EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW
aving been featured throughout her storied modeling career in over 350 magazines around the world, the former face of Olay has walked the runways for designers like Vera Wang, Giorgio Armani, and Bagley Mischka, to name a few. She's been seen on billboards around the country for brands like Ralph Lauren POLO and has made appearances on Good Morning America, The Oprah Winfrey Show, The Today Show, The View, and more. But while she's lived a very public life, she's guarded quite the secret. While at the highest point of her modeling career, Camerone was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. Because of the costs of care - one of her medications was $65,000 a year - she chose to keep her illness a secret and continue working. Now she is passionate about helping find a cure. In that arena, it’s without a doubt she is making a real impact. Camerone has raised millions of dollars for various charities and never charges a speaker's fee. Of course, fashion is still very much a part of her life and one of the things she's quite passionate about. She was recently featured in the New York Times for her jawdropping appearance at NY Fashion Week 2019, and has returned to the runway, calling it one of the proudest moments of her career. She also has quite the collection of couture and vintage finds in her closet. These days there’s no "typical" day for Camerone, except she’s living life to the fullest and enjoying life with her family. Although she's lived quite the jetsetting lifestyle, she is incredibly down to earth. When she isn't traveling, she and her husband spend their time in Phoenix, Arizona or their second home in Sedona, Arizona. Parker’s story is one of trepidation, strength, and determination. She’s lives her life in a manner best for her; with no apologies. I’m thrilled to share our candid and honest conversation. Hopefully, you’ll come away as awe inspired as I was after learning her fascinating story.

I’d have to say my level of confidence can be contributed largely to the wonderful life lessons imparted by my parents. I’m so thankful for the love, compassion, empathy, and supportive encouragement they gave my brother and I during our formative years. And, even as an adult, they’re still my biggest fans and I, theirs.
”
William Jackson, MBA: What are the fondest memories of your childhood and how have these impacted your life as a contributing adult? Camerone Parker: Bill and Elise Chambers are my amazing parents. They raised us with so much love and support, encouraging us as our individual personalities and interests became evident. My brother developed an interest in math and science, and I was gifted in the arts, music, and languages. At the core of whatever we did, we were encouraged to communicate in a positive manner and never disrespect others. My parents are an excellent example of practicing what they preached. I’ve never seen them disrespect themselves, one another or others. William: Your name Camerone is beautiful. Why were you giving that name? Does it have meaning to your family? Camerone: I grew to love my name which is from my dad’s side of the family. I’m the third woman in the family to have the name. Because my name is so different in spelling and often given to males, I was teased often during my younger years. But I believe this SEPTEMBER / OCTOBER 2019

is where I got my confidence; instead of being made to feel less than because of my name, I embraced it with every fiber of my being. Elise, of course, is my mother’s name which I’m proud to share with her. William: What was your level of appreciation of fashion when you were a kid? Were you a fan? Camerone: Both mom and dad were interested in fashion and have always had a unique sense of style. I recall when traveling, they’d bring along a huge number of suitcases to contain their clothing. My personal style would change as often as I’d change personally. While in college, I grew 4 ½ inches so of course my fashion sense had to adjust. My mother encouraged me to be comfortable with change. She would say often, “Look at art. You don’t have to like it, but I encourage you to appreciate it”. William: When you first started modeling, what was it like for you? Camerone: Modeling was not on my immediate radar. I had the desire to work as a diplomatic translator. At the age of 23, I was discovered by John Casablancas who encouraged me to pursue a modeling career which I did, with the assurance I could fall back on my education if necessary. As for my modeling look, I consider myself different; unique. William: Was it daunting when you realized you’d have to make important decisions on how to brand yourself? Camerone: Branding myself was not a focus; I just didn’t have to. Things have certainly changed in today’s fashion industry. My focus was making sure the people around me were solid and had the team spirt. It took a team to get up on that “billboard”. William: You always seem so confident, even early in your career. Is that an innate quality or one you had to assume to perform your job? Camerone: I’d have to say my level of confidence can be contributed largely to the wonderful life lessons imparted by my parents. I’m so thankful for the love, compassion, empathy, and supportive encouragement they gave my
brother and I during our formative years. And, even as an adult, they’re still my biggest fans and I, theirs. William: What are your thoughts about sexual and power dynamics in today’s fashion industry, particularly considering recent widespread allegations? Camerone: Unfortunately, these dynamics have been around for years. I was fortunate not to find myself in compromising situations. I operated with the mindset business is business. Any business that needed to be discussed was done in association with a member of my team. I never allowed myself to be alone with a member of the opposite sex “in the name of business”. If something doesn’t feel right; it probably isn’t, and I’ve believed that for a long time. This mindset has protected me from many potentially compromising situations. William: What words of wisdom would you impart to young people interested in pursuing a career in the fashion industry? Camerone: I’d encourage young people to be smart. My philosophy is: 1. My team is my tribe. You don’t exclude your manager or agent from any business dealings. 2. Always trust and follow your instincts and err on the side of caution. 3. Be sure to do research. Learn about and understand the fashion industry and the major players. 4. Be realistic and understand the fashion industry is not a long-term career. Thus, it’s important to be educated in other pursuits. William: In January 1998 you were diagnosed with MS. Would you please speak about that circumstance? Camerone: I was very excited about a modeling assignment for which I had been booked in Los Angeles. Early in the assignment, I and four other models, became very sick with meningitis. In my case, the illness progressed to spinal meningitis. To diagnose and treat the meningitis, I was assigned a neurologist who ran a battery of tests. The tests results revealed symptoms common to MS. After consulting with additional SEPTEMBER / OCTOBER 2019

healthcare professionals and considering my responses to a series of health history related questions during my follow up appointment, all roads led to the dreaded diagnosis I have symptoms of MS. I was devastated. Simply crushed. I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. Fortunately, the neurologist and other healthcare professionals, were empathetic, patient, and kind and made sure I understood the diagnosis and how I’d be impacted immediately and long-term. William, I still tear up every time I think about this day. William: What is the medical description of MS? Camerone: MS, is a long-lasting disease that can affect your brain, spinal cord, and the optic nerves in your eyes. It can cause problems with vision, balance, muscle control, and other basic body functions. The effects are often different for everyone who has MS. Some people have mild symptoms and don’t need treatment. Others will have trouble getting around and doing daily tasks. MS happens when your immune system attacks a fatty material called myelin, which wraps around your nerve fibers to protect them. Without this outer shell, your nerves become damaged. Scar tissue may form. The damage means your brain can’t send signals through your body correctly. Your nerves also don’t work as they should to help you move and feel. As a result, you may have symptoms like: - Trouble walking - Feeling tired - Muscle weakness or spasms - Blurred or double vision - Numbness and tingling - Sexual problems - Poor bladder or bowel control - Pain - Depression - Problems focusing or remembering William: Upon learning your diagnosis of MS, how was your life changed?

