Living The InFluential Life With
Austin Proper Hotel And Residences
T
he Austin Proper Hotel and Residences will be a 32-story mixeduse building containing 99 for-sale residences, 244 hotel guest rooms, four food and beverage outlets, 11,500 square feet of meeting space, a state-of-the-art spa, a fitness center and two outdoor swimming pools. The LEED® Goldregistered modern high-rise by award-winning Handel Architects is slated to break ground in spring 2016 and open in early 2018. “We are excited to have acquired the land for the Austin Proper Hotel and Residences. The City of Austin’s original vision combined with Trammell Crow Company’s leadership as master developer of Green Water have created a neighborhood of vibrant city blocks at the epicenter of downtown Austin. We are proud to contribute by developing a project that will provide a special place for Austinites to live and enjoy for years to come,” said Brian De Lowe, principal of The Kor Group and president and cofounder of Proper Hospitality.
The Kor Group, an international real estate investment and management company with extensive holdings and development experience in commercial real estate properties, has purchased land located in the master redevelopment of the former Thomas C. Green Water Treatment Plant for the future home of Austin Proper Hotel and Residences.
“With two of the four components of the overall project underway, we truly believe that Austin Proper provides the perfect complement to our existing developments. By incorporating Austin Proper into the overall vision, the redevelopment of the Thomas C. Green Water Treatment Plant now includes luxury for-rent residences at Northshore, a trophy office building at 500 West 2nd Street and a dynamic new boutique hotel and residential tower. In addition, each of the projects will deliver walkable urban retail space that will make this development a true gathering place that exemplifies the often used “live work play” moniker. The vision of our partners at The Kor Group and Kelly Wearstler Interiors has exceeded our expectations and we look forward to delivering this one-of-a-kind addition to the Austin skyline,” said Adam Nims, principal of Trammell Crow Company. In addition to the land acquisition, the Austin Proper Residences sales gallery, located at 208 Colorado Street, made a debut recently with a grand opening celebration hosted in early February. The 1,800-square-

foot sales gallery will be open Wednesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., or by appointment via Austin Proper Residences’ website at liveaustinproper.com. Will Steakley and the team at DEN Property Group manage sales for the Austin Proper Residences, which began taking contracts in January 2016. “The Austin Proper Residences sales gallery allows visitors to experience ‘Proper Living’—a preview of the interior design and amenities offered at the property,” said Matthew Green, the Austin managing partner of The Kor Group. “The sales gallery includes a full-scale model, interactive visual displays, and a fully-outfitted model home with Kelly Wearstler-designed European white oak flooring, marble counters, natural stone floors, Studio Becker kitchen cabinets, Gaggenau premium appliances
and Watermark plumbing fixtures for the 99 homes at Austin Proper.” The Austin Proper Residences combine the benefits of home ownership with the energy, style, services and privileges of a boutique luxury hotel. Buyers will have their choice from a limited collection of one-bedroom to three-bedroom residences from 921 to 2,608 square feet and one-and two-story penthouses from 3,425 to 6,789 square feet. The residences and penthouses will feature floor-toceiling windows for optimal views and natural light, spacious outdoor decks, and sweeping views of both Lady Bird Lake and the Texas Hill Country. Amenities and services will include two roof decks with swimming pools, a full spa and fitness center, a signature lobby restaurant and lounge, a coffee shop and an elevated poolside restaurant all operated in collaboration with McGuire Moorman Hospitality.
As an added value, owners at Austin Proper will receive exclusive privileges and benefits such as priority dining and spa reservations, preferred pricing on hotel services and accommodations for friends and family and four stories of underground parking for residents, as well as extended benefits across all Proper-branded hotels. “The beautiful Austin Proper Hotel and Residences overlooking Shoal Creek will complement the city’s successful Seaholm District investments with a state-of-the-art mixed-use development,” said Kevin Johns, Director of the City of Austin’s Economic Development Department. “I am proud of the successful city planning and public-private partnership with Trammell Crow and team whose hybrid mixed-use building will connect the new 2nd Street Bridge to the larger Seaholm District while providing numerous community

benefits including improvements to the trails and public art.” The location of Austin Proper Hotel and Residences offers unmatched proximity to daily comforts, entertainment options, and outdoor amenities such as Shoal Creek, Ann and Roy Butler Hike and Bike Trail, and Auditorium Shores Park. The hotel and residences will enhance Austin’s bustling 2nd Street District, which is home to entertainment venues like The Moody Theatre at ACL Live, shopping destinations, diverse dining options, and employment centers. The residential tower also offers proximity to major grocers, including Whole Foods Market’s flagship store and Trader Joe’s. The Kor Group has assembled a talented group of architects, designers, and operators to collaborate on the Austin Proper Hotel and Residences. The team for the project is as follows:
•
Proper Hospitality: Proper Hospitality will operate the Austin Proper Hotel as part of the Proper Hotels brand, a new collection of vibrant and timeless hospitality destinations opening in some of the country’s most dynamic neighborhoods, including Hollywood, San Francisco, Downtown LA, and Brooklyn. Kelly Wearstler: Acclaimed designer Kelly Wearstler is creating the interior design for Proper’s hotel and residences. McGuire Moorman Hospitality: The team behind some of Austin’s favorite and award-winning restaurants (Lamberts Downtown Barbecue, Perla’s Seafood & Oyster Bar, Elizabeth Street Café, Clark’s Oyster Bar, Josephine House, and Jeffrey’s) is developing and operating the multiple food and beverage concepts located within Austin Proper Hotel and Residences.
• •
•
Handel Architects: Awardwinning Handel Architects LLP is responsible for the design of the 32-story modern high-rise. Trammell Crow Company and City of Austin: Austin Proper is part of the redevelopment of the former Thomas C. Green Water Treatment Plant, which is being led by the Trammell Crow Company under a Master Development Agreement with the City of Austin’s Economic Development Department. The Green Water Redevelopment will return 4 acres of prime downtown property to the tax base while delivering 1.7 million square feet of mixed-use development, including residential, office, retail/ restaurant, and hospitality uses. The redevelopment supports community efforts to make downtown more vibrant, walkable, and livable, while contributing housing resources. For more information, visit: www.liveaustinproper.com l

1 Bold Patterns Bold patterns and pops of color upgrade an interior from “ho-hum” to “dazzling.” Rich jewel tones are particularly striking when surrounded by natural wood, stone or even cool metal finishes. To get this look in your own home, choose one “stand out” piece. Whether this is a rug strategically placed under neutral armchairs or an accent wall, this item will serve as the anchor for the rest of your room. Choose a few items in the same color scheme to place around the space. These will serve to highlight your chosen stand out piece and bring the room together.
2 Functional Pieces As Steve Jobs said, “Design is not just what it looks like and feels like. Design is how it works.” A well-designed room speaks to the purpose for which it was created. Living rooms, for example, require ample seating while the kitchen might focus on emphasizing more counter space. Consider the purpose of the room you plan to decorate and make sure the design does not impede use of the room.
3 Natural Elements Nature is a source of rejuvenation and renewal. It’s time to bring the outdoors in with natural elements right in your own home. Sleek wood tables, stone façades covering entire walls or even a vase filled with peonies are timeless touches that dramatically change how a room is perceived. For an easy DIY, add a potted plant or satin tree to your favorite room. You’ll be shocked at the difference one little plant can make!

