LYDIA LAVÍN PAYS
HOMAGE TO THE WORLD’S NOMADS Lavín’s latest collection, “Nómada,” seeks to honor the history of Mexico, a country which has always welcomed people from different regions, ethnicities, and beliefs.
L
ydia Lavín, a Mexican designer who works with indigenous communities and artisans from different states of the country, celebrated the 12th anniversary of her label with the Fall-Winter collection Nómada. Around the world currently, migrants face strong prejudice and often many hardships. To show her support, Lydia Lavín based her latest collection on the textiles of the people who have come to Mexico City from other areas of the country, in search for a better life. Nómada was created by migrant artisans, and as an homage to their experience.
“We have all been migrants, nomads, at some point of our lives,” says Lavín. “Beyond physical borders and legality, [something] has pushed us for years to embark on this journey to a new place–in many cases unknown. It is the possibility, the yearning, to develop fully, to achieve happiness.” The collection presents a cosmopolitan, inclusive view of the influence that all people have in Mexico City, regardless of their origin, sexual preference, beliefs, or the color of their skin. Lydia Lavín has appeared in all editions of Mercedes Benz Fashion Week. In addition, she has participated in the International Tourism Fair of Berlin in 2014, as well as in the Fashion Edition of Buenos Aires and Germany’s Next Top Model.

Silhouettes Yakampot is transforming Mexican roots in the trendiest fashion.
T
his trendy Mexican brand explores and studies the country’s traditional techniques of spinning, weaving and dyeing, as well as the history of traditional clothing, and takes them as a starting point to create contemporary pieces that preserve the essence of the region. Francisco Cancino, the creative director behind the scenes, influenced by Mexican colors and textures, decided to create a concept to reinterpret our traditional aesthetic, and reinvent yesterday’s Mexico in today’s garments. The brand is inspired by Mexico and the identity of our artisans. The color
palette includes all the regions of the country and some of the designer’s childhood memories. His goal is to design clothes that people can feel, see and recognize as Mexican. On the brand’s 5th anniversary, Cancino revamped the silhouettes and key pieces that have defined his collections’ spirit and style through the years, without losing sight of their greatest characteristics: timeless, artisanal and effortless. In 2014, Yakampot won the contest Who’s On Next Mexico by Vogue and opened their first boutique in Polanco, one of the most sophisticated neighborhoods of Mexico City.

Pai Pai, Culture, Art & Beauty An innovative company producing lipsticks inspired by Mexico’s folklore.
K
aren Rodarte and Andrea Ibargüengoitia have been shaking up the beauty industry since 2013 with their colorful and vibrant lipsticks that capture Mexico’s traditions, culture and art through illustrations found on every tube and package. Pai Pai means “lively people, people who move,” in an indigenous language found in Baja California. Pai Pai’s designs reflect this vivacious philosophy by covering each product with original Mexican motifs from Chihuahas to dragonfruit. Their hope is to inspire a lifestyle where local products are valued.
In a nutshell, the creators want us to carry Mexico in our bags and on our lips, so every time we use their products, we feel proud of our home. Each product is a small work of art, since Rodarte and Ibargüengoitia collaborate with emerging illustrators. Each collection so far has been made by different Mexican artists from all over the country, celebrating the things they love most about their home regions. Some of these iconic designs have included various animals, Mexican candies, and naturally, Frida Kahlo (in the latest collection).
The love for Mexico was well represented by Pai Pai in Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Mexico 2016.

Each piece tells a story, inspired by Villegas’ memories of the emotions she felt at various times and in various places. Mexico, of course, remains a great inspiration.

