TURBODEN NEWS

Organic Rankine Cycle: an effective solution for heat recovery from open-cycle gas turbines When looking at the gas turbine worldwide market, it is clear that small-to-medium size open-cycle gas turbines are becoming the preferred solution in many realities. On the one hand, gas compressor stations maintain their typical configuration where several gas turbines with limited capacity (< 50 MW each) work in parallel to drive natural gas compressors. On the other hand, the power generation sector needs to adjust itself to the increasing flexibility requirements either due to the intermittent renewable sources or to the development of highly diversified decentralized power islands. In this scenario, smaller decentralized power plants, based on multiple gas turbines with individual outputs below 100 MW, appear to be the right choice in order to provide operational flexibility and to maintain a high efficiency and low emissions profile over a wide load range. Both in gas compressor stations and in small power plants, such small-to-medium size gas turbines do not allow implementing traditional combined Rankine Cycle, because their exhaust gas temperatures may not be sufficiently high, especially under part load conditions, to generate steam at the conditions needed to achieve a high overall electrical efficiency while maintaining good flexibility. An alternative, viable and effective solution is the implementation of a combined cycle

based on the Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC). ORC technology, thanks to the use of specific organic working fluids, permits an efficient exploitation of high-to-low temperatures exhaust gas streams, as it could be the case for smaller gas turbines, especially when working on poor quality fuels. In addition, the specific features of the organic fluids used lead to some technical advantages, such as high turbine efficiency (up to 90%), low mechanical stress of the turbine (low rotational speed, low tip speed, moderate temperatures), no blades erosion, no oxidation, high efficiency at partial loads and with low temperature sources. These characteristics result in an overall heat recovery system that is completely automatic, with simple start-stop procedures and quiet running, and that has high availability and flexibility while maintaining long lifetime (> 20 years) and minimum O&M requirements and costs. Depending on the characteristics of each specific project, i.e. number of gas turbines available for heat recovery, possible layout constrains, water availability on site etc., the ORC solution is designed to best fit with such characteristics. The indirect exchange solution, where an intermediate thermal oil circuit acts as heat carrier from the gas turbines to the ORC unit, is the most common solution, especially with several heat sources available (> 3).

NEWS TURBODEN either water condensed or air condensed: the latter option allows having a water-free heat recovery system and it makes the technology suitable for application in remote and desert areas with lack of water. Among its 280 ORC plants operating worldwide and the other 50 under construction, Turboden has field-proven experience in combined cycle projects with more than 12 projects in operation and further 3 under construction. Turboden ORC unit On the counterpart, the direct exchange solution, where the exhaust gas of the gas turbine directly heats up and evaporates the ORC fluid, can be the right choice to optimize ORC power output and reduce the overall cost. The ORC unit can be

Iran Sees Oil Output Reaching 4 mln bpd by April TEHRAN (NIOC) _ Iran expects its oil production to reach 4 million barrels per day by mid-April, and plans to drill 500 new wells over the next five years to raise output to 4.7 million bpd, a senior oil official said on Saturday. Iran’s daily output in January was close to 3.9 million barrels. “We were due to reach 4 million barrels ...by the end of the (Iranian) year (March 20). This will be realized with a one-month delay,” said Ali Kardor, head of National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC). “Of course, Iran’s crude oil production reached 4.2 million barrels at a certain stage, but later fell,” he added, without giving further details. Kardor said Iran’s next five-year plan which starts in March predicted the drilling of 500 new wells. “This will be needed in order to reach a production of 4.7 million bpd”, Kardor as saying. Under a deal agreed to cut production by the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries in December, Iran was allowed to boost output slightly from its October level. Tehran has long argued it needs to regain market share lost under Western sanctions.

Liebherr Offshore Cranes Expands to New Markets Liebherr›s maritime manufacturing plant in Rostock, Germany has won a deal to supply a heavylift crane for the Orion, a wind farm installation and platform decommissioning vessel currently in development. The crane was ordered by DEME from COSCO (QiDong) Offshore, a subsidiary of COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry. The crane will have a lifting capacity of 3,000t at more than 50 metres, and a maximum lifting height in excess of 170m meters. It is to be designated HLC (Heavy-Lift Crane) 295000. Delivery of the crane is scheduled for 2019. Liebherr Offshore Cranes sales director Gordon Clarke said: «It is a great honour to work with both DEME and COSCO on such a revolutionary project, and fits well into our company strategy. «We see a promising future in the heavy-lift sector, with growth in both the green energy sector and also offshore decommissioning.» The Liebherr offshore crane division made the strategic decision in 2016 to extend its range of heavy lift cranes, in order to better position the company in the expanding decommissioning and offshore wind markets. Both of these are expected to produce high volumes of work in the offshore sector in the coming years. Liebherr Maritime Cranes managing director Leopold Berthold added: «The extension to our heavy crane range allows us to compete in a sector with only a few players that have had little competition of late, and we look forward to winning some of that market share. «The Liebherr Board and the Liebherr Family were supporting this development last year, so winning this order is proof we are heading in the right direction. It will be another important string to further promote diversification and provide access to new growth potential.» The Group›s maritime hub in Rostock is perfectly suited for the manufacturing of such huge offshore machines. Steel construction, assembly, installation / loadout and testing will be fully processed in the facility on the Baltic Sea. A DEME spokesperson is quoted as saying: «We have a long and successful relationship with Liebherr, and this new HLC crane is the best tool for our new development plans for heavy lift offshore applications such as installation of wind power generation plants. «For this purpose, cranes with very long outreaches, high lifting heights, and huge lifting capacities are needed.» Apart from the main crane, the order also includes two of Liebherr›s RL-K 4200 knuckle boom cranes and an offshore crane simulator. A COSCO spokesperson said: «We have completed many offshore and ship projects with Liebherr in the past, so it will be great to work with them on this new venture.»

CARLO SALVI NEWS

Carlo Salvi headers: Technical solutions, high-quality materials, and attention to detail Carlo Salvi SpA is a world-renowned designer and producer of heading machines for the production of screws, semi-tubular and fully tubular rivets, bolts, special fasteners and parts with very complex shapes starting from drawn wire in coils. Machines can be divided in three main families, namely: - single die double blow headers; - 2-die 4-blow headers; - progressive precision transfer headers. The machines of the 2-die 4-blow series are able to handle wire diameters from 1,2 to 12 mm. They are particularly suitable for components whose heads have a very large volume or components where two dies are sufficient but at least three blows are needed, such as for instance allen screws, trimmed components etc. A great advantage of these machines is due to the fact that the third blow can very often be used as an introduction punch if parts with large heads and a very short shank have to be transferred.

