We can, we care

Editorial: Colin Chinery

Oiltanking is one of the world’s leading independent storage partners for oils, chemicals, gases and dry bulk. A focus on customer solutions and partnershipled growth has resulted in a massive expansion across five continents; its latest venture, an innovative project in the fastrising and environmentally conscious South African port of Saldanha Bay.

Close to the strategic tanker routes between key oil-producing regions and major markets, Saldanha Bay, 60 nautical miles northwest of Cape Town, is South Africa’s largest natural anchorage and port with the deepest waters. It is also seen as the rising location for the global crude transhipment hub, and ideally situated for the blending of West African and South American crude oils. Now a new commercial crude oil storage and blending terminal is set for Saldanha following an agreement involving Oiltanking, world leading independent storage partners for oils, chemicals, gases and dry bulk. With a total capacity of 13.2 million barrels stored in twelve 1.1 million bbls concrete tanks, the terminal is a joint venture between Oiltanking subsidiary OTGC

Oiltanking Holdings - an independent bulk liquid storage provider in South Africa - and Mining, Oil and Gas Services (MOGS), the South African based black-owned BEE accredited company. The partnership brings together Oiltanking’s world class expertise in bulk liquids handling and MOGS’s focus on providing products and services to the mining, oil and gas services industry in South Africa and neighbouring countries. The Saldanha Bay venture typifies the enterprise of Oiltanking, which over the last four decades has expanded to become the world’s second-largest company in this highly competitive field. With 75 terminals in 23 countries across Europe, North and South America, the Middle East and Asia, this amounts to a total storage capacity of more than 23.1 million cubic meters. Clients include private and state oil companies, refiners, petrochemical companies and traders in petroleum products and chemicals. And Oiltanking also offers through its subsidiaries and joint ventures, engineering, procurement and construction services to the oil and gas industry.

‘WE CAN – WE CARE’ The latest South African deal underscores Oiltanking’s ‘We Can; We Care’ business philosophy. Saldanha Bay is acknowledged as an area of important environmental value. And with industrial development carefully monitored, the oil terminal project’s authorisation by the Department of Environmental Affairs and Development Planning was the conclusion of a two year assessment. Eight specialist studies were undertaken by independent experts as part of the Environmental Impact © Shell

construction and operations conducted a marine oil pollution control study in addition to the EIA, to ensure any environmental risks are understood and addressed. With the existing jetty already capable of handling vessels up to VLCC (very large crude carrier) size, the new crude oil terminal will be built as a state-of-the-art facility in line with the highest technical, operational and environmental standards.

And as part of its environmental mission, OTMS will oversee a highly innovative form of tank construction. Should an oil leak develop in one of the tanks, the oil will be collected in a separate layer underneath and relayed to a collection point from where it will be pumped back into the tanks.

Hamburg-headquartered Oiltanking - a subsidiary of the Marquard & Bahls Group - is the second largest independent tank storage provider for petroleum products, chemicals and gases, with a wide portfolio of storage and dry bulk services to oil and petrochemical companies, refineries and traders.

CUSTOMER ORIENTATION Between the world’s oil fields and the users of derivative products, independent terminal networks like Oiltanking perform vital connecting services. “We employ a decentralised management structure in which each facility functions as an autonomous Profit Centre,” the company explains. “By nature we have a strong orientation towards customer satisfaction. Often we develop and operate our business with reputable local, private and state-owned companies, with Oiltanking acting

as operating partner in the joint venture.” To customers, Oiltanking serves as a trustworthy custodian of valuable products; to business partners, the proven ability to manage terminals profitably.

“Let us do what we do best, allowing you to focus your people, time, and money on what you do best” In developing capital-intensive terminal facilities alone—or with substantial local business partners — the financial strength of parent company Marquard & Bahls is clearly

a valuable resource. “To further improve our shareholders value we continue to employ a strategy of controlled growth of our tank terminal-based service network through acquisitions, new buildings and upgrading of existing facilities,” the company says. A recent acquisition – by subsidiary Oiltanking Deutschland – was the BayWa tank terminal in Deggendorf. Located directly on the River Danube and with road and rail connections, its 14 tank / 25,000m3 capacity - is used for diesel and heating oil storage. Oiltanking believes the facility fulfils “an important function in supplying the regions of Lower Bavaria, the Bavarian Forest and Western Austria via barge or railcar.” Oiltanking attributes its strong position to a pronounced focus on customer satisfaction and high level professionalism. “We are proud of our de-centralised management

Oiltanking organisation. It’s a structure in which each facility functions as an autonomous profit centre, nourishing the flexibility and entrepreneurial spirit of the company. “When searching for an optimum solution to the customers’ needs, Oiltanking takes a ‘GLOCAL’ approach by applying its GLObal experience and supplementing it with the loCAL flavour,” the company says.

FOCUS ON CORE OUTSOURCE THE REST With industry access to capital limited, Oiltanking believes capital should be targeted to the core aspects of each business rather than deployed in non-core activities. “Let us do what we do best, allowing you to focus your people, time, and money on what you do best. We have many successful examples of outsourced projects – from our independent bulk-liquids business to cross-country pipelines to green-field site developments supporting chemical production plants. “And, because of our focused support, you always will feel in control when you outsource to us.”

STORAGE The successful handling of petroleum products, chemicals, and gases has made Oiltanking the preferred storage provider for a wide range of companies. And with a substantial growth of biofuel production and trade, Oiltanking has responded by offering storage capacities for biofuels in key regions. Currently biodiesel, bioethanol as well as vegetable oils can be stored at Oiltanking terminals in Europe, North America, South America and Asia, with the guarantee that biofuel quality remains constant over the Port of Ngqura duration.

DRY BULK United Bulk Terminals, the Dry Bulk Division of Oiltanking is becoming a leading global provider of dry bulk material handling services for mining companies, producers, refiners, trading houses and industrial end users. It also offers Logistic Chain Management for ocean freight, inland barge services and trucking and rail services. “United Bulk Terminals follows Oiltanking’s strategy of controlled growth,” the company says. “Benefiting from the global presence and international diversity of the Oiltanking group, we can follow our

customers to new markets, forming when required, joint ventures and partnerships.”

AVIATION FUEL HANDLING Skytanking - a subsidiary of Marquard & Bahls - is one of the few international companies offering independent aviationfuel-handling services to airlines, airports, and oil companies. Whether a new airport looking for a turnkey solution to aviation fuel needs, or an oil company or an airline seeking to re-develop or outsource jet fuel facilities, Skytanking has a solution tailored to specific needs. JOINT-VENTURES Oiltanking’s controlled internationalexpansion strategy includes the development of an individual-terminal network–through acquisitions and joint ventures with local private companies, consortiums and government bodies.
