‘Fair price’

Borkum ready to challenge energy’s big players Editorial: Colin Chinery

With 38 of its 40 turbines completed and Phase 2 initially scheduled soon to commence, Europe’s first fully large-scale municipal offshore venture, Trianel Windpark Borkum, is set to deliver its first megawatthour of power later this year. And climatefriendly electricity at competitive prices is the major objective, says Trianel Windkraftwerk Borkum’s Managing Director, Klaus Horstick. classic, ‘Riddle of the Sands’ which anticipated the unfolding of World War 1, a century on and 45 kilometres to the north, is Trianel Windpark Borkum, - the wind farm that will become Europe’s first

fully large-scale municipal offshore venture. The €1.6bn two-phase venture of German utility company Trianel Windkraftwerk Borkum, the 56 square-kilometre project is scheduled to generate 1,200GWh annually - enough it is predicted, to power nearly 250,000 households. In the direct vicinity of the Alpha Ventus – Germany’s first offshore windfarm, also known as Borkum West - and anchored at water depths of 25 to 35 metres, the installation of Trianel’s Areva’s M5000 turbines began last September. And with 38 of the 40 completed and Phase 2 initially scheduled soon to commence, Trianel Windpark Borkum will deliver its first megawatt-hour of power later

Trianel Windkraftwerk Borkum this year. Trianel Borkum’s is a doublestrike strategy: to jointly produce renewable generation less dependent on the four large energy corporations, and offering climate-friendly electricity at a fair price.

SIGNIFICANT STEP And says Trianel Windkraftwerk Borkum’s Managing Director Klaus Horstick, Borkum is a significant step for wind farm development in the North Sea. “Construction started in September 2011 with ramming works. And with the power station Dolwin Alpha starting trial operation this July, altogether it will have taken us six-anda-half years from establishing the project company in January 2008. “Every completion of an offshore wind farm is a big gain of industrial experience. Realising offshore projects of this size still goes hand in hand with a lot of learning.” With continuous technological development the main driver for cost reductions in offshore energy generation, Mr Horstick says Borkum is pushing the boundaries of expertise. “Materials, construction vessels and engineering know-how are all still advancing, so any further project can be realised with the advance elimination of possible risks. “And with completion of the first phase, we will have spent more than one billion euro. This already includes several infrastructure investments for the second phase. “ The decision if and when the second phase will be started, has yet to be made by the © Shell

shareholders, says Mr Horstick. “Assuming that the experience of the first phase will ease the further progress, we are expecting lower costs.” Climate-friendly electricity at competitive prices is the major objective, says Mr Horstick. “Trianel Windfarm Borkum is the first offshore project to be realized that is exclusively owned by municipal energy suppliers. “Our mission is to actively take

part in the German energy transition – the so-called “Energiewende”. Why should we leave it to the big four to invest in renewable energies on such a big scale? “We wanted to prove that realizing a 400 Megawatt wind farm can also be shouldered

by municipal energy suppliers. Any of our power generation projects – conventional as well as renewable – aims to increase our shareholders’ and customers’ independence from the large energy corporations.” Will customers continue to receive these competitive rates on their energy bills or will prices fluctuate?

GOVERNMENTAL DRIVE “With the governmental drive to increase the Green energy share, renewable energies earn a guaranteed refund financed by an additional contribution of all customers – the so-called ‘EEGUmlage’.” (The German Renewable Energies Act introduced in 2000 to promote the development of renewable Port ofenergies) Ngqura

“This way, operators of offshore wind farms gain reliability for their planning and investments. Due to the massively increasing share of renewables among the total power generation this contribution rose from 3.5 Cent per kWh in 2012 to 6.24 Cent per kWh in 2014. Borkum’s 5-Megawatt turbines, each capable of producing enough electricity to power 4,000 to 5,000 homes, are designed and manufactures by Areva Wind, the Bremerhaven-based subsidiary of the French nuclear company and a key partner in this project. The first wind turbine of the 5 megawatt class worldwide and developed specifically for offshore installation, the M5000 was installed in open sea for the first time in the Alpha Ventus test field, and the subsequent experience in ‘real’

offshore conditions will be used in further developments. The benefits of the Areva M5000 are significant, says Mr Horstick. “It offers a comparatively low weight of nacelle and rotor which allows easy transport and installation as well as cost-saving tripods. “Another plus is that the small number of moving components reduces deterioration and the risk of damages – as already proved in the Alpha Ventus wind farm – with the promise of maximum reliability.” Will further commercial windfarms feature in Trianel Windkraftwerk Borkum over the next 2-3 years? “There are no plans for further offshore projects so far except from Phase II. But another subsidiary of Trianel, Trianel Onshore Wind, already owns three onshore wind farms in Germany.

“It continues to grow, and in the medium term intends to build up onshore capacities with a total of 150 Megawatt.”

OFFSHORE WIND RENEWABLE BEST With the on-going controversy surrounding wind farms, and accusations that they are both expensive to construct and inefficient in power delivery, Mr Horstick is resolute in his support. “Offshore wind farms are indeed expensive, but the weather

conditions at sea result in steady power generation – more reliable than any other renewable source. “In addition, the turbines are installed and operated in a place and in a way that keeps impact to humans and animals to an absolute minimum. “So among all the renewables options, it is beyond any dispute that the twin goals of security of supply and environmental sustainability are best reached by offshore wind.”

As a leading owner and operator of classed wind farm support vessels Sure Wind Marine specialises in providing crew and cargo transfer services to the offshore wind market. With a state of the art classed fleet, including Damen twin axe 2610, and Incat Crowther P Class vessels, manned with exceptional crew, Sure Wind Marine services the leading names in the industry. Our fleet and experienced crew provide us with the capabilities required to support the wide range of operations needed for the construction, operation and maintenance of an offshore wind farm. That is exactly what we have been doing at the Borkum West II offshore wind park

for Trianel. We started the operations in April 2014 and have been successfully operating up to now with over 1000 safe Pax transfers conducted. Our reliable classed vessels holding the German ‘Gleichwertigkeit’ certificates have been operating uninterrupted during the demanding weather conditions at the German Bight giving the customer the possibility to proceed un-prohibited with their time sensitive schedule. With an intensive recruitment process, we endeavour to recruit and retain the best people for each job. The same applied for the Trianel project were the thoroughly selected and well trained crew acting under the strictest HSE regulations

and under the supervision of our technical director and superintend have been fulfilling our customers’ requirements, with almost 2,000 man hours worked, and zero LTI’s to report. The vast maritime experience both of our offshore personnel and of our management team, has established Sure Wind Marine as company with safety and customer service at the heart of everything it does. At Sure Wind, we have both a growing fleet of crew transfer vessels and employees who have the skills, flexibility and enthusiasm to meet whatever challenges are standing upon. Doing the job – ontime, safely, reliably, with customer focus – it’s what we do.
