HOW TO FIND

Your

INSPIRATION

INSPIRATION IS THE STIMULATION TO DO SOMETHING AND CAN DRIVE PEOPLE TO DO INCREDIBLE THINGS. IT DOESN’T MATTER WHO YOU ARE, WHAT YOUR JOB IS OR WHICH HOBBIES YOU ENJOY - INSPIRATION IS AT THE CORE OF PERSONAL AND PROFESSIONAL GROWTH.

J

ohn Paxton, senior designer at Kia, finds his inspiration in looking to the future.

“My inspiration has consistently been fueled by a desire to anticipate what’s next,” says Paxton. “Similar to entertainment such as music and film, there’s a human desire to explore and find newness in sights, sounds and experiences.”

He goes on to explain that it’s part of human nature to always want to expand and grow, to reach farther and explore beyond what has already been accomplished. This desire has driven innovation throughout history. “A desire to continue to develop newness in the projects and designs I’m tasked with tackling is kPHOTOGRAPHYS COURTESY OF WWW.KIA.COM MARCH / APRIL 2020

what drives me,” Paxton says. “I thoroughly enjoy the challenge of seeing the unseen, and finding solutions that consumers can eventually connect with... starting with a blank canvas.” In his design work, he keeps a keen eye on what people want now while anticipating the future. Why? Because the Kia cars he is designing today may not be in the hands of drivers for several years, like the Kia Soul, Forte and Cadenza models. “A challenge I face is anticipating what people are going to look for in a design not only today, but years from now when the production vehicle is actually available to them, it’s like having a crystal ball for designers. The most rewarding aspect is

when you are able to see the predicted work out in a well-received product on the road,” he says. Paxton uses the new Kia Soul as an example. His design work on the Soul focused on a youthful demographic heavily inspired by social media, music and fashion.

influential-magazine.com

Using these ideas as inspiration, he worked with his team to create something that didn’t fit the standard vehicle mold. “This was about loudness, boldness, confidence, in a very youthful voice. Nothing was reserved or timid,” he says. Inspiration can be collaborative or personal, and sometimes both. It can help you reach an individual goal - such as fundraising, home improvement or health and wellness - or it can, like Paxton, drive innovation in your professional life in a way that can significantly impact others. If you want to discover your inspiration, consider these simple activities:

becomes an abstract representation of what drives you and what you want to achieve. Go for a drive: Few things beat the feeling of the open road, so go for a drive to a local park to take a hike or simply meander and see where destiny takes you. As you drive, open your mind to the sounds and sights around you. You might see a particularly inspiring mural in the city or a calm field in rural areas. If feeling stuck, turn on some music and drive on. Explore online: Try visiting websites that provide inspiring content. For example, the Give It Everything Collective from Kia at www.kia.com is a digital space where people can share their stories of what it means to give everything. In reading about other peoples’ goals and driving factors, you may find inspiration for reaching your goals.

Create an inspiration board: Sometimes called a mood board, these are great for kicking off creativity and finding purpose. Get a large piece of paper or use a blank wall and create a collage of things that inspire, centering on your goal. These can be pictures, colors, words - whatever strikes a positive chord. This

Do something new: Sign up for that class. Make a fresh fashion choice. Check out that indie film. Strike up a conversation with a stranger. Doing something new can put you outside your comfort zone, and that builds confidence. In expanding your world you may find the inspiration you’re looking for while discovering more about who you are personally. Inspiration can come in many forms. It fuels innovation and ingenuity, whether it’s something massive on the world stage or a modest personal goal. Take time to discover what drives you. (BPT) l MARCH / APRIL 2020

ANYA HINDMARCH I’M NOT A PLASTIC BAG RETURNS AS I AM A PLASTIC BAG

T

he limited-edition, reusable canvas tote was created in response to the growing environmental challenge of single-use plastic bags and to inspire people to change their everyday actions. This campaign was at the vanguard of the anti-plastic bag movement. The British Retail Consortium estimated that in 2006, the UK alone used 10.6bn plastic bags, and this figure dropped to 6.1bn in 2010. Specifically, Sainsbury’s cut the number of bags they gave away by 58% in the two years that followed the campaign, giving out 312m fewer bags in 2008 than 2009 and saving 13,200 tonnes of virgin plastic over two years. “When you throw something away, there is no away” “Since our 2007 I’m NOT a Plastic Bag project, I have not been able to get these words out of my

head. The problem of single use plastic and landfill is far from over, however the mission has shifted from simply being about the ‘awareness’ of using less plastic, to being more about the ‘circularity’ of the use of materials in the supply chain. That is why I have spent the last 2 years developing I AM A Plastic Bag” Anya Hindmarch Following on from the I’m Not A Plastic Bag project in 2007, Anya Hindmarch has created I Am A Plastic Bag. Made from an innovative new fabric which is created from recycled plastic bottles and coated with recycled plastic windshields, the collection uses the incredible technology and craftsmanship that is synonymous with the brand. It has taken two years of testing and researching techniques to find

the best methods and partners to create the I Am A Plastic Bag Collection. The luxurious, cotton canvas feel fabric used to make I Am A Plastic Bag is woven from a yarn created from the plastic bottles. The plastic bottles are first sorted, shredded, washed and then turned into pellets. These pellets are melted and extruded into fibres that are then spun and woven to create the fabric. It takes 32 x half litre bottles to make each large tote. To create a weather-resistant durable finish, the fabric is then coated in recycled PVB, a product which is extracted from old car windshields. To our knowledge, this is the first time that this has been done. The coated fabric is made by our partners in Taiwan. who were the only people who could provide the GRS certified recycled coating. Taiwan has one of the most efficient recycling systems in the world and is also a pioneer in recycling innovation. The bag is trimmed with leather. Whilst the initial plan was to use vegan or recycled leather for the trim, after much research and expert advice, it was concluded that responsibly sourced leather was the best material as the alternatives contained unacceptably high levels of polyurethane. The leather used is a by-product of the meat industry and is sourced from a tannery in Northern Italy close to where the bag is made. The tannery is gold-rated by The

