Ahhh Currumbin Valley. The place where the phrase “how’s the serenity” was coined, and we just made that up. It never fails to fill our cup with all things green, greener, and greenest and LBH – is so much more appealing than a shot of spirulina #gag. Being part of a conservation area, naturally businesses shaped by simplicity and sustainability are drawn to this stunning neck of the woods. Embracing the ecofriendly philosophy with gusto, Pasture & Co (2.0) is a must-visit family-friendly café ticking all the boxes; d-lish healthy eats, prime location, tranquillity (but with a vibe), friendly service, and a partridge in a an environmental conscience. And probs a partridge in a pear tree too coz overachiever much?!

Using local, organic and sustainably sourced ingredients, Pasture & Co practices what it preaches. Operating as self-sufficiently as possible, it’s doing its bit to inspire others to reduce their footprint and make more sustainable choices. Anything but cactus, this sentiment is #trending and giving the likes of Pasture & Co the ‘green’ light and momentum to serve food based on nurturing both people and the planet.

The nosh here is amazing and will suit e.v.e.r.y.o.n.e regardless of dietary preferences and beliefs. We’re talking vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free, and paleo fare. Even omnivores are catered for and side note; we had to google it too, learning that the omnivore lands somewhere between the herbivore and carnivore. It’s not just the savoury stuff either, with yummy vegan, raw and gluten-free sweets that won’t make you feel meh.

Although you can’t go wrong, let’s hero a couple of solid ten-outta-tens. Firstly, the Potato and Zucchini Rosti will do things to your tastebuds that warrant a non-PG rating,

and even we’re even sold by our own pitch here. Similarly, the Avocado and Heirloom Tomatoes with macadamia nut butter is legicious (legit delicious), and not just because anything involving a macadamia nut is the duck’s, well, you know what.

Moving along to beverages, have a go of the organic fair-trade coffee. If you’re channelling something cold, don’t hesitate to order the Mermaid Smoothie. What’s in a Mermaid Smoothie you ask? We’ll let you discover that for yourself and thank us later #TeaseIntentional.

Now let’s talk fit out and feels because Pasture & Co (and gorgeous founder Dani Riley) deserve a green ribbon in both departments. For starters, the lush position surrounded by endless foliage and cheeky wildlife creates instant zen. The space sprawls seamlessly from inside to outside and we challenge you to leave with anything other than a relaxed mind – and happy tummy. Think simple and recycled, rich brown rattan, timber trimmings, and a stunning lighting feature which instantly grabs you (in an entirely non creepy way). Then there’s the plush leather couch, fireplace, fiddle trees and other gorgeous greenery and drumroll; the take-mybreath-awayyyyyyy views #TopGun4Eva.

Oh, and a Nutella Cronut because LBH life’s just better with cronuts.

Now let’s talk pizza and our vote goes to the Prosciutto and Rocket, with San Daniel prosciutto, Byron Bay buffalo mozzarella, parmesan, cherry tomatoes, baby pear and rocket. Or we could be swayed in the direction of the Roasted Vegetable Pizza with pumpkin, mixed assorted greens, Persian Feta, and roasted pine nuts

If you’re a tapas devotee but totally indecisive and #CanRelate, its gotta be the BLND. Tasting Board. Think wagyu slider, soft shell Moreton Bay bug, sticky pork bao bun, mushroom arancini, salt and pepper squid, and sweet potato fries with roasted garlic aioli and cue the #foodgasm.

Who can say no to a Rueben and certainly not us, or a Moroccan Pesto Chicken Toastie #TotallyEggstra. Otherwise you can sink your teeth into a wrap, smoothie bowl, vegan biscoff crumpet, taco bowl and we could srly taco-bout these all day.

The crowd favourite beverage is undoubtedly the Monkey Madness Smoothie, AKA the holy grail of smoothies, with cocoa, peanut butter, banana, and coconut water. Or perhaps the Sahara Sunset is more your jam, with a blend of creamy mango, banana, coconut milk and coconut water finished with a berry drizzle

Finally, you may be wondering where the name Rafiki came from? It’s Swahili for friend and that’s exactly what this place is – your friendly café by the sea.

Authentic Greek nosh, get in our bellies!

Fancy a trip to Greece? Of course you do, but put your passport away coz we’re not about to go full Oprah #soz. We are, however, here to pass on some very valuable intel – particularly for those partial to a gutsy Greek nosh up.

The Coast houses its fair share of southeastern Euro eats spots, but if you’re a genuine Greek food enthusiast, it’s all about Xenia … and we don’t mean the Warrior Princess coz there’s a sneaky ‘i’ in there for a start. We’re talking about the new showstopping Xenia Grill restaurant in Main Beach, loaded with more Greeky goodness than you can poke a souvlaki skewer at.

