Editor’s Note
Iadore the romance of this season on the Sunshine Coast - winter on the water, hinterland hideaways (may I recommend Secrets By The Lake), layering local fashion to combat the cooler temps.
There is no time to retreat indoors in winter as the event calendar is full. Horizon Festival, Noosa Alive and Floating Land bring us the best of visual and performing arts; art meets fashion at the Australian Wearable Art Festival; foodies will delight in The Curated Plate and our wine lunch at Sole Restaurant; the film and television industry shines bright at Sunny Coast Showdown Showcase; and the Sunshine Coast Turf Club is off and racing with an action-packed agenda of racing.
It’s also a time to celebrate some milestones for business on the coast with iconic and award-winning Bella Venezia restaurant clocking up 40 years in business, Cool Art clocks up 25 years, Noosa Alive hits the stage in its 21st year, Ila + Ava skincare turns five and cheers to first birthdays for Illuminate Aesthetics and Sole Restaurant.
There’s so many reasons to frock up and swap the home heaters for an action-packed winter on the Sunshine Coast!

MICHAEL
The Director of Noosa Regional Gallery and Floating Land has been described as an ‘accidental curator’ as a prize-winning painter and sculptor who has moved from creating works to curating them. It all began when he opened The Trocadero Art Space in Footscray to build an arts community in the area. Sixteen years later it is still standing and we are lucky to now have him taking the arts to a whole new level in our region.
We would like to acknowledge and pay respects to the traditional owners, the Kabi Kabi and Jinibara people, whose country we create on and we would like to extend our respect to their elders, both past, present and emerging.

An ode to slow and sustainable fashion and a love letter to Nambour, the Sunshine Coat Project saw the culmination of 18 months’ worth of collaboration by Shaye Hardisty and Ketakii Jewson-Brown. Together with 11 other creatives, this visual feast included spontanteous dancing, deep reminiscence, musical interludes, and colour as a deep dive into the layers of place, memory, belonging, fashion - and Nambour.
they thought I should go to a proper school, but that didn’t work very well for me,” she said. “With the childhood I had, I struggled to stay sitting in a classroom all day.”
Instead, she dropped out at 16 and enrolled in Prép’Art, a preparatory education for entry into prestigious arts schools. Two years of artistic study and graduation passed, and Magali still found herself restless and low on funds.
With an urge to travel, she switched out her burgeoning art career for twenty years working as a private chef on sailboats.
Georgia Beard explores our cover artist’s ability to instil infinite stories in the gaze of a single portrait, creating a unique connection with every viewer.
FACE TOFace
Magali Feuga believes one face can tell a thousand stories.
On the walls of her coastal home, human faces and figures reach out from their canvases and murals with striking layers of emotion.
Their expressions and movements carry curiosity, energy, quiet strength and contemplation, illustrated with abstract colours and patterns.
These faces often become blank slates, a different story read from their emotions by every person who looks upon them – even the artist herself.
Magali has encountered a plethora
of story-filled faces in her lifetime, from her early childhood in New Caledonia to her immigration to the Sunshine Coast in 2018. From France to the Pacific Islands; the Caribbean and South America, her parents raised and home-schooled her on their nomadic houseboat.
Living in such a remote environment, she expressed herself with all the art supplies she could get her hands on and credits her passion for creativity to her father, a painter and wooden sculptor.
“When I was a teenager, my parents decided to go back to France because
Taught by her mother, she loved cooking for its similarities to art –balancing the ingredients, plating the food, sharing her creations with others – and she still found time to paint.
Throughout her travels, she encountered art styles from cultures around the globe, integrating elements into her own practice – then she fell in love with an Australian.
Making a new life on the Sunshine Coast, she could devote herself to art wholeheartedly and expand her space in the local art community.
After recently being part of The Neu Neu group exhibition at Red Hill Gallery, Magali is currently exhibiting as a finalist in The Doyles Art Award 2023 from 15 to 25 June and will showcase a collection of portraits during Stevens Street Gallery’s Be Still exhibition from 5 July to 27 August.
“I paint because it’s my way to communicate with people,” she said.
I don’t necessarily have the story in my mind when I paint, but I get to know these people that I’m painting. The face guides me into the story behind it.
“When I am walking in the street or when I talk to people, I always look at faces, and very often I think, ‘This one will make a really good painting.’
“I don’t think it’s a conscious process. It’s like when you are walking down one of the shopping streets, and one thing in a window will make you stop.
“I don’t necessarily have the story in my mind when I paint, but I get to know these people that I’m painting. The face guides me into the story behind it.”
With one face to inspire the foundation of her work, Magali disappears into her cramped, chaotic art studio and picks up a pencil for the base sketch.
“If I’m working with acrylic, the visual I’m looking for needs a lot of layers,” she said. “At first it looks pretty ugly, and it’ll look ugly for quite a long time.
“You can get discouraged by it. I work on a few paintings at the same time, because when I get stuck with one, or when I need to wait for the paint to dry, I move on to the next.
“When I like how it is and can’t see what else I can add, I know it’s finished. But some painters say a painting is never finished, it’s only abandoned – which is true, in a way.”
As Magali’s style evolved, she gravitated towards the visual impact of street art, from the eye-catching colours to the clean lines to the vast scale.
But unlike the often-political messaging of conventional street art, her pieces find power in portraying the
beauty of humanity.
This celebration of physicality emerges from her Dancer collection. After discovering filmed performances by notorious ballet dancer Sergei Polunin, Magali fell in love with the aesthetic beauty of his form and sought to capture his avant-garde energy on the canvas.
Translating to Fly Away, Envol Toi graces our front cover, catching the dancer in fluid, passionate movement.
From his arms raised in surrender to his downcast expression to the claw marks carved into his chest, Magali’s depiction implores us to unearth the story driving his dance.
The subjectivity of her portraits often leads to a diverse range of interpretations
– something Magali recognised when hundreds of visitors passed through her home during this year’s Open Studios Sunshine Coast.
“There will be something specific in that painting which talks to a specific person, and it’s not necessarily what I see,” she said.
“I will definitely try to create a certain attitude, but what people will imagine from it, I can’t control.”
Magali passes the responsibility to us. As we meet the gaze of every portrait, we don’t simply encounter a unique story – we come face to face with ourselves.

Bubble-wrapped, incapable of social interaction and addicted to dopamine hits from their screens – these stereotypes have shadowed Generation Z for the last decade.
Their disaffected predecessors often dismiss the contributions of young people. But this generation has a voice – a passionate, interconnected, inspiring voice that demands our attention.
They care deeply about their communities, envisioning a world where natural environments are nurtured and struggling minds are supported. If we give these young changemakers a chance to express themselves, this could be the future of the Sunshine Coast – a future that belongs to them.
Bringing their visions to life on multiple planes of existence, Sunshine Plaza’s inaugural Sunshine Arts Fest celebrates the creativity and ingenuity of these young minds.
Developed by teams of students in visual arts, graphic design, industrial design and technology, interactive art installations appear throughout Sunshine Plaza until 23 July.
Six local schools invested three months in the creative process with workshops from Sunshine Arts Fest Artist Ambassador Sarah Sculley, our cover artist from Autumn 2023.
Competing for a share in a $5000 prize pool, each artwork exists beyond the physical, harbouring a digital landscape visible through an app on our phones.
As tangible artistic expression unites with Augmented Reality (AR), each installation challenges and celebrates what it means to ‘Let the Sunshine In’.
Winding trails, meandering coastlines and glistening river systems decorate a piano, revealing how music and nature nourish our wellbeing; plastic waste collected from the community is recycled into a vibrant marine ecosystem, mimicking the polluted state of our oceans; interconnected sculptures follow a teenager’s mental health journey from all-consuming darkness to liberating light - just some of the scenes on offer.
Designed by St Andrews Anglican College, one installation collages the Sunshine Coast landscape, from coastal surf to Mount Coolum. In the virtual landscape, rainbow lorikeets soar over the scene, a dolphin leaps from the rushing water and rays of sunlight burst beyond the installation. Amidst the scene, small figures immerse in nature, form friendships and support one another – an illustration of community.
ART Generation
Georgia Beard reveals how a new generation of creatives came together to blend art and technology in a trail of interactive installations at Sunshine Plaza’s Sunshine Arts Fest.
After students volunteered to join the project, Head of Creative Industries Ben Hedstrom facilitated sessions for the team to interpret the theme and visualise the design.
“Part of the process involved looking at how we might incorporate some key artist influences,” he said. “We looked at honouring Matisse’s practice in the way he would use colour and painted paper samples that were cut up and collaged in a lot of his work. Then we looked at representations of the local landscape by Sunshine Coast artist Jack McCrae.”
From painting, cutting and glueing paper to drawing virtual layers of animation to writing artist statements, a diverse team of students combined their skills to construct the final piece.
Working with Caloundra State High School students, Team Leader Adam Baker found the collaboration between the Arts and Technologies departments to be the most rewarding outcome.
“I don’t think the art kids and the tech nerds get to hang out too much,” he said. “But once we broke the ice, it was great to see them creating together.”
His students experimented with ChatGPT for their message and while art students designed and assembled the artwork, tech students used their skills to program the interactive AR.
As they explored the relationship between physical and digital art, the team’s own connections strengthened.
Their final AR installation depicts an angelic figure standing in the clouds, whose wings catch fire and transform while wildflowers bloom to symbolise freedom from negativity, doubt and fear.
The entries can be discovered and viewed in Sunshine Plaza.
It’s our turn to uplift the voices of this generation!

SMALL BUSINESS IS big business
Now in its 28th year, the Sunshine Coast Business Awards are one of the state’s longest running business awards programs aimed at identifying and celebrating the many outstanding and innovative businesses that call the Sunshine Coast home.
In a region that is home to just over 400,000 people, 10 per cent of us are small business owners, with many of these local businesses providing jobs and employment to close to 169,000 locals.
Without small business these roles evaporate and our economy is impacted which is why choosing to support local businesses wherever you can is so crucial to the success of our region.
Buying and supporting local is something we do well as a region almost
as if it is ingrained in us. We connect, collaborate and find ways of working together because we know a “rising tide floats all boats” and if others succeed and draw attention to our region, this in turn creates more opportunities for all.
There are many organisations all over the coast who do a brilliant job of bringing together likeminded people and industries so that knowledge and learnings can be shared but also in a show of strength when organising interstate and international buyers and media to the region – why show them one outstanding business when you can show them many?
The business owners on the Sunshine Coast are a pretty special cohort which is why recognising the entrepreneurial
spirit and celebrating their ability to create and innovate is so important.
Every year the Sunshine Coast Business Awards invites entries from our local businesses from both the Noosa and Sunshine Coast regions to enter so that we can share their story and we can celebrate their success.
With 17 categories, the awards recognise the best of the best with the crowning moment being the announcement of Business of the Year.
We all know great businesses, so it is a nice way to let a business know that you appreciate their service and to show your support for what they do.
You can also enter the awards without having to be nominated and going through the process is a great reminder
Small business is the beating heart of the Sunshine Coast, and as Jennifer Swaine explains, every year the best of the best are recognised at the annual Sunshine Coast Business Awards.
of why you got into business in the first place - and a reminder of the great job you are doing to still be in business.
No strangers to winning awards, Bella Venezia has been recognised and awarded as winners in the Hospitality category, Large Business in 2021 and 2022.
Owners Kristine and Todd Young were thrilled to win this prestigious award two years in a row and will enter again this year with the aim of being inducted into the Hall of Fame.
Kristine said it had been a challenging few years for the industry so the wins were a great reward for all of the hard work and perseverance.
“We are so proud of our team and so grateful to our customers,” she said.
“Preparing our entry and going through the judging process was a great reminder of why we do what we do and what is important to us. It’s very worthwhile.”