Camerone: William, I learned to be more empathetic toward others. Also, I make it a priority to take care of myself. This is excellent advice my father always told me to practice. Most noteworthy, I learned to value hard work. I selected a treatment which had a yearly cost of $65,000 which I had to pay being self-employed without healthcare insurance. Hence, I made the decision to keep my diagnosis a secret so I could continue to work and pay for my medication. Some days were very difficult. I was tired often and suffered extreme side effects from the medication, which is common, but I kept pushing forward. As I reflect on these times, it amazes me how I was able to keep working during the difficult times. I wanted to continue to live so I had to do what was necessary. William: How difficult was it share your diagnosis with your family? Camerone: It wasn’t difficult at all to involve my family. In fact, I visited my family the day I received the diagnosis and it was their love and support which made a difficult day bearable. William: Do you have a personal philosophy that has helped you cope with having a chronic illness? Camerone: My philosophy is to never give up. You either give up or get up. When you give up, you lose your chance to get up and make a difference. SEPTEMBER / OCTOBER 2019

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW
William: What advice would you give to someone who has just been diagnosed with MS? Camerone: It’s very important to get a second opinion from a skilled neurologist who specializes in MS. Also, become educated about the disease as much as possible. The National Multiple Sclerosis Society is an excellent non-biased resource and they make regular updates to www.mssociety.org. I encourage those suffering from the symptoms of MS to involve others. A positive and supportive team is very important to maintaining physical and mental wellness. There’s no shame in having a chronic illness and when others understand the limitations, they’ll have many opportunities to learn the value of empathy. William: Are there any silver linings to having MS? Camerone:There’s always a lesson in life’s circumstances. I draw so much strength from being a spokesperson when I have many meaningful opportunities to help others cope with the challenges of MS. The sense of community, people helping people, is so beautiful. There truly is more happiness in giving than there is in receiving. William: Do you believe we will see a cure for MS in our future? Camerone: There have been tremendous strides in the early diagnosis and treatment of MS since my diagnosis in 1998. Treatment options have improved and are more varied and available. Also, there are more options to help patients manage the cost of medical treatment. I have strong faith that in the very near future a cure for MS will be found. Until such time, I’ll continue to be a champion fighting the good fight toward the goals helping others to cope and finding a cure for this dreaded disease. William: Since October 2009, you’ve been quite open with the public about sharing your story of living with MS. Of what value is sharing your personal story? Camerone: The love and support I’ve received from sharing my story is profound. The letters, cards, text

messages, and emails are so encouraging and always come at the right time. Please know I’ve saved every one of these thoughtful messages. Reflecting often on these have helped me maintain some level of peace in my darkest hours. William: You’ve taken on the charge of being a leading powerful celebrity voice in patient advocacy for MS. Why is this responsibility so important to you? Camerone: I’m invested in finding a cure faster. It’s important for me to continue being of service to others. Hence, toward my efforts of being philanthropic and giving, I’ve decided not to charge speaker’s fee, I pay for all expenses related to travel and administration, and I talk every opportunity to make monetary donations. I want to change the face of MS, and I’m going to do just that. William: Speak about Dr. Robert Reid McCulloch. Camerone: Dr. Robert Reid McCulloch is my very supportive husband. I appreciate his desire to want to travel with me. He really is the best part of me. He’s profoundly talented healthcare professional and loves what he does. William: Being the wife of Dr. McCulloch does what for your soul? Camerone: William, my world with Robert is in vibrant technicolor where our simple days are in balance with some days of extravagance. One of our favorite things to do every night is to lie in bed and watch some silly show on the History channel. William: How do you plan to continue living your best life? Camerone: I plan to continue celebrating the good days. I’ll never give up, ever. To my mind, a good day is simple being able to arise to a new day. If there’s breath in my lungs, I’ve another opportunity to practice being a giving human. William, being philanthropic is the best medicine ever and I’ll never stop giving to others. l

WAYS TO MAKE THE WORLD A BETTER
PLACE for SENIORS
BY 2050, THE SENIOR POPULATION (ADULTS AGE 65 AND OLDER) WILL BE MORE THAN DOUBLE THAT OF THE WORLD’S YOUNGEST CITIZENS, AND THE NUMBER OF PEOPLE LIVING BEYOND AGE 80 IS EXPECTED TO TRIPLE OVER THE NEXT 30 YEARS.
A
s the aging population increases, some 11.3 million seniors are living alone, according to the Institute on Aging. In addition, women are twice as likely as older men to live by themselves. Without proper support, seniors may face a wide range of issues including limited mobility, chronic conditions, improper nutrition and feelings of loneliness. For example, older adults can have problems chewing or may take medications which interfere with SEPTEMBER / OCTOBER 2019

their appetites. However, research shows lack of companionship may be the biggest challenge.
Offer moral support and a sense of physical safety by volunteering to join them on a walk.
In fact, an AARP survey found 1 in 5 adults over the age of 40 were “socially disconnected,” which can impact health. People who reportedly experienced loneliness and isolation had lower mental well-being scores, and those who were dissatisfied with their level of social engagement were more likely to report a decline in cognitive function, as well.
Social support: Loneliness is common among seniors, especially those who live alone. Show seniors in your area they have a meaningful place in the community and options for companionship. Offer a friendly wave and say hello when you see them out. Invite them to dinner, either at your home or at a restaurant. Have your children or kids you know in the area draw pictures or write letters. Make a date for an afternoon or evening of entertainment, such as cards, a movie or board games.
• • • •
While anyone can benefit from a kind gesture, seniors are some of the most in-need members in many communities. There is likely a wide range of opportunities to enhance the lives of seniors in your area. Numerous programs and agencies exist to help you determine the best way to make a difference. One example is Ready to Care, an initiative from Home Instead Senior Care that challenges people to complete weekly care missions. Each activity guides members through various ways to give to senior-related causes, learn about the aging crisis and issues impacting seniors, and serve seniors through small actions of kindness. Most care missions are simple acts, such as opening a door, learning about Alzheimer’s or helping with a chore. Each week, a new mission is delivered to participants’ phones via text message. Small gestures, like these simple acts of kindness, can go a long way toward improving a senior’s day. Physical assistance: Most seniors are eager to retain their independence, but everyday tasks can pose fall risks or require exposure to harsh weather conditions that can be dangerous to older adults. Offer to bring in the daily newspaper or mail. Mow their lawn or offer to help with other yardwork. Lend a hand in caring for pets, such as taking a dog for a walk or helping clean up waste from the yard.

here are many sustainable wedding ideas out there, with more eco-friendly wedding decorations available and greener options when it comes to catering, invitations, and finding your perfect dress. Here are five easy tips from Verte Luxe CEO, Laura Frecon that will help you have the sustainable wedding of your dreams so you can say “I do,” with a clear conscience. Repurpose and Achieve a One-Of-A-Kind Look For most of us, our gowns will only be worn this one time. That’s why it’s great to consider repurposing a gown by hiring a good seamstress to remake an existing gown and creating your own design. You will be reusing existing materials and creating a oneof-a-kind gown that is your very own. Also, look to eco-friendly wedding gown designers like Celia Grace and Lindee Daniel. These designers are using sustainable materials and fair trade practices.

