDB’s investments in agriculture are expected to quadruple to about $2.4bn by 2024. Much of the funds will go towards the transformation of food systems, with 4IR technologies to play a major role in this. Elsewhere, the recently ratified African Continental Free Trade Area agreement is an example of national governments taking proactive steps to accelerate development across the continent. Indeed, increased collaboration between the private and public sectors, as well as between national and international bodies, will be key to the growth and successful management of the 4IR going forwards. In short, if Africa can begin to bridge its infrastructure and education gaps, it will be able to continue leveraging the 4IR, both as a driver for recovery and as the foundation for a successful and inclusive future.

Benefits of Using Three Dies Rolling Machines

Three-die, cylindrical, hydraulic thread rolling technology yields higher-precision threading as well as a more efficient operation that results in higher-quality parts. The choice of three-die cylindrical hydraulic thread rolling machine is due to the following factors: •Precision of threading operation because the three rolls automatically balance the forces and maintain the part in a central position. •Higher part quality because there is no work rest blade to hold the workpiece that can damage the thread lead. •Higher productivity because it is possible to work at a 30% higher speed compared to a two-die thread rolling machine. •Better penetration factor because the pressure is automatically balanced within the three dies and the strength necessary to form the material is divided on three dies instead of two dies. •The workpiece always stays in its axial position, so in the case of long parts it is not necessary to move or adjust the loading/ unloading system. •Metallographic studies of the cold forming process involving threads from bar using a three-die cylindrical

54

AFRICA SPECIAL INDUSTRIAL TECHNOLOGY

rolling machine in a thru feed operation show a large flow of material in the first stages of the forming process. As the forming process proceeds, the material flows further inside the workpiece, while the height of the forming area remains at almost the same level. The closed shape of the lead of the thread shows that the material has flown uniformly. The forming process with a three-die thread rolling machine can be divided into three stages: -Stage 1- Dies enter into the material for 25% of the nominal depth of thread; the material on the thread root reaches the highest strength. -Stage 2 – Dies enter into the material for 50% of the nominal depth of thread; the material on the thread sides reaches the highest strength. -Stage 3- Also as the dies enter into the material for 50% of the nominal depth of thread, the material flows to reach the desired thread shape and the strength of the material remains unchanged. As a matter of fact, with three-die thread rolling technologies it is possible to form dedicate components

Chatbot Kim: Get your learners ready for Artificial Intelligence!

In marketing and service, but also in training and development, AI-supported digital assistants and chatbots take on a variety of tasks – 365 days a year, 24 hours a day, worldwide. But chatbots can do more than that: Imagine e.g., a chat that goes beyond mere information by involving the user in a conversation about a special topic – like for example Artificial Intelligence itself! Kim: A Digital Tutor on AI Kim is designed as a learnbot for companies as well as (higher) education, that gives a basic introduction to AI for novices. Kim acts as a direct interlocutor for the user by giving short, concise learning sequences about basic concepts of AI, examples of application, the history, and even offering a short quiz. The user keeps maximum autonomy in how deep he or she wants to dive into the content, as Kim regularly asks back whether to continue or to switch topic. At the same time, Kim encourages the user to learn more, by offering additional information

62

and short side glances on diverse topics, and by asking thought-provoking questions. Kim also offers a rich media experience, incorporating graphics and videos into the dialogue. The example of Kim shows impressively the strengths of learning with chatbots. Compared to many other eLearning methods, the learner is extremely active, after all, the dialogue with the chatbot only continues if you give an answer or a reaction. This is additionally supported by the exploratory character of the dialogue. Building a relationship with your digital tutor A peculiarity of learning with chatbots and thus also with Kim is the phenomenon that through dialogue one almost inevitably builds a certain relationship with the other person (and thus the bot). Thanks to a relaxed tone, well-rehearsed anecdotes and numerous comments and queries, the exchange with Kim feels more like a conversation and less like working through a typical learning unit in the style of web-based training.