Georgia Beard reveals how Altitude Scholarships is helping exceptional young Australians reach their potential since last year’s launch of the sponsored scholarship program.
As the sun sank over the Noosa River, business owners from every industry came together in support of one purpose – to raise talented young people to greater heights.
PROMISINGYoung
FUTURES
Celebrating the evolution of Altitude Scholarships, the Autumn Sundowners Soirée invited gifted students, sponsors and supporters to connect over a fundraising auction, light refreshments and canapés by Chef Matt Golinski.
New relationships were formed, success stories were shared, and supporters discovered exactly how their investments were transforming distant aspirations into achievable goals.
Altitude Scholarships has partnered with individuals and businesses to sponsor promising young futures since 2019, when CEO Tara Bell established the not-for-profit organisation, originally called Noosa Chances.
Expanding to interstate students and supporters, Altitude Scholarships now sponsors over 70 recipients from Noosa and Caloundra to Sydney and Wagga Wagga to Newstead, Hellyer and Hobart in Tasmania.
“The community’s support of our talented recipients has been extraordinary and astonishingly broadly based,” Tara said.
“There are local and interstate families supporting students as well as foundations and businesses, including the Brisbane-based Epic Good Foundation; Melbourne-based Bennelong Foundation and Qube; and Sydney-based fund managers Auscap Asset Management and Firetrail Investments.
“Altitude’s scholarships are unapologetically merit-based, which makes these young people who overcome so many additional hurdles in their educational journey and achievements so thoroughly inspiring to the community.”
At Autumn Sundowners, MC Sam Coward introduced guests to three outstanding young people supported by Auscap Asset Management, Macintyre Family and Dr Bradley Wong.
From neurology to marine biology to music, Parish, Piper and Jessica are passionately pursuing their chosen disciplines on paths made clear by their sponsors.
We’re just as passionate about fostering a younger generation of change-makers, providing scholarships for two local students through IN Noosa Magazine and Hello Sunshine Magazine
In addition to financial support, Madeline and Eva have enjoyed work experience on editorial and fashion shoots. Now Eva is completing a Bachelor of Arts / Business with majors
in Marketing and English, propelling her into a career in the publishing industry!
With a future secured through financial support, students experience a rise in self-esteem, a reduction in stress and anxiety, and a sustained rise in engagement in their learning.
In 2022, the Altitude Scholarships Recipient Wellbeing Survey found 100% of recipients agree or strongly agree that receiving an Altitude Scholarship increases their hope for the future and their motivation to work hard.
Compared to the Tell Them From Me survey norm of 76%, 81% of recipients also reported they like and accept themselves and are proud of their accomplishments – an increase from 74% in 2021.
Encouraged and confident, these students consistently apply themselves in their learning and plan to complete their final year of school – a sign we’re leaving our future in capable hands.
Initially supporting students with community donations and fundraising, Altitude commenced the sponsored scholarship program over a year ago and are now building their team and refining the business model as national and international interest grows.
“It is an exciting period as we bed

down our internal processes to ensure we are scalable and able to grow sustainably across Australia,” Tara said.
“We are thrilled to recently announce the appointment of two new Board members who will complement our existing team’s skill set extremely well and help catapult us into our next phase of maturity.”
President of the Australian Secondary Principals’ Association, Andrew Pierpoint, joins Altitude Scholarships as a Board Director with over 37 years of education experience in rural and remote communities through to regional and metropolitan schools; and Bruce Swan of
BDO Australia brings a wealth of experience as a Chartered Accountant, particularly through his work with not-for-profit and charity organisations, companies, and body corporates on the Sunshine Coast.
With an ever-expanding network of willing sponsors and mentors, Tara believes there’s no aspiration our younger generations can’t achieve.
“Altitude Scholarships would ultimately like to assist as many young people as we can – anywhere in the world – to reach their potential,” Tara said.
“It’s as simple as that.”

Damien says he met Rhonda 20 years ago “and my, does she have some of the most hilarious and unbelievable stories you can imagine!”
“I’ll never forget being stranded in a Brisbane hotel during the 2011 floods with Bert Newton, and we spoke for half an hour mostly about how much he loved and adored her, a real testament to this extraordinary woman,” Damien said.
So, what can audiences expect?
“A very honest, intimate conversation about my career which spans over 40 years,” Rhonda replied. “From some of the fabulous people I’ve had the opportunity to work with and perform for, including Princess Diana, former President Bill Clinton, and some wicked tales about some famous stars including Mickey Rooney Ann Miller and more.
“I’ll also be throwing in some of my favourite songs on this very special evening.”

“It holds a very special place in my heart too because charming Rodrigo and I were married at Hidden Cove on Noosa Main Beach ten years ago.
“I’ll be joined by my trio of Australia’s finest musicians, and we plan to play lots of everything including tracks from new album Dream of Life released last year, and landed in the top 10 Jazz and Blues chart that very week.
“Also, some fun upbeat Latin tunes that I recorded on my Cosita Divina album. It’s always a high energy set from me and my swinging trio, especially in beautiful Noosa!”

ART MEETS Fashion, DARLING!
Art meets fashion in a festival that could stand proudly alongside the iconic Paris Fashion Week or Met Gala. Carlie “wearable art lover” Wacker gets ready for one of the nation’s biggest and best Avant Garde art fashion events.
Australian Wearable Art Festival (AWAF) is an art and fashion immersion that will leave you inspired by the creativity of artisans and fashionistas and make you think twice about how we recycle and reuse everyday items and materials.
Every year since its inception in 2017, AWAF has grown to attract artists, fashion designers and creatives both on stage and in the crowd.
Founded by Wendy Roe and Helen Perry, the must-attend art fashion event has grown exponentially and with record submissions, 40 national and international works have now been chosen to walk the 27-metre-long catwalk in a show that may just blow your mind.
Curator Wendy Roe says the momentum around the event is palpable and has attracted serious talent.
“Our finalists hail from as far as Poland, Germany and the United States, as well as a continued strong representation from Queensland and the rest of Australia,” she enthuses.
“What makes this event so unique is the garments are made from a range of unlikely materials. Everything from ring pull tabs, bicycle tyres, flowers, teabags, feathers – any found object – and they are transformed into haute couture!”
The Festival has four main categories including Trashion, Sustainable Nature, Floriana; and Avant Garde with an Overall Winner, and accolades and prizes
for Emerging Artist and Best Headpiece.
I was lucky enough to be involved in the early years of AWAF where I took the proof sheets from printing IN Noosa Magazine to create a Papier-mâché dress and headpiece – it was one of the highlights of my life. Now that the competition is so intense, I am very happy to observe in awe this year.
“Last year we saw our Avant Garde and overarching Supreme Winners, Evita Camilleri and Dan Draper (known collaboratively as DerbyCross) deliver Water Memory for the Arid Soul,” Wendy
recalls. “It was two pieces made from garden hose and more than 2000 cable ties painstakingly weaved together.
“This combination of materials created spikes and spines which was almost reptilian in nature - and a sight to behold!”
Evita and Dan are a husband-andwife team who often collaborate on sculptural art pieces but it was a first time foray into the wearable art medium, with the couple even wearing the works themselves and creating a show-stopping performance that had the audience transfixed. They have been selected as finalists again this year so keep a lookout for their new creation.
This year, AWAF has announced that Fifi Colston will be joining the Festival as the international judge. Ms Colston was the winner of the Aotearoa Section and runner-up to the Supreme Award at the World of Wearable Art in 2022 in Wellington with fellow artist Bruce

Mahalski with their creation, Fera Dei - a piece intricately layered with animal bones and printed fabrics.
Ms Colston brings a wealth of experience and expertise as not only a wearable art designer and multiple Award-winner working as a costume and props maker for the film and television industry; but is also a well-known writer, illustrator, TV presenter and workshop facilitator. Kudos!
The event has outgrown its original venue in Eumundi and has expanded to include two evening runway shows, a matinee and a display of previous wearable artworks at the Caloundra Regional Art Gallery.
The Australian Wearable Art Festival promises to be a sensory explosion from the moment you enter the venue. It is sculptural art, meets high-end fashion, meets circular eco-chic goodness. It will change the way you view art and fashion and is in my opinion, the premiere event on the social calendar for 2023. Don’t miss it!

COMING TO LIGHT
Horizon Festival returns to illuminate the complex, interconnected stories of our communities through boundary-breaking arts and performance, with free and ticketed events for all ages and interests, as Georgia Beard discovers.
When Horizon Festival rises with the sun for its eighth year, light will fall upon the unknown faces of the Sunshine Coast. Voices, crowds, communities – those who have lingered too long in the shadows – now break their silence with creative and cultural expression. Their art creates deep-rooted connections to people and place, defying an increasingly divided and isolated society.
From Friday 25 August to Sunday 3 September, we’re immersing in each other’s lives with an innovative and contemporary arts program of music, storytelling, dance, theatre, visual art, installation and conversation.
Local, national and international artists will ask and answer, comfort and confront, scandalise and spellbind on unexpected stages from the coast to the hinterland.
Pitching at the Festival Hub in Cotton Tree Park again, Wonderland Spiegeltent
captures the enchantment of travelling performances inside its swooping curtains and stained-glass windows.
The Common People’s Dance Eisteddfod returns in a storm of sequins, sweat and spandex! Join dancers of all ages and abilities in over-the-top dance routines to some of the greatest hits of the ’80s and ’90s in homage to the legendary Rock Eisteddfods of the past.
Lose yourself in laughter with rapidfire stand-up at the Sunshine Coast Comedy Gala and feel the Spiegeltent run hot with adults-only circus shows of operatic and provocative cabaret!
After 10 years of selling out festivals worldwide, the Briefs boys are ready to air their Dirty Laundry in a night of intoxifying physicality, gob-smacking comedy, unapologetic truths and ridiculous showmanship!
ROUGE will deliver an equally outrageous blend of death-defying acrobatics, grandiose cabaret and deeply
twisted burlesque as their diverse troupe of performers subvert what it means to be sexy.
After these seductive spectacles, settle in for thought-provoking conversation with writer, broadcaster and feminist community builder Clementine Ford. Joined by Jandamarra Cadd, Jon Coghill, Wayne Parcel, Matt Golinski and one final speaker yet to be announced, Conversations with Men explores masculinity, vulnerability and the tender connection between men and their childhood selves.
Families can also immerse in their own circus escapades with the return of Circus Wonderland: A Neverland Adventure, bringing Peter Pan, Tinker Bell and the Pirates to life with astounding acrobatics and antics!
Explore a buzzing, humming hive of activity with Bees by Polyglot Theatre, experience shadow puppetry and animation in a two-woman physical
comedy, The Outhouse, and let the kids unleash their inner headbanger at the Junior Burger Rock Show with motorcycle riding funklords Burger Joint!
Spreading out from the Festival Hub, interactive projections, pop-up performances, visual art exhibitions and imaginative workshops will inspire creativity, collaboration and revelry!
Enjoy free live music with Live & Local in the Garden aboard the Troubadour Wagon, a perfect way to wind down and watch the sunset; or connect to percussive rhythm and powerful dance when Dancenorth Australia and the Horizon Festival Drumming Band unite to make NOISE
Discover natural and manmade leisure materials along Maroochy River for Let’s Organise Your Leisure and join artist Kathy Mackey to construct sculptural artworks of pool noodles and yoga mats for the Float-Off Finale!
At the heart of every festival experience is the desire for unity. This year, Horizon Festival will bring other celebrations into the fold, including Sunshine Sounds Festival on Saturday 2 and Sunday 3 September, this all-ages, family-friendly music festival puts homegrown artistry on stage with an allAustralian line-up at the Eumundi School of Arts Hall. Experience emerging and established musicians including some of Australia’s most prominent artists alongside Katie Noonan’s Eumundi School of Music rock band.
Horizon Festival also goes back to our roots with Homegrown: The Forgotten Coast, commissioning works from local artists across all art forms. After poking around abandoned buildings, dilapidated shopfronts and overgrown train tunnels, Horizon returned from their search with several fascinating projects reactivating forgotten spaces on the Sunshine Coast: The Blak Laundry by Dominique Chen and Libby Harward invites us into a functional laundromat to air our dirty linen with critical conversation, collaboration and a celebration of all things blak to discover that everything comes out in the wash; Labyrinth by choregrapher Chloe Keating is a dance theatre work performed in three historical bookshops and tells the story of two lonely booksellers towards the end of all things; and Nicole Voevodin-Cash and Teddy Horton will shine a light on the unseen and unknown art of manufacturers in one of our most invisible neighbourhoods, Kunda Park with Where to From Here, an exhibition of photography and sculptural works to tell the stories of the artisans hidden within our industrial estates.
As boundary-breaking events light up the region, Horizon Festival reflects the Sunshine Coast in all our diversity, eccentricity and vulnerability. It’s a celebration of soul-baring we need now more than ever.