Leather Working Group. They use traceable European hides that incur no de-forestation. This project is about progress not perfection. Work is underway to create the coated fabric in Italy, as soon as we can find a partner who can do this for us using recycled PVB rather than virgin plastic. And whilst we don’t believe that carbon offsetting is the answer, we have partnered with EcoAct - a global climate change consultancy - to measure the emissions associated with the I Am A Plastic Bag collection and to make this a carbon neutral project. Both the project and the Company have been awarded the Butterfly

Mark from Positive Luxury. This is a symbol of trust earned by brands that have adopted sustainability as a business strategy. Brands are assessed holistically across the following areas: governance, social and environmental frameworks, community impact and innovation. Anya Hindmarch and NET-A-PORTER offered a prelaunch of a limited number of I Am A Plastic Bags on February 15th for London Fashion Week. At the same time, instead of doing an event, Anya Hindmarch will close their London stores for three days and fill them with used plastic bottles to make a statement about the amount of plastic that is thrown away. It will take over 90,000 used plastic bottles to fill the stores, which have been collected by Anya Hindmarch team from their local communities. This may sound like a huge number, but this is the number of plastic bottles that are purchased globally every six seconds. The full collection of four colours will launch mid-April in Anya Hindmarch London stores, online and with Matches Fashion in mid-April. Exclusive launches then roll out with Isetan in Tokyo, Lane Crawford in Hong Kong and Mainland China, David Jones in Australia, Aizel in Moscow and Anya Hindmarch global stores. Each territory will have its own exclusive colours. Full collection available April at www.anyahindmarch.com/en-GB/ i-am-a-plastic-bag.html l

WAYS TO MASTER THE 2020 KITCHEN

Curtis Stone

FROM CHEF

FROM CONNECTIVITY TO COOKTOPS AND THE LATEST GADGETS, THE EVERPROGRESSING KITCHEN OF 2020 PROVIDES ENDLESS OPPORTUNITIES TO SIMPLIFY LIFE IN THE HOME.

W

hether cooking for his family, hosting a dinner party or serving up Michelinstarred dishes, Chef Curtis Stone believes in cooking smarter, not harder. Having tested, mastered and embraced many of 2020’s kitchen advancements, Stone shares four ways to master the kitchen this year with maximum flavor and minimum effort.

1

What’s your favorite tool of 2020? “For quite some time, the thought of bringing technology into the kitchen felt a little out of place for me. However, as someone who is always on the go, connected appliances have really become a time-saving luxury that help me find more time

to dedicate to the most important things in life, like my family. “What I really love about Bosch home appliances is they believe in technology that is simple to use, which is why their Home Connect appliances are at the top of my list of 2020 kitchen necessities. It’s so convenient - I can preheat my wall oven remotely so make-ahead meals are ready for the oven as soon as I get home. I also manage household chores from my smartphone, so I never have to worry about little things like reordering dishwasher detergent tabs or whether I shut off the hood lights - automations like this are kind of a dream.”

2

There are so many different types of cooktops - electric, induction, gas. Which do you recommend? “At my restaurant, Gwen, we cook all of our meat over a traditional open flame for a straight-fromthe-fire essence and perfect char. However, it’s no secret I’m a big fan of newer methodologies like induction cooktops for faster boiling and easy cleanup. From a chef’s perspective, precision, power and efficiency are key to creating flavorful dishes that will keep your guests coming back for more. This is one of the reasons why I love the new Bosch FlameSelect gas cooktop.

54

“FlameSelect brings the accuracy of induction to the gas cooktop through nine very precise flame levels - from simmering delicate sauces to achieving the perfect sear over high heat - so you never need to guess the intensity of the flame. You just select the flame level needed for your favorite recipe and prepare for great results.”

3

Cooking for a crowd can be overwhelming. What’s your ultimate entertaining secret? “One of my biggest tips when preparing a meal for a crowd is to keep your station (or kitchen) clean throughout the cooking process - this is a chef standard. Whether it’s a big dinner party or an intimate gathering, cleaning as you go prevents clutter that may get in your way and simplifies post-meal cleanup, which is crucial when you have guests waiting for you and your food. “I love that I can place my dirty utensils, mixing bowls, and even large pots and pans right into my connected Bosch dishwasher and just carry on cooking while it does the hard work. I’m also able to start or monitor a load remotely and its quiet performance won’t disrupt the party - dishes can be out of sight and out of mind. Winner!”

FLUENTIAL MARCH / APRIL 2020

4

You recently earned a Michelin star for the seasonal dishes you’re serving up at LA-based Maude. What’s your go-to dish for springtime hosting? “When hosting, I like to cook within the season and keep it simple. Seasonal fruits and vegetables always taste best at their peak and can easily turn a simple dish into something that wows. I always look forward to cooking

t’s natural to long for spring when it’s cold outside. But did you know, there’s a good reason why you may pine for green? Living landscapes are an important part of the outdoor lifestyle that Americans enjoy, but the benefits go beyond the barbeque and backyard baseball. Green spaces are necessary for your health. “The advantages of grass and landscaping surpass the usual physical benefits that result from outdoor activity,” said Kris Kiser, president and CEO, Outdoor Power Equipment Institute (OPEI). “Numerous studies have found that people who spend more time outside or are exposed to living landscapes are happier, healthier and smarter. As you get ready to get outside this spring with your lawn mower and other outdoor power equipment, it’s great to know being outside is good for you.” Researchers have studied the impact of nature on human well-being for years, but recent studies have found a more direct correlation between human health, particularly related to stress, and the importance of people’s access to nature and managed landscapes.