Carlo Salvi has developed a new motorized model which is called 248 E, which is an enhanced version of the model 248 machine. The machine is complete with an electro-pneumatic clutch which allows maximum heading tonnage to be applied even when jogging. The machine has been specially developed in order to minimize changeover times. Its technology and speed is such that it enables to run profitably not only large volumes but also small batches. An example of set up and changeover times follows: - k.o. length adjustment first die 30 seconds - k.o. length adjustment second die 30 seconds - cutoff length adjustment 30 seconds - adjustment of opening and closing cams 5 minutes - assembly of dies 5 minutes - assembly of punch block unit 5 minutes - assembly of cutter unit 1 minute - assembly of transfer fingers 1 minute

NEWS FISE ASSOAMBIENTE

THE ENGINE FOR A REAL AND EFFECTIVE CIRCULAR ECONOMY

The role of waste management in Europe and in Italy is changing, becoming more and more a pivotal sector for the access to resources, social welfare, economic growth and environmental protection. As a matter of fact, this sector does not represent only an essential public service - because of its immediate impact on the environment and health in the urban context- but also an important part of the production industry, providing materials and energy (from recycling and recovery activities) to the manufacturing sector. The fast-growing waste management industry enables the use of waste as a resource as well as the ability to recover raw materials from waste. Thus an updated model of development and governance of the waste sector represents also an essential step towards a model of circular economy, understood as a new approach in challenging the crisis and providing a new example for the market and the consumption. Nowadays, waste evokes usually negative visions, emergencies, pollution: elements that have marked some of our territories in very critical contexts and that shape, in a negative way, our way to near any innovative and technological idea coming from this sector. It is absolutely necessary a new approach, more pragmatic, allowing companies to deal more and better with environmental sustainability and

28

INDUSTRIAL TECHNOLOGY

OIL AND GAS, PETROCHEMICAL, AUTOMATION

industrial development. The shift of paradigm started in recent years has meant that waste has begun to be perceived not anymore as an environmental problem but as a resource to be exploited. This change of approach must be accompanied by a structural transformation of the management systems, which by mere organization of services must become industrial systems which can handle a complex of integrated activities aimed at the recovery of materials and energy. Besides, with regard to employment, the European Commission has estimated that every percentage point of the reduction in the consumption of raw materials, fielding policies and resource efficiency measures, could create 100 to 200 thousand new employment. The Italian companies involved in waste recovery have registered in recent years a significant growth, also in terms of employment (see Report “Italia del riciclo”, 2014 – FISE UNIRE), compared to the negative economical trend reported in the manufacturing industry, and this can be considered as a concrete indicator of the ongoing process towards a circular economy. But this system is still vulnerable on a number of fronts, despite all the hard work spent by the waste and resource management sector to improve the quantity and quality of recycling (eg. price volatility and intense competition from lower-priced virgin material). This exposes the fragility of our transition to a circular economy which should provide appropriate market mechanisms, measures and incentives to encourage the spread and use of products that use post-consumer recycled materials.

A BIT OF SCIENCE BEHIND YOUR BIGGEST PAIN POINT The thing that our global economy invests $2.2 trillion per annum into. The issue that can be avoided. The issue that when avoided, prevents unnecessary wastage of resources. Corrosion. Despite the current economic situation that faces many companies today, there is a way to overcome these challenges; Corrosion Control. Instead of achieving project construction in the cheapest, quickest way, consider the following: if you need to delay project completion at a later date due to parts, equipment or spares that are corroding, what is the gain in getting the ‘cheapest deal’ in the first instance? Projects around the world are now specifying a new coating, Omni-tuff Seal’n’Peel. Seal’n’Peel is a peelable coating that prevents corrosion on metal components during storage or transportation. The coating works on a preventative technology, which saves monetary resources and time compared to traditional technologies. Recent results received from one of our clients in Trinidad & Tobago are on right. This shows two flanges that were exposed to a corrosive environment. One was bare metal, one was encapsulated in Seal’n’Peel. Request your sample today by emailing sales@omnituff.com. Seal’n’Peel is stocked in multiple regions, including Europe, North America and Australia. Training and more technical information is also available on www.omnituff.com/sealnpeel. Seal’n’Peel has been specified or applied at projects in varying climates with successful outcomes. Senior field engineer comments are also positive: “…I saw firsthand the benefits of Seal’n’Peel during the past couple of years whilst at the fabrication yard in Malaysia.” - Global Oil Producer “We have had success working with that product.” –Corrosion Control Company, US

Fridle Group, a leading distributor of sealing solutions in Italy, has joined with Precision Polymer Engineering (PPE) to deliver a strategic partnership for anyone in need of high performance sealing for critical applications in harsh operating environments. Oil and gas engineers are under pressure to design components which perform in increasingly demanding environments. One major obstacle is sour gas (hydrogen sulphide or H2S), and its corrosive effect on components such as elastomer

seals. Sour gas can result in non-resistant elastomers becoming hard and brittle, reducing their elastic properties and ability to seal effectively. The company commission independent testing for various oil and gas seal material grades. The NORSOK M710 standard is used to predict the lifespan of seal materials in sour gas environments, with minimum test parameters of 2% H2S in a minimum of three test temperatures – the higher the temperature, the more aggressive the chemical attack on the elastomer.

Tests conducted by PPE involve higher temperatures and higher sour gas concentrations (25%), delivering extraordinary results. All materials tested by PPE passed these stricter requirements, giving a more valid representation of real-life service conditions. Our materials afford engineers the peace of mind which comes with industry-leading reliability and sealing performance in oil and gas applications.

The innovative way for a smart energy saving Our lamps, in this moment, are the key of Xaluxi systems. Their major strength is the fact they are “smart” themselves. Every lamp includes a CPU (electronic brain) with a pre-installed control software whose main purpose is to take account of customer’s needs. Light emitted by every lamp is autonomously adjusted thanks to integrated light sensors.