Petrofac builds direct air capture into its net zero plan

July 22, 2021 - Petrofac, a leading international service provider to the energy sectors, is pleased to announce that it has become the first company to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) as a customer for Storegga’s proposed UK-based, large scale Direct Air Capture (“DAC”) facility. Petrofac has committed to purchase the permanent removal of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere at the facility, delivering a key tool to supplement existing decarbonisation initiatives in support of its Net Zero goals. The signing of the MOU signals an important step to not only demonstrate the commercial interest in DAC technology in combination with geological storage, but also to highlight the importance of negative emissions technology as a tool to meet the UK’s climate goals. Storegga and its partner, Carbon Engineering, a leading DAC provider and developer of the technology, have commenced preliminary engineering and design of the proposed UK facility. Under its Technical Delivery Alliance with Storegga, Petrofac is supporting this Pre-Front End Engineering and Design (“Pre-FEED”) phase. The facility aims to permanently remove one million tonnes of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere annually. Targeted for North-East Scotland, the proposed facility will be the first large-scale facility of its kind in Europe. The partners are targeting first operations for 2026. DAC technology, when combined with secure geological storage, delivers the permanent and verifiable removal of carbon dioxide from the air, reversing the emissions process. DAC is a high quality, technological solution for greenhouse gas removal that can be scaled to meet demand, with very low land and water use. For sectors of the economy that are currently challenging to decarbonise directly, such as aviation, shipping, and oil and gas, this form of greenhouse gas removal provides an effective way to address their carbon footprint and achieve net zero targets. It also delivers a mechanism to eliminate emissions from the past, and as a tool towards achieving full climate restoration. John Pearson, COO Petrofac, said: “As well as drawing on our engineering experience to support the design and initial engineering of this project, and other low carbon initiatives like it, Petrofac is committed to decarbonising its own operations, and those of our supply chain. DAC provides a high quality, permanent solution for the removal of CO2, which will support wider strategies for reducing our carbon footprint in line with our target to reach net zero by 2030 or sooner.” Nick Cooper, CEO Storegga said: “It is terrific to have Petrofac stepping up and becoming the first customer for our DAC facility in North-East Scotland. This MoU illustrates the commercial viability of DAC for customers and is a key step in delivering the UK and Europe’s first large-scale DAC. “Petrofac’s appetite to become an early DAC customer speaks volumes for their commitment to climate leadership. We are also progressing multiple other parties with similar ambitions and anticipate further announcements as the DAC project continues to accelerate.”

Intellectual property and innovation in biofuel sector

Sustainability is a key theme in current discussions between policy makers, entrepreneurs, researchers, NGOs and the society. Indeed, CO2 emission reduction, the development of renewable energy sources, and natural resources consumption are some of the aspects which gathered more interest in such context. The effort to identify alternative energy sources for the transportation sector is constantly growing and encompasses both liquid fuels, gasses and electricity trying to replace the dependence on fossil energy. Within this context, liquid biofuels that are extracted from vegetables such as sugar cane, corn, jatropha, and algae constitute one of the main alternatives that are available on the market today. Despite the importance biofuels can have in terms of sustainable development for what concerns their reduced environmental impact related to extraction and consumption, discussions are still in place for what concerns the impact generated by their production process. These aspects made the biofuel sector as a key field for policy makers wanting to address the growing socio-political pressure on the themes related to sustainable development. Indeed, countries all over the World are investing on biofuels starting from seventies with the goal of encouraging biofuel production and consumption and supporting research in biofuel technologies. However, as far as the nations producing biofuels are concerned, only Brazil is able to maintain a biofuel marketplace without public support. Conversely, all other countries require policy intervention to make biofuels economically competitive through tax reduction as well as mandatory rules for fuel blending. These investments were conceived to support two main policies: demand-pull and technology push. The first refers to actions aiming to sustain the consumption of biofuels through mandatory fuel mixes. The second, instead, has the goal to support the development and adoption of biofuel technologies thanks to research and development funding. Despite the great effort put by Countries on supporting the development and dissemination of biofuels, it is still difficult to understand the economic productivity of such research inputs. Leonello Trivelli Researcher at Università di Pisa (UNIPI)

