Attractions & Activities

Attractions & Activities There is no comparison to the Gold Coast’s choice of activities and experiences that continue to evolve every day. It is an offering which has been built over generations and will hold the city well into the future. Choose your own adventure in Australia’s adventure playground. Many travellers think they know what to expect on Australia’s Gold Coast; the brilliant beaches, the Surfers Paradise nightlife and dozens of theme parks. But there’s much more to explore than the traditional travel guides are willing to admit. Enjoying an ideal year round climate and an amazing variety of natural landscapes, including 70 kilometres of famous beach and 100,000 hectares of world heritage-listed rainforest, the region has been attracting visitors since first settlement.

After all that daytime adventure, you may just want to relax in your room listening to the waves wash upon the shore. Or experience the Gold Coast nightlife

as the city’s bars, clubs, restaurants and attractions draw locals and visitors out into the sparkling night. It’s big-city nightlife 365 nights a year, but if you want something more there is always a touring international act or football game or music festival or the like happening so you can join the carnival when events arrives in town. It’s easy to see why a Gold Coast holiday is the popular choice.

W e s t Bu rleigh Rd

There are more attractions on the Gold Coast than any other city in the southern hemisphere. So if you want anything in the way of theme parks or indigenous kayak tours, wreck diving or bungee jumping, swimming with the sharks or cuddling a koala; you can do it on the Gold Coast and it is all within 40 minutes drive.

Attractions & Activities 3. COOMBABAH LAKELANDS Native wildlife is in abundance in this 1200-hectares of wetland, eucalypt forest, salt marsh and mangrove swamp habitat. Kangaroos laze around as you walk by and don’t forget to keep an eye out for koalas lounging in the trees above you. The area is ideal for short walks, bird watching, animal spotting, plant identification and an opportunity to appreciate an ecologically significant area. Remember to pack insect repellent and there’s no toilet facilities, so be prepared to hold!

FREE OUTDOOR ADVENTURES FOR KIDS ON THE GOLD COAST If the kids are driving you up the wall with their never-ending supply of energy and noise, then why not take them to one of the many free parks, bush walks or picnic spots dotted across the Coast.

4. FEED LORIKEETS – CURRUMBIN WILDLIFE SANCTUARY Every day from 8am to 9.30am and 4pm to 5.30pm you can feed wild lorikeets for free at the entrance to Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary. It’s incredibly noisy and can be scary for little ones so just be mindful of this before you arrive. They will land on your shoulders, head and eat from specially made bowls of Lorikeet food that you can ask to hold. Bird numbers depend on temperature, rainfall and the presence of predatory birds, sometimes there’s a handful other times there’s hundreds. Author Emily Toxward – moregoldcoast.com.au

Not only does this expose them to new experiences but it’s a great way for them to burn off energy and get plenty of exercise. Here’s four top spots across the Gold Coast that will keep kids amused for hours! 1. HINZE DAM The gates are open from 6am to 6pm and it’s just a short drive from Nerang and there’s plenty of flat concrete for kids to bike, scooter or skateboard – they can even go across the dam which gives them a pretty cool view. Below the spill gates is a large picnic area with playgrounds, barbecues and toilet facilities. An onsite cafe has a range of treats as well as delicious coffee and ice-creams. Don’t forget to bring a jacket as it can get cool as the wind blows across the dam. 2. NATURAL BRIDGE This is a short 1km loop walk in the Springbrook National Park that kids will love. There are lots of bridges, birds and ancient trees on the way to the Natural Bridge, an unusual geological feature created over millions of years by water tumbling through the roof of a basalt cave. It is also home to an amazing colony of glow-worms that can be seen after sunset. There are toilet facilities and water bubblers which is convenient for the kids.

Cruising & Watersports

Cruising & Watersports It’s then no surprise that the Gold Coast lifestyle is mainly water based, as our waterways have so much to offer to the residents and visitors alike. The vast range of complementing waterways makes the city a haven of fun-filled pursuits with good times assured among the numerous aquatic attractions. The Broadwater caters to every on-water activity imaginable, where thrill seekers can choose from jetboating, parasailing, kite surfing, diving, jet-ski safaris, snorkelling, tall-ship cruising and yachting.

