Good Vibrations Enmin – a juggernaut in vibratory and product handling equipment – laugh about how creating their bespoke designs could be both a blessing and a curse “It’s horrible!” exclaims Anthony Gallaher. “We do have a flaw in our business – we sell no spare parts. It’s not necessary. Nothing breaks. We build things to last. It drives me nuts.” With plenty of doom and gloom currently surrounding us, it was especially uplifting to talk to Anthony, General Manager at Enmin, a company that, despite the above, is soaring to

AUGUST / SEPTEMBER 2021
NEWS
New financial year: important changes for employers Employers should be aware of a number of important changes to payroll and other obligations with the start of the new financial year,” says Innes Willox, Chief Executive of the national employer association Ai Group. “The recent Fair Work Commission Annual Wage Review decision increased national minimum wages by 2.5%. For awards in most industries, the increase is operative from the first full pay period that starts on or after 1 July 2021. For a small number of awards in the retail and hospitality industries, the increase will be operative later this year. “Also, from 1 July the high-income threshold under the Fair Work Act increased to $158,500. If an employee is not covered by an award or enterprise agreement, they must have an annual rate of earnings less than the high-income threshold in order to pursue an unfair dismissal case.” Mr Willox said that from 1 July, the Superannuation Guarantee rose from 9.5% to 10%.
He said the cap on concessional super contributions made into employees’ super funds also rose from $25,000 to $27,500 per annum from 1 July. Employees who previously only paid the amount up to the cap would need to be conscious of the higher cap and to advise their employer if they wished to contribute the higher amount. Also, from 1 July the Superannuation Guarantee maximum contribution base increased to $58,920 per quarter and $235,680 per year. Employers who do not pay beyond the maximum contributions base will need to be conscious of the higher amount. “Other super changes will come into effect later this year following the passage of the Your Super Your Future bill. As part of this legislation, there will be a major change to superannuation arrangements in respect of new employees. These will apply from 1 November this year (rather than 1 July as was originally proposed) and will apply only in respect of new employees who do not actively choose a superannuation fund.
“From 1 November, employers will need to check with the Australian Tax Office (ATO) whether a new employee already has a superannuation fund and, if so, will be required to pay super contributions into the existing (“stapled”) account. Employers’ default accounts will only be relevant if the ATO confirms
that employees do not already have a superannuation account.” Mr Willox concluded by saying the tax rate for companies with an aggregated turnover under $50 million had fallen from 26% to 25%. For all other companies, the tax rate would continue to be 30%.

EDITORIAL PUBLISHER SCOTT FILBY
New jobs sectioned and government grants Industry Update Media is excited to announce that from the August/September 21edition, we published a dedicated employment section in Industry Update Magazine and on our Manufacturing Search Engine. Like most businesses, Industry Update has at times struggled to find the right people - or any people for that matter, via specific employment sites. Many businesses are also inundated with responses from applicants that have no qualifications or are over-qualified. Manufacturers generally require staff that have a specific set of skills and qualifications but finding such people can be costly in both time and resource so what better place to advertise manufacturing positions vacant than in Australia’s leading manufacturing media platforms! I am also over the moon happy to see that the Morrison government has kept their word and are now rolling out grants for manufacturers. Please see an extract from the
minister’s column on page 10. To turbo-charge our economic recovery, applications have now opened for funding under the $800 million Manufacturing Collaboration Stream, the largest element of our $1.5 billion Modern Manufacturing Strategy. Grants under another key element of the Strategy – the Supply Chain Resilience Initiative – have also opened, with $50 million available in the first round. The Manufacturing Collaboration Stream is providing funding of between $20 million and $200 million to cover up to 33 per cent of eligible expenditure for industry-led projects across the six National Manufacturing Priority areas. Funding from the Stream will back projects that encourage private sector investment and create jobs through collaboration between businesses and with researchers. See page 10 for the full article.
EDITOR BRONWYN HARDY
Welcome to my first issue With the global landscape being so unsettled, it’s great to be coming on board a publication that connects Australian businesses, supports local production and encourages economic growth. We can all look forward to enjoying the results of the government’s recent $1.5billion investment into its Modern Manufacturing Strategy (MMS). A project that will make us more competitive and resilient, it is set to create jobs both now and for future generations of Australians. Focussing on six key spheres, the initiative promises to play to our strengths, targeting areas where we have an advantage or a strategic priority. A detailed breakdown of the fund distribution can be found in our Minister for Industry, Science and Technology Christian Porter’s column. Among the recipients is Omnia who is using its $563,000 grant from the MMF (Modern Manufacturing Fund) towards an upcoming $2.25million project, as featured in this issue. Although new at my post, I have already
been inspired by companies and individuals forging forward within the industry, including Anthony Meyer of Bryopin. Pioneers of sous vide cooking in this country, and with clients such as Woolworths and Harris Farm on the books, Bryopin is a family business proving that with innovation, expertise and communication anything can be achieved. Salivating over their cuisine on the website was all in a day’s work. Another example is Enmin, makers of vibratory and product-handling equipment. Here, general manager Anthony Gallaher is taking his thriving business to even greater heights. Having created machinery so reliable and bespoke that it “never breaks” he now has plans to evolve Enmin further. We are excited to announce the new inclusion of a job section here, too, at Industry Update. For more information on this, please contact Scott Filby scott@industryupdate.com. au or Dominic Tusa dominic@industryupdate. com.au Remember to keep safe and happy reading.

FINANCE NEWS
Manufacturers face short-term headwinds but the future is brighter By Matthew Bunny, economist at St.George, anticipates opportunities amid the grim realities The pandemic has underpinned a turbulent period for many Australian businesses, including manufacturers.
the vaccine rollout. The eventual recovery in activity will also flow onto demand for manufactured goods.
The extended lockdown in NSW presents a fresh hurdle for businesses in the state. However, beyond this disruption, there are encouraging signs for manufacturers.
Difficulty in finding labour because of the shutdown of international and interstate borders is a headwind for the sector. In May, job vacancies in manufacturing rose to a record high of over 20,000 – up almost 70% on February 2020. These data date back to 2009.
At the time of writing, we anticipate the lockdown in New South Wales which commenced in late June will run to the end of October. However, it is an evolving situation. There are also restrictions in place in Victoria, the Northern Territory and the Australian Capital Territory. We expect the lockdown in New South Wales, alongside the containment measures in several other states, will drive national economic activity to contract by over 2.5% in the September quarter. In turn, growth this year will now be around 2.4% rather than closer to 5%, as we expected before the lockdowns. This is a large reduction and means economic growth will be slightly below the long-run average. However, importantly, next year we expect economic growth to accelerate and the unemployment rate to head to 4%. Manufacturers’ ability to operate has been impacted by the restrictions, although there are exemptions for some critical workers in the industry. The shutdown of parts of the construction industry across Sydney will also ripple upstream to manufacturing. Of course, outside of locked down areas, manufacturers can operate more freely, albeit subject to more stringent health and safety regulations than usual. New government support announced in response to the lockdown will help to cushion the blow to manufacturers. In particular, the New South Wales government’s JobSaver program – a wage subsidy scheme which is providing businesses with up to $100,000 per week – will help to keep workers in jobs and aid cashflow. A range of other grants and tax relief measures have also been announced. The upshot is the economy tends to bounce back quickly once restrictions are eased. If the lockdown in New South Wales does not drag on past September, and other states avoid extended lockdowns, we expect the economy will rebound sharply in the December quarter. However, this hinges on the evolution of outbreaks and progress in

The pandemic has posed other challenges for manufacturing.
Supply chain disruptions have also been an impediment for the industry. In an April survey conducted by the Australian Bureau of Statistics, 10% of manufacturers indicated they had been severely impacted by supply chain disruptions. This captures major shipping delays and material shortages that have had a significant impact on revenue. The ongoing lockdown in New South Wales will add to interstate supply disruptions. In addition, freight costs have skyrocketed alongside a global shortage of shipping containers. This is because lockdowns around the world underpinned a dramatic shift in consumer demand towards goods and away from services, in turn pushing up trade volumes. At the same time, there has been congestion at some ports as increased demand coincided with reduced capacity due to pandemic restrictions. However, it is worth highlighting that in the same survey 90% of Australian manufacturers indicated they either had not experienced supply chain disruptions, or if they had, the disruptions only had a small impact. The manufacturing sector was in good shape heading into the recent wave of lockdowns. Manufacturing output was back around its pre-pandemic level in the March quarter. And there has been strong growth in manufacturing capital expenditure – it jumped a whopping 15% in the March quarter to its highest level since 2012. Generous government tax incentives, like temporary full expensing, have helped boost investment. Plus, the Australian Industry Group’s monthly purchasing manager’s index hit a record high in June, with data dating back to 1992. The reading of 63.2 indicates very strong growth – a reading above 50 indicates an expansion. There was also record take up of
Matt Bunny - Economist at St.George
industrial real estate in the June quarter, partly reflecting the ongoing expansion in manufacturing activity. The boom in e-commerce and the need to warehouse more stock alongside the disruptions to transport networks also been important contributors to the strong growth. And while the pandemic poses challenges for manufacturers, it has also created opportunities.
products. The government has noted medicine, personal protective equipment and fertilisers as points of focus. Looking ahead, the eventual widespread rollout of vaccines will reduce the likelihood of further lockdowns and allow international borders to reopen, alleviating some of the current pressures on the industry.
The breakdown in global supply chains has pushed businesses to reassess the resilience of their networks. Some businesses may seek to diversify their supply network to avoid dependency on a particular country.
It has been a tumultuous period for the manufacturing industry. But beyond the short-term headwinds, the future looks much brighter.
Importantly for Australian manufacturers, there is a push to scale up domestic production capabilities for critical

Anthony Meyer, Managing Director, took the reins from his father and uncle, twin brothers who founded the company, in what has become the quintessential family business. Observing the sous vide method while in the United States, the brothers, Nicholas and Michael Meyer, both engineers, spotted an opportunity. Here in Australia, they began experimenting with this unique style of cooking, which locks in flavour and results in produce that has a shelf life of up to 12 weeks. The challenge was in obtaining the necessary equipment. Sous vide appliances were primarily available in only France or Germany at that time and transporting them all the way to Australia wasn’t really a viable option. It was then that these engineers became innovators, creating their own sous vide equipment from scratch. The result, Anthony describes as being a “down-to-earth, usable system for sous vide, which is very effective and commercially successful.” The founders inspired the current generation of management on many fronts establishing an ethos that has seen employees work harmoniously side-byside and business flourish. “My dad and uncle set down really good standards about work ethics and respect and we, as a family, follow those. It’s quite intriguing to some people that we all get along. They wonder how I work with my brother, my cousin and my sister, but there is no big secret other than we communicate well. We’ve got a job to do, and we do it together,” Anthony says. The core competency of this job involves cooking meat and vegetables in the traditional sous vide style using the equipment designed by Nicholas and Michael. “Cooking is akin to any food manufacturing, and we supply to so many different industries including retail, hospitals, aged care facilities, restaurants and more.” Anthony describes Bryopin as “the brand behind the brand” in the retail sector. Manufacturing products for Woolworths, Aldi and Costco, they also provide for independent grocers such as IGA and Harris Farm. The company is a driving force when it comes to opting for Australian Made products, “It’s so important on so many levels. In the meat industry, Australian meat is exported all over the world and respected all over the world as being very high quality. Australia has consistent high placings in the World Steak Challenge. So, our produce and the Australian brand is paramount on the world scale, and domestically, consumers want to see Australian Made. People want to support