4 Hints oF eleGance Even on a tight budget, small hints of extravagance can upgrade any space. A tiled façade, upgraded lighting or even intricate designs on small end tables can add elegance to your home. Thomas recommends looking for something small, but impactful. The right touch of elegance can bring a sense of intrigue and wonder to your home.
5 adVice From tHe Pros It is a common misconception that a home must be only “French-country” or “modern.” In many cases, the most beautiful homes combine elements of many different design styles. Thomas recommends stepping outside your comfort zone. Pick something a little unusual or something you wouldn’t normally find attractive and make it your own. Visit their Web site at www.MichelleThomasDesign.com l Remember: opposites attract! Even if your living room is currently decorated in a very traditional style, a few modern touches can update the look and bring your home into the 21st century. Unexpected pieces add interest and become unique conversation pieces when entertaining. Michelle Thomas
Interior designer based in Austin, Texas She is a three-time recipient of the ASId design Excellence Rising Star award and has been featured in publications such as Texas Home & Living, Design Guide and Austin Home Magazine. michelle completed two renovations with HGTV’s Property Brothers in the spring of 2012 and continues to revitalize her client’s homes and businesses with elegant, functional designs.

Get Motivated To Get Organized
I
Simple tips to complete a closet makeover
t’s that time of year when you think about getting organized for a fresh new start. However, how many times have you thought about finally clearing out your closet, decided it’s just too overwhelming, and simply shut the door only to think about it later? “Let’s face it, most of us put cleaning out and organizing our closets at the top of our New Year’s resolutions’ list every single year,” said Barbara Reich, professional organizer. “But, how many of us just think about it without actually doing it? To get serious and take action, you need a plan of attack.” Once you make a commitment and get on board with the project, go from there with these tips from Reich.
•
Start by determining your overall goal. Are you simply organizing what you have or do you need to purge unused items? Get rid of things you don’t need or won’t wear. Remember that items in good condition can be donated to those in need.
•
Once you’ve determined just how much stuff you’ll have to organize, it’s time to consider what systems will best fit your space and needs. A do-it-yourself closet organizer product, such as ClosetMaid ShelfTrack, is 20
affordable, easy to install and adjustable, making it simple to create a customized design. Accessories, such as drawers and shoe shelves, help personalize the space, while fabric bins are perfect for storing handbags and other smaller items.
influential-magazine.com
•
Once you install your new system, the fun really begins. Start by hanging as much as possible; this makes it easier to see what you have. Group and place like things together by category, such as pants, skirts, tops, etc., then within each category, group by season and by color. Take advantage of prime real estate by positioning the things you wear most often in the place that is most accessible and easiest to reach.
•
•
Before you decide exactly which pieces you need, sketch out your plan on paper or use an online design tool. ClosetMaid’s DIY Design Tool even provides a parts list to help ensure you buy the right pieces for your design. You may also find it helpful to make a categorized list of all the items you need to store and mark them off as you identify the right storage products for your space.
Once you have everything hung and stored in its proper place, congratulate yourself on having the closet makeover checked off your list. However, to continue enjoying your newfound organization, you must be vigilant about keeping the space organized. Have a plan in mind when you purchase new things. Ask yourself if you really need the item and determine what you can discard to make room. For more tips to help you get organized this year, visit www.ClosetMaid.com l

