HIGH SOCIE-THAI MEETS MODERN BEACH LUXE
Nahm Talay Thai now open at the Paradise Centre.
Do you like your Thai served with a side of oceanside luxury? And your dishes presented with high-end WOW-worthy details, feeding your eyes and stomach with spectacular flare and flavour? We’re even talking liquid nitrogen in some dishes, as well as bubble smoke on cocktails and no, this is not an immunity challenge on Masterchef, but what you can expect at Nahm Talay Thai in Surfers Paradise.
Situated in the newly renovated Paradise Centre, Nahm Talay Thai is the latest offering from Pattaree (Pat) Jiranuchaiwattana and Vitchaya (Alex) Hasitawet. This duo know a thing or two about executing traditional Thai and Asian dishes in style, with a five-restaurant strong portfolio in Queensland, including Chong Co Thai at Pacific Fair. Add talented chefs Metira (May) Wongtom and Nitis (Kai) Shombunsode into the mix, as well as a stunning DBI Design interior, the final product is a total vibe.
Offering indoor/outdoor dining, a beachfront balcony (perfect for events may we add), plus booth and couch seating, the venue accommodates 120 guests. Picture luxurious accents blended with a high quality,
modern beach aesthetic to complement the multi-million-dollar views. Cool grey hues and whites are warmed up with a sandy colour palette creating an oasis-like feel. There are contrasting textures throughout, a unique roof design, beautifully designed bar, and eyecatching golden metallic wave artwork.
Serving breakfast, lunch and dinner until midnight EVERYDAY, let’s start with the AM timeslot and oooh, the Soft Shell Crab Egg Lava definitely caught our eye. Featuring a croissant with salmon caviar, tobiko sauce, vine cherry tomato, and parmesan, LBR – we were born to eat caviar for breakfast. There is also a wide range of other brekky crowd favourites, but with an exciting Nahm Talay Thai twist. Pair your meal with a darn good coffee or refreshing (and super pretty) cold pressed juice and yep, you’ve started the day right.
If you’re more of a lunch or dinner person, the menu is once again off-the-Richter good. Order a serve of Crispy Pork Bao to start, with steamed bao, crispy pork belly, cucumber, coriander, spring onion, long red chilli, peanut and sesame oil. Then, it’s signature dish-oclock and besides happy hour, this is our favourite time of the day.

EAT + DRINK
Tuck into the Lamb Shank Massaman Curry with slow cooked lamb shank, mild curry, potato and cashew nuts, or the Barramundi Fillet steamed with lime sauce. Or, if you’d rather make friends with salad, you can’t beat the mouth-watering flavours of the Wagyu Salad We’re talking Wagyu MBD 9+, Thai herbs, tomato, cucumber, rice power, chilli powder, house dressing and pear.
And for dessert, may we recommend the Cream Brulée, with egg, cream, pandan, sugar, coconut, vanilla ice cream and chocolate crumble. Drool.
Now let’s get down to business – cocktails of course. Don’t miss the opportunity to sample a Bubble Smoke Lychee Martini and you had us at bubble smoke. With vodka, orange liqueur, lime juice, cranberry juice and lychee syrup and bubble smoke top, the yum-factor is only rivalled by the presentation.
Laying off the harder stuff because you’re in detox mode? Same (not really) and good news, the Mocktails are as delish and instaworthy as their boozy cousins. We’re ordering the Mint Lychee Frappe with lychee, lychee syrup and mint
Also, a quick shout out to the Jellyfish Shots because they are quite possibly the coolest things we’ve seen, and yes we’re back to alcohol #oldhabitsdiehard.
This brings us to the pointy end and the hardest decision yet. Should you go for breakfast, lunch or dinner (no more complaints about not being able to find a restaurant for a late-night feed, finally a venue open till midnight!) and our advice is a unanimous “all of the above”.