Every ring, earring, necklace and bracelet is made with the finest materials. Her most popular designs are delicate yet powerful gold rings shaped like insects or flowers, which reveal her love of nature.
Villegas often combines real organic elements such as beetles, porcupine quills, feathers, shells, pebbles, and wood with 18K gold in every color, mixed with precious and semi-precious stones. She feels her work is a playground in which to express herself, rather than a job, and this shines through in her colorful collections. This is why her creations are whimsical and full of adventure
She projects into each piece the feelings and emotions she felt and the memories that survived those experiences

tandem to find the perfect balance between restoring the existing ruins, honoring their history, and adding modern materials and structures.
resortS All materials were locally sourced and traditional Maya techniques were used when possible, such as chukum (a wall finish made by boiling a tree root in water). Also, all floor tiles (23,700) were handmade, 1,100 pounds of limestone were used for the bathtubs and 665 pillows were hand embroidered. The 40 casitas and suites feature private pools and indoor/outdoor showers, and each is either built around an old existing wall or a great tree, as a way to stay connected to the environment. Not a single tree was cut down during the construction.
The cenote is located at the heart of the resort. Cenotes, or limestone sinkholes that hold natural pools of pure, fresh water, are held sacred by the Maya. Chablé has created the world’s first spa fully built within and alongside a cenote. Each treatment room provides a direct view to the cenote and feels like it’s part of the surrounding forest. Thanks to all of these carefully crafted features, the 5-star spa resort spread across 750 acres in the Maya jungle of the Yucatan Peninsula has just won the “Prix Versailles 2017 Award,” for the world’s best hotel architecture and design. Promoted by UNESCO and the International Union of Architects, the Prix Versailles is now known as the World Architecture Award for stores, hotels and restaurants. The organization recognizes the most remarkable structures, judging both their interior and exterior architecture.

INVESTOR’S Paradise
real ESTATE
The ABC to invest in a Mexican paradise
R
eal estate transactions in Mexico have become an attractive business for foreigners. But, at the moment they decide to purchase a property, they typically come up with many questions related to mortgages, domestic and foreign banks, and the immigration issue, among others. Gerardo Gonzรกlez, partner at MEXLAW, a firm based in Mexico and owned and operated by Canadian and American lawyers, said that the Mexican financial system does not distinguish between the nationalities of those who want to invest, other than noting whether the person is a Mexican citizen (by birth or naturalization) or a foreign national. The coasts of Mexico have a lot of value and the Foreign Investment Law (published in 1993 with many amendments throughout the years) gives
46
stakeholders who are not Mexican citizens trust options, so that they can buy in restricted areas such as those close to land borders and beaches. This tool allows the foreign national to legally buy property in Mexico through a bank; the bank acquires the property rights on behalf of the foreign citizen; and he then has a contract with the bank through which he has total control of what happens to the property. The bank charges an initial fee for this service and then an annual fee to maintain the property in the trust. There is another way for foreigners to purchase real estate for foreigners, through the creation of a Mexican company, which acquires the rights to the property. Determining the most appropriate purchasing method depends on the business or the type of investment. A third option, getting a direct mortgage
real ESTATE
to buy a property in the Mexican financial system, is somewhat difficult because foreigners cannot get a loan on a tourist visa. But once such a loan has been paid, the beneficiary would automatically be the foreign citizen Trust Advantages Depending on the trust type and the clauses, foreigners can get certain advantages when they invest in this way. Here are some advantages that usually apply to all or most trust agreements: • Managed assets are indefeasible. • Accounting and independent audits are included. • Tax benefits. • Can be used to perform unlimited purposes, as far as they are lawful.
What are restricted areas? Many foreigners receive the wrong information and think they can not invest because of the so-called “restricted areas” (formerly called “forbidden zones”). This is the strip of land which is 60 miles across land borders or 30 miles from the beaches. Foreigners can buy property in this area, but may only do so through a bank trust. To obtain prior permission from the Mexican government, it is necessary to go to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs personally, or through a legal representative authorized by an attorney. INTERNATIONALLY Acclaimed Mexican Architects
design & deco
Three influential architects who are making history.
I
t is not easy to make international history in a world as competitive as that of architecture. Modifying the human habitat, including buildings of all kinds, other structures and architectural
urban spaces is serious work. This is why we felt inspired to showcase three architects who have made a name for Mexican design worldwide, through both local and international projects.
Bilbao Spamer’s architecture, focused on sustainability and social inclusion, has caused a stir in international design circles, so strongly that in 2014 she received a UNESCO Global Award for Sustainable Architecture, making her the first Mexican to win the annual prize, now in its 11th year.
Due to her impressive trajectory, she taught at the School of Architecture at Yale University in the spring of 2015. Among her most outstanding and beloved creations are the Botanical Garden in Culiacan, Sinaloa, and the exhibition hall at the Jinhua Architecture Park in China. She is also known for designing a sustainably-built $8000 house that she touts as a possible solution to Mexico’s affordable housing problems.
Her work seeks to discover how architecture can be socially and environmentally responsible, which helps people live better.
“Architecture is not a drawing. Architecture must be able to absorb the culture. “ Tatiana Bilbao Spamer
49
design & deco There is no doubt that good taste and skillful design run in this young architect’s blood: His father is renowned architect Javier Sordo Madaleno Bringas, who has been recognized with countless honors both in Mexico and abroad, and his grandfather is Juan Sordo Madaleno, a pioneer who helped develop Mexican modernist architecture and who founded the firm Sordo Madaleno Arquitectos in 1937.
Among his favorite projects are Luxury Hall, Nobu Polanco, Artz Pedregal and the most ambitious project that the firm has developed so far: Reforma
Today Sordo Madaleno De Haro is the director of architecture of the famed company opened by his grandfather. His passion for contemporary art gives an avant-garde style to his approach, and he is always trying to create something innovative, because for him, architecture is a means of expression and an excuse to generate new experiences.
Colon, which will consist of five towers (three office buildings, a hotel and a residential) that will be built atop a three-floor pedestal of commercial space.