In addition to the Gold Coast’s famous beaches, it also boasts a spectacular network of waterways made up of five main rivers, numerous creeks, lakes, canals and the magnificent Broadwater. Some 480 kilometres of rivers and streams, as well as 774 hectares of lakes, dams and canals wind their way through the city’s landscape.

A learn-to-surf class guided by world champions is a must-do, as are paddling and kayaking explorations. Enjoy deep-sea fishing, marvel during a whale-watching tour, take in a guided cruise of the waterways or simply swim among the surf at some of the best beaches in the world (see page 4 for your closest location). You will find boat ramps and fishing platforms in most suburbs, waterfront parks and barbeque areas to enjoy with the family. Do not miss the walking tracks along most beaches and waterways to take in the beautiful scenery of the Gold Coast.

Cruising & Watersports

Whale watching on the Gold Coast provides a fantastic opportunity for onlookers to get up close and personal with the largest living mammals on Earth. The waters along the Gold Coast are commonly referred to as the Hump Back Highway with approximately 25,000 viewing opportunities during the annual migration up and down the coasts of Queensland. The advantage of having to travel just 10 minutes out to sea to witness these giants in their natural habitat, ensures a fun-filled couple of hours whale watching with plenty of time left in your day to appreciate the many other attractions of the Gold Coast. Running from June through to November, the Gold Coast boasts the longest whale watching season in the country. The whale watching season marks the migration of the Humpback Whale from Antarctica to warmer Queensland waters before they return with their newly born after covering a mammoth distance of 8,000kms during their amazing journey. During the Gold Coast whale watching season, visitors are given the rare opportunity to spot Humpback Whales, whale calves, dolphins, Killer Whales and ‘Migaloo’ the famous white Humpback, all in their natural habitat.

Dining & Entertainment

Chinese culture comes to town

The city’s newest destination, Chinatown has revitalised Southport (the Gold Coast’s CBD). While the world’s great Chinatowns, in cities such as San Francisco, New York, Vancouver and Sydney, grew organically in that crazy, commercial way of traditional Asian trading precincts, the Gold Coast’s unique version is a modern take on tradition. MODERN STYLE, RICH CULTURAL HERITAGE The focus may be modern, but Chinatown represents a culmination of the city’s Chinese connections that stretch back more than a century. The vision is more authentic artisan – silk embroidery, porcelain, jade and calligraphy – and less cheap Qipaos, chopsticks, fans and funny t-shirts. Imagine tree-lined boulevards more than ‘aromatic’ alleyways. Businessman Ted Fong was involved in early Gold Coast Chinese restaurants and businesses, established the Gold Coast Chinese Club, introduced dragon boat racing to Queensland in 1986, and first championed a Chinatown for the city in the 90’s. Fast forward 20 years and Chinatown’s time has come and with it the opportunity for visitor’s to experience modern Asian culture. Envisage modern Chinese with a cosmopolitan flavour and everyday retail services with quality, boutique offerings. Think food, of course – traditional fine Chinese dining and stylish, modern restaurant fit-outs, alongside funkier Asian-fusion outlets and fab street food stalls and fresh produce, in a vibrant market street atmosphere. Stage one streetscaping has been completed, with cultural embellishments and distinctive Paifangs (gateways) to be installed over time as the precinct evolves and business owners are supported to transition into Chinatown. Ted Fong arrived on the Gold Coast as a 20-year-old in the 1950’s, starting work at the iconic Cathay Café – an old house turned into a two-level restaurant that became something of a landmark on the highway at Surfers Paradise. He also operated a market garden, distributing produce throughout Southeast Queensland. Ted remembers visitors from Victoria returning year after year for holidays – restaurant staff knew them by name. Since introducing dragon boat racing to Queensland in 1986, Ted has gone on to lead teams in national and international competitions. The dragon boat regatta celebrates its 29th year on the Gold Coast in 2014.

There’s nothing quite like Chinatown at night as a feast for the senses – complete with colourful lanterns and those mouth-watering aromas.