“PREJUVENATION”

THINGS MILLENNIALS CAN DO TO MAINTAIN

THEIR YOUTH

MANY PEOPLE IN THEIR 20’S ARE STRESSED OUT ABOUT HIGH POST COLLEGE STUDENT LOAN DEBT REQUIRING SIDE HUSTLES TO PAY IT OFF. THEY’RE NOTICING TIRED EYES AND PREMATURE WRINKLES AS THEY TURN TO FILTERS TO OPTIMIZE THEIR SOCIAL MEDIA PHOTOS.

1

Use sunblock every day. “The best way to make sure your face is protected from the sun is to use a daily moisturizer with SPF of no less than 30,” explains Dr. Shah. He also suggests applying creams to your neck and chest to postpone wrinkling and sagging in these areas. “The sun protection done daily in your 20’s will pay off greatly in your 40’s,” he says.

2

Get your Vitamin C. “Vitamin C is a huge collagen booster and it also reduces pores and brightens skin, and these are the exact things women in their late 30’s and 40’s complain about

62

most,” he reveals. Foods such as cantaloupe, mango, pineapples, oranges, grapefruits, and berries are all packed with this antioxidant which, when eaten regularly does wonders to sustain a youthful glow.

3

Ditch the fast food and eat more fish. Those late night post partying fries and pizza are to be expected and at 25 are difficult to avoid. Perhaps your metabolism can handle it, for now. Offset these weekend indulgences by eating fish during the week. “Fish oil has fatty acids can erase early wrinkles you may notice. It prevents inflammation which can only make wrinkles more

noticeable and deeper over time. Many millennials who are picky eaters and avoid seafood can get Omega-3’s via supplements but getting it directly from eating fish is best,” Dr. Shah suggests.

4

Quit smoking. Nothing will age you quicker than smoking. “It is possible for a 25-yearold to look 8-5 years younger, within just 3 months after quitting smoking. This number increases after age 30. Women over age 40 who don’t smoke typically look up to a decade younger than their counterparts who still smoke,” says Dr. Shah. There are a gazillion reasons to quit smoking. Linking it to vanity is a pretty powerful motivator.

Decrease your sugar intake.

Maintain your glow with facials and peels.

You really want to start getting mindful about your sugar intake in your 20’s for many different reasons. “Sugars and carbohydrates are a beauty killer because they are pro-inflammatory. Pasta, ketchup, candy, ice cream, and fruit juices are often dietary staples for those under 30. Any inflammation in the body will show up on the face in the form of adult acne, sagging and wrinkling not to mention sallow skin tone,” warns Dr. Shah.

While many millennials are starting off with “Baby Botox” which can postpone wrinkling, Botox isn’t cheap. It also can be a “gateway” treatment which leads to lip injections and fillers that often have a reverse effect making younger women appear older, cautions Dr. Shah. “Lasers and peels have come very far, offer an excellent solution for sun damage, skin texture, pores, acne scarring and cell turnover to stimulate collagen growth. Dr. Shah concludes that millennials who get into a good solid habit of taking care of themselves both inside and out, will create a lifestyle of longevity. “Millennials raised by mothers who may have had breast implants, Botox and lip injections may feel that getting things “done” is normal. This is exactly why I am always very honest when advising patients under 25 on procedures they’re considering.” l

THE CONNECTION BETWEEN

STRESS, GUT HEALTH, AND AUTOIMMUNITY

influential-magazine.com

THE IMMUNE SYSTEM IS A COMPLEX DEFENSE STRUCTURE. RESEARCH HAS COME A LONG WAY IN UNDERSTANDING MANY OF THE MYSTERIES SURROUNDING AUTOIMMUNITY AND THE 100-PLUS DISEASES THAT FALL UNDER ITS UMBRELLA.

H

owever, there are still plenty of questions that remain. Over 50 million people in the United States are estimated to have an autoimmune disease, yet the cause of many of them are unclear, according to the American Autoimmune Related Diseases Association (AARDA). But recently, researchers have discovered a significant link between stress, gut health and autoimmune reactivity, often leading to the onset of particular autoimmune diseases.

In our gut, the intestines are host to gut microbiota, which is the term for the microbe population that aids in proper digestion, barrier function and healthy immunity. Healthy intestinal walls allow water and nutrients to enter into the bloodstream, while keeping harmful bacteria and toxins out. What medical researchers have known is when these walls or barriers are weakened, harmful bacterial toxins can “leak” through. This well-researched condition is referred to as leaky gut syndrome. But one of the mysteries that remained was related to the cause of the breakdown in the intestinal walls. New studies have revealed imbalances in the gut microbiota can trigger an autoimmune response through a chain of events whereby stress exposure alters our gut bacteria, resulting in changes to immune cells which lead to a higher risk of an autoimmune reaction. Specific