68

AFRICA SPECIAL INDUSTRIAL TECHNOLOGY

In order to investigate such aspect, several research teams have used patent data to analyse the economics of innovation in biofuel technologies and the effects generated by policies over time. One of the most recent works on such topic is the one published on Energy Policy and conducted by Michelle Arnold, Joseph A. Tainter and Deborah Strumsky from the Department of Environment and Society of Utah State University. Calculating the innovation productivity of a sector or a company is a very hard task since organizations do not disclose such kind of strategically relevant information. For this reason, the approach adopted by the research team was based on the analysis of data that are publicly available because of their legal relevance: patents. Indeed, the analysis we are going to describe grounds on the assumption that an innovation is taken into consideration only if it has all the features needed to earn a patent. Accordingly, the main source of data was the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) and the researchers focused on the liquid biofuel technologies patented since 1976. The information provided by USPTO included title, authorship, patent number, technology codes, date patent was requested, and date patent was granted. Overall, the search gave back more than 11,000 patents from 1901 to 2016. The patents awarded from 1976 to 2012 were 2587. The biggest part of them refers to the last years and the number of patents on liquid biofuels grew significantly after 2005. In particular, it passed from a few dozens in 2005 to about 700 patens in 2012.

Another interesting information is the one concerning the authors who contributed to achieve a patent. Indeed, the average number of people involved in a patent increased from 1,5 (1976) to 3 (2012) authors per patent. This information is significant for describing the patenting process and the innovation productivity in such domain. In fact, the need to involve more people in the patenting process reflect higher costs to be afforded to get a patent awarded. Conversely, such data shows a lower innovation productivity in the liquid biofuel domain. Such declining pattern in innovation productivity is evident in both newer technological areas (such as information technology, biotechnology, and nanotechnology), and in older sectors (Strumsky et al., 2010; Tainter et al., 2018). Thus, the declining productivity of innovation in biofuel technologies is part of the overall pattern in science-based R&D, resulting from increasing complexity and costliness. Moreover, authors analysed the methanol sector separately. Such choice comes from the importance of such chemical in the biofuel domain, but also in other sectors. Methanol shows a more persistent grow in term of inventive activity than biofuels in general. Indeed, it starts growing in 2001 when the patents awarded were about 10, to the 50 awarded in 2012. However, it presented the same declining pattern of innovation productivity shown for other biofuels. The same happens also for patterns of innovation productivity in first generation (food crop feedstocks), second generation (food crop co-products or waste products, and non-food crops), and third generation (algae) biofuel technologies.

70

AFRICA SPECIAL INDUSTRIAL TECHNOLOGY

These results show that productivity innovation in biofuels domain is experiencing problems which somehow reflects the difficulties of biofuels in penetrating the market all over the world. On one hand, the diminished return of R&D activities may lead companies to curtail research projects. On the other hand, Governmental actions can help companies to address such costs. The last option for company will be to make research activities more efficient and in case reduce the human resources devoted to such actions. In any case, the declining productivity of innovation is a huge problem for a sector which still has big challenges to address in terms of market penetration. Indeed, such criticalities, together with the concerns related to biofuels production represents the main issues for the dissemination of biofuels on a wider scale. Even if policy makers can play a big role in such game, the perception is that growing the market might be the priority for the next future.

Our company has a remarkable stock, with around 500,000 pieces, divided into the families of tools well illustrated in our technical catalog 31; it also has an online B2B where customers can access to see the product and its complete features, and, in case, they can order it: the delivery can be made also in the same day. UFS offer is divided into two distinct production processes: standard and special. For the standard, the current customer response performance is 94% (i.e. in the catalog it is processed from stock, at 94% of the demand, with almost immediate delivery). For special tools, the technical office interfaces with the customer and draws up a technical project that is sent for acceptance; and then there is the offer phase, the customer’s order and, in the end, the execution and the delivery within the agreed time.