The precinct will be crucial to stimulating the night economy – getting Southport pumping after dark, especially for events such as the Chinese Lunar New Year, Mid-Autumn Festival and Dragon Boat Festival as well as other multi-cultural celebrations. Chinatown promises to be a great place for drinks and cheap eats for Southport’s burgeoning workforce, and a destination for families to take in the colour and spectacle of drums and lion dances, kung fu masters and masked Chinese opera performers. A relaxed Sunday yum-cha is already a well-loved tradition for groups of families and friends at many of the city’s Chinese restaurants and will be a fixture in Chinatown. For the uninitiated, yum-cha is an amazing taste sensation of a variety of steamed dumplings and other delicacies served in bamboo baskets which are brought around on trolleys. Choosing is half the fun, one serving is never enough, and trying the chicken feet is a must for the adventurous. FENG SHUI BY DESIGN Gold Coast Chinatown will be a place of wealth, harvest, harmony and double happiness! The streetscape was designed following a full Feng Shui analysis and with a nod to traditional Chinese garden design. A $6 million budget is set to deliver quality design elements, yin and yang landscaping, and a flexible, vibrant space for festivals and events. Sydney Chinatown’s Feng Shui Master John Wong mapped the cultural and spiritual elements of the space and then four of the Gold Coast’s Sister Cities (Beihai and Zhuhai in China, and Taipei and Tainan in Taiwan) were invited to workshop the embellishments that will give the precinct its traditional character and unique appeal. The Gold Coast’s Sister City connections are set to bring something extra special to the project, which in turn will strengthen cultural and economic relations. Taipei, a long-standing sister city since 1982, held an international design competition to bring forward seven striking contemporary concepts representing prosperity for the Wealth Paifang, proposed to welcome people through the northern Davenport Street entrance. The streetscaping in Davenport and Young Streets defines the new precinct, where you can smell that distinctive Asian aroma and see the colours that bring it to life – traditional red along with blue and green to symbolise the harmony of ocean and hinterland, and gold of course – representing both our sunshine and golden beaches and wealth and good luck in Asian culture. You could say Chinatown is symbolic of the wealth – cultural and economic – that will define the future of Southport, and the Gold Coast itself. Author Kathy Kruger – moregoldcoast.com.au

Dining & Entertainment

Dining & Entertainment The Gold Coast has more than 500 cafes, restaurants and eateries. The multicultural nature of the Gold Coast has brought about a deliciously successful food and wine industry. Cultivating everything from soft-shell crabs and goat cheese to locally bred Wagyu beef and award-winning boutique wines. The Gold Coast is Queensland’s fastest wine-growing region and over 11 award winning wineries and numerous epicurean stopovers are located on the newly created Gold Coast Food and Wine Trail. The region’s produce is in high demand in international markets, particularly Southeast Asia and the USA, but travellers to the Gold Coast get the chance to sample every possible combination in the city’s vibrant restaurants. Having attracted prominent restaurateurs and operators from the southern capitals and around the world to progress this dynamic region, has ensured locations such as Southport, Main Beach, Surfers Paradise, Broadbeach, Coolangatta and the Hinterland remain highly regarded for their delectable choice of dining options.

Dining & Entertainment

Dining & Entertainment There is an endless variety of Australian and international styles complimented by the freshest of produce and delivered in some of Australia’s most inspired restaurant precincts. Tedder Avenue at Main Beach is a favourite for many locals with an abundance of always fabulous restaurants and chic little cafes. Surfers Paradise has undergone significant beautification and now offers a more cosmopolitan and friendly dining experience. Every possible style of restaurant and cafÊ can be found in between the boutiques and fashion stores. Broadbeach is now the cosmopolitan living centre on the Gold Coast. Many of the region’s hottest and most modern dining and drinking establishments have leapt into life along the streets and beachfront boulevards of this district. Outside the main metropolitan precincts is an assortment of attractive venues to arouse the gastronomic interest of every traveller.

Be adventurous and try kangaroo meat and a local drop high in the hinterland or the Moreton Bay Bugs and a native brew while sailing the calm Broadwater at sunset. Similarly, beachside cafes, snack bars and budget priced eateries are in abundance to ensure a taste to suit every style. That ambience of true bustling seaside culture, contrasted by a groovy night time buzz makes the Gold Coast a distinctively active area and a true party destination. Of course a sampling of the all-night entertainment will ensure an experience to remember with a plentiful supply of opportunities. Surfers Paradise defined by its after-dark assortment continues to redefine the parameters of choice. With the emergence of a fresh cultural scene Surfers Paradise is thriving as a diverse cafe, restaurant and nightlife hub. Broadbeach also has an expanding mall area which provides a 24-hour epicentre of activity. It is supported by an assortment of entertainment offerings which include the iconic Jupiters Hotel & Casino and its range of entertainment, gambling facilities and established bars and restaurants.