66

FLUENTIAL MARCH / APRIL 2020

microbes in the gut pump out protein molecules that mimic a human protein, causing the human defense system to turn on its own cells by mistake, contributing to autoimmune dysregulation. It’s no secret stress breaks us down emotionally, mentally, and physically. Obvious indicators include exhaustion, lack of motivation, changes in appetite and digestive symptoms, including diarrhea and vomiting. But here is what we don’t see: stress can make the intestinal barrier weaker, thus allowing bacteria to leak out and enter the body through the bloodstream and even reaching organs. Further studies on the link between stress and the breakdown of the intestinal barrier have focused on the different types of bacteria that trigger the autoimmune response. While there are quite a few different bacteria, the commonality

influential-magazine.com

is that they all respond to stress by increasing the number of effector T cells, immune cells that play a role in autoimmunity. Over time, this ongoing “cross-reactive” response leads to tissue damage and chronic disease. Among the autoimmune diseases that are triggered by this link are: l Multiple Sclerosis (MS) l Rheumatoid Arthritis l Ulcerative Colitis l Systematic Lupus l Autoimmune Liver Disease l Antiphospholipid Syndrome

It is not easy to identify when there may be a breach in our intestinal lining, leading to “leaky gut” or ultimately autoimmune reactivity. However, if you are experiencing any of the symptoms mentioned above, you should not ignore the warning signs. Instead, consider seeking medical advice and tes-

ting. One screening offered by Cyrex Laboratories, the Array 2 – Intestinal Antigenic Permeability Screen, is a groundbreaking test designed to measure intestinal permeability to large molecules that inflame the immune system and identify the damaging route through the intestinal barrier. Ongoing intestinal discomfort and digestion problems should not be ignored. One of the main things we can all do for our health is to manage our stress. Remembering to stop and take a deep breath during moments of stress can help prevent a gut reaction. Another is to be proactive with our health, which includes eating right, resting well, exercising and getting regular medical checkups. Taking initiative with your health and not ignoring signs of illness could help prevent an autoimmune condition diagnosis down the line. l

So, what’s a would-be consumer to do who’s thirsty for a truly viable rehydration, sports or performanceenhancing beverage solution, but doesn’t want to be duped by their drink of choice? mes Mayo, co-founder of SOS Rehydrate, which is a company that’s developed a new, cutting-edge and healthy electrolyte replacement rehydration beverage engineered for those with active lifestyles. So impactful is his company’s solution, it proffers rehydration comparable to an I.V. drip to help people avoid and reverse mild to moderate dehydration. Mayo doesn’t just talk the talk, he’s walked the walk, literally. As a former pro athlete of a caliber sponsored by a sports drink company, he still suffered dehydration and performance issues in relation. His brother, who is also a competitive athlete and with whom he cofounded the company, also suffered debilitating hydration — an actual collapse — that caused him to not make it onto a world championship team he’d set his sights on. This led the pair to begin formulating the most optimal, medical and science-driven formula on the market. Mayo’s military service in hot climates also factored into his passion for creating a bestin-class rehydration solution. Mayo personally experienced dehydration during deployments and saw other soldiers suffer the same. In fact, Mayo says dehydration is the number one non-combat casualty, a result of soldiers working in extreme climates at the edge of human performance, having to carry heavy gear and equipment and often marching for hours even before participating in actual combat. A recipe leaving soldiers exhausted and severely dehydrated, from Mayo’s first person accounts.

l Sugar is not an electrolyte. Why pay extra mo-

ney for excess sugar when what you really need are electrolytes. In truth, only a very small amount of sugar is required to help transport electrolytes and water into the cells as part of the sodium glucose co-transport system. In fact, this system is most effective when it utilizes one molecule of sugar and one molecule of sodium in combination, which helps create the fastest and most effective way to transport water into the cells for hydration. Even water rehydration and other drinks that do actually claim to utilize the sodium glucose co-transport system have been shown to contain excess sugar to enhance taste, apparently discounting the fact that that this added sugar commensurately increases calorie count and actually undermines cellular H2O absorption. For clarity, sugar is a fuel and it’s a proven fact that it is not an electrolyte, so consumers seeking a maximized rehydration beverage should seek those with the minimum amount of sugar to help the body best absorb electrolytes and water. A glut of rehydration beverage brands on the market add excess sugar, don’t optimize the sodium-glucose co-transport system to make the drink sweeter, or both.

For those on the playing field, battle field or just seeking to improve their performance in their personal or professional lives, below are a few of Mayo’s myth-debunking “buyer beware” truths that’ll help shoppers steer clear of ineffective or even harmful rehydration and sports beverages in favor of those spurred by sound science. MARCH / APRIL 2020

Excess sugar dehydrates and undermines energy. Beyond the above-stated concerns, too

l

much sugar also leeches sodium and water from the body cells, which can cause dehydration. If there is excess sugar in a drink, even one engineered as a rehydration solution, then you can trigger reverse osmosis. The body’s reverse osmosis process occurs when there is an incorrect balance of sugar to sodium. Sodium always follows sugar and water always follows sodium. In a drink that is correctly balanced (utilizing the sodium glucose co-transport system) then the water and electrolytes optimally flow into the cells. In high sugar drinks there is too much sugar for the quantity of sodium and, as such, sodium and then water is actually leeched from the cells and passed out of the body as urine. This can lead to dehydration — the opposite effect for a rehydration beverage one has spent their hardearned dollars to purchase. Not to be underestimated, dehydration is a physical state that, at any level, can undermine performance and physical outlay by significant percent—and also cause other unpleasant symptoms like headaches and tiredness. Hydration delivered through a correctly calibrated rehydration beverage regulates the bodies’ electrolyte and water balance, allowing it to maintain optimum performance levels and avoid the energy drops associated with energy and sports drinks. l

Zero sugar is a bad thing. Drinks that only

contain sodium do not absorb H2O as fast as drinks that contain a small amount of sugar. As mentioned above, the sodium glucose co-transport system relies on a specific ration of one molecule of sugar and one molecule of sodium to transport electrolytes and water effectively into the cells. Drinks that do not contain any sugar then need to rely on collecting glucose (sugar) throughout their journey within the gut. The salt-only drink will eventually get absorbed, but much slower than one that is perfectly balanced.