MILLENNIALS SEEK MINDFULNESS AS A FIX FOR THEIR HIGH STRESS LEVELS Each year millions of Americans make eliminating stress a top priority - it’s especially important to Millennials. Nearly half of them say they’re stressed all the time over everything from money to work, according to a recent survey, and even spending time around “anxious” people can set them off. That same survey also found that Millennials are overwhelmingly looking for an easy solution. One possible answer? Incorporating Japanese Green Tea into one’s daily routine, since it naturally contains the amino acid L-theanine that can help elevate moods and calm worried minds. (Hey, it’s steeped in Zen tradition.) See the full-sized image here to also learn which hours stress Millennials out most.
WHY MOTORCYCLING MAY BE THE ANSWER TO LOWERING STRESS LEVELS Turns out motorcyclists may get more than a glorious sense of freedom from riding. A pioneering new study conducted by researchers at UCLA’s Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior found that motorcycling can also provide several mental and physical benefits. Stress-related hormonal biomarkers decreased by 28 percent among participating riders, to name one thing. And motoring along on the open road for just 20 minutes increased their heart rates an average of 11 percent and their adrenaline levels by 27 percent - like light exercise, though a lot more fun - to name another. Come to think of it, with stress levels on the rise - especially among young adults - anyone looking for that same “glorious sense of freedom” might want to check out the New Rider Course offered at select Harley-Davidson dealers. InFluential: What thrilling historical facts about the beautiful country of Colombia has your family shared with you? Cindy: Colombia is a very warm, welcoming, and generous country. We can currently see how they’ve opened the doors to our Venezuelan brothers and sisters even at their own expense, making them feel at home, and this is historic to me. I’m proud of that because that’s what Colombia is all about. Colombia has constantly fought for democracy, that’s another fact. One more fact and so important to me because I’m a coffee lover, our coffee has made history all over the world because of its excellence and consistency. InFluential: Why the fascination with acting? Cindy: It’s the career I chose, and I’ve put a lot into it and it has given me back much more. InFluential: Describe for us the premise of “The InBetween”? Cindy: The InBetween is a procedural show with a supernatural twist where our lead ‘Cassie’ can speak to the dead who have unsolved business on earth and are stuck in limbo or “the inbetween”. She helps them and feeds intel to our team of detectives. InFluential: How do you relate, if in any way, to your character ‘Maria Salinas’? Cindy: Det. Salinas can hold her own in a room full of men, she’s strong, driven, and serious about her work, as I am as well. I’m very passionate and serious about what I do. My goal is to constantly evolve, grow, and get better every day. This attitude is much like Maria who learns from every case she strives to do,z much like what I strive to do with every role I play. InFluential: How have fans responded to The InBetween? Cindy: It’s the show my friends ask me the most about because they’ve loved it. I get questions about what’s next all the time. InFluential: How do you prepare for a role, to ensure you bring the brightest life to characters you play? Cindy: First, I look at what the characters and I have in common and then build from there. I work with a great

team like William Coarson James, Jennifer Cozza James, my manager Sharon Lane that help with preparation. Lastly, I do the research to determine what the character demands. InFluential: Cindy, how do you remain focused and centered? Cindy: My faith in God centers me. It constantly reminds me of what’s truly important in life. My focus is the greater good; therefore, everything I do I strive to do with love and conviction. InFluential: How important to you is faith? Cindy: As important as breathing. As mentioned previously, it’s everything to me. Honestly, it has sustained me through the most difficult moments and prepared me for better ones. InFluential: Is it your strong faith which helps you navigate the challenging influence of “Hollywood”? Cindy: Absolutely. Hollywood can be the best experience if you’re strong within and the worst if you’re weak. Understanding that your value doesn’t come from fame, money, job or beauty but that it all comes from inside. I’ve learned to not look to my left, right or around but to look up and reach out to what’s above. InFluential: How do you continue to live your best life? Cindy: It’s an everyday choice. I choose to say no to what doesn’t give me peace; let go of what’s toxic; I’ve learned to love me now and love life now; constantly checking in and being selfaware as I choose to love others and appreciate them. We all make mistakes and understanding we are not perfect, making the decision to be kind to ourselves and others constantly, will help us live our best lives as we continue to grow and strive for excellence instead of perfection. InFluential: How will you continue to make a positive impact on those with whom you share this earth? Cindy: It’s easier for people to turn away than to face the issue of human trafficking but I think it will need a global effort to end it. I’m involved with organizations like Justice Speaks that are on the frontlines of this issue helping it end. This is one I’m passionate about and hope I can get even more involved with. l SEPTEMBER / OCTOBER 2019

FINANCIAL TIPS
FOR WOMEN
DO WOMEN WORRY MORE ABOUT SAVING FOR RETIREMENT? THERE ARE MANY REASONS WOMEN MAY BE CONCERNED ABOUT SAVING ENOUGH — THEY HAVE A LONGER LIFE EXPECTANCY; THEY OFTEN EARN LESS THAN THEIR MALE COUNTERPARTS AND THEY MAY HAVE FEWER FULL-TIME WORKING YEARS DUE TO TIME SPENT CARING FOR CHILDREN OR AGING PARENTS. THIS RESULTS IN LOST WAGES AS WELL AS FEWER SOCIAL SECURITY BENEFITS AND RETIREMENT PLAN SAVINGS. 50

owever, women also have an important advantage — they are more goal oriented, says Samantha Anderson, CFP and co-chair of the National Association of Personal Financial Advisors’ (NAPFA) Women’s Initiative. Anderson adds that “the knack women have for concentrating on the future serves them well when it comes to financial planning and saving for retirement.”
savings. Neglecting to save in this way is leaving money and potential investment return on the table, explains Anderson. If you’re not sure what to invest in, Anderson suggests starting with a target-date fund, which provides a diversified allocation that becomes more conservative as retirement (the target date) approaches.
What can you do to plan and save for your future? Anderson offers five important tips:
visor. A holistic financial advisor can help you meet your financial goals during any stage of your life. Anderson explains further, “Fee-only advisors are compensated solely through fees paid by the client, rather than commissions from the sale of a financial product. This means they will provide independent and unbiased advice. Advisors also offer different compensation and service models — such as hourly, flat-fee, ongoing planning or financial check-in projects — making hiring an advisor more accessible.” NAPFA is the country’s leading professional association of fee-only financial advisors, with over 3,600 members. Its members also adhere to a strict Fiduciary Standard of Care, which requires them to place your interests above their own.
1
Develop concrete goals. Anderson explains that setting achievable goals and accomplishing them can help women boost their confidence when it comes to finances. Whether it’s establishing an emergency fund, paying off credit card debt or taking over all bill payments, achieving a financial goal sets you on the right track toward your overall financial well-being and helps prepare you for life events at any age, she says.
2
Use opportunities to save and invest now. Start saving as soon as possible, no matter how small the amount, says Anderson. In particular, she recommends setting aside an emergency cash fund equal to 6-9 months’ worth of expenses to protect against a life-changing event and investing the remainder. Many employers offer matching funds toward a retirement plan, such as a 401(k), and you should be taking full advantage to boost your retirement
3Find a fee-only financial ad-
4
Plan for the worst. Many of Anderson’s clients worry about becoming a financial burden to their families. She recommends developing an estate plan and making sure you have all of the necessary estate documents in place, such as a will to ensure your minor children and belongings are taken care of. You can also execute a
Health Care Power of Attorney, Durable Power of Attorney and Living Will to designate who should make decisions on your behalf in the case of incompetency.
5
Educate yourself and ask questions. Anderson advises clients to utilize financial education resources at least once per week. Spending even 5-10 minutes a week learning about a different financial planning topic is a quick and easy way to boost your financial confidence. For tips, visit https://www.napfa.org/financialplanning/consumer-resources or savvyladies.org. Then ask your advisor questions about your investments. “Would you have a medical procedure done if you didn’t understand what it was for? No, so don’t invest in something without asking all the right questions, either,” Anderson adds. Anderson concludes, “My female clients are great listeners and communicators and have an incredible ability to manage multiple tasks at once, allowing them to think through all different aspects of financial planning, whether that be tax planning, retirement, estate planning, investing or other topics.” She encourages her female clients to be confident and self-assured in investing and financial planning, adding that there are many steps women can take to optimize their future and have a stable, fulfilling retirement. RECORD LOW UNEMPLOYMENT CREATES OPPORTUNITIES FOR
AMERICANS WITH DISABILITIES
WITH UNEMPLOYMENT RATES AT A NEARLY 50-YEAR LOW, MANY BUSINESSES ARE STRUGGLING TO FIND WORKERS. THIS TIGHT JOB MARKET IS OPENING DOORS FOR PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES, AS MANY COMPANIES ARE TURNING THEIR ATTENTION TO DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION IN THE WORKPLACE.
T
hough more Americans with disabilities are working, their unemployment rate is still more than twice that of the overall workforce. An estimated 81% of adults (18+) with developmental disabilities do not have a paid job in the community. WWSome companies view hiring people with disabilities as “the right
52
thing to do,” but not as a strategy that will benefit business. A recent study by the National Organization on Disability found that only 13% of U.S. companies have reached the Department of Labor target of a 7% disability representation among their staff. Often companies don’t know where to find this untapped resource of talent.