You’ll never feel like you’re taking up too much time or giving TMI because they want to hear it warts and all! They’ll explore the physical, the emotional, and the spiritual to help find the underlying cause/s of your complaints, then develop a tailored plan utilising the likes of diet, nutrients and practitioner-grade herbal medicine. Plus, there’s a support portal with a myriad of resources from mindset tracks, to programs, eBooks, and more.
Oh and The Feel Good Society will happily work alongside your doctor if necessary, so don’t think Computer Says No to a natural remedy /

traditional medicine mash-up. Naturopaths here believe total and long-lasting healthcare is best provided by a team, and a naturopath is just one needed part of that team.
With boss babe Suzzi at the helm, you know you’re in excellent hands. This gal knows her craft, inside out…and from the inside to the outside! With qualifications for days, she’s a distinction degree-qualified naturopath currently completing her Masters of Advanced Naturopathic Medicine and oh yeah, she’s written a published book. She’s also been there, done that, through her own personal health and emotional struggles. Her firsthand experience, enthusiasm for holistic medicine, and vast knowledge in the naturopathic space fuelled her passion to launch The Feel Good Society.
Ok you’re interested (we are too), so where to from here? Well first thing’s first, an Initial Consultation is the logical place to start. This includes an in-depth review of your current and past health symptoms, diet and lifestyle insight evaluation, plus a review of any recent pathology testing you may have. You’ll leave with a comprehensive personalised treatment protocol, including dietary and lifestyle suggestions and supplement schedule (if required), plus a five-day aftercare service. This exclusive offer of $99 (normally $199) initial session is 60-90 minutes depending on your case complexity, and available both online or in-person. Now that feels good already!
So, whether you’re pro mixed treatment, looking for an ‘alternative’ to traditional health care, or just beyond frustrated that no-one can provide a clear answer (let alone treatment path), The Feel Good Society will help you thrive, and feel radiant in your body again.

YOU’RE IN TREBLE AT HIDDEN CHERUB’S SOUND SECTION
Burleigh’s vegan bar scene will never be the same.
Is it just us, or does the prospect of a space dedicated to a superior quality sound experience blended with an immersive visual experience sound like something we need in our lives? Like, yesterday. Imagine if a healthy dose of cool, underground warehouse feels and plant-based nosh could be added to the mix, and we could quite possibly have a conniption at the mere thought #DreamVenueMuch. Well, this is not a dream or a drill and it’s time for all Gold Coasters to get excited because the entertainment game has just changed…for the better.
Our favourite hidden (first clue) and totally unique venue where the local music and art culture thrives has just launched an exciting Sound Section within its confines…and we will be eternally grateful to these cherubs (second clue, and oh hey Captain Obvious!).
Hidden Cherub, as if we didn’t have enough reasons to lust over your multifaceted and edgy cool girl vibes, we’re now officially obsessed.
Trailblazing owners Ben and Teagan Milgate wanted to do something fresh and unique, offering Gold Coasters an outside of the stock-standard box experience. Inspired by the sound rooms of New York City and Melbourne, this is not just another run-of-themill, ho-hum upgrade to a GC bar. In fact, the Sound Section of this community-based sanctuary may be the new kid on the block, but it’s already achieved ‘venue feature’ status.
Constructed with a next level sound system and acoustically treated to provide the best possible listening experience, it can also be fitted with any kind of art expression. Designed with the utmost attention to detail by Ben and Teagan (and built by Ben…just like the rest of the venue), the result is a hypnotic, unparalleled and all-consuming dance floor full of personality and individuality.
Separate to the dining area and bar (but not too far coz dancing makes us all hella hungry and parched), the Sound Section is
12 | insidegoldcoast.com.au
EAT + DRINK
perfect for private functions and will also house ticketed events (eeee – watch this space!). And don’t even get us started on the talent this new room will bring. But you can definitely expect Hidden Cherub’s resident DJ’s Elliot Ramsay, Ola Jar and Buff Girls to bring the beats and spin up a storm.
As for food and drink, you can order all your Hidden Cherub faves and if you’re not on the plant-based tucker train yet, this place will convert you with a single bite. Head Chef Corey McIntosh is da man, and we’re calling out his Spicy Fried Chick’n Burger with lettuce, sriracha and house made chipotle sauce for its pure plant-based sorcery. Another crowd pleaser is the Sticky Buffalo Wings in red dragon sauce and order a second batch coz trust us, you won’t want to share.
Moving along to beverages (our happy place), the signature infused, hand crafted cocktails catering to different pallets (sweet, sour, smoky etc) are iconic. Plus, all syrups and infusions are made in house, and we think that deserves a big ‘ole thumbs up. For the first round, our pick is the Dutch Bunny with Husk Botanic, Aperol, carrot shrub, ginger-agave syrup, lemon, angostura and orange bitters. Back that up with a refreshing Mai-Tai made with homemade chilli mango purée. And we could go on, but mama always told us to keep a little mystery…
So friends, the moral of the story is you can now get more than just a ten-outta-ten plantbased naughty food and crafted cocktails fix at this collaborative creative music and art sharing space. With the addition of the Sound Section, Hidden Cherub has surpassed our expectations and we can’t wait for you to check it out.