74

FLUENTIAL MARCH / APRIL 2020

influential-magazine.com

Also, while it’s commendable that that major sports drinks manufacturers are finally attempting to tackle the excess sugar epidemic, but their “zero sugar” marketing strategy is creating other problems amid the sports and rehydration beverage category. Not the least of which is the fact that artificial sweeteners, then needed to make the beverage palatable, can contribute significantly to obesity, even more than plain sugar, coupled with the reality that zero sugar reduces the H2O absorption.

Tablet-based electrolyte drinks deliver suboptimal results. Tablets dissolve via fizz or other l

breakdown method, leaving residue on the bottle in which it was inserted. That begs the question: what will it be doing to your body? Tablets are made from powder that has been fused together under pressure, requiring excess ingredients within them to activate the breakdown process when water is added. These added ingredients tend to be fizzy to create effervescence. As such, these tablets can lead to gastrointestinal distress that is directly correlated to the ingredients used in the tablet. So, with these, consumers are imbibing more than just the electrolytes they desire. Plus, users will also drink in some of those extra ingredients that leave a residue on the side of the bottle. Moreover, tablets are often touted as being easily portable but, in reality, they tend to come in packs of 10 that need to be transported altogether rather than individually, per tablet. And, if any get wet while being carried, they all dissolve either partially or completely. In fact, in hot and humid environments these tablets frequently absorb atmospheric moisture and end up in ruin; money wasted. l

Electrolyte drinks often miss the mark.

There is a current trend around electrolyte waters. However, if you look at the ingredients, these kinds of beverages contain “trace” elements of said electrolytes. And, they tend to be the kind of electrolytes found naturally in some springs, or that have been added. Trace minerals means MARCH / APRIL 2020

that they are barely measurable and, thus, do not provide enough in any quantity to be useful in the body by nutritional supplement standards. It’s also imperative to understand that drinking only water can a body to over-hydrate, flushing out the system and reducing the blood’s sodium concentration to dangerously low levels. This is called hyponatremia that, in extreme cases, can lead to death. If you’re reading this narrative, you ostensibly care about what you put into your body and have an interest in gaining the positive effects of rehydration beverages, specifically. So why settle for drinking excess sugar, or beverages with artificial sweetness and flavors? The fewer and more natural ingredients you put into a drink, and in the correct ratios, the easier it will be for the body to absorb it and give you the health and performance gains you desire. The same can be said for adding too many ingredients to make it an “all in one” drink. These kinds of beverage are fashionable and highly mar-

ketable, but simply put: your body will not absorb all the ingredients. So, ultimately, you’re getting far less than you paid for. Having a drink that is wholly scientifically engineered for just one specific purpose, like optimizing cellular hydration, will have the best chance of being absorbed and rendering the myriad of benefits related thereto. Beyond the body, food and beverage purveyors also need to do more to alleviate environmental concerns around the amount of beverage-born trash being disposed of that’s not only filling up our landfills, but also affecting the life and ecosystems in our oceans. Every plastic bottle that we use and regularly throw away takes over 450 years to break down. So, beverage and other manufacturers should not only be focused on “good for you” ingredients, but also eliminating single use plastics from the world through modern options like compostable or non-plastic packaging. Considering that some companies donate money to “green” causes but still manufacture and package in a way that exacerbates environmental issues is disingenuous, and just throwing money at the problem will only go so far. Industry collectively needs to act and demand that manufacturers of food, beverage and all other products lead the change and do their true part to eliminate needlessly harmful waste. To this, Mayo wholeheartedly agrees. As an environmental pioneer in the rehydration beverage category, Mayo says that SOS Rehydrate is committed to packaging that’s fully compostable across all retail channels by 2021. Come spring 2020 the company’s eCommerce Web site and select retailers will stock SOS’s compostable stick packs. l

he collection is named after Arturo Obegero’s grandmother. The designer’s upbringing in Northern Spain is the starting point of his creative process. Having grown up in a matriarchal Spanish family ruled by togetherness, Obegero is deeply inspired by relationships and emotional bonds. This collection is a self-exploration that allows him to affirm himself. It is an exaggeration of his own personal style, at the crossroads of sensuality, sexuality, androgyny, and purity. The collection was partly inspired by Pedro Almodóvar’s 2011 film The Skin I Live In, with which Obegero deeply connects emotionally. “I loved the brutal romanticism of the movie and its extremely twisted, almost perverted fascination for love, obsession and sex. The cinematography, the score by AlbertoIglesias, and the artistic references really spoke to me.” Obsessed with the film, Obegero initiated a written correspondence with Pedro Almodóvar, who then sent him research material: a signed book, the script, photographs, and texts. “In one of the texts, there was a metaphor comparing the relationship of the characters in the movie to the dance between a bull and bullfighter, and that really struck a chord.”

curved sleeves. The garments are comfortable, with no bonding or fusing material that could restrict the movement – only using wool, jerseys, velvet and satin. Sharp tailoring was the focal point, hence the absence of embellishments, motifs, embroideries. “I wanted to focus on the essence of the line so that’s why everything is black. Black is the ultimate colour, the most powerful. I chose it not only because it represents the ostentatious sobriety of Spain, but also as an homage to my grandfather who passed away three weeks before I finished this collection.” PORTE [SPANISH] /ˈPOɾ.TE/ NOUN 1. In addition to bullfighting, Obegero also delved into Flamenco to create his collection. The Spanish dance exudes energy and power as well as sensuality, elements present at the core of the designer’s work. Dancer Antonio Gades is a constant inspiration for Obegero who admires his passion and severity on stage. “Flamenco embraces every single aspect of our life, from the happiest and most cheerful celebration of living and love to the darkest, most furious expression of sorrow and passing. All of these can be narrated with garments, so that’s what I tried to do.”