With five powerhouse sets, it will be an unmissable event!
Here’s who’s playing:
Melanie Dyer – fresh from the Big Red Bash, Melanie will bring her signature style of country roots with pop influences like Katy Perry, Shania Twain and Taylor Swift. Her latest album Between You & Me includes hit singles like Run Out of Road, Cheap Moscato, Cheating on Me and Dumb Decisions Sounds like music we can all relate to!
The album earned Melanie two CMAA Golden Guitar Award nominations for Female Artist of the Year and Collaboration
of the Year in January 2023.
Andrew Swift has released three #1 ARIA albums and earnt three CMAA Golden Guitar Awards, including Artist of the Year in 2023. With his music described as a “gateway drug to Country music,” this former pop-punk guitarist has firmly established his roots with retro soundscapes and contemporary rhythms and is a master performer. From nostalgic tales with hits like Young Lovers, reminiscing on The Good Old Days or sharing Country music’s wilder side with Cheap Liquor and Smoke ‘em If You Got ‘em, his songs brood on gutwrenching heartache and revel in limitless joy.
Gympie girl Caitlyn Shadbolt has been lauded as ‘one to watch’ since placing fifth on the sixth season of The X Factor Australia. Her 2017 debut album Songs on My Sleeve hit #1 on the ARIA Country Album chart and saw her win the CMC Award for Best New Artist, along with a nomination for Female Artist of the Year. Dubbed “the darling of Country Music”, expect to also hear hits from Caitlyn’s sophomore album Stages and recently released album Bloom & Surrender
Pete Cullen blazes his soulful outlaw country trail with hard rockin’ shows full of sweat and swagger. The former Noosa resident has released five albums, performed at various festivals and is a regular on national radio and television. He and his songs are raw and real, a testament to his wild heart and honest
soul. His groovin’ southern gospel track Peace Love premiered on Double J and featured on Triple J Roots N All; his 2022 single, Heavy Damage is described as a “high energy Outlaw Country Rock N Roll BANGER” and his latest single Heart of Steel is dedicated to the truckers that keep Australia moving and the family and loved ones they leave behind.
Liam Brew first got his hands on a guitar at age of five when his family moved to the Sunshine Coast. Fifteen years later, he was named the 30th Toyota Star Maker, joining previous
winners Lee Kernaghan, James Blundell & Keith Urban. His debut album, Wild Heart earned him a placement in the 2010 CMAA for New Talent Of The Year with subsequent singles all enjoying chart success and scoring three nominations in the CMC Music Awards. The proudlymulletted singer/songwriter and Golden Guitar Finalist has performed at some of Australia’s biggest festivals including Tamworth Country Music Festival, Optus National Music Muster and Urban Country Music Festival.
Sunshine Coast Councillor David Law
said the Coastal Country Music Fest would be a wonderful addition to the range of events at Venue 114.
“Music has a way of bringing people together and locals love live music. This exciting new event will be sure to have everyone kickin’ up their heels,” he said.

The first half of the year has seen a fabulous array of theatre with the youth of the Sunshine Coast leading the way!
The opportunities for them to shine are apparent and the hard work of their directors, choreographers and production teams support these amazing endeavours.
BYTES - Buderim Youth Theatre of Excellence presented the much-loved Pride and Prejudice; the edgy Dracula; and an enormously popular season of Disney’s Tarzan, complete with aerial silks and a 15 piece band!
High production values in Tarzan were apparent, transforming the Buderim Memorial Hall in to an ever-changing jungle as Tarzan climbed high above the Buderim stage to music by Phil Collins.
Audiences were captivated by an exceptional cast who swung, sung and danced their way through this rarely performed and technically intricate musical. It was a knockout season!
Another fabulous musical production in the month of May was Stephen Schwartz’s Pippin, produced by Pacific Lutheran College under the direction of Janine Delaney at the Caloundra Events Centre. The talents of this ensemble cast were outstanding, with Kai Sorbello as Pippin, leading the way in this revival version of the show, set inside a circus
STATE OF Play
Whether it is amateur theatrical companies enriching their local communities with plays, youth theatres creating high quality performances including classics and musicals, or new entrepreneurial companies kickstarting exciting productions, the Sunshine Coast has a wealth of theatre experiences available to all. Robyn Ernst shares the state of play for youth theatre in our region.
tent with accompanying tricks and flair. It was full of colour, expert choreography and brilliant teamwork as Pippin tried to find life’s meaning. This talented cohort of students are destined to delight us in future productions.
LITTLE SEED based at Noosa gave audiences a stellar Taming of the Shrew this year as part of its Shakespeare at the Lake program, a popular annual event on Lake MacDonald at the Noosa Botanic
Gardens Amphitheatre. The gorgeous setting and the emerging artists from Little Seed, under the direction of Johanna Wallace, means that entertainment is on offer and there are always several outstanding performers who are on their way to bright careers in the arts. Shows to come include Peter Pan Jr and Spamalot
Other showstopping schools bringing the arts into focus included Matthew
Flinders Anglican College, who performed After Juliet by Sharman MacDonald; Sienna Catholic College who presented 13 The Musical; and Good Shepherd Lutheran College who gave colour and excitement to their production of Charlie & The Chocolate Factory at the J Noosa.
Sometimes it’s difficult discovering all the fabulous theatre being performed by our younger people, but if you make the effort to attend, you will be pleasantly surprised and more often amazed by what these performers can accomplish and the exciting works their production teams are bringing to the local stages.
With the likes of Sunny Coast Showdown bringing awareness and funding to projects for local talent in the film and television industry and performing arts and cultural events like Horizon Festival continuing to grow, it is a very exciting time for young performers and crew. Watch this space!

For co-owners and siblings Bree Prince and Tim Norris growing up in Noosa was idyllic – surfing and boating, making the most of our beautiful waterways and beaches.
Like Bree, Tim made the decision to relocate his family back to Noosa (to be with the extended crew) ten years ago.
“We had a fantastic childhood growing up here and that was the number one reason that Timmy and I wanted to come back and raise our families here,”
Bree said.
Bree and husband Scott have three gorgeous children; Tim and his wife Eva have two little cuties and gathering them together onboard the boat to chat and take photos you could feel the love.
Upon moving back, they had no idea they would end up owning a hospitality business - but that’s where the story of Catalina begins.
As they spent time on the river, sharing their experience with their children, they began to take more notice of MV Catalina – it’s been on the Noosa River for around 20 years.
Over time, they started to imagine the possibilities of transforming the ugly duckling into something more luxurious.
A place for locals and visitors to enjoys parties and weddings like nothing else that was available. The dream had begun.
“We travelled aboard up to Lake Cootharaba and took in our first sunset over the water and knew that this was going to be something special,” Bree said. “Somewhere for everyone to enjoy great music, cocktails and good food while feeling like a VIP.
“Even as locals, we’d never experienced this before and it was incredible. So, that’s where we started.”
Seeing beyond the doubters and many attempting to talk them out of it, the siblings forged ahead with their vision.
They strongly believed their idea would add value to the Noosa community and disagreed that an ‘ageing’ Noosa population was not the market for this type of experience.
I remember the beginning very well – it felt like there was a new culture of
youth and a different coolness coming to town but Bree says their inaugural cruise was quiet.
“They were mostly family and friends who came aboard our first event and even they probably had their own doubts about what we’d set out to do,” Bree said. “But it only took a couple of weeks to catch on.
“From 16 people in week one to 60 people in week two and then months of sell-out events following that.”
Catalina Noosa was slowly cruising to success.
“We knew it was always going to be a lot of hard work and we started out serving the food and behind the bar, doing what we could to make it work,” says Tim. “It’s a complex operation. A lot of people don’t realize what it takes just to actually get the boat off the wharf.”
The people want all that Catalina Noosa can offer so the business is set to grow even more with epic plans in the works!
“We have some awesome food and drink collaborations coming up,” Bree shares. “We will continue to offer our spectacular sunset cruises with dancing and cocktails plus introduce our long lunches on the water.
“Winter is a really beautiful time to enjoy the river so our lunches will provide the same Catalina experience but more refined and relaxed.”
Catalina Noosa is the perfect venue for weddings, your next corporate function, launch or special event.

Three great professionalgrade products are now available to you at most independent supermarkets locally or direct from the Nutworks factory in Yandina. I’ve also thrown in a couple of my other favourite native flavours into the mix.”

DELICIOUSLY Different!
The Dee Den x Sunshine & Sons lunch was an affair to remember with wild cocktails matched to Dee Den’s deliciously different cuisine. John Caruso devoured the delightful flavours on offer.
Local produce with creative flair was on show when Dee Den and Sunshine & Sons came together to present a feast that was deliciously different! We knew this lunch was never going to be boring and it did not disappoint!

Just add your own choice of cocktails!

As winter comes to Flo’s Crêperie, owner Florian Guillemard reimagines memories of comfort food from his native France to deliver new dishes and dining events, Georgia Beard reveals.
COMFORTCrêpes
As leaves break away from their branches and snow smothers French soil, the staff at Flo’s Crêperie remember retreating into their homes for heart-warming food and good company.
Their childhoods in winter-clad France were marked by gatherings with friends and family, glasses of mulled wine and rich dishes melting with butter, cream, cheese and fresh meats.
Now settled in Mooloolaba Wharf and Noosa, owner Florian Guillemard and his team have folded these memories into the crêpes and galettes featured on their new winter menu.
As we rug up in our layers and crank up our heaters – because us locals can’t handle the temperature dropping below 20°C – we’re invited to come in from the cold at Flo’s Crêperie.
Combining beloved flavours from both French and Australian cuisine, Flo’s comforting dishes encourage us to make our own memories of winter feasts.
Paired with mulled wine, Flo’s will serve winter-themed specials including slow-roasted duck confit; truffle galettes; and ‘La Tartiflette’ - an alpine galette oozing with Reblochon cheese.
“Reblochon is a semi-soft, washed rind and smear ripened mountain cheese,” Florian enthuses. “It’s usually served baked over potatoes, caramelised onions and bacon in what can only be described as a gooey, creamy and comforting baked casserole.
“Our classics are also perfect for a cool evening, especially our winter bestseller ‘Flo’s Alpine Cheese’, which also has bacon, raclette cheese, caramelised onions and potatoes.
“Raclette is an alpine-style Swiss cheese dish we love as it brings up so many fond memories of the French Alps and raclette parties – we’re known for hosting a mean raclette party at home!
“Traditionally, you place a raclette grill in the centre of the table, and everyone melts their slices of cheese in miniature frypans.
“When the cheese has melted, you pour it over boiled potatoes, a selection of cured meats and a green salad – all to be enjoyed at a leisurely pace with plenty of good wine and long chats among great friends.”
The kitchen has also added a galette dish inspired by the big brekkies of their favourite beachside cafés.
‘La Grande’, translating to ‘The Big One’, is the ideal après-winter surf indulgence with two eggs, chorizo, bacon, mushrooms and tomato relish.
“Of course, our flambée crêpes are perfect for any occasion, but they’re especially popular in winter – the little shot of Grand Marnier on fire is the perfect warming treat,” Florian added.
In the kitchen, he experiments with his native comfort foods, such as beef bourguignon and veal blanquette, and adapts their recipes to suit his crêpes and galettes.
“We all have our own idea of what comfort food means, but for us, it’s food that feels warm, filling, cosy, safe,
nurturing and basically, like home – and that’s the best way to describe a crêpe!
“Everything is warm and home-cooked in a crêpe and served on a hot plate with a warm sauce – it’s the perfect way to feel snug and put a smile on your face on the cold days.”
Uniting comfort and creativity, Flo’s Crêperie just introduced seasonal Tasting Dinners, revolutionising crêpes, galettes and cider in a stimulating experience for both kitchen and customers.
The first in the series, Go with the Flo, has been a sell-out success. Florian designed the four-course tasting menu in collaboration with Executive Chef François Poulard, a long-time friend
whose career has carried him through renowned kitchens in France, Belgium, Switzerland, the UK and Sydney.
Experimenting with the form of crêpes, the menu featured oysters with cider jelly, Mooloolaba king prawns and cured ocean trout; a modern take on duck à l’orange; François’s pâté en croûte; a scallop and mushroom tart with a cider beurre blanc; homemade gnocchi with a
twist; and a crêpe cake to finish.
Florian and his team will continue to host Tasting Dinners throughout the year, and they won’t be the only events taking over both Mooloolaba and Noosa restaurants!
Flo’s French patriotism will be on full display when they celebrate Bastille Day for the second year, featuring Frenchthemed specials, music, vibes and spot prizes to be won! Ooh la la!
“We love it when people come together around the table and leave with full bellies and great memories,” Florian said. “So bring your beret and come and get Francey with us!
“Crêpes are always a special family experience, because kids, parents and grandparents all love them, and seeing families gathering around the table enjoying good food reminds us of home.”