It’s up there with MAFS, Maltesers and margaritas but unlike those just mentioned, it’s actually good for your physical and mental health. As with most things, however, some massage therapists are better than others and we’re here to talk about the best in the biz – the miracle workers at White Stone Healing Centre.

DO I LIKE ALFRESCO DINING? YOU BET SHIRAZ I DO!
If we were asked to describe restaurant heaven, it would go a little something like this: We’d be perched on an outdoor terrace with our posse, rocking our cutest #OOTD and soaking up the beautiful GC rays. We’d naturally have an exotic cocktail (or mocktail) in hand, before tucking into a delicious modern Persian feast. For the keen foodies playing along, we just described a lunch or dinner at the famous Shiraz, which has recently climbed even higher up the food chain of GC eats venues. With the recent addition of a terrace, this Middle Eastern mindblower will eternally have us in its corner. And let’s be real, when you share your name with our favourite tipple, we were always coming along for the ride #PowerMove.
A well-established local hero, Gold Coasters and tourists alike have been flocking to Shiraz for over a decade. It became so popular that owner Erfan Jalilian and business partner Mohammad Shirmehrjerdi moved to a larger venue allowing Shiraz to spread its
wings … ironically into Mantra Wings Surfers Paradise. Occupying the world-famous site where The Pink Poodle once thrived, the GC Highway site is iconic once more with Shiraz’ army of stage five clingers growing by the day.
The one thing diehard devotees wished for was a sun-drenched area with a bar vibe, where they could catch up with mates, hydrate with a beverage in the afternoon and/or evening, and enjoy our city’s enviable climate. Erfan and Mohammad certainly

listened, delivering a stunning terrace space accommodating up to 60 bods, with a tasty side of people watching.
Using only the finest and most authentic Persian ingredients, the food is as phenomenal as ever. To whet your appetite, there are a variety of Persian style entrees, lamb shanks, marinated lamb cutlets, chicken skewers and kebabs, and seriously why have abs when you can have kebabs? There are plenty of vegetarian, vegan and gluten free options too, plus the likes of baklava and saffron ice cream sandwiches to keep the sweet tooths smiling.
The unmissable signature dish is Gardan, which is slow-cooked lamb neck cooked in a unique turmeric sauce and caramelised onion Served with Baghali Polo (green rice mixed with broad beans and dill), it’s an Iranian party in your mouth. Pair it with either the signature cocktail, Persian Love (vodka, cherry liqueur, cranberry juice, mixed berries, lemonade and Persian fairy floss), or the non-boozy Persian Gold made in house with saffron, rose water, sophia seeds and honey, and you’ll understand why Shiraz has more awards than you can poke a pistachio at.
Catering to couples and families, it’s also a great choice for a large group thanks to its central location and easy access to parking. They have numerous food and drink packages, available to individuals and corporates too, so keep this one in mind for those Christmas parties!
Plus, there is a new jam-packed schedule of events offering a different drawcard for each day/night of the week, including live music every Friday and Saturday night. Our fave has to be Tight Tuesday (extra points awarded for the name), as diners who spend $99 or more will score a complimentary mezze platter. Yes please!
So do yourself a favour with flavour and head to Shiraz for the best Persian on the Coast (with the gongs to prove it), and a look at the brandnew outdoor terrace. You’ll quickly realise why it’s been in the top 1% of Trip Advisor reviews Australia-wide for nine years running, and make it your new local haunt.