The African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA): the path leading to economic and social recovery of African countries

The African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) is a free trade area founded in 2018 at the Extra-Ordinary Summit of the African Union held in Kigali and on January 1st, 2021 the free trading officially commenced. The free trade area was created by the African Continental Free Trade Agreement among all African Unions countries except Eritrea. Since 54 African countries have been signed the agreement, it is the largest free trade area in the world in terms of participating countries. And nowadays 36 countries have been ratified the AfCFTA. The Secretariat of AfCFTA is based in Accra. And not by a chance, four days after the AfCFTA commenced, two Ghanaian companies become the first to export goods using the AfCFTA preferences. The AfCFTA establishes a single market for made in Africa goods and services, eliminates tariffs by 90% and confronts non-tariff barriers, with the awareness to be able to increase the actual 17% intra-African exports share of total continental exports. According to the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa the agreement will boost intra-African trade by 52% by 2022. Increasing this share is expected to increase value addition and help reaching all the benefits above mentioned. he main purpose of the AfCFTA is to eliminate or reduce tariff and non-tariff barriers amongst the 54 member states by providing a single market for goods and services, facilitated by movement of persons across the African continent to reinforce economic integration and lead to prosperity. The general objectives of the AfCFTA agreement are to: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. Dr. Eng. Mor Nguirane Chemical Engineer

create a single market, deepening the economic integration of the continent establish a liberalised market through multiple rounds of negotiations aid the movement of capital and people, facilitating investment move towards the establishment of a future continental customs union achieve sustainable and inclusive socioeconomic development, gender equality and structural transformations within member states enhance competitiveness of member states within Africa and in the global market encourage industrial development through diversification and regional value chain development, agricultural development and food security resolve challenges of multiple and overlapping memberships

To actualize above objectives, Article 4 of the Agreement mandates member states to: a. b. c. d. e. f. g.

progressively eliminate tariffs and non-tariff barriers to trade in goods; progressively liberalise trade in services; cooperate on investment, intellectual property rights and competition policy; cooperate on all trade-related areas; cooperate on customs matters and the implementation of trade facilitation measures; establish a mechanism for the settlement of disputes concerning their rights and obligations; and establish and maintain an institutional framework for the implementation and administration of the AfCFTA.

The implementation of these objectives will, of course, put Africa on the part of economic growth and industrialization. It is expected that each member states should demonstrate commitment, sincerity, and integrity in dealing with other member states. This key objective is to be achieved through successive rounds of negotiations that are to be done in phases. In terms of structure, the main Agreement is divided into 7 Parts and 30 Articles. In addition, there are Protocols, Annexes and Appendices which equally form part of the AfCFTA Agreement. Three of these Protocols are:

1. 2. 3.

the Protocol on Trade in Goods; the Protocol on Trade in Services, the Protocol on Rules and Procedures on the Settlement of Disputes.

Article 8 of the Agreement is to the effect that the Protocols, Annexes and Appendices shall, upon adoption, form integral of the Agreement. The free trade anchor agreement aside, negotiations on protocols are ongoing. Phase I negotiations relate to the protocols on trade in goods and services and dispute settlement. Phases II negotiations relate on protocols on investment, intellectual property rights, competition and e-commerce. The negotiations are set to conclude by 31 December 2021 and the outcome thereof will be constituted as protocols on the relevant topics. The new market created under the AfCFTA agreement is estimated to be as large as 1.3 billion people across Africa, with a combined GDP of $3.4 trillion. This has a potential to boost African countries development and the recovery from the covid-19 pandemic, improve competitiveness of African industries on the global stage further than helping to keep peace throughout Africa. The agreement will also ease people movement across the continent, boost intra-African trade, promote industrialization, create job prior to the implementation and improvement of infrastructures.

90

AFRICA SPECIAL INDUSTRIAL TECHNOLOGY

The AfCFTA is very promising and during the whole process we have noticed a remarkable willingness from the involved parties to make it. Negotiations spanning more than five years led to the signing of the trade agreement on 21 March 2018; it entered into force on 30 May 2019; free trading began on 1 January 2021 after a six-month delay following the COVID-19 outbreak. We just have to keep working hard to make the agreement effective and so put ourselves towards the path for economic and social recovery of all African countries.