Music is for Lovers
Carlie Burdett Composes Music for Bird Lovers
C
lassical music can influence thoughts and emotions in such an impactful way. It can inspire the imagination and soothe a stressful mind,” says Carlie Burdett. As a composer with an extensive portfolio, Burdett has spent much of her life listening to and creating various melodies and seeking ways to share this love with her community. “Within children especially, I’ve always wanted to instill an appreciation for music. Listening to music and reading are both important exercises for a developing brain,” and many experts would agree. According to a study from the Institute of Education at the University of London, playing classical music for young children boosts their levels of self-discipline and concentration. The study also suggests by being exposed to classical repertoires, young children’s listening and social skills are improved and they become more likely to appreciate a wider range of music in later years. “Though my initial intention was a career in mathematics, I was drawn to the creative process of composing music and fortunately it requires they require many of the same skills,” says Burdett. “Music allows me to communicate through beautiful melodies, interesting harmonies and meaningful lyrics to create music that is enjoyable as well as memorable. My hope is my music moves others to celebrate life and encourages those who are faced with its challenges and stresses.” When sharing her love of music with her grandchildren and their peers, Burdett was inspired to create fun songs and present them in a way
22
influential-magazine.com
that could be shared and enjoyed by children and parents alike. “It’s important to me that children are introduced to classical melodies in an entertaining way.” With that objective in mind, Burdett composed ten original piano pieces which she then used as inspiration for an accompanying illustrated book. The result became Music for Bird Lovers which uses imagery to visually engage its audience, while highly rhythmic music inspires the reader to imagine each bird’s unique movements. The book also educates through detailed descriptions of the birds’ habitats, scientific names and other fun facts. The CD begins the storytelling journey with a combination of original piano music and narration by Burdett’s granddaughter, Hanna Pak, while the audience reads along in the accompanying book. The balance of the CD provides an opportunity to let the music alone make each bird’s story come alive within the imaginations of its listeners. Through this collaboration of narrated storytelling, reading and contemporary classical sound, Music for Bird Lovers demonstrates to young children the ways classical music can bring our world to life. “The books are for sale in a few shops throughout my community and online at CarlieBurdettMusic.com, but I’m hoping many more children can experience these
Book Music is for Lovers
stories even outside the state of Texas,” says Burdett. After receiving a donation of Burdett’s work, a Texas children’s hospital created a digital copy of Music for Bird Lovers to display via their hospital-wide skylight video while her piano music plays. “If for even just one moment this allows a child to escape to a new place using their imagination, I feel fortunate to have my work provide that opportunity.” Burdett greatly enjoys the creative process of composing music, writing lyrics and setting poetry or scripture to music. She writes from her heart and her lifelong passion has become a language through which she shares her compassion for others. Lifestyles Changes
To Prepare You For
D
o you want to live longer and healthier? I recommend five basic lifestyle changes to lower the chances of getting many age-related diseases and increase your chances of staying active and independent.
1
. Drink Lots of Water
Forget diet pills and cleanses. Water is the safest, least expensive and most effective
kWRITTEN BY Tim Valderrama weight loss supplement on the market today. Water creates that feeling of fullness to help suppress your appetite. Just taking one glass of water before a meal is a good way to keep you from overeating at a particular meal. Preventing overeating, which is one of the main causes of weight gain, will not only help you maintain
25
in fluence
Health & Wellness
your current bodyweight, but also help you lose weight. Water is the best beauty treatment. Water will do wonders for your looks. It flushes out impurities in your skin, leaving you with a clear, glowing complexion. It also makes your skin look younger. Skin that is becoming saggy, either due to aging or weight loss, plumps up very nicely when the skin cells are hydrated. In addition, water improves muscle tone. You can lift weights until the 12th of never, but if your muscles are suffering from a drought, you won’t notice a pleasant difference in your appearance. Muscles that have all the water they need contract more easily, making your workout more effective and you’ll look much nicer than if you had flabby muscles under sagging skin. So keep a bottle of water with you in your car, at your desk or in your bag and drink from it often.
2
. Get up and Stretch regularly
Sitting for long periods of time contributes to heart attack and stroke risk and metabolic syndrome and even insulin resistance. Those who sit a great deal also have lower life expectancies up to 40%
according to the University of Sidney’s School of Public Health in Australia. So take time to get up and stretch. Break up those long days at work where on any given day you may sit for eight to 10 hours. A few recommendations for you as you incorporate stretching: - Before stretching, warm up with light walking around the office for couple of minutes. - Don’t cold stretch. Don’t bounce as you stretch as this can cause small tears in the muscle. These tears leave scar tissue as the muscle heals, which tightens the muscle even further, making you less flexible and more prone to pain. - Hold each stretch for about 30 seconds. Expect to feel tension while you’re stretching, not pain. If it hurts, you’ve pushed too far too quick. -Repeat each stretch three or four times a day. Over time stretching consistently will increase better posture, blood flow and result in a decrease in aches and pain. To help you maintain correct posture while sitting at work and good circulation throughout the body, I recommend sitting on a stability ball. The idea of sitting on the ball versus a traditional chair is, the change can increase core strength, since the abdominal muscles must be constantly engaged to avoid falling off. Improving core strength means improving posture, balance and stability. Experts also cite increased calorie burn as a benefit of maintaining your balance throughout the day. Be sure to check with your healthcare provider to determine if the stability ball as a workplace chair is right for you.
3
Get Plenty of Sleep, It’s Important
Not only can stress and worry cause insomnia, but a lack of sleep can leave you vulnerable to even more health related risks. Your immune system relies on sleep to stay healthy. This system 26
influential-magazine.com
defends your body against foreign or harmful substances. Ongoing sleep deficiency can change the way in which your immune system responds. For example, if you’re sleep deficient, you may have trouble fighting common infections. When you’re well-rested, it’s much easier to keep your emotional balance, a key factor in coping with job and workplace stress. Certain medical conditions have been linked to sleep disorders. These conditions include heart failure, heart disease, obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, stroke or transient ischemic attack (mini-stroke), depression and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). If you have or have had one of these conditions, ask your healthcare provider whether you might benefit from a sleep study. Monitor your sleep schedule. Aim for eight hours of deep rest a night. The total sleep lost is called your sleep debt. For example, if you lose two hours of sleep each night, you’ll have a sleep debt of 14 hours after a week.
4
. for Motivation, Try a Pedometer
A pedometer senses your body motion and counts your footsteps. This count is converted into distance by knowing the length of your usual stride. Wearing a pedometer and recording your daily steps and distance is a great motivating tool in conjunction with a goal. A common goal is 10,000 steps a day, which is equivalent to about five miles, depending on the
length of your stride. You can wear a pedometer all day, every day and record total steps. They range in price from $5 up, but before you buy one check with your workplace. Some companies sponsor walking programs and give out pedometers for free. The benefits of keeping active include reduced blood pressure and weight loss, as well as increased energy, mobility and muscular strength.
5
. unplug the Electronics
Imagine for a moment sitting in your dining room with absolutely no electronic devices around you. The noise of the social media universe is nonexistent; you are not shuffling emails of instantly forgotten posts and tweets, rather you are left to your own thoughts and nothing more. For once, you are spending time with just yourself and no one else, you can reflect on your day; enjoy a conversion with members of your home. It almost seems like an odd concept to think about, but when you’re constantly consumed by social media on countless devices, you are actually sharing time with others. Unplug! When you do unplug from the outside world, it’s incredibly nice. Try reading one of the many interesting books you have never finished or better yet, walk around the neighborhood and enjoy the fresh air and exercise. The shift in spending time with you is very refreshing. l

he importance of ongoing eye care is a lesson champion wide receiver Victor Cruz learned young and learned well.
“When I was young my mom made sure I went to all my annual vision tests and had my eyes checked numerous times just to make sure I was up to date,” Cruz said. “I had to make sure my vision was right because I was an athlete playing multiple sports and she wanted to make sure my vision was taken care of first and foremost.” In fact, the eyes are a good indicator of overall health. Trouble with your vision can be a red flag regarding eye health. In addition, according to the American Optometric Association, a range of signs of illnesses can be detected through an eye examination, including diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease and even rare hereditary diseases. The World Health Organization, among other health authorities, asserts that more than 80 percent of vision problems can be prevented, treated or cured. Here are five easy tips for taking care of your eyes from the experts at Alcon, a global leader in eye care:

advise you on how regularly you should have an eye exam. This will vary based on your age, health, family history and whether you wear glasses or contact lenses. According to the American Optometric Association, most healthy people over six years of age should have an eye exam every 1-2 years.
Be open with your eye doctor. Be sure to tell your doctor about any discomfort or irritation you may be experiencing with your eyes or if you notice changes in your vision. There are new vision technologies being introduced regularly so there may be new products that can help you.
Ask for comfort when choosing lenses. If you need corrective contact lenses, recognize that advances have been made in contact lens technology and ask your eye doctor which product may be right for you. For example, DAILIES TOTAL1® contact lenses are the first and only contact lenses with water-gradient technology. The contact lens approaches 100 percent water content at the outermost surface,* creating a cushion of moisture that delivers outstanding end-of-day comfort.
Protect your eyes from digital eye strain. Spending two or more hours a day staring at a screen (computer, smartphone, tablet, television, etc.) can lead to digital eye strain, which can result in physical straining that leads to dry, itchy or burning eyes. The Vision Council recommends protecting your eyes by following the 20-20-20 rule: for every 20 minutes you spend staring at a screen, take a 20 second break and focus on an object 20 feet away.
Keep contact lenses clean and replace them as recommended. Despite our best intentions, many of us aren’t properly caring for our contact lenses. In fact, a recent study conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found approximately 99 percent of lens wearers reported at least one contact lens hygiene risk behavior, such as swimming in contact

