Directors Message Gludt Family Picnic We are looking forward to our Chapter picnic at fellow members’ Dick and Doris Gludt home in Troy, ID on Saturday 11 May. They are located about 90 miles from Spokane. We will be joined by 3-5 cars from the west side Chapters. Stevie Lewis will be responsible for organizing the food and drink contributions and Todd Smith will be coordinating other aspects of travel. We look forward to seeing all the Gludt Family and will really appreciate the demise of our snow! We thank the Gludt Family for their kind offer to host this function.

Potential 2023 BCA National Meet Hosting During our last meeting, considerable time was spent discussing our potential hosting of the 2023 BCA National Meet. In order to facilitate the potential hosting of the National Meet, we established a Steering Committee (SC), which will be responsible for submitting a National Meet Plan to the BCA National Meet Committee (NMC). The SC will include the current officers: Greg Lewis, Director (BCA #5071), Todd Smith, Assistant Director (BCA #43730), Debby Roberts, Secretary (BCA #47647), Lee Branum, Treasurer (BCA #2204), Jeff Schindler, Social Media, Activities and Newsletter Director (BCA #47629), and Alan Thiese, Former Director and Member At Large (BCA #37442). The SC will also be the core group for preparation and during the National Meet if we are selected to be the host of the 2023 National Meet. We have already received full support from the North Cascades and Puget Sound Chapters. The proposed date of 12-15 July 2023 (Wednesday-Saturday) was selected to avoid conflict with Spokane and other BCA chapters’ planned events. In order to expedite preliminary planning, I have contacted the Spokane and Coeur d’Alene Convention and Visitor Bureaus. After speaking with Mr. Steve Wilson, President and CEO of the Coeur d’Alene Bureau, there did not appear to be many facility options to hold the BCA Meet, however there would be many tour and sight-seeing options, including dinner cruises on Lake Coeur d’Alene. Spokane, however offers several opportunities for potentially hosting the 2023 BCA Meet. I spoke with Ms. Shannon Shannon, Associate Director of Sales, VisitSpokane. She mentioned that Spokane is very interested in hosting car shows/conventions and there is close coordination between Riverfront Park, VisitSpokane, and the Spokane Police Department. She noted a recent convention held in Spokane, which is potentially very relevant to our current interest in hosting the 2023 Buick National Meet. The Porsche Club of America (PCA) held its 9-day 62nd Parade (Meet) event in Spokane during July 2017. The host hotel was the recently constructed Davenport Grand Hotel located on W. Spokane Falls Blvd across from the Spokane Convention Center, First Interstate Center for the Arts and Riverfront Park all located on the Spokane River.

Directors Message continued The Grand has 716 rooms and is a full-service convention hotel with nearly 63000 square feet of conference space. There were over 1100 cars registered for the PCA Parade event and about half participated in their Concours d’Elegance held at Riverfront Park. The Grand hosted participants’ lodging, hospitality and meeting rooms, registration, Art Show, and car wash stations. Banquets were held in the Grand, Spokane Convention Center and the Northern Quest Resort & Casino (NQRC) located near the Spokane International Airport. Trailer parking space was located next to the NQRC. An excellent website provides great detail of the PCA 2017 Parade events (https://www.pca.org/event/2017-02-14/porsche-parade-2017-spokane-washington). For our potential hosting opportunity, tours may include bus tours for wine tasting, trip to the historic mining town of Wallace, ID, Grand Coulee Dam, Lake Coeur d’Alene and several other destinations. Dinner cruises on Lake Coeur d’Alene should interest many participants. Walking tours would be available to see interesting sites in the local Spokane area. The DeLorean Sports Car Club will be having their National Meet in Spokane in the near future. Jeff Schindler brought to my attention that the Hudson-Essex-Terraplane (H.E.T.) Motor Club held their 2010 National Meet in Spokane. There are many car clubs in the region and many use Spokane area facilities. I anticipate that our Chapter SC will explore these and other options prior to submitting our National Meet Plan to the NMC. We will continue these discussions during our future meetings. All Chapter members are encouraged to make suggestions to the SC, which would improve our input to the BCA National Meet Plan Greg Lewis BCA #5071 Director, Inland Northwest Chapter BCA