Programs like Best Buddies Jobs can help. They match skilled and qualified individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) with businesses seeking enthusiastic and dedicated employees. Job coaches look beyond the typical positions that individuals with IDD might hold, to match job seekers based on their individual talents and interests. The program develops partnerships with employers, assists with the hiring process and provides ongoing support to the employee and employer.
influential-magazine.com
Rob Friedman, former assistant vice president of sponsorship and event marketing at John Hancock, says, “I think a program like Best Buddies Jobs is a terrific asset to John Hancock. It teaches our employees about diversity and working with different populations and certainly having someone like Dudley on staff has taught so many employees here so many great things.”
“We started the program to help improve the quality of life for individuals with IDD, and what we found is that the employers also benefit by getting an extremely dedicated, well-prepared staff member, improved company morale, and a better bottom line,” explains Anthony Kennedy Shriver, Founder, Chairman & CEO of Best Buddies International. “The Jobs program is really a win for all of society since we end up creating employees who can support themselves and contribute to the economy, removing the need for government assistance or parental support.” Dudley Williams III personifies the highly successful program participant. After graduating from Threshold, a Lesley University postsecon-
dary program that prepares young adults who have diverse learning challenges for the world of work and independent living, Williams joined Best Buddies Jobs to work toward his professional goals. “I worked part-time jobs at first ranging from a hotel, to schools, and the Boston Minority Business Development Agency Center as an office assistant,” said Williams. “My ultimate goal was to find a full-time job.” Williams is currently employed full-time as a marketing coordinator at John Hancock in Boston and has become a tireless advocate for employment for people with IDD. “My life has changed dramatically. I’m more confident in myself as a person and more independent at work. I’ve made new friendships as well.”
As companies increase diversity and inclusion, they are discovering employee morale and fiscal performance also improve. Harvard Business Review reports that diverse companies are 70% more likely to capture a new market. Research from renowned global human resources analyst Josh Bersin shows that more inclusive companies have a 2.3 times higher cash flow per employee over a three-year period and are 1.7 times more likely to be innovative leaders in their market. Jobs programs for people with disabilities can provide a costeffective solution to address the tight job market brought on by low unemployment rates and reduce recruitment and training costs associated with repeatedly filling high turnover positions. Hiring people with disabilities is a win for both employees and employers. If you are interested in participating as an employer or applying to the Best Buddies Jobs program, please visit bestbuddies.org/jobs for more information. (BPT) l

THE AMERICAN INGREDIENT
INSPIRING TOP FRENCH CHEFS
C
hefs Laurent Manrique, Roland Passot and Gerald Hirigoyen hold the most envied title of their profession: Maître Cuisinier de France or Master Chef of France. Chefs are chosen to join one of the world’s most prestigious culinary associations through an exhaustive six-month review process that dates to 1951. For the three Bay Area residents and San Francisco restaurateurs, being named a Master Chef of France is “a lifetime achievement, significant career milestone and distinct honor”all in one. This year, they are also honored to play host to the organization’s annual Global Conference in San Francisco. They gathered in advance to discuss what’s inspiring them now and how local ingredients shape their dishes. The common food item on their short lists? Pistachios, with which they are very familiar, having seen the many pistachio orchards that line the landscape throughout central and northern California. “One of our duties as a Master Chef is to participate actively to promote products of ‘top quality,’”
60
PISTACHIO GAZPACHO WITH WATERMELON AND CUCUMBER said Hirigoyen, owner of Piperade. “Pistachios grown here in California, not far from San Francisco, are superior in color and taste. I love to use pistachios because not only are they a great thing visually, they are healthy, too. They’re buttery in flavor, but the lowest in fat, actually. They can go in toppings, fillings and soups.” (See recipe below.) The green nut’s versatility appeals to the proprietor of popular Café del la Presse, Manrique, as well. “When I came to California, I discovered the greatness of cooking with pistachios. There are so many things you can do, from savory dishes to sweet. The inspiration is endless. Put them on salads and in pates. Even when you cook pistachios, they keep that wonderful texture and crunch.” At La Folie on Russian Hill, Chef Passot’s cuisine blends French tradition with contemporary culinary

creativity, and features seasonal, fresh, organic and sustainably harvested fare that is locally sourced whenever possible. This includes pistachios. “French cuisine doesn’t have to be rich to be delicious. I use pistachios because of their natural, healthy fats and oils. Plus they have great flavor and give you energy, just eating them out of hand with an aperitif.” All three attest to the power of pistachios outside the kitchen and snack on the nut for energy during their outdoor pursuits — Passot sailing, Manrique hiking and Hirigoyen cycling. “Health-wise, pistachios are beautiful nuts in terms of what they contain: potassium, antioxidants and fiber. I call them the Super Nuts, and you will find them in my kitchen and in my bike pack,” said Hirigoyen.

PIMENTO CHEESE IS FINALLY
SPREADING ACROSS AMERICA? WELL, IT’S ABOUT TIME ONE OF THE SOUTH’S BEST-KEPT SECRETS FOR YEARS, PIMENTO CHEESE IS FINALLY CATCHING ON WITH THE REST OF THE COUNTRY.
W
hile pimento cheese and things made with it are still only on 4% of U.S. restaurant menus, according to www.datassential.com, that’s an increase of 65% in the last four years. Still, people in the South know to expect puzzled looks when the subject comes up. It’s just so simple: Grated cheese (preferably the sharpest cheddar you can find), diced pimentos and mayonnaise. That’s it. There’s still room for debate in those three basic ingredients: How coarse to

grate the cheese, what kind of mayonnaise and whether it’s OK to substitute roasted red peppers for the pimentos. Additions like hot sauce, cayenne pepper, paprika or cream cheese are all occasions for arguments. Kathleen Purvis, North Carolinabased food writer and author of two “Savor the South” cookbooks, calls pimento cheese “the duct tape of party foods. “You can nuke it, spread it, mix it with something else or slap it on a tray surrounded by crackers.”
If you’re just encountering pimento cheese, there really are endless things you can do with it. Stir it into hot pasta for a shortcut macaroni & cheese, stir it into cornbread batter before baking, put it between two flour tortillas to make fast quesadillas. Or try these:
•
Hot cheese dip: To make a Southern twist on queso, just bake or microwave a small bowl of pimento cheese. If you want something more substantial, stir in cooked black-eyed peas first. Well, actually there is something “perfect-er”: Bojangles’, the nationally loved chicken and biscuits chain, has debuted pimento cheese on its signature Cajun Filet Biscuit. Pro tip: You can also add the pimento cheese on anything you order, like ham biscuits and Bo Rounds, the little hash brown bites. To find a location near you, go to Bojangles.com. AN AGING FAMILY MEMBER IS STRUGGLING WITH THEIR CHRONIC CONDITION
E
WHAT CAN YOU DO?
nsuring your aging parent or loved one is able to manage and afford their medical treatments can have an enormous impact on their health and quality of life. Dan Klein, president and CEO of the Patient Access Network (PAN) Foundation, the largest independent charitable organization dedicated to helping people pay their outof-pocket costs for prescribed treatments, offers five simple ways you can help an aging family member manage their treatment - so you can both live healthier and happier lives.
AS WE GET OLDER, THE ONES WE LOVE INEVITABLY AGE TOO. FOR MANY, THERE COMES A TIME WHERE YOU ARE NO LONGER JUST A SON, DAUGHTER OR FAMILY MEMBER - YOU’RE A CAREGIVER. about their needs and concerns, make a list of the medications they are taking and the renewals they may need and determine together

