THE FROSH WEEK SCHEDULE IS OUT! MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 1ST - SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 6TH Frosh Week is only a couple of days away, but it’s still not too late to register! In fact you can register on the first day of Frosh Week. However, registering now gives the Frosh team important information that will help us better tailor the week to meet your needs. The coordinators, execs, and leaders have all put in a lot of time to make this the best Frosh Week yet full of Academic, Leadership, and Social Events and now you can check out the schedule on page 2! Don't want the week to end? Neither do we! Join us for the Saturday late-evening party at the end of Frosh week! Worried about the long commute home? The Off-Campus reps are hosting a Commuter Extravaganza where they will subsidize a portion of your hotel cost as the night finishes! This is a great way to start the year off by staying in touch with everyone you've just met in Frosh Week. It's not too late to register for Frosh Week! Skills For Success Skills for Success Explained Do you want to unlock the secrets to success? Over the course of the year, you'll have opportunities to receive tips from upper years as well as resumé workshops, interview tips, advice to help you land your first internship, and many networking opportunities with accomplished alumni working in the real world. When you combine it with free treats, books, and prizes, you DO NOT want to miss the chance to discover all the Skills For Success workshops. Spirituality & Diversity Spirituality and Diversity committee welcomes Innis students! Is living away from home hard on you? Don’t worry. The Spirituality and Diversity committee will help create a home away from home by organizing events and celebrating festivals from your own culture. Some of the events lined up this year include Halloween, Diwali, Holi, Hanukah, Queer Film Festival, Chinese New Year and Existence. Our aim is to grow the community feel at Innis, so the committee welcomes new ideas or events that you have in mind. Look for us at the Frosh Week Club Day! Queer Orientation 2014 FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 19TH – MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 29TH New and returning students are invited to engage in events exploring sexual & gender diversity, learn about getting involved on campus and meet new students in 10 activity-filled days. With over 30 events taking place including film screenings, discussions, art activities, meet n’ greets, a cabaret and even dodgeball, there will be something for everyone this Queer Orientation. Queer Orientation will bring new connections and conversations to the University of Toronto from th th September 19 – 29 . Arts & Culture Join the Innis College Choir TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 9TH 6:00PM Innis Residence Music Room Hey Innis! Have you ever been interested in singing, or learning how to sing? Then come and join the Innis College Choir! There are no auditions and no previous experience is required. International International Student Welcome Day – REGISTRATION REQUIRED! iConnect International Mentorship Program – Mentees Welcome New International Students are now invited to apply for the iConnect program. As mentees, you will be matched with a peer mentor and their mentorship begins online immediately. During the year, participants attend workshops and social events, and increase their cross-cultural understanding to ease their transition to U of T. For more information and to apply to be a mentee, visit the iConnect web page.
See What The English Language Learning Program Has To Offer! The English Language Learning (ELL) Program is designed to help multilingual students achieve the high level of English required for top academic work at U of T. Our courses and activities are free and non-credit. All sessions are taught by highly qualified university instructors. Starting on Friday, September 12th the ELL Program will offer free, online academic writing instruction through our Reading eWriting activity. To register, students should contact the ELL Coordinator at: ell.newcollege@utoronto.ca Starting on Monday, September 8th we will also offer free, on-site Communication Cafes which focus on the language needed for high-level academic discussions and presentations. Participating in ELL is a great way to help ensure a successful academic year. It’s also a wonderful opportunity to meet other students who want to establish relationships in English. Get involved from day 1! Want to get involved with Innis but don’t know where to start? The Innis College Student Society (ICSS) is the elected student government at Innis College, and a great first place to get involved! ICSS is committed to providing educational, political, social and athletic services to all students enrolled at Innis College, including those who live in Residence on campus, as well as commuters who live off-campus. All Innis students are welcome to attend meetings of the ICSS Council, and are encouraged to participate in the many social events offered throughout the year. The Innis College Student Society (ICSS) will be releasing nomination forms for the positions of First Year Representative and Social Director during Frosh Week. Interested students will have 7 days to fill out the nomination forms and to return them to the ICSS office. The election period will run Thursday, September 18th and Friday, September 19th will campaigning from Thursday September, 11th through Wednesday, September 17th. Campus Events The Career Information Days Event Is Recruiting Volunteers! TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 16TH – THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 18TH LOCATION: University College Deadline: August 29TH Register at: judith.stolarz@mail.utoronto.ca The Career Information Days (CID) is a great opportunity for University of Toronto students to expand their knowledge of the job market and network with potential employers. Volunteers play a crucial role in ensuring that the career fair runs successfully. A group of University of Toronto student volunteers will be required to help with the organization of the event. In addition, this is a great way for students to get involved in our UofT community and make new friends! Students who volunteer for the event will also be given a reference letter for their efforts and enjoy a pizza lunch! Employment Opportunities Innis Office of Student Life Now Hiring! The Office of Student Life (OSL) is looking for someone to fill the role of Student Life Programming Assistant. Reporting to the Dean of Students in the Innis College Office of Student Life, the Student Life Programming Assistant plays a key role in the organization, logistics, tracking and reporting of student life activities, events, and sessions which are part of Co-Curricular Record (CCR) activities at Innis College, and/or are part of the College's STEP programs. This is a casual part-time job opportunity that is task-specific and expected to take around 10 hours a week, depending on event scheduling and time of year. Innis Students: Be part of your College government! Deadline: FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 19TH Innis College is the only Arts & Science College at the University of Toronto that has parity government. This means there are an equal number of students to faculty/staff positions in our governing Council, and its respective Boards, Committees, and Sub-Committees. Some students are automatically included in many of these committees by virtue of their current elected position. But we are always looking for more students to fulfill the requirements to maintain equal student representation. Each of the Boards & Committees and Council below are looking for committed individuals who will come to two to three meetings over the course of the academic school year. Your participation in any of these Boards will also satisfy the requirements for the Co-Curricular record, provided you are active in the group and attend all meetings. This is a great opportunity to learn some leadership skills while providing your student voice on how our College is governed. If you are interested in joining one of the following Boards or Committees, or College Council, please send an email with your name, student number and email address to the Innis Dean of Students at tim.worgan@utoronto.ca no later than FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 19TH. Please indicate which of the following groups you would be interested in joining, and we will notify you of the first meeting of the term (usually around the end of September). •
College Council – is the large governing body for our College that encompasses the following four Boards and their respective Committees

Academic Affairs Board – meets to discuss the operations and effectiveness of the entire Innis College Academic Program
•
Student Affairs Board - monitors the operations and effectiveness of the College's non-academic services and Student Life programs
•
Community Affairs Board – monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of the College fund-raising and public relations strategies; and encouraging the development of responsive relationships between the College and the community
•
College Affairs Board – review policies pertaining to the administration and use of all College facilities and services
•
Recruitment, Admissions, and Awards Committee (RAAC) - advises the Student Affairs Board on policies pertaining to the recruitment and admission of students to Innis College; and advise on policies pertaining to Innis College scholarships and awards and recommend for consideration by Council decisions regarding the granting or establishment of specific awards;
•
Bursary Sub-Committee – reviews and approves applications for student bursaries and advises RAAC on these applications
•
Residence Committee - advises the Student Affairs Board on policies pertaining to the operation of the Innis Residence and to the services offered to its residents; and advise on policies pertaining to the admission of students to the Innis Residence
•
Student Services Committee – advise the Principal and Council on policy for student services offered in the College
•
Co-Curricular Sub-Committee – reviews, evaluates and approves College student activities and positions for the University’s Co-Curricular Record