GAMPACK GROUP

Innovation and flexibility in secondary packaging

The Company located in Piacenza got a series of orders focused on case packers for an important Spanish company in the “Organic” beverage market. Technological innovation and productivity are, today more than ever, linked to the operational flexibility of the machines, which must be able to follow the demands of a market that the pandemic has changed in its assets. Covid-19 has accelerated the entire packaging ecosystem and the main companies have pushed to achieve the settled targets in terms of materials and volumes, with a glance at the new challenges of secondary packaging aimed at replacing plastic with environmentally sustainable solutions. This is precisely the mission of Gampack Group, the Italian leader in secondary packaging. The network was born from the strategic partnership between Gampack and FuturaPack, historic companies located in the heart of the Emilian Packaging Valley. Gampack stands out internationally in the secondary packaging sector with traditional automated high-speed machines, while FuturaPack is a leader in the design and construction of end-of-line robotic systems. Gampack has a series of orders carried out for an

important Spanish company producing organic and vegetable drinks, located in the natural park of Montseny (Spain), where pure water, low in sodium and with many minerals, flows and is used by the Customer for their own organic drinks. The relationship between the two companies was born in 2007, with the supply of an innovative Wrap-Around case packer with handle applicator integrated into the machine frame, unique on the market and capable of combining an operator friendly use, energy saving and packaging quality. Over the years, their relationship of trust has raised, and many packaging machines have been delivered with increasingly customised models. An example of this settled synergy is Gampack fully flexible cardboard packer operating formats from 2x2, 3x2, 4x3 up to ¼ or ½ pallet tray, in one single frame, even open to the opportunity of further upgrades according to the evolution of the markets. From the constant exchange of information between the two companies, innovative options and applications in the machines range have been developed and implemented by Gampack, in a fluent synergy of processes, people and objectives.

GAMPACK GROUP

In 2020 the last model of Wrap-Around packaging machine with integrated handle applicator was delivered to the Customer, in a completely flexible version moreover equipped with a fully automatic format change system (approx. 3 minutes) from Hmi, where the operator has the sole task of replacing the blanks in the carton magazine, as an alternative to the semi-automatic format change (approx. 15 minutes), which requires some additional manual operations. Another upgrade is the “intelligent” fully electronic divider.

The new supply was appreciated by the Customer and definitely confirms the synergy between the two partners. Moreover, in addition to the technological result in terms of solutions for the market, the Companies share their green attitude by endorsing sustainability in the Organic segment and in choosing packaging materials made with 100% recyclable consumables. AQSEPTENCE GROUP

Specialized equipment and systems for pressure filtration technology

Despite the global impact of the pandemic, this years were not bad. The uncertainty due to this unprecedented period has slowed down some decisions, especially for big projects. In parallel, in the mining Industry, the price of some metals increased and some investments (in particular for Gold projects) have accelerated. Aluminium Industry, Construction & Demolition wastes and Power plants have been other sectors generating jobs and business for our Company. In these months we started manufacturing the biggest filter press in the World. The GHT.5000.F for the dewatering of large capacities for tailings filtration. This product is the result of our industry experience over the course of the last twenty years, as process facilities have increased in size and throughput tonnage. Large capacities would require a significant number of filtration lines with “standard” sizes and affecting the overall attractiveness of the investments. The direction of a bigger size of plates is then reducing the number of the filtration lines and improving the economics of the projects. For example, we’ve gone