WE’VE FOUND THE GOLD COAST’S BEST KEPT DISTILLERY SECRET
Meet the intoxicatingly good Winchester Distillery.
Who doesn’t love a secret?! Even those secrets you swear you won’t tell anyone else, but your bestie doesn’t count. So we are here to let you in on one, as you’re our besties…
You ready? Ok well, we think we found the Gold Coast’s best kept secret! It’s named The Winchester Distillery, and guys, we’re Big Kev excited about this! So strap in for the DL on this hidden distillery that produces phenomenal small-batch artisanal liquors and liqueurs.
Nailing the industrial vibe with style, The Winchester Distillery has to be found to be believed. A beyond cool destination for your next Friday knockoffs, friend catch-up for a gin-wag, or private function as they have capacity for up to 120 guests. But perhaps the best thing about this hidden beauty is the distillery itself only produces 60-120 bottles per run. Meaning, their spirits are all made by hand and for the super passionate team, it’s certainly a labour of love.
They use local, fresh (or frozen in off-peak seasons) ingredients to create real colours and flavours, unlike the majority of distilleries who simply add food colouring. This makes each and every run truly unique, as the taste
and hue will be slightly different every time. And we are all about this authentic approach! No joke, we guarantee you can actually taste the difference. Just try their Pink Gin; which is bursting with refreshingly sweet berry flavours. No added flavouring or colouring here folks! #gingoals.
Another reason to book an event or tasting here is that their liquor and liqueurs are not available to be purchased anywhere else. These masters of their craft produce their own ethanol and tinctures, with not a single drop sourced from another supplier. This is a rarity and not only is it super impressive, but the quality of their spirits is positively top-shelf because of it.
The fit-out is rich in moody tones and textures, with the bar taking centre stage with its charcoal veejay panelled back and corrugated iron front. There’s a wooden barn door feature, brass fixtures, and industrialstyle lighting casting just the right amount of light where it matters. Like highlighting quirky quotes on the dark walls like “Shut up liver, you’re fine”…. aaaand maybe don’t repeat
26 | insidegoldcoast.com.au
EAT + DRINK
that to your GP. Another endearing oddity is the “Welcome to the Freak Show” wall feature, complete with red drawn curtains, and if this doesn’t get mileage on every patron’s social feeds, we don’t know what will.
Something else totally Instaworthy is the unique cocktails and not gonna lie, it’s hard to pick a fave coz they’re all shoutout-worthy. An absolute MUST is the Espresso Chestini, a rich and foamy mocha fusion that blends aromatic coffee crema with sweet Chester’s chocolate and smooth Chester’s FUG 28 Liqueurs. Not only is it delicious, but it’s served up with an epic twist and no, this is not just a figure of speech, it literally has a twist effect created with cocoa powder on the top, and seriously you NEED to see it. It’s magic-al.
Then, freshen things up with a Passionfruit Moijito, a fruity and minty citrus crush infused with zesty sweet passionfruit pulp on a Chester’s White Rum base. Or, if you’re a fan of a shot and look when in Rome…, the Upsidedown Raspberry Cheesecake will have you lining up for seconds and thirds…and we need to re-read that liver quote right about now. Speaking of organs, if you’re feeling peckish, no worries –just dial in some Uber Eats, kick back and order another round!
So next time you and your pals are craving a visit to a watering hole that has a hidden bar feel or planning a private party (that hasn’t been done to death by every Tom, Dick and Harry), no need for a ‘spirited’ debate. Trust your gintuition and book in a day or night to remember at The Winchester Distillery. Where: It’s a secret! All we can say, is it’s in Arundel. Enquire directly to find out where!
When: Available 7 days for bookings only.