BUICK’S 1940 6 person 4 door sport Phaeton by Gregg Thurman BCA # 45884

This has been an interesting adventure trying to write about my 1940 Buick Limited convertible sedan (4 door convertible) Model 81C. I didn’t think it would be this difficult, after all I’ve owned it since April 2012. When I bought this Buick after having bought a similar 1941 Buick Super convertible sedan, Model 51C. I fell in love with the look of the 4-door convertible and set out to buy more. I ended up with four. They were a 1937 Buick Roadmaster, Model 71C, a 1940 Buick Century, Model 60C, the aforementioned 1940 Buick Limited, Model 81C and 1941 Buick Super Model 51C. What attracted me to the 1940 Limited, other than it was a 4-door convertible, was its advertised ownership history, but let’s hold off on that until I provide some specs on this car. During 1940 Buick offered 10 separate open models, of which the 81C was the most elegant and glamorous. Buick produced 230, today there are 14 documented examples of the Buick Limited 81C remaining in existence. The wheelbase is 133 inches making the 81C just shy of the larger 81F Formal Sedan (248 were produced). It is powered by a 320 cid Fireball straight eight that generated 141bhp on regular gas (freeway speeds are no problem). 1940 was the second year for Buick with a steering wheel mounted 3-speed gearshift. It came with independent front suspension with coil springs, semi-floating rear axle and four-wheel hydraulic drum brakes. Creature comforts included an AM radio, clock, a Fresh Aire under seat heater and defrost system. My Buick is Sequoia Yellow and is equipped with dual side mounts. The interior is burgundy leather. As I noted in the introduction I bought this Buick from a dealer in Connecticut in April 2012. The previous owner claimed 20th Century Fox Studios originally purchased it in late 1939. It was immediately sent to Bohman–Schwarz coachbuilders in Pasadena, California for modification to the four doors. Bohman-Schwarz was known for building custom Duesenberg bodies for the Hollywood elite. The modifications that 20th Century Fox ordered was the removal of all door glass, window cranks and door locks. The top of the doors were “Frenched” over to provide a smooth surface on which passengers, in this case Hollywood notables including Shirley Temple, could rest their arms while waving without the window channel causing them discomfort. 20th Century Fox Studios used my Buick extensively for war bond drives and celebrity appearances throughout WWII, as it could not buy a new car until 1946. By that time it went with larger car convertible coupes as the 1940 production year was Buick’s last producing a 4 door convertible. Also among the prior owner list for my Limited convertible are Lorin Tyron, Jr. of Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance fame and Tom Barret of Barret-Jackson. In 2001 at the Greenwich (Connecticut) Concourse d’Elegance my ’40 Buick convertible received the MOST DISTINGUISHED OPEN CAR award.

My Limited has been prominently featured at the Peterson Auto Museum in Los Angeles and on Mequiars web site in 2006. Taking delivery of the 1940 Buick Limited 4 door convertible was an exercise in love at first sight. It looked just as elegant as the photos promised it would. Like a bad boy I took it for a spin before getting it registered and insured. Trust me my head was on a swivel. Driving around the downtown turned a lot of heads. I was surprised at how smooth the ride was, my only complaint being that the brakes needed help (I may upgrade to disc brakes). That experience caused me to make my Buick available for special events and parades. I drove Sheriff Ozzie Knezovich in a Millwood parade, beauty queens at the Lilac Festival Parade, lots of newly weds on their way to their first night, and birthday and prom celebrations The Limited has also been used as a prop for period glamour photo shoots. I haven’t driven my Buick since I sideswiped a street sign while pulling into a gas station in 2014. I was in the early stages of a debilitating eye affliction that impaired my vision. Subsequent to that incident I voluntarily surrendered my driver’s license. Last November I submitted to an experimental surgery that worked and I’ll be getting my driver’s license renewed shortly, but you won’t see my Buick until next Spring as I can now justify having the damage repaired, a repaint and a new convertible top installed. I’m also changing out the 6v generator for a 6v alternator. There’s nothing quite like having enough electrical power.

All Oil is Not Created Equal! I’ve been around automobiles my entire life. about the last 10 years (one word = kids). I ground on a lot of things. Recently though I thereof) in oil and how modern off the shelf classic car engine.

With the exception of my early years and thought I had my ear pretty close to the kept seeing references to zinc (or lack motor oils can be a death sentence to a

Got your attention yet? Oil is oil right? Well apparently not. It all has to do with the evolution of engine designs. Newer designs utilize a roller cam which results in less friction. Zinc’s (or ZDDP/ZDTP) primary use in oil is as an anti-wear agent. It coats internal parts to reduce friction. ZDDP/ZDTP additives also negatively effects the lifespan of catalytic converters which effect emissions and now we are into the cow fart discussion. Enough said on that!