Australian Made, and certainly anything we put on retail shelves is 100% Australian manufactured and the vast majority is from Australian produce.” While Bryopin have enjoyed exponential local growth, they have been accredited to export to Hong Kong, Singapore and the Middle
East and are looking forward to exploring this opportunity post-pandemic. On considering future expansion, the company approached St.George bank and felt it was the right fit. “We’re at a huge investment stage, and it was really important that we choose the right partner. We approached the market and did a full review and we have been so happy
with what St.George has put forward. Not just from the structure of what they’ve given us, or the price of what they’ve given us, but the whole package. We looked at what came back from the market and St.George pretty much ‘won’ on every point. So, we feel really comfortable going through this next stage of investment with them,” Anthony explains. In the face of inevitable Covid setbacks, Bryopin’s future continues to look bright, with the company planning to consolidate space and merge their current 13 factories into one. “We’re investing to put everything under one roof. It’s going to give us a lot more space, a lot more efficiency and a lot more room to implement more technology.” One glance at Bryopin’s website is guaranteed to have you anticipating your next meal. Whether their extensive and varied client base is after smokybarbequed meats, comforting casseroles, plant-based dishes or spicy Mexicaninspired cuisine, this company can deliver. Considering all the mouth-watering meals the company has to offer, readers may be curious to know what Bryopin’s current best-seller is... “Probably the pork ribs we do for Woolworths,” Anthony reveals. “They are a ripper of a product, really, really good and they’re flying off the shelves.” Consider them added to our shopping list, Anthony. INDUSTRY POLITICS
National Manufacturing Grants
The Hon Christian Porter MP – Parliament of Australia, Minister for Industry, Science, & Technology The Morrison Government continues to deliver for Australian manufacturers, with a range of important initiatives and new funding opportunities announced in recent months. Australia’s economic recovery has been faster and stronger than expected. Our manufacturing sector is going from strength to strength, with business conditions at record highs and more Australians in work than ever before. The first round of the Supply Chain Resilience Initiative is providing matched grants of between $50,000 and $2 million. These grants will support projects addressing supply chain vulnerabilities
across medicines and agricultural production chemicals, identified as sectors of focus in the Sovereign Manufacturing Capability Plan. Successful projects have also been announced under Round 2 of the Manufacturing Modernisation Fund (MMF), the Modern Manufacturing Initiative (MMI), and the Commercialisation Fund. Round 1 of the Translation and Integration streams of the MMI is providing a total of $13.9 million in grants to four space manufacturers to help them integrate into the global supply chain. Additionally, five medical product manufacturers will share in $36 million to scale-up production. This includes $3 million to help Perth-based Avicena Systems scale up manufacturing of its Sentinel COVID-19 screening system, which can be used to rapidly test more than 90,000 people every day.
Bonissimo Coffee Roasters from Western Australia will use its grant to install new equipment to manufacture cups and pods that are fully compostable, while increasing its coffee pod production six-fold.
In South Australia, Noumed Pharmaceuticals will receive $20 million towards construction of a new $85 million manufacturing facility for prescription and over-the-counter medications. As a result, the company’s Australian operations will become almost entirely self-sufficient, while also creating hundreds of new jobs.
Other successful projects include: a digital health sensor produced in Queensland that sticks to the skin and can provide early warning of cardiac issues and a brewery expansion in New South Wales that will use thermal energy storage to reduce power consumption and chemical use.
Under Round 2 of the MMF, $55 million in grants was awarded to 86 businesses to support investment by manufacturers in modern technologies and equipment. This will increase productivity and capability and create new jobs.
Six companies shared in funding under the Government’s $30 million Commercialisation Fund, which brings together industry and researchers on job-creating projects. One of them, Perth-based Alcolizer, is developing a mass
market saliva-based antigen test which can detect COVID-19 within 10 minutes. The Morrison Government sees the value of our businesses and that is why we are backing them to innovate and create jobs right across our country. Our Modern Manufacturing Strategy is also backed by the Morrison Government’s support to take on new apprentices and trainees, lowering taxes and the cost of energy and cutting red tape. Calm and common sense needed on lockdowns We need some common sense injected into discussions on when and if to lock down and some forward thinking about what living with Covid will look like when high vaccination levels are reached, says Innes Willox, Chief Executive of the national employer association, Ai Group. "Business looks to government for leadership and this should be based on more than health advice. Local eradication may be possible in the short term, but it is an impossible long-term goal when considering that this virus will be present around the world for many years to come,” he said. “We need to avoid panicked responses and governments need to weigh health and broader advice, including on mitigating the harsh economic impacts of tough restrictions and lockdowns,” he said "There is a danger that competitive federalism may be becoming a contest over which premier can pull the lockdown trigger first. This isn’t the gunfight at the OK Corral.” Mr Willox added that governments also needed to be careful of their language and not to needlessly scare people. The recent
imposition of restrictions in South Australia without a single case risked being seen as an overreaction. “Business calls on state and territory leaders to prioritise testing and tracing, which has in many cases achieved the same results as the harshest of restrictions but with less impact on lives and livelihoods,” said Mr Willox. "The losers in the kneejerk lockdown contest are the community and the businesses that provide goods, services and jobs."
However, Mr Willox conceded that while the Sydney lockdown would be highly disruptive for business and the community, it was clear the Government was appropriately considering the balance between health and the economy in its decision making. He also welcomed the Covid exit plan announced by the Australian Government, describing it as a major step forward that finally delivers some hope to the Australian community. “The comprehensive pathway out of Covid addresses many of the concerns
raised by Ai Group and the business community generally. The Prime Minister, Premiers and Chief Ministers are to be commended for reaching this agreement. It is crucial that all National Cabinet members stick to it.” “The National Cabinet jointly accepting that it is time to think about moving on from suppression to living with Covid is a giant leap forward, as are plans for ending lockdowns, reducing quarantine periods and allowing home quarantine,” he concluded. Meanwhile, Tim Piper, the Victorian Head of the Ai Group has welcomed the announcement by the Victorian Government that it is to remove the requirement on the use of masks in many workplaces. Masks are no longer required in factories and offices, but masks are still necessary in public facing jobs such as retail and hospitality. “The changes will encourage more people to return to offices and make working in a factory far easier,” he said. Applications for manufacturing funding close September 9 The Australian Government has published guidelines for manufacturers who wish to apply for funding of between $20 million and $200 million for large-scale projects. As part of the Collaboration Stream of the $1.5 billion Modern Manufacturing Strategy, $800 million has been allocated to encourage collaboration on major job-creating projects. This funding will cover up to 33% of eligible project expenditure. Project funding under the Collaboration Stream will support business-to-business and business-to-research collaboration across the Government’s six national manufacturing priority areas – medical products, clean energy and recycling, food and beverage, defence, space and resource technology and critical minerals. Applications can be lodged between 11th August and 9th September. Minister for Industry, Science and Technology Christian Porter said the Collaboration Stream will see the Government strategically invest in projects that help manufacturers to scale up and create jobs, with investment targeted at supporting projects within the National Manufacturing Priorities. “Australians know that strong, successful manufacturing businesses make for a stronger country.

Welding safety at the forefront of new research To create a better understanding of workers’ exposure to welding fumes in Australia, the NSW Government’s Centre for Work Health and Safety is conducting new research. Together with the University of Sydney and Curtin University, the Centre is focusing on broadening the knowledge of Australian welding industries and occupations, current controls being used and the effectiveness in risk mitigation. SafeWork Director, Research and Evaluation, Skye Buatava said it’s important to understand which intervention strategies are effective in reducing people’s exposure to harmful welding fumes. “The long-latency period for occupational cancers and diseases, can cause a significant challenge to establish a direct connection between welding fume exposure and lung cancer,” said Ms Buatava. Lead researcher, Professor Tim Driscoll said: “Welding is a crossindustry technology and there is limited
knowledge about this high-risk activity and the risk profiles among welders in Australia. We want to know who is being exposed to these fumes, and what their levels of exposure are. This information is needed so appropriate control measures can be designed that minimise exposures as much as possible.” The research is being undertaken in a bid to learn how different workers or industries use personal protective equipment, the equipment’s effectiveness as well as a workers’ understanding of the long-term harm. A specialised cancer agency of the World Health Organisation, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), recently reclassified welding fumes from ‘possibly carcinogenic to humans', to ‘carcinogenic to humans'. It concluded that there is sufficient evidence in humans supporting that welding fumes cause cancer in the lungs (and a positive association has been observed with cancer of the kidneys).
“The recent reclassification of welding fumes carcinogenicity has highlighted the need to better understand exposure to the fumes in a practical setting in order to protect NSW workers from long-term
harm,” Ms Buatava said. For more information visit the Centre for Work, Health and Safety website at https://www. centreforwhs.nsw.gov.au/

High Court puts an end to casual employment mess The Australian High Court has made a historic decision on casual employment. Due to the significance of this decision, Industry Update has decided to republish the Australian Resources & Energy Group's response in full, as a representative of the voice of industry. Australian Resources and Energy Group AMMA welcomes the High Court of Australia today overturning a controversial Federal Court ruling that a casually employed mine worker was actually a permanent employee and entitled to back-paid leave entitlements.
The High Court also reinforced longstanding commonly understood principles of employment law which were seemingly set aside in the earlier Federal Court decisions, including that the express

Court had erred in its interpretations.”
AMMA Chief Executive Steve Knott AM, said “common sense had finally prevailed” in today’s decision. “The uncertainty in this area stretches back to 2016 when the Federal Circuit Court first flipped the common understanding of casual employment on its head in the Skene matter. This was compounded by similar findings of the Full Federal Court in Rossato,” Mr Knott said. “The damage these decisions have had on business confidence in just about every sector of the economy has been enormous. The view from the employer community has always been that the Federal Court was applying a highly novel interpretation that was out-of-step with how casual employment arrangements have worked in practice for many decades.
In its judgement in WorkPac v Rossato, the High Court found the mine worker’s employment was on an “assignment by assignment” basis and there was no “firm advance commitment to ongoing work”, which the Court deemed the critical test for casual employment.

terms of an employment contract are binding for characterising the relationship between an employer and employee.
“While it is disappointing WorkPac had to take the Rossato matter all the way to the High Court, employers strongly welcome the confirmation that the Federal

Just as damaging as the uncertainty these decisions caused, Mr Knott said, was the concept that an employee who worked under a casual contract and received the 25% casual pay loading, could “double dip” by later claiming back-paid leave entitlements. The Morrison Government effectively dealt with this anomaly – which threatened to bankrupt businesses of all sizes - when it passed legislative amendments in relation to casual employment in March. “Given the High Court did not find the issue relevant to today’s decision, the Morrison Government’s decision to deal with retrospective ‘double dipping’ claims earlier this year has been further vindicated,” Mr Knott said. “Had the Federal Opposition and some minority party senators gotten their way and blocked those amendments, the fact today’s High Court judgement offered no views on double dipping claims would have been a disaster for businesses in every sector of the Australian economy.
“The legislation fended off a number of class action litigators, many internationally funded, who were circling Australian employers like sharks hoping to profit off the huge historic liabilities that would have been imposed on small, medium and large businesses.” While today’s decision affects all Australian industries, AMMA notes the Rossato test case comes from the use of labour hire casual employees in the coal mining industry. Over recent weeks the Senate Committee Inquiry into Job Security has heard evidence from multiple industry stakeholders about the small, but very important role labour hire and casual employment plays in the resources sector. Evidence included that labour hire employees in the coal mining industry typically earn around $120,000p.a. on average and that very few – as little as 1% of the total workforce of some employers – have requested conversion to permanency under casual conversion terms enshrined in enterprise agreements.

LAPP develop solar plant as big as 18 football fields LAPP Australia General Manager Simon Pullinger has revealed details of a major green energy project in Austria that his parent company has been involved in. The LAPP Group provided 180km of LAPP Olflex solar cable for a solar power scheme that covers the equivalent of more than six Melbourne Cricket Grounds. The new system, which began operation in Schonkirchen-Reyersdorf near Vienna in November last year, combines 34,600 solar modules to generate 11.5 megawatts, or almost 11 gigawatt-hours of electrical energy a year, corresponding to the consumption of 3,400 households and saving 8,000 tons of carbon dioxide. The big solar plant – Austria’s largest – is still being developed for greater capacity, on a site covering 13.3 hectares. Mr Pullinger says the project also absorbed a wide range of other products available in Australia to withstand the
rigours of outdoor operations at solar and wind farms and clean-green water plants. The global LAPP organisation – with 4,650 employees and turnover well exceeding a billion Euros ($A1.62 billion) – established LAPP Australia in 2018 to serve future-focused industries. These include energy, rail, mobility organisations, manufacturing and plant engineering (including automation, robotics and process engineering systems), electrical engineering systems and energy systems, including wind and solar green energy; machine building and machine tools; food and beverage; automotive, intelligent buildings and infrastructure; and resources industry, including mining and oil and gas process engineering. Mr Pullinger says the family-owned LAPP company prides itself on its farsighted ethos of outstanding innovation, quality, range and service, which has won it many customers in Australia, to the
point that LAPP Australia now has more than 20,000 products online. Live real-time stock checking on the local and German HQ warehouses gives customers greater access to products and rapid lead times for better planning of future-focused automation initiatives, including those taking place locally as a result of Industry 4.0 digital integration and response to global major trends such as clean, green energy and water. Service and precise on-time delivery capabilities were a major factor in the
global company winning the latest solar energy contracts in Austria, where the market for solar for photovoltaics is growing by 50% every year, says Mr Pullinger. LAPP Australia has equipped itself to cater for rapid expansion of this field in Australia, given our abundant natural energy. LAPP Australia 1800 931 559 lappaustralia.com.au

86 manufacturers share $55m in second round of MMF grants The Australian Government has awarded $55 million in grants to businesses across the country in the second round of the Manufacturing Modernisation Fund (MMF). Among the 86 businesses selected, Bonissimo Coffee Roasters in Western Australia will use its grant to help reduce the number of plastic-lined coffee cups and coffee pods ending up in landfill by installing $1.4 million worth of equipment to manufacture cups and pods made from bio-polymers that are 100% organic and fully compostable. The upgrade will also enable the company to increase its coffee pod production six-fold, allowing it to hire more staff and pursue new export opportunities. Other successful projects include: a lightweight digital health sensor produced in Queensland that sticks to the skin and can provide early warning of cardiac issues; new generation high-output solar panels to be made in South Australia; and a brewery expansion in New South Wales that will use world-leading thermal energy storage to reduce power consumption and chemical use. Minister for Industry, Science and Technology Christian Porter said: “Australia’s manufacturing sector is vitally important to our economy, directly 16