Obegero explored the world of Tauromaquia. Although he is unequivocally against the violence in bullfighting, the designer found it challenging to research such brutal tradition and turn it into something beautiful. “I visited Spain’s most prestigious torero tailor, Antonio López, who taught me everything about this age-old tradition from the beliefs to the unbelievable craftsmanship involved.”

PALMIRA is a mix of fantasy and reality. Arturo Obegero gracefully plays with fitted silhouettes and adds a dose of drama with exaggerated volumes. It is also about confidence and self-exploration as the collection flirts with androgyny. Each garment has its opposite sex counterpart so that duality generates ambiguity and blurs the line between feminine and masculine while remaining distinct. But ultimately, it is about Spain’s cultural dichotomy, bringing together the exuberant flamboyance of the south and the rigorous severity of the north.

The eroticism of bullfighters’ outfits inspired the silhouettes from the cropped and fitted vests with high piping pockets to the sportier figure-hugging tops with deep cleavages, to the extremely high-waisted trousers and the cropped jackets with elongated and

“AIMED to create sensuous pieces while EXPRESSING THE SOUL OF my Spanish roots. I wanted to translate these beautiful emotions and gestures into garments by combining structure and fluidity, second-skin and traditional couture volumes.” l

who married her handsome prince. Weren’t she and Harry supposed to live happily ever after?

Male Characters Have Greater Agency and Power -- Especially in Royal Circles.

If you look at their story from the perspective of real fairy tales, the answer is no.

One interesting discovery was male characters have greater agency and power than female ones, particularly among royalty. We learned there is an active male character in 81% of the stories, but only an active female character in 28% of them. By active, I mean the opposite of passive. (Sleeping Beauty is passive: much of the story unfolds while she is unconscious.) And not surprisingly, agency and power are related. We identified the person in each story who had the most impact on others and classified that individual as the one who is most powerful in the fairy tale1 . We discovered the most powerful person in fairy tales is a man 80% of the time. Women are only powerful in 20% of the stories and they’re usually not royalty—they’re stepmothers and witches.

Read even a few of them and you will see happily ever after is often elusive or questionable for women who marry a Prince or King. Cinderella is a perfect example. The Prince, who has status and wealth, is drawn to Cinderella for her beauty and gowns. Yes, gowns. Interestingly, in both versions of the story — one by the Grimms and the other by Charles Perrault — she goes to a ball and dazzles him with her fine clothing. It’s never mentioned in either story that she’s clever or interesting. Nor is there any mention of a conversation between Cinderella and the Prince as a couple: just dancing. The ball has been specifically set up for the Prince to select a wife and it appears that selection will occur primarily based on appearance. Sadly, beauty fades over time. It would seem Cinderella is bringing less to the party than the prince and therefore her power in that relationship will be low. Which does not bode well for happiness. When her beauty fades, will the Prince still be so interested in her if that’s primarily what she’s offering? My firm analyzed 169 of the 200 Grimms’ fairy tales, which are the precursors to all major fairy tales today. This collection includes the most beloved ones such as Cinderella, Snow White, Sleeping Beauty and Rapunzel. We used statistical methods to identify hidden patterns and determine what fairy tales are really saying, to analyze characters’ emotions and discern who has power, who suffers and who marries up and why. Much of what we learned suggests in real fairy tales, women - especially those who marry a prince - are unhappy.

Looking specifically at the correlations between royalty and power, we found male royalty holds power and makes things happen in fairy tale land. Kings are the most powerful character 55% of the time, princes 30% of the time and princesses 12% of the time. Queens are only powerful in 3% of stories. It’s not too dissimilar to what’s happening in Britain. Meghan appears to be one of the least powerful royals. When she has been treated poorly in the press, Prince Harry has been the one who has released statements shaming the press about their treatment of her.

Queens and Princesses are Sad and Frightened If we look further into the characters and at the emotions they experience, we get a clearer view of what it’s like to be royalty. We found both princes and kings express happiness more than any other emotion; Almost half (41%) of kings’ expressions and over half (56%) of princes’ expressions are happy ones.

1For example, in Hansel and Gretel, the little girl has the most power because her actions have the greatest impact when she pushes the witch into the oven.

In contrast, queens express the emotion of sadness the most (41% are sad). And although princesses express happiness when they find their prince, the next most often expressed emotions by this group are sadness (26%) and fear (22% of expressions). This is not so surprising given princesses in fairy tales are likely to be in terrible situations such as being captured and locked away or tormented by a stepmother such as in the story of Snow White. They have little power to change their situation. Queens also face tremendous difficulties: they’re often under siege by other women who long to remove them and take their place. They’re also sometimes attacked by their mother in laws. For example, in the tale The Six Swans, the king’s mother constantly criticizes her daughter in law openly and then steals her grandchild right after the birth. She then claims the queen murdered her own child. In many of these stories, the king is often the one who determines if the queen should be removed and punished. Clearly queens are under a lot of pressure, have many jealous eyes on them, and are often victimized. Like princesses, they have very little power. Queens give us insight into what life is like for women after marriage with a royal man in fairy tales, and it’s not looking good. I imagine they would appear and behave much like videos I’ve seen of Meghan Markle. The Duchess often looks very sad and resigned to her lack of power. Clearly, she was more distraught than met the eye by the tremendous pressure of being a royal family member, the press’ brutal treatment of her and the lack of concern from other royal family members. Given what fairy tales portend, perhaps what’s truly shocking is not that Meghan was unhappy, but that she had the agency -- and the nerve -- to opt out. l

