SET SAIL for Mexico!

Buying a yacht is easier than ever.

H

ave you heard that sailing sets you free? If you are passionate about yachts and exploring the seven seas, then you should know what I am talking about. But, if you haven’t tried to let yourself flow with the wind and find tranquility and joy in the comfort of your floating house, then you should stop what you are doing and start planning your next sea adventure.

16

opulence

Perhaps the best part of buying a vessel in Mexico are the exciting port cities throughout the country that will guarantee you memorable excursions as relaxing or lively as you wish. You can either wander the Pacific coast that offers dramatic landscapes and abundant marine life, or sail through the Caribbean Sea and enjoy a perfect blend of culture, pristine waters and white sand beaches. Buying a luxury yacht in Mexico is probably one of the best ideas since you will have the whole Mexican coast -with its hundreds of gorgeous islands and anchorages- to get used to your new boat and sample the delights of feeling the breeze in your hair and the spray of the sea on your skin while enjoying the most magnificent scenery ever. In addition, the bureaucracy is made easy by the Mexican government, there is no sales tax, and there is no need to panic getting your boat out of the country, since Mexico gives you a 10-year Temporary Import Permit. The whole process will take you less than an hour and will give you a lifetime experience.

CAPSULE COLLECTION

BY KRIS GOYRI Mayakoba Resort in the Riviera Maya inspires renowned Mexican designer.

N

ature and architecture were the muses that inspired Kris Goyri, who found himself surrounded by magical locations filled with colorful fauna and breathtaking landscapes.

Since he was a child, he has been driven by art and color, which are still influencing his charming designs. When he started working in the fashion industry, his sophistication allowed him to conquer Mexican hearts; today he has captivated the whole world with his pure, exquisite, fresh, and feminine style, and this collection is a clear example of just that.

designers

The Capsule Collection is created for women who like to be surrounded by nature, who love to feel comfortable, but at the same time elegant. Goyri imagined a woman being reborn into paradise, and the Mayakoba Resort worked for him as a sanctuary for creation, a space of tranquility that let him reflect on the essence of the resort, its mystical birds, its flora, and the majestic architecture of its four luxury hotels.

As a result, ten natural and elegant dresses arose to highlight the virtues of the destination, its pristine waters, its mangroves, and the marvelous Caribbean Sea. Without question, this balanced collection will become one of the favorites among women who love nature, color, luxury, and details.

That is how La Troupe was born, a fusion of Mexican textile art, with its amazing fabrics and embroidery with fashion and design.

For them, the important things are originality and great fabrics, embroidery and high quality materials, that’s why they develop a limited number of each garment. The details that come with each of the pieces is what makes them unique and magical.

La Troupe is for unique, free, fresh, irreverent and intuitive women; the one that includes, that surprises and sums up to her world, the one who cares for the planet, who loves, in a nutshell: a conscious woman.

SIAR

MEXICO The International Haute Horology Salon in Mexico (Salón Internacional Alta Relojería) is a space for first-class brands, a luxurious and sophisticated staging.

T

his luxury event, which is a program of cultural activities, hosts a private environment for visitors who are buyers of watches or for those with the possibility of becoming one.

SIAR is an event that has changed the way of seeing, understanding, presenting and consuming watchmaking in Mexico and Latin America, which debuted in 2006 with 38 brands. The main idea arose out of the need to have space for Switzerland to put Mexico on the map. And it worked perfectly, because with the presentation of this new addition, the Ambassador of Switzerland in Mexico, Louis-Jose Touron, said that “Mexico is the most important country in Latin America, for Haute Horology.”

32

designers

In recent years, the majority of the watch industry’s general managers have paraded through the SIAR’s exhibition spaces, the most consolidated creators have been seen here, such as Giulio Papi, FrançoisPaul Journe, Stephen Forsey, Carole Forestier, Vincent Calabrese, Daniel Roth, Jean-François Mojon, Andreas Strehler, Felix Baumgartner. Ninety brands have been publicly presented, of which some of them were released for the first time in Latin America, which over the years, is seeing more and more companies taking advantage to present their world premieres at the SIAR.

Every year, it presents us with something new. In 2017, it was: the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève exhibition, which showcases the prized watches that are being presented as the best watches of the year and that travel the world, so that the biggest connoisseurs can appreciate them. SIAR is the most exclusive event in Mexico to which it is only possible to attend with an invitation. On this occasion, CEOs, world and regional managers, creative directors, and master watchmakers will meet again, who will come to Mexico, to enjoy the enthusiasm of one of the most knowledgeable audiences in the world.

AQUA TERRA

Each timepiece has an added edge of style and a refreshing new look.