Beat The Heat With
S
Pet Safety Tips
unny, warm days bring the welcome opportunity to change up your routine and spend more time outdoors with your beloved pets. However, soaring temperatures bring risks from heat and sun exposure, making your furry friends rely on you to help keep them healthy and safe. Make these warm-weather adjustments to keep your pets in top condition and ready to enjoy all the season has to offer with these safety tips from PetSmart experts:
1.Keep them hydrated. Dehydration and heatstroke can be fatal to pets, so access to a clean water bowl both inside and outside is critical in the 30
summertime. While you’re on the go, be sure to bring water for your pet in a suitable drinking container.
2.Serve up healthy meals. Warmer weather invites opportunities, such as enticing picnic spreads, for pets to nab tasty treats. Protect your pet’s health by preventing them from ingesting food intended for humans and opt instead for food and treats that fit their special needs and preferences. The varieties offered by Natural Balance, which is now available at PetSmart,

span dry and wet food made with premium quality ingredients in formulas such as limited ingredient, grain-free and weight management.
3.never
leave your pet in a parked car.
Studies show on a hot day, the temperature inside a car can reach more than 160 degrees in five minutes. Leaving the windows cracked for fresh air or parking in the shade doesn’t keep temperatures from soaring in record time, either. Leaving pets in the car “just for a minute” is never a good idea.
4.Groom regularly. One of the best ways to keep a dog’s coat healthy and help prevent matting and summertime skin irritation is regular grooming. The right grooming tool can dramatically reduce shedding by removing the undercoat and loose hair without sacrificing the healthy top coat.
5.Provide
Treats such as Natural Balance Dental Chews do double duty by giving a little help with oral care between brushing. Scientifically formulated with unique grooves, these tasty treats encourage natural, healthy chewing to help reduce and remove tartar and plaque.
8.Provide
outdoor relief. The best spot for your pet to cool off in the yard is a shaded grassy area because grass releases moisture and keeps your pet cooler than concrete, dirt or gravel. For added comfort, provide a raised bed that increases the flow of cooler air underneath the bed mat to help your pet beat the heat.
9.Keep water safety top of mind. Even if you consider your dog a good swimmer, a life jacket is very important if you take him with you on the boat or trips to the beach.
skin protection.
Just like humans, dogs can experience sunburn and even skin cancer. To prevent sunburn, apply a sunscreen where hair is thin and skin lacks pigment (nose, ears and sensitive areas) every day your dog is outside.
Find more ways to keep your pet summer safe at www.petsmart.com l
6.Avoid hot surfaces. Dogs’ pads may seem tough, but sidewalks, pavement and sand can get so hot in the summer that dogs’ feet can burn and blister. To prevent this, schedule walks for the morning or evening, when sidewalks are cooler or purchase protective boots designed just for dogs.
7.Practice
smart snacking. After exercising and in between meals, a sensible snack can provide a boost of energy. 31

You Are Not Alone Successfully Coping with Anxiety, Depression and Stress Through Self-Care
H
ow you handle stress can affect your overall health. At one time or another, everyone experiences a difficult passage in life when their coping skills are challenged. It can be difficult juggling life’s obligations when we become stressed, anxious, worried, angry or depressed. However, these feelings are normal and it is a part of the human experience to mentally and emotionally process our own individual reality. When we go through a breakup, lose a job, worry about our family, have stress at work, or lose a loved one, our mood is affected. One thing to keep in mind is each person deals with stress differently and we all have varying levels of resiliency. What might take one person a few weeks to get through an emotional issue, might take another person months. In any situation, acknowledging your feelings is paramount to overcoming a problem, instead of burying emotions. Some of us throw ourselves into work as a form of distraction. Sometimes a distraction can be good, but if you are not dealing with the issue it can bubble up at a time when you are not prepared to process those emotions. On the flip side, many of us 32
kWRITTEN BY Renée Hanson Malone, MA become consumed by our emotions. In this case, your work and home life suffer as the problem at hand rents so much space in your head. Having an outlet to process your feelings with someone can provide tremendous relief, whether that be a friend or a professional counselor. The beauty of accessing a mental health provider is it offers a private, safe place to acknowledge your feelings with someone who is a neutral party. Moreover, licensed counselors have specialized training and they can offer meaningful techniques and suggestions to help overcome life’s challenges. As a society, we really need to think of our mental health as an extension of our physical health. One affects the other. That is why diet and exercise are so beneficial. Not only are healthy foods and physical activity good for our bodies, but they are good for our mind and mood. Conversely, when we are anxious it often shows up as pain in our stomach. And when we are angry or stressed, one feels tightness in the chest or may have a hard

time sleeping. So when we are not feeling well emotionally, accessing a professional counselor can provide immediate mental relief and at the same time benefit our overall physical well-being.
They have helped to improve the mental health of over 140,000 children and family members in their 65 years of service. You can learn more information about the Center at www.austinchildguidance.org
It is particularly important for children to access mental health care when they are struggling with significant emotional issues. Considering the fact that half of all lifetime mental illnesses begin by age 14, early identification and treatment is critical to improving the quality of life for children and our future adults. The Austin Child Guidance Center is a trusted community resource for children and families.
Life can often feel like a balancing act when we are struggling through difficult situations. However, one must remember there is hope and obstacles can make us stronger. Each time we confront difficult situations, we have the opportunity to learn about self-care through acknowledging our feelings, talking with someone, paying attention to our physical health and becoming more mindful of living in the present moment. l

T
here is no shortage of books or blogs that discuss how to have a better relationship — or at least how to save one on life support. The secret to better communication or resolving conflict or hotter sex or just about any issue impacting your relationship is just a click or swipe away. But, what seems to be missing; however, is an honest discussion on how to end a relationship. Maybe because it is too painful or too awkward to talk about endings that we push the topic into the corner hoping it will not see the light of day. We would much rather talk about something more hopeful and positive than something that conjures up images of hurt and grief. Besides, who wants to be known as the grim reaper of relationships. But, relationships end. And some need to end. But, how do we do it? Most of us know what it is like to fall for someone, to let our hearts and feelings go and take the chance of connecting to another person in a way that makes us feel more alive. Relationships allow us to grow and stretch into a new way of being. Relationships have a personality and life of their own. They progress through different stages of development. And sometimes, a lot of times, they end. Chances are you know what it is like to have a relationship or the hope of one materializing, end in a way that leaves you feeling robbed, raw and reeling with resentment. It stings. Bad good-byes hurt. And it seems some people who want out can create all kinds of excruciating exits. Ceasing all communication out of the blue — no returned calls or texts or emails for no reason; just a haunting, deafening silence. Chronic conflict where

And the most explosive exit of all — cheating. Nothing cuts to the marrow quite like betraying a sacred trust. When we want out, it is easier to simply start an argument so we can leave mad or stop talking altogether or look for solace in the sensuality of someone else. But the scars of theses exits will show up in our psychological x-rays for a long time. Years ago a professor of mine in graduate school told me “How we are told good-bye affects the way we say hello.” How have you been told good-bye? How have you said good-bye? Regardless of how bad the relationship may be, leaving it is hard. We are not only leaving a person but we are walking away from all of the hope and energy and time we invested. Toxic exits are based on intense feelings, on reactions to our being hurt. And as a friend of mine once told me, “Hurt people hurt people.” Be careful. Remember, good-byes shape our hellos. Choose words and actions based on thoughts — think your way through the process. The last thing you give to this person and yourself, can be a civil good-bye. Once out, take some time to feel all of those bad, gross feelings. Let it hurt. Let it heal. Then let it go. In the words of Sigmund Freud, “We become whole through relationships and through letting go of relationships.” I also think we become whole by learning to say hello…again. l