The project will create up to 27 new jobs and enable the company to pursue export opportunities for its products; Currumbin Minerals (QLD) will receive $934,686 to establish a $3.8 million minerals sands processing facility using world-leading electrostatic and magnetic heavy minerals separation processes to enable more efficient separation of heavy minerals and rare earths; Medipharm Labs Australia (Vic) will receive $466,577 towards a $1.866 million upgrade of production facilities, enabling it to increase production and greatly increase the purity of its medicinal cannabis products. First Graphene will use its $759,000 grant to carry out a $3 million upgrade of its graphene drying, blending and packaging facilities at its headquarters in Henderson. Graphene has a range of uses in the mining, automotive and battery industries and the company
intends to significantly boost production to capitalise on growing global demand. MMF round two was a competitive, merit-based grants program, with applications assessed by a committee of independent industry experts. Businesses are required to match government funding on a three-to-one basis, with government grants covering up to 25% of eligible project expenditure. The minimum grant amount is $100,000 and the maximum grant amount is $1,000,000. Projects must be completed within two years. The grants are part of the $1.5 billion Modern Manufacturing Strategy and eligible companies need to demonstrate that their products align with one of the Government’s six National Manufacturing Priorities. Those priorities are Resources Technology and Critical Minerals Processing, Food and Beverage, Medical Products, Recycling and Clean Energy, Defence and Space. Datalogic solution enables fast, multi-product scanning Industrial scanners are integrated into most intralogistics applications, as companies seek end-to-end traceability of products and parts. When companies are dealing with high numbers of the same product day in, day out, these scanners are effortlessly efficient, providing high levels of accuracy, and helping to achieve outstanding DIFOTA (delivery in full, on time with accuracy) ratings. But when production facilities adapt to customer needs and begin to develop multiple product lines from the one place, scanners that were ideal for scanning one product line are now presented with a new challenge. Such was the case recently when one of Datalogic’s global customers needed an intralogistics traceability solution where two or three boxes were manually presented prior to palletisation across 16 lines.
beverage, pharmaceutical, electronics, general manufacturing, retail and more. “Datalogic presented a solution that combined its Matrix 320 2MP image reader with customised illuminator, CBX100 connectivity device and BM100 backup module,” explains Mr Giboney. “After a simple installation process, the solution meant the customer could scan multiple products with just as much efficiency and accuracy as they could previously scan just one product,” he said. In this application, the customer prioritised operator comfort, so Datalogic customised its Matrix 320 image readers to use red LEDs, with consistent illumination. “We found that operators much prefer constant illumination, compared with pulsed illumination. Red tends to be easier on the eyes, and doesn’t reflect back as strongly off metallic surfaces,” explains Mr Giboney.
“The ideal solution combining operator comfort with accurate performance came from positioning the scanner high enough overhead that it was out of the line of sight, but maintaining enough illumination to reliably read the codes. We enabled HDR (high dynamic range) so that the lighting could be dimmed considerably, further enhancing operator comfort,” he said. Using Datalogic’s latest software release, Mr Giboney and his team were
“This customer was familiar with Datalogic’s products and knew the company had a good problem-solving mindset, so they approached us for a customised solution that could quickly scan all boxes, even across different product lines,” said the lead account manager responsible for this customer, Mr Phil Giboney, Manufacturing Key Account Manager, Datalogic. Datalogic is a global leader in automatic data capture and process automation, with companies relying on its innovative data scanning solutions to optimise warehouse traceability and efficiency across industries such as factory automation, automotive, food and

also able to use digital inputs to essentially turn off the illumination when not in use, by creating a second image setting that was selectable by using an external input. Datalogic’s Matrix 320 reader offers outstanding scanning performance to achieve higher productivity and an optimised price-to-performance ratio with its advanced 2MP sensor (1920x1080 pixels with a 16:9 form factor), achieving an extra-large field of view (FOV) on the horizontal axis that competes against 3MP readers. Matrix 320 is complemented by Datalogic’s Matrix 120 and Matrix 220, further establishing the company’s world leadership in stationary industrial scanners. “The Matrix 320 reader provides the highest market application flexibility due to its modular design and a reduced number of models with a complete portfolio of lenses, lightings, filters and accessories,” says Mr Giboney.

Super new look coloured Fibreglass safety stair nosing – What a Clever Idea One of Floorsafe Australia’s strategies has always been to give the customer what he wants or what he would like to have. Fibreglass Plus now offer a slip resistant stair nosing that is fully compliant, chemical resistant and gives the customer an option to choose the finished colour which will certainly enhance any stairway.
Our Fibreglass nosing has been a very popular choice over the past two years due to the fact that it is half the price of standard aluminium and a saving of up to $20 a metre on most available metal tread nosings. Although the standard fibreglass have a cost saving and no rust advantages, the finished fibreglass product has very limited chemical resistance and is only available in either yellow or black. So we have taken the advantages of both products and combining them into one competitively priced product that now has many features & benefits.
The new product ‘Fibreglass Plus’ has the same 4mm fibreglass base and produced in 3620mm lengths. Once moulded we have over laid the base with two layers of a 2-part Polyurethane chemical resistant coating. A 30# grade diamond aluminium oxide granule has
also been added giving the new product a superior uniform finish. Colour choice is another advantage. Although available in stock colours, upon request any Australian standard colour can be produced. With Its extra strength, improved chemical resistance, colour
choice & its improved enhanced finish is sure going to make this product very popular. Available in 3620mm lengths or supplied in required cut size lengths. Floorsafe Australia 1300 717 769 www.floorsafe.com.au

COMPRESSORS AND PNEUMATICS Food industry focus: To understand the challenges, you need to be on the factory floor In Australia, the food and beverage sector accounts for 32% of the country’s total manufacturing turnover and is reported to be worth around $122 billion (Octet 2020). New Zealand, on the other hand, is a major food and beverage exporter, with the industry accounting for 46% of all goods and services exports (Mbie.govt.nz (2021). On the global front, the food processing market is expected to grow by 6.04% (CAGR) between 2020 and 2027. This puts pressure on manufactures to fast-track productivity and improve their efficiencies year-on-year. A recent report compiled by Diego Mirabelli, Industry Manager Food for SMC Corporation in Europe showcased the latest food industry trends and highlighted the challenges in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. It details SMC’s presence on the factory floor to identify the industry’s most pressing automation requirements. What’s trending in food automation? Surprisingly, the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic saw a positive uptick in automation. “Companies are changing the way they work. They’re focused on rapidly and continuously addressing challenges around productivity, downtime, energy savings, safety, hygiene and staying competitive in a tough climate.” explains Craig Sheppard, Sales and Marketing Director from SMC Corporation Australia New Zealand. Food security remains an ongoing issue around the world, and Craig believes that automation will play a key role in addressing scarcity in the years to come. “Other issues addressed by manufacturers is that of a reliable workforce, and workforce accessibility. Whilst labour is expensive, COVID-19 enforced lockdowns taught some harsh lessons with respect to
staff accessing workplaces and the need for social distancing created its own set of challenges – especially in plants where productivity (both day and night) is crucial.”
the rod while a pressure sensor can identify any leakages inside the actuators. Here, communication takes place via an IO-link in real-time.”
And while workers will always be needed, many companies are now reassessing the workforce to ensure that they are adding value and making a difference to the company’s bottom line.
2. Productivity linked to automation
When analysing the shift (and embrace) of automation, the report by Diego Mirabelli detailed the following as key drivers:
1. Avoiding downtime
Most food plants operate 24/7, so a halt in food production can be costly and time consuming. Most areas are arranged in a continuous flow with one area being dependent on the activity of another - from primary material integration, to processing, and finally, packaging. The OEE (Overall Equipment Effectiveness) can be substantially improved by applying digital predictive maintenance solutions, training operators, and maximizing product reliability. When analysing automation on the plant, Diego believes that the most critical component is the actuator. The procedure to replace an actuator is fast (usually 10 minutes) when its within reach and is easily accessible. In other cases, it can take up to four hours. Of course, the cost of proactively replacing an actuator will usually be a lot less than the cost of a stop in production. However, to ensure real-time monitoring and pre-empt any issues before they occur, monitoring sensors need to be included as part of the automation control loop. SMC offers two types of sensors. “An induction sensor can calculate the speed of
While this traditional, fast-paced industry has been lagging in automation penetration, robotics, and its stemmed technology (cobots) are key drivers for enhanced productivity and automation on the factory floor. “Some of our team members are dedicated to understanding and developing solutions to complement robotic technologies. We offer gripping technologies and a wide range of plug and play gripper end-effectors for the majority of cobot suppliers.” comments Craig. Answering to the call by industry, SMC offers wireless technology for robotics applications allowing for gripper communications via Wi-Fi, allowing for a reduction in weight and faster installation via reduced cabling requirements. The next step is to introduce smart technologies combining flexible and quick format changes with high cycle rates and low life cycle costs.
Craig Sheppard, Sales and Marketing Director SMC Corporation Australia & New Zealand
are other air usage areas of focus that can be can critically assessed, for which SMC provides a wide array of solutions: condition monitoring tools which provide information such as flow rate and pressure, Automatic Leak Detection System (ALDS) which provides near real time leakage monitoring and a VEX Stand-by Valve, which reduces air consumption during short stops or shuts it off during long ones.
4. Machine Safety and Hygiene
3. Reducing costs by optimising energy efficiency
“Safety and automation work hand-inhand, and safety valves form a fundamental part of our product range” he comments.
Food factories are energy demanding; they represent 19% of the whole manufacturing industry’s energy consumption. “SMC’s energy saving task force can analyse your plant and help you realise savings and efficiency gains.” says Craig.
“Although hygiene has always been a central theme, COVID-19 has driven the message home. Both machine builders and food plants need solutions that are easy to clean and reduce opportunities for contamination.”
Improvement costs may vary but the return on investment is often short. Whilst air leaks are still a common theme, there

Essential components for efficient compressed air systems Apart from the air compressor, which is the main power plant for the generation of compressed air, effective, efficient and reliable industrial systems depend on other components to ensure the delivery of sustainable, contaminantfree air to the end-use application. The ideal configuration and integration of the system components is vital for the enhancement of overall performance and low-maintenance, durable operation.
equipment, especially when the dirt and dust is combined with oil (which is often the case with compressors). Contaminant build-up can form inside valves, motors and other compressed-air equipment. Compressed-air filters integrated along the air lines between the compressor and end use offer a high degree of protection against wear and tear. Quality air filters have a lower pressure-drop than lowquality ones. This will save you energy. Every pressure drop in your system (from filters, dryers, long piping and so on) will require you to set your compressor on a higher setpoint, which will cost you extra electricity.
Air receivers An air receiver, sometimes referred to as a compressed-air tank, is an integral and vitally important part of all compressed-air systems. The receiver acts as storage for excess air to accommodate the peaks of demand from your system and to optimise the running efficiency of your compressor. Short-term, high-demand periods are catered for while reducing pressure drop throughout the system and protecting the integrity of critical pressure applications at end use. Adding air storage capacity to your system decreases loading and unloading demands on the compressor, thereby reducing wear and tear, extending cycle times and cutting energy costs. The most common example of compressed-air receivers is seen with the small, reciprocating, rotary-screw or scroll-type compressors, mounted on a “tank” or air receiver. The compressor operates on a start/stop, load/unload or vsd control system. Receiver-mounted air compressors are ideal for use in small-tomedium demand applications where space is at a premium.
Particulate filters Vertical free-standing and tank-mounted Air Receivers store excess air to cater to peak demands and optimise system efficiency.
In larger industrial applications (usually rotary screw-type compressors), receivers are usually separate vertical-standing units placed in the air supply line along with dryers, oil-water separators and filters. The compressors typically cycle utilising either a load/unload or variable-speed control system. In some engineered circumstances, an air receiver can even continue to supply air while, if required, production plant and equipment is safely shut down. Air receivers make compressed-air systems more energy efficient by allowing the compressor to operate on longer cycle times and with tighter pressure bands. The bigger the air receiver, the more efficient the system.
in the hottest conditions. Investing in a good air dryer will not only ensure your compressed air yields better returns for longer but also help increase your production levels by reducing equipment failure problems due to moisture, reduce loss incurred due to moisture-ruined equipment, and increase overall profits of your business. In short, air dryers are worth every penny spent.
Filters Compressed-air coalescing filters protect end-use equipment from dust, dirt, pollen, oil, water and other contaminants. Contaminants can damage your
Particulate compressed-air filters remove dust and particles from the air. These particles are collected in the filtration material, where they stay until the filter is replaced every few months, depending on operation time and application. Clogged filters increase pressure drop and make filters less effective in removing contaminants.
Coalescing filters Coalescing filters are used to capture oil and/or moisture that is suspended in the compressed air in very tiny droplets. Unlike particulate filters, the filter material collects the small droplets and transfers them to the bottom of the filter, where a condensate drain removes the liquid. Coalescing filters also need to be regularly replaced as contaminants slowly build up in the filtration material.
Air dryers Air dryers are essential for air compressors. Water present in the atmosphere, in the form of vapour and aerosol, is difficult to remove. When compressed, this vapour will condense, allowing liquid to form. Accumulation of this moisture over time can cause serious damage to the compressed-air system, such as corrosion, machine damage and product spoilage. Malfunctioning of control components, in turn, can bring the production processes to a halt, or impair tools, leading to additional maintenance and time costs. As such, air dryers need to be given due importance.
Desiccant Air Dryers are particularly valuable when a very low-pressure dew point is required for sensitive applications.

in the air, condensate in compressed-air systems can’t be avoided. During the compression process, the air is heated then cools as it passes through the system. As it nears the ambient temperature (approach), vapour condenses to liquid and can be removed by mechanical separation utilising a condensate separator.
Servicing and maintaining system components is vital to operator productivity and cost saving The type of Compressed Air Piping should be suited to the application and flow and have a bore that is large enough to handle the demand and system pressure.
Piping Compressed air flows from your air compressor to the end-user equipment through your compressed-air pipeline. It is important that the type of piping is suited to the application and flow and that the pipe bore is large enough to handle the demand and system pressure. As all compressed-air systems will suffer some degree of pressure loss through the pipe system, the type, length, layout and installation of the piping are also very important. There are a few things to keep in mind when installing compressed-air piping, such as water, rust problems, the position of valves, the position of connections and filters, and many other factors. The most common pipe used includes: Pvc: the use of pvc pipe is common but not generally recommended for use with compressed air. While readily available, inexpensive, and easy to install, pvc can sag over time and will require additional supports. The presence of air-compressor oils in the line from the compressed air can accelerate the degradation of pvc. Copper: copper pipe is commonly
AUGUST / SEPTEMBER 2021
recommended for clean air. While it works very well, it is expensive and more difficult to install, because the soldering of joints is time consuming and requires a high degree of skill. Aluminium: with easy-to-install connections, aluminium piping systems are highly recommended for compressedair lines. Aluminium is lightweight, making it easy to handle, and it is highly recommended for most air applications. It is smooth bore, non-corrosive, and usually remains leak-free over the life of the system.
Oil-water separators Quality oil-water separators remove lubricants from condensate for easy, responsible disposal. During normal function, air compressors produce small traces of oil-contaminated condensate. This moisture collects mainly in air receivers, coalescing filter bowls and moisture separators, making it easy to discard. This liquid cannot be discharged into storm water or onto the ground and must be specially collected in order to protect the environment. Because of this unavoidable by-product of using compressed air, an oil-water
Oil-Water Separators remove lubricants from condensate for easy, responsible disposal.
separator is necessary and beneficial for environmentally responsible companies.
Auto drains Auto-drain systems drain out the water that accumulates in air-receiver tanks, air dryers, coalescing filters and other low points in the air-reticulation system. If this condensate is not drained out it can enter the reticulation system, causing damage to pneumatic equipment, valves and actuators, and result in product spoilage. To drain out the water, some systems use a timed drain. Other types use float switches or level sensors to drain out water after it reaches a certain level. Ask your kaishan specialist about which drain is the right one for you.
While thousands of businesses are dependent on compressed-air power, it is obvious that many do not fully understand the importance of maintaining the components to maximise reliability and performance. From the compressors to the delivery piping, it is vital to keep every component leakproof, contaminant free and operating at peak efficiency. Any air leak, degradation, blockage or failure at any point can cause major problems in the system itself and may impact the end application, product or process. System breakdown also means extended downtimes, production loss and costly repairs. With input power costs increasing, the selection of quality components from energy-saving compressors right down the line is critical to ensure reliable, efficient and cost-effective operation. System maintenance and repair services such as those offered by kaishan australia are a great investment in the sustainable, peak-performance operation of all types and makes of compressed-air equipment.