A

wide selection of new Aqua Terra models has been produced for 2017. Updated both inside and out, OMEGA has transformed the design to give each timepiece an added edge of style and a refreshing new look. OMEGA’s Seamaster Aqua Terra has always provided the perfect balance between sophistication and ocean spirit. In this new collection, some of

the most popular features have been enhanced or subtly transformed. The most notable changes include the teak pattern on the dial, which now runs horizontally, as opposed to vertically, as well as the cleaner aesthetics and the symmetrical case. Certified as Master Chronometers, the collection also takes the Aqua Terra to new heights of precision and performance.

designers

In 2013 with the introduction of the OMEGA Seamaster Aqua Terra >15’000 Gauss, it helped to forever change the way that the watchmaking industry approached the challenges of magnetic fields; it was another milestone moment in OMEGA’s long history antimagnetic breakthroughs. Today, the Seamaster Aqua Terra continues its journey. Just as it was originally designed to do, the timepiece remains a trusted companion on land yet robust enough for weekends on the water.

BICYCLE FEVER

design & deco

Bamboocycles, a very Mexican company looking after our environment.

I

t is not a secret that bicycles are increasing their popularity everywhere you look around. It is just matter of walking around the main streets of Mexico City, and other big cities, to realize that this is the case. And of course, they are eco-friendly, they keep you fit, and they are fun! Luxury IN Mexico contacted Diego Cardenas, director and founder of Bamboocycles, to find out more about his project.

38

design & deco How was the idea of making bamboo bikes born? It was born on a trip and lots of research. In the summer of 2007, I took a design course of traditional Japanese handcrafts, with bamboo, in France. Traveling in Europe, I visited several cities and saw many people riding bikes. I thought it was a great idea to offer as a transport solution. When I came back, I kept the idea of cycling from the university to my house and at the same time, I was participating in a bicycle design research through time (trends). During the investigation, 1890 bamboo bikes appeared. By the winter of 2007, I started to make my first bamboo bike. To date, we have manufactured more than 1,200, and currently, we have eight different models.

Why Bamboo? Replacing the metal of the bicycle frame with bamboo significantly reduces energy consumption and CO2 emissions; bamboo crops generate 30% more oxygen than trees, which makes them efficient air purifiers. It is a renewable and biodegradable resource that can be harvested sustainably as it grows quickly and naturally without the need for much maintenance. In addition, it is able to completely regenerate without the need to replant it. It doesn’t require pesticides or other chemicals because it has its own antibacterial agent and grows so easily that it can even tolerate drought and flood conditions. Because of its rapid growth and root

structure, bamboo prevents soil erosion and, in a very short time, helps the recovery of land destroyed by overgrazing, rebuilding and cleaning the soil of toxins.

What is your goal? Our goal is to create light, sturdy, and environmentally friendly bikes, but our main concern is design. We are not content with using unconventional materials; we seek to take a step further by proposing an innovative design. Due to the nature of the materials we use, handwork is indispensable; hence all our objects convey a sense of artistic individuality. We take great care of the details and pay close attention to finishes: we guarantee exceptional quality in everything we do. Reduce your ecological footprint and be part of the change: Choose bamboo!

real ESTATE

Real Estate with comfort, luxury and exclusivity. Nowadays it is very easy to obtain an infinite number of results in the Internet when typing “luxury home sales”. However, that does not ensure that the results are suitable for the desired search. A savvy buyer or investor interested in acquiring luxury real estate in Cancun or the Riviera Maya can now get professional real estate advice from local experts. A variety of firms now exist offering strategic information to help clients make the best possible decisions to meet their life and financial goals. Top local companies such as ExperThree Prime Properties, make the investment process easier by personally attending to your needs and expectations in one of the most important luxury tourist destinations worldwide.

42

Knowing where and how to invest is not an easy task, so ExperThree Prime Properties will share some of their best tips for buying real estate in one top local market: Cancun Over recent decades, Cancun has become the most famous destination in Mexico for tourists from all over the world. It has spectacular beaches, abundant nature, fun adventure activities and ecotourism, as well as prestigious high-level hotel chains, renowned gourmet franchises, exclusive luxury brand boutiques, and world-famous nightclubs. And year after year it hosts multiple world-class events. From a time in the 1980’s and 90’s when the presence of luxury brands in the Mexican Caribbean

real ESTATE

was limited to one or two shopping plazas in Cancun, we have now seen exponential growth in the industry. In the years since, luxury car dealerships, hotels, clothing and jewelry stores, and even elite sports all grew by leaps and bounds in the area. During the last ten years, new demand, creativity, and the dedication of companies focused on attracting and retaining the national and international luxury market, have all combined to create an ever-expanding selection of high-end shops and attractions. During 2018, the city will gain two more major attractions: the Nickelodeon Hotel and Park, and the Parque Maya that will offer cultural tourism. Cancun has also become a center for national and international corporate offices, business incubators, technology, accredited specialized clinics, hospitals and medical rehabilitation centers, and schools and universities with high academic standards. Not to mention exclusive low-rise and high-rise real estate developments. There is a cosmopolitan, informal atmosphere, with an elegant vibe. This means Cancun is a highly attractive market for buyers of commercial and residential properties, and this is reflected in the real estate growth of the city. One of the strongest investments