Gold Coast, coming of age as a creative community LIKE THE YOUNGEST IN A LARGE AND HIGH-ACHIEVING FAMILY, THE GOLD COAST IS MOVING FROM ‘CULTURAL CRINGE’ TO ‘CULTURAL CRED’ IN ITS OWN EXCITING WAY. WHEN OPERA AUSTRALIA’S FINAL NOTES OF MOZART’S MAGIC FLUTE RESONATED WITH APPRECIATIVE AUDIENCES AT GREENMOUNT BEACH IN MAY 14, THE GOLD COAST’S CULTURAL DEVELOPMENT HIT A HIGH NOTE TOO. The city’s Arts & Culture Strategic Advisor, renowned singer, festival director and arts administrator Robyn Archer AO talks of the Gold Coast needing ‘bold pieces of risk taking that completely myth bust’ – and there could be few ventures as anti-stereotypical as the ambitious Opera on the Beach. The Deputy Director of the Australia Arts Council sat on the sand amidst the audience – savouring a special moment in the cultural development of a city she admits she had little experience of, before being approached to guide its creative path towards the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games™. “A set of fresh eyes is good for a place,” Ms Archer reasons. “I have to admit that I had my own perceptions of ugly high-rise buildings along with media stereotypes of faded glory, bikies and schoolies. Plus I was a theme park virgin.” Having now experienced both the thrills and culture of a theme park, and the delights of the Gold Coast’s unique and evolving creative scene, Ms Archer sees nothing but opportunity. “Now I’ve driven the length and breadth of the city and come to appreciate the amazing canal system that is here, I think perhaps of Venetian opera,” she muses. “I also see opportunities for close links to Polynesian culture given the large Pacific Islander population on the Gold Coast.” “I’m like a gypsy, absorbing the different places I’ve lived and worked in, and for me it is about building on the rich, every-day culture on the Gold Coast in its broadest sense of food, wine, sport et cetera, and elevating the place of the arts within it.” INSPIRED BY LIFESTYLE – AN INNOVATIVE CULTURAL HERITAGE As Australia’s youngest city, the Gold Coast was born and grew in times quite different from its older capital city siblings, so it’s not surprising that its culture scene reflects a modernity and quirkiness that sets it apart. Uniting a diverse community is the lifestyle inspiration to create a culture that allows us to relax and enjoy our enviable natural surroundings. The result is casual, organic, surprising. There’s nothing contrived, pretentious or stuffy. It’s built on a love of beach culture, but is so much more. In artistic endeavours as diverse as architecture, design, photography, fashion, music and performance arts, creative individuals have carved out careers and built businesses to combine what they love doing, with a lifestyle they love. Whilst the Arts Centre Gold Coast was literally bursting at the seams as it recently celebrated 25 years, when it comes to cultural infrastructure, the city is missing the museums and major arts assets of traditional cities. Ours is a vibrant culture that has bubbled up from underground, and never taken itself too seriously. There’s nothing quite like a dynamic, fun environment to get the creative juices flowing – from bikini fashion pioneer Paula Stafford to Oscar-winning aminatronics whizz John Cox and Elanora band Operator Please, who took out an ARIA for Breakthrough Artist while they were still in their teens, the Gold Coast has a rich creative heritage. From Queensland’s first Government Architect Phillip Follent, to

founding director of the annual Swell Sculpture Festival Natasha Edwards and renowned artist Claudio Kirac, artist-in-residence at the city’s newest creative precinct St Thomas Studio, the city has proven to be a fertile environment for excellence and innovation. You could say that in coming of age we’re moving from ‘beach to Bleach*’, the festival of arts, music, sun, surf and sand that in three short years has come close to representing what culture means in this city. And we’re investing in our cultural assets, with plans progressing for an iconic Cultural Precinct along with a creative legacy to rival the sporting bequest the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games™ will leave the city. DRIVEN BY OPPORTUNITIES Creativity finds expression spontaneously through individual artists and collaborative projects, through incubators and arts programs, through markets and arts precincts and an underlying connection to history, environment and lifestyle. “The Gold Coast seems to have a lot of ‘natural’ culture that is encountered spontaneously, almost accidentally, which is both surprising and exciting,” Ms Archer says. And a year-round calendar of events such as Bleach*, The Gold Coast Film Festival, Blues on Broadbeach, the Swell Sculpture Festival and The Gold Coast Art Prize (and exhibition) ensures there is always something to celebrate.