SMC helps Fletcher International Exports realise energy savings From humble beginnings in 1967, Fletcher International Exports has evolved into what can best be described as one of Australia’s greatest agribusiness success stories. Founder Roger Fletcher established the business by purchasing sheep from sale yards and selling them on auction. While much of this private, family-owned business still revolves around lamb and sheep farming and processing, Fletcher has since developed a range of high-quality co-products, ventured into grain exports, and has purchased a company-owned train to assist with logistics. Fletcher operates from two facilities in Dubbo (New South Wales) and Albany (Western Australia); combined, these plants process up to 90 000 sheep per week. Speaking to the forces at play, Gabrielle Ryan, Project Manager at Fletcher, says the industry is privy to various interwoven and uncontrollable factors. “We face ongoing challenges around climate conditions, livestock supply fluctuations, international markets and currencies, competition, geo-political factors and increasing operating costs.” In addition, the notable increase in the average weight of a sheep carcass meant that Fletcher had to evolve to accommodate changing
processing demands. Explains Gabrielle: “The more kilograms per animal, the more meat needs to be processed, packaged and refrigerated which in turn requires investment in additional capacity. Adding to this is the rise in ‘quick serve’ restaurants and changes to portion sizes.” To accommodate this, the company expanded and upgraded its facilities in terms of processing machinery, chilling, and refrigeration plants - all while keeping overheads front of mind.
Energy-efficient upgrades
Naturally, energy saving is a key driver for a progressive company like Fletcher and therefore working smart, mindfully and ethically remains top priority. “Our Dubbo plant is 32 years old, and we have spent the past few years identifying and analysing where we can improve on energy savings and enhance processes,” explains Gabrielle. “We had to renew our strategy and vision and invest to make a real change. Once we started seeing results, we wanted to find more ways to reduce our energy consumption.” Fletcher turned to SMC Corporation Australia New Zealand (ANZ) to help them along their energy saving journey. SMC has spent years cultivating a customer-centric business where solutions are developed around customer needs –
rather than the other way round. Bill Blyth, SMC Energy Conservation Group Manager, heads up the energy-saving task team and explains that they work closely with customers to find sustainable solutions based on exact requirements. “More than ever, solutions need to be efficient. Efficiency keeps us competitive.” Most of the work was focused around analysing and updating existing factories and processes. In relation to the partnership, Bill says SMC has been collaborating closely with Fletcher’s for some time to help bring their energy saving vision to life. “From our early discussions, it was clear that Fletcher’s wanted to lead the way in terms of efficiency. We knew that we were in it for the long-haul and that our vision wouldn’t be achieved overnight.” He adds that every change requires resources and funding. “SMC worked closely with the team on site to understand the most cost-effective approach and to establish a plan that would see improvements introduced in an efficient and costeffective way. In addition, SMC worked closely to support Fletcher’s with accessing Government funding for energy reduction projects.”
Realising savings
Mick Toovey, Maintenance Manager at Fletcher, worked closely with SMC throughout the two-year process. “Compressed air is costly,” he says. “SMC conducted a full audit on our air systems which gave us further insights into possible savings. In fact, our air compressor is now down from a 165kW compressor to a 110kW compressor following the improvements we have made.” Mick says the savings have been substantial. “We have saved around $65 000 per annum on our energy bill!” Best of all, Fletcher has continued to increase their production without compromising on their bottom line. Bill says: “While the ultimate value lies in the bottom line, it really is about working smarter to support the maintenance and operation teams. Fletcher is committed to providing a cleaner and greener footprint both locally and globally, and to sustain this. This makes it an ongoing project of continuous improvement.” “SMC energy saving components are embedded into the site processes at all levels, supported by a site maintenance team that is committed to retaining the efficiencies. We

have also installed Air Management Systems (AMS) across the site to ensure energy efficient compressed air consumption as the plant grows.” Components installed include: EX600 Ethernet manifolds and sensor interfaces, many standard ISO air cylinders and fit for purpose; MGPM, CG1, CG5 and CS1 air cylinders, including specially (Australian) designed guided rodless cylinders, air preparation, flow and pressure monitoring, vacuum components, rod lock cylinders for precision positioning, analogue cylinder position sensing, SY valve manifolds and proportional control valves and smart valve positioners. These are standard SMC products but when used in the right combination and when correctly selected and configured to each application, they become powerful energy saving tools within the business. On project highlights, Gabrielle says: “A highlight was the installation of metering across the site. This was a huge job, but it now allows us to understand our plant’s inner-most workings in real-time. To give you an example, we installed over 30 water meters across site during the peak of the drought when our town’s water supply was sitting well below 1%. The metering enabled us to slash water use by 30% because we understood how and where it was being used. We now look at energy saving holistically and consider all aspects of the plant for potential savings.” Gabrielle was pleasantly surprised about the scale of energy efficiency during this project. “I don't think we understood just how much we could improve coming into this. From fixing leaks, to installing air booster systems and introducing zoned pressure and flow control systems, our compressor load has been dramatically reduced. As the utility price continues to rise, and our production output follows suit, we have a responsibility to continue improving our energy footprint.” The new approach has put Fletcher in a strong position to cope with rising costs and increasing global competition. The company exports over 95% of its produce to more than 90 countries and sees more developments on this front in future. SMC Corporation Pty Ltd 9354 8222 smcworld.com

Guiding the Way Bonfiglioli explains the growing demand for Automatic Guided Vehicles in the Logistics realm Automatic Guided Vehicles (AGVs) refer to a range of driverless transportation robots – for example, computer-controlled materials handling vehicles. These vehicles are programmed to transport materials through designated pickup and delivery routines within a facility. The AGV sector is constantly expanding, and these machines are commonly used in fields such as logistics and intralogistics. Martin Broglia, Managing Director for Bonfiglioli Australia New Zealand, explains: “AGVs answer to the call by modern manufacturers. Rather than using team members to transport goods and materials, AGVs are now entrusted as a fluid, efficient, safe, and precise way to do so.” The vehicles are programmed to transport materials through designated pickup and delivery routes within a facility.
Too soon for AGVs?
While the term ‘driverless’ may seem ahead of our time, Martin says that this is simply not the case. “This technology is advanced however it is easily accessible, scalable and modular – making it suitable to a range of applications, companies and sectors” he adds. Logistics (and centralising logistics) is integral to the success of almost every business. Explains Martin: “Moving products along the supply chain is the most important aspect of any product-
driven business. By doing so efficiently, businesses improve their profitability, customer satisfaction and productivity.” COVID-19 continues to accelerate the need for reshoring and shorter supply chains, putting strain on a business’s bottom line. “Bringing manufacturing home (and improving logistics) requires careful planning. One would need to hire more resources, invest in more technology, and dedicate a significant amount of time to the process. Based on this, we anticipate an uptick in the demand for AGV’s; staff can focus on adding value to the business, whilst AGVs seamlessly handle the transporting of goods.”
AGV advantages include: • • • • • •
Shorter and faster product cycles. Increased manufacturing flexibility. Increased ergonomic and safety. Reduced labour costs. Increased accuracy and productivity. Easily expandable layout and system capacity. • They enhance workplace safety by eliminating related accidents caused by human error. • They perform tasks in dangerous environments such as handling hazardous substances, working in extreme temperatures, and moving heavy materials. As companies continue to invest in automation, and in many cases AGVs, Bonfiglioli delivers innovative solutions to match. “Over the past few years, Bonfiglioli has developed many AGVs solutions on the international market.”
These solutions are developed with the highest levels of customisation, which requires - right from the initial design phases - in-depth interaction between the customer and Bonfiglioli’s team to ensure that all the required specifications and variants are known. “Internationally, our company is integrating various technologies and product classes like motion control, HMI, new generation inverters, synchronous reluctance motors, permanent magnets motors and precision planetary gearboxes. This represents only a part of our complex reality” comments Martin. Bonfiglioli’s AGV System is a highly flexible and modular platform for a wide spectrum of applications including warehouse and logistics, parcelling, material handling, automotive, chemical and plastic, food and beverage as well as pharmaceutical. “Currently these solutions are imported from head office in Italy and comes with the backing of a technical team. CASE STUDY - QAD
De Bortoli wines The De Bortoli Wines journey started over 90 years ago when Vittorio De Bortoli emigrated from Northern Italy with dreams of building a better life. Vittoria purchased a fruit farm near Griffith, Australia, in the New South Wales Riverina region and turned unwanted Shiraz grapes into wine for family and friends – those were the beginnings of one of Australia’s largest family-owned wineries. Following these humble beginnings, De Bortoli Wines has grown to become the sixth largest winery in the country, exporting to 75 countries around the world with bottling plant operations in Europe and distribution in the UK. Operating estates across five Australian winemaking regions, De Bortoli Wines has also demonstrated a strong commitment to sustainability and views this as a key philosophy of leaving a positive legacy for future generations. De Bortoli Wines operates a complex vertically and horizontally integrated business model that encompasses wine production and distribution from grape to glass.
The challenge: a complex supply chain means flexible systems are required to maintain grape to glass traceability
“De Bortoli is a vertically integrated business that is involved in every part of the wine industry and can be thought of as not just one company, but as a collection

" The real value of an integrated solution across multiple business units is visibility - across grapes, wine-making, bottling, logistics, and all the way to the consumer" Bill Robertson, CIO, De Bortoli Wines retail presence,” said Bill Robertson, CIO, De Bortoli Wines. “One of the things that De Bortoli has managed to do over the years by working with QAD has been building agribusiness just-in-time scheduling and incorporating that into our winemaking process. The focus of this was around quality, compliance and optimization. These pieces interconnect. So, when we do just-in-time scheduling of grapes, it not only optimizes our deliveries for our growers and for ourselves, it also improves the quality. When we do things like the online spray diaries, that not only helps with our compliance, but it also helps with the efficiency. When we have traceability through our blends, that also helps with our
The solution: collaboration with qad for a just-in-time scheduling solution to improve quality, compliance and traceability
As De Bortoli looks to the future, the company plans to integrate QAD’s next generation Adaptive UX. “QAD’s Adaptive UX is going to support De Bortoli’s vision of sustainability by bringing all the disparate pieces of information and software into one cohesive ERP that we’ll be able to leverage for a long time,” said Shane Dunn, business analyst, De Bortoli Wines. “We’re also really excited about where QAD is going with its new user
experience. The application programming interfaces (APIs) will allow us to integrate with things like manufacturing execution systems, our constraint-based scheduling systems and our supply chain integration,” comments Robertson. “The ability to deploy on multiple devices is going to be critical. There are so many pieces to where QAD is going, not just in the immediate future but the long-term, that aligns with what we want to achieve.” Dunn adds, “We’re using QAD to track all wine specifications from grape to bottle. The current feature set is highly configurable, and we’re using this to print a certificate of analysis form for the customer, which shows all the specifications that they have asked for and how they match.” “We’re really excited by where QAD is going with its Adaptive UX. Laser-cutting quotation time slashed in half with new software New cloud-based laser cutting quotation software from ipLaser typically more than halves the time and manual input required by laser cutting companies to prepare precise estimates for world industries using their services. The ipLaser cloud-based technology suite – which can automatically process three-dimensional engineering and production graphics provided by customers – not only automates business processes and saves time, but also transforms and expands business opportunities for the huge and rapidly growing number of laser service providers. “It does this by enabling laser cutting businesses to respond to customers’ needs more quickly and to reach many more prospective customers than previously in a given time,” says ipLaser Managing Director Ivan Cooper. “So the new process – which we believe is unique in the global market – goes far beyond saving time and costs, to fundamentally change and improve the way a business built around laser cutting can grow.” “This technology is a game changer across multiple industries, because laser cutting is one of the world’s fastest growing industries, with the machine market alone expected to exceed $US7 billion (almost $9 billion AUD) by 2024, as major industries adopt this fast and accurate technology that flexibly responds to the digital revolution of industry 4.0.” ipLaser’s new technology differs from conventional 2D-based laser quotation technologies in that it can be fed full 3D schematics of a product and sift out precisely all the 2D sheet metal surfaces required to be cut by a laser workshop of any size and complexity. The new automated 3D process eliminates many previous obstacles to the use of 3D encountered by laser cutting companies, whose services are delivered in a 2D sheet metal environment, using surfaces that must be extracted from 3D drawings. Mr Cooper says previous challenges in the conversion included high cost and time demands: “3D packages are expensive, trained operators are expensive and finding the time to train people (if they have no prior experience) is hard too.” Simplifying the process makes it more accessible for any operator without 3D experience, in both large and small 32