94

AFRICA SPECIAL INDUSTRIAL TECHNOLOGY

from a standard 2 x 2 m plate size to 2.5 x 2.5 m, and with our GHT.5000.F, we now have a plate size of 5 x 5 m. The GHT.5000.F will have 141 of these plates. It is 37 m long, more than 9.5 m wide and about 6 m high. The manufacturing is ongoing and planned to be completed by Fall 2021. The company will launch this model through a virtual event on line. Customers are looking for a partner cooperating and helping with our experience and competence in dewatering technologies. A constructive dialogue is requested. The expectations are high and it is fundamental to be in position to work as a Team with the several stakeholders involved. In particular, one of the key parts of our project, is to have a clear understanding of the process. When possible, we want to conduct testing campaigns on representative samples so that we are in position to confirm the sizing and also the expected performances. We can certainly appreciate that the level of education and preparation of the clients is improving. On our hands we have developed our units in order to improve the level of automation as well as the

maintenance. Especially for big projects the client are not only looking at the Capital Investment but they are carefully considering the Operational Costs and, overall, the Total Cost of Ownership. In particular we started designing some models “smart” filter presses working within the Industrial Internet of Things, or IIoT. We think that the opportunity to compile data on a constant basis from its operations will result in better maintenance planning decisions and lower operating costs for the customer. In addition, with the IIoT we intend to maximize the efficiency of the process as well as optimizing the Power consumptions. The impact of the pandemic has definitely changed our usual routine

and the technology has helped a lot and accelerated our digital transformation. This does not mean that, whenever is possible, we would like again to start human interactions and continue to grow by putting our competence at client’s service!

R. STAHL

Thirty years of Remote I/O at R. STAHL

Stahl’s explosion-protected Remote I/O systems: IS1 At the turn of the new millennium, R. STAHL presented the IS1 system, its second generation of explosion-protected Remote I/O solutions. IS1 is the most frequently used Zone 1 Remote I/O worldwide and is considered the standard in hazardous areas. It is based on an intrinsically safe system platform with Ex i fieldbus and intrinsically safe control of the I/O modules for connecting Ex i and non-Ex i field devices. Installation, maintenance or extensions are thus permitted in hazardous areas without disconnecting power (hot work). Adding or replacing I/O modules and Ex i field devices is likewise permitted in Zone 1 (hot swap). The internal intrinsically safe system wiring uses a single, robust BusRail embedded in a top hat rail. In Zone 1, thus up to eight I/O modules (64 analogue / 128 digital signals) can be used and in Zone 2, up to sixteen I/O modules (128 analogue / 256 digital signals). HART and extensive diagnostics are transmitted transparently.

102

AFRICA SPECIAL INDUSTRIAL TECHNOLOGY

The CPU & power modules generate the intrinsically safe internal supply of the system. IS1 allows for setting up field stations in Zone 1 or Zone 2 without requiring Ex d or Ex p enclosures. GRP or stainless steel enclosures suitable for the respective application range are sufficient. IS1+ with new functions In 2010, R. STAHL presented IS1 Ethernet, the first Remote I/O for Zone 1 installation with Ethernet connectivity. For easy implementation of Ethernet installations in hazardous areas and in order to ensure interferenceprotected transmission, IS1 Ethernet uses explosionprotected optical transmission through fibre optics in the “inherently safe op is” type of protection (IEC 60079-28). The protection concept works by means of optical energy limitation similar to intrinsic safety. Alongside offering robust transmission and independence from shielding and earthing quality, it allows for very long distances up to 30 km. Thanks to this, installations with

R. STAHL

Modbus TCP, EtherNet/IP and PROFINET are possible even in Zone 1. The new development of the I/O level in 2013 was the next logical step in the evolution of Remote I/O. Multifunctional I/O modules allow mixed operation of inputs and outputs for analogue and/or digital field signals and of resistance sensors and thermocouples. They enable compact and less expensive systems even with lower and inhomogeneous signal mixtures as well as savings in stocking spare parts. The new low-power design is configured for use in extreme environments with temperatures of -40 °C to +75 °C. At the same time, energy consumption of the system was reduced by up to 50 %, and an extended service life time of up to 15 years was achieved. For each channel, the modules have LED status indications for faults and switching states. The “blue LED” is an innovative improvement for the “maintenance requirement” status indication, which is triggered

