or the second time, Montevideo will be Capital Iberoamericana de la Cultura 2013, mention awarded by the Uni贸n de Ciudades Capitales Iberoamericanas (Union of Ibero-American Capital Cities, UCCI in Spanish). In 1996, this port city had been awarded with this mention, making it the destination for tourists coming from all around the world to South America to discover its charms. The Union of Ibero-American Capital Cities gives this award to every city in the world actively participating in the organisation processes of the Latin American cities for the culture, as well as in the networks and committees. This is how Montevideo joins the list of awarded cities. With a literacy rate above 90%, Montevideo keeps its Latin roots, as it opens itself to modernity and progress. Its streets, museums, monuments and other leisure spaces form a metropolis worth visiting.
Route around museums and art spaces The Uruguayan capital distinguishes itself for its beautiful architecture, and on many of its buildings it remains the best of its R铆o de la Plata culture. Municipal Museum of Fine Arts Juan Manuel Blanes. Created in 1930, it bears the name of the painter who created the foundational iconography of the nation on the centenary of his birth. Sala Zitarrosa. Inaugurated in 1999, it offers high-level music spectacles and, sometimes, dance and audiovisuals. It has a capacity of 531: 391 at the stalls and 140 at the gallery.

Muralla Abierta. Cultural complex uniting the Museo de las Migraciones (Migrations Museum) and the Museo de la Ciudad (City Museum). It contains the most important archaeological remains of the fortifications of the colonial Montevideo on a big square with a roof. City Archives. A space for the community which turns into a meeting and promotion place for any kind of activity. The Pre-Columbian and Indigenous Art Museum, MAPI in Spanish (MAPI). It has temporary exhibitions of its patrimony and other collections, public and private, many times as a result of investigations about subjects of the local historic and cultural

Open-door celebration All along 2013, Montevideo will have more than 50 big cultural activities to celebrate. They start 19th January, with the Desfile de Carnavales iberoamericanos (Latin American Carnivals Parade) all along rambla de Carrasco. Uruguay: small great tourist power In relation with the designation of Montevideo as Capital Iberoamericana de la Cultura (Latin American Capital of Culture), Liliam Kechichián, Uruguayan Minister of Tourism, makes an evaluation of the State tourist policies and the private sector intervention. “The formula is not magic”, she says, “we need to work.” Adriana Morán Sarmiento