Markets and arts precincts like Rabbit + Cocoon are creating places and spaces for arts to thrive, while educational institutions are refining the skills of emerging artisans—including the Gold Coast Institute of TAFE with its new $30 million creative industries campus, numerous private creative colleges and Griffith University, which offers Queensland Conservatorium’s popular music degree and is home to the Queensland College of Art (QCA), Gold Coast. Bond and Southern Cross universities also nurture the talent of tomorrow. The Gold Coast has a long and proud tradition of film and television production, with the city’s Film Gold Coast Investment Attraction Program assisting high profile productions Chronicles of Narnia: Voyage of the Dawn Treader; Peter Pan; The Great Raid and Scooby Doo. “I believe visitors will come to the city for sport and beaches and they’ll be surprised by a culturally rich environment,” Ms Archer says. Robyn Archer AO recently completed her five-year role as Creative Director for the Centenary of Canberra (2013) and was formerly Artistic Director of the National Festival of Australian Theatre, the Adelaide and Melbourne International Arts Festivals, and Ten Days on the Island (which she created for Tasmania). Shopping

Shopping The Gold Coast continues to evolve as a haven for retail enthusiasts with a vast array of shopping options headlined by signature fashion boutiques and iconic department store brands. With some of Australia’s largest retail centres and most stylish fashion precincts, even grocery shopping on the Gold Coast is an enticing prospect. Browse the generous complexes, take a shopping tour, peruse the boutiques, wander through the piazzas and pay particular attention to the factory outlet precincts. Among the host of opportunities

available to willing travellers are several key shopping precincts, all within easy reach of accommodation, that are an essential feature of the Gold Coast retail trail.

freshness is reflected in the vibrant shopping and dining precinct that continues to grow amid some of the Gold Coast’s most impressive accommodation.

Surfers Paradise is one of Australia’s leading retail precincts with shopping until 9pm every night and hundreds of boutique, department or domestic stores to choose from. Tree-lined boulevards shade international names like Cartier, Prada, Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Fendi and Hermes.

Harbour Town is Australia’s first purpose-built brand direct/factory outlet shopping centre. Discover more than 220 outlet stores selling quality brand fashions, home wares “on sale every day” in a colourful and vibrant shopping destination.

Broadbeach is at the forefront of Gold Coast style and has developed as one of the city’s most cosmopolitan districts. This

Artisans of the Coast WHEN IT COMES TO CRAFTSMANSHIP IN AUSTRALIA, ADELAIDE INSTITUTION JAMFACTORY ENJOYS THE FINEST REPUTATION. OVER 40 YEARS, JAMFACTORY HAS NURTURED CONTEMPORARY CRAFT & DESIGN. While there are no craft institutions of the reputation of JamFactory on the Gold Coast, quality artisans seem to be coming out of the woodwork, from North to South. On the Southern End of the coast – Coop Art studio, managed by Coolangatta local Byron Coathup, is a hub where craftsmanship is celebrated across a range of disciplines. The industrial space houses woodworkers, a ceramicist, and a home wares designer. All these residents share a passion to create beautifully handcrafted objects. Coathup, who creates recycled timber frames and custom furniture says he established the space to service a growing need for a collaborative working environment for the Gold Coast’s creative community. “It came from an interaction between ourselves and the landlords, it was a vacant block – it was dead and wasn’t being used, and now we’ve turned it into a space for us to work as artists and communicate,” he says. “What we have here is a space where you can work independently, but have likeminded people close by who can respond to your work – it’s a bit like an incubator.”

