note from the F O U N D E R & P U B L I S H E R
P
ersonal grooming is like a home for sale; our image is what helps sell “us” in various aspects of our lives. Our resume may tell the story of a highly experienced and accomplished individual,
but if our appearances don't follow suit, we put ourselves at a disadvantage. We miss out on opportunities for advancement at work or fulfillment in our personal lives. Grooming doesn’t just refer to our personal appearances; grooming is in every facet of our lives, such as a manicured lawn or the way we care for our pets. How well we manage in these areas speak volumes about our character. Our appearances largely impact our lives because it’s the first, and sometimes only, impression people have of us. Choosing to ignore common personal grooming habits may indicate to those around us that we do not take pride in our work because Photo by Adam Moroz of Adam Moroz Photography
we don't take pride in our appearance. Even worse, potential employers may feel we should not be taken seriously. We’re pleased to share our take on these very topics and indulge on some ideas that work well for members of the InFluential team. I value the importance of good grooming and one can never be too learned to benefit from a few reminders. If you’ve got a few tricks up your sleeve, we’d love to hear them!
Sincerely,

t’s that time of year again. Spring has sprung. The birds are singing. The flowers are blooming. The grass is growing. The sky is blue. It’s the
time of year when we open our windows and doors to let in the fresh air and sunshine. When we do, that’s the very moment we realize everything is a bit dusty, drab, and disheveled from having hibernated through the winter.
What is one to do?
Some people call it Spring Cleaning. Here at InFluential we call it grooming. Grooming is something that everyone and everything needs. Whether your hair needs a trim or your furniture needs a dusting, it all needs maintenance. Photo by Jody Suarez
With the new season comes the
realization that our lawns need a good once over. Our workout routine needs a new move, or heck, even our pets need some extra special attention. With that, we present you The Art of Grooming Issue of InFluential. We don’t want to send you out there looking like a hayseed or feeling like one.
We have tips and tricks on
grooming your home, pet, job, and accessories. But finally, let's not forget the icing on the cake: yourself. It’s always good to start fresh and keep things in order. And, we here at InFluential are determined to make it easier for you to do. In this issue we are going to take the guesswork out of grooming.
We want to help you stay healthy, safe, clean, and
orderly. If all else, we hope you come away as a better or more informed person than you were when you started reading. Or if anything, we hope you come away with a flea-free dog and the spiffiest pair of shoes you’ve ever owned. Enjoy!

DON’T: •
Pick the hat up by the crown - You've seen it in old Hollywood movies, but handling your hat by pinching the crown is a sure way to ruin its shape and the integrity of the material.
•
Leave your hat in a hot car - heat and humidity can warp a hat.
•
Set your hat down on its brim - the brim is not a flat surface; leaving your hat this way will flatten it out over time.
•
Roll it up – hats will lose their form.
•
Wear it in a rainstorm - hats offer some protection from inclement weather, but few are made to survive it.
•
Loan it to a friend - the number one cause of irreparable hat damage.
DO: •
Handle your hat by the brim - The brim is a single plane of material, so you can't crush it between your fingers or crease it.
•
Set the hat down on its crown - Most hat crowns provide a better surface for the hat to sit on than the brim, and it lets the hat air out when you take it off. Plus, it'll encourage you to pick it back up by the brim!
•
Treat your hat like a fine pair of shoes - Don't wear the same one every day and take care of it when it's not on your head. A hat stand or hook will let it

get air circulation and maintains the hat shape while preventing mustiness and mold. •
Turn the sweatband inside when damp. Reversing a damp sweatband inside out will allow it to dry more evenly and using a hat retainer will help keep it from shrinking.
•
Brush or wipe off dust and lint regularly - it's much easier keep a hat clean if you prevent buildup. Brush the dust off a felt hat in a counter-clockwise motion or gently wipe the dust off of straw with a slightly damp cloth.
Prevention is the best medicine for hats, and a well-kept hat will age, not deteriorate.

gadgets and gizmos seem to come out on a daily basis. While many new products may address a very specific niche and
are adopted by the minority of consumers, a few things are consistent and stable technologies that are in high demand.
SMART TELEVISIONS A few years ago, a television was nothing more than a device used to connect to your cable box, game systems, VCR and DVD players. Today, it has the capability to stream dozens of both free and paid content directly over an internet connection. Much like a smart phone, these displays have applications that allow you to access music, videos and movies using an internet connection. Some can even connect to your network wirelessly. So with little more than a power outlet, you can access a nearly unlimited amount of ever-changing content without a bunch of additional boxes laying around.
SOUND-BARS Unfortunately, the speakers and amplifiers in modern televisions are severely lacking. If you want better sound without remodeling the whole room, a soundbar is an attractive option. A sound-bar is essentially a compact, self-contained, self-powered speaker system that houses multiple speakers and mounts near the television. While it won’t replicate the experience that a true surround system is capable of, it is a considerable and non-permanent improvement to what the TV alone can provide.

WHOLE HOME AUDIO One of the most in-demand setups is whole house audio, which is becoming more affordable with the widespread adoption of airplay and other wireless technologies. Some wireless systems utilize their own wireless network to communicate with your smart phone or tablet and stream just about any song on the planet around your home with crystal clear quality.