Casuarina and Cooly residents have been privy to the Xenia Grill experience for several years and finally, it’s the northerners’ turn. Like its siblings, the Main Beach noshery dishes out plate-smashingly good times and given the word Xenia is Greek for hospitality, it certainly delivers on that front too.

The mouthwatering menu is inspired by Kastellorizo Island, a small Greek island near the Turkish coast. Serving truly authentic, traditional cuisine and Grecian inspired killer cocktails, founders Kate and Dino

Georgakopoulos are proud partners in life and the workplace, proving that you can mix business and pleasure.

Delivering the ultimate Greek experience outside of actual Greece, their lip-smacking recipes hail from Dino’s family kitchen. In fact, they have created an environment where customers feel like they’re part of “the family” with a plethora of delicious food, laughs and good times to share. Plus, they believe “a life without feasts is like a long road without taverns” and this speaks to us on so many levels.

Appointing Space Cubed Design Studio for the Greek Islands inspired interior and Matt Holt Building and Construction for the build, the result is a modern classic. With a tasteful blue and white colour scheme, onfleek pendant and festoon lighting, vertical VJ panels, contemporary arch features, and a splash of foliage, it gives a nod to its traditional homage but with a very ‘now’ aesthetic.

Accommodating 70 people, you can dine at the indoors banquet style seating or in the

outdoor undercover area. A special shout out must go to the loud and proud “Eat, Drink, Love, Greek” wall feature and quite frankly, we’ve never heard better advice.

With Executive Chef and owner Dino Georgakopoulos and Group Head Chef Dileep Palouse in full command of the kitchen, you are in spectacularly competent hands. If you have ever sat down at a Greek family’s table you will know they enjoy a feast to share. Xenia is no different. Their Mazi banquet is a crowd favourite and features, the signature dish Arni Sto Fourno, sovereign lamb shoulder with lemon potatoes, kale and potato crisps, and tzatziki. If something a little smaller to start tickles your fancy, or you’d like to order some small mezze to share, look no further than the Oktapodi. This local chargrilled octopus with fava and toursi is as Greek as it gets and so (tenta)cool.

Stopping by for lunch? The trusty souvlaki is spectacular! Lamb, chicken, pork or vegan option with revithopites is everything we want from our Souv and more, as is the Baklava for dessert with filo, almonds and walnuts, citrus syrup, and kataifi, served with ice cream. All made onsite with the utmost of Greek Love!

For refreshments, we strongly recommend their most popular signature cocktail, the Mastiha Sours with Greek Mastiha, grapefruit, lemon, and aquafaba. If you’re feeling more like a classic, a Coconut Margarita will guarantee you a great time.

There is also a selection of quality Greek wines, beers and spirits, plus mocktails and other non-alcoholic drinks for those who had a big one the night before.

Now if you’re into Wings, the seven flavours to choose from and options of 6, 12 or 18 wings will have your head in a spin, we can’t go past the Spicy Buffalo with celery sticks and a side of Bleu cheese dressing, again, sharing is optional. But you can be one of the first to try the Signature Whiskey Glaze Single Stack Burger. This grass-fed beef patty basted with signature Jack Daniel’s glaze, topped with melted American-style cheese, lettuce, tomato, red onion, pickles and roasted garlic aioli is a taste sensation, and the one bun for us. TGI’s of course uses quality local produce and all menu items are prepared daily and cooked to order, so now you know why it always tastes so good! Pair your meal with some innovative cocktails overlooking the big blue and LBH, they had us at whisky glaze.

This nutritionrich, environmentally conscious, and highly convenient power couple are changing up the GC food game one bite (or sip) at a time.

Let’s start with Urban Eatery & Café, which offers a healthy balance of sustainable, delicious, and freshly prepped eats and ingredients. Months of researching overseas eateries and the latest eating trends culminated in an exciting menu that is nourishing and packed with flavour. Everything Urban does aligns with their ‘unify, rejuvenate, balance, authentic and natural’ philosophy

Boasting a menu which is completely gluten and dairy free, everyone can o-fishally enjoy their seafood safely. Like next door, Urban’s owners executed the in-house design along with builder Keith Hundle from Constructure, nailing a fresh, modern, and easy vibe to match their nosh. Dine inside on the gorgeous mosaic tables, take in the fresh air and sea breeze outside, or grab-and-go, perhaps over to the big blue coz LBH, fish and chips always taste better on the beach.

The Chef and his team tick all the right boxes with an epic fresh and cooked seafood menu. How about a Barra Burger or some grilled coral trout, cassava wedges, and a sweet potato scallop coz #MoreTatersLessHaters. We also recommend signature dishes like the Snapper Pie and Spicy Grilled Prawn Salad, and why not throw in some fresh Tasmanian oysters or a fresh bucket of Trawler Prawns for good measure. Where have you ‘bean’ all our lives Cruize Espresso?