OKAZU, YOU’RE ON A ROLL
Where traditional Japanese flavours meet the modern palette.
Are you a sucker for sushi? Partial to a poke bowl, or simply nuts for noodles? Do you like your Japanese cuisine infused with the traditional essence of authentic flavours and culture? And do you go ape for artfully designed dishes that nourish both body and soul. If the answer is yes to any of the above, we have a public service announcement for you! There are not one but two places which tick these boxes, sharing the same name, postcode, and Executive Chef extraordinaire. We’re of course referring to Okazu, our favourite Japanese restaurant in the tuna-verse.
Okazu is loved the GC over for its highquality, healthy food, and family friendly vibe. With origins hailing from traditional Japanese street food, you’ll love the way they roll. Offering takeaway, some indoor dining, and more authentic Japanese flavour that you can poke a chopstick at, it’s no surprise that the OG Mermaid Beach Okazu gained a sibling. A hop skip and a jump away at Markeri Street, Mermaid Waters the food, feels, and friendly service at the second Okazu are equally on-point.
Executive Chef Mumma Michie hails from Osaka and friends, she is the real deal. Drawing from generations of handed-down cooking techniques and recipes, she delicately infuses the traditional essence of Japanese cuisine and culture into her beautifully handcrafted dishes. You can literally taste the expertise and passion, and we want to order everything on the menu.

EAT + DRINK
Speaking of, curious to learn more about the Osaka brand’s crowd-pleasing menu? Upon sampling Okazu’s sushi sorcery, it’s painfully clear that our home-made avocado maki just reached new levels of underwhelming. Whipping up a variety of perfectly executed traditional sushi favourites, we’re mad for the Raw Salmon and Avocodo Roll, Japanese BBQ Crispy Chicken, Teriyaki Calamari and Mixed Vegetable Tempura
Another local’s fave is the Poke Bowl and if you think you’ve had the best elsewhere, sorry, you’re wrong. With tuna, salmon, edamame, brown rice, cabbage, ginger, crispy shallots, wakame, chilli, soy sauce, cucumber and sesame mayo, it’s guaranteed to please even the most particular Poke punter.
You’ll also find a selection of other Japanese bowls, noodles, sides and more, plus Okonomiyaki, known as Japanese soul food. These healthy cabbage-based pancakes can be made with either seafood, teriyaki chicken, teriyaki beef, or vegetables and Okazu’s are as memorable as they are morish.
Also brimming with contemporary authenticity is the fit-out of both venues. At the OG, you don’t know where to look first; the lengthy mural featuring an eye-catching graphic of a gorgeous Japanese lady fan-inhand, or the wall opposite with super cute ‘you make miso happy’ neon sign. Actually no, it’s the sushi display front and centre, because that big cabinet gets us gooood every.single.time. Offset by moody polished floors and a navyblue brick counter, it’s just goals.
At the Mermaid Waters Okazu, there’s more of a grab-and-go vibe. With a similar industrialesque design, it’s the perfect option for those time-poor days when you’re running behind schedule aka every day. Another swoon-worthy display of sushi greets you and seriously, so many rolls, so little time.
So when the mood strikes you next for a high quality Japanese food fix, think Okazu – the Gold Coast’s ‘roll’ model for traditional Japanese eats with a modern flare.