InFluential Magazine: Sebastian, where were you born? Sebastian Jimenez: I was born in Mexico City. InFluential: For how long have you been in the music industry? Sebastian: I’ve been professionally involved four years, but I have been practicing music ten years. InFluential: One of your biggest performances has been at the Forum with Mana. Speak to us about that experience. Sebastian: That was incredible. Put yourself in front of 16,000 people shouting at you and imagine how that sounds, even louder than my guitar. The fans loved the show and playing with Mana was incredible. Every member of the band has a huge heart and they show it on and off stage. InFluential: Any more highlights from this performance? Sebastian: With respect to Mana, they broke a record of having the most booked dates at the arena. They had seven concerts in a row, and I played on the first one they had on September 20, 2019. InFluential: We know you’ve also played with Gloria Trevi and Alejandra Guzman. Tell us about that experience. Sebastian: The two singers were asked to perform at the Latin American Music Awards in 2017 and they called me to perform with them because they’d heard me playing before and they liked my work. Also, they needed a rock and roll looking guitarist, so I was the perfect fit for them. InFluential: What was your role specifically while playing at the Latin American Music Awards? hase the High chronicles the culture of online dating obsessed with ‘swipe’ and ‘insta’ culture that can be as addicting as it is isolating in the virtual worlds we’ve created. The song will be available on iTunes, Spotify, Tidal, as well as other platforms worldwide. In 2017, Lauren released her debut EP American Dream. The title track was co-written and produced by Andrew Williams, multi-platinum producer and song writer known for his work with T-Bone Burnette and Jessica Simpson. The song Rule Breake was written and produced by longtime Ludacris collaborator, Josh ‘Igloo’ Monroy. A Thomas Godel remix of the track peaked at #6 on the Swiss dance charts along with receiving commercial radio play in German and Switzerland. Alongside her musical proclivities, Lauren has been featured extensively as a model. She has appeared in magazines the likes of GQ, Esquire, Maxim, Runway Magazine, and Le Fair Magazine.

Lauren’s additional credits include a licensing deal for her composition Around the Globe for a Volkswagen radio spot in 2016. She has a classically trained voice with a master’s degree in Opera from Southhampton University in the United Kingdom and earned a bachelor’s degree in Opera from Northwestern University. You can find more on Lauren Carter on her website at www.LaurenCarterOnline.com or on Instagram @LaurenElizabethCarter. InFluential Magazine: Lauren, you’ve been hard at work on your new single Chase the High. Would you tell us what the song is about? Lauren Carter: The song is about the pitfalls of chasing instant gratification. I speak about swiping on a dating app while searching for an elusive match. In my experience, many men on dating apps are lured into a state of perma-swiping. Always looking for something better. It goes hand in hand with the culture of Instagram. It’s a dopamine hit, a temporary high. Not as fulfilling as the real thing, just like any addictive behavior.

InFluential: What was the creative process behind this new single? Laura: I was hung up on an idea of using a song with drums and bass with this groove before I came up with the lyrics for the song. I was dating a bassist, Jason Speerbecker, briefly. While I was dating him, I asked if he was interested in developing the concept with me. We sat down and patched it out, and I think at that point, I had been thinking about the frustration of dating apps and the Instagram culture. I took the demo to Jason and I made one for my go-to producers, Josh Monroy of Studio 1 Zero. I called up lyricist Debra Gussin and she helped us write the final version of the lyrics. InFluential: What would you say has been the difference between crafting Chase the High and your previous EP effort American Dream? Lauren: Oh, great question. First, is the song style. Chase the High is much more of a beat-driven, electronic song. I normally don’t start a song from the beat up. I start with lyrics and a chord progression on the piano. This was a difference in approach. Where I was at in my life and the topic of the song are also totally worlds apart. The song American Dream was written as a love letter with a lot of nostalgia written in. Chase the High is a lot more forwardly sexual. American Dream is a love letter to an unsustainable relationship and / or a love letter / goodbye to rock-nroll and an unsustainable dream or lifestyle. I was also in a relationship when I crafted American Dream. I was trying to make that relationship work and looking forward to a new phase of my life. Chase the High is about the frustration at a situation, at aspects of current culture, and at other people. You can hear the desire to break into something more concrete or meaningful. If there’s a similarity between the songs, it’s that there’s a warning in both.Like....beware of this behavior, beware of this situation. I guess I think about this type of thing a lot. Be careful what you wish for, who you are associating with, and what you are looking for because you bring a lot of what you project into your own life. MARCH / APRIL 2020