ipLaser’s new 3D quotation software takes a customer’s 3D model and automatically identifies all component parts. It separates them out and generates a quote based on materials, labour and any customised pricing.
laser shops. This means businesses can scale up to handling 3D models as a customer quoting source quickly, driving opportunity and growth ahead of their competitors, says Mr Cooper. The new 3D software complements and extends the worldwide success of the ipLaser time saving and revenue growing software developed from practical laser shop production floor and quotation management experience over more than 30 years. The new technology taps into the experience and needs of thousands of ipLaser software users globally, who have contributed their ideas, catering to the needs of laser cutters servicing the world’s major industries, including automotive, aviation, architectural and construction products, engineering electrical, manufacturing, metals, mining and energy, shipbuilding and textiles. ipLaser’s latest software ties in seamlessly with a job shop customer’s existing 3D drawings and automatically breaks down their complexity into the myriad of simple 2D shapes that require laser cutting. “No job shop customer wants to be asked to provide differently formatted drawings. In most cases, they’ll just seek to work with someone who can more easily meet their needs. With the latest ipLaser software, job shops can automatically extract their customer’s parts from a 3D model, effectively breaking down roadblocks to getting the job done most efficiently,” says Mr Cooper.
“With ipLaser’s product suite, any operator can produce quotes from a 3D drawing, with no 3D experience required, allowing them to meet customer requests efficiently without investing heavily in 3D technology,” he says. The new technology also enhances accuracy and customer service by automatically using rules involved in the job for consistency. Customers get faster, more accurate and more complete quotes from anyone in the business. Ivan Cooper and his business partner Peter Olle have been involved in profile cutting job shops for more than 30 years. They base their new suite of ipLaser technologies (different parts of which are suitable for different laser shop tasks) on research and practical experience in developing a business management solution to ensure effective control, efficiency and accuracy of the quoting, order processing and reporting aspects of their own laser cutting business and those of their worldwide user base. The result is the ipLaser cloud-based platform, which is designed to meet the requirements of busy, modern laser job shops, by enabling accurate, consistent and timely quotations for complex parts requiring multiple processes. ipLaser seeks to address the following opportunities: • Quote turnaround times, enabling customers to receive instant quotes with the ipLaser online quoting portal. It also enables staff to prepare quotations more efficiently for
customers from simple to complex parts with quote turnaround times from minutes to hours – not a day or days • Pricing consistency. The Administrator-controlled rules of ipLaser ensure consistent quantitybased pricing to the customer, regardless of which customer service staff member prepared the quote or the location in which the quote was prepared • Process improvement. ipLaser promotes business growth by timely delivery of quotes to customers, either via the online store or direct with service staff. The simplicity of the ipLaser system enables a broader selection of company staff to assist with quotes and therefore releases more multi-skilled staff to address wider business opportunities, says Mr Cooper. ipLaser is trusted by job shops in North and South America, the United Kingdom and throughout Europe, and within Australia and New Zealand. It is expanding into the growing industries of the Asia-Pacific, which are vigorously embracing the laser cutting industry’s role in Industry 4.0. How this intuitive piece is revolutionising multi-directional conveyor sortation Australian designed and manufactured omni-wheels are an imperative component of a new, multi-directional, conveyor sortation (MDS) table being made by the NSW company, OMNIA. In testament to their remarkable performance, the tables are now becoming highly sought after both here and overseas and are soon to be used at a major European postal service. Managing director of OMNIA Peter McKinnon describes their omni-wheels as ‘wheels within wheels’. “The omni-wheels allow the MDS to sort and divert packages in conveyor systems without the need for pop-ups or rotating re-directional mechanisms,” Mr McKinnon says. “Our transposed axle system is unique worldwide and allows goods to move in any direction. “By using two different sized omni wheels, at 90 degrees to one another, there are fewer moving parts and greater reliability and performance, than with comparable roller belt and pneumatic systems,” he explains. “Fewer moving parts and less friction in the mechanics means less wear-andtear, noise, maintenance and energy usage. “With our systems you can divert, position, align, rotate, orient and merge a wide range of packages totes and payloads. There’s no need to lift, push or guide packages. “The modular tables work individually or as a group to manipulate more complex package sorting and movement. They can be programmed for secondary processing such as labelling, specific inspection and accept or reject processes.” The highly productive system can sort
up to 4,880 items, weighing up to 30kg per hour, assuming a 50% diversion rate.
by reprogramming rather than having to install new hardware.
However, Mr McKinnon said it is not just the systems speed and performance that is attracting customers.
The patented omni-wheels are made entirely of polymers. As they are entirely injection moulded, using several over moulding techniques and they do not require metal pins, screws or inserts to hold them together. Removing the need for inserts and fasteners delivers an extremely robust and reliable wheel.
“Customers like the systems simplicity, scalability, reliability, and ability to be relocated. Compact and lightweight, our MDS modules are easy to install in existing infrastructure and added to adapt for load, speed and size. Being able to quickly drop in a replacement module has benefits for maintenance while continuing operations.” OMNIA’s conveyor sortation tables are available for both automated and manual conveyors in a range of sizes. Automated modules can be repurposed
“Our wheels are durable, impact resistant, don’t corrode, and perform at optimum levels in a variety of temperatures - which reduces down time due to lost or broken rollers. “OMINIA’s MDS tables are an ideal choice for industrial applications in dusty, dirty or corrosive environments.” Mr McKinnon said the growth in
e-commerce logistics and automation means the need for MDS tables is on the rise. OMNIA is continuing to invest in refinements to enhance its range and plan to meet these demands. In further news, the company is now finalising designs for its MDS tables to be able to handle a 100x100mm minimum parcel size. A recent $563,000 grant from the Australian Government’s Manufacturing Modernisation Fund (MMF) is also contributing to its $2.25M project to automate manufacturing of its 50mm wheel to increase production at a lower per unit cost.

MACHINERY Commissioning of Eilbeck’s new vertical lathe a smooth process with Applied’s expertise & support If one was to nominate an Australian company that epitomises success in manufacturing, Eilbeck would have to be a lead contender. With close to almost 115 years of experience in the manufacturing sector the family-owned company is today managed by Owner/Director Tom Eilbeck. Today the company’s staff numbers have increased to around 300. It is now into its 4th generation and has grown through sheer hard work, capitalising on market opportunities and an overarching commitment to producing the highest quality equipment. This high level of quality has been reflected with repeat orders from many clients – both from the public and private sector. Initially starting as a foundry on the Swan River in West Australia the company evolved into a machine shop and eventually into designing and building overhead cranes. Today Eilbeck Cranes has around 65% of the local overhead crane market, supplying to a diverse range of industries including civil and industrial developers. In the bespoke crane market, their share increases to around 75%. The company has now come full circle, building a state-of-the-art CNC machining workshop in 2015 to complement its existing engineering, fabrication and welding skills gained from manufacturing components for the standard crane range. This bespoke new machining shop operates as a separate division under the banner of Eilbeck Heavy Machining and is managed by Tom Eilbeck’s son Charlie. Up until 2015 all the components for their bespoke cranes had been contracted out to local machine shops; the new machine shop would allow Eilbeck to bring this work back inhouse and importantly provide the opportunity to tender for large-scale machining work. “One of the key attractions for customers is that we can offer a full turn-key solution given our capabilities extend to design and engineering, fabrication, painting, welding and the mechanical side of any job. This capacity makes us an attractive proposition to the contract engineering and manufacturing sector,” Charlie Eilbeck said. “We have purposely targeted large-scale work where there is less competition in the market; essentially big projects that were previously tendered out to overseas suppliers. We can handle work up to 200 tonnes and have some of the largest, most advanced CNC machines in Australia and we only ever purchase the very best brands,” Mr Eilbeck went on to say. The mining industry, shiploader and rail mounted machines, rail equipment and other major projects are just some of the sectors that Eilbeck’s machining expertise is utilised. Such has been the success of the
36

CNC machine shop that the company has recently completed a second CNC heavy machining facility. This 6,000 sq metre block incorporates a 3,000 sq factory which houses some of the newest, largest and most precise CNC machine tools in Australia. This is complemented by dual 160 tonne overhead travelling cranes. Along with the existing facility, this has made Eilbeck one of the largest machining shops in Australia. “We saw a big opportunity in the large vertical turning market and that’s where our hunt for a heavy-duty CNC vertical lathe started. Like many of our machine purchases we didn’t have worked lined up – we bought it anticipating we would secure work; that’s the way we do things, and it always works out well for us,” Mr Eilbeck said. “Applied Machinery had tendered for some other machines, and we found they always presented well so we gave them the opportunity to quote on this large new lathe with the Hwacheon brand they represented. “We already have a couple of conventional manual Hwacheon machines, so we knew the brand. They’re quite renowned for their vertical lathes and have a good reputation in the market
which is why we ultimately ended up opting for the Hwacheon brand,” Mr Eilbeck went on to say. The model selected was the heavy-duty VT-2000 model - a ram type vertical lathe with an 80″ chuck which provides optimum machining conditions and performance for large size heavy duty workpieces. “I take my hat off to Applied Machinery – they did a really good job throughout, from managing the whole purchase process from machine selection, agreement on specifications through to training and commissioning. Their staff were always available to answer any question or fix any issue. “Hwacheon were also very impressive. They sent a team of engineers and technicians overseas from Korea to do the entire installation and commissioning over a period of weeks. This was made even more challenging given the Covid 19 situation and the need for 14 days quarantine,” Mr Eilbeck said. “As an OEM they excel in their support. I was very impressed with the fact that after the commissioning they kept one of the key engineers with us for three weeks to iron out any teething issues whilst we trialled different
jobs through the machine. It’s actually been one of the smoothest commissioning of any machines we’ve had,” Mr Elibeck added. The Hwacheon is being used to machine a variety of different parts including rope drums, mining equipment and brake discs for global OEMs. “We’re very happy with the performance of the machine so far; it’s actually been one of the smoothest commissioning of any machine we’ve had. Given the quality of their advice and excellent service, I’ll certainly look at using Applied Machinery again for any future machine purchases,” Mr Elibeck concluded. One of the outcomes of the Covid pandemic is the recognition of the importance of nurturing and assisting local manufacturing. This is reflected in the huge support that the Government is providing Australian manufacturers to encourage greater investment and the push to ensure major projects remain in the country – something that is benefitting Eilbeck. A new block of land has been purchased in Wollongong which will house a factory that will be dedicated to heavy fabrication, painting and assembly. This will complement the existing eight factories around Australia. With the extensive support the government is providing to Australian manufacturers, ongoing investment in new factories and machines and a can-do attitude to taking on all kinds of large projects, the future for Eilbeck Heavy Machining looks bright. Tool presetters key to quality and productivity Through their ability to precisely measure any tool off-line, with micron accuracy, tool presetters boost productivity and improve quality. Machine uptime is optimised and tool life is maximised, as a CNC machine is able to keep cutting. Tool presetters provide three key features in the one machine: measuring, presetting, and inspecting tools. They save set-up time, improve accuracy and produce better quality parts while minimising scrap. A state-of-the-art image processing system measures the cutting edges of tools in seconds, then saves and documents the measurement results so time-wasting fine adjustments are a thing of the past. Adjustable boring bars can be easily set with micron precision in less than a minute, which in turn eradicates frustrating “trial and error” cutting. Tool run-out can also be checked and cutting inserts inspected using the on-board inspection camera. “Presetting and measuring allows for shorter fitting times and greater productivity. While your machine works you can get the next tool ready. Thanks to correctly preset tools, the very first part will be of the highest quality. You can also be confident the tool will perform perfectly until the end of the tool life,
thereby minimising the chance of rejects,” said Dimac Managing Director Paul Fowler. Dimac is the sole distributor for Zoller; acknowledged as the premium manufacturer of tool presetters. Zoller is a German brand founded by Alfred Zoller; the company is still run by the Zoller family – now in its third generation. Since 1968, more than 28,000 presetting and measuring machines as well as tool measuring machines with worldwide unrivalled software solutions have been sold. Zoller also markets a range of EZset tool presetters. Dimac has had a long, successful association with the company, which started when Mr Fowler met Christoph Zoller at Austech in 2007. Following a number of discussions, Mr Zoller was confident of Dimac’s ability to successfully market their brand in Australia and New Zealand and Dimac was duly appointed sole distributor for the EZset range. EZset are assembled with high quality brand name components, such as Bosch pneumatic components, THK guides and Heidenhain Glass Scales to ensure a long, maintenance-free lifetime. Equipped with image processing based on the newest technology available, a precise tool mounting spindle and numerous measurement functions, EZset sets the benchmark in cost effective tool presetting outside of a CNC machine tool. “Right from the start, the working dedication, eagerness to learn the product and focus on our brand gave me a very good impression of Mr Fowler and his business. Over the years we have met numerous times at trade shows where our relationship has strengthened. Having successfully marketed our EZset brand it made perfect sense to award distribution of our premium Zoller band to Dimac for both AUS and NZ markets,” Mr Zoller said. Regardless of the model chosen, all Zoller presetters feature the highest quality components that include a high-precision freely accessible tool holder spindle, state-of-the-art optics, leading image processing technology and comfortable and easy to use ergonomic control units. “We’ve been distributing German manufactured tool presetters for a number of years and these have enabled many CNC operators to improve their productivity and quality. Offering the choice of both the EZset and Zoller range ensures we can cater to all
38

market segments; no matter what your requirements or budget, we are confident we will now have a presetter to suit your needs perfectly,” Mr Fowler went on to say. In addition to offering an extensive range of models, both EZset and Zoller offer extensive hardware and software options to suit individual operators’ production needs. Both brands have a range of optional features that includes a direct link via ethernet to various CNC machines. This facilitates the direct transfer of a measured tool’s library of results, thus eliminating the potential of damaging data entry errors. “Precisely measured cutting tools deliver at least a 15% increase in productivity in your manufacturing processes. The initial investment in a tool presetting device is quickly returned through the increased productivity, higher quality and less waste. They are easy to operate and will save a company time and money,” Mr Fowler concluded. Dimac Tooling (03) 9771 6121 www.dimac.com.au

users of Inconel and Titanium, with cost effective solutions and reliability from a system with real technological advantages in part production.
Laser melting leader, SLM Solutions GmbH, have just launched ground-breaking new software. A crucial development in 3D metal printing, it allows products to be built with reduced support structures.
“This new technology is another milestone, not only for us but for the entire industry. As a high-tech company, we are once again shaping the face of additive manufacturing with this product launch,” said Sam O’Leary, CEO of SLM Solutions announcing the launch.
Since the 1990’s a 3D metal part being built required support structures in a design as they provided support for overhanging sections as well as playing a vital role in the cooling process absorbing and distributing heat away from the component. SLM’s advanced technology in 3D metal processing has now reduced support structures by setting ‘parameters’ at the design stage. The advantages are a reduction in metal powder, significant time saving on the