“Our main aim is to get other artists coming into use the space working in there in collaboration with the permanent residences and get a bit of a mix going on.” Marloe Morgan was the other driving force in getting the space established. She spends her days staying busy around her firing kiln where she creates beautiful ceramic objects for her self-titled label. Morgan, who worked previously as a photography assistant with Gold Coast surf retail giants SurfStitch says she was looking for an opportunity where she could express herself creatively, and use her hands to build a timeless and beautiful product. “I knew I wanted to do something creative, but I wasn’t quite sure what that was, so started looking at extra curricular things and put a list together of all the things that I was interested in.” “Ceramics was something that was available to do at night, on the Gold Coast, so I started night classes and just fell in love with the craft. Six months later I left my job to pursue this full time.”

She does business online, and in a select few retailers. One stockist is Small Stall in Palm Beach. Morgan says she has been able to receive business mentorship thanks to the support of Twahn McMahon, Small Stall’s owner. “She took a massive risk with me, I didn’t know if what I was making was going to work on a commercial level and she has been awesome to learn from,” says Morgan “She does some great workshops with the creative community, and she really gets behind the crafts.” McMahon’s Small Stall on the Gold Coast Highway in Palm Beach, stocks everything from ceramics to independent magazines, to handmade tea towels. McMahon established her business to bring the idea of bespoke, artisan products to the Gold Coast from further afield and inspire the local creative community. “It’s predominantly Australian designs and predominantly handmade products, that is our focus,” explains McMahon. “Since we have opened the most amazing local talent has just come out the woodwork. We’ve worked with around five local potters, a leather artisan, jewellery makers, weavers, crochet knitters, the quality is so good we have been able to stock their wares among some international talent.” Author Nolan Giles – courtesy of moregoldcoast.com.au

Health, Services & Beauty Beaches The Gold Coast boasts 30 different beaches each with their own personality and providing a welcoming village feel. Wide expanses of sand are ideal for walking, while the more secluded enclaves feature an exclusively intimate, private feel. World-famous surf breaks to the south include Snapper Rocks, Duranbah, Coolangatta, Kirra and Currumbin Alley, while South Stradbroke, Narrowneck and the Seaway are the picks to the north. For family fun, you can’t go past the popular swimming spots of Main Beach, Surfers Paradise, Northcliffe, Broadbeach, plus Tallebudgera and Currumbin Creeks.

Surf Safety Although the sea may look inviting, please remember it can also be very dangerous. Rips and tides unseen to the untrained eye can take lives. • Always swim between the flags at designated lifesaving clubs on the Gold Coast • Never swim without telling someone where you are going • Never swim under the influence of alcohol • Be water wise and enjoy our beaches responsibly.

Burleigh Heads provides the complete package with barrelling waves, a scenic headland and a cosy coastal setting.

Sun Safety When enjoying our beautiful Queensland sun, always remember: • Apply 30+ sunscreen • Wear a hat and a collared shirt • Avoid sunburn by protecting yourself, especially between 10am and 2pm.

Hinterland

Hinterland Gold Coast Hinterland Just 40 minutes’ drive from Gold Coast beaches is a hinterland of subtropical rainforest, interspersed with mountain villages, bushwalks, waterfalls and swimming holes, plus valleys of working produce farms and cattle stations. The World Heritage-listed Springbrook and Lamington National Parks, plus the extended township of Tamborine Mountain offer access to unmatched landscapes with some of the best campgrounds available and other ecofriendly accommodation venues. Roaming wildlife and an array of flora and fauna represent nature at its finest. If you’re feeling active try hang gliding, horse riding, 4WD tours, hot air ballooning, ATV adventures or canopy walks. Bed-and-breakfast

outlets, wineries, boutique distilleries and breweries, restaurants, rustic homesteads, plus local produce, arts and crafts and jewellery stores are scattered throughout this rural setting. Tamborine Mountain There are nine National Parks within the Tamborine Mountain region, all with fantastic walking tracks which lead through magnificent subtropical rainforest, with several picnic and barbeque areas. Gallery Walk is one of the major attractions of Tamborine Mountain and exudes a quaint village feel. Take your time to browse through the numerous galleries showcasing local artists, taste some of the local wines and liqueurs at the cellar doors or indulge in homemade treats such as fudge and jam.

