March 19, 2014 NEWS

Innis Celebrates Family, Community, and Diversity Innis celebrated family and community twice this weekend in the Innis College Choir's final concert of the year and in Innis’ own Holi celebration. On Saturday the Choir performed a series of historical pop hits from the 20th and 21st centuries in a concert attended by Innis family and friends. Directors Misan Lee and Alex Huntress-Reeve were thrilled at the amazing musical talent of the singers who were able to balance long choir rehearsals with schoolwork and other involvement in Innis and UofT. On Sunday, Innis Residence hosted its own celebration of Holi, the festival of colours. Many Innis students braved the cold weather to throw coloured powder in celebration of friends, family, and forgiveness. They were also given the opportunity to warm up with hot chocolate, Indian food, and sweets while hanging out with old friends and making new ones. Photos courtesy of Alan Wu and Yuto Takaoka.

2014 U of T IDERD Awards THURSDAY, MARCH 2ND 12:45PM – 2:00PM OISE Library Ontario Institute for Studies in Education, 252 Bloor St. West Join the ARCDO and Professor Angela Hildyard, Vice-President Human Resources & Equity, to acknowledge the 2014 U of T IDERD Award recipients for their notable work in advancing anti-racism at the University of Toronto. This year’s theme, Decolonizing Education towards the Advancement of Anti-Racism, is a platform to identify and generate diverse perspectives on how members of the University community are engaging in work/initiatives that tackle racism and create and sustain more equitable and inclusive environments within education, generally, and post-secondary education, specifically. Decolonizing education refers to the examination of how we can move away from Eurocentric traditions in Canadian post-secondary institutions to include and appreciate “non-normative” forms of knowing and teaching. To deconstruct colonial frameworks and forms of knowledge globally imposed largely on bodies of colour, is to contribute to the broader project of developing institutional antiracism. The Anti-Racism & Cultural Diversity Office is launching a short video project entitled “Other[ed.]: What is decolonizing education in the post-secondary setting?” The objective of the video is to explore the diverse perspectives on the meaning of decolonizing education, what it looks like in the classroom, activities, events structures, institutions and practices.