Effective Repair Using Laserline Cladding Repairing worn or damaged parts instead of replacing them is common practice. Parts don’t last forever but it is possible with laser technology to repair a part exposed to corrosion, wear or damage and even give it a longer life. A reliable repair process is called ‘cladding.’ Cladding a damaged or worn part occurs where the laser beam directs metal powder to the identified site under highly controlled conditions. The process can reinforce damaged sections of very large parts and even to small parts that may otherwise have been difficult to repair. Lasers are used for a range of purposes across different industry sectors. Leading this usage is Laserline GmbH, a German company with over 20 years of development expertise in designing high power diode lasers for applications in welding, heat treatment and cladding. Distributed here by Raymax Applications Pty Ltd in Sydney, Laserline has over 5,000 installations across the world for general welding, heat treatment, brazing and cladding. They are found in sectors such as the car industry in Korea where lasers are used in the manufacture of Audi Q3 vehicles, to the North Sea for removing biofouling on ships, and for the repair of defence aircraft in Melbourne. Engineering workshops across Australia use Laserline high power diode lasers especially for cladding repairs of large parts from oil rigs, vehicles and even turbine blades, to name a few areas where repair is cheaper than replacement. Laser cladding occurs by using the laser to generates a heat source. This melts the surface of the workpiece in a very localised spot forming a molten pool, by applying short but intensive energy inputs that do not cause deformation yet are sufficient for melting. Management of the process during operation is possible as the energy input can be fine-tuned controlling the surface heat. A coating material, either as powder or wire, is added to the molten pool. This coating material is melted, fusing it with the original. Once cooled, a solid fusion compound of the two metals, or metallurgical alloy, remains securely bonded to the structure. Diode lasers offer the best results in the cladding process due to the ‘top-hat profile’ that generates a uniform energy input ensuring uniform surface treatment. The fusion between the base stratum and coating material provides a significant advantage as the metallurgical joins are very robust and add life to the repaired part.
AUGUST / SEPTEMBER 2021
The extent of laser cladding examples can be found in agriculture, cylinder repair in the mining industry, and even coating on heat exchangers. Agricultural field vehicles where traditional carbide layers that protect saw blades, disc harrows or counter blades from wear and corrosion can become damaged. Diode lasers can vary the coating thickness while reducing distortion of the part by forming a ‘quiet’ molten pool using minimal heat, still resulting in effective repair even extending the part working
life. A growing market is seen in laser coating of hydraulic cylinders used in technical mining facilities such as coal extraction. The original coating on a cylinder corrodes very quickly exposed to the localised atmosphere and can lead to leaking. Until now chrome plating was the primary method used but this process is being replaced due to the durability of laser coating. Protection against highly corrosive gases or liquids that come into contact with metal heat exchangers during usage can affect the part life. It is
possible to apply a thin repair coating to extend the product life. This same treatment can be used in incinerator plants where the metal structures has been attacked by chlorine. Cladding treatment of these items is a far more economical way to go.

As a result, people are starting to think more in terms of value than simply product price.” According to Roy Morgan Research, almost all Australians (99%) are aware of
the Australian Made logo and 92% trust the trademark certification as an identifier of genuinely Australian Made products. 97% of Australians associate the logo with the support of local jobs and employment opportunities, 95% with safe and highquality products, 89% with the use of ethical labour and 78% with sustainability. Mr Lazzaro said, “The best way to
support our local makers and growers around the country, is to identify Aussie products by looking for the green and gold kangaroo logo – the brand the nation trusts.” Australian Made www.australianmade.com.au

AUSTRALIAN MADE
City of Joondalup reinforces its support for local manufacturers The City of Joondalup has reinforced its commitment to local manufacturers, officially joining the Australian Made Campaign as a Campaign Supporter – the first local government in Western Australia to do so. Australian Made Campaign Chief Executive, Ben Lazzaro, said through the partnership, the City of Joondalup has pledged to support the activities of Australian manufacturers and growers in its municipality. “Australian Made is thrilled to partner with The City of Joondalup,” said Mr Lazzaro. “The City has chosen to leverage the power of the Australian Made logo to actively demonstrate its support for local industry.” Located 25 kilometres north of the Perth CBD, the City of Joondalup is one of Australia’s fastest growing regions. It is home to 53,000 jobs in diverse industries including strategic growth sectors of
digital media, cybersecurity, engineering, and medical technologies. “The pandemic has brought the many benefits of buying Australian Made into sharp focus, and this renewed focus has consumers and businesses exercising their preference for Aussie products more than ever. This pro-Australian sentiment also presents an opportunity for Aussie manufacturers to expand their markets both at home and abroad. As Australia’s only registered country of origin certification trademark, the logo is the true mark of Aussie authenticity and is central to the domestic and export strategies of many Joondalup businesses,” said Mr Lazzaro. At the recent Future Proofing Joondalup Business Forum, Joondalup Mayor Albert Jacob recognised the power of the Australian Made logo and noted the partnership would help showcase Joondalup’s manufacturing
capabilities, both in Australia and around the world. “I am proud to announce that our city is the first local government in WA to become a Campaign Supporter of the Australian Made Campaign,” said Mayor Jacob. “Due to the impact of COVID-19, there has been a significant upswing in demand for Australian made products. We know that while some of Joondalup’s businesses are leveraging this opportunity for domestic sales and exports, it’s an opportunity for more local businesses to get on board the iconic gold and green kangaroo triangle, Australia’s most recognised and trusted country of origin brand.”
Recent Roy Morgan research revealed trust in the iconic Australian Made kangaroo logo is at an all-time high, with 92% of Australians confident products displaying the logo are made in Australia. Almost all Australians (99%) recognise the green and gold Australian Made logo, with 97% associating it with the support of local jobs and employment opportunities, 95% with safe and highquality products, 89% with the use of ethical labour and 78% with sustainability. To learn more about the City of Joondalup and its Business Programs, please visit www. joondalup.wa.gov.au
GOOD FOR THE ECONOMY, EVEN BETTER FOR YOUR BUSINESS. Purchasing locally made equipment provides numerous benefits for your business and this logo guarantees you the very best advice, equipment, service and support. Whilst lower cost materials handling and vibratory equipment from overseas may initially seem an attractive proposition, it is ultimately false economy.
The ability to work closely with us during every phase of the project coupled with quick turnaround, quality and reliability are just some of the benefits. Plus the opportunity to easily add to or modify years later as production needs change, far outweighs any price difference. In terms of return on investment, there is simply no comparison.

Australian Made helps Aussies under lockdown At a time when millions of people across the country are doing it tough under varying degrees of lockdown, the Australian Made Campaign is shouting out to Aussies to remember that they can make a real difference to the lives of other Australians by thinking about the people behind their purchases and looking for the green-and-gold kangaroo, which will
help to support Aussie manufacturers and growers. Ben Lazzaro, Chief Executive of Australian Made, said the different lockdown levels across the states continues to pose significant challenges to local growers and makers. “With continued COVID-related
disruptions, many local businesses are hurting. By calling on Australians to buy Australian, consumers can be sure that their products will not only be made to some of the highest quality and safety standards in the world, they will also help to deliver certainty for local growers and manufacturers, creating local jobs and economic activity while strengthening
our local manufacturing capabilities. Our support is key to ensure these businesses not only survive but thrive into the future,” said Mr Lazzaro. About 13 million Australian have been subjected to some form of lockdown in the last month or so, forcing people across Victoria, South Australia and New South Wales to stay in their homes. “Australians are aware of the value that buying Australian brings to the economy. Choosing locally manufactured goods and locally grown products helps to support our local communities and support Aussie jobs. As a result, people are starting to think more in terms of value than simply product price.” Almost all Australians – 99% of us – recognise the Australian Made logo, according to Roy Morgan Research. The pollster also found out that 92% of Australians trust the trademark certification as an identifier of authentic Australianmade products, 97% of us equate the logo with the support of local jobs, 95% of us associate it with high-quality products that are safe, 89% of us see it as an indicator of ethical work practices, and 78% of us associate it with sustainability. “The best way to support our local makers and growers around the country,” said Mr Lazzaro, “is to identify Aussie products by looking for the green-andgold kangaroo logo – the brand the nation trusts.”

Meat processors use 3D printing to manufacture parts The Australian Meat Processor Corporation (AMPC) is working with Markforged and Konica Minolta to establish a world-first, industryowned additive manufacturing (3D printing) service model. This will help red meat processors across Australia print equipment parts, revolutionising equipment maintenance and ensuring continuous supply of meat products. Additive manufacturing, also known as 3D printing, has been around for about a decade. However, new uses for the technology are constantly being discovered. This led AMPC to investigate its potential in meat processing facilities. In a high-volume environment like a processing plant, parts such as bolts and rollers can wear or break. As in any industry, time is money, and if a part fails the result is lost productivity and expensive down-time until the part is sourced and replaced. With 3D printing, the industry can benefit from part replacement, creation, and refinement.

for parts, reducing the chance of supply being at risk.” Matthew Hunter, Innovation Product Marketing Manager, Konica Minolta, said: “The need for sovereign capability for the Australian supply chain, coupled with Australian government support for local food and beverage manufacturing, has resulted in organisations looking to adopt innovative practices. Konica Minolta Australia is proud to partner with AMPC in getting this world-first capability off the ground.” Richard Elving, Director of Sales Asia-Pacific, Markforged, said: “We are very excited about bringing Markforged’s Digital Forge to AMPC and AMPC’s members to support maintenance, repair and operation needs. Supply chain issues can be costly and time-sensitive, and with these tools in place, AMPC will provide a competitive advantage to its members that enables processing facilities to react quickly to solve problems right on the manufacturing floor.” The collaboration between the Australian Meat Processor Corporation, Konica Minolta and MarkForged involves a three-year, multifaceted program so that these benefits can be realised at meat processing plants across Australia. The program will see two mobile, non-metal industrial 3D printers (Markforged X7 carbon fiber 3D printers) shipped to Australian processing plants. Processing staff will be trained to use them so they can assess whether buying a permanent unit would be a good investment. The units will remain on site for four to eight weeks before rotating to another plant. These units can create pre-metal prototypes for assessment as well as producing non-metal parts. Konica Minolta will provide on-site support to help meat processors understand and leverage the technology.
As part of the program, a metal printing 3D industrial unit (metal X system) will be set-up at Konica Minolta's Sydney location dedicated for red meat processing part manufacturing. Plastic prototypes made at each processing location can be sent to this hub to be made out of stainless steel and other metals in as few as 24 hours. A red meat 3D parts database library will ensure all parts are quality controlled. Matthew Hunter said: “When it comes to meat processing, there are a number of challenges for equipment maintenance. This includes the use of old equipment with limited spare part availability and the need to produce custom parts. 3D printing helps address these challenges. Through the database, AMPC’s member organisations will have access to intellectual property to expediate and streamline their repairs processes.” With the ability to rapid prototype with 3D printing and produce one-off 3D parts, meat processors will also be able to modify equipment and/or equipment components to suit their own specific needs by making changes to tooling, fixtures, brackets, and actuators. Currently many of these modifications, customisations and consolidations simply cannot be done. Chris Taylor said: “The processing sector is part of an ecosystem that performs best when all parts are optimised. Although established and dedicated for Australian red meat processors, AMPC will make the 3D printing hub available for other Australian food, agriculture, and manufacturing sectors to evaluate their needs and opportunities for 3D printing within their supply chains.” Australian Meat Processor Corporation (02) 8908 5500 www.ampc.com.au