mongst Bisiot’s current project is the release of the much-anticipated book, Mind Your Hair, a thought-provoking book providing guidance through the journey of style and life transformation. We had a chance to get to know this celebrity hairstylist and author a little better. Peruse our interview with the sought after hairstylist. InFluential Magazine: When did you realize hair was your passion and you needed to do this as a career? Patrice Bisiot: My passion was evident at a young age; as if it were part of my DNA. I would accompany my mother during her visits to the salon and recall the smell of hair products. Also, I remember recognizing the special relationship between the stylist and client. I knew hair styling was my calling and thus pursued it as a career. I’m a pioneer in the family as no one else had studied the art of hair styling.
43
EXCLUSIVE FEATURE
InFluential: When was the moment you realized “okay I made it?” PB: When I was asked to be the hair stylist for an actress attending an award ceremony. As she walked the red carpet, I fielded questions from the media about my style choices. It was at that moment, I realized I had made it! InFluential: As a busy hair stylist, what does a typical day look like for you? PB: Daily meditation is very important to me because of its ability to refocus and renew. I’m an avid believer in the benefits of exercise and weekly spin classes help me stay healthy. InFluential: Describe yourself in five words or less? PB: I strive hard to be passionate, loyal, honest, kind and patient. It’s the manner in which I consistently live my life. InFluential: What are a few things you can’t live without? PB: I must have my phone, my notebook and pen, my electronics and I absolutely cannot do without music. InFluential: What is the most rewarding part of your career as a hairstylist? PB: My most rewarding achievements in hair are probably different than you might think. Some people think doing hair for popular celebrities would rate amongst my biggest accomplishments. While those have all been incredible opportunities to build my brand, my favorite rewards 44
have been opportunities to travel. I have met extraordinary people who have contributed to my life experiences. True luxury is being in the company of good people. I so enjoy working with my clients and creating a winning style for each of them and in doing so, I’m called the hair whisperer and that is so cool. InFluential: Where do you draw your inspiration? PB: Quite simply, I draw inspiration from life. I stop, look and listen intently and without judgment. InFluential: Do you have a signature look you like to create? PB: My favorite type of styling is for an editorial because I have opportunities to be very creative. I really enjoy taking hair and making it into a one-of-a-kind sculpture. InFluential: If a woman is bored with her hair, what’s your advice for a quick and easy style switch to get her out of that rut? PB: I apply five steps which will always start with a consultation. My new book Mind Your Hair, discusses in detail, each of the five steps. If I determine during consultation a client is not truly ready to make a change, than it doesn’t happen. InFluential: Do you have any hints on the next big thing in hair trends for 2016? PB: On the political front, there is much going on throughout the

world which causes people to be more restrained. A reaction, styles and trends are more conservative. So I foresee a return to more basic and streamline hair styles, with just a touch of edginess. InFluential: Tell us about Mind Your Hair? PB: I am very excited to bring Mind Your Hair to the public and truly hope they will embrace it. Mind Your Hair is the result of years of observation and consultation with my clients. Readers will understand any form of change is done with awareness of how and why. Self-awareness and a deep understanding who you are inside are where the journey starts. Change of any kind should come from one’s mind and grow into a well-adjusted decision before any type of physical transformation can occur successfully. Mind Your Hair guides readers through the journey of transforming not only their style, but their life! InFluential: What’s next for Patrice Bisiot? PB: I was signed recently as a keynote address speaker which will provide an excellent platform to speak and message about the powerful lessons outlined in Mind Your Hair. Additionally, I’m developing a line of health supplements formulated to promote hair health and regenerations. My life is full and I wouldn’t have it any other way. l

ere’s one of the many reasons I enjoy wine. No two wines are alike. No matter the grape, the tastes can vary from the glass you use, the length of time it was chilled or left open to breathe, the level of acidity or the alcohol content; it’s tough to find two that are exactly alike. Those were the thoughts running through my mind when I had the opportunity to taste the wines created by new winery Cairdean Estate of St. Helena. This relatively new vineyard hosted a wine tasting of their wines at Departure Lounge in Austin, Texas and it was certainly a treat to behold. Cairdean means friends in Scottish Gaelic and reflects the owners’, Edwin and Stacia Williams, philosophy that wine is meant to be shared with friends. Winemaker Stacia earned a degree in Enology & Viticulture at Fresno State and strives to produce old-style, food friendly wines using, among others, Napa Picpoul Blanc, Napa Sangiovese and Napa Roussanne grapes. The tastings for the night included 2014 Napa Valley Haley Margaret, a delicious white blend of Pinot Gris and Roussanne, named after Stacia’s niece. For every bottle sold, a portion of the proceeds gets donated to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Next, was the 2012
Tasting Room Bar
Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, a dark ruby red wine with hints of dark berries and blackberry jam on the nose and good structure and balanced acidity on the palate. The 2012 Acquaintance Cabernet Franc was full of ripe red fruit of cassis and strawberry on the nose with a velvety smooth finish. While these wines are not currently distributed locally, Cairdean is working to get into Austin’s food and wine scene soon. In the meantime, Cairdean offers a three tier wine club, ranging from 12 bottles to 36 bottles per year. Edwin and Stacia Williams Cairdean Estate of St. Helena
If you plan to visit Napa soon, stop by Cairdean’s palatial vineyard which has four tasting rooms – the main room, a reserve appointment only room across from the main tasting room, one in the cave and one in the winery. Also, located on the property are The Farmer & The Fox restaurant with a view that looks directly out at the winery; Butterscots Bakery that serves artisanal sandwiches, salads, pastas, desserts and baked goods; and an art gallery that caters to the local art community. t may sound contrary to your healthy eating plan, but the human body actually needs some types of fat for heart and brain health. One common source is cooking oil, such as olive oil. Of the cooking oils most commonly used in North America, such as olive oil, canola oil, peanut oil and various vegetable oils, olive oil contains the most monounsaturated fat, which is widely recognized for its potential role in reducing the risk of coronary heart disease. In fact, beginning in 2016, olive oils will display the American Heart Association’s Heart Check-Mark* to alert consumers about olive oil’s heart-healthy benefits. It’s no secret regular maintenance helps prolong the life and performance of your vehicle, but you may be surprised by how many routine maintenance tasks you can complete by yourself at home. Get in the garage this spring and tackle that cabin fever with these DIY car care projects that can be done all at once and not only save money by helping prevent repair costs in the long run, but also help you save big on Photo Courtesy of Getty Images service fees.
Not only do you want fresh air while you drive, so does your engine. If your air filter gets too dirty or clogged, your engine won’t be able to suck enough air into the combustion chambers. Engine performance will be reduced, especially when you are passing or merging onto a freeway. If an air filter becomes sufficiently dirty and damaged, it could also allow harmful, abrasive contaminants into the combustion chamber, accelerating engine wear. Changing an air filter requires no more skill than hanging pictures around the house and is one of the easiest DIY car care projects, regularly taking less than ten minutes to complete. Changing your air filter every 12,000 miles or 12 months, whichever comes first, will provide better engine protection, but give careful attention to seasonal concerns such as fall leaves, debris hidden in dirty snow and road salt which can clog air filters. Designed and constructed with advanced features to capture and hold more dirt to keep engines cleaner in extreme driving conditions, FRAM Tough Guard air filters are ideal for strenuous driving conditions such as idling in heavy traffic, driving on dirty, dusty roads and towing heavy loads, all of which can put heavy strain on the engine. Learn more at FRAM.com and refer to the vehicle owner’s manual for air filter location and specific instructions.