what you’d like to accomplish. If drug costs are a financial burden, don’t be shy about asking for samples or if there are less expensive generic equivalents available.
2Check in with the pharmacist.
Connecting with your parent or family member’s pharmacist is an excellent way to become familiar with their treatment plan and ask questions about potential side effects and interactions of prescribed drugs. Be sure to ask about mail order options offered by some insurance plans and specialty pharmacies, which can save money and time by delivering a three-month

supply of medication directly to their home.
3
De-clutter the medicine cabinet. It is common for those struggling with chronic or multiple illnesses, particularly in old age, to have multiple prescriptions from different healthcare providers, each with complicated regimens that may make it difficult to keep track of what pills to take and when. You can help by ensuring their medicines are organized, accessible and stored appropriately. Auditing their medicine cabinet is a good place to start. Make note of anything that is running low and order refills where needed. You can visit fda.gov for information on how to appropriately dispose of medications
that have expired or are no longer necessary. A pill organizer box can help keep track of complicated treatment schedules and reduce the risk of missing a dose or doses. Free pill reminder apps, such as Medisafe Pill & Med Reminder, allow you to manage the accounts of multiple family members.
4
Review Medicare or insurance coverage. Diagnoses and treatments can frequently change and it’s therefore important to ensure your parent or family member’s Medicare or insurance plan still meets their needs. It is worth paying particular attention to their prescription drug plan, which can differ year to year. Online tools, like The National Council on Aging’s Benefits Checkup Tool and Medicare Interacti-
ve sponsored by the Medicare Rights Center can help you review benefits and find the best option for them. They may also be eligible for other Medicare programs - like a LowIncome Subsidy - that can lower out-of-pocket costs.

Find out if charitable financial assistance is available. The PAN Foundation is one of several charities that provides financial assistance for out-of-pocket costs. You can learn more about patient assistance charities at panfoundation.org. You can also download FundFinder, a free app developed by the PAN Foundation that notifies you when assistance becomes available from any of the major charitable patient assistance foundations. EMBARRASSING QUESTIONS YOU’RE TOO AFRAID TO ASK
YOUR GYNECOLOGIST
Y
ou know, like that unpleasant odor and itch after sex or your period? Believe it or not, spilling the beans to your doctor can calm your fears and get your problems treated. In fact, if something serious is going on, early diagnosis is critical. A survey of 391 women conducted by the Women’s Sexual Health Foundation found that 72% of respondents are uncomfortable talking to their gyno about “the sexy stuff,” and 73% would rather die than ask the doc, “What’s up.” “Many women do not realize the vagina is a delicate ecosystem that requires a balanced environment to remain healthy; and everyday events like menstruation, sex and hormonal changes can throw off that balance. The result can be an embarrassing odor and discomfort,” says Lakeisha Richardson, MD, OB/GYN at Delta Medical Group Women’s Healthcare Clinic in Greenville, MS. “But, the solution to maintaining a healthy pH balance “down there” is as simple as a trip to the drug store. Healthy pH (the vagina’s acidity level) and beneficial lactobacillus are the keys to reducing the risk of

vaginal issues. A vaginal pH of 3.5 to 4.5 indicates that there is a perfect amount of good bacteria (lactobacilli) and no overgrowth of the bad bacteria that can cause odor and irritation. An elevated pH means that the healthy flora of the vagina may struggle to survive, while harmful bacteria can thrive.” Here are a few of the most common questions:
1
Sometimes I have an odor the morning after sex. Why does it happen and what can I do? Don’t worry — you aren’t dirty and washing with perfumed soap or douching won’t help — it will only make it worse. This happens because your vaginal pH has been thrown out of balance. Think of your vagina as a delicate ecosystem that needs to be maintained at a pH of 3.5 to 4.5. The pH of semen has a pH of 7.1 to 8, so, when introduced to the vagina, an odor or itch can occur, usually the morning after having sex. Lots of women douche to feel clean and fresh but water has a pH of 7. While it might make you feel fresh for a short time it won’t solve the problem. Here’s what you can do: Over the counter, RepHresh Gel has been clinically shown to restore normal vaginal pH and eliminate odor without a prescription as it bonds to the vaginal walls and provides long-lasting support for up to three full days. Avoid douching unless you balance pH afterward. Try RepHresh Clean Balance. Don’t use feminine products that contain deodorants or scented soaps
•
• •
2I have a lot of discharge and
irritation, but over-the-counter yeast medications don’t work. What should I do? Less than one-third of women who think they have a yeast infection actually do. Two thirds instead suffer from bacterial vaginosis (BV), a proliferation of “bad“ bacteria, often caused by an unbalanced vaginal
pH. If you aren’t sure whether your symptoms indicate BV or a yeast infection, see your doctor before you apply any over-the-counter treatment. Once BV is diagnosed, a course of antibiotics is required to eliminate the symptoms. Recurrence rates are very high. The best way to prevent recurrent BV is to maintain a normal vaginal pH and keep yeast and bacteria balanced every day. RepHresh Pro-B contains the strains of probiotics that specifically promote vaginal health to balance yeast and bacteria every day. Pro-B contains Lactobacillus rhamnosus GR-1 and Lactobacillus reuteri RC-14, two clinically documented probiotic lactobacilli specifically optimized for vaginal health as opposed to a probiotic or yogurt that supports immunity or digestion.
3Is there anything I can use
when I’m traveling or at the office for immediate relief? RepHresh Cooling Relief Vaginal Anti-Itch Spray is for relief of odor and itch, on the go. The unscented 2-in-1 spray contains hydrocortisone, the No. 1 doctor-recommended anti-itch ingredient, and has a portable design that sprays in any orientation, even upside-down for ease of use any time. Going to the gyno may not be top of the list, but it should be right up there. If you are nervous about the exam take your notes and questions in with you so you don’t forget. Talking about your anxieties can make the rest of the appointment a piece of cake. (BPT). l