THE NEW MODERN ASIAN BUFFET THAT’S SO FLY!
Nothing about Madame Za’s sophisticated buffet is plane.
Come on admit it – we all adore a buffet, our love running so deep that lining up from Mermaid to Miami for endless potato skins, pasta and soft serve at Sizzler was a 90s ritual #RipCheeseBread. Thankfully, buffets have come a loooong way since yesteryear, as demonstrated by local modern Asian eats sensation, Madame Za. Ditching the a-la-carte dinner menu for a fancy buffet experience, this taste-bud-titillator not only offers a fresh and flavoursome spread, but an elegant dining experience to boot. This means no more agonising over which delectable dish to order, and we won’t judge if the number of times you refill your plate hits double digits coz #same.
Located next to the Gold Coast Airport terminal at Rydges Hotel and a short stroll from Kirra Beach, Madame Za has acquired quite the loyal following and duh, of course she has. Serving up authentic traditional flavours of Asian cuisine spiked with a modern twist, the food is all that and a bag of ch...opsticks.
A destination in its own right, if you haven’t yet experienced Madame Za’s culinary sorcery, the new buffet is the perfect excuse to remedy this. Offering indoor and outdoor dining, there is also a private room available for small
groups which yay, we now know where we’re going for our next bday soiree. Or if you’re more of a breakfast enthusiast, you’re in luck as there’s also a brekkie buffet so delicious and satisfying, there’ll be no need for lunch… or dinner.
Touting a buffet experience that tastes like no other, we’re pleased to confirm that there’s no sign of Pinocchio here. This certainly comes as no surprise as Head Chef Joel Byant is still in the driver’s seat, the ideal custodian of such an epic eats experience. Joel knows a thing or two about refined, fresh and flavour-rich cuisine, with a resume including

EAT + DRINK
Seaduction in Surfers Paradise, Oskars on Burleigh and Songbirds Rainforest Retreat on Mt Tamborine. His creations at Madame Za encapsulate the bold flavour of Asian street food, packing a punch of flavour with each and every bite. You could start your journey with crunchy spring rolls, followed by insanely good Asian soups and an epic salad bar. Leave room for a delectable range of exotic curries from India to Thailand and complete your feast with all your favourite authentic stirfries (featuring seafood on weekends).
Your peepers are also in for a treat, firstly because the food looks as sublime as it tastes and secondly, the fit out is truly a sight to behold. Tasteful and subtle décor marries modern accents and traditional Asian culture with class and finesse. Everything from the stunning wall mural of Madame herself, to the striking ceiling design adorned with greenery and Chinese flowers oozes effortless sophistication. The bar area is equally ambient, summonsing you to settle in for a pre or post dinner cocktail, and LBH, it’s not exactly a hard sell.
So for the famished foodies, peckish pals, date night diners, or salivating small groups, Madame Za and her mouth-watering new buffet are the true definition of a triple threat; tasteful, tasty and #trending.
Book your festive season celebration or next night out at MadamZa!

DOKO DEMO V’S NEW DIGS WILL MAKE YOUR HEART BEET!
Eating meat is so yesterday. Plant-based is way more v-edgy.
Vegetarians and vegans, guess who’s back? Back again? Nope not Shady, but Doko Demo V and yep, tell a friend (or a good spud-ie) because the new digs are positively radishing! Serving up multicultural vegan cuisine like a boss, we’ve been rooting for Doko Demo V 2.0 to be as unbeetable as the original noshery … and we’re pea-sed to confirm it’s even better! With not mushroom for improvement to begin with, they’ve come back like a kale-force wind and yes, these vegan puns are super corny.
Once sitting pretty in Miami, passionate owners Jared Peck and Vian made the big decision to shut up shop and relocate their booming business to escape ongoing tram constructions. Recently reopening in West Burleigh, all we can say is Miami: 0, Burleigh: 1, as this plant-based pearler is a winner winner (faux) chicken dinner!
Even if you’re a carnivore from way back, we recommend you live on the veg and try this place because you’d never know meat had been given the flick. The flavours – and meal presentation – are tofu-king good.
Jared completed his apprenticeship at
Palazzo Versace, and has worked in many international hotels and restaurants, Vian’s family own vegan restaurants in Taiwan for over twenty years, combined they have created something exceptional. This shows in the presentation of their food and venue.
Vian has nailed the interior design and along with her builder Greg, has created the perfect look and feel for this Bali-vibing breath of fresh air. Step inside and you’re instantly drawn to an authentic eye-catching bamboo bar with thatched roofing. There’s a vine-covered white vertical veejay wall housing the kitchen with a
32 | insidegoldcoast.com.au