Xaluxi develops smart lighting systems designing and manufacturing innovative solutions to improve energy efficiency of production facilities, offices, hospitality and similar public and private environments. The technology, patented by Xaluxi, is the platform Xaluxi Ecolumiere, totally made in Italy, which represents a compendium of company’s philosophy: it allows energy saving compensating, in an easy and automatic way, eco-unfriendly behaviors of users and owners. Besides, our lamps get rid of issues concerning installation of an outer control unit as well as the consequent rewiring of the electricity network. No modification is required.

Hazardous air pollutants and waste gases treatment technology: thermal oxidizer Thermal oxidizer is a device used to convert waste gases or liquids into less harmful compounds. The thermal oxidizer is based on the process of combustion of pollutants at a temperature above its auto-ignition temperature and for a sufficient time to complete the reaction. Through the combustion reaction, pollutants are converted to carbon dioxide and water vapor, plus a release of heat. The chemical reaction behind the process is: CnH2m + (n+m/2) O2 --> nCO2 + mH2O + ΔH During the process the mixture of air and pollutants is heated, breaking apart the chemical bond within the pollutants compounds. The amount of heat to be supplied to the reaction is related to the activation energy of the mixture of oxygen and pollutants.

ARTICLE NEWS

Thermal oxidizer, also known as thermal incinerator or simply incinerator, is commonly used in industrial plant where during most processes, toxic gas can be released. So we can found incinerator technology in the petroleum, chemicals, coal, mining industries up to the solid waste processing plant or electronic industry. Applicable pollutants to this technology is mainly the Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC), Particulate Matter (PM) resulting from incomplete hydrocarbon combustion and light hydrocarbons. Because of its harmful effect to human, animal and plants, the release of VOC and PM are under regulations and cannot be done in a certain amount. VOC is defined as organic compound which vaporize at normal condition (atmospheric pressure and ambient temperature). VOCs play a key role in formation of ozone in the lowest portion of the atmosphere (troposphere) where ozone itself is dangerous. Ozone has benefit effect in the stratosphere where it absorbs part of sunlight radiation allowing the life on earth. Thermal oxidizer destruction efficiency depends upon the design criteria. Design criteria are temperature, residence time and turbulence. The concentration and composition of the waste stream are important too. For safety considerations, the concentration of the organics in the waste gas must be below the Lower Explosive Limits (LELs) of the specific compound being controlled. The waste gas must be mixed with ambient air, if necessary, to lower the concentration at 25% of LEL. Typical thermal oxidizer design efficiencies range from 98 to 99.99% and above, depending on the system requirements and the characteristics of the pollutants. Destruction efficiency is regulated by local or international law. • The process temperature is determined by the VOCs in the waste stream. Each compound has a different temperature at which the molecules are broken and oxidized. Most of thermal oxidizer operate at higher temperature than the ignition temperature which is the minimum operating temperature. Thermal oxidation of most organic compound occurs between 590°C and 650°C, even though it can reach 1200°C. • The residence time defines how long the mixture of waste gas needs to be at a certain temperature to oxidize. For halogenated VOC streams, a residence time of 1s at 1000°C is required in order to have the suitable oxidation efficiency. By the way, thermal oxidizer is not

generally recommended for controlling gases containing halogen or sulfur compound because of the formation of hydrogen chloride, fluoride, sulfur dioxide and other corrosives gases. • The turbulence is a fixed condition built into the equipment design. Turbulence guarantee a proper mixing of waste gas and air for the combustion. There are several kind of thermal oxidizer, all based on the same principal and with diverse peculiarities. The most common thermal oxidizers are: Direct Fired Thermal Oxidizer or afterburner (DFTO), Regenerative Thermal Oxidizer (RTO) and Thermal Recuperative Oxidizer (TRO). • DFTO is the simplest technology of thermal oxidation that uses natural draft or forced draft burner. A process stream is introduced into a firing box through or near the gas burner and enough residence time and temperature are provided to get the required destruction efficiency of the hazardous pollutants. The DFTOs are best applied where the concentration of VOC’s is high and can be a fuel source instead of natural gas or oil for complete combustion. Most DFTOs operate at temperature levels between 980 °C and 1200 °C with air flow rates of 0.24 to 24 standard cubic meters per second. (EPA) • RTOs use a high-density media such as a ceramic-packed bed still hot from a previous cycle to preheat an incoming waste gas stream. The preheated, partially oxidized gases then enter in a combustion chamber where they are heated by auxiliary fuel combustion to a final oxidation temperature typically between 760°C to 820°C and maintained at this temperature to achieve maximum VOC destruction, however, temperatures of up to 1100°C may be achieved, if required, for very high control efficiencies of certain toxic VOC. The purified, hot gases exit this chamber and are directed to one or more different ceramic-packed beds cooled by an earlier cycle. Heat from the purified gases is absorbed by these beds before the gases are exhausted to the atmosphere. (EPA) • TRO is comprised of the combustion chamber, the waste gas preheater, and, if appropriate, a secondary energy recovery heat exchanger. TRO is designed based on volume of airflow, VOC concentrations and desired destruction efficiency. During operation, waste gas laden air is drawn into the system fan and discharged into the inlet where it is preheated in the tube side of a heat exchanger. The two types of heat exchangers most commonly used are plate-to-plate and shell-and-tube. Plate-to-plate exchangers offer high efficiency energy recovery at lower cost than shell-and-tube designs. However, when gas temperatures exceed 540°C, shell-and-tube exchangers usually have lower purchase costs than plate-to-plate designs. Contaminated air then passes by the burner where it is raised to the thermal oxidation temperature (650°C to 1000°C) for the specified residence time (0.5 s to 2.0 s) and an exothermic reaction takes place. The pollutants are converted to carbon dioxide, water vapor and heat with within the reactor chamber. The hot, purified air then passes again through the shell side of the heat exchanger where the energy released by the reaction is used to preheat the incoming air. The heat exchanger minimizes the system›s fuel consumption with the system being self-sustaining at moderate LELs. Finally, the contaminant-free air is exhausted into the atmosphere.

