April 1, 2015 NEWS

Here’s what you missed at Innis last week: On Saturday, March 28, the current and future leaders of Innis came together for the 5th annual IN2U: Transitions to Leadership. All of those who were elected, volunteered or hired for a position at Innis for the 2015-2016 school year participated in the daylong workshop. The sessions presented throughout the day highlighted the importance of communication, collaboration, goal setting, equity and decision-making when being a leader, as well as the steps needed to transition to new roles. The keynote speech was presented by past Innis Student Life Dons, John Soleas and Aly Hirji, who highlighted the importance of what makes a good leader, and the importance of individuals in an institution which often places a high value on numbers. The day also included the Leadership Awards Lunch, which honoured the students who are highly involved in the Innis community, particularly those who will graduate this year. The whole day was organized and presented by our students leaders, for the incoming student leaders of 2015-16, so a big shout out goes to all of those who took the time to share their knowledge with the new generation of Innis leaders. A large thank you goes to the Leadership committee, and particularly the head of the committee, Lamorna Dudding, who made this day possible. (Photos by Randy Hanbyul Lee and Lanxin Li)

INNIS COLLEGE LEADERSHIP AWARDS - REVISED APPLICATION FORMS ONLINE The deadline to apply for any Innis College Leadership awards is 2 April 2015, and we have put up modified application packages for you to look at. There are three related to leadership awards: Graduating Student Leadership Awards Returning Student (In-Course) Leadership Awards The M. "Fuzz" Friend Memorial Award For anyone who already downloaded the previous version of the 2014-2015 Application Package, the biggest difference is more information – more tips and guidelines about putting together a strong application. Other than that, there is now a strict word limit for the statement that accompanies the first two awards -- 500 words. We also, this year, will accept the application on paper, or – if it helps – you can scan your completed package and send it to registrar.innis@utoronto.ca. If you have any complications, or ANY questions at all, you can reach out either to the Office of the Registrar or the Office of Student Life. Bookmark this page which focuses on Innis awards requiring applications, and to find links to these and other forms, visit: innis.utoronto.ca/current-students/forms/

Skills For Success The Research Readiness Program Are you an undergraduate student who will work in a university research group in the summer, or are interested in summer research in the following years? Would you like to know more about how research works, and the skills needed by all researchers? Then the following free workshop is for you: This summer the Impact Centre at U of T offers the Research Readiness Program for undergraduate students who are new to research, or who are interested in summer research work. It is a 4-day non-credit course that covers the common topics that most researchers need to know, such as literature searches, keeping a lab book, technical communication, design of experiments, data analysis, noise sources, etc. This program will make you more productive in summer research positions, allowing you to get started more efficiently. The bulk of the training will take place during 4 days in early May (Mon. May 4 to Thu. May 7). We will hold an additional networking event in June where you will have the opportunity to connect with others in the research world. In early August you will be able to practice your presentation skills with conference-style presentations, and take part in reflective exercises on the skills needed for research. This is a free, non-credit course. The time investment will be recuperated through increased productivity in research work. Many of the topics will also be useful as students progress towards and through graduate school. For more details, see impactcentre.utoronto.ca/training/rrp To sign up, please email: Emanuel Istrate, Ph.D. Academic Program Coordinator Impact Centre, University of Toronto eistrate@imc.utoronto.ca
