BARBARA JOYCE PARKER WILLIAMS
Barbara Joyce Parker Williams was born August 19, 1949 in Dallas, Texas to James D., Sr. and Alverniece Parker. She accepted Christ at an early age and joined True Purpose Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of her grandfather, the late Rev. A. L. Wilburn, Sr. She later served under the leadership of her brother, Rev. James D. Parker, Jr. Barbara faithfully served as the church’s financial secretary for over thirty years. Barbara graduated from Franklin D. Roosevelt High School in Dallas, TX, Class of 1967. She went on to graduate from Bishop College and later earned a Master’s degree from Prairie View A&M University. For 40 years, Barbara was united in holy matrimony to Sonny George Williams, FDR class of 1966. He honored their love and was a devoted husband, provider and caregiver until the end. Barbara was passionate about education and her greatest joy was teaching young scholars to read. She would often talk about how she was able to teach her three-year-old class of learners how to read at Jimmie Tyler Brashear. Barbara worked throughout the Dallas Independent School District at various elementary schools, including Sequoyah, Umphrey Lee, Elisha M. Pease and Adelle Turner Elementary School. She retired from education in 2001 with 30 years of commitment and service to young children. She was an active member of Community Missionary Baptist Church where she served under the leadership of Rev. Oscar D. Epps, Sr. Sister Williams served in various capacities within the church, including the choir and seniors ministry. Vibrant and personable, Barbara or “Barb”, as she was affectionately called by family and friends, enjoyed life and brought joy to all those around her. Barb was dedicated to friends and family; she often served as hostess and caregiver to those in need. She was selfless
and always a willing help to others. Her home was the location for many festive dinners that weren’t complete without her famous German Chocolate cake. She also enjoyed serving on committees and active membership in Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, Alpha Xi Omega Chapter. She was an active Soror and served faithfully to fulfill the sorority’s mission of Service to All Mankind until her health began to decline. Barbara’s ultimate joy, Her husband loved and cared for her over the forty years of their marriage and she truly appreciated his undying support of her and his family. Her love was also for her two daughters, Traci and Teri, as well as, her five grandchildren. If you ever sat down to talk with her, you were definitely going to hear of all of the amazing things that they were doing in their lives. She was constantly bragging on her daughters, as well as, their husbands, Gerold and Steven. You could see the joy in her eyes when she spoke of them. Barb also enjoyed spending time with her sisters, Sherry Diane and Janet. Where you would see one, you would likely see the other. They spent countless hours on the phone and were inseparable. Barbara is preceded in death by her loving parents: James D., Sr. and Alverniece Parker.