has been in closed residential developments (gated communities) built on the oceanfront, in rural, ecological urban environments where there are lakes, golf courses, marinas and shopping centers Another option is residential developments and luxury condominiums located in safe areas of the city that offer residents beautiful views and a wide array of amenities. Both types of real estate developments boast excellent locations and services, offering a friendly, safe and exceptional quality of life. To choose the best investment either individually, with your partner, family or friends, here are some recommendations for buying a luxury property: • Condominium lot: Excellent for companies that want to invest and expand businesses. • Single-family house: The best option for entrepreneurs with a stable life, families with children, and those who seek privacy. • Condominium/ Apartment: Ideal for mature couples without children, businessmen, and people who live alone or travel a lot. • Loft: Perfect for young or mature couples with no children, young entrepreneurs or businessmen. • Penthouse: Excellent for successful professionals, senior executives or ample families. THE FAMOUS ELIXIR “FROM HEAVEN”

gastronomy

There’s a saying in Mexico: For everything bad that may happen, drink mezcal, and for everything good‌ do the same.

M

ezcal is gaining more and more popularity as a traditional Mexican drink, and has begun to take the place of our famous tequila. This is not only thanks to its delicious flavor based on agave, nor for its relaxing properties, but also for its possible health benefits. We now know that, when enjoyed in moderation, this traditional liquor can keep you in excellent shape.

For example, recent studies show that drinking one glass a day helps to balance cholesterol and maintain healthy circulatory function, thanks to mezcal’s ability to dissolve fats. It can also prevent cardiac arrest because it improves heart function.

It strengthens the bones, fighting osteoporosis as it helps in the absorption of vital calcium for the maintenance of bone health. In case these were not enough reasons to drink mezcal, one of its

Six bottles you should definitely try.

the cultivation of excellent wine. It’s also gratifying to mention the great amount of passion and commitment that many wineries share when creating each of their wines. So here are some of (what I consider) the best Mexican wines to try before the year ends:

Orlandi Rosado

gastronomy

Casa Grande Cabernet Sauvignon 2013

Don Luis Cetto Selección Reservada Viognier

Elegant, sophisticated and of good structure. Great wine.

A very tasty wine that emphasizes its citrus character.

Chasselas de Mogor Badan

Interesting wine of great aromatic and gustatory persistence.

Its great herbal and citric character make it a nice companion on hot days.

Orlandi Rosado

Cosecha Tardía Casa Madero

100% Cabernet Sauvignon wine is presented with fresh, slightly fruity with good acidity in the mouth.

Sweet wine, meaty on the palate, wrapping, it is ideal to accompany with dessert.

There are over 150 Mexican wines, of these listed are those which I consider being the very best ones, because of their good relation to quality and to price. I hope you enjoy these six that I’ve shared here with you. Remember, that all that is made in Mexico, is made with the heart. Drink Mexican wine. Cheers!

CASA MADERO, THE OLDEST WINERY IN THE AMERICAS The perfect place that will seduce wine lovers.

I

f you want to taste the best wine in Mexico, and one of the best in the world, come and visit Coahuila and live a whole new experience of walking through the vineyards and getting to know the famous Casa Madero winery, where their expert winemakers create the magic of their internationally awarded wines.

50

A place rich with history, dating back to 1568, when the Spanish conquerors left Zacatecas, to what is now Coahuila, in search of gold, but instead they found this privileged oasis with fresh water springs and a great profusion of wild vines, in the middle of the desert.

gastronomy

This special place is now known as the Valley of Parras, the home of Casa Madero, the first winery of the Americas. When visiting, we recommend that you stay in Casa Grande at Hacienda San Lorenzo. Don’t miss taking a ride on their horse-drawn carriage for trips on the hacienda grounds and enjoy the natural and colonial beauty of its surroundings; with fountains, gardens, and corners that have been aesthetically redesigned to provide an atmosphere of natural harmony. If you consider yourself a wine lover, visiting Casa Madero and the Valley of Parras is a must. Enjoy, drink and repeat!