2Oil
Oil is one of the most vital components of your engine’s overall health. It allows the engine parts to operate smoothly together, removes heat and prevents accumulation of things like carbon and varnish in the engine. Your owner’s manual will guide you to the right oil for your vehicle, but you may need to do some comparison shopping to find the right performance blend for your specific driving conditions and needs. Today, many auto manufacturers tout intervals of 5,000 miles and longer. However, those change intervals are based on using the correct oil and a quality oil filter, which should also be changed when changing the oil. A qualified repair technician can help you determine the best schedule for your vehicle and driving habits.

3 Transmission Fluid
The transmission fluid is another liquid vital to your engine’s proper operation. Gear shifting, cooling the transmission and lubrication are all critical roles that transmission fluid plays and all that work causes the fluid to deteriorate over time, particularly with harsh driving conditions. Your owner’s manual is a good starting point; it will tell you the change interval and the specifications for transmission fluid. Transmission fluid is highly specialized now and requires a fluid that meets the original equipment manufacturers’ specifications.
A cabin air filter cleans and circulates the air that enters through your car’s ventilation system. Contaminants can enter your vehicle with outside air and become concentrated, exposing passengers to higher levels of dust, dirt and allergens while also potentially limiting the effectiveness of your car’s air conditioner and defrost system, making it important to keep the cabin filter unrestricted. In general, a cabin air filter should be changed every 15,000 miles or once a year, but can vary depending on driving habits. Your owner’s manual may list the recommended service interval for your vehicle, but replacing all of your air filters at the same time is good practice.

5 Spark Plugs
Although many spark plugs are designed to last as long as 100,000 miles, certain conditions can damage the plugs, resulting in engine misfires, poor fuel economy and other malfunctions that affect overall engine performance. These performance issues indicate that at least checking, if not replacing, your spark plugs is in order. In addition, used car buyers should check the condition of spark plugs if no service history is available. Replacing spark plugs is a quick job requiring few tools, but it’s important to change one at a time so you do not mix up the plug wires. Take note of the condition of the spark plugs you remove: they should be slightly dirty, but a white or oily appearance may indicate other problems. Choosing the right plugs for your vehicle is as simple as talking with the staff at your local auto parts store; they’ll be able to point you to the right plugs for your vehicle. Always replace spark plug wires or boots that are worn, cracked or oil-soaked and reference your owner’s manual for more information.
Install an Air Filter Like a Pro Replacing your own air filter is an easy way to save the time and expense of a trip to the repair shop. Follow these simple steps from the experts at FRAM to be on your way to cleaner air in your vehicle in just a few minutes: 1. Use proper protective gear. 2. Loosen wing nut or other fasteners to remove filter cover. 3. Remove old air filter. 4. Clean filter cover and housing using a shop vacuum. 5. Install new air filter. Be sure it is sealed around the perimeter. 6. Replace cover and fasten. l

1. Be prepared.
3. Be punctual. Arrive on time.
Have the agenda, a notebook and pen, business cards and any other documents you may need ready. Determine what you can do beforehand to be ready to join in on the discussion.
Try your best not to arrive more than a few minutes early, so you do not interrupt any last minute preparations. At all costs don’t arrive late to the meeting. Sometimes being late is unavoidable. If you’re going to be late, let someone know as soon as possible. A call or text to the organizer is best. When you do enter, be as unobtrusive as possible. If a formal presentation is going on, you may want to wait until there is a break to slip into the room.
2. Be conscience of your image. Being clean and neat in your appearance and with your materials is an absolute must.

The Artof
Listening kAs Published BY The Emily Post Institute
The ability to listen is one of the most important talents you can bring to business conversations. Psychologists describe the three essential pieces of what they call active (as opposed to passive) listening. These apply to telephone conversations as well as face-to-face meetings.
74
influential-magazine.com
The Good Listener In the corporate world, it’s not only discourteous, but also unprofessional to be an indifferent listener. Supervisors claim they can easily tell whether a subordinate has been listening by the quality of the questions asked at the end of a discussion, along with the accuracy of his or her summation.
he is saying it, and what it means for your future association. With this step you become an active participant in an exchange of information, even though you may not yet have uttered a word.
Reconfirm
Listening
Be There When a session where valuable information will be exchanged is scheduled, attend it; even if it’s at an inconvenient time, don’t enlist a surrogate. You don’t want to count on someone else to tell you about what was discussed. And, when you do show up, be mentally and emotionally present as well; if your attention wanders, you’re not really there.
To show you understand, occasionally paraphrase what the speaker is saying. Once you’ve picked up the rhythm of the other person’s speech, you should be able to do this without seeming to interrupt.
Wait In conversation, patience is a virtue and interrupting is a sin. Remember there’s a fine line between the occasional interruption made to confirm or question a particular point and one that’s made because the speaker is bursting to throw in his two cents’ worth.
Listen Carefully Listen not just to the words, but also to the tone. Take notes if the situation permits it. If you’re not sure about the propriety of notes (at a lunch, for instance), the simplest thing to do is ask: “Mind if I jot down a couple of your points?”
Concentrate Pay close attention to what the other person is saying, no matter how tempted you are to let your mind wander. Also, try your best to be patient with someone who’s speaking too slowly or faltering in getting their message across.
Hear Now apply an elevated form of hearing that goes beyond the physical words to their meaning—mulling over and absorbing what the speaker is saying, why
Question If you don’t understand something, ask for an explanation or ask for the information to be rephrased.
Respond Use positive body language to show you’re paying attention. Lean slightly toward the speaker, and react to what he says with the occasional nod, smile or lifted eyebrow.
Keep Still If you’re at your desk, don’t shuffle papers or make a halfhearted effort to continue whatever you’re working on. When standing or seated in an audience, refrain from any distracting gestures, such as rattling the change in your pocket. l www.emilypost.com

A continuación comparto algunos tips importantes:
•
No olvides respirar mientras te estiras.

YOGA
la búsqueda hacia lo mas interno de nuestro ser COMENZAR EL DÍA CON UNA PRACTICA DE MEDITACIÓN PARA MUCHOS SUELE SER UN DESAFÍO, PARA OTROS ES ENERGÍA VITAL. HOY EN DÍA SUCEDE QUE BUSCAMOS CON MAS PRIORIDAD TENER ESPACIOS DE CALMA E INTROSPECCIÓN, LA VIDA AGITADA QUE IMPLICA EL TRABAJO, POCO TIEMPO CON LA FAMILIA Y PORQUE NO DECIRLO NUESTRAS AMBICIONES Y SUEÑOS HACEN QUE LLEVEMOS UN ESTILO DE VIDA MUY ACELERADO.
L

