Venessa Peña-Robichaux, MD Although washing your hair is important to keep it clean, daily shampooing can lead to drying out your hair and scalp. Allowing the natural oils of your scalp to hydrate your hair can be helpful in keeping your hair looking and feeling healthy. I recommend shampooing every two to three days and using a dry shampoo to remove excess oil on the scalp from time to time - this is much less drying than a washout shampoo. I use different dry shampoos, basically any that I find on sale. There is no particular brand I love since I always switch it up and try new ones.

A cloth dipped in cool water and placed at the pulse points (temples, wrists and neck) is incredibly soothing and can reduce the redness that comes with overheating and exercising in the heat. Another trick for feeling refreshed in the summer is keeping Cetaphil cleansing towelettes handy in my purse. They are quite gentle, and I like to be able to clean my skin before re-applying sunscreen.
Colby Evans, MD I’m a big fan of brimmed hats and aerosol or alcohol-based sunscreens. I tend not to care for the creamy feel of sunscreen lotions, so I tend to use alcohol-based sunscreens, like Solbar PF Sunscreen Liquid SPF 30, that have the consistency of hand sanitizer rather than lotion. These are also great for sports like golf and fishing, when you really don’t want your hands to be greasy. For patients, I find that the humidity of summer is a mixed bag. Some conditions, like eczema and psoriasis, tend to get better when the air contains more moisture. But it’s also common for patients to experience more discomfort due to chafing. If you are prone to chafing, it can be helpful to dry the skin completely after bathing (for example, with a hair dryer set on cool) and also consider applying over-the-counter Zeasorb AF powder. The best way to manage summer skin, hair, or nail care is of course to discuss any questions or concerns with a dermatologist.

Tasting Lemonade Contest. The event, hosted by Lemonade Day Austin, a program of the Entrepreneurs Foundation of Central Texas (EF), was held at the Thinkery, Austin’s children’s museum. Participants put their skills to the test and competed for the title of best lemonade in a variety of categories including Best Tasting , Most Innovative, Best Presentation and Best Customer Service. A panel of distinguished local celebrities provided their expertise in selecting the winners for each category.