PODCAST + P inot
There’s no denying that Hello Sunshine Magazine loves local flavours and creations, particularly when it comes to the abundant food and drinks on offer on the Sunshine Coast.
Last year, we brought our Everyone Has a Story: Conversations from the Sunshine Coast and Noosa podcast to life with the sell-out Podcast and Pinot at Market Bistro as part of The Curated (side) Plate.
This year, we welcome four new podcast panellists at the Coast’s hottest new venue, The Doonan.
Hear from Rob Comiskey of the family-owned Comiskey Group, developers of The Doonan and multiaward-winning venues including Sandstone Point Hotel and Eatons Hill Hotel; Actor, comedian and radio star Sam Coward; global DJ Superstar and ARIA chart topper DÉ SAINT; and OzHarvest Sunshine Coast founder, Sunshine Coast Citizen of the Year and recipient of a 2023 Australian Order of Australia Medal, Michele Lipner OAM. Hosted by our podcast interviewer and former radio personality John Caruso, the event promises to be entertaining, inspirational and insightful - and raise some much-needed funds for OzHarvest.
The Doonan Head Chef Wayd Bailey has embraced the opportunity to create a bespoke menu for Podcast + Pinot that truly showcases the local flavours.
Originally training with French chef Jean Marc Pollet at Peppers Hotel Group in Port Stephens, Wayd learnt the art of fine dining cooking for A-listers before moving to Noosa as Sous Chef for Berardo’s on the Beach, followed by Berardo’s Noosa and working at Noosa Food & Wine Festival. He has run a cooking school at Belmondos in Rene St and worked as Head Chef at Miss Moneypenny’s; Executive Chef for the Solbar Group including Piano Bar and La Canteena; and has been part of the Tony Kelly group on venues including Saltwater. Wayd says the food direction at The Doonan has always been on regional food and doing justice to the architecture, landscape and flavours of the area.
Supported by a team with heritages from the likes of Thomas Corner Eatery and Bistro C and including well-known Noosa chef Glenn Bowman, Wayd said the opportunity to create a bespoke menu was very appealing.
“We have so much respect for the local
produce and for local producers so are very excited to present a special menu that will let the local flavours shine in a creative and engaging way,” he said. Some of Wayd’s favourite local ingredients that might star include Mooloolaba Prawns, Yellowfin Tuna, Bendele Farm duck, 9-score Gina Rinehart Wagyu beef, Noosa Reds, Kenilworth Truffle Brie, Urban Valley Mushrooms, Pomona Honey and natives such as Bunya Nut and Rosella.

Bravo and grazie!
Coffee has a rich history, a complex chemistry, and a variety of effects on the human body and mind. For many, it’s more than just a drink; it’s a ritual, a social lubricant, a source of energy, and a pleasure.
John Caruso meets two locals responsible for the smoothest double espresso he’s ever tasted.
THE BEANS, THE BLEND the brew!
Tucked into the corner at the front of a shared working space in Sippy Downs is a small counter with a few chairs and tables bathed in warm winter sunshine. Names are called and coffee lovers collect their favourite cup from the smiling barista.
Kate and Ben Saultry started Bunker Specialty Coffee Co. about seven and a half years ago.
“Bunker is our brand and Veneziano is our roasting partner. We distribute from Bribe Island to Agnes Water and we’re the sole distributors for Veneziano locally with a big talent pool in Melbourne that we can draw on,” she said.
That pool includes roasters like Jack Allisey who was the first Australian to ever compete in the World Coffee Roasting Championships and there’s the current Australian Roasting Champion,
Daniel Shadbolt. That’s a cool pool!
According to Kate, we’re currently experiencing our third coffee wave.
“The first wave was back in the 1950s in Melbourne for example, with immigrants brewing coffee that they brought out from Italy,” she said.
“Then there was a second wave of coffee with lots of big commercial brands that used cheap, low-grade beans to satisfy coffee drinkers at that time.
“Now we’re right at the front of the third wave. Some might call it hipster coffee, baristas with man buns, if you want to put it that way.”
Park that thought of the cool kid behind the machine in your favourite café for a moment and let’s take a deep dive into exactly what is happening with coffee in 2023.
“It all starts at the farm and then
it’s graded,” explains Ben. “There’s certain standards that we must meet and then there’s a cupping score, and our coffee is always highly scored and that comes down to how it’s grown, how it’s roasted and how it’s taken care of. So, the cupping score is imperative when it comes to specialty coffee.”
Brands you see on supermarket shelves are all commercial grade, which means they’re graded below a score of 80. Anything above that mark is then considered specialty coffee, which is what Veneziano supplies to Kate and Ben.
“Coffee is a dark art,” says Ben. “It’s complex and the industry keeps moving forward. Veneziano is mixing different beans together to produce different blends and then there’s roasting temperatures and length of roasting time. It’s a science and an art form.”
Australia has been forging ahead
developing a great reputation as a coffee drinker’s paradise. After a recent trip to New York, I certainly agree!
“We’re absolutely at the top,” Kate says. “Melbourne specialty coffee has a huge reputation around the world. New Zealand is closely tracking along with us and in America, Portland and Seattle are developing a big specialty coffee scene. There are many new companies and countries coming along however, everyone’s eyes are on us here in Australia.”
For Ben, it comes down to our culture and how we live our lives.
“We’re early risers, especially on the Sunshine Coast we’re hitting cafés earlier and earlier,” he said. “When we go out to a restaurant there’s a certain standard and that’s helped to lift expectations of what a ‘good’ coffee should taste like.
“Consumers demand a good coffee and I think it just suits the Aussie culture and how we go about living our lives. Coffee just fits into that so well.”
If you’re not geographically close to Bunker Specialty Coffee Co. in Sippy Downs, then spotting a location that serves Veneziano will bring you that step closer to experiencing that perfect cup.
I’ve been a coffee drinker for decades. It’s a constant journey. For me it’s a short black, no sugar, and Veneziano’s Soar blend featuring three different beans is next level! Smooth and delicious.
“With the distribution side of our business, we don’t want to be everywhere,” Kate explains.
“We like the idea of having only one customer in a suburb. We diligently choose who we partner with because
we want great accounts with great businesses, we don’t want our brands to be a ‘flash in the pan’.
“The businesses pouring our coffee need to be people that love and respect coffee and the number one thing for me is training the baristas.”
Ben said there were a set of rules and standards that they follow.
“That’s another favourite part of my job, teaching someone how to make a great cup of coffee,” he said.
“Getting your coffee made the same way every single time, irrespective of who’s operating the machine.”
Roast ‘em, grind ‘em, brew and enjoy.
Like a fine wine or a carefully distilled spirit, coffee has a history, complexity and story that keeps drinkers constantly searching and sipping for the perfect cup of Joe.

Since launching at the beginning of Covid, the momentum that CAVU Distilling has established with its Nil Desperandum Rum and Sunshine & Sons Gin, Vodka and Liqueurs is phenomenal. It springs from lofty ambitions – sure, but they have built a great business with nous, hard work and downright ballsiness.
More recently, they partnered with Proof Drinks Australia to take their products across Australia and to the world and they have just released the latest Nil Desperandum ‘Special’, a delicious Australian Certified Organic rum with the aim of getting people to RETHINK RUM™, setting the benchmark for others to follow.
Due to requiring a minimum two years of aging prior to release to legally be labelled ‘rum’, the lead time takes a while from being a thought bubble to actually ending up in the bottle.
NEXT LEVEL
Spirits
Not content with world domination as a gin producer the team at CAVU Distilling have launched their alter ego rum, Nil Desperandum, and are well on the path to achieving stratospheric targets on a national level, as Tony Cox discovers.
The launch of the Nil Desperandum Special Rum sees the release of Australia’s first certified organic rum, being made from wild fermented, locally sourced molasses, Woombye water, dunder and muck. Given we associate organic with being beneficial to good health I will let the reader reach their own conclusions.
The Special features toffee and brûlée notes, is quite delicate being more light-medium bodied, with a smoky, charry finish from the barrels previously used by bourbon producers.
Bourbon barrels are subjected to a very high level of toasting for use in bourbon production and are used once only. After that they are sold off.
Given oak generally imparts flavour for its first three fills that char continues with the subsequent fill along with the vanilla notes which American oak naturally imparts.
To me this is a sipping rum to be savoured at the end of the night with a cube of ice and enjoyed slowly.
If you take your rum with cola I would suggest a more subtle, less overtly sweet, Fever Tree Cola so it doesn’t overpower the subtlety of the rum with a wedge of lime squeezed and thrown into the glass just to keep it all fresh.
Also new to the Nil Desperandum rum family is the Botanical Rum with aromas of sweet spices and coffee pre-dominant.
It utilises the same organic molasses of the Special but the botanicals don’t have organic certification. The alcohol warmth is more to the fore with spice evident on the palate with the presence of greater viscosity than the Special
They are simply two very different rums, both equally enjoyable.
As discussed with Brand Ambassador,
Kayan, the Special is best suited to cocktails where the spirit is the emphasis. Think replacing the role of bourbon or rye in a Manhattan or Old Fashioned.
For the Botanical Rum, Kayan says it is best suited in cocktails where juices and bolder mixers are involved, think Mai Tais and the like.
A quick look around the barrels I spied some port-fill and sherry-fill barrels which are being used to impart further complexities in other rums under development.
I guess the only way to keep abreast of everything these trailblazers are doing is to keep going to their distillery door to discover what’s new.
Overall, two fantastic rums released from Queensland leading into winter and not a polar bear in sight. Make sure you track a bottle of each of these down.
BEAUTYSensory
You probably have it already, you just don’t realise it happens without you knowing but now it has a name, a tagline and it’s a real thing! Katrina Thorpe delves into the world of ‘Sensory Beauty’.
The look, feel and aroma of our products is an important factor in what we choose to use. Have you ever thought about why certain aromas or the look or feel of a product appeals to you?
Does the style and feel of a product remind you of something, somewhere or someone. Does the aroma lift you up or calm you down. Perhaps it’s also the reason you don’t purchase something?
We all seek products that deliver results for our skin and body but there’s a trend taking over the beauty world, endeavouring to transport us to a better, more relaxed place.
It’s been coined ‘Sensory Beauty’ and it’s mostly about the aromas in our skincare routines and I personally also choose products that suit my style of bathroom, or feel good to apply.
It is all about what appeals to the senses - how the look, feel and aroma of our beauty products can have a positive
effect on our state of mind, while at the same time protecting, nourishing, restoring, healing, calming or rejuvenating our body.
Encouraging several senses to be tapped into all at once to help us embark on a calming journey for our bodies, minds and souls is what I see emerging with renewed focus and awarenessexpect to see ‘Sensory Beauty’ branded and promoted in the near future.
For as long as we have been using skincare products, aromas such as lavender, rose and geranium have been ingredients that multi-task to help skin, but they were not promoted for the effects they might have on our minds.
Sensory Beauty is also about touch and it’s as simple as taking a little time to slowing down our skincare routines, paying attention to our senses in the process.
Feel the touch of your hands as they slowly massage a product on your skin.
My favourite products to do this with include my facial cleanser, body wash and moisturiser where I take deliberate time with soothing, slow massage to apply to my skin.
When shampooing my hair, I take time to massage my scalp, especially when applying conditioner. Close your eyes and breathe in the aroma as the steam of the shower surrounds you,
it’s an experience, not a chore to wash your hair this way.
For many years I have used a lemongrass invigorating body wash to shower in the morning.
It’s a great way to wake up and start the day but for a more calming shower in the evening I prefer a soft floral aroma to wash away the day and calm my mind.
Why not have a choice of body washes? It doesn’t cost any more, they just take longer to use both.
I’m excited about this renewed
awareness of Sensory Beauty because it’s always been there, but I feel it’s relevant now in bringing a wellness connection to our senses through products designed to be kind to your skin while contributing to your overall wellbeing, relaxation and rejuvenation.
Your body hears and feels what your mind says and it’s a reminder for ourselves that beauty is sensory and that we are worth the time for daily selfcare as well as making the time to be cared for by beauty professionals who have been trained to soothe your senses.
Close your eyes and breathe in the aroma as the steam of the shower surrounds you...
DURING WINTERMindfulness
Jackie Hillegers shares her top tips for taking advantage of the changing season to prepare our bodies and minds for renewal.
Nature never fails to amaze me with its advanced preparation for each season.
Autumn has officially passed the baton to winter with a sudden drop in temperature and having completed its annual mission of turning lush green leaves into a pile of surface crimsons, auburn or amber, it can now take a backseat.
This is all part of mother nature’s renewal process, as crisp fallen leaves eventually break down, depositing nutrients back into the soil preparing for the new growth that will come with spring.
We can mindfully think of our own bodies in terms of seasons and spend time in winter doing prep work on ourselves. Imagine each of your unwanted thoughts or stuck emotions as a leaf; visualise that leaf changing colour, which could represent losing its control over you as it makes its way out of your body, allowing room for more positive thoughts.
Did you know that around 90% of our energy is used on suppressing our
trapped emotional baggage? So use winter as an internal method of preparation for all the growth that is coming your way in spring.
Spring can be the time that you work on sprouting new ideas, welcoming new beginnings and working on positive growth. Get back to joy, playfulness and self-connection as you awaken from your static state.
Like a seed you must persist in allowing the unknown to happen, relinquish control and step out of your comfort zone. When we become too
comfortable, we forget to push ourselves in order to grow. Each season has a reason!
That is not to say that the winter blues will not tap us on the shoulder and the more time we spend at home or inside allows the winter blues to creep in.
Our moods can dip and our thoughts tend to deepen. A lack of the sunshine drug Vitamin D may be one of the reasons, but just remember that by practicing mindfulness and making ourselves aware of when our moods are feeling low, we can also change them.
Winter has so many exciting mindfulness practices we can embrace. Some examples are:
MINDFUL EATING – We tend to eat less salads and more hearty foods during winter. Simmering soups or slow-cooked meals can release aromas throughout the house, creating a sense of comfort and homeliness. Use your five senses when eating and appreciate how and where your meal has come from. Eat small mouthfuls and chew your food to enjoy its flavours. Food can be so much more enjoyable in winter when we take the