Do you have unused prescription opioids in your home? Keeping unused prescription opioids is risky and can result in overdose and death in children, teens, and even pets.
QUICK TIPS FOR KEEPING UNUSED MEDICINE AWAY FROM CHILDREN AND TEENS.
More than 100 Americans die every day from overdoses involving opioids, and millions are addicted to opioids. The Remove the Risk campaign from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) provides easyto-follow steps that any adult can take to immediately remove unused prescription opioids from their homes and help save lives. them. Research shows that even child-resistant containers cannot prevent a child from taking medicines not meant for them. Prevent potential misuse by removing unused opioids from your home, especially if children or teens live with or visit you. What can you do right now? You can protect your family and be part of the solution to the opioid crisis. Go through your medicine cabinets and drawers – anywhere you keep unused opioid pills, patches, or syrups. Dispose of them safely by visiting www.FDA.gov/DrugDisposal to find answers to these questions:
1
Is a medicine take-back option readily available? Medicine takeback options are the preferred way to dispose of most types of unneeded medicines safely, including opioids. Authorized locations may be in retail pharmacies, hospital or clinic pharmacies, and law enforcement facilities. Some authorized collection sites may also offer mail-back programs or “drop-boxes” to help people safely dispose of their unused medicines.
2If not, is the medicine on the
FDA “flush list”? The FDA flush list tells you which medicines you should flush when they are no longer needed. Medicines on this flush list may be especially harmful and, in some cases, fatal with just one dose if they are used by someone other than the person for whom they were prescribed.
3Can you throw it away in house-
hold trash? If no medicine take-back option is available, and the medication is not on the FDA flush list, you can: Mix medicines with an unappealing substance such as dirt, cat litter, or used coffee grounds; Place the mixture in a container such as a sealed plastic bag; Throw away the container in your trash at home; and Remove all personal information on the prescription label of empty medicine bottles or medicine packaging, then trash or recycle the empty bottle or packaging. LACK OF PET-FRIENDLY DOMESTIC VIOLENCE SHELTERS CRITICAL BARRIER FOR AN ESTIMATED 1 IN 3 WOMEN VICTIMS AND 1 IN 4 MEN WILL EXPERIENCE SOME FORM OF DOMESTIC WITH PETS ABUSE IN THEIR LIFETIME.
72
FLUENTIAL SEPTEMBER / OCTOBER 2019
E
scaping abusive situations and starting over in a new and safe environment is an overwhelming experience for victims, especially when pets are involved. An added challenge is that very few (approximately 10 percent) domestic violence shelters in the U.S. currently accept and house pets. This leaves abuse victims with a difficult decision — flee to safety but leave their pet behind or stay with their abuser? Almost half of domestic violence victims choose to stay in an abusive situation out of fear of what might happen to their pet if they leave. As those who live with pets can attest, pets do so much for their humans — they provide unconditional love and comfort, they demonstrate loyalty and devotion, and they teach people about care and compassion. Pets can also sense when their owners experience sadness or pain, and their physical presence can provide comfort and promote healing. In essence, pets and people are better together. That’s why Purina has partnered with RedRover, a national nonprofit organization that helps people and animals in crisis situations, to create the Purple Leash Project. The Purple Leash Project not only raises awareness about this issue, but the program also helps provide funding and resources necessary to help more domestic violence shelters become safe, healing spaces for pets and people.

A Ms. Olympia at over the age of 50, Sheryl clearly knows what it takes to realize over-and-above achievement both in life and in business. Her secret sauce? Sheryl taps into a trifecta of neurotraining, physical fitness, and increased productivity to unlock personal ambition, revenue potential and self-confidence. Sheryl urges that success-minded people must aspire to be F.I.T., heavily leaning on “Faith, Intuition, and Tenacity” to reach their goals. “F.I.T. cultivates your inner ability to push through any of life's perceived obstacles, break through barriers, and manifest your heart’s dreams and desires,” Sheryl explains. “Whether you seek a job promotion, new business endeavor or a healthier body, F.I.T. helps establish a mindset and emotional framework that will nurture, uplift and inspire these and other areas of your life.”

FLUENTIAL SEPTEMBER / OCTOBER 2019
A key area of Sheryl’s various F.I.T. presentations and webinars is a focus on developing mental strength through neuro-training, whereby she offers a variety of tactical techniques related thereto. With this having piqued my curiosity, I recently connected with Sheryl for insight on some of her mind-bolstering methodologies that, as Sheryl explains, can help us cultivate a greater awareness of who we are, develop a road map of where we need and want to go, and conceptualize how we intend to get there: 1. Start A Dialogue With Yourself. Begin by asking yourself some basic questions: Who are you? What are you good at? What do people you care about see in
influential-magazine.com
you? When have you felt the most alive? What can you learn from others who have a strong purpose and who are inspirational to you? Such self-awareness fosters drive, confidence, and self-esteem that can transform you into an unstoppable force, — giving you the strength to persist...even through failure and adversity. You’ll likely be happier, too, and an inspiration to those around you. 2. Identify ALL Your Inner Strengths. When people are living in their “sweet spot,” they are more productive and naturally add value to the world around them. Accordingly, this “mode” is when people also tend to make more money. What are the things you’ve always been good at? What motivates and inspires you? Perhaps it’s things that come naturally to you, to the point you wonder why others struggle in the same area? While passion can also certainly blossom from areas in which you aren’t naturally talented, Sheryl’s personal and professional experiences have shown we rarely aspire toward ambitions for which we have no natural talent to achieve. As civil rights leader Howard Thurman once wrote, “Don't ask yourself what the world needs; ask yourself what makes you come alive, then go do that. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive.” Indeed they do. 3. Know Where You Add Value. Doing work you’re good at, but which holds no passion for you, is not a pathway to fulfilment. When we know our greatest strengths and where we as individuals can add the most value, we can better focus on the opportunities, roles and career paths in areas where success will likely occur. These are usually the same areas where
a person finds the greatest sense of accomplishment and contribution. All too often we undervalue our strengths, skills, and the expertise we naturally acquire over time. A great way to discover this for ourselves is to discern what we’re equipped to help solve in the workplace, career, organization or industry. Also, uncovering what problems we enjoy solving, and what problems we feel passionate about attempting to solve. The answers to these questions can help people focus and develop a much clearer series of intentions that are based on natural strengths and those things one is innately good at rather than trying to bolster or eliminate weaknesses. Through overcoming personal challenges in multiple areas in her life helped by employing the strategies above, Sheryl says she quickly learned that her biggest difficulty was not the obstacles in front of her, but rather the lack of belief and trust in herself. By her shifting from a focus on fear and limitations to a focus on empowerment fueled by faith, intuition, and tenacity (F.I.T.), she reached greater heights than ever before...and continues to do so. In summarizing the above, Sheryl also conveyed her belief that, ultimately, unlocking one’s inner presence makes leaders the best businesspeople and human beings they can be. Sheryl suffered in her own life until she established, and wholeheartedly practiced, her F.I.T. philosophy. In doing so, she not only realized extreme changes but also actually enjoyed the process and the people around her enjoyed her more as welI. I, for one, will certainly relish my own journey striving to get F.I.T. l

espite all the evidence that shows the benefits of an involved father, whether children live with their fathers or not, 63% of fathers say they spend too little time with their kids. How can you spend more meaningful time with your children? Here are some simple ideas from the National Responsible Fatherhood Clearinghouse and the Ad Council that can help you make a moment with your children:
1
Read to your children. A bedtime story is a meaningful bonding activity that is not only fun and comforting for children, but dramatically increases their ability and interest in reading over the years. Even children who can read chapter books on their own still enjoy being read to. For older children, take turns reading chapters or pages aloud to each other, and enjoy making up funny voices for the characters.
2Stay connected.
Whether you have long workdays, travel frequently, or if you live apart, find ways to stay connected when you’re unable to see your child in person. Text often, video chat or call. Find creative ways to connect, like playing an online game together. Lastly, don’t forget the power of something you can hold in your hand — send an occasional handwritten letter or postcard your child can treasure, even if you just live across town.
3Use errands
as an opportunity to bond. Fathers are less likely to take children to necessary appointments, such as dental and medical checkups. Making the effort to be the comforting presence during a possibly stressful appointment can really strengthen the bond with your child. You can also enjoy making conversation while you’re going to and from appointments. Other types of necessary errands to share include going for a haircut together or going to soccer practice. All these crucial activities are ways to strengthen that connection with your child.
4Be a positive role model.
Share something you love to do or care about with your children. Introduce them to a hobby you enjoy, take them to a park or other location you have an attachment to and share your memories with them. Volunteer together for a cause that’s important to you. Show your children what you are passionate about in life, and they will learn a
lot about you. They’ll also feel more comfortable sharing what they love and care about with you.
5Dance like a dad.
Let yourself play and be silly together sometimes. Turn on your child’s favorite upbeat music and #DanceLikeADad with your kids. Teach your kids your favorite dance moves and let them show off their own. “Fathers are important to their children's lives and well-being. Research shows children who feel close to their fathers do better in school and show higher self-esteem and empathy. Whether you live with your children or not, it's the time you spend together and the memories you create that have made the biggest difference,” adds Kenneth Braswell, Project Director for the National Responsible Fatherhood Clearinghouse and Chief Executive Officer for Fathers Incorporated. Let kids choose their activities These days the choices for classes and activities can be overwhelming, so pick a reasonable number of choices for your children, but make sure they represent a variety of interests, from the arts, science and math, sports, and more — and let them choose what interests them the most. If you need to narrow down their choices,