ith a consolidated team work, enthusiasm, development and maturity, the Uruguayan Ministry of Tourism, ruled by the teacher Liliam Kechichián, has built solid basis for the tourist development in a country with around three million habitants.
Courtesy: Ministry of Tourism and Sports of Uruguay “We need to point out that last year the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) chose us as a unique case where, in the middle of the financial crisis of 2008 and 2009, we did not only keep the number of tourists, but we had increased the amount of money coming in from the tourist sector. Because of its relevance, the
interview | UNWTO called it ‘case study: Uruguay’”, the Minister told us in an exclusive interview with innova magazine. The “case study: Uruguay” is a subject in the best universities in the world, as an example of what can be done in tourism when on a crisis era. Today, the second smallest country in South America sets itself up as a big power with beaches, cruises, congress tourism and a lot more to offer to the international tourist.
Better politics, more benefits Being such a small country, the external context has an important influence on the economy, especially on the tourist sector, as the two-times winner of the “Mujer del Año en Turismo” prize (“woman of the Year in Tourism”, 2006 y 2011, Liliam Kechichián, explains. - How did the idea “more benefits for the tourists” arrive? - For next summer season we have various challenges, as everyone knows. On this sector every conjunction has an influence, but also do our long-term policies and the permanent dialogue between the State and the private sector. At this moment we are facing various problems, with a reduction of our aerial connectivity while the changes of this sector are being processed since the closure of Pluna; the Argentinean restrictive measures towards general tourism, and the persistence of a big uncertainty on the developed countries, especially in Europe. It is on this context where we have designed our policies to stimulate the tourism with new benefits: the tax reduction when paying
LILIAM KECHICHIÁN’S COUNTRY - Which part of the country should a foreign visitor never miss? - It is very difficult to make a choice. I would recommend visiting our whole country. Uruguay has tourist destinations for everyone, no matter your liking: from sun and beach to thermal tourism, and also rural tourism. - Any gastronomic recommendation? - The ‘asado’ (roasted meat) at Parrillada Don Koto and the ‘matambre’ (meat dish which name means ‘hunger killer’) with milk at any ‘boliche’ (bowling) in Montevideo; and for dessert? pancakes with ‘dulce de leche’. - Which one is your favourite destination in Uruguay? - There are many beautiful places in Uruguay, my favourite: Valizas, at the Rocha department.
in nova URUGUAY NATURAL Uruguay is situated on the Southern cone of America, between Brazil and Argentina. It has its coasts on the South-East, on the Atlantic Ocean, and on the South, towards Rio de la Plata. It has the second biggest colony of sea lions in the world, at the Lobos Island (the translation would be ‘Wolves Island’, as in Spanish their called ‘sea wolves’). Uruguay has 10 international airports, with Carrasco International Airport as the most [important? big? part missing], at Canelones, on the metropolitan area of Montevideo. However, we have to keep in mind that thousands of Argentinean families have their rest residences in Uruguay, and that Argentinean tourist destinations have registered an explosion of prices. Besides, other traditional destinations for the Argentinean traveller, such as Brazil or the Caribbean, are also too limited or are not very competitive, so we also expect a huge amount of Argentinean brothers and sisters this summer. - There is an integration between public and private sectors, how do both sectors benefit from these policies? - Tourism, as any economical activity, develops and grows on the basis of stable policies which we can very well State policies; based on consensus and common efforts from the public and the private sectors, and the creativity and convincement of both sectors. Our tourism has not arrived to more than 3 million visitors only for a natural and spontaneous effect of a regional economical boom. What we do and we do not, both at the State and at the
private sector, has a lot of importance and is a fundamental factor, explaining the good results obtained. The sustained growth of tourism in the last decade is due to a efficient and attentive crew, and to the fact that this boat has a solid keel.
The public sector has set on its side macro-economical stability, clear and enduring play rules, a reasonable and predictable tax policy, an institutional stability praised worldwide. it has also put creativity, work, fiscal resources (as it happens now for this season); it has attended the private sector’s demands; it has promoted the country on the most diverse markets; it has stimulated social tourism, because intern tourism is also a revitalizing of the sector and of the economy in general. On its behalf, the private sector has made big invests on tourist infrastructure, has professionalized and sophisticate its offer, has developed a gastronomy and a hotel industry of a better quality; has trained and professionalized its employees. It is a dynamic sector that has known how to adapt to times, has been creative and has proved the advantages of a long-term work, which are noticed on hardest times than these ones. - In global crisis era, how does Uruguay face receptive tourism? - As I have pointed out: the formula isn’t magic. It needs a lot of work focused on a long term on the side of the State and of the private sector. A lot of dialogue, a lot of creativity, and the notion that we are not working to get profits one summer, but to keep developing a
interview | sector which is one of the main ones for our economy. - Which one is the kind of tourism most people look for in Uruguay? - Business tourism has grown a lot, with the centre in Montevideo, and the cruise tourism. The arrival of 244 cruises is foreseen for this season: 126 to Montevideo and 118 to Punta del Este. In summer, beaches are the main attraction, but the rest of the year the thermal coast has a growing demand, as does Colonia de Sacramento. Besides, the interest for rural tourism is increasing, as well as the one related with bird watching and the nautical tourism. Uruguay already has full conscience of the fact that it has to become a tourist destination the whole year, and we will achieve this diversifying the offer.
Every administration in the country has developed its own proposal. Besides, this has resulted in an increase of the intern tourism, which has the support of the Minister of Tourism and other State organisms, with the stimulation of the social tourism, with plans for the older people and for the teenagers taking their first trip to the beach. - Which are the main challenges that Uruguay has to face in international tourism? - The main challenge is to keep the long-term policies and to think on the foundations of this sector. Tourism is one of the ways in which Uruguay is changing its productive matrix. From a farming and agricultural country we are now on a country which, apart from keep the traditional sectors growing, grows thanks to the industry and the agricultural industry, through forestation, logistics, informatics and communication.

The area was built in the 1950s; then it was not the Centre of contemporary art that we find today, but a State-owned industrial zone in which highlighted electronics factory. In the year 2002 cultural and artistic organizations began to rent, divide and convert the old factory and industrial spaces turning them into galleries, art centers, studios, design companies, bars and restaurants. Then named to the 798 zone since these numbers symbolize the cultural movement headed by Chinese avantgarde art.
The path of Nanluoguxiang is typical of the era in which was built, the Yuan dynasty (12711368), with a central artery that goes from North to South (the current busiest area) and eight hutongs extending to each side. Although until recently the central artery it concentrates all businesses and activity, increasingly more stores and other establishments are opening in the adjacent hutongs, so the area is growing progressively, without losing the unique character to which made this area one of the most famous districts of the city.