Chirn Park is kinda like the south of the north and yes, this is confusing. To clarify, it’s located on the GC’s northside, but has many traits of the uber trendy southern ‘burbs. One particularly noteworthy mention must go to the Musgrave Avenue/Brooke Street precinct, abuzz with overflowing super cool cafes. Dig a little deeper and you’ll find that none are more inviting, beautifully decked out or popular with locals and non-locals alike than the pretty-as-a-picture Cruize Espresso.

Cruize is nestled amongst established leafy greenery, offering laid-back, Modern Australian alfresco and indoor dining, as well as takeaway. Overflowing with soft, coastal feminine charm (equally irresistible to the man folk), we couldn’t possibly fall harder for this place – even if brunch was served by a shirtless Jason Momoa. The biz child of gorgeous (inside and out) besties Sarah Hill and Angela Jordan, these clued-up ladies know a thing or two about cafes. With four previous café ventures under their belt, they wanted to create a home away from home. And Cruize, without a shadow of a doubt, is precisely that.

Designing and executing the build in-house, it’s the Margot Robbie of cafes. It effortlessly blends cool-girl vibes with down-to-earth (redonkulously pretty) girl next-door feels and this is no mean feat. White vertical veejay walls adorned with collections of lust-worthy Jai Vasicek tiles make us swoon, as does the instafamous pink neon “I love you a latte” sign. And side note, Cruize was one of the first cafés we can think of to debut a neon sign, so kudos for the foresight #trendsetters.

The powder pink La Marzocco machine just makes us happy, particularly when it ‘chirns’ out Merlot coffees #BigBigEnergy. Lush foliage hugs the outdoor space creating a relaxing tropical Seminyak-esk ambience, and the pops of greenery inside complement, well, everything. Even the girls’ uniforms are a vibe, with denim overalls sporting a pink ‘Cruize’ stamp and srsly, we would actually wear these. It also helps that the ladies rocking said cute overalls are so nice that we want to be friends with them.

On to the nosh, there is something to suit every taste including gluten free, vegetarian and vegan fare. Whether it’s breakfast, brunch

or lunch, Head Chef Jodie Adams never misses a beat. The signature Acai bowls are a solid ten, and we can’t resist the PB Acai Bowl which is acai blended with banana, topped with peanut butter, cocoa nibs, granola, summer berries, coconut, honey and passionfruit. Another dish which sells like hot cakes is The Blue Swimmer Crab Eggs Benedict with blue swimmer crab, poached eggs, nori hollandaise, and citrus wilted spinach, topped with salmon pearls on an English muffin. Yep, we’re drooling too. Moving to the lunch menu, the Calamari and Watermelon Salad sparks our interest, served with Persian feta, mixed leafy greens, cucumber, avocado, red onion and a light red wine vinaigrette

Pair your meal with one of their famous coffees or legendary smoothies and we have a peas and carrots sitch. The Brass Monkey is a best seller, with banana, berries, chocolate protein powder, honey, yoghurt and almond milk. Fresh fruit juices are also in high demand, and those with a sore throat can’t go past the Sore Throat…and even if your throat is a-okay, the same applies. A simple combo of orange, lemon and ginger never fails and is as palettepleasing as it is soothing. And finally, Cruize is licensed so a cheeky cocktail at lunch is always an (extremely popular) option.

Serving up nothing but smiles, delicious food, coffee and other sips (plus plenty of parking), the message is clear. In the words of Gwyneth, baby let’s cruise…to Chirn Park’s Cruize.

THE GLASS IS HALF FULL AT VARSITY’S NEW TAPHOUSE

With a name like Two Mates Taphouse, you just know the place is going to be a big, warm, amber ale-infused hug. And you’d be bang on the money.

The passion project of Lismore lads Grant Smith and Andrew Newton, the Two Mates Taphouse story is quite the, well, story. These beer and good time vibing larrakins started their taphouse tale in their hometown, opening the popular Lismore enterprise. A hit with folk from all over the Northern Rivers region, they began to chew the fat about expanding their empire and launching a second Two Mates on the Gold Coast. Then something completely unforeseen happened,

altering the course of their journey in ways they never imagined possible.

Like so many people in their ‘hood, they copped the full wrath of the Lismore floods, which completely ravaged their booming business. Being 11 metres above the river, they thought the taphouse was safe as houses. It wasn’t…

The unwavering support from the community saw locals rally around the gents, dedicating six months to help clean every last waterlogged inch of their favourite watering hole. They say every cloud has a silver lining and this particular (very dark) cloud had two. Firstly, it shone the spotlight on true mateship, the foundation of their business and secondly, it gave them a push (more like a shove really) to get cracking on their second taphouse. After securing the prime location in Varsity Parade, fast forward to present day and now us Gold Coasters can experience the Two Mates ‘live,

Like their ‘first born’ taphouse, the Varsity site was born from a love of families and friendship.