Good Vibrations Continued from cover
materials handling vibratory equipment, truck and industrial vibrators and flow aid devices for over four decades now. A prominent provider for the food, pharmaceutical and allied industries, their impressive client list includes Arnott’s, Cadburys, Ingham’s, Pepsico and Nestlé. For the uninitiated, every single packaged dry ingredient on a supermarket shelf – from chickpeas, to spices, rice, pasta, confectionary, or soap powder - will have passed through a vibratory feeder. Whether you need to align, sort, spread, sprinkle, size, separate, meter, deliver, blend, weigh or screen your product, Enmin can bring decades of knowledge and ample expertise to the job. “We are driven as a solution-based business,” Anthony says. “A typical example of when we get involved is, Mars will get a customer complaint that they are getting too many broken M&Ms in their packets. That will go from Marketing to
Engineering where they’ll say: ‘Can you guys come up with a solution for this?’ Next thing we’re getting a phone call from Mars saying can you build us a vibratory piece of equipment that allows the rightsize pieces to get into the packet and the wrong-size pieces to be ejected. Whether they’re oversized or undersized – we want them out. That’s where we step in and start building a machine for them.”
How the story began…
Anthony’s father, a mechanical engineer, started a business over 40 years ago that specialised in equipment for the mining sector. “One of the areas they got involved in was a little bit of vibration,” Anthony shares. “Dad soon realised there weren’t many people in Australia with any expertise in this.” After his company had been running for about 10 years, Anthony’s mother was fed-up. With so few mines in Victoria, her
husband was constantly travelling all over the country visiting work sites, leaving her at home with two children. “My sister and I were young at the time, and she said to him: ‘You better figure this out as this isn’t going to work long term.’” This led to Anthony’s father compiling a list of industries that were based on the eastern seaboard of Australia, those that used vibration and those, ultimately, that appeared to be recession proof. “He came to the conclusion that the food industry was a good avenue to go into, and so he started to target this industry,” Anthony explains. And so Enmin came to be. Originally called Engineering and Mining Supplies, it was shortened to Enmin once its founder changed focus embarking on what was to become, and continues to be, a very exciting journey.
Time to move…
Astoundingly, Enmin’s recent relocation has seen them tripling their available space. Now occupying a 2642 square metre area, Anthony couldn’t be happier with the new digs. “With this premises… when I described two years ago what my ultimate would be, it would be to have a factory split into two, so a factory with manufacturing in it,” he explains. “And then an area for clean assembly and storage of parts. Now to find a factory like that near impossible – but we have found that here.” On a further positive note, the sales, marketing and administration offices are sectioned off individually, making it all the safer for employees eventually returning to work post Covid.
What lies ahead…
The trailblazing firm has continued to evolve, implementing a new strategy in what many businesses deem a precarious landscape. “You need to be innovative with your design process,’ Anthony says, revealing that the company is now working on creating machinery that doesn’t just handle one, but 50 different products.
AUGUST / SEPTEMBER 2021
“You have to make sure the equipment you’re designing is dynamic enough to handle everything. That is what people are coming to know us for now. We have a back catalogue of designs that we can draw upon, add to and bolt together to create new, unique systems. We’re hoping to double our turnover in the next five years.” “Our next phase is to do more combinations of these standard pieces to make up a complete system. So, our next revenue growth is going to based upon standard systems using pre-designed modules that already exist in our portfolio.” The company specialises in two types of vibration, electromagnetic and electromechanical. “If you asked me what the heartbeat of Enmin was, and what makes us really unique, not only in this country, but globally, it is our electromagnetic drives.” “Rather than get these from an overseas supplier and manipulating them into what we want them to be, Dad made the decision that we would develop our own.” “The product… there’s a sound that they make. When I hear the sound it actually makes me a little bit emotional! I’ve heard it for so many years, I walk into a factory and I’m like a bee to a honey pot. I start walking around looking for where they are! It’s a unique sound and a unique product and one that we will always manufacture.” With his passion and commitment to his business so evident, it’s clear that Anthony will never be one to rest on his laurels. Giving us a taste of what customers can expect in the future, he says: “We’ve got some exciting product releases coming out in the next 12 months, based on pre-existing systems, that will showcase all of Enmin’s years of experience.” Enmin 03 9800 6777 www.enmin.com.au=

Cobots drive optimisation on the Ford assembly line Ford Motor Company, founded in 1903, is no slouch when it comes to producing motor vehicles – some 5.5 million per year, in fact. So it came as no surprise when it turned to Universal Robots to help it streamline its operations at its major production site in Craiova, Romania. Constant productivity, improved quality and zero room for error is the name-of-the-game for Ford so it valued Universal Robots and its collaborative robots (cobots), which would help deliver a faster production throughput while relieving employees from repetitive tasks.
Support Australian made innovaaon!
Explains James McKew, Regional Director for Universal Robots Asia Pacific: “Ford was in search of solutions to enhance their manual workforce, generating added value to the manufacturing process. In doing so the company realised the need for new automation solutions that could offer space savings, collaborate with people, be moved around when needed, whilst also providing a high degree of safety and a fast return of investment. “After much research, Ford selected four UR10’s from Universal Robots as it ticked all the boxes,” says McKew.
Call us now to arrange a free site survey!
Three of the cobots are fully integrated into work processes and are working safely alongside employees on the assembly line. “One of the UR10s performs the greasing of the camshaft followers, another fills the engine with oil, and the third checks the engine with a UV light and a camera for leakage after it has been filled with oil.” The camera used in the engine check process is a Cognex camera vision - a UR+ product – designed to communicate with the cobot through Ethernet. “The UR10 cobot operates it with the help of an end effector (gripper) specially created and personalized by the Ford engineers according to the application,” McKew explains.
The fourth UR10 unit is used for tests and training. “Due to the integration of the UR10 into the system that controls the assembly line, the process is simplified.” Speaking to the uptake of the UR10 locally, McKew adds that it’s not surprising that the UR10 remains the most widely deployed cobot in Australia and New Zealand. “Offering a large payload of 10kg and a long reach capability of 1300 mm, the UR10 is a worthy investment thanks to its versatility, long service life and its ability to adapt to various application extensions in future.” Adrian Calangiu, Area Manager at the Ford plant comments that their team from the UK did a global analysis on which type of cobot best suited their needs in the engine and vehicle plants. “When we implemented the cobots, it was not our intention to replace people, we wanted to help the operators that perform repetitive and challenging jobs, having the cobot act as a colleague to the operator instead of as a replacement. The UR cobots have the flexibility to work near the operator, without jeopardizing his safe zone. The collaborative robots also relieve him of monotonous, repetitive tasks giving him the opportunity to contribute in a creative manner.” The UR cobots were easy to implement and operators got to grips with them very quickly – with the help of the Universal Robots (UR) Academy online modules. On the local front, McKew concludes saying that he believes that cobots offer countless opportunities to simplify and automate processes. “Our team is on-hand to help take the load off local automotive manufacturers in their quest to accelerate reshoring.” Universal Robots 1800 595 243 www.universal-robots.com/

The tribologically optimised material requires no lubrication or maintenance and can be used with all commercially available 3D printers with heated printing plates. It is remarkable for its great mechanical flexural strength (80 MPa). In jig construction or assembly aids, users are always looking for sliding, wear-resistant special parts that optimise production operation. The parts are often quick to design, but custom manufacture with injection moulding or mechanical processing involves a great deal of cost and effort and is very expensive for small batches. More and more companies are therefore manufacturing their special parts on 3D printers. "iglidur I190 is remarkable primarily for its great strength, making even delicate
structures in the printed component strong," says Tom Krause, Head of the Additive Manufacturing department at igus GmbH. iglidur I190 is also suited to the design of multi-material sliding components because it combines very well with very rigid materials. The new lubrication-free filament can be machined very easily on all commercially available closed 3D printers with heated printing plates. The printed parts can even be used at temperatures of up to 90°C. The new material proved its durability in a test in igus's 3,800 square metre inhouse laboratory. A 3D printed iglidur I190 plain bearing was tested against bearings made of ABS and polyamide from additive manufacture and against turned and injection-moulded bearings made of POM and nylon. The results showed that the printed igus bearing had up to 50 times the abrasion resistance of the bearings made of standard plastics. iglidur I190 did well
igus has developed a new all-rounder filament for 3D printing: iglidur I190. It allows printing wear-resistant special parts such as plain bearings with great mechanical flexural strength (80 MPa).
in internal competition as well – 80 to 46 MPa of flexural strength over foodcompatible iglidur I150 filament. igus currently has a total of eight filaments for the FDM process and three highperformance polymers for the SLS process. The user can either order the
material and use it with their own 3D printer or use the igus 3D printing service. Treotham Automation 1300 65 75 64 www.treotham.com.au

Winning the last mile in the supply chain race New Swisslog white paper discusses how micro-fulfillment can synergise online and storefront Automation-enabled MicroFulfillment Centres are continuing to grow because they benefit both the retailer/grocer and the consumer Global warehouse and logistics automation leader Swisslog is introducing a new white paper on micro-fulfillment centres (MFCs), which focuses on how to utilise automation to maximise efficiency and profitability. Automated MFCs allow companies with or without a bricks-and-mortar footprint within a particular area to move fulfillment closer to customers in order to reduce transportation costs and enable shorter delivery times, benefitting both the retailer – or fast moving consumer goods (FMCG) producer – and the customer. Companies can build a microfulfillment centre as a standalone facility, or inside or bolted on to an existing location, to expand fulfillment capacity. MFCs can support customer kerbside pick-up, too, or a hybrid of pick-up and delivery. Swisslog’s White Paper, “Winning the last mile in the supply chain race: Using micro-fulfillment to synergise online and storefront,” talks about the rise of MFCs (which are expected to grow sixfold in 2021), how Covid-19 further accelerated MFC growth, as well as challenges to the growth of MFCs.
50
INDUSTRYUPDATE.COM.AU
The white paper then goes on to discuss how to synergise online and storefront using MFCs, the future of MFCs, and the importance of partnering with an experienced automation provider to achieve optimal efficiency and profitability outcomes. “MFCs have experienced huge yearon-year growth in the past three years, and they are expected to grow further in 2021, and in the years ahead,” says Sean Ryan, Head of Sales and Consulting, Swisslog Australia. “The rise of MFCs can be attributed to a range of factors, including the fact that they benefit both the consumer and the retailer or grocer. Consumers are rewarded with increased choice, shorter delivery times and efficient kerbside pick-up options. Grocers and retailers are able to use a more efficient order fulfillment method – one that reduces labour and transport costs, avoids clogging retail stores with pickers, and supports higher-order demand levels,” says Mr Ryan. MFCs are a relatively new retailing strategy, so to maximise return on investment, it is important to partner with an experienced automation provider – ideally one that already has extensive experience with other models such as Dark Stores and Central Fulfillment Centres (CFCs). An automation partner will not only have knowledge from other grocery projects, but they will have existing
software with required functionality, and they will know the intricacies of handling delicate products or the requirements of cold storage, for example. With more than 2,000 warehousing and logistics automation projects completed worldwide, Swisslog not only has fundamental knowledge in food and beverage, e-commerce and retail, but it has the ability to deliver logistics automation for the whole supply chain network within these industries, starting with large CFC and moving through Dark Store, down to MFC. In addition to experience with automation equipment, it is important to choose an automation partner with experience in software, too. The software drives the solution, keeps track
of data, and analyses that data to further improve processes in the future. Swisslog’s modular WMS SynQ software provides warehouse management, material flow, automation and 3D visualization, all from a single point of control. It has been designed for dynamic, data-driven supply chains, such as those found in retail and e-grocery industries.

New-generation UHMWPE linings outperforming metals A new generation of engineering plastic from Cut To Size Plastics is typically eight times lighter than comparable steel liners used to curtail friction, wear and material flow challenges in diverse applications requiring no moisture absorption, outstanding chemical resistance and corrosion prevention.
says Cut To Size Plastics Managing Director Mr Laurie Green.
The low-friction Wefapress Flex Line UHMWPE range from Cut To Size Plastics is part of a broad range of engineering thermoplastics that have become disruptor technologies in production engineering and bulk materials handling systems as processing plants and machinery producers focus on lowwear, low friction products that are more efficient, cleaner and quieter and less wasteful than traditional materials that wear out faster.
The dense, partly crosslinked UHMWPE, with a high 7-9.2 million g/ mol molecular mass, can also be specified with anti-static and flame-retardant properties, enhancing its suitability for use in potentially hazardous environments in the resources, transport and industrial infrastructure sectors.
The clean, easily handled product offers excellent impact resistance and flow characteristics to help prevent blockages and material hang-up. It has been particularly successful internationally in heavy duty mining, rail and transport applications, with rail cars using the liner able to carry up to 10 tons more material,
“Flex Line is an ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) that has been chemically modified to further optimise the material for high wear resistance and outstanding sliding properties,” he says.
These light, tough liners are typically between 10-15mm thick for easy application but can be up to 40mm thick in special cases. Flex Cover panels come in different sheet sizes tailored to particular industries and are typically delivered with one side planed for simplicity of application. Cut To Size Plastics staff have received world-class training in uses of Flex Line and other Flex Cover ranges in applications such as cargo troughs,

truck and railway car liners, charging hoppers, bunkers, containers, bucket wheel excavators, transfer stations, wheel loaders, silos, belt scrapers and trough chain conveyors. Flex Cover ranges are also used internationally in agricultural materials handling and minerals processing technologies and in processing cement, lime, gypsum, ceramics, glass, stones, soil and waste produced for disposal and recycling. Technical staff at Cut To Size Plastics can draw on the company’s engineering plastics experience of more than 40
years to advise which product is best for particular applications or as a replacement for metals that is easier to handle, fit and replace. The speed with which the Flex Cover range can be installed and removed is also a time-saving advantage in installation and maintenance practices, optimising uptime and reducing delays where crews are working within tight time frames.” Cut To Size Plastics Pty Ltd 1800 CUT2SIZE www.cuttosize.com.au