by excess heat. The LED corresponds to the NAMUR (User Association of Automation Technology in Process Industries) recommendation NE107, “Self-Monitoring and Diagnosis of Field Devices.” All indications are likewise transmitted to the control system (DCS / PLC) and plant asset management system over the process bus and ServiceBus. Recently, R. STAHL presented a new IS1+ generation for Zone 2 with Ethernet connectivity. The new CPU module has one RS485 interface and two Ethernet interfaces and is multi-protocol capable. It supports PROFIBUS DP and the Ethernet protocols PROFINET, EtherNet/IP and Modbus TCP. For more information: www.r-stahl.com Sales.IT@r-stahl.com

Angola’s onshore bid round attracts global interest with multiple bids

Angola’s oil and gas regulator, the National Oil, Gas and Biofuel's Agency (ANPG) achieved an important milestone earlier this week, when it opened bids for its 2020 onshore licensing round. All 9 onshore blocks received bids totalling over USD 1 billion in investment opportunities July 15, 2021 - Angola’s oil and gas regulator, the National Oil, Gas and Biofuel’s Agency (ANPG) achieved an important milestone earlier this week, when it opened bids for its 2020 onshore licensing round. All of the nine oil and gas onshore blocks in the Lower Congo and Kwanza basins received bids from a variety of oil and gas operators, a rare result in an increasingly competitive and investment-shy global environment. Forty-five proposals from fifteen different companies were submitted to the national petroleum agency, totalling a proposed investment sum of over USD 1 billion for Angola’s oil and gas sector. This initial bid round result demonstrates Angola´s potential to continually attract interest from investors into its oil and gas sector. The ANPG, backed by promising data about its onshore acreage, is seeking to replicate past success borne by Angola’s prolific offshore fields. The onshore sedimentary basins on offer, – namely, the Lower Congo and Kwanza – have long been home to world-class hydrocarbon discoveries. Naturally, the expectation is that Angola’s prolific offshore basins hold petroleum systems with corresponding onshore counterparts; indeed, early onshore exploration activities in Angola have led to the discovery of approximately 13 commercial-sized oil fields and one natural gas field, with reserves ranging in size between 5 and 40 million barrels of oil. Significant upside potential remains by tapping into deeper targets in both the rift and transitional phase reservoirs. The ability to unlock onshore acreage via advanced seismic and drilling technologies is what the ANPG expects will be the outcome of onshore exploration activity. “From the initial data at our disposal, we believe strongly in the potential of the 9 blocks on offer. We look forward to finding the right partners for exploring them at the end of this process. It is our fervent hope that these blocks will play an important role in increasing Angola’s oil output in the future,” said Ms. Natacha Massano, Executive Director and board member at the petroleum Agency in charge of negotiations. The agency’s efforts in streamlining bidding requirements and cutting entry barriers by eliminating the one-million-dollar entry fee for companies wanting to bid, can be partially credited for the large turn-out. Now, all proposals will be scrutinized by ANPG’s technical teams. Final official results are expected to be announced on August 25th, 2021. “These promising early results are a good indication that the reforms made earlier to improve the operating environment in the Angolan oil and gas sector are bearing fruit” said Verner Ayukegba, Senior Vice President of the African Energy Chamber. “The ANPG has only been around for just under three years, and yet, they have been able to organize a bid round during a challenging pandemic. This is a testament of the commitment of the agency under the leadership of experienced oil veteran HE Paulino Jeronimo to stem the tide of declining production in Angola”, Mr. Ayukegba continued. The proposals also included considerable commitments to the development of social and community projects, and the implementation of environmental protection measures to the tune of over several millions of dollars proposed commitments. These commitments are in reflection of the importance placed by the Agency to promote socially responsible and environmentally friendly exploration in Angola. This tender is only yet another licensing round in line with Presidential Decree 52/19, which foresees yearly bid rounds until 2025. Angola’s regulator, the ANPG, is intent on attracting interest far beyond the traditional players in Angola’s oil and gas sector. Special attention has been given to attract mid-sized explorers to new exploration acreage Angola.