take your kids to a library or bookstore, explain where to find what types of books, and see what they gravitate toward. What kinds of books intrigue them? This will keep the choices to a manageable level. Then allow your children to sample from the pursuits that interest them and see what sticks.
2Encourage kids to follow their
interests — wherever they go Once your kids express an interest in something, encourage the pursuit, even if it's something you didn't expect. Your children may choose an interest that doesn’t easily lend itself to after-school clubs or classes in your area. So how can you help them? Encourage their curiosity. Help them find kid-friendly books and websites on the subjects they like. Do an internet search for local resources or ask friends to help you find a trustworthy adult they can shadow to learn about a related career or hobby. Learn about the topic yourself, so you can help your children explore it further.
3Help kids express themselves
through their room decor Next time their bedroom needs a refresh, let children help pick out
the color and design scheme — within reason. Allowing children to choose pictures to display or to arrange a shelf of treasures and knickknacks also lets them express their interests and personal style. The upside? They may be more likely to keep a room clean if they helped to decorate it!
4
Allow kids to pick their own clothing styles There’s no better way to help children express their own personal style than allowing them choices about what they wear. Within an acceptable budget — which can also be a learning experience — go to your favorite store and let your children choose some of their clothing, within guidelines you set ahead of time (such as needing a certain number of shirts or pants for school days). Again, if the options are overwhelming, limit them, but still allow a choice. Ask, “Which one of these three shirts do you like best?” Shopping for kid-focused clothing brands like OshKosh B’gosh means you know that whatever they choose will be a perfect balance of quality, value, fashion and kid-friendly style.
5
Support kids in their efforts to help others The internet is full of stories about kids who love to help others, from a lemonade stand raising funds for a good cause to kids doing good deeds to help out a neighbor or friend. Kids love to make a difference, and you can support their efforts as well as acting as a role model by making a difference, too. Since 2014, parents have helped the OshKosh Jeanius Campaign raise $2.1 million to help kids and classrooms, via DonorsChoose.org and Delivering Good. Through Sept. 19, you can buy an extra pair of jeans in-store or make a cash donation instore or online, and OshKosh B’gosh will match each pair of denim with an article of clothing and will match all cash donations up to $50,000. t’s no surprise then that the market for essential oils is anticipated to grow significantly (more than 9 percent) over the next several years, according to Grand View Research. More households are catching onto the fact these beneficial plant-based ingredients have a range of cleaning and home care uses. To get in on the trend, consider these cool home care uses for essential oils:
1Wipe Surfaces: Creating your
own cleaning supplies can make chores a little easier on the eyes, nose and throat. The good news is that certain essential oils, like tea tree and lemon oil can help fight dirt and grime, as well as kill bacteria and viruses, making them an excellent addition to homemade cleaning solutions and wipes.

Banish Bugs: Most traditional home insecticide products use the same active ingredients initially developed almost 50 years ago. Interestingly, the right mix of essential oils can also be highly lethal to bugs. Familiar ingredients such as lemongrass oil and geraniol in Zevo Instant Action Sprays target nerve receptors active only in insects, not people or pets. “Zevo bug sprays are effective because they target insects’ unique biology with a blend of effective essential oils, setting them apart from traditional insecticide sprays,”

Fridge Odors: Even if you regularly rid your fridge of old items and wipe down its surfaces, combatting fridge odor can be a losing battle, as the plastic components tend to absorb odors over time. Make that box of baking soda you have in your refrigerator work a bit harder. To go beyond simply neutralizing odors, add a few drops of essential lemon oil to it for a crisp, fresh scent.
4
Revive Fabrics: Take a natural approach to fresh-smelling fabrics. Create your own spray by combining baking soda, distilled water and a touch of your favorite essential oils. Use the formula on linens, upholsteries, window treatments or any other fabrics around your home in need of a scent boost.
5Create Calm: You don’t have to
do a full hygge-inspired renovation project to promote a peaceful atmosphere in your home’s spaces. With just a diffuser and such essential oils as lavender and bergamot, you can fill a room with a calming scent. For clean, healthy, bug-free spaces, consider introducing essential oils into your home’s supply kit. A small but mighty dose can go a long way. (StatePoint) l

OVERACHIEVEMENT, FROM PRIYANKA CHOPRA JONAS

THE DEFINITION OF AN OVERACHIEVER IS SOMEONE WHO GOES ABOVE AND BEYOND THEIR DAILY RESPONSIBILITIES TO MAKE A POSITIVE IMPACT ON THE WORLD.
sculptures and other crafts in order to provide aid for health, education and food programs in Haiti following the 2010 earthquake. This year, Priyanka has joined Pilot Pen to help select and award the G2 Overachievers $100,000 grant -- double the amount of last year’s grant -- to someone who goes above and beyond his or her 9-to-5 role to make the world a better place. She will also help select and award the winners of the 2018 $50,000 G2 Overachievers Grant and $15,000 G2 Overachievers Student Grant.
C
Have the Right Tools: What are your goals? What issues matter most to you? Overachievers know it’s helpful to jot down thoughts, ideas and solutions. As Priyanka says: “I have to have a pen in my hand when I think.” The written word is powerful and capturing ideas as they arise makes them more tangible -- just be prepared for them to strike at any time and have great tools on hand, like Priyanka’s favorite, the Pilot G2 gel ink pen.
l
elebrated actor, author, and humanitarian Priyanka Chopra Jonas is a true overachiever. As the new G2 Overachievers spokesperson, she is sharing tips for discovering the overachiever in all of us:
Think Bigger: Look for simple ways to maximize the impact of your everyday activities. When donating to charity, investigate matching programs to make your dollar go further. Planning to volunteer at a food pantry? First, talk to staff to determine what days of the week you’re needed most. Picking up groceries for dinner? Ask an elderly neighbor what he or she needs from the store. With a little planning, seemingly small tasks can have a big impact. l
Whether writing down goals or creating a business plan, G2 is America’s number one selling pen and a preferred pen of overachievers everywhere. Recognize Unsung Heroes: You may know overachievers from your job, school or neighborhood, making positive changes, big and small. Make sure they know their work matters. “So much of philanthropy is a thankless job,” Priyanka shares. “Most people who do it don’t expect much back.” Celebrate these good works and encourage an overachiever’s mission by nominating them for next year’s G2 Overachievers Grant or Student Grant, which is now officially open for submissions. To learn more or submit a hand- written nomination for yourself or someone you admire, visit G2Overachievers.com.
l
l Lead by Example: For Priyanka, the goal is to “inspire
the next generation of children to be more kind and more compassionate.” For the past several years, Pilot Pen has recognized exceptionally inspiring individuals through the annual G2 Overachievers Grant, which is designed to enhance the reach of unique and impactful individuals and their projects. Previous honorees include Jacqueline Norvell, a full-time legal secretary, single mother and founder of Brown Bag Lady, a Los Angeles-based nonprofit dedicated to providing meals, resources and compassion to the city’s homeless. Previous Student Grant winner, Erin Manuel, has raised over $16,000 since the age of 7, selling hand-crafted bookmarks,

Overachievers can come from all backgrounds and all ages. With courage, perseverance, and the right tools, anyone with a vision can make a positive impact on the world. (StatePoint) l SEPTEMBER / OCTOBER 2019