Egyptian’s energy strategy to boots its economy After 2011 crisis, Egyptians key priority to rise its economy is the development and reform of its energy sector. This is highlighted in the new energy strategy including security by boosting, diversifying, and improving energy efficiency, sustainability and governance by improving and modernizing the oil&gas sector’s governance and encouraging private sector investment. The Egyptian Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral resources, has recently reviewed his plan and the roadmap includes boosting of oil and natural gas production through increased exploration work and drilling of exploratory and development well. The minister pointed out the continuous expansion in natural gas production, as 2017 will witness the first production of Zohr and Atoll fields with total investment reaching $31,00 billion. Further on the Egyptian government plan to develop refineries and improve the petrochemical industries. The several exploration and development projects undergoing in Egypt, mostly in collaboration with the Italian company Eni, fit into this new energy strategy. After the discovery of Zohr, the biggest gas field in the Mediterranean, Eni recently has completed the development of an additional well to the set plant. The well will be linked to production in the project’s second phase. Eni has already finished digging all wells agreed upon in 2016 and is currently implementing the production facilities to process the produced gas in port Said. Always in Zohr field, other players are coming in. The Egyptian Natural Gas Holding Company (EGAS) schedule to sell 10% of its stake. The Italian company Eni, by his side, had approved selling 30% of its stake in Shorouk concession to the Russian company Rosneft in exchange for $1,125 billion and $450,00 million for the investment it previously carried out. On November 2016, British Petroleum (BP) has announced that it has agreed to buy from Eni a 10% interest in the Shorouk concession offshore Egypt, which contains the super-giant Zohr gas field for $375,00 million. BP will also reimburse Eni for BP’s share of past expenditure. The two companies agreed an option before the end of the 2017, allowing BP to buy a further 5% interest in the concession under the same terms. The Egyptian government by his Minister of Petroleum and Mineral resources have signed an agreement with Cyprus to transfer from Aphrodite field Cypriot natural gas to Egypt via pipeline. As Zohr and Aphrodite field are relatively close, this will allow the development of joint field, which could be the basis to create a regional natural gas infrastructure network. According to governance in the new energy strategy, the Egyptian government proposed a draft law to the parliament (January 2017) which would open up the country’s natural gas sector to private investor. According to this, the private sector would be able to participate in all activities in the natural gas sector including shipping, distribution, sale and marketing. The new regulatory body would be responsible for the granting of any required investment licenser as well as preventing any monopolies. The new law will lead to flexible foreign currency exchange rate, cutting fuel subsidies and the privatization of the public sector. Liberalization is the first step towards transforming the sectors efficiency and competitiveness.

Figure 1 – Goodwin International axial isolation and axial control valves Goodwin International has built up an enviable reputation for the design, manufacture and supply of high quality dual plate and axial check valves. Building upon this solid foundation, a completely new range of axial isolation and axial control valves has been designed and developed (see Figure 1) in order to introduce some much needed competition to this monopolised area of the market. Axial isolation and axial control valves represent a high performance choice, with some features which make them attractive over other valve types: Streamlined flow path o Axial style valves benefit from a very smooth and streamlined flow path through the valve body. o Axial isolation valves therefore induce minimal downstream turbulence. o Axial control valves have a very low fixed pressure drop, allowing a wider range of pressure / flow control. Low maintenance o The actuation mechanism and seals are both highly reliable and robust, allowing long maintenance intervals to be employed without being detrimental to performance. Goodwin axial isolation and axial control valves have been engineered with further benefits over and above legacy products: Split three piece body design o Goodwin axial isolation and axial control valves have a novel split body design which is well accepted on other valve types. International patent pending. o In the case of the axial style valve, this permits 100% access for non-destructive examination, which is not possible on existing single piece body styles. Verification of

material integrity is of the highest concern Rack-pinion-rack gear train o Goodwin has developed a novel gear train in order to open and close the valve. International patent pending. o The Goodwin Rack-Pinion-Rack mechanism (see Figure 2) ensures that actuation forces are distributed along the centre line of the valve both horizontally and vertically. o As the Rack-Pinion-Rack mechanism makes use of a rolling gear arrangement rather than a sliding gear, the frictional forces are much lower, therefore the mechanism requires less force to operate. o Lower forces coupled with a rolling mechanism make the Rack-Pinion-Rack mechanism effectively immune to seizure, which is the failure mode typically associated with sliding gear trains.

Figure 2. Goodwin Rack-Pinion-Rack mechanism

The launch of these two new products coincides with the formation of Goodwin Flow Control, a new division within the Goodwin PLC group of companies, dedicated to the development and manufacture of this exciting new range. With CAPEX and OPEX budgets being considerably squeezed in this period of low oil and gas commodity prices, Goodwin Flow Control are pleased to be able to offer a highly effective and efficient alternative to both new and existing customers. Oil and Gas – Composites Materials for Pumps The demand for pump reliability and performance is everyday increasing. Today, pump users demand higher reliability, lower vibration levels, better efficiency and lower maintenance cost. If the traditional metallic materials (stainless steel, high alloyed steel and bronze) offer the same performance level, new composite materials could do most better ! Actually, their introduction in the API 610 9 th edition (2003) recognizes and lists them as a perfect option for replacing metal wear parts to improve pump performance in appropriate applications. API pumps and most heavy industrial pumps are designed and fitted with sets of replaceable wear components (i.e., bushings, bearings, interstage sleeves and impeller wear rings). All these components could be proposed in composite materials. Most of the worlwide leaders of pump industry propose it now as an original equipment or during the manutention as an upgrade in order to increase the pump performances in such critical applications: Boiler Feed Water Pumps, Cooling Water Pumps, Condensate Pumps, Process Water Pumps, Sump Pumps, Fire Water Pumps, Sour Water Pumps, Deep Well Pumps, Naphtha Pumps, Gasoline, Diesel, Cetane, mixe, Propane, Isobutane, mixed HC blending Pumps, etc. The advantages compared to metallic parts are numerous : •Improved realibity: reduction of the vibration, anti-galling properties, extended dry running •Prevention of catastrophical failure: sacrifical material, protection of metal hardware •Improved efficiency: less energy consumption, increased pump efficiency •Lower manutention cost: extensive lifetime, better corrosion resistance In this historical moment for the Islamic Republic of Iran and in high demanding world for better performances, composite materials should be the right answer for the necessary manutention in process.

Temperatures change values: Why quantity conversion is such a critical factor in the petroleum supply chain

When petroleum products are traded, volumes have to be converted into weight, and vice versa. It is vital for this calculation to be performed correctly because even the smallest inaccuracy will affect key processes in the supply chain of oil and gas companies – from the safety of the loading and warehousing operations through to the computation of tax liability. In an interview with Stephan Buhre, Managing Partner at downstream software specialist Implico, Industrial Technology Magazine learned about the pitfalls that await the unwary and about the role that software solutions can play in the conversion process.