cool “Meatless doesn’t mean tasteless” aqua neon sign, and we’ll cheers to that.
There’s plenty of gorgeous greenery, festoon lighting, and a mash-up of wooden booths, funky tree slab tables, and old-school chunky timber tables and chairs. Accommodating 70 people, dining extends to an undercover outdoor area with plenty more seating.
Now the most stressful decision you’ll face is do I go for breakfast, lunch or dinner because both menus will take you to your hap-pea place. For the most important meal of the day, we couldn’t go past the Taro Pancake Stack with fresh fruit salad, vanilla ice cream and maple which we might also order for lunch, because it’s an all-day breakky menu! And hey, we can go all sorts of non-conventional here because the lunch menu is also available from 7am, and this is like the exponentially levelled-up, meatless version of a post Melba’s Maccas hit at sunrise! We’ve picked the Works Burger with cheese, onion, lettuce, egg, tomato, beetroot, onion, pineapple, sriracha mayo, and bbq sauce on a charcoal bun with a side of Potato Fries. I can’t believe it’s not butter meat!
For dinner, how about an entrée of Pan-Fried Dumplings with special soy dipping sauce and some BBQ Pork Buns peas and thank you? Then, choose from Burgers, Wraps, Pizza, Pasta and a tasty selection of other plantbased pleasers. The Korean Chicken Salad is a top seller and it’s freaking good. The No Beef Lasagne with garden salad goes down a treat, as does the Unreal Scallopini with garden vegetables, mash potato, brandy, and mushroom cream sauce. And for something sweet, we’re ordering the Pot Plant Ice Cream because it combines our two favourite things and srsly, it would be rude not to.
Cocktails always deserve a shout-out, especially the Dokodemo with watermelon juice, vodka and mint but if it’s too early for booze (does anyone else hear crickets?), they do a mean coffee, shake, tea, juice and Hemp Kombucha. Yep it’s official – we’ve rediscovered our culinary soil mate #EatBeansNotBeings.

SOFIA’S GOES FROM A 10 TO A 10,000,000
Honey, I’m Rome! The new Sofia’s has arrived
It’s no secret that The Oasis Shopping Centre houses some stellar eateries, and leading the pack is the new look coastal European stunner, Sofia’s Restaurant & Bar. Now a hop, skip and a jump up the road from its original spot, it’s bigger and more beautiful than ever. Everything about this luxe Mediterranean people pleaser is perfectly executed, from the on-fleek new fit-out, to the carefully curated menu championing simple, delicious food. In fact, even the plates were imported from Italy, handmade and hand painted to order and yeah, this makes our Ikea plates at home look like the poor cousins that they are.
Owner Henry Hunt has stayed true to his Euro chic roots, keeping just the right amount of refined Mediterranean feels mixed with a very fresh and current aesthetic. Engaging Bridgette Ford for the interior design and Shopfit & Co. to manage the build, the result is everything we’d hoped for…and more.
The duck egg blue, white and gold ‘Sofia’s’ entry station still stands loud and proud out front of the undercover dining area, flanked by two beautiful fringed umbrellas in the same colour palette. There are marble tables with coastal wood and white hued chairs leading
into the showstopping inside, boasting elegant booths, more tables and chairs, and THAT BAR. Yes, it deserves upper case. The benchtop surface is a stunning juxtaposition of grey, black and white terrazzo triangle slabs, set alongside equally lush peach, black and white triangle slabs. Adorning the bar back and restaurant wall, you’ll see statement wide archway shelves housing an iconic selection of spirits and srsly, arches get us every.single.time. Add a healthy dose of overhanging greenery and capacity for 100 people and voila, it’s the perfect destination for your next lunch, dinner, or private function.
Chef Dan Paulman cooks up handmade pastas, woodfired bread (#CarbsOnCarbs), fresh seafood, and beautiful sharing plates galore.
34 | insidegoldcoast.com.au
EAT + DRINK
To get into the nitty gritty, let’s go with a starter of Sofia’s famous house-made bread with extra virgin olive oil, oregano and salt, and perhaps a Baked Eggplant stuffed with mascarpone and parmesan. But wait, we just spotted the long list of cheese and salumi varieties to share and we’re so grabbing a Gorgonzola and a Truffle Salami #idie.
Moving on to the main event and the signature dish, Sofia’s Cacio e Peppe with linguine, cream, cracked pepper, sea salt, served at the table in a 40kg Parmesan wheel aged for 2.5yrs is a must! It serves two so bring your love, your besty, or just a really big appetite and decimate the lot. This will go nicely with a Heirloom Tomato Salad with fresh basil, truffle and balsamic reduction and whaddaya know, that’s on the menu too! If you’d prefer something for the grill, may we draw your attention to the Fish of the Day served with saffron broth, clams and muscles, with a side of Shoestring Fries garnished simply with oregano and sea salt. That’s amore alright.
Now let’s talk cocktails and thank God we hear you all say. They do a sensational Spicy Margarita and avid Inside Gold Coast readers will know we’re rather partial to one of these so when we say it’s good, it’s fricken good. Sofia’s make theirs with bird’s eye chilli infused Olmeca Altos tequila, Cointreau, fresh lime juice, passionfruit puree and house made syrup and trust us, catch an Uber *orders several more*.
Speaking of Ubers, the epic mile-long wine list is another reason to resign from DD duty. They stock over 200 labels of wine and despite being mildly overwhelming for the indecisive, even the fussiest grape juice drinker will be on cloud wine.
So there you have it. The new Sofia’s certainly gets our tick of approval, and we look forward to saying “salute” (on repeat) at THAT.BAR too many times over the coming months.