The sun can cause damage to your skin so protecting it with sunscreen and staying moisturize is what keeps my skin looking great. Teen: Describe yourself in one word and tell us why you chose it. KV: If I would describe myself in one word, I would use “determined”. I have a lot of goals in life to achieve. One of which is to inspire others. Although I have a lot of ups and downs myself, I strive to encourage people not give up on their dreams, as I never give up on mine. Teen: Looking back on your teenage years and what you’ve learned, what advice would you give to teenagers and young adults? KV: If they know what they want to do or be, go for it. One of the biggest things I’ve learned was to never let anyone tell you that you cannot do it. Make sure you have the tools you need, even if it takes everything you’ve got; it will be worth it. There are going to be people against your dreams, but don’t get discouraged or side tracked. You are on your way to something amazing! Teen: Of what are you most proud? KV: I am most proud of the fact I earned my degree in three years instead of 4.5. My determination and will to earn my degree definitely kept me going. As Miss Hispanidad International USA 2015, putting in work and helping others in the community is something about which I feel very passionate. I’ve been working with the non-profit organization Let It Be Foundation. Let It Be Foundation provides support and services to families of children diagnosed with cancer and other life-threatening illnesses. Volunteering my time with this organization has taught me tomorrow is not promised so give all you can to help others. Teen: What song gets you pumped up in the morning? What song do you turn to when you’re having a bad day? What’s your favorite song to sing in the car? KV: A song that definitely gets me pumped in the morning is Confident by Demi Lovato. It has such a great message. Like honestly, there’s nothing wrong with being confident! When I am having a bad day, anything Carrie Underwood makes me feel better about life. Her songs speak to me. My favorite song to sing in the car is Love Yourself by Justin Bieber. The beat, feel and tempo are so catchy! I am sure any girl can relate to this song. My favorite lyrics as an artist would be “I didn’t wanna write a song cause I didn’t want anyone thinking I still care. I don’t”. l

The Break?
Here are some last minute ideas and activities to make your spring break a little more exciting.
1. Begin a project - make a painting, build something out of wood, test out a scientific theory, learn how to code a website or video game. Has there been that one thing you always wanted to do or try, but just never had the time? Well Spring break is your opportunity. Don’t be afraid to try something new. Let your ideas and creativity flow.
2. Find a free concert, a show or maybe even a gaming expo in your city. Maybe one of your favorite musicians is coming to town or that comedian you’ve been dying to see. Perhaps you go on an adventure to see the local bands. Who knows, you might just discover the little band that will release the next big hit.
“If you always do what you’ve always done, you’ll always get what you’ve always got.” Henry Ford (1863-1947), American founder of the Ford Motor Company.

3. Volunteer. Don’t know what to do with your time? Help someone by volunteering time at a local animal shelter, nursing home, food bank, etc. The options are limitless!
4. Take some “me” time. Read a book, make your favorite food, take a nap, play some video games, take your dog on a walk. Taking the time to be by yourself can be a great way to reflect on who you are and to relax. It’s a time to get away from the pressure and expectations of your friends and peers. Friends are great. Don’t get me wrong, but sometimes you just need to spend a little time to focus on you.

5. Go explore the outdoors. Did you know natural environments promote calmness and restoration? Spring break is the perfect time to get away from everything that keeps you stressed in school. Whether you go on a day hike or a week long camping trip, there are plenty of beautiful and exciting places to explore to give your brain the relaxation it needs. l

DIY Spring

O
ver the years, this all began to change. Society instilled pressures to make one’s life perfect. Spring-cleaning, right around the corner of New Year’s resolutions, takes away from the true meaning of the season. “A fresh start” people uttered, but really those ideas, those guidelines to have a perfect life, only ever lead to disappointment. It’s hard to follow a resolution 365 days a year. It’s also hard to stay motivated to organize every aspect of one’s life in one dedicated season. Let’s do away with this “clean” spirit and the overwhelming stress it brings. Let’s take the spring season back to the magic, like it was as kids. The spring symbolizes a period of renewal and rebirth. Use these fun, simple DIYs to redefine happiness and the appreciation for life instead of the accumulation of things needing fixed and cleaned. Let magic and happiness happen. That’s what’s important. These DIYs are meant to inspire happy living and appreciation towards the spring season. Have fun this year and remember that life isn’t perfect. Life can’t be completely organized or reinvented. Instead, it’s about the little things to create a healthier, cheerier lifestyle.
What you need: l One wooden storage crate, can be found at Target. l Acrylic paint, I used a heather grey color because it’s a neutral, perfect for inspiring simple living. l String of lights or Christmas lights. l Old sheets/blanket. l Painting sponges. Steps: 1. Lay out sheets in an open space, so there won’t be a mess after painting. 2. Set crate down and begin painting the inside using the sponges. Play around with the strokes and thickness of the paint to keep the wooden vibe going. 3. Paint the outside. 4. Let dry for 30 minutes, flip over and paint the bottom. 5. Let dry completely for another 30 minutes or until dry. 6. Use twinkle lights to intertwine amongst the side panels. The newly transformed crate is very versatile; use as a basket and turn the lights
on in the evening, put on a desk or table on its side to function as shelving or hang it up on a wall as a floating shelf unit.
Indoor Garden Nothing symbolizes springtime more than fresh herbs and vegetation, especially when presented in a very creative way. Greenery is important to any home because plants induce happiness. They just do. There is something about their ability to brighten a room or their sweet smells that needs to be appreciated. Using herbs adds a dynamic multisensory appeal and can add intense flavors to cooking. Basil and rosemary give off amazing aromas, which will inspire more time utilizing the kitchen. Healthy eating is a great way to bring about more feel good vibes, especially in the spring when seasonal fruits, vegetables and herbs make for wonderful dishes. What you need: l To make this indoor garden even livelier, use unique mugs or jars found at any store selling knickknacks or even at
Wooden Crate To kick off the DIY spirit, let’s start with something simple that also inspires simple living. So often, people can get carried away with filling up their home with clutter, they can lose the lovely aspects of a clean, minimalistic space. Add basic storage with a chic twist and organization will spring into action. After all, that’s what this season is supposed to be about, let’s just take out the negativity.

Teen thrift stores. Get one mug for each plant and try to make them all different. It will add a free spirit sense to the space. l Find some plants. any time and definitely not in one season. However, the addition of small lifestyle changes can inspire a serene transformation. Art journaling allows one to get in touch with their creative side, and there is no artistic talent needed for this project. The whole point is to take a break from the busy schedule and play around with colors, emotions, words and art supplies.
don’t worry about messing up. This journal isn’t for anyone but you. Also, another tip, if the front cover is a picture, not a quote, consider giving the book a name like a book title. 3. Let the paint dry then sign your name, the author, and the year. This way, when reminiscing over the journal’s content, it’s easy to see when it was made.
After planting, display the collection in any fashion. Lining them along a windowsill allows them to get sun light, but on a counter or spread across the kitchen and living room works as well. There is no wrong with this DIY.
What you need: l Plain, preferably black, mixed media art journal. l Acrylic paints. l Paintbrushes.
Again, no one needs to be an artist to do this. Everyone has a little creativity in their heads, this journal helps access it. Mixed Media means the pages are thick enough to be painted on, but do whatever the heart desires. Try painting, drawing, collaging, scrapbooking, doodling or just writing in them. The point of this journal is to tell the creator’s story and encourage new chapters in their life. Spring is about new growth, so grow more in touch with the mind and the heart.
Art Journal Spring weather isn’t always nice, breezy and sunny. Sometimes there are lots of drizzly days, but don’t let those days take the peace and calm away. Instead, use these days as a way to center the mind and creativity. Reinventing oneself is unrealistic at
Steps: 1. Come up with an idea. Because this is a spring inspired DIY, maybe try something inspired by flowers, wildlife or rain. Quotes also make great first entries because they are simple and motivational. 2. Paint on the front cover, so it creates a personal book cover. Go slowly and
Picnic With Friends Really take the magic back to childhood adventures by creating a cute, DIY backyard picnic to celebrate the nice weather. Get as creative as desired because friends will appreciate anything as long as they’re with friends. Go as simple as taking some PB&Js, lemonade and blankets to the park on a nice day or set something up in the backyard. Use pillows and blankets to create a cozy environment and serving platters to display the food. Easy picnic food ideas are tea sandwiches, homemade flatbreads, fruit kebabs, chicken salad, carrots and hummus, or even Mac n’ Cheese. For drinks take sparkling fruit juice or lemonade. Another great addition to a picnic is music, so if possible, bring a portable speaker to play