1-SALAMANCA: CHIC PARADISE
In the area of Plaza Mayor (the Main Square), the establishments are all along the streets, in neighbourhoods like Salamanca and Chueca shopping gets mixed with gastronomy; while the most traditional markets catch the curious’ eye.
Many of the most emblematic streets to go shopping in Madrid are on Salamanca neighbourhood. Serrano, Goya, Velázquez, Claudio Coello, Ortega y Gasset and Príncipe de Vergara have the most luxurious boutiques of the city and offer the tourist a unique variety of fashion and enjoyment.

The most famous shop of buttons in Europe, created in 1897. (Calle Claudio Coello, No. 23) Álvarez Gómez. Even though it was created in 1899, it was the cologne created in 1912 the one making the brand famous. We maintain and use the original formula today. (Calle Serrano, No. 14) Two commercial centres, very distinguished, join the shopping route: El Jardín de Serrano and ABC Serrano, with name-brand shops in clothes and accessories. Besides, the neighbourhood has a high number of important jewellery shops, with Nicol’s, Vasari, Aristocrazy, Pomellato, Oh my God, All Swiss Madrid, Perodri Joyeros, Rabat standing out.
in nova Cultural route: Palacio de Cibeles (Cybele’s Palace). Known as the Centre, the Palacio de Cibeles offers us a spectacular view from its roof: the buildings of the Círculo de Bellas Artes and of the Instituto Cervantes, the Puerta de Alcalá, the Palacio de Buenavista, the Palacio de Linares, among other touristic sites of Madrid. Majestic and impressive, it was built between 1904 and 1918. Today it is the neuralgic centre of the city, and the scene of countless historic and social events. It offers free guided tours every first Wednesday of the month. Palacio de Amboage (Palace of Amboage). It is one of the biggest mansions in Madrid. It covers the whole block between the streets of Lagasca, Padilla, Velázquez and Juan Bravo. It was built between 1914 and 1917 and is now a icon of the neighbourhood. It is where the Italian embassy is now.
2-PLAZA MAYOR: MADRILENIAN TRADITION Around Plaza Mayor, Puerta del Sol and Gran Vía there is the most traditional shopping area in Madrid. It is sufficient with walking some metres to
find infinite possibilities: fashion, crafts, music, accessories, books, gastronomy. Small shops with a rooted tradition with their doors open to everybody. Some representative establishments are: Casa de Diego: It specialises in fans, umbrellas and Manila shawls since 1823. La Favorita: Devoted to the sale of all kind of hats since 1894. To know more about the Madrilenian culture: Art golden triangle, where one of the most important museums in the world is situated, on Paseo del Prado, street which gives it its name to the Prado Museum. We can also find the Thyssen Bornemisza Museum and the Reina Sofía Museum. On this tour we can visit shops as Objetos de Arte Toledano and ArteStilo, where we can buy anything from a small souvenir to important pieces of craftmanship and porcelain. They work from 23:30 to 6 in the morning. To move in taxi is more expensive and slower, due to the traffic. There are many options to rent a car, but it can be difficult to find where to park.

At the beginning it was a street market which supplied the Justicia neighbourhood, an area of Madrid which had grown a lot during the XIXth century, when it gave shelter to the emigrants coming from the countryside.

Israel Moreno Fernández, manager of the store, tells us that the clients come from a great range of origins, despite the economic problems worldwide: “The demand has considerably changed, due to the current economic crisis. The local and American clients have backed out, while Russians and Chinese currently represent the majority of our clients.”

In a refurbished basement from the XVIII century, under a four-floors building, there is the most attractive Zocotienda, offering medieval products like swords, armors and shields. They also have Asian objects, very fashionable these days, like katanas and others. The founder of Zocotiendas, V. Moreno, dedicated his entire life to the arts and crafts and swords. With all the experience he had, the man decided to have a place where he could offer to the public the best of the European traditions, choosing swords as the main attraction.

Art in Toledo Arte Toledano, founded in 1965 by Ciriaco Sánchez Garrido, is located in an artistic triangle, among big museums and the best hotels of Madrid. he story begins in India. P. Audiyapatham is a professional clothing weaver in Sri Sakathi Vinayagar, he began working with clothes when he was 25 years old, his father taught him. He would like Manmohan Singh, India´s Prime Minister, to see the lungis he makes. Lungis are traditional pieces of clothing worn around the waist in humid and hot places where wearing trousers is uncomfortable.