time to appreciate it from all angles.
REFLECTION TIME – There is nothing better than getting into warm pjs at the end of the day and snuggling under a blanket. Instead of turning on the TV or scrolling through your phone, try to get into the habit of lighting a candle, turning on soft music and spending time deconstructing your day and unwinding.
You can practice exhaling your unwanted thoughts, choosing moments in your day you were proud of or thinking how grateful you are for your loved ones. Positive thinking can reduce depression, pain and helps build a greater resistance to illness.
STRETCHING AND YOGA – Yoga, pilates and stretching can be a relaxing way to start or end your day. Give your body the attention it needs and use this as a relaxing way to say ‘thank you’ to your body and mind.
HOT CHOCOLATE OR TEA – There is nothing better than wrapping your fingers around a mug of steaming hot goodness. Sitting outside in the fresh air or gazing out a window in the morning is mindfulness in action. The steam from the hot drink warms your nostrils and each small sip can be felt internally, making its way through your body.
Sipping hot chocolate around a firepit
WINTER WISHLIST
with floating marshmallows is next level!
NATURE WALKS – Winter is a beautiful time of the year to walk. Without leaves on the trees you are more exposed to the sun which can increase your Vitamin D levels. Why not microdose your outings by taking smaller and more frequent walks and engage your senses to see, smell or hear what is happening around you.
If it is raining outside you can still forest bath at home. Your brain does not know the difference between visualisation and reality so if you imagine walking through the forest, assisted with forest music, your mind can believe you are actually there!
Winter can be an excellent time to perform much-needed maintenance on ourselves.
Take the time to shift your awareness into winter maintenance mode; create your own mind fertilizer in preparation for growth; use gratitude to savour precious moments; rebel against negative thoughts; and practice well deserved self-care to remedy your low mood.
Preparation is key so don’t think of winter as cold and depressing, think of it as taking the time to work more on ourselves so by spring you are ready to bloom.
• Work extra hours in winter, and have more time off in summer
• Spend winter at the gym or pilates studio getting beach-ready
• Listen to podcasts, music and meditations
• Educate yourself in a new language or activity
• Plan your vegetable garden in advance for Spring
• Journal or work on yourself – everyone can improve
• Enjoy relaxing and organising hearty pot-luck dinners with friends
RETREAT TO Reset
The Mojo Maker Nikki Fogden-Moore shares how the power of being offline can nurture productivity in a burnout-prone world and how retreats can provide a strategic and personal reset.
Twenty years ago I took eight CEOs and managers away to Spain to the stunning Kempinski Hotel, for what I then called “The Bodibreak©”.
A retreat away for personal and professional alignment, space to think and take stock of the importance of health and mindset, as well as the wealth they had been striving to create for many years in high paced careers.
Vitality, goal setting and above all else - the permission to actually think about themselves. Fast track to today and the stunning Sunshine Coast has been the home to our Boardroom Retreats® for over a decade.
Now “retreating” is cool from wellbeing, yoga, cooking, hiking, strategic, corporate groups and even silent retreats - there is something for everyone. So how do you make the time to ‘retreat’ and why is this so important?
In a society where constant connectivity is integral, the idea of purposefully disconnecting may seem counterintuitive. However, taking the time to step away from the digital and ‘our usual’ world allows us to nourish our minds, bodies, and souls.
Retreats offer a sacred sanctuary where we can escape the distractions of everyday life and immerse ourselves in reflection and personal growth. They don’t have to be hard core, detox - they can be a space for checking in on your own vision of what great looks likewithout distraction.
We know recent research has shed light on the detrimental effects of chronic stress and burnout, highlighting the urgent need for retreats as a transformative tool for mental and physical rejuvenation.
A reset.
These findings serve as a constant wake-up call, reminding us of the critical importance of prioritising self-care and seeking a strategic and personal reset.
It’s up to individual action. We understand the importance of work/life blend. Nobody can do this for you.
It’s about giving yourself permission to press reset and invest in that much needed time for vision, values and vitality to be realigned.
Here are three reasons why ‘retreating’ can be an essential tool in creating sustainable success and happiness in work and in life.
THE TRANSFORMATIVE POWER OF RETREATS:
Well run retreats offer an oasis of solace in a world of perpetual motion.
They provide a sacred space for introspection, relaxation, and profound reconnection with ourselves. By temporarily stepping away from the chaos of our professional lives, we give ourselves permission to heal, grow, and recalibrate our priorities.
Retreats act as incubators for creativity and clarity, fostering personal and professional growth. In this sanctuary of renewal, we can shed the weight of stress and embrace a more positive and productive outcome.
THE SCIENCE BEHIND RETREATS:
Research by the American Council of Medicine has shown that retreats have a tangible impact on our mental and
physical well-being. Studies indicate that spending time in nature, engaging in meditation, and participating in mindfulness practices during retreats can significantly reduce stress levels, improve cognitive function, and enhance overall performance.
PERSONAL RESET: NURTURING THE LEADER WITHIN:
Whatever your role in life, whether you’re in business or not, we are all leaders. It’s easy to neglect our personal wellbeing while tirelessly striving for success. Retreats provide a sacred space for self-reflection and personal growth.
By engaging in activities that promote self-care, such as wellness practices, physical activities, and nurturing connections, leaders can rebuild their mental and physical reserves.
If you’re running a business, strategic resets are paramount to sustained success. Offering a unique vantage point for introspection and evaluation.
By temporarily stepping away from the day-to-day operations, we can gain perspective and clarity, evaluate goals, assess market trends, and explore innovative strategies.
The intentional pause of a retreat allows for strategic realignment and fosters the cultivation of fresh ideas and perspectives.
Whatever style of offline from day to day you select - retreats offer moments of self-discovery foster resilience, enhance emotional intelligence, and cultivate a healthy work-life blend.
This reset allows people to tap into their authentic selves, fostering a sense of purpose and fulfillment that can radiate into all areas of life.
Select the right type of retreat for you - it could be just about wellness, an activity or solitude - or it could be a blend of health, strategy and mindset like our retreats - whatever you feel drawn to there are many wonderful options to combine a stunning location with a purpose led time out.
The combination of immersive experiences, like-minded individuals, and expert guidance creates a holistic environment conducive to growth and rejuvenation. The opportunity to unplug, replenish our energy reserves, and rediscover our sense of purpose.

BODYWizardry AT WARANA
Carlie Wacker reveals the magical treatments that are changing the shapes - and lives - of Sunshine Coast residents.
When I first discovered there was a way to custom-sculpt my body in less than 30 minutes my scepticism was abounding. Normally if something seems too good to be true – it is. So, I headed to Illuminate Aesthetics to put the truBody Custom Body Sculpting treatment to the test on my abdomen and the magic is real people – there is true wizardry at Warana!
Each truBody treatment plan is customised for the individual and I began with one 15-minute fat melting session followed by four sculpting treatments, three days apart.
According to the brochure, truBody Custom Body Sculpting can reduce fat
and tone muscle using non-invasive monopolar radiofrequency treatment.
My first session was with Elaine Barclay – a former nurse from the UK with incredible experience and amazing hair. You know you are in good hands when the treatment is being conducted by a woman with such extensive experience and understanding of anatomy.
In fact, most of the staff at Illuminate Aesthethics have nursing and medical backgrounds which provides clients with much more professionalism and confidence.
Elaine (with the amazing hair) explained the truBody treatment as a system that could reduce fat and tone
muscle in a 30-minute session.
“These are super clever machines,” she said. “truSculpt is the fat melting machine and is a 15-minute treatment that uses radio frequency that travels through the skin to the fat and heats it up and basically melts it.”
It sounds too good to be true but Elaine tells me there can be a 24% reduction in fat cells and they will be gone forever (unless you start eating burgers, fries and shakes again).
For some people the results can be seen after the first treatment but the true results will be evident after 12 weeks as once the fat has been melted the lymphatic system takes over to flush it out of the body.
So, 15 mins of fat melting went quickly and felt like a bit like a hot water bottle – spikes of heat travelling around my abdomen and totally comfortable. The practitioner remains in the room and always controls the level of intensity so it can be adjusted at any time.
The next stage is truFlex, a 15-minute session of muscle stimulation that will tone and firm the muscle that lives under the fat that has been melted away.
“Once we’ve melted the fat, we want to see that muscle,” says Elaine.
The treatment is equivalent to 54,000 crunches and my abs and obliques absolutely felt like they’d done that many crunches in the days following the treatment.
The feeling during the treatment is hard to explain – it tickles at times,
it’s like a contraction sensation and depending on your level of tolerance you can increase the strength.
This treatment can be used for rehab after surgery, such as knee surgery and help with back pain by improving your core strength. It is said to increase your muscle mass by 30% but it’s not for people that want a quick fix and don’t live a healthy life.
It’s ideally for those that work out and eat well but have stubborn areas of fat that refuse to move.
I have been on my wellness journey for 12 months and still have a few areas of fat that Pilates just won’t shake so this is ideal for me.
In fact, during the treatments I felt my core strength had increased making my Pilates sessions stronger.
After the first 30-minute session which included truSculpt and truFlex I felt flat, tight and strong in the abdomen and obliques.
The second session I was able to increase the intensity as I wanted to challenge myself to achieve that after the surprising results I could see and feel from the first session.
The remaining sessions were three-
to-four days apart and at the conclusion I felt my core strength had increased dramatically, I can feel and see my abs and I feel strong, tight and flat.
I only recommend this treatment for those that are committed to maintaining a healthy balanced diet and exercise regularly – that’s where you’ll see and feel the long-term results.
Maintenance sessions are advised every two months once you complete your first full treatment plan.
Now that I have toned and terrific abs I’m going back for a thigh treatment then arms. I am now a truBody fanatic.
Note: before and after photos will be shared on Hello Sunshine Magazine’s social media as at the time of print we hadn’t reached the 12 week mark where final results are revealed.
READER OFFER!