Teen Testimonies “I’d advise anyone who is looking to volunteer to find something they are passionate about. That’s what I did. For example, I’m an avid reader so I started volunteering at the public library. Not only did I find lots of new books to read, I was able to read to little kids and watch their excitement as they grew to love books just as much as I did. I also love to sing so I joined my church teen choir. When you volunteer, you are giving apart of yourself to others. Give your talents and yourself and the people you help will touch your heart. I’m not saying it will always be easy or convenient, but if it’s something you love, the people you are helping realize this and you won’t ever regret it.” Priscilla
“Volunteering isn’t as difficult as it may seem. In fact, I volunteered for the very first time when I was five years old. Simply walking in a 5k race with my family helped contribute to raising awareness and money to a great and meaningful cause. Since then, I’ve participated in many more and even helped cheer on or distribute out waters to people during races. It’s that easy. Not only is it easy, but it has such a positive impact. For example, I’m able to help out annually at the MS 150, a bike race from Houston to Austin, that helps support people with MS and it’s very
close to my heart. Since I can’t always be there psychically, it’s nice to feel like I’m making a difference, no matter how small the action. My advice, try volunteering with friends or family to make the experience more enjoyable, but most importantly remember the cause you are supporting and that will keep your passion and drive forever prospering. As cheesy as it may sound, it truly helps make a difference.” Sophie

However, in all the fun of SXSW, there emerges a type of frenzied creative chaos and through the madness it’s very easy to get lost within the raging sea of performing artists who all wildly jockey for attention within the same six days of performance opportunity. On top of everything else, the very nature of SXSW (most of the music venues being local bars) leads many of the hosted, and non-hosted, events to have irritating age restrictions that leave any musiclover under the age of 21 at a serious disadvantage. In the past, these age restrictions have made buying festival tickets a total waste
122 teen
of money in the hands of minors, but that doesn’t particularly mean the whole week should go to waste. There are many public or non-SXSW sponsored parties that occur through the week where are all ages are welcome and often free (or at least cheap), occasionally with the requirement of a previously attained RSVP ticket. One of the most popular, non-RSVP, all ages and completely free events from previous years has been the Waterloo records hosted day parties, which have been known to draw big name bands who play for four days on a
stage set up right outside of the store on North Lamar Boulevard. In 2015, these day parties included bands such as Big Data, Clean Bandit, Twin Peaks, Elle King, Joey Bada$$, William Butler (from Arcade Fire), and a signing by AWOLNATION. Similar to the Waterloo Records parties is the free, all ages, Quantum Collective Southwest Invasion which has been held for two days each year on the rooftop plaza of the Whole Foods downtown location. In previous years, it has hosted bands such as The Zombies, X Ambassadors, Boy & Bear, Jukebox the Ghost and The Sheepdogs.

In addition to these, there is the Official SXSW hosted Outdoor Stage at Ladybird Lake, which annually features three days of charitable, free-to-thepublic and all ages entertainment that can host over 50,000 attendants. In the past, this stage has been known to present headlining acts such as Spoon, Foster the People, Childish Gambino, Cheap Trick and The Strokes. Other potentially all age (and public) music events from the past that will be likely be show up again for SXSW 2016 include: l The Death Match - The Death Match was all ages in 2015, located at the Gypsy Lounge (now the Lazy Lizard), free to the public and included bands such as Iceage, Title Fight and Pianos Become Teeth.
The Windish Agency Annual SXSW Day Party - The Windish Agency Annual has been held at The Mohawk in previous years, with free entrance to the public and a 2015 lineup which included BØRNS, ODESZA and Wolf Alice. l The Annual Austin Music Awards In the past the Music Awards were held in the Austin Convention Center, open to the public, $20 per ticket and has included acts from the likes of Shakey Graves, Nina Diaz, Billy Joe Shaver, Tameca Jones and Gary Clark Jr. l Spotify House - Spotify House has been free with RSVP in previous years and in 2015, showcased artists such as The Vaccines, Ryan Hemsworth and Run the Jewels. l
Side tips: l DO512.com is your friend, whether its SXSW season or not, this website includes an updated and fairly accurate list of almost all the events which occur in Austin. l Things to keep in mind: l Never travel alone. l Stay Hydrated. l Don’t be afraid to contact. the venues if you have any questions about age restrictions, admittance prices, etc. l Keep a bit of cash on you at all times - many vendors don’t take cards. l Look up the band before you go to a performance. l Schedule your week in advance for a more enjoyable experience. l

Lucky Escape: If someone enters a room through one door, they have to exit through the same door. It is great to be there and to support your girlfriend or boyfriend when they are going through a difficult time or have a lot going on, but it becomes a totally different situation when all they do is complain and throw negative comments in your direction. I mean, your parents already complain enough about you not listening, right?

When you think you are interested in someone else In the end, this situation will be bad for both of you. Don’t waste their time. On the other hand, if you are really committed to your significant other, take your time and make sure that those feelings you are having for another person are real before fully ending the relationship you’re in.

Their parents don’t like you This is never good. If you want to be in a serious relationship with someone, being liked by their parents - and your parents liking them - is a very important aspect, especially if family is important to you and your significant other. “Having friends and family approve of and support relationships is associated with their long-term success.” Dr. Benjamin Le

You don’t have similar interests People say opposites attract, but you do need to have at least a few similar interests.
Disclaimer: This article is addressing issues not related to an “abusive” relationship
“When our partner has similar values, likes/dislikes, personality characteristics, hobbies, interests, and background the relationship is more likely to succeed.” Dr. Gary Lewandowski

You have different morals Number one indicator your relationship is or will be toxic. Arguments always arise when morals differ within your relationship. Not only will disagreements occur, but when you and your significant other have conflicting morals, you can find yourself caught in a difficult situation. You may feel challenged, you may begin to doubt your personal beliefs and you might even find yourself lowering your standards and letting down your guard in order to “try to make it work.” In reality, you might just be getting into an unwanted situation that could have been avoided.