Nowadays, it has 14 permanent weavers and 236 weaving looms with 1688 meters of tissue weaved for IOU, creating 425 pieces of cotton. These workers in India create what Marisa Sangurabo and her team of professional craftsmen receive in Maniffature Di Padova. They receive a high quality raw material that will become magnificent pieces of clothing.

where working with textiles is a tradition. Marisa and her team have provided a great deal of collaboration in making IOU Project come true, they have even modified their production processes to cope with the artisanal requirements of IOU. IOWEYOU´s high quality of confection and final touch have been possible thanks to the meticulous work of the local team. Each piece is unique, that is why IOWEYOU allows final costumers to track the production process, from the first hands that touched the tissue until the last details of the piece. The story of how the product was made, of the people involved in production and of other clients that had bought it, it can all be seen through a social network called ecommerce that The IOU Project launched as a site where people with the same ideas about authenticity, transparency, originality, social and environmental responsibility can meet. Each IOWEYOU piece comes with a QR code that can be used to access the story of any piece.

Kavita gets to be advertised through conversations. Her first company starts to run in a moment when everybody else wanted to leave. The serious business comes in 2008. She decides to inaugurate a shop, but everything changes… The loyalty to her clients makes her confirm her artisanal roots. She refuses to use any other way of production and soon realizes that social networks are changing the whole world. Everybody can share opinions and know what is happening in every corner. So she decides to take advantage of that and create her own international social network. Thanks to those moments that turn lives upsidedown, when an inner “something” calls the need for starting a project, today we can enjoy the work of a designer that illuminates the interesting world of fashion. As Kavita Parmar says: “when everything went to hell, I at least fought…”
in nova THE WOMAN BEHIND THE SCENE Kavita Parmar, the author of all this, is a creative, groundbreaking and optimistic woman. She is a breathtaking woman even before being introduced, she gets everybody´s attentions. She is a designer with well-defined political views that tracks the roots of her profession. When fashion seems to have forgotten about the art of handcraft, she bets on an artisanal work done by clothing weavers and designers with wonderful raw materials brought from India. The 21st century is a time for Italian designs and espadrilles. She goes for quality and originality instead of working “lowcost”. Costumers, using technology, get in touch with craftsmen involved in the production, and that is how the product gets an undeniable emotional burden. Kavita Parmar was born in India, near Nepal´s border. She has lived in London, Hong Kong, New York City, San Francisco and New Delhi. She still remembers her childhood when her mother used to choose different tissues and let her play with old clothing. It certainly helped the creativity developing of this nomadic and fresh designer.

unique mixes between environment and art. She is now working on her next recycling collection. It will be first presented in the Art Basel (Miami Beach, December 2012) and then she will have her own show in New York. Her tendency is strongly influenced by welfare and she ends up creating fashion shows full of magic, colors and light pieces for renovated women. It is the case of her collection named Nina, inspired in a song by Nina Simone, called I put a spell on you. Lisu has her own interpretation of this song, she created the image of a woman in a metamorphosis of feelings, someone who destroys and rebuilds herself. “Nina are sequencing images showing that woman in the middle of a visceral process, going from chaos to a new spring”, Lisu said. - Can you describe the creative process you go through when you design? - Dreams, art, music, my family and experiences are all part of my creative process. The new feature is always the recycled materials I use. I sew collages of cloth

and that gets to be the base of a piece of clothing or a new unique accessory. I believe in connections, in enjoying every moment until the last minute. Raising awareness about recycling is my new lifestyle. - Is the world turning into an ecologic place? -I do think so. Nowadays, there are more designers using pro-environment materials or recycling elements to create new pieces of clothing. I am pro-recycling, but sometimes clients have the wrong perception towards recycling and underestimate our work. That is why I produce pieces with recycled material, always taking care of the last touch. - The collection you felt the happiest about? -All my collections left me good memories, mainly because I think I am out of clichés. I don’t care about canons. I do exactly what pleases me and every collection represents my opinion about a specific moment. When you finish a literature masterpiece or a painting or even a fashion collection, you know it is yours because it came out of the inspiration based on something unique.

