Chief of InFluential Magazine, I wanted to share my absolute joy in joining a team of brilliant and diverse individuals that are able to bring to you the stories from all

Austin’s cultural scene came alive in its pages, bringing to me in Columbus a city flourishing 1,200 miles away. Ohio winters, bitter from the cold blow of the polar vortex, were tempered with each turn of the page that brought me a world away. Why Being a Great Leader is Important: Described by his staff as a passionate and caring manager who puts people first, Robert credits the mentoring from his father as the foundation to his capabilities as a leader. “Being a great leader and developing a high performance team means I demonstrate I care for them; not only their work, but other aspects of their well-being,” Watson says. “An effective leader can inspire a group of people to treat one another with Care, Value and Respect - the core values of Hilton - which translates into highly successful teams. That’s who I strive to be and what I strive to do, everyday.” On Excellence in Customer Service: Being polite, attentive to customer needs, and going the extra mile to ensure their needs are met – these are the attributes that demonstrate excellent customer service to Watson. At Hilton Austin, excellence starts with “Blue Energy”, Watson says. "in other words ""Blue Energy" is our culture, and it celebrates the passion and commitment our Team Members have for creating outstanding Customer Service Experiences.” Why Community Service is Important: Watson learned from his father that “one of the greatest gifts you can have is to pay it forward”. Watson “adopted” Travis High School in Austin, and worked tirelessly with the corporate management of Hilton Austin to develop a scholarship program for deserving students. Watson challenges his team to look for opportunities to give back to the community - a philanthropic spirit for which the Hilton Austin is recognized. 16

Lemonade Day Austin, one of the youth programs at the Entrepreneurs Foundation, is beneficial to all kids, regardless of their desired career. SUMMER SUN

SECRETS FROM THE EXPERTS he skin is our largest and most visible organ, and is often a reflection of how healthy

T

we are on the inside. Generally speaking, more of our skin becomes exposed to the sun during the summer months due to a shift to cooler clothing options and an increase in outdoor activities. The team at Evans Dermatology Partners in Austin, Texas shares their own personal secrets for keeping your skin and hair healthy and

sun safe this summer.

Venessa Peña-Robichaux, MD Although washing your hair is important to keep it clean, daily shampooing can lead to drying out your hair and scalp. Allowing the natural oils of your scalp to hydrate your hair can be helpful in keeping your hair looking and feeling healthy. I recommend shampooing every two to three days and using a dry shampoo to remove excess oil on the scalp from time to time - this is much less drying than a washout shampoo. I use different dry shampoos, basically any that I find on sale. There is no particular brand I love since I always switch it up and try new ones.

Amy McClung, MD I have three small children, so I worry a lot about keeping them safe in the sun. Recently, I’ve been very excited about the Babiator kid’s sunglasses. They’re more comfortable than other brands I’ve tried and my kids actually keep them on. And the best part is that they come with a fabulous guarantee – if they get lost or broken within one year of purchase, Babiator will replace them for free!

Donna Adam, RN Donna Adam, RN joined Evans Dermatology in January 2007. She is passionate about skin cancer prevention and treatment. She supervises the Evans Dermatology medical assistant team, and helps to coordinate patient care. People are often surprised by how effective cool compresses can be at reducing flushing. A cloth dipped in cool water and placed at the pulse points (temples, wrists and neck) is incredibly soothing and can reduce the redness that comes with overheating and exercising in the heat. Another trick for feeling refreshed in the summer is keeping Cetaphil cleansing towelettes handy in my purse. They are quite gentle, and I like to be able to clean my skin before re-applying sunscreen.

Colby Evans, MD I’m a big fan of brimmed hats and aerosol or alcohol-based sunscreens. I tend not to care for the creamy feel of sunscreen lotions, so I tend to use alcohol-based sunscreens, like Solbar PF Sunscreen Liquid SPF 30, that have the consistency of hand sanitizer rather than lotion. These are also great for sports like golf and fishing, when you really don’t want your hands to be greasy. For patients, I find that the humidity of summer is a mixed bag. Some conditions, like eczema and psoriasis, tend to get better when the air contains more moisture. But it’s also common for patients to experience more discomfort due to chafing. If you are prone to chafing, it can be helpful to dry the skin completely after bathing (for example, with a hair dryer set on cool) and also consider applying over-the-counter Zeasorb AF powder. The best way to manage summer skin, hair, or nail care is of course to discuss any questions or concerns with a dermatologist.

huck Aksland is a name known for the many influential roles he has held in the racing industry, including being a successful pilot. Aksland is also largely remembered in Austin as one of the main players when the Circuit of The Americas motor racing circuit was initially developed. Aksland served as VP of Motor Sports Operations and withstood major heat when it came to the city’s early opinions of the Grand Prix

She says, “I remember being a little kid with my nose practically pressed against the television screen watching the 11 o'clock news. Reporting the news would be my passion.” The advice she tells people pursuing their dreams may seem simple, but is critical to being happy in what you do. “Find something within your soul which speaks to you,” she imparts. “When you find that passion, you will come alive. Never give up.” The Thrill of Journalism: Possessing an inquisitive personality and the charm of a natural born storyteller, journalism was the obvious fit for Culpupper. Most thrilling about journalism is the opportunity to deliver important information to viewers in an honest, thorough and unbiased manner. W E A R A B L E SPRING TRENDS WRITTEN BY L A U R E L K I N N E Y

he shift from winter to spring can be such a refreshing time of year. Change is in the air, and it

T

is time once again to get out and be social after a long winter of bundling up and hibernating. Spring also means cleaning out the old and introducing some shiny newness into your life, and your wardrobe should be no exception. Fashion can be overwhelming, and it’s often a challenge to sift through the plethora of youth-centric trends to find something new and modern that can

work for everyday life. To help you on your way towards freshening up your look for spring, I’ve collected several ultra-wearable pieces you can add to your wardrobe without sacrificing your personal style and comfort.