PERSONAL FINANCE: HOW CREDIT AND DEBIT CARDS FLAG FRAUD BEFORE IT HAPPENS

ou have no idea this is happening, until you get a phone call from your bank or an alert from your mobile banking app. How did they know to flag these specific transactions as fraud instead of other things you have purchased? Artificial intelligence is at the heart of this process.
How you stay protected while shopping A sophisticated anti-fraud detection system, known as Visa Advanced Authorization, uses artificial intelligence to look for possible fraud every time you insert, tap, touch or click to make a payment. It doesn’t know your name or exactly what you’ve purchased but sees activities and patterns to learn what typical purchase behavior looks like. How well does this work? Advanced Authorization analyzed more than 124 billion transactions and prevented an estimated $23 billion in fraud in 2018 alone. That's no small feat considering there are more than 3.3 billion Visa cards
available worldwide that can be used at nearly 54 million stores. The moment you pay at a store in person or online, the artificial intelligence gathers hundreds of pieces of information about the transaction, analyzing more than 500 unique factors that may indicate fraud. Some of the information analyzed includes: Has the account been used at this store before? What type of transaction is it — in-app, contactless, chip or magnetic stripe? l Is the spending pattern out of the ordinary for the account? l If a purchase is being made in person, is the location of the store unreasonably far from the location of a recent in-store purchase? l l
In about a millisecond, this information is assessed, and fraud is rated on a scale of 1 to 99. The higher the number, the riskier the transaction. The risk score is then sent to the cardholder’s financial institution, where the decision is made to either approve or decline the transaction. Some people may long for the days when life was simpler and more analog. However, artificial intelligence is having a big impact in the effort to prevent credit and debit card fraud and is becoming more sophisticated every day. It’s fast, accurate and efficient, but also enables highly intelligent predictive analytics to help identify and prevent fraud before it can happen. For many, this is yet another example of technology continuing to play a larger role in our lives — perhaps this time for the better. (BPT) l

he collection has since been featured at Barneys Madison Avenue Trunk Show, alongside designers such as Zac Posen, Naeem Khan, J. Mendel, as well as at the Daytime Emmy’s ceremony. It has been featured by Vogue Italia, Harper’s Baazar, and more. Several celebrities have worn Radmila Lolly collection such as Gayle King, Bebe Rexha, Mya, Miss Universe 2018, Miss USA 2018, and Miss USA 2017, to name a few. Radmila not only sings and designs, but this talented artist has upcoming ventures which include a novel that corresponds to her next self-composed album and high couture collection. Radmila’s mom is a Russian painter, which is where she learned her design sketching skills; growing up she thought she would be an artist too and had Sunday art sessions. Her grandmother was a seamstress who passed that knowledge along to her mother, who subsequently taught her. She started by making clothes for her Barbies and other dolls. By the time she was 18, she was sewing and designing her own clothes. The combination of the art and sewing knowledge enable Radmila to create her haute couture. The largest influence on her designs are her musical exploits. For Radmila, her two artistic mediums inspire and feed off each other; the textures of her designs are innately linked to the textures of her music.
The type of person I envision wearing my designs is, someone who is a leader, who is bold, and who appreciates fashion as an art form. I love dressing artists of all kinds, including musicians, visual artists, and actors. I’m especially interested in costume design for movies and would love to do more work in that arena.
Radmila formally appeared on the music scene with a triumphant debut album IV Stories at the Standard Hotel Op.6 with the avant-garde, electro-acoustic “Scorchio” string quartet which she premiered during an exclusive gala concert at Carnegie Hall. This gala was attended by the likes of Grammywinner, Maxwell. Radmila followed up the album with an eclectic mix of singles which showcases her range and

Follow Radmila on her Instagram page at @Radmilalolly to keep up with her work and life. We invite you into our conversation with Radmila. InFluential Magazine: What fashion advice would you give to women? Radmila Lolly: I’d advise women to be unique and express themselves through their clothing. Clothing is like a language; it gives you an opportunity to connect with people who find what you’re wearing interesting or have similar style and interests to yours. At the end of the day, people will always judge no matter what we do or wear, so you should wear something that shows who you are truthfully. My choice would be to purchase unique items which catch the eye and demonstrate who I am as a person. InFluential: What is something about you most noteworthy? Radmila: I believe my choice of dress is noteworthy. I'd would wear a gown all day, and sometimes I do.
InFluential: What celebrity would you like seeing wearing your designs? Radmila: The type of person I envision wearing my designs is, someone who's is a leader, who is bold, and who appreciates fashion as an art form. InFluential: When did you start singing? Radmila: As a young child, I'd always hear my mother singing songs she composed herself around the house, which sparked my own interest in music. However, her style of voice and mine were very different, and I wasn’t comfortable to just improvise like she was. That led me to begin my formal vocal training at age 14. InFluential: Where and when was your first performance? Radmila: My first performance was a private recital in London when I was 16 years old. That was my first experience performing for an audience and it was very difficult for me to get up on stage because I was so worried about everything that could go wrong. This included everything from “what if I forget the words to the song?” to “What if I slip and fall on my face in front of everyone?”. I understand now, there’s so many aspects to a live performance you have absolutely no control over, so there’s no point in worrying about them. All you can do is be as prepared as possible and go up on stage and enjoy yourself. The real skill to performing is making it past any mishaps without the audience even noticing. InFluential: You’re currently writing a book. What is it about? Radmila: The main subject is what happens to us as children can affect us for the rest of our lives. We can be scarred on the outside, but we can also be scarred on the inside. The novel is based upon the lives of four main characters with very different backgrounds; all their storylines eventually intertwine and converge by the end of the book. The book shows how seemingly small and insignificant actions can change the course of your life. InFluential: When is the scheduled release date of your book? Radmila: I'm thrilled to announce the release date and corresponding fashion collection are scheduled for May 2020. l SEPTEMBER / OCTOBER 2019

“First and foremost – it was a GREAT EVENT and yet another very successful milestone for the agency! We had a ballroom full of passionate guests who were very engaged, generous and totally connected to BBBS’ mission of helping children succeed,” said BBBS CEO Brent Fields. “Thanks to the generosity of our donors we raised enough funds this year to provide mentoring relationships for more than 600 children! That means this event has generated over $5 MILLION in its fifteen years of existence.”

The highlight of the evening was the presentation of the BBBS match story featuring Little Sister Brianna and her Big Sister Ashley. Brianna shared her difficult story of experiencing bullying and peer abuse. With the help of her Big Sister, she managed to overcome these challenges and to find joy and increased self-confidence. It is a story that exemplifies the impact BBBS’ mentoring program has on children, their families, and the agency’s volunteers. At the end of the evening, BBBS’ 2019 Ice Ball Gala Chairs, Lauren Petrowski and Justin Poses, were honored for their important roles in creating and hosting such an exceptional event. The celebration continued into the early morning hours with music, games, dancing, prizes, an open bar and networking at The BIG After, Ice Ball’s new official after-party.
It was a true gala experience as attendees enjoyed a signature ice sculpture, photo booths, hundreds of silent auction items, and two special Kendra Scott games featuring mystery gifts of gorgeous Kendra Scott jewelry. Also, part of the fun, was a raffle for a special Tito’s party bus trip. The band PDA kicked off the main portion of the evening as they led guests into the ballroom where they enjoyed a seated dinner and a live auction. Emcee Quita Culpepper, KVUE anchor, began the program, and auctioneer Heath Hale inspired the crowd to bid on many exceptional auction packages including a special trip to Havana, Cuba; a New York package featuring Broadway tickets, baseball tickets and fine dining experiences; a special stay in a palazzo in Tuscany; and a “bucket list” trip to a luxury chateau in Champagne, France.