SECRET Sauce
Although surviving for centuries without science, question or intervention, native ingredients are only starting to be appreciated for the natural richness they can bring. Deb Caruso discovers how Ochre Sun honours its past while serving the future.
Ochre Sun founder Alana Kennedy is a force to behold. This proud Waanyi Kalkatungu woman from North Queensland is developing a skincare range that not only services the user, but builds stronger communities and connections to land in the process.
Through Ochre Sun, Alana not only challenges the chemically enhanced range of sunscreens on offer but honours the past and presents a future for First Nations women in crisis.
Her unique model taps into the ancient knowledge and wisdom of her Ancestor’s Spirits, Apicals and Elders to share ancient rhythms and preordained practices that focus on whole of health, physically, spiritually, psychologically and emotionally.
Using native botanicals as the key ingredients in her products, Alana chooses to engage First Nations’ women, many of whom are escaping domestic violence, to provide a brighter future.
Alana says allowing women to connect with country and respectfully harvest the botanicals used in the Ochre Sun products provides them with meaningful employment and a brighter future.
“Further to this, we are working on a circular program to build sustainable housing for women escaping domestic violence and in the process, allowing them to build a new career through meaningful employment,” she said.
“The Ochre Sun vision has providence and significance in Aboriginal Culture and the multi-tasking sunscreen revolutionises skin protection with native botanicals, extracting a rich history of holistic defences against our climate’s harsh conditions.
“This is the greatest redemption story about how we endow purposefully to care
for ourselves and honour our country. Our model allows your brand investment to positively change lives.
“We are providing a platform for women to step into the circle of acceptance and powerfully share their story as it is, and the gift is the botanicals they have to offer the world.
“Our hope is to encourage other women to come together in a spirit of unity and share in the healing power of sacred remedies under grace.”
At the core of Ochre Sun’s values are ‘Ingredients, Permission, and Providence’, which Alana says hold great importance “along with Respect, Resilience, and Tenacity”.
“For centuries, women from matriarchal lines have been nurturing the land and its vital components to bring forth the pure power of botanicals, which we are now offering as a precious gift to the world,” Alana said.
“These botanicals were crafted exclusively by the Creator for your benefit, offering complete body restoration through the purest of natural elements.
Our hope is to encourage other women to come together in a spirit of unity and share in the healing power of sacred remedies under grace.Ochre Sun founder Alana Kennedy PHOTO: Megan Gill
“Across time, Aboriginal Women have united to impart spiritual ingenuity and deliver the world’s most enduring and exceptional selection of skincare and personal care products, which are tailored exclusively for women, by women.
“These products are carefully crafted with a deep understanding of the specific healing properties of each botanical ingredient, ensuring they serve their intended purpose for the body.
“We are intentionally driving integrity and cocollaboration of stewardship to produce global recognition in using Cultural botanicals to create a range of products using traditional Aboriginal processing methods and bush medicine knowledge.
“When used by consumers they clothe themselves with Country.”
The Ochre Sun supply chain is committed to preserving the authenticity of the plant by following the protocols of Aboriginal Culture. Alana said the product formulation boasted the finest and most resilient ingredients sourced directly from Elders on Country.
“The Kakadu Plum is one of our leading ingredients and boasts an impressive capability to shield itself from the relentless and extreme sunlight it endures,” she said. “Through its development of robust antioxidant molecules, it has established a formidable self-defence mechanism that wards off UV radiation.
“As a consequence of this system, the Kakadu Plum has become a rich source of essential nutrients and a botanical superfood.”
This winter skincare essential is a powerhouse of benefits. Supporting collagen, hydration, and firmness, while offering potent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. It effectively repairs barrier function, promoting radiance, luminosity and glow. With its versatile capabilities, it addresses hyperpigmentation, exfoliates, and aids in wound and scarring repair, while regulating sebum production.
Alana said Kakadu Plum was truly a must-have ingredient that tackled a variety of skincare concerns as it was designed to do.
“Kakadu Plum has the highest recorded levels of natural Vitamin C in the world and although your body requires vitamin C year-round, it is especially beneficial during the winter months,” she said. “This essential nutrient helps to combat dull, pale winter skin and supports your skin’s resilience throughout the season.”
The other main ingredient in the botancial blend was ‘Old Man Weed’ or Sneezeweed as it is sometimes referred to.
“It has many benefits for your skin such as hydration, collagen support, protection against damage, exfoliation, and promoting radiance and glow,” she said.
“It can also condition and moisturize your skin with a natural tint and is designed to achieve a healthy, glowing skin.
“This potent and authentic combination is part of preordained rituals to support skin health and quality of life for community.”
PIMPED UP Pets
Everyone thinks they have the best dog and none of them are wrong so it’s no wonder we are kitting out our canines with the finest things in life – they are our very best friends. Carlie Wacker chats with the brains behind Indie Boho designer dog beds and accessories that are taking over the nation.
Sora Caldwell has created a pempire (pet empire) based on the human connection we have with our fur kids.
Indie Boho Pets is in the big business of pimping our pet’s lifestyles with cleverly designed accessories that are as functional as they are fabulous.
For Sora, Indie Boho was born out of necessity.
“Before our cavoodle Indie joined our family almost seven years ago, I searched through all the regular pet shops for a bed that would suit our home and would be a nice size and shape for her,” she recalls.
“I couldn’t believe how dull and quite frankly, ugly, all the options were. The beds on offer were clearly mass produced for the US and European markets - tartan patterns or fluffy small donut beds that my cavoodle would overheat in.
“They were not fit for purpose based on our climate, lifestyle or interior style.”
Indie Boho began with Sora lovingly hand sewing a bed for her baby dog. There was a clear need to fill this niche so she set about designing a whole range of designer beds.
Sora has always been a fertile thinker with a background in graphic design, printing and manufacturing - the purrfect foundation for Indie
Boho and the reason she is so successful.
“I love to problem solve, engineer and design not just the aesthetics but also the function and form of a product using my own observations of how my pups love to sleep, train, lounge, travel, bath and eat,” she said.
“This has led to my bed inserts being recognised by IP Australia as an original design, protected for its uniqueness. We were also the first to bring out our type of dog travel mats that support mat training and good behaviour at cafés, bars and restaurants.”
The Indie Boho institution is every pet owner’s dream come true offering water resistant and washable pet beds to complement home décor; car booster seats to improve safety and reduce anxiety; travel mats for training; and comfort-plus blankets, couch covers, towels, wash bags, bandanas and new ceramic bowls that are dishwasher safe.
Functionality meets fashion when it comes to Indie Boho and the prints and designs are a nod to Australian style and local talent.
“The first artist I worked with was Fleur Harris who is known for her work with Adairs. It was exciting and I have
worked with a dozen more since.”
The Indie Boho brand was first stocked by our much-loved Peregian Beach pet boutique Peticular and has now grown to offer more than one hundred items that are stocked all over the country at pet stores, groomers, vets, doggie daycares, gift shops and even at Myer.
Sora tells me most of their sales are direct via the website which they love as they get to interact with customers (and their fur kids).
They also offer collection from their warehouse at Warana by appointment.
“I love our customers,” says Sora.
“I also love inventing original
products, the R and D involved, the years of testing and sampling but the feeling of satisfaction once the products are in the hands of our customers and the glowing feedback starts rolling in.
“I know our products are making a difference for pet parents, both in styling their homes and cars but moreover in their practical benefits.
“Our car booster seats are receiving rave reviews as there is truly nothing else that compares. Customers have been calling them ‘game-changers’ as they are no longer forced to stay at home with their anxious dogs on weekends.
“Their whole family can go out on adventures and have found a new lease on life! I truly believe I have found my calling. Who wouldn’t when you get excited customers sending in photos of their super cute fur kids, with our products, on a daily basis!”
My 12 year old canine kid Harry the Swiss Shepherd recommends the Noosa Nights Pet Travel Mat for comfort on the run and brother Brax the Border Collie wishes to recommend the Byron Surf XXL bed for extra room to roll over and do the back sleeping with legs in the air.
I know our products are making a difference for pet parents, both in styling their homes and safety in cars
SHE’S GOT THATVibe
For 25 years Shaz was flying high in the money market and stock market in Sydney until the ocean (and maybe a lover) called her for a sea change and she found herself in Port Macquarie.
Love was in the air, as was her work in an aviation admin and maintenance gig.
It seems poetic to me that Shaz has always been drawn to roles that relate to the sky, I feel she is a kindred spirit that looks to the sun to draw in her desires – a believer that if you think it, you can achieve it.
It was the sun that drew her to Coolangatta, then north to Coolum.
Shaz Bates has a vibe – she is an evolving woman who is not afraid to try anything new, a first-time business owner of La Extravaganza and the quirky empress of a colourful world of fashion, spirituality and fun.
Carlie Wacker gets to know this self-described motorcycle riding five-star hippy from Coolum.
“I always wanted to be a Queenslander,” Shaz says.
“When I moved away from the hustle of city life I knew I was never going back and was ready to bathe in the sun. Plus I have an affinity to beach and bush and the Sunshine Coast gives me the best of both worlds.
“Movement and health and fitness are an important part of my life and this is such a great place to be active.”
There is such a fun and authentic energy about Shaz – you never know what you’re going to get and I admire how she has been able to weave that
unmistakable Shaz vibe into her shop.
La Extravaganza is a unique boutique and more.
“La Extravaganza was named before the shop was even born,” Shaz says.
“I wanted a store full of beautiful things and at the time I wasn’t sure what that would look like. But I believed in it and in July 2022 it came to life.”
Shaz took over the boutique on Mooloolaba Esplanade (opposite and just down from the Mooloolaba Surf Club).
It is a cornucopia of fashion, candles, homewares, jewellery and crystals.
Fashion has always been a passion for Shaz but it’s a curation of unique preloved designer fashion and sustainable local labels that fill the racks.
“We are a throw away society so I am anti fast fashion - a large percentage of our store is preloved,” Shaz shares.
“I love fashion and fabrics but they must be good quality and unusual or eclectic. Clothing should be viewed as an investment – well-made, well-cut clothing makes you feel good and will last for years.”
Shaz and I talked a lot about the power of dressing each day – it’s a reflection of your mood and yourself.
You should ‘feel’ the fashion you are wearing; clothing has the ability to increase our confidence and self-esteem.
Along with a treasure chest of nostalgic preloved designer delights, La Extravaganza stocks Australian label Ladli Collections which are made to order and the boutique is the only Sunshine Coast Stockist of Circa Collective from the Gold Coast.
Shaz has also sourced a range of sleek rain and wind weather coats by Danish label, Regn.
This boutique is one you will want to allow extra time to stay and play. The
racks of unique clothing will reveal little surprises and talking points as you scour through them finding hidden gems.
Garments and fabrics will trigger childhood memories; crystals and candles offer an additional sensory gratification; the jewellery, décor and art make beautiful gifts for self and others; and the epic, always changing but familiar, soundtracks in store will have you busting a few moves while you browse.
My advice is to take some time to look around, raid the racks and immerse yourself in a nostalgic fashion moment. You can even do it with your doggo as the store is pet friendly.
La Extravaganza is a unique boutique and more… it is evolving and it’s not afraid to try anything new - just like its founder Shaz Bates.
We should all take a leaf out of Shaz’s beautiful book.
Statement specs and jewels are your best friend for creating chic winter styles that stand out. I have sourced the best in preloved and vintage fashion from the heart of Mooloobaba; winter prints and glam colour from Forest Glen; breathtaking jewels from Buderim; opulent opals from Glenview; stylish finds from Sunshine Plaza; and the most eclectic and showstopping sunglasses and eyewear from Nambour! The winter fashion editorial brings together the best of fashion on the Sunshine Coast and all shot in the stunning new studio of Lauren Biggs in Moffat Beach. Now that’s sharing the love!