Which comes first – those you love, or those you want? Seeing Other People follows sisters Eleanor and Charlie as they try to navigate a post-pandemic Sydney. After being in and out of lockdowns, both of their lives are changing and shifting in unpredictable ways.
Charlie has raw, unparalleled talent and when she graduates from Sydney’s most prestigious drama school, she is the only one of her cohort to sign on with an agency and land a main role. Eleanor and Mark meet in their final semester of university, after sharing long coffee breaks and prolonged glances in the library, they find themselves entering the next phase of their lives together. Two years later, lockdown after lockdown and Sydney is returning to a sense of normalcy. Mark and Eleanor have just broken up, though Eleanor is having trouble sharing this news with her sister. After her play was cancelled through the pandemic and countless auditions have ended the same way, Charlie finally steps foot on stage again. Charlie and Eleanor are pushed beyond their limits and their relationship is stretched to breaking point.
Author Diana Reid writes with wit and sharp observation and this darkly funny story is perfect for fans of Sally Rooney and Jessie Tu.
BOOK: Seeing Other People by Diana Reid RRP $32.99.

Book recommendation by Bookface’s Store Manager Gina Martin.
What a ride the past two years has been. Chardonnay has been on a journey for the past twenty years. From different winemaking styles and flavour characters, initially being too oaky and ripe, then moving to a crisp and lean style. Seems it’s found its spot back to ‘normality’, a great balance with fruit, oak and texture.
Lethbridge ‘Ooh La La’ Chardonnay 2021 is a beautifully clean, pure nose of ripe melon, lemon zest, white peach and toast, with traces of baked apple and shortbread.
It has a ovely freshness in the mouth and excellent cleansing acidity with notes of pear, apple and lime with a beautiful soft, creamy finish.

REVIEWS
There’s an undercurrent of frantic excitement at this time of year as the countdown to summer holidays and the festive season kicks off.
It’s a time to enjoy some overdue catch ups with friends and family and indulge in much feasting and gift-giving before 2022 officially runs out.
I particularly look forward to seeing my siblings – one of whom has made the change to a vegan diet and lifestyle, the other not far behind. They’ve inspired me to create some vegan chocolates which are as delicious as other chocolates but without any dairy ingredients.
The fillings for the vegan dark chocolate pralines include a dreamy no-dairy salted caramel, a slightly exotic tahini and black sesame, hazelnut and a coconut and raspberry.
Coconut and raspberry is a particular favorite with its fruity burst of flavour and the distinctive texture of coconut hinting at tropical beach holidays. One to indulge, gift or share this summer.