Modern roller cams (right) vs earlier generation flat tappet cams (left). Note the greater potential for metal on metal wear. The necessity for zinc is typically exemplified through the flat tappet cam

all boils down to is we can’t just go and buy oil off the shelf, put it in the and call it a day. We either need to buy an oil with a higher zinc content or an additive to keep the necessary anti-wear properties that the early generation require. This is everything from the earliest motors up to and into the early

Some examples of high zinc oils and additives are: Oils: Lucas Hot Rod & Classic Car Oil, Valvoline VR1 Racing, Amsoil Z-Rod, Brad Penn ‘Penn-Grade 1’, Royal Purple HPS, Shell Rotella Diesel Oil Additives: AC Delco Engine Oil Supplement (#88862587), Cam-Shield, ZddPlus, Edelbrock High Performance Zinc Additive, Eastwood ZDDP, ArchOil AR9100 The above list was gleaned from the reference articles listed below. I’ve highlighted several products for a reason: Valvoline VR1 Racing Oil – This product is recommended by Centerville Auto in California. They are the unquestionably the #1 Nailhead shop on the west coast. My next oil change will be this, and you can buy it on Amazon for about $6/quart. Centerville recommends 10w30 for newer/low mileage engines, and 20w50 for those more experienced engines. AC Delco Engine Oil Supplement – This is an additive GM recommends for startup and break-in. It has the bonus quality of being the necessary supplement for older engines at every oil change. Due to regulations GM does not market it as a zinc supplement. ArchOil AR9100 – This is an entirely different class of oil additive. ArchOil is what is called nano technology. It uses boron as an anti-wear agent. I recently came across this watching Jay Leno’s garage. Jay noted his engine builder swears by it - so Jay did an episode on it. It’s also Made in the USA. If its good enough for Jay Leno’s engines I think we can all be using it. Also available on Amazon. I just added this to my oil yesterday because I know the oil I put in last spring was off the shelf. I can honestly say I can already tell the difference. There was a slight lifter noise at idle that after a few hours of running around with ArchOil is now gone. I highly recommend watching the video from Jay Leno’s garage: https://youtu.be/h3ir3bg0ESU

Our inaugural event First Tuesday will be at the Skyway Cafe at Felts Field on Tuesday, April 2 at 11:30. A (Buick social) essentially its an additional opportunity to get together and talk shop and/or a good excuse to get our cars out for a drive! Also, the location is not set in stone every month so if you have suggestions send them over as well. While searching the Antique Automobile Club of America (aaca.org) website recently on my phone. I typed in Spokane Buick club and the headline “Are there any Buick Clubs in Spokane WA‌..? / from an August 1st 2009 post. I screen captured that page from the forum and a few of the responses so I could return to it later. Well instead of responding, tonight I just started a new post and announced that the Inland Northwest Buick chapter EXIST. Sort of like the hashtag from this past 10 days #GonzagaExist love March Madness, go search Jimmy Kimmel and Gonzaga Exist, in case you missed all the exposure and free publicity that was generated by all of this. Well our Elite Eight appearance against Texas Tech (75 to 69) did not turn out as many of us prayed for, we still love the Zags mens basketball team and #unitedwezag. A few of us decided; after attending the March 26th Inland Northwest Car Club Council (INCCC) meeting that we would join the Valve Cover race event held in conjunction with the Spokane Great Road Rally. What is a Valve Cover race? Check out this local website link https://www.spokaneroadrally.com/valve-cover-races we are digging out our spare parts and searching for candidates for the INWBCA creation.

An update on the INCCC Downtown Scholarship Car Show July 18th 6pm. This year (16) $1500.00 scholarships will be awarded to youth in our area. The purpose of the show, besides providing an unusual venue for members to exhibit their cars, is to award the scholarships to recently graduated high school seniors, chosen by committee from applications submitted. Winners can use the money for any purpose associated with further schooling. There are no restrictions on the schools attended or what expense they spend the money. Scholarships awarded over the life of the show total over $310,250. The money comes from various fund raising activities of the INCCC including the registration fees for this show and donations from INCCC member car clubs.