Mr. Buhre, how much does the conversion of quantities matter in petroleum logistics? A wide range of products is produced from crude oil – from gasoline to liquid gases to aromatics. The volume and density of all these materials changes

– and at different rates – at different temperatures. Whenever oil products are transported, different units of volume have to be converted into units of weight and vice versa. This makes the issue both complex and relevant for the logistics processes. Industry uses huge quantities of oil products, and even the smallest temperature fluctuation can result in substantial differences in quantities, leading to marked fluctuations in value. Can you explain the physical context? As already mentioned, the volume and density of petroleum products are temperature dependent. For example, if you load a tanker truck with 30,000 liters of fuel at an outside temperature of 25 degrees Celsius and later unload the same tanker at 10 degrees Celsius, the measured volume will be significantly less. The recipient thus receives a smaller amount through no fault of the seller. The only way to be sure of knowing the correct quantities at different temperatures is to take into account what is known as the volume correction factor (VCF). Using this, you can convert the volume at the current temperature to the volume at a reference temperature. You can also use the volume correction factor to calculate the density of the substance at that temperature. And this is important when you want to convert volume into weight and vice versa. INDUSTRIAL TECHNOLOGY

OIL AND GAS, PETROCHEMICAL, AUTOMATION

73

AUTOMATION IMPLICO So, with the aid of the volume correction factor, the contracting party has a reference point that allows everyone to refer to the same quantities when, for example, liters are being converted into kilograms and vice versa. Exactly. And the reference point of petroleum products depends on where you are. It is 15 degrees Celsius in Europe, 20 degrees Celsius in warmer southern countries and 60 degrees Fahrenheit in the US. This equates to about 15.5 degrees Celsius. For specialty products like bitumen, the reference point is 25 degrees Celsius. The density of the 30,000 liters of fuel in our example would be calculated at 15 degrees Celsius and this value is then used throughout the supply chain. This ensures that same amount is always referenced throughout the transportation process: from the refinery, to the tank terminals, to the consumer. There must be some basis for this calculation because specific density varies from one substance to the next. That is why the specific gravity is determined at the refinery where the crude oil is processed and the product is assigned to a particular class. These are: A for crude oils, B for refined products, C for special substances, D for lubricating oils and E for LPG. These classifications were developed by the American Petroleum Institute and form part of the recognized industry standards of organizations such as the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), the German Institute for Standardization (DIN) and the British Energy Institute (EI). These standards contain the specific densities and the temperature versus density curves for all substances based on oil, together with the relevant conversion formulas. Everyone in the oil and gas supply chain needs these, as they provide a universal reference for doing business with petroleum products. Can you give us some examples of when these conversions play a particularly important role in the oil and gas supply chain? Let’s stay with our example of the tanker truck. Bulk liquid cargo is normally measured in units of volume – usually liters. But as soon as the tanker travels on a public road, national road traffic regulations often insist that the weight of the

74

INDUSTRIAL TECHNOLOGY

OIL AND GAS, PETROCHEMICAL, AUTOMATION

load has to be determined and documented – to ensure, for example, that the vehicle’s maximum permissible axle weight is not exceeded. Then the regulations on the transport of dangerous substances require that sufficient space is left in the tank to allow for expansion caused by a rise in temperature. The carrier must therefore not only ascertain the weight of the cargo but must also know how its volume expands at different temperatures. If the tanker truck discharges its load at a higher temperature, more liters will be discharged than were originally loaded – even though the weight has remained the same. ... which the customer will not wish to pay for. It does not matter from which side you look at it: both parties have an interest in ensuring that there are no discrepancies and that the agreed quantity is actually delivered. Moreover, companies trading in petroleum products are not the only ones with a stake in this – the tax authorities also want to know that the figures add up. Tax – that’s an important word. Petroleum products generally attract different levels of tax. That’s certainly one of the distinctive features about petroleum products: since they are subject to different and often very high taxation rates, traders are keen to transport and store as much untaxed product as they can. This allows them to minimize the capital they have tied up prior to the point of consumption. Traders are often not required to pay tax until they sell their products. Take Germany, for example. There is a basic requirement to pay energy tax on all movements of petroleum – even if you are just moving your own product from one tank terminal to another without any change of ownership taking place. You can suspend this tax liability under certain conditions, by operating what is known as a “tax warehouse”. The German customs must receive prior notice of any movement of goods out of the tax warehouse. And here again it is very important to be able to precisely and consistently determine how much product is being shipped. You have been dealing with this issue for over 25 years. What is different now compared

IMPLICO AUTOMATION with when you started? A lot! Refineries and tank terminals used to work out the quantities of petroleum products on a calculator. And then manually transfer the figures from one delivery note, invoice and tax form to the next. It was all very time consuming and prone to errors. Everyone involved not only had to determine the correct data but also to accurately convert and update the quantities involved each time the product was moved. Today, with the right software, this happens completely automatically, eliminating potential errors and improving the efficiency of the petroleum logistics processes. So, compared with 25 years ago, when shippers, schedulers and quantity bookkeepers were busy copying figures from tables, these processes now run fully automatically. Could you give us an overview of how this happens? At Implico, we developed OpenTAS QCM to take care of quantity conversion. The name stands for Quantity Conversion Module and it is integrated into our OpenTAS tank terminal administration system, among others. OpenTAS QCM contains all the data from the tables and standards mentioned earlier and calculates the required values automatically. We make sure that the data is always up-to-date and that it includes all international conventions. All that the shipper has to do is enter the type of product and the initial values for each

bulk movement. This avoids the kind of errors that can become very costly in the downstream process. What is special about our solution is that OpenTAS QCM can be integrated into the entire end-to-end petroleum logistics process chain – from the refinery to the end customer. The module communicates with other systems and automatically outputs the correct data – right up to quantity bookkeeping and invoicing in ERP systems such as SAP. Are you saying that OpenTAS QCM is a solution for the entire supply chain? That is indeed what is unique about our OpenTAS QCM. Companies can use the system as a standalone solution to convert individual volumes. We supply a free web-based calculator or an Excel add-in at www.implico.com. The module can also be integrated into SAP ERP systems. To do this, we use a remote function server, which carries out the necessary calculations. It is a particularly attractive option for oil and gas companies working with SAP IS Oil, SAP Secondary Distribution Management for Oil & Gas or SAP Retail Fuel Network Operations. When it comes down to it, however, we can integrate OpenTAS QCM into any other environment, such as other TAS systems or logistics software. Mr. Buhre, many thanks for your time.