The Modern White Shirt One of the most classic clothing items is back with a vengeance this year. The modern white blouse is a little edgier and has more going on than your classic darted button-up. Some are boxy and cropped, while others have one characteristic that’s blown out of proportion - think oversized breast pockets or wide sleeves. Curvy women can find V-neck versions that have a wrap or belted waist, and petite women look great in the cropped-tothe-waist styles. Wear your offbeat white shirts over jeans for a put-together casual look or tuck one into a high-waisted skirt to look effortlessly polished. There is no need to hide this shirt under a blazer anymore! Photography courtesy of the chicstreetjournal.com »

The Cut Out Shoe One of the easiest ways to rejuvenate your footwear while transitioning from winter to spring is to add a pair of cut out shoes to the mix. This stylish shoe is incredibly versatile because you can find a cut out version of any type of shoe and select one according to your personal style. The open-toed ankle boot is a great way to add some edge to your summer dresses and skirts without the heaviness of a boot. Keep in mind that choosing a soft neutraltoned option won’t create too much contrast if your legs are on the paler side. Flat-lovers will find great two-toned or perforated d’Orsay flats, slip-on sneakers, or cute cut out oxford options. Luckily, the comfortable shoe trend is still going strong and cut outs keep the style fresh. Photography courtesy of freepeople.com

»

The Structured Light Layer Since it will surely be hot before we know it, it’s wise to invest in pieces that can carry you through the warmer months. Find a light layer that meshes with your current wardrobe and can be worn in several different ways – it’s a surefire way to stay modern without sacrificing your personal style. Preppy ladies will find it easy to style the short-sleeved cargo or military-inspired vests that are popping up now. A long, sleek blazer-like vest will take your jeans, trousers or pencil skirts up a notch, and can be worn over any sleeve length as the weather changes. Staying modern and on-trend doesn’t have to feel overwhelming. Selecting new pieces that go well with your pre-existing style will keep you from looking like you’re trying too hard and bring some spring to your stylish step! Though wing joints were abundant in many parts of the South, it became clear to Greenberg and Paul that something was missing in Austin – something they would soon

D E N N I S VA N PA S T R Y C H E F | D I S T R I C T K I T C H E N & C O C K TA I L S | A U S T I N , T E X A S Who He Is: A young and talented pastry chef who graduated with honors from Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts in Austin, where he majored in pastry and baking. Recognized as having all the pedigree of a top pastry chef, the 21-year-old was selected by Amir Hajimaleki, executive chef and owner of District Kitchen & Cocktails to oversee their pastry program. Why Success Is The Best Show & Tell: Growing up the middle child in a traditional Vietnamese household where his career choice wasn’t praised easily, Van had to demonstrate he was making the right career choice. “I often needed an outlet. This was the catalyst to my interest in the world of pastry and baking.” While still in high school, Van started A Fond Ant Cakes, offering cakes for special occasions right out of his home kitchen. The Value of Mentoring: Upon graduation, Van completed an apprenticeship at the award-winning Uchi in Austin. “The team at Uchi has had a profound influence on me and the manner in which I approach my craft. They have such a stellar way of working. I couldn’t have asked for a better apprenticeship opportunity.” No matter your goals, Van stresses the value of having a great mentor to set you up on the road to success. What Gives The Greatest Thrills: “Because I value my family so much, I really wanted to show them what I can create. So I followed my passion and ran with it. Now that I’ve had several years to hone my craft, the greatest satisfaction comes from seeing the faces of people enjoying my desserts.” Future Aspirations: Van would like to grow with District, overseeing the pastry programs of multiple locations. Eventually, he would like to own and operate his own bakery, creating everything from pastries to wedding cakes. “The face of a bride when she sees a cake I’ve created is a reward all in itself.”

ccording to a 2014 study, Austin is ranked as the fourth-best city for singles in the U.S. So, if you are single in our city, you are not alone. But it seems, in our Someone + 1 culture, if you are single and not married, or at least in a committed relationship, then you are sentenced to wear the scarlet letter “A” for Alone.

WEEKEND GETAWAY TIPS FOR BUSY PROFESSIONALS W R I T T E N B Y M A R I A O R O Z O VA

As President & Creative Director of The MOD Studio, I’ve learned a thing or two about time management, and it definitely comes in handy when trying to squeeze in a quick weekend getaway. I rarely use the ‘no time’ excuse to take a couple of days away and recharge (while not totally unplugging). Time is always scarce but that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy a quick vacation between client meetings and business obligations. Here are some tips for all you busy professionals out there on how to use every second of vacation time you have to the fullest.

You get free travel miles, hotel stays and other travel benefits (free presidential suite upgrade, anyone?) just by spending money you were already planning to spend. Two of my preferred cards are AAdvantage Platinum and Starwood Prefered Guest.