There are also some beautiful waterfalls within the area that truly are amazing, especially after some rain fall. Some of these waterfalls include Cameron Falls, Cedar Creek Falls and the Witches Falls. Make sure you take the time to visit Tamborine Mountain while on your Gold Coast holiday, you won’t be disappointed. Tours The natural, contrasting landscape of Australia’s Gold Coast places the many designated tours as a must do on any traveller’s holiday agenda. Be informed as local guides enhance your Gold Coast itinerary with a plethora of unique experiences that seek to educate and inform as much as they entertain the senses. Expand your culinary boundaries through food and wine tours of the magical hinterland or explore the natural wonders of the local area by directing your four wheel drive expedition through a wide selection of eco-tours. Specialised cruises, sightseeing and shopping excursions allow individuals and families to maximise their time on the Gold Coast. Australia’s Gold Coast is a 24-hour destination with night tours a major part of the entertainment mix. Exclusive access to the country’s large population of nocturnal native animals can provide the opportunity of a lifetime.

Transport & Car Hire

Transport & Car Hire The natural, contrasting landscape of Australia’s Gold Coast places the self-drive tour as a must do on any traveller’s holiday agenda. The collective voice of more than 10.5 million visitors each year is a clear indication of the region’s ability to continually offer up new and innovative things to see and do all year long. Such strength lies in the natural and manmade diversity of a destination which is scenic and peaceful as much as it is fast paced and active. Expand your culinary boundaries through food and wine tours of the magical hinterland or explore the natural wonders of the local area by directing a four wheel drive expedition. From rural Beenleigh in the north to picturesque Kingscliff beach in the south, west to the hinterland region and the famed Surfers Paradise and Broadbeach in between; the Gold Coast experience is much more than you expect. Behind every name on the Gold Coast map there’s a new and exciting experience waiting for you. A great way to explore the many regions of the Gold Coast is to hire a car and discover it for yourself.

Five Gold Coast Drives 1. SPRINGBROOK DRIVE A short drive out of Tugun up a winding mountain road will land you at the top of the picturesque Springbrook Mountain. Highlight: Aptly named “Best of All Lookout” offers a viewing platform like no other, the view at sunrise will take your breath away. Don’t miss: Wunburra Lookout which gives you exceptional views of Purling Brook Gorge and Mount Cougal. Best trail: the Purlingbrook Falls 4km circuit takes you down into a gorge to a waterfall surrounded by a number of rock pools, (don’t forget to take your swimmers). 2. NUMINBAH DRIVE This drive will take you right to the heart of the Gold Coasts hinterland, crossing the border of Northern NSW before you head North again via Tomewin Mountain. Highlight: Natural Bridge is a site you cannot miss. A short walk will take you to an amazing bridge-like rock formation that was created over millions of years from water plummeting through the ceiling of a basalt cave.

Don’t miss: the crystal clear waters of the Currumbin Valley Rock Pools. Best trail: Tomewin Mountain offers a challenging walking track for the more adventurous. Located near the top of the mountain, bushwalkers have the opportunity to take an early exit point and reduce the walk to a half-day bushwalk. 3. BINNA BURRA DRIVE This drive takes you to Lamington National Park. Plenty of bush walking options are available for various fitness levels. This is a trip not to be missed. Highlight: take the time to navigate at least one of the national park walks where you can see wallabies and kangaroos in their natural habitat. Don’t miss: the Binna Burra Teahouse which offers exceptional views of the hinterland and beyond. We recommend: if you have time, Binna Burra offers fantastic accommodation and camping facilities, giving you more time to explore the natural beauty that the region has to offer. 4. TUMBULGUM DRIVE Enjoy this half day adventure which takes you through Currumbin Valley and up

Tomewin Mountain. Highlight: the entire drive offers exceptional scenic views of the coastline Don’t miss: this drive takes you through the mountains and back along the foreshore of Kirra beach which offers plenty of fantastic restaurants. Time this drive to finish at lunch or dinner and enjoy an oceanfront dining experience. 5. CURRUMBIN VALLEY DRIVE An approximately two hour turnaround drive allows you to get a glimpse of the natural beauty the Gold Coast hinterland has to offer. Highlight: if the weather is warm pack your swimmers because the Currumbin Valley Rock Pools offer exceptional safe swimming under a sub-tropical rainforest canopy. Don’t miss: Freemans Fruit Stall, located near the top of Tomewin Mountain. The stall offers an abundance of in season fruit that you can enjoy on your trip. On the return trip check out the Currumbin Valley Harvest, where you can enjoy locally harvested coffee and learn about their hydroponically grown vegetable gardens.