Gas and oil supply routes A key part of ensuring secure and affordable supplies of energy to Europeans involves diversifying supply routes. This includes identifying and building new routes that decrease the dependence of EU countries on a single supplier of natural gas and other energy resources. Opening up the Southern Gas Corridor Many countries in Central and South East Europe are dependent on a single supplier for most or all of their natural gas. To help these countries diversify their supplies, the Southern Gas Corridor aims to expand infrastructure that can bring gas to the EU from the Caspian Basin, Central Asia, the Middle East, and the Eastern Mediterranean Basin. Initially, approximately 10 billion cubic meters (bcm) of gas will flow along this route when it opens in 2019/2020. Given the potential supplies from the Caspian Region, the Middle East, and the East Mediterranean however, the EU aims to increase this to 80 to 100 bcm

of gas per year in the future. EU actions for expanding the Southern Gas Corridor include: • keeping the infrastructure projects needed for the Corridor on the EU’s list of projects of common interest. These are projects which can benefit from streamlined permitting process, receive preferential regulatory treatment, and may apply for EU funding from the Connecting Europe Facility • cooperating closely with gas suppliers in the region including Azerbaijan, Iraq and Turkmenistan • cooperating closely with transit countries including Azerbaijan, Georgia and Turkey • negotiating with Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan on a Trans-Caspian pipeline to transport gas across the Caspian Sea. Developing the Mediterranean hub The EU wants to create a Mediterranean gas hub in the South of Europe to help diversify its energy suppliers and routes. To this end, the EU is engaged in an active energy dialogue at political level with Northern African and Eastern Mediterranean partners. Taking into account the huge potential of Algeria, both for conventional and unconventional gas resources, as well as the new gas resources in the East Mediterranean and the associated infrastructure development plans, the Mediterranean area can act as a key source and route for supplying gas to the EU. LNG terminals Liquefied natural gas (LNG) imported to Europe through LNG terminals is a source of diversification that contributes to competition in the gas market and security of supply. New LNG supplies from North America, Australia, Qatar, and East Africa are likely to increase the size of the global LNG market and some of these volumes should reach the European market. Considering that most of the existing capacity is located in Western Europe and the existence of internal bottlenecks from the Atlantic coast to the East, the development of a few new regasification units in Eastern Europe would be justified. This is the case in the Baltics and in South-East Europe where LNG regasification units have been identified as Projects of Common Interest under the Regulation on the guidelines for trans-European energy infrastructure. ULTRA’s success is based on satisfying customer requirement through efficient manufacturing and by providing quality products and competitive pricing. ULTRA POMPE know how and experience has been handed down from one generation to the next. Due to this reason they have accumulated a lot of direct experience in the last sixty years. ULTRA POMPE maintains a large inventory of standard spare parts and unassembled pumps in its own stock, allowing us to quickly provide complete pumps or replacement spare

parts for customer emergency. Compact enough to quickly provide innovative custom designs, but large enough to manufacture high volumes in a short time, Ultra Pompe invests every year in new technology for the automatization of its production lines. At today, each machinery in our factory has at least one automatic backup in addition to one controlled manually. This allows us to avoid any production delays caused by machinery crashes and to meet promised delivery. ULTRA POMPE carries on in its own premises the whole of mechanical processing, gear cutting included, thus achieving an unparalleled quality standard of the finished products. Continually updating out technology and products designs allows ULTRA POMPE to provide the right gear pump or system for a variety of processes and liquid, semi-fluid or emulsions. Using of UNI/ISO /ANSI/DIN/MEC dimension significantly increase the possibility to meet all customer requests. GEAR PUMPS – EASY VIEW These gear pumps are used from 1 up to viscosity 1’000’000 cSt. In the operating scheme is shown how the rotations of the gears displace the product from the inlet side to the outlet side. The entire operation can be resumed in three main phases: Suction, Delivery and Discharge. Into a gear pumps the two rotors, that are respectively called driving and driven rotor, are seated in a body that round them from all side. On the both sides of the mesh zone of the teeth there is a hole in the body of the pump. These holes are respectively called suction and discharge. Spinning the rotors the fluid is

PROCESS ULTRA POMPE moved, through the chambers between the teeth of the rotors and the body, from the suction side to the discharge side. Fluid does not pass through the meshing zone of the gears due to small tolerances. A back-flow of the fluid is blocked by the contact of the teeth of the two rotors in the meshing zone. ADVANDAGE Gear pumps need a lesser NPSH and have better properties of delivery repeatability. Gear pumps,

being rotary volumetric pumps, are the best metering pumps, since their delivery depends directly on the revolutions rate. Also gear pumps will not generate flow pulsations, as standard metering pumps do, making the media flow constant.

Waste Water treatment Waste water is any water that has been adversely affected in quality by human influence. We can divide the waste waters in two macro-categories: Domestic waste water (also called sewage) and industrial waste water. Domestic sewage is wastewater discharged from sanitary conveniences in residential, office, commercial, factories. It is a complex mixture containing primarily water (approximately 99%) together with organic and inorganic constituents. These constituents or contaminants comprised suspended, colloidal and dissolved materials. Domestic sewage, since it contains human wastes, also contains large numbers of micro-organisms and some of these can be pathogenic. Industries figure among the greatest water consumers. Combining a set of unique physical and chemical properties, water is used in many manufacturing processes. The use of water in industrial processes may result in a deterioration of its quality with the appearance of undesirable chemical substances, biological contaminants, suspended solids and gases which contaminate the water. Industrial wastewaters are effluents that result from human activities which are associated with raw-material processing and manufacturing. Examples of industrial wastewaters include those arising from chemical, pharmaceutical, electrochemical, electronics, petrochemical, and food processing industries, other than agro-industrial wastewaters include those arising from industrialscale animal husbandry, slaughterhouses, fisheries, and seed oil processing. Water pollution occurs when potential pollutants in these streams reach certain amounts causing undesired alterations to a receiving waterbody. Industrial wastewaters have very varied compositions depending on the type of industry and materials processed. Some of these wastewaters can be organically very strong, easily biodegradable, largely inorganic, or potentially inhibitory. All major terrestrial ecosystems, animals and humans depend on freshwater (i.e. water with less than 100mg/L salts) for their survival. The earth’s water is primarily saline in nature (about 97%). Of the remaining (3%) water, 87% of it is locked in the polar caps and glaciers. This would mean only 0.4% of all water on earth is accessible freshwater. The latter is a continually renewable resource although natural supplies are limited by the amounts that move through the natural water cycle, that is not sufficient to cover natural biota and human demand. Freshwater shortages is also due

