EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT FROSH WEEK! MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 1ST - SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 6TH Welcome to Innis! Hey Innis! We are Nicole and Alex, your Orientation Coordinators for Frosh Week 2014. Frosh Week is made up of 6 fun-packed days intended to help get the ball rolling for your next 4 years at U of T. We and our hard working exec team have planned a week full of events ranging from academic orientation and clubs days to a formal dinner and block party with everything in between. There's something for everyone at Innis Frosh Week! Whether you are a local, new to Toronto, or new to Canada, Frosh promises to be one of the most memorable weeks of your university career and maybe your life! Don't want the week to end? Neither do we! Join us for the Saturday late-evening party at the end of Frosh week! Worried about the long commute home? The Off-Campus reps are hosting a Commuter Extravaganza where they will subsidize a portion of your hotel cost as the night finishes! This is a great way to start the year off by staying in touch with everyone you've just met in Frosh Week.

Preparing for Frosh We will be posting the complete schedule on the Facebook group in mid-August as well as in the next edition of the Student Life Newsletter, but in the meantime, we have prepared a short list of things we encourage you to bring in preparation for the week:

Semi-formal Attire

Instruments – if you're musically inclined

Comfortable walking shoes

It's not too late to register for Frosh Week!

Sleeping bag and pillow – if you are billeting

All students are automatically registered for Frosh Week, but please provide your information here!

Incoming First Years Get involved from day 1! Want to get involved with Innis but don’t know where to start? The Innis College Student Society (ICSS) is the elected student government at Innis College, and a great first place to get involved! ICSS is committed to providing educational, political, social and athletic services to all students enrolled at Innis College, including those who live in Residence on campus, as well as commuters who live off-campus. All Innis students are welcome to attend meetings of the ICSS Council, and are encouraged to participate in the many social events offered throughout the year. The Innis College Student Society (ICSS) will be releasing nomination forms for the positions of First Year Representative and Social Director during Frosh Week. Interested students will have 7 days to fill out the nomination forms and to return them to the ICSS office. The election period will run Thursday, September 18th and Friday, September 19th will campaigning from Thursday September, 11th through Wednesday, September 17th. Mentorship InSight Mentorship The InSight Mentorship Committee provides a platform that fosters both academic and personal growth for students through different workshops and events. We also aim to smooth the transition from high school to university for first year students by organizing a mentorship system that matches first year students with upper years. Our goal is that everyone from Innis can enjoy a meaningful experience at Innis and UofT! Find us at clubs day to learn how you can get involved with InSight! Skills For Success Join the Skills for Success Committee for the 2014/2015 year! We will be hosting many events throughout the year to help prepare you for the future and help students hone their skills for academic success at UofT! This year we will be hosting events such as: • • •

Grad Expo Employment Expo Going Global (Study Abroad)

Community Outreach Get Involved With Innis Community Outreach! Innis Community Outreach provides a number of unique opportunities for the students of Innis College at the University of Toronto. We connect students to volunteer opportunities and provide placements in nursing homes, food banks, and international charities; fundraise for a number of charitable organizations; and provide a variety of programs, lectures, and activities to broaden your own experience of university, the city, and indeed the world. If you are interested in issues, discussions, and making a positive change in the world around you, Community Outreach is for you! We are trying a number of new things this year, from collaborating with a number of Innis- and UofT-wide clubs, from artistic to athletic to musical, and our events are a great way to discover the neighbourhoods, issues, and challenges that face our local community. Most importantly, the outings and activities we engage in are strikingly fun as well as socially conscious. A more detailed schedule of the year’s events and activities will be released at the end of August. Get Involved as a Community Project Leader for U of T! SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 27TH and SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 28TH 9:00AM – 5:30PM Register by SEPTEMBER 15 Community Project Leader Training will provide you with a forum for exchanging ideas and developing new skills. This training will be specifically geared toward students that hold a positional leadership role that involves working collaboratively with community partners and students toward a common goal. This training will help give you the tools needed to facilitate a community based opportunity for students using a service-learning approach. Arts and Culture Check Out Innis Arts and Culture! The Innis Arts and Culture Committee is committed to building a tight-knit community within the college in which to celebrate the artistic and cultural nature of Toronto. We will be participating in several festivals, planning trips to major attractions, exploring local neighbourhoods, and other various events planned by the committee throughout the year. Health and Wellness Join the Health and Wellness Club at Innis! The Health and Wellness Club welcomes you to another school year at Innis! This year we have tons of exciting activities such as Zumba, Wen-do, and Yoga to help keep off that freshman 15. We also have spa and massage events taking place during the midterm season in order to help you relax. We’re looking forward to a fun year with you guys – hope to see you soon! Food and Nutrition The Food and Nutrition Committee Welcomes You! Excited to be living on your own? Don't really know what to cook for yourself? Don't worry - come check out the Food & Nutrition committee. We will be hosting cooking workshops, sharing recipes, and most importantly, learning from each other! Last year we made everything from hearty squash soup for those chilly fall nights to sweet treats like macaroons. Keep your eyes peeled for the first Introductory Cooking Workshop sometime in September in future newsletters and by connecting with our Facebook page! We love to share recipes and would love to hear what you have to say. Look for our table during Clubs Day during Frosh Week and be sure to sign up! Everyone can pitch in to help make cooking at Innis exciting, easy, and fun!

International Welcome From the International Committee! Welcome to Innis! We are here to help our international students adjust to life in Toronto and to help transition smoothly to university life. We also promote multiculturalism in the Innis community. Some events that you can look forward to are the Academic Integrity Info Sessions in late September and a Writing Session in late October. We are also excited to announce that this year we will host a monthly Global Cafe starting in October. At each one, we will discuss different topics and have a special guest speaker. This is all done so students can have a chance to communicate with others who have a different culture or academic background. We will also collaborate with other committees to meet other Canadian students and to give you the best university experience! International Student Welcome Day – REGISTRATION REQUIRED! SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 13TH 10 AM – 1 PM Innis College Residence, 111 St. George Street Please RSVP at: rsvp.innis@utoronto.ca You will be able to meet your International Experience Committee members, our Centre for International Experience Advisor, and members from the Registrar’s Office, followed by a luncheon with the Principal and Dean of Students. iConnect International Mentorship Program – Mentees Welcome! New International Students are now invited to apply for the iConnect program. As mentees, you will be matched with a peer mentor and their mentorship begins online immediately. During the year, participants attend workshops and social events, and increase their cross-cultural understanding to ease their transition to U of T. Muslim Student Association Offers an Alternative Frosh Week MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 1st – FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 5th Sign up here: goo.gl/qsHWLK The Muslim Students’ Association is here to help you make a smooth transition to university life this September. We’d like to invite you to be a part of the MSA’s first special event of the year! MSA Frosh Week will be taking place from September 1 – September 5, and we can’t wait for you to join us in all that we have planned. Journey through the legends of A Thousand and One Nights with us: share tales at a bonfire under the stars; make new friends as you search for treasures at the scavenger hunt; join in the festive mood at a backyard carnival; and last but not least, enjoy the last night with friends at Queen Scheherazade’s Evening Feast.