OF ART Algorithms
Emerging technologies have forever altered the artistic landscape; an evolution that unfolded imperceptibly slow until it became instantaneous and unstoppable.
The advent of virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), generative AI and digitally owned non-fungible tokens (NFTs) shakes up centuries of trusted artistic traditions.
Communities of artists have tended to keep it at arm’s length, afraid of new media disrupting or replacing their crucial role in our culture.
But to make art is to be human. With authentic creativity at the heart of their mission, Caloundra Regional Gallery is embracing technology as a tool to empower rather than intimidate.
From 18 August until 15 October, the Sunshine Coast Art Prize 2023 marks this shift as artists amongst the 40 finalists integrate new media into their innovative and thought-provoking submissions.
Whether finalists use digital or physical artforms, the essence of the Art Prize remains – diverse portrayals that confront, celebrate, enlighten and engage.
“As always there are lots of paintings, both acrylic and oils, but there were less abstraction works this year with artists leaning towards realism and expressive modes of making,” Caloundra Regional Gallery Director Jo Duke said.
This year’s exhibition reflects our reality with unapologetic yet profound interpretations. While the most pressing issues of today clamour to be heard, the ordinary beauty of our community is just as striking.
From the lingering trauma of COVID-19 in Dagmar Cyrulla’s Life to the warm intensity of suburban summer memories in Sebastian Toast’s Paddle Pool, each work captures experiences alive in both the artist’s life and the collective lives of the Sunshine Coast. The same can be said for artworks
As new technologies shape self-expression, Caloundra Regional Gallery keeps our collective stories, identities and issues at the heart of visual arts, as Georgia Beard discovers.
generated from new media. With a single channel video of a pokies machine, Michelle Hamer’s Wheel of Fortune highlights the lottery of protest language where we win depending on the media we consume.
In the face of habitat and species loss, Donna Davis’s digital print IMplant_008 depicts a human-flora-fungi implant awaiting a mutually beneficial host.
oral history of the Glass House Mountains through a digital landscape.
Glass Lines tells the story of Tibrogargan, who watched the sea levels rapidly rise from the east and alerted his family to the danger. Tears for the loved ones left behind formed the rivers present today.
After Brian commissioned the work, Shauna experimented with a new style of indigenous artmaking to develop the silhouette of the Glass House Mountains.
“The top section of the painting represents the meeting place known for breathtaking sunsets, and the bottom section speaks to the waterways and the footprints from her ancestors running from the rising water, as spoken of in the dreamtime,” Brian says.
AI is rapidly changing digital art across the globe, allowing more people to express ideas and belief than the traditional crafts.
“With this foundation I could overlay the animated visual algorithms, which created a work combining ancient stories with new technology.”
Brian’s visual equations were inspired by divine geometry, the scientific evidence of climate change and the sustainable planetary limits we are approaching as a species.
“My fascination with ancient wisdom and artificial intelligence are all consuming,” he says.
“AI is rapidly changing digital art across the globe, allowing more people to express ideas and belief than the traditional crafts.
“It is a completely different skillset, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t hold value as art.”
Caloundra Regional Gallery’s NAIDOC: For Our Elders also celebrates continual connection to culture and country while confronting us with the reality of environmental damage.
Two exhibitions remember and retell indigenous stories handed down for generations. As Jo Duke explains, the gallery worked with local and national First Nations artists to show their stories from a traditional aesthetic through to contemporary commentary.
“Aunty Hope O’Chin’s Saltwater Dreaming links her People’s story of the first surfer – the Dolphin – to the current – the board surfers of the waves, and how both co-inhabit on the shores of her Country,” she says.
“Ghost Net Sculpture from Pormpuraaw celebrates six artists from the community of Pormpuraaw which lies on the west coast of the Cape York Peninsula.
“Celebrating totems linked to their Creation Stories, the sculptures utilise recycled materials – in particular, fishing nets that have been dumped by commercial fishing boats which causing significant environmental harm.”
In tandem, the Maroochydore Library Artspace will display 20 years of previous NAIDOC posters while showcasing Together We Stand
First Nations creatives from the Regional Arts Services Network (RASN) in Southeast Queensland North (SEQN) developed this interconnected art project to connect and improve their emotional wellbeing during COVID-19’s uncertainty and isolation.
Technological advancement isn’t destructive. With new media in our hands, we have the power to uplift the stories of those who came before and those who forge ahead.

AN ECOSYSTEM of Art
Immersing artists and art lovers alike in creativity, the Sunshine Coast’s premier sculptural festival presented by Arts Connect Inc. urges us to connect with the spaces we inhabit, as Georgia Beard discovers.
Gazing out over the coastline, sculptures grew, scattered and soared across the vast escarpment of Flaxton Gardens during last year’s Sculpture on the Edge.
From environmental installations to pedestal-mounted statuettes, each artwork shared a deep relationship with space it occupied.
Marine creatures drifted in the open air, long-forgotten flora flourished in the gardens and human figures meandered through the winery halls and sprawling lawns, just as alive as their observers.
The 2022 sculptural exhibit at Flaxton Gardens attracted a record-breaking 6,200 visitors!
Curated from 230 entries, 80 local, national and international artists presented 140 final works, all vying for a plethora of prizes donated by the community.
As the Overall Winner for 2022, Nicole Voevodin-Cash’s Pocket Park Series - Mounges invited us to interact with mountain ranges made from polystyrene and synthetic turf, blurring the lines between the natural and the artificial.
Capturing the movement of a bluefaced honeyeater with COR-TEN steel, Highly Commended went to Gabe Parker for Aves #5, a reminder of the dangers of habitat depletion. Denislav Mitkov Delchev received the Emerging Artist award for Shelter from the 21st Century, a miniscule refuge from the barbarity of ecological destruction made from recycled bronze, wire and copper.
Two inaugural prizes for Local Artist and Reclaimed & Recycled Art went to Amanda Wyatt’s Eco Warriors, a travelling
family representing the forced journey of wildlife, and Paula De La Rua Cordoba’s Punto de Fuga, challenging Western society’s historical relationship with nature.
Inextricably connected to their environment, these sculptures urged us to look back on the footprints we leave behind. This year, we’re invited to explore new ecosystems of art for the exhibition’s 13th iteration!
Hosted by Arts Connect Inc. and supported by the Sunshine Coast Council,
Sculpture on the Edge returns to Flaxton Gardens from Thursday 23 November to Sunday 10 December.
No longer an ordinary competition, the exhibition is evolving into an art festival with a deeply immersive and inclusive art experience for all attendees.
Expect a high-calibre showcase of indoor and outdoor sculptural or 3D works, exploring a variety of mediums and a spectrum of scales from tiny to enormous. The 18-day program will feature the sensational Sculpted Dinner, live music, artist talks and masterclasses in painting, clay sculpture, paper lantern sculpture and life sculpture for figures and portraiture.
Artists will have the opportunity to network and expand their professional skills with classes in photographing art and growing art businesses. Monte Lupo Arts and Paintbox will also offer creative workshops for adults, children and people with disabilities.
In the Year of Accessible Tourism, Director Gretchen Keelty said Arts Connect Inc. aimed to make the event accessible for as many art lovers as possible.
“We are planning adaptations for people with visual and hearing impairment, plenty of places to rest, and programming some low sensory afternoons for people who struggle with sensory overload,” she said.
“We will also be setting up pop-up installations to create unexpected art experiences around the Sunshine Coast.”
Sculpture on the Edge joins a kaleidoscope of arts activations in the region, from Horizon Festival to Australian Wearable Art Festival to The Rangebow Festival to Open Studios Sunshine Coast and Noosa Open Studios.
Together, these events are transforming the Sunshine Coast into an epicentre for the arts.
The generous sponsors behind Sculpture on the Edge lay the foundations for this arts community.
Once again, Flaxton Gardens and the De Deyne Family will fund the $10,000 Overall Winner Prize and the $5000 Highly Commended Prize.
As a new sponsor, The Opal Cutter has increased the prize for Reclaimed & Recycled Art to $2000, open to works consisting mostly of recycled, upcycled, reclaimed and recovered materials.
Sculpture on the Edge will also introduce Tina Cooper Glass Gallery’s $1000 Artist’s Choice Peer Award, voted by the finalists!
Available to artists living within the Sunshine Coast Council district, the $2000 Local Artist Prize will be sponsored by Illume Creations, while the $1000 Emerging Artist Prize will be sponsored by Montville Art Gallery and Bodo Muche Studio, open to artists practicing for less than five years.
Provided by Montville Chamber of Commerce and Hammond Optometry, the final People’s Choice Award of $1000 will give voters the chance to win an accommodation package from Lovestone Cottages!
As we immerse ourselves in a growing landscape of art, connection is greatest creation we could leave behind.
Entries are open to all sculptural artists to submit their ideas and creations until Thursday 31 August.
Visit www.sculptureontheedge.com.au to apply with up to three entries!

ART BEAT Monitors
As Gallery Director for Noosa Regional Gallery and Floating Land 2023, Michael Brennan, explores the important role that art in the environment plays in finding understanding and common ground.
Maybe it’s a bit much to get into a philosophical discussion about the meaning and purpose of art in the closing pages of a regionally focussed lifestyle magazine. But then again, why not? Don’t worry – I’ve only got a couple of hundred words (and I’ve already used forty-three (fifty-two), (now fifty-five…))).
Anyway, one of the particularly valuable things I think art and artists can do is take the pulse of a society at a given time and alert us to its ailments.
It’s something that so many celebrated and important artists do – give us access to their lens on the world – allow us to look through their eyes with the colour and shape of their lived experience and see the things that we might not otherwise see.
It’s certainly one of the things that Noosa Regional Gallery sets out to actively make space for, and this year, our flagship art in the environment biennale – Floating Land – has embraced the idea as its central theme.
One of the biennale’s projects takes the unusual and unorthodox space of the exterior wall of a toilet block in the Noosa Woods as its gallery.
Award-winning artist, Todd Fuller, has been invited to present two hand-drawn animations, shown on flatscreen TVs mounted to this coarse concrete public amenity. Fuller’s work often deals with themes of love and loss, steeped in notions of identity, community and place. These two works, in particular, give animated form to early documented accounts of same-sex relationships in Australia’s history.
The tales, however, do not end well, with one work detailing the demise of a bushranger who was arrested while cradling his dying younger male lover, and the other depicting what could be considered the first European trial and recorded gay hate crime – two young Dutch sailors marooned on separate islands off the coast of Western Australia for their relationship with one another.
No spaces are neutral, and all places bring with them a history of association and meaning. This is something that Floating Land exploits, with artists and artworks collaborating with the spaces they temporarily occupy, changing our understanding of each for a moment in time.
Public toilets are no doubt loaded spaces for some queer communities, with
judgment often levelled at one group of people, primarily by those who exist outside of it.
But as Fuller’s successive still frames stream across these TV monitors with rhythmic regularity, we’re offered an opportunity to pause and reflect on the outcomes of our judgements on how others might live their lives.