82

INDUSTRIAL TECHNOLOGY

OIL AND GAS, PETROCHEMICAL, AUTOMATION

ARTICLE PROCESSO PROCESS

to the declining water quality in freshwater sources already in use. This declining in water quality is primarily due to pollution. Freshwater shortages increase the risk of conflict, public health problems, reduction in food production, inhibition of industrial production expansion, and these problems threaten the environment. With the aim to preserve this irreplaceable resource, have been developed the Waste Water Treatments plants, which convert wastewater into an effluent that can be either returned to the water cycle with minimal environmental issues or reused. Waste water must be treated in order to remove undesirable chemical substances, biological contaminants, suspended solids and gases from contaminated water. Any wastewater treatment plant, with no exception of the sewage treatment plant, is a combination of separate unit processes arranged in a sequence such that each would support the performance of the downstream processes as wastewater with a particular range of characteristics progresses through the plant. This sequence of unit processes forms the treatment train. At the end of this treatment train, the resulting effluent is expected to meet a specified quality. The amount of treatment, and hence the complexity of the plant, is dependent on the treated effluent quality objectives and the nature of the raw wastewater. Notwithstanding the size and engineering complexity of some of these treatment plants, the unit processes in these plants can be classified into five groups: (i) Preliminary treatment; (ii) Primary treatment; (iii) Secondary treatment; (iv) Tertiary treatment and; (v) Sludge treatment. Preliminary and Primary treatment: Preliminary treatment removes all materials that can be easily collected from the raw wastewater before they damage or clog the pumps and pipe lines of primary treatment. The effluent passes through a bar screen to remove all large objects like cans, rags, sticks, plastic packets etc. This is done with manually cleaned screen or with automated mechanically raked bar screen (in modern plants). The solids are collected and later disposed in a landfill, or incinerated. Bar screens or mesh screens of varying sizes may be used to optimize solids removal. If these solids are not removed, they become entrained in pipes and moving parts of the treatment plant, and can cause substantial damage and inefficiency in the process. For the same reasons, preliminary treatment may include a sand or grit removal stage (most commonly in the sewage waste treatment plants). Waste water treatment plants are more efficient under uniform flow conditions. Equalization basins may be used to produce flows, or compositions, or both which are closer to the average values used in the water treatment plant designs. Oil and grease are removed by passing the waste water through a small tank where skimmers collect the fat floating on the surface. Air blowers in the base of these units may also be used to help recover the fat as a froth. Another important step in the treatment train (especially for industrial wastewater treatment plant) is the pH adjustment. If the water is acidic (lower than 7), lime, soda ash, or sodium hydroxide can be added to raise the pH during water purification processes. Making the water alkaline helps coagulation and flocculation processes work effectively. Acid (carbonic acid, hydrochloric acid or sulfuric acid) may be added to alkaline waters in some circumstances to lower the pH.

INDUSTRIAL TECHNOLOGY

83

PROCESS ARTICLE

Many plants include also the use of coagulants in order to reduce the particles rate. The coagulants most commonly used are aluminum and iron salts, which reacts with the alkalinity in the wastewater and forms the metal hydroxide as in Al(OH)3 or Fe(OH)3. These precipitates combine into larger particles under natural processes named flocculation. The term most often used for the amorphous metal hydroxides is «floc». These flocs adsorb and enmesh particles in suspension and facilitate their removal by subsequent processes of sedimentation (in sedimentation basin). The sedimentation basin is best located close to the flocculation basin so the transit between the two processes does not permit settlement or floc break up. In this basin, the flocs settle to the bottom and are separated from the treated water. Secondary treatment: The role of the secondary treatment is to remove the colloidal and dissolved material remaining after the preliminary and primary treatment stages. Colloidal and soluble pollutants are organic in nature and biodegradable. Hence primary treated wastewaters would need further treatment and such secondary treatment is often biological in nature. This process exploit the aerobic biological activity of micro-organisms (like bacteria and protozoa) to digest the dissolved and suspended organic material as well as the nutrients nitrogen and phosphorus. In industrial wastewater treatment, these bioprocesses can be preceded by anaerobic processes used to provide partial and subsequently almost complete stabilization of the biodegradable substances. The reason for staged-treatment is the relatively high organic strength of many industrial wastewaters. The bacteria and protozoa consume biodegradable soluble organic contaminants and bind much of the less soluble fractions into floc. Secondary treatment systems are classified as fixed-film or suspended-growth systems. • Fixed-film or attached growth systems include trickling filters, bio-towers, and rotating biological contactors, where the biomass grows on media and the sewage passes over its surface. The fixed-film principle has further developed into Moving Bed Biofilm Reactors (MBBR) and Integrated Fixed-Film Activated Sludge (IFAS) processes. An MBBR system typically requires a smaller footprint than suspended-growth systems. • Suspended-growth systems include “activated sludge”, where the biomass is mixed with the sewage and can be operated in a smaller space than trickling filters that treat the same amount of water. However, fixed-film systems are more able to cope with drastic changes in the amount of biological material and can provide higher removal rates for organic material and suspended solids than suspended growth systems At the end of these process, the generated biological flocs are removed by sedimentation or filtration from the treated water. Tertiary treatment: The purpose of tertiary treatment is to provide a final treatment stage to further improve the effluent quality before it is discharged to the receiving environment (sea, river, lake, wet lands, ground, etc.) or to achieve the quality required by specific purposes, like medical, pharmacological, chemical and industrial applications.

