ENGLISH AROUND THE WORLD Why is English the first foreign* language we study in school? Well... let’s discover it. The population in the world is approximately 7.5 billion* people. Do you know that there are almost 1.5 billion people who can speak English? It’s about 20% of the Earth’s total inhabitants! But there is an important distinction we have to make: for about 360 million people English is their first language, while the rest knows it as a second language. Anyway*, this means that English is spoken* in 101 countries around the world! It is also one of the official languages of 85% of all international organizations like the United Nations (UN). From one island, the United Kingdom, English is now considered a lingua franca in the world. What does it mean? A lingua franca is when people who speak different native languages* have one common language to communicate. How is it possible that English is now a global language? A short history will explain why.

1

Middle Ages: Greek is the lingua franca in the parts of Europe, Middle East and Northern Africa under the Byzantine Empire. Latin is used in the rest of Europe.

Roman Empire: the lingua francas are Latin and Greek.

2

1857: the British take over the Government of India, so Queen Victoria becomes Empress of India. 3

What is Social Media?

SOCIAL ENGLISH

Here’s the definition of Social Media in Oxford dictionaries: "Websites and applications that enable* users to create and share* content or to participate in social networking". What is social networking then? Social networking is a tool to join groups, learn about the latest news and events, play games, chat and share music and videos. Today social networking is an essential part of life for people all over the world. Some examples of social media are: blogs, forums, podcasts, photo and video sharing. The top social networking sites of today are: Facebook, MySpace, Twitter and Instagram. I’m sure you know them!

Where does social media come from? Let’s take a look starting from the beginning. Antiquity

People communicate across great distances through* media like writing.

1792 Thanks to the invention of the telegraph people have a technology that offers a "faster than horse" method of communication over long distances. It’s revolutionary for the time. 1800s Everything changes with the invention of telephone and radio, which enable instant verbal communication. 1971 The first email is sent*: it’s the birth of social networking. The computer sending the email and the computer receiving it are one next to the other and the message says “qwertyuiop’. 1994 The first social networking site appears: Geocities. With it users can create and customise* their own web sites.

Here is an image that summarizes* the history of social networks:

Can you see how much the world and people’s opportunity to interact have changed in the last century thanks to the Internet and social media? Let’s take a closer look* at the top three social networking sites of today and their main characteristics:

FACEBOOK appears in 2004 at the University of Harvard, in the USA. The inventor, Mark Zuckerberg, creates this platform to connect Harvard’s college students, so it’s exclusive at first*. In 2008 this networking website becomes open and it changes the history of social networks, becoming one of the most important of all time. Now it has more than 1500 million members around the world.

MY SPACE appears in 2003 and is different from the other social networks. In fact, with it you can create a personal profile, share photos, add* comments, have followers, and much more. It is mostly* famous in the United States, where many music bands use it to share their music and promote* themselves. TWITTER appears in 2006 and it soon has a major impact on society. Twitter limits posts to 140 characters, creating the first microblogging network. Today there is no world-class event that is not tweeted: a revolution in social networking. Twitter is also responsible for the creation of the hashtag (#). On August 23rd, 2007, Chris Messina writes the first tweet with a hashtag:

INSTAGRAM appears in 2010 and it reaches 1 million users just 2 months after its launch. Now it has more than 1 billion monthly active users. Instagram is one of the most popular social networks worldwide and it is officially the social media of the millennial generation*. People like it especially because it unables you to take ordinary pictures and make them look extraordinary. You can also upload videos and make money if you gain* a lot of followers. Other very famous social networks in recent years are: Pinterest

ENGLISH LANGUAGE AND LIFESTYLE

differences between the uk and the usa Day to day life is usually similar for most people. Are there any differences between British people daily life and American people routine? Let’s find out*! A research by Sleep Cycle shows that the average* wake-up time in Britain is 7.35 am, while* American people usually wake up at 7.08 am. We know that breakfast is the most important meal* of the day, and both English and Americans know this. In fact, around 80% of Americans have breakfast before they go to work. Their favourite breakfast is: a bowl of hot cereals like oatmeal or bacon and eggs. In Britain, 83% of people eat breakfast, choosing bread with jam or cereal or eggs. Their favourite drink is tea, of course! When it’s lunchtime, the majority of Americans eat while sitting at their desk, working. Only one in five employees* go outside the office to have lunch. Over in the UK a person usually has at least* a 20-minute lunch-break, but 54% of office workers admit they eat in front of their computers. American people work a lot, with an average time of 8.15 hours a day, while British office workers work 7.42 hours on average. The time people usually eat is also different between the USA and the UK. Americans tend to eat later* than British people, having lunch around 1pm and dinner around 8pm. British people usually have lunch around 12am and have dinner around 6pm instead. What about free time activities? After a long day at the office people in the UK spend an average of 5.49 hours a day on activities like going out with friends, doing sports, watching Tv, going to the gym and having other hobbies. In the USA people spend a little bit less time on leisure*: 5.13 hours a day. Another research by Sleep Cycle shows that Americans go to bed at 11.40 pm on avera-