AN ODE TO MOTHER EARTH

EARTH: Sustainable gastronomy, was the theme of this year in which MillesimeGNP offered a tribute to Mother Earth under the premise of raw product. Leader in the field of haute cuisine and design, MillesimeGNP returns to build its ephemeral spaces in order to recreate restaurants, workshops, lounges and much more. From Europe and South America six chefs specialized in the vegetable, marine and carnivorous world were present: Claus Henriksen (Castle of Dragsholm), favorite disciple of René

52

Redzepi, Iván Domínguez, Oscar Hernando, Eddie Shepherd, José del Castillo, and Stéphane Balluet. In addition, among the Mexican chefs who have managed to make their name an international reference, Christian Bravo, Rodolfo Castellanos, Gerardo Vázquez Lugo and Jonatan Gómez Luna, created recipes from the elements: water, earth, fire and air.

gastronomy

Thus, new faces and young talents that are driving the gastronomy engines, gathered for three days in this leading event in haute cuisine combined with design During the event, GNP also presented the distinction Vivir es IncreĂble (Living is Incredible) to six personalities from different artistic disciplines. The Millesime spaces are intended to reinforce the image of each of the collaborating brands, following the same thematic thread that varies with each edition, but always retaining the concepts of elegance, modernity and visualization. Do not miss out and see you next year!

THE MAJESTIC

COPPER CANYON

experience

A geologic wonder more immense than the Grand Canyon.

H

idden in the heart of Sierra Tarahumara, Chihuahua, the natural wonder Barranca del Cobre (copper canyon) has been standing there for millennia protecting the customs and traditions of the Rarรกmuri natives, also known as Tarahumara. The coppery tone of its walls named this group of seven major interlocking canyons (each one deeper than the Grand Canyon in Arizona), which were formed by six rivers that drain the western side of the Sierra Tarahumara. All of them merge into the Rio Fuerte and empty into the Gulf of California.

Besides enjoying the dramatic scenery, there are many places and activities around this natural splendor. Once you are there, you can reach sites like the Cascada Basaseachi, Piedra Volada, as well as villages, missions and Tarahumara communities. Camping and bird watching is also possible, or simply admire the contrasting vegetation and the ever-changing tones and shapes of the highlands, which appear to melt into the horizon. If you are one of those who enjoy a fun day of zip lines, cable cars, wonderful colored light shows on the cliff faces, the Creel/Divisadero area along the railway line is for you.

56

Live

the experience

Uncover the dramatic scenery of the Sierra Madre Mountains aboard the world-famous Chihuahua - PacĂfico train, better known as El Chepe. It is the only passenger train in Mexico and one of the greatest attractions in the country, since it crosses cliffs, crosses 86 tunnels, passes over 37 bridges over flowing rivers to reach its destination, an wonderful and first class adventure. Fly to Chihuahua International Airport, since the train leaves everyday at 6:00 am you need to stay over at least one night in the city. We suggest the Sheraton Chihuahua Soberano near downtown. They also offer a private transfer from and to the airport.

WHERE TO STAY

If you have the time, we strongly recommend you to stay at the stunning beautiful rambling mansion Copper Canyon Lodge, which offers 14 different guest rooms all of them equipped with antique beds and luxury clawfoot bathtubs. It is not easy to get there; it is located in Batopilas, considered one of Mexico’s Magic Villages, and the trip totally worth it. If you need to stay closer to the Copper Canyon, then the Hotel Mansion Tarahumara will be the best option.

A JEWEL IN OUR JUNGLE

JOYÀ, Cirque du Soleil’s show inspired by Mexico’s history and culture.

N

o matter what age we are, we can all enjoy JOYÀ. For a few hours, we return to the dream, the illusion, and the laughter that children enjoy every day. In Riviera Maya we are fortunate to be able to enjoy the best of the circus whenever we want, ever since Cirque du Soleil opened its only exclusive and permanent show in Mexico in November 2014 at the Hotel Vidanta Riviera Maya. The show is also the company’s first to offer a simultaneous gourmet dinner. The architect Arturo Hernández designed the set, inspired by the flora and jungles of the surrounding Caribbean paradise. The theater, which is Cirque du Soleil’s smallest, has the shape of a rising palm and was built using sustainable materials, preserving the local ecosystem.

Beginning with the lobby, with its huge Aztec calendar, the audience enters a truly Mexican environment. The VIP lounge has a modern section where one can comfortably wait for the show to begin. The rooms are full of bright and striking colors that prepare attendees for the magical moment: living JOYÀ. Inside, the theater evokes an enormous library, inspired by the one at the UNAM (the Mexican Autonomous University). Here on this stage, the main characters live a great adventure. Mexico’s culture runs through the show’s theme. Our pre-Hispanic culture is present in the monarch butterflies that allude to the transmission of the secrets of life from one generation to another, ensuring our traditions’ survival. Classic cultural components are intermingled with Cirque du Soleil’s very particular way of storytelling, full of mysticism. Together these two traditions create an unforgettable experience.