IN THE Studio
As the Patron of Noosa Open Studios Matt Golinski shares the inspiration behind the celebration of the state’s biggest open studio event.
Think about the pieces of art you have around your home.
Your favourite painting that you bought on a whim that hangs on your wall like it was just made for that spot. Or the ceramic mug you drink from every morning that seems to make the coffee taste better than any other one in the cupboard.
The handmade jewellery that was given to you as a gift that just seems to have something magical about it.
Now imagine you could go to the source of that magic and find out why it feels so special.
Thanks to a small group of dedicated artists who decided back in 2015 that it would be a great idea to make it more than a dream, you can stop imagining.
For 10 days in October, we all have the rare opportunity to visit the private studios of the painters, ceramicists,
jewellers, sculptors, textile artists, even knife makers of the Noosa Shire, see them at work in the environment that brings them their inspiration, learn all about their creative processes and perhaps even make an investment to call your own.
Starting eight years ago with 39 artists over all parts of the region, Noosa Open Studios has now grown into a huge artistic showcase with more than 100 members, making it Queensland’s largest open studios art event.
This year, multimedia textile artist Simone Z Leao heads up a small volunteer committee which coordinates and drives the event.
Born in Brazil and previously a resident of Europe, Africa and Asia, she settled in Australia 15 years ago and moved to Noosa in 2020, where she established her Outer Art Studio nestled in a large native
off-grid property in the Hinterland.
Simone’s earthy creative space nestled amongst Bunya Pines and Eucalypts in Pomona is a great example of what to expect during your travels.
Prototypes of garments at various stages of completion hang on frames around the open room, as she experiments with meticulous stitching techniques to create the type of pieces you would expect to see on the runways of Paris or New York.
You can easily plan an itinerary that fits your artistic interests and time constraints by using the app that has been developed specifically for the event, allowing you to map a course and navigate your way to destinations from Noosa’s Main Beach to the rolling hills of Kin Kin.
This year I have had the honour of being invited to be the patron of Noosa
Open Studios, a role I feel very humbled by just knowing the quality of the vast talent I represent.
Growing up in an artistic family with a father who painted and a mother who wrote poetry, I struggled to find a medium that felt right for me until I discovered cooking, and for the past 30 or so years I have had the privilege of creating my own kind of art using the incredible palette of ingredients that I’m surrounded by in this beautiful region I call home.
Throughout my career I have met hundreds of the people responsible for filling and expanding that palette, and their knowledge and passion has made me the cook I have become today and
given my food far more purpose.
Similarly, Noosa open Studios offers art lovers the chance to see the passion that each artist has for their craft, an experience that makes any piece of work we do buy so much more meaningful.
On the 1st of September I’ve been set the task of coming up with some suitably
artistic canapes for the opening of Art is Served at the Cooroy Butter Factory, the beginning of a two-week exhibition at the venue which will give the public an opportunity to have a ‘taste’ of what each artist has to offer.
Then from the 6th to the 15th of October, the exhibition moves to its spiritual home, Wallace House in Noosaville, to coincide with the trail event itself.
Art means different things to everyone, but with over 100 different styles to immerse yourself in, there’s bound to be something to appeal to everyone.

STYLISH, HAPPYHomes
Happiness is an inside job.
Carlie Wacker meets the team that make it their life’s stylish work to create Hamptonsinspired interiors that will have you living your happiest life.
Humans that are happy at home are happy in life and that is the greatest gift we can give ourselves and the people around us.
The joy of walking into your home and feeling a sense of calm and relaxation is something that drives the team at Style My Home Hamptons-Inspired Interiors.
Caroline May started Style My Home nine years ago when she was renovating and furnishing her home in the northern beaches in Sydney. She found it challenging to source unique furniture, so she imported a container full of her favourite pieces from overseas.
When word got out, the people came knocking and a beautiful business was born which now boasts four stores around Australia in Sydney, Brisbane, Gold Coast and Noosa.
Caroline designs and imports all the furniture and décor; she and her talented team provide in-home styling and will soon launch a staging service.
Style My Home is highly respected for providing Hamptons-Inspired interior design services with long-time Style My Home stylist Sammi McCauley saying that they love making homes a beautiful place and space to enjoy.
“We are all spending more time at home, so our goal is to create a space that people wake up to and never want to leave,” she says.
“Hamptons styling offers that resort feel – a relaxed calming oasis.
“Within the Hamptons aesthetic is modern farmhouse, coastal and classic styles so there are ways to personalise
this to suit the client and the home.”
The in-home styling service is perfect for people who have bought a new house, renovating or just need help finding and defining their own unique style.
“The feedback I hear a lot from my clients is how fun and stress-free the experience is,” says Sammi. “We also have customers regularly asking if we could stage their home to sell so watch this space.
“Our in-home styling packages are suitable for any size home, affordable and redeemable.”
“The most common mistake I witness is when the design elements don’t work cohesively together, or when clients
choose furniture or rugs in the incorrect proportions. These mistakes can be costly and stressful.
“Our number one aim is for our clients to love their space. It’s the reason our designers do what they do.
“Your space should not only look amazing, but it should also reflect your personality and style; and it should function in a way that works with how you want to live your life.”
The team’s latest in-home styling project ‘Atrium House’ at Benowa Waters on the Gold Coast is a stunning example of what Style My Home can do so I ask Sammi how they approach a client brief.
“We like to collaborate with all our clients, take them on an exciting design journey,” she says.
“It’s very important as a designer to listen to the client’s needs. While designing spaces like Atrium House, it was extremely important to understand the home design and style but also research the environment and lifestyle of the homeowners.
“This project screamed ‘Modern Resort Hamptons’ so we planned each space carefully, taking full advantage of the scale of the home.
“Our furniture and homewares were made for this project, elevating the space to create the modern Hamptons oasis we were aiming for.
“The install went seamlessly. It’s a beautiful home, full of warmth, with lots of light and the scale of it made it a grand experience.
“The beautiful details within the interior took our styling to the next level. It’s a home you visit and never want to leave.”
Happy client, happy stylist - I would say that is mission accomplished.
DISCOVER YOUR STYLE
Here are Sammi’s tips to help you discover your own personal style:
1. Create a pinterest board - this will help you get inspired, there are so many wonderful ideas to tap into
2. Design magazines - rip pages out and create a vision board, get creative with it
3. Instagram - exploring is key
4. Design trips - head out shopping and see what excites you
5. Create a moodboard - this will help you keep on track with your vision.

PLANTS FOR health
Indoor plants are loving their rise in popularity – they are taking over our homes one room at a time and the upward trend is doing wonders for our health. Carlie Wacker explores the benefits of bringing the outdoors in.
Australians love a houseplant. Our obsession has seen a growth in businesses dedicated to the indoor garden and the health benefits are just as beautiful as the fresh aesthetic they create in our personal spaces.
My collection began for interior styling purposes – green was the new black a while back and the house started to fill with Ficus and Ferns. It was much later that I learnt that my green children were doing wonders for my wellness and the indoor garden curation became much more strategic.
Your indoor plants can help purify the air, boost your mood and lower stress levels. If you are anything like me, they also become your friends and one-sided conversations are shared whilst tending to their needs.
To best look after your house plants and your health I asked some of the Sunshine Coast experts in indoor gardening Simon Van Roy from Manawee Garden Centre to share his thoughts.
Simon says the two main benefits of plants are improvement of air quality and wellbeing.
“In an average four-by-five metre room, one plant can make your air 25 per cent cleaner and five plants make the air up to 75 per cent cleaner,” he said. “The magic number for optimum purification and wellbeing benefits is 10 plants in an average four-by-five metre room.”
So what are the best plants to create an inside space abundant with life.
SIMON’S TOP FIVE
1. Pothos (Scindapsus Species) – this is ideal for the new plant parent – it is low maintenance, always green and a climbing vine so it looks fabulous on your desk or kitchen bench.
2. Peace Lily (Spathiphyllum) – this midsize glamour plant is the best addition to your bedroom as it aids in a good nights’ sleep as it absorbs airborne mould spores that are common allergens.
3. Cascade Palm (Chamaedora Atrovirens) – a statement in any space this pretty palm is a natural humidifier and boosts oxygen levels.
4. Ribbon Plant (Chlorophytum) known as a Spider Plant and one of the best to reduce anxiety and clean the air.
5. Rubber Plant (Ficus Elastica) showpiece in the corner of any room and great for those that suffer from allergies as it produces no pollen. And if applied
to a skin rash, the leaves are known to have natural anti-inflammatory properties.
With these important plant tips and suggestions deeply rooted into your memory you can now go about creating a healthier, more productive home and office.
Plants are well known to increase productivity – not just because you are busier maintaining all the living things in your house.
So, get growing indoors and may your live a life of wellness in greener and cleaner air.

THE ESSENTIAL GUIDE
ROOTS OF COMMUNITY
Peregian Beach is a community rooted in connection –from the Kabi Kabi people who moved freely about the wallum to the generations of today calling these sand dunes home.
THE COMMUNITY BANDED TOGETHER TO CREATE THE FIRST KINDERGARTEN, THE LOCAL BUSHFIRE BRIGADE AND THE BOWLS CLUB...
which later gave way to the Peregian Beach Community House. Also seeking to protect their natural paradise from urban development, volunteers regenerated dunes and wetlands, which soon became part of Noosa National Park.
When the road from the Sunshine Coast to Noosa was nothing but a dirt track, this idyllic village was established almost on accident. In 1960, developers laid roads along the easiest routes, divided the land on either side into lots and sold the first home with sweeping waterfront views on Pelican Street. Soon after, tennis courts, a sports oval and a caravan park sprung up across the low-lying hills. Where the village square now grows, a community pool opened in 1964 and attracted scores of locals and visitors. As the story goes, a few larrikins once left a shark in the water for swimmers to find!
As more families moved in, chasing a lifestyle like a leisure trip, they embraced Peregian Beach’s small-town spirit. The community banded together to create the first kindergarten, the local bushfire brigade and the bowls club,

to bring the best of the best of what’s on offer in the area to everyone who visits essence,” Tony said. The cream of local arts and design brought essence to life. Talented Sunshine Coast creative businesses collaborated with the resort, developing a signature scent and stylish team uniforms, and commissioning the original artworks found throughout essence.
The property also features a gym, special events and conferencing space, perfect for a chic coastal wedding for up to 80 and a boardroom/private dining room for 16 that hosts stylish executive retreats. educated decisions. How are you responding to the changing landscape of the real estate industry? I believe we are ahead of the changes. We are a younger boutique-size operation with the resources, reach and exposure of a much bigger brand. We utilise technology to ensure that our clients and customers are provided with the highest level of service which invariably leads to higher sales prices. What sets you apart from other real estate agencies on the Sunshine Coast? We are highly progressive, we harness the power of modern technology, and the combination of energy and experience we possess means we can provide our clients an outstanding customer service experience.
What was life like growing up on the Sunshine Coast? It was a beautiful environment to grow up in, especially as a kid who loved surfing and the outdoors. What attracted you to a career in the real estate industry? After landing my first job in real estate at 15, I was highly attracted to the ability to set up a business and lifestyle that was financially rewarding, located in my hometown and did not have an age barrier which is common in many other industries. What philosophy drives your business model?
Honesty, Integrity and Innovation. How would you describe your relationship with clients? We are often complimented by our clients on our ability to communicate effectively, and I enjoy providing them with as much information as possible so they can make the most

A beacon of light for patients and families alike, Heyday Medical, situated in the MiVitality Wellness Hub, brings plant medicines to the forefront as a promising treatment for Australian patients. An early adopter of medical cannabis, Heyday’s founder Dr Jim Connell has worked with the plant for over five years. As a GP, he discovered its potential after searching for treatment options to help patients suffering from complex diseases. Dr Jim witnessed first-hand the medical potential of plant medicine treatments when his mother Helen was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2020. His expertise in the field allowed his family to access a cannabis-centred treatment plan, giving Helen valuable respite and quality of life alongside her intensive chemotherapy treatment. It was from these struggles that Heyday Medical was founded.