ARTICLE PROCESS

Wastewater may contain high levels of the nutrients nitrogen and phosphorus. Excessive levels of the substances can encourage the overgrowth of weeds and algae. Different treatment processes are required to remove nitrogen and phosphorus. • Nitrogen is removed through the biological oxidation of nitrogen from ammonia to nitrate (nitrification), followed by denitrification, the reduction of nitrate to nitrogen gas. Nitrogen gas is released to the atmosphere and thus removed from the water. • Phosphorus can be removed biologically in a process called enhanced biological phosphorus removal or by chemical precipitation, usually with salts of iron (e.g. ferric chloride), aluminum (e.g. alum), or lime. Once removed, phosphorus, in the form of a phosphate-rich sewage sludge, may be dumped in a landfill or used as fertilizer. Another important tertiary treatment is the disinfection. The purpose of disinfection in the treatment of waste water is to substantially reduce the number of microorganisms in the water to be discharged back into the environment for the later use of drinking, bathing, irrigation, etc. The effectiveness of disinfection depends on the quality of the water being treated, the type of disinfection being used, the disinfectant dosage (concentration and time), and other environmental variables. Common methods of disinfection include ozone, chlorine, ultraviolet light, or sodium hypochlorite. Sludge treatment: The sludges accumulated in a wastewater treatment process must be treated and disposed of in a safe and effective manner. The waste sludge can be thickened and then aerobically or anaerobically digested to reduce solids content and to render the sludge safer in terms of pathogenic organisms (especially if the waste activated sludge had been mixed with primary sludge from the primary treatments). Sludge treatment depends on the amount of solids generated and other site-specific conditions. Typically, anaerobic digestion is used in sewage treatment plan, aside from reducing the quantity of solids requiring final disposal, also offer the opportunity for recovering energy from the organic solids. Aerobic sludge digesters conversely are typically used in in industrial wastewater treatment plants, where the quantities of excess sludge produced typically does not justify the inclusion of an anaerobic digestion unit in the treatment train. The digested sludge is dewatered to reduce moisture and hence volume. Methods used include drying beds, filter presses, and centrifuges. Dewatered sludge may be incinerated or transported offsite for disposal in a landfill or use as an agricultural soil amendment. Dr. Eng. Davide Lavanga

The Advisory Board of IVS 2017 selected 50 papers for the Conference In parallel my Secretary, Manuela Tonolini, has contacted all authors of the selected papers asking them to confirm their presence and attendance at IVS 2017 The manuscript is due by March 17th for its final examination by the designated sessions’ chairmen for the final comments and eventual amendments. The final documents (i.e. manuscript and Power Point presentation) are required – at the latest – by April 7th.

1.The call for papers for IVS 2017 closed on 24th November: are you satisfied with the outcome? Yes. The “Call-for-papers” generated 105 abstracts which came from a large geographic scenario, covering all types of “stake-holders” involved in the industrial valve markets, more specifically for the O&G and Power Generation sectors. Out of these 105 proposed abstracts the Advisory Board selected 50 papers which have been split in 13 sessions which will run in parallel on Wednesday May 24th and Thursday May 25th. 2.During the recent meeting held in Bergamo, the Advisory Board of IVS 2017 completed the abstract review process to select the most valuable ones. Did you follow any specific criteria? The Advisory Board met, last time, here in Bergamo on January 26th and 27th. The participation was intense and the few Members not able to attend physically were connected in video-conference, allowing a very efficient and profitable meeting. The Advisory Board completed its task in selecting the final papers and drafting the Conference Program.

3.Can you summarize the most interesting ideas? The IVS 2017 conference will cover a variety of topics, from design and manufacturing, standardisation, controls, users’ experiences and total cost of ownership. which have all been properly picked-up by the selected authors. Among the most interesting and significant ideas and highlights, I like to mention: •new and innovative materials in valves, sealing elements, components and coatings •new concepts in actuators’ design and relevant remote control systems •changes in existing international standards and general international standardisation overview •new design and manufacturing opportunities to valve manufacturers offered by the metal 3D printing 4.When will the official Conference Programme be released? The preliminary Conference Program is already available on our website (www.industrialvakvesummit.com). Its final version will be released and printed, by end of April.

FAIRS FLASH NEWS

FLASH NEWS BP TO SELL PART OF INTERESTS IN MAGNUS FIELD AND SULLOM VOE TERMINAL IN UK NORTH SEA TO ENQUEST 24 January 2017, BP announced it has agreed to sell part of its interests in the Magnus oil field and some associated pipeline infrastructure in the UK northern North Sea and in the Sullom Voe Terminal (SVT) on Shetland to EnQuest. Included in the agreement are: 25% of BP’s 100% stake in Magnus, 25% of BP’s interests in a number of associated pipelines and a 3% interest in the Sullom Voe Terminal from BP Exploration Operating Company Limited’s (BPEOC) current total 12% stake. The sale price of $85 million is expected to be met by EnQuest from the sharing of future cash flows from the assets and the agreement will not include any upfront payment to BP. Subject to partner, regulatory and other third party approvals, operatorship of both Magnus and SVT will transfer from BP to EnQuest on completion. The sale will not affect BP’s rights to capacity in SVT. Under the terms of the agreement, EnQuest has an option, exercisable between 1 July 2018 and 15 January 2019, to purchase BP’s remaining 75% interest in Magnus, a further 9% interest in SVT and the remainder of BP’s interests in the associated pipelines for a consideration of $300 million. Under this option, after the recovery of consideration and adjustments, BP would also retain 50% of net cash flows from these assets, up to a limit of $1 billion. The consideration for this further acquisition would be met by EnQuest through a mixture of cash and future asset cash flows. Source: BP

VERSALIS: AGREEMENT WITH SONATRACH FOR FEASIBILITY STUDIES FOR CHEMICAL COMPLEX IN ALGERIA 26 January 2017, Versalis (Eni) and SONATRACH signed in Algiers a Memorandum of Understanding to carry out joint feasibility studies for an integrated petrochemical complex to be built in Algeria. The agreement follows the cooperation agreement signed by Eni and SONATRACH last November and provides for the terms of a study aiming at enhancing hydrocarbons with value added petrochemical products through the development, in Algeria, of one or a few worldscale industrial petrochemical facilities. This agreement represents an opportunity for Versalis to collaborate with an integrated oil corporation, to which the Italian chemical producer will offer its industrial experience in managing large petrochemical plants, and the access to its proprietary technologies, within the framework of strategic joint projects.