Tackling obsolescence with additive manufacturing 3D-printing of spare parts is revolutionising manufacturing Obsolescence is an unavoidable part of any manufacturing environment. However, it’s concerning that nearly 70% of companies admit they do not know when vital equipment requires replacing, or when they do, they scramble to find replacements. Here, Claudia Jarrett, country manager at automation parts supplier EU Automation, explains why the latest developments in additive manufacturing (AM) could provide a useful answer to the obsolescence problem. Additive manufacturing is a transformative approach to industrial production that enables the creation of components using a variety of 3D-printing techniques. But before delving into issues surrounding obsolescence, let’s first define what we mean by 3D printing. The process starts with a component material, initially in the form of powder, which is melted with a laser, layerupon-layer, to obtain the desired shape. Fundamentally, it’s about adding material instead of removing it like in traditional subtractive manufacturing. The range of materials that can be used is almost endless – from innovative plastics and metal alloys, to concrete, wax, resins and even human tissue. One of the newest advances in additive manufacturing is the possibility, recently explored by Sandvik Coromant, to print with diamond powder, shaping the hardest material on Earth into any desired geometry. And, due to additive manufacturing’s ability to print intricate and hollow shapes with no scrap, only the necessary amount of material is added to the process. This has made it a popular technique in fields that require the production of highly specialist components in a small production run, such as aerospace or the biomedical sector. It has also led to exploring how AM could help manage the obsolescence of manufacturing components.
The problem with obsolescence
manufacturer, making it obsolete. When obsolete components break, it can be hard to find like-for-like replacements. Managing obsolescence is therefore critical since the breakage or malfunction of obsolete components exposes the business to risk of costly downtime, or even to the possibility of having to upgrade an entire system.
Revolutionary
Material engineers are currently researching the potential of additive manufacturing to manage some aspects of obsolescence. The core idea is that if a component is no longer available from the OEM, it could be simply 3D-printed. For example, the US Airforce has launched research into 3D printing replacement parts for old planes using the Figure 4 3D Printing Platform designed by 3D Systems. The US Airforce will examine how Figure 4 3D Printing Platform can reproduce components for aircraft that are no longer in production. This comes as the US Airforce often requires out-of-production parts due to manufacturing obsolescence, poor documentation and costs-to-create. And, as replacement parts can be built much faster and in smaller batches through additive manufacturing, no minimum order quantity will be required. In turn, reducing the time aircraft spend on the ground, and the need for warehousing space.
In cases like this, it is much faster and cheaper to rely on an automation parts supplier that specialises in obsolete components. Although obsolescence is an unavoidable part of any manufacturing environment, suppliers like EU Automation ensure manufacturers do not need to be scrambling around finding replacements.
LOAD LIMITERS
ROPE AND CHAIN CRANES AND HOISTS • Helps reduce the risk of accidents • Protects against overloading of Crane and supporting structures • Quick and easy installation and available for all capacity cranes • Available preset or easily calibrated on site • Helps reduce maintenance costs • Minimizes down time • Automatic reset by reducing the load
First of all, it is unclear to what extent AM could help manage the obsolescence of electronic components. This sector is one of those that most suffers the consequences of the increasingly short lifespan of components, due to the speed at which new products and solutions are launched on the market.
On the other hand, technological components, both hardware and software, tend to have a shorter lifespan. As newer versions of the same components are marketed, the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) might stop producing the version purchased by the
Having onsite additive manufacturing capability may require an initial investment of more than £500k and a dedicated design engineering team. While these investments can make sense in an R&D environment, they might be counterproductive to produce spare parts
EU Automation 02 9160 0108 https://www.euautomation. com/au/
ON OVERHEAD CRANES
As promising as this sounds for the aerospace industry, there are still questions that need to be answered before AM can become a standard way of coping with components obsolescence in other industries.
We could potentially 3D print any mechanical component, but it’s much harder, though theoretically not impossible, to 3D print something like a circuit board or cables and wires. Even when possible, manufacturers should consider the cost and complexity of 3D printing spare components.
3D printed spare parts could be the answer to replacing obsolete parts but won’t completely replace the need for a strong parts supply.
REDUCE MAINTENANCE COSTS

Ratio clamps – an alternative solution for dangerous loads Herbert Haenchen, a major European manufacturer of hydraulic cylinders, offers a safety clamping system called ratio clamp. It provides fail-safe load support that meets European safety standards. The system clamps on loss of hydraulic pressure, making it suitable for instances where the normal method of supporting loads using a hydraulic cylinder with hydraulic lock valves is considered unsafe. This may be due to the possibility of lost load-holding ability, caused by the failure of either hydraulic valves or cylinder seals. The ratio clamp is available in three configurations: 1. Mounted on the front of a Haenchen hydraulic cylinder. 2. Mounted on the front of an existing cylinder that has sufficient rod end extension to accommodate the clamp. 3. Mounted to a separate rod, which is installed next to an existing loadholding cylinder. This alternative allows more than one clamp to be used to support the load and is particularly useful when the vertical
distance available for the clamp is limited. This gets around the problem caused by the length of a cylinder and clamp being greater than the daylight available for its mounting. The patented clamping unit, RatioClamp, protects humans, machines and tools in case of a power failure or system shutdown. It fixes axes during the process or for highly dynamic applications and test processes.
Application areas of the hydraulic clamping device: •
Fixing of all types of round rods in any position
•
Out of a standstill
•
Clamping force without energy supply for unlimited time
•
An additional safety component for gravity loaded axes The application of this device includes:
metals processing, aerospace and mining industries, and more. Quality, European-manufactured products to provide fail-safe load support are supplied by Hylec Controls. Hylec Controls (02) 9645 4777 hyleccontrols.com.au

Collaborative Robots Help Bridge the Skills and Automation Gap The ongoing cap on international arrivals in Australia is creating a shortage of skilled labour that is holding back local manufacturing – a problem that could be solved in many instances by the greater adoption of robots. One of the top challenges faced by manufacturers remains the gap between demand and the availability of workers who have experience as robot operators, engineers, programmers, and maintenance technicians to keep factories running. Research by RMIT and Deloitte Access Economics indicates that “Australia is in the grip of a skills gap which could cost the economy $10 billion in growth over the next four years”. First introduced more than a decade ago, collaborative robots (cobots) were designed to help increase productivity and efficiencies. Rather than replacing human workers, they’re being used as a means to add value and work alongside humans.
valuable makes sense. While some are still of the opinion that automation is costing jobs, automation is in fact creating jobs and enhancing productivity,” he said. “Sought after skills are hard to come by – especially when factoring in emigration and the price tags associated with local labour.” He adds that cobots are one of the easiest forms of automation to deploy. “They help reduce the skills gap because your existing employees can program, operate, and maintain them with no previous experience. The out-of-box experience for an untrained operator to unpack a cobot, mount it, and program the first simple task is typically less than an hour.” Rather than taking jobs away, McKew believes that cobots allow employees
to focus on more meaningful tasks that will deliver greater value to the business and its bottom line. “Cobots are specially designed to tackle dull, repetitive and sometimes dangerous processes,” he explains.
productivity.
Factoring Covid-19 lockdowns and restrictions into the equation, cobots can be used in areas where social distancing and lockdowns continue to hamper
“Free online training from the UR Academy helps current employees become successful cobot programmers and integrators in less than 90 minutes. Eight short interactive modules cover all the basics of robot logic, set-up, programming, interfaces, and safety,” he said.
The skills gap shrinks if you can reduce your need for outside integration resources or trained internal experts. In terms of deploying cobots, McKew believes that almost anyone can do it.
“Once they’ve mastered the basics, your employees are ready to implement advanced cobot applications in the future. Experienced employees can use information on the Universal Robots support website to add sophisticated programming and interfaces to meet specific application needs.”
James McKew, Regional Director for Universal Robots Asia Pacific, says that while in the past collaborative robots and industrial robots have come up against resistance by their human counterparts, today, they’re being widely embraced by the workforce. “Important to remember is that Australia and New Zealand have some of the highest labour rates in the world, so naturally, optimising processes and using skilled labour where they are most

Mixquip bottom entry mixers agitate 220,000 litre milk silos Teralba Industries, an Australian based, family-owned manufacturer, has come to the rescue of a Victoria-based food processor that needed to mix increasing volumes of a non-dairy milk but had limited resources or space to expand.
The Teralba technical team was asked if it was possible to use some old 220,000 litre milk silos and install agitation? “No problem,” was their answer. Teralba, which makes industrial mixers, plate heat exchangers, immersion and shell and tube, and stainless-steel pressure vessels, had expanded its range of Mixquip Series 500 bottom entry agitators and had just the solution. The key criteria to convert these old milk tanks into mixing vessels for non-dairy milk included:

- Ground-level installation and servicing.
- Ability to mix from full 220,000 litres down to 5,000 litres Bottom entry mounting configuration provides a powerful axial flow up through the contents of the tank and, combined with a level sensor and variable speed drive, Mixquip bottom entry mixers have the ability to mix down to less than five percent of the total tank volume. A further advantage is that the compact design and short shaft mean lower capital costs than a traditional topentry agitator. LAPP cables selected for vaccine refrigeration When you’re entrusted with transporting Covid-19 vaccines that must be stored at -70 degrees Celsius, you want to be sure that all your systems are up to the task, including cables and connector systems. That’s why L&R Kältetechnik, which produces refrigerating systems for the exceptionally low temperatures encountered by chemical and pharmaceutical industries, turned to LAPP for its cables. Failures could not only cost valuable product, but even lives, said LAPP Australia General Manager Simon Pullinger. LAPP Australia’s parent company, the global LAPP cables, connector and automation technology leader – with 4,650 employees and markets in more than 100 countries – was called on for a refrigerated container solution that overcomes temperature challenges at both ends of the extreme temperatures scale. L&R Kältetechnik was asked by a German vaccine manufacturer, BioNTech, to assist it with the bulk transportation of millions of doses a time of its vaccine, following approval for its widespread use. The vaccine only tolerates standard refrigerators for a short time before being administered. BioNTech supplies the vaccine in boxes that act like large Thermos flasks, keeping the content cool for several days, says LAPP. But what can logistics companies do if they want to send the vaccine in containers by air or ship, where transportation takes longer? L&R came up with idea of taking a conventional shipping container with a length of 20 or 40 feet and installing a refrigeration chamber, including cooling and even an autonomous emergency power supply with a diesel generator or liquid nitrogen – and ensuring everything has a backup in case of failure. A standard 40-foot-long container can hold a 40 cubic metre refrigeration chamber with a temperature of minus 80° and a preliminary chamber at minus 20°, which acts as a low temperature airlock. The storage area is estimated to have a capacity of up to 3.5 million vaccine doses. For such low temperatures, transport companies normally have to use dozens of laboratory deep-freeze cabinets, which are not only expensive, but require significantly more power and space.
through the evaporator at a temperature of minus 90°C. Fans ensure that the heat is dissipated. To prevent their electric motors from freezing, the bearings are heated. The two compressors have a power of 20 kilowatts each, and currents of 40 amps flow through the ÖLFLEX Classic 110 cabling (one of the LAPP cables L&R Kältetechnik uses exclusively for its innovations, drawing on specialised product from the same ranges available in Australia). Directly on the diesel generator, the temperature can rise to over 100°C – positive that is. In the icy storage compartment, meanwhile, where the temperature can be as cold as minus 100° in some places, ÖLFLEX HEAT cables with a PTFE sheath are installed. With these, L&R Kältetechnik is really playing it safe, as the ÖLFLEX HEAT 260 SC is suitable for the most extreme application requirements. It is robust, chemical resistant and space-saving for use in machine and equipment construction at -190°C to +260°C.
Heating for lights and door frame
In addition to the power cables in the cooling system, the container also contains signal transmission cables, for example from the temperature sensor that controls the frequency converter and thus the compressor. In addition, the operator can connect a data cable into the control cabinet at a customer interface. There are also some cables that are not responsible for cooling, but for heating. When you switch on a light at home, it should not be covered, so that the heat can dissipate. In the vaccine store, the problem is precisely the reverse.
In this case, the LED light strips actually need to be heated because otherwise they could simply fail. And the rubber seal on the door between the lock and the storage chamber would freeze immediately, leaving any person inside trapped and quickly in mortal danger. As a result, there is heating on the door frame and door contacts to monitor when someone
enters the chamber. The person present in the low temperature section of the container has to press a button regularly. If there is no signal, the person may have fallen unconscious and an alarm is triggered. Any fault in the electrics could cost lives, which is why L&R Kältetechnik is playing it safe with cables from LAPP. “In our quotations we not only specify the properties of the cables but also that they are ÖLFLEX cables from LAPP and which type.” That really makes a difference for our customers,” says Christoph Wiemer, Head of Special Systems Sales at L&R Kältetechnik Incidentally, minus 80° Celsius is not the coldest system from L&R Kältetechnik, which produces refrigeration chambers operating down to minus 110°, including some for therapeutic applications.
Hot and cold
The cables used to make this container application possible must withstand harsh condition in the form of extreme temperatures, both cold and hot. For example, the refrigerant flows

ATDC has a folding door for the ages ATDC’s commercial folding doors are frequently specified and installed on heritage buildings in Australia. They are generally regarded as enhancing the aesthetic appeal that preserves the older-style look of these older, historical structures.
Some recent doors supplied by ATDC to the new Edmondson Park shopping centre in southwestern Sydney had a copper wash finish applied to give them an older, antique appearance. This finish is applied through a basic rag roll process which is very effective in achieving this copper wash appearance. The project managers for this job were TD Shopfitting who contracted out the application of the special finish described in this article.

MANUFACTURING EMPLOYMENT
JOBS, JOBS, JOBS! Like most businesses, Industry Update has at times struggled to find the right people - or any people for that matter, via specific employment sites. Many businesses are also inundated with responses from applicants that have no qualifications or are overqualified. Manufacturers generally require staff that have a specific set of skills and qualifications but finding such people can be costly in both time and resources.
What better place to advertise manufacturing positions vacant than in Australia’s leading manufacturing media platforms!