gift that became an icon of style. That is what happened when Bernadette Chirac, France´s First Lady, invited Lady Diana in 1995 to the Cèzanne Exposition. Bernadette Chirac gave Lady Diana a Christian Dior limited edition handbag (named chouchou until that moment). From that point on, the handbag is called “Lady Dior”. It’s a tribute to the antique Napoleonic chairs “cannage” where the most exclusive clients of the French mansion used to sit to watch the fashion shows. This piece not only preserves its fans, but it has also adapted to the market requirements, and nowadays it is almost a collection object. In 2011, “Lady Dior”, was refreshed by John Galliano, with different material and styles. Today, it is possible to find more than 70 versions of the original. The “Oyster Perpetueal”, by Rolex, has being adapting in time in order to preserve the steadiness of this brand. The “Oyster Perpetueal” was the first water and dustproof watch, made in 1926 and also known as the “bubbleback”. It got its name from its hermetic properties, because cofounder Wilsdorf compared it to opening oysters in a romantic dinner. Later on, this watch was also pioneer in having an automatic system showing the date, in other versions like the Oyster Perpetual Datejust. At that time, it was impossible to imagine gentlemen with watches in their wrist, they had them in their pockets. But the situation changed; today, it is difficult to think of a person with a Rolex Oyster Perpetual in his pocket.

ast 26th November the third edition of the Bienal Iberoamericana de Diseño (Latin American design biennial, BID in Spanish), organised by the Central de Diseño (Design centre) and DIMAD, started. In its short life, the BID plays the role of another one of the bridges bringing America and Europe together, outside the political summits. By the way, the conclusion of the last one, which took place in Cadiz, was that Spain had a lot to learn from its American cousins about
how to get out of the serious economic, banking and social problems that are battering us. Actually, just a couple of years ago, the Campana brothers joked about this subject on an interview with REM Magazine: they were not surprised by the economic phenomenon, as the Latin Americans’ advantage is to have got over different crisis on different decades. Thus, relations between European and Latin American design have today a renewed perspective, as well as common characteristics. On both sides of the Atlantic the concern about the sustainability is expressed on efficient objects, on their production or on their maintenance. Actually, the BID12-Cosentino Prize supports these purposes. The same happens with the need of reinforcing the design as a discipline for the inclusion of everyone in a society without barriers. Different options, such as conferences, workshops, talks and exhibitions can be visited until next 28th February at the Central de Diseño at Matadero Madrid.

Fogo Island Fogo, Canadá / Saunders Architecture We have to celebrate an outstanding idea that the Shorefast Institution had: to develop the Island of Fofo, in Terranova´s northeast, into a special place for local artists.

Art is the selected theme to get attention to the island and turn it into a creative place through the construction of some houses that the Norwegian Saunders Architecture carried out. The architects thought in 3 different types of residences that are premade during winter in the workshops of the island and placed anywhere in the territory. Three houses located in different places of the community were also refurbished. These houses, with spectacular and sometimes scary views of the ocean, are geometrically design to contrast with the surroundings. They are places to observe nature throughout all seasons; that is why they have skylights everywhere. It is possible to observe the sea from each one of the houses, and they are all in places where the artists can get the feeling of absolute freedom. And, because they are not located in urban areas, the places generate their own electricity and have recycling waste disposal.
Three types of constructions, inspired in the local environment, create bonds with the surrounding nature: The long studio is an observatory. The tower is a vertical icon in a mainly horizontal landscape; it has three floors with four different fronts. And the bridge, it is a small place of 20 m2, allowing a plunge in the landscape. »The artist gets to fuse with the imperious nature. This project was initiated in 2010, unfortunately we haven’t heard of the opinion of international artists yet. We will put all our senses, as in a good wine tasting, so our work becomes a referent for the travelling reader, where he/she could find somewhere to share his/her passion for wine. We will make a tour through the wines of the world (American, European...), with a sharp selection of recommended products, we will analyse the keys of the tasting and the secrets of the production; and we will share the most important events taking place on the world of wine.

The event was attended by 120 people including Tiegang Lin, Secretary of the State Administration of Currency in the province of Tianjin, Guan Tao, Director of Balance of Payments of the State Administration of Foreign Exchange, Dechang Kong, Deputy Director of the Economic Office Tianjin, Tan Xiangdong, Board Director of HNA Group, Zhang Ling, President and CEO of HNA Tourism, representatives of several companies or collaborating HNA members and over 50 media agencies. During the ceremony, received Transforex Lin’s hand Tiegang certification authorizing it to act as chain throughout China on currency exchange material. Thus, it becomes the first and, so far, only financial institution in China to acquire such a license, a fact that formally marks the transition of business scope from local to national Transforex.