All my songs are going to be a little sad or ironic. That’s just how I write. It doesn’t matter if they are sexy, yearning, or nostalgic — the topic and the tone is never going to be straight forward. InFluential: In the time between these two releases, what do you think you’ve learned about the songwriting process? Lauren: I’ve learned there’s great value in collaboration, though you need to write with people who truly understand your ideas. I like to come up with the poetic kernel of the song and the basic music concept on my own. That’s me alone, brainstorming, and tinkering at the piano. Whenever I hear something really cool that stirs off an idea, with my notebook or with a bottle of wine mulling over ideas. I love collaborating to bring new subtleties to that initial idea of mine, to flesh out what I can’t see or can’t finish and let them riff off each other. I also appreciate working with people who are experts in instruments I’m not, especially if I’m writing with it in mind. Between the two releases, I have learned to trust my songwriting abilities and bring an idea to the table. All my best songs are based on something I started writing at home and finished with a team. I’ve learned to trust my ability as a trained musician to know what makes a good song, to have a great ear, to bring good ideas as a poetic writer, to draw from my life and make a song people will respond to, yet also the value of working with awesome and accomplished musicians, writers, and producers to make a song the best it can be. It’s a great pleasure. InFluential: How has your classical musical background influenced you throughout your career as a recording artist? Laura: It’s given me discipline, vocal range, and influences the way I write music. I had to study music theory during my degree path which also gave me the ability to view my work and performances as an outside critic. The flipside is I’ve had producers want me to explore classical sounds in my recordings, which doesn’t make sense because of my background. The vocal production of classical versus

modern styles is just completely different. I wouldn’t want to mix the two. Not to get into the technical, but you don’t want a massively raised soft palette for a pop song. Doing one doesn’t mean you can’t do the other. It’s just two different techniques of using your voice. I know how to do that technique for classical and I know how to use other techniques for non-classical. I’m grateful for the range and control classical training offered though. More and more, I keep reading about big pop stars like Billie Eilish who did as much, if not more, choir than I did. Choir is EVERYTHING for singers. I encourage all singers to try to stick with choir if they can. Believe me, it helps. InFluential: For those in the Los Angeles area, where can fans see you perform? Lauren: I usually perform at Hotel Cafe, Bar Lubitsch, Bar 20, and will be coordinating my next show soon. For an official single release show, I’m looking to do something more exclusive. Months later, as the pity party started to lift, I found myself wondering what do I want to teach my child about her dad leaving? This was probably my first sane moment. The best decision I had made was the one to stop being in “victim mode” and choosing to step up to the plate and be a role model. I remember I was out with single women one night and a woman I barely knew blurted out “Who is going to want you with a young child?” I turned to her, glaringly, and said, “Oh no, who is going to be lucky enough to be with me and my child?” My confidence grew stronger in all the conscious decisions I had to make for myself and my child. When I was let go a year and a half later, it led me to take another leap of faith and start up my private practice (which is still thriving after thirty-plus years). I would like to share some parenting lessons I have learned along the way: 1. Try not to feel sorry for yourself because your child will also feel sorry for him / herself. This might be when you and your family want to seek professional help to prevent the pity party from taking over your life.

I also made sure to only date when my child was at her father’s house. We had a happy, joyous, and stable home environment without people coming in and out of our lives at this time. My daughter lovingly calls those years as some of the best years (she is now thirty). Some higher power had to be watching over me because I had started this journey as totally clueless. For instance, I desperately needed a job. Back when I was in my master’s program, I was working out of a boiler room selling insurance. IS IT YOU OR AN ID THIEF?

Y

ou’re required to show your ID for something and you wait as the person studies both your face and the photo on the driver’s license, passport, or other document, making sure you’re not an impersonator trying to pull a fast one.

IT’S A MOMENT MOST PEOPLE HAVE EXPERIENCED. Hyduchak says there are a few categories of document fraud:

lograms or other current standards that are essential parts of a legitimate version of that document.

False documents. This is a document that belongs to one person, but that another person tries to use to authenticate himself.

Illegitimate documents. TheThese days, artificial intelligence is playing a role like that security person, with software that allows validation of IDs remotely through digital document verification. This way you can do business through your smartphone, and someone on the other end can make sure you’re who you say you are and that a thief hasn’t stolen your identity.

se documents are false. They have characteristics such as missing ho-

And that’s especially important at a time when identity theft has been on the rise, says Stephen Hyduchak, CEO of Aver (www.goaver.com), an identity-verification service. “Fraudsters are getting creative, but so is technology,” Hyduchak says. “It’s important to keep up because there are so many ways to create fake documents that allow someone to claim to be you and maybe even get away with it.”

Modified documents. This is when an original document is altered. Hydu-

HOW AI USES DOCUMENT VERIFICATION TO KEEP YOU SAFE chak says the alterations can be caught with software that detects whether fonts and text match the originals. How do fraudsters even get the ID documents to start with? Hyduchak says it’s a matter of data security breaches – and often a combination of more than one breach. He gives this example. Just recently, the cryptocurrency exchange

Binance, using a third-party KnowYour-Customer (KYC) provider, was the victim of a hack that leaked over 10,000 photographs of purported Binance KYC data. This breach affected up to 60,000 people. “On Binance, users buy and sell cryptocurrency, something that is privacy-centric by its very nature, but still vulnerable,” Hyduchak says. “Coupling leaks like this with major data breaches like Equifax and Target, our personal information can be manipulated for the fraud with some basic photoshop work.” A digital verification process is one way to head off any subterfuge, Hyduchak says. For example, his company has a program that works this way: The user captures a picture of their ID or passport using their smartphone. The user then takes a selfie to verify they are the same person pictured on the ID or passport. Facial recognition software compares the images through algorithms.

About Stephen Hyduchak Stephen Hyduchak is the CEO of Aver (www.goaver.com), an identity-verification service. Hyduchak worked in corporate finance for companies such as PRA Health Sciences before finding the entrepreneur bug. He began working on media and design for small businesses, which led him to consulting projects in the blockchain space, and eventually to founding Aver.

“As time goes on,” Hyduchak says, “I think you are going to see digital facial checks become the standard for ID verification, and that will eliminate most types of fraud.” l MARCH / APRIL 2020