If I ask you what’s the official language in both the UK and the USA you will answer without a doubt: it’s English! There are some differences between the two, though. When studying English as a second language, you need to know* some of these differences, so that you don’t get confused. Sometimes there are two different words to name the same object. Sometimes only the spelling of the word is different.

In fact English is the most common language that scientists use to publish and discuss about new theories and discoveries, even if they come from China or Norway. In 1997 the Science Citation Index says that 95% of its articles are in English, even though* only half of them come from authors in English-speaking countries. Also, with good conversational English you can go to scientific conferences and seminars.

5....................................................................... Technology is part of our daily life and it surely makes it easier. If we want to use a mobile phone or a computer, use a tablet or an mp3 player, surf the internet and use most of the electronic devices that are in our homes, we need to develop English language skills*. Can you imagine using a computer without knowing English? You simply cannot! Can you surf the Internet or change the settings in your new phone without knowing English? You simply cannot!

6....................................................................... I’m sure you know that some of the best films are in English and watching them in their original language is a lot more fun* than their dubbed* version or watching them with subtitles. What about music? I’m sure you know and listen to a lot of popular English songs. If you know English you can also sing along and maybe participate in X Factor! Finally, the majority of videogames are in English. If you know the language you can play and win more easily*.

7........................................................................ Finally, De Swaan calls English “the hypercentral language that holds* the entire world language system together”. The Japanese writer Minae Mizumura describes English as a “universal language” . For him, what makes it universal is not that it has many native speakers – Mandarin and Spanish have more – but that it is “used by the greatest number of non-native speakers in the world”. Are you convinced* now?

ENGLISH TAKES YOU TO SPACE! Living on the international space station. The International Space Station (ISS) is an artificial satellite orbiting 400 kilometres from Earth. The Space Station is a research laboratory in which crew members* conduct experiments in biology, physics, astronomy, meteorology, and other fields*.

How’s life for astronauts on the Space Station? During their stay on space astronauts continue living and working in an environment that is very different from living on Earth*. They always need to perform activities you also do every day: we’re talking about washing yourself, brushing your teeth, using the toilet and even putting on fresh and clean clothes. Even on the Space Station astronauts need to carry out personal hygiene! Don’t you think? It’s a small space that you share* with up to 13 people sometimes. Things can become very unpleasant* if someone is not taking care* of their personal hygiene! The conditions of weightlessness* on the Space Station mean they need to adapt these activities. Let’s see some of them in detail. 1................................................ When astronauts are brushing their teeth, there are a lot of differences from how you do it! The Space Station is orbiting the Earth very very fast: 28000 kilometres per hour, travelling continuously* around the Earth. For this reason inside it is weightless and everything floats*! Water and toothpaste, too. So on the Space Station astronauts are using toothpaste that can be swallowed* after brushing (edible toothpaste) and they are cleaning their mouth with a wet

78

2................................................ So if everything ‘floats’ in space, how do you go to the toilet? Well, there is a special toilet on the Space Station. The astronauts are strapping themselves in* to prevent floating off. After they finish they are not flushing, but there is a suction tube* which is taking the waste away in an air stream* down a hole. They are storing* the urine and recycling it. Certainly a strange way to go to the bathroom! 3................................................

wipe*. The astronauts are keeping their mouth closed to prevent* the toothpaste from floting out!

On Earth, there is gravity. Absence of weight in space can cause health problems, especially to bones and muscles*. Astronauts are exercising daily to prevent these problems, but to do it they are strapping themselves firmly while walking, running and exercising*. On board there is a treadmill and an exercise bicycle. Astronauts have to do at least 2 hours of exercise per day to stay in good shape*.