According to Forbes, Rojkind is one of the most influential architects in the contemporary Mexican scene; he has also been named one of the 150 most important creatives in recent years by Wallpaper magazine. During his career, he founded Rojkind Arquitectos in 2002, which was named by Architectural Record as one of the best ten firms for avant-garde architecture. He is also part of the product design firm AGENT, together with Alberto Villareal, which has won several Red Dot Design Awards. His style breaks with tradition to build a different world; his works
seek functionality including in open spaces so that social interaction and everyday life happen naturally. He hopes to be remembered as someone fun; someone who created his own life doctrine, and all of this is reflected very clearly in his designs. Among his most outstanding work is the reconstruction of the Cineteca National, the R432 Tower, and the Nestlé Chocolate Museum, among many others. He has participated in various large-scale international projects in Mexico, Canada, Kuwait, China, Dubai, Singapore and Spain and has taught at prestigious universities in the United States and Spain.

The History of Formula One in Mexico Since its inauguration more than 40 years ago, the racetrack Hermanos Rodriguez has hosted major championships. Many of us are extremely excited to see the great Formula One race on October 29th, but how did racing in Mexico begin?
A
that Mexico should build a Grand Prix racetrack.
Their father, Pedro Natalio Rodriguez, worked as an advisor to Adolfo Lopez Mateos, who was the president of the country in those days. Spurred by his love for racing, Mr. Rodriguez suggested
His dream was fulfilled, and between the family and the government engineer Gilberto Valenzuela, they designed a world-class racecourse, based on careful study of other courses around the globe. The track opened in 1959, when the Rodriguez brothers were still teenage rising stars in the racing world. In the first competition in Mexico, they took first and third place.
s its name indicates, the history of the racetrack Hermanos Rodriguez is intertwined with that of the brothers Ricardo and Pedro Rodriguez, the best Mexican drivers to compete in Formula 1 in the 1960’s.

sporting events But their story soon took a tragic turn. Ricardo, just out of his teens, had been signed by Ferrari after a series of early successes. Now, in 1962, he was to race at the new autodrome for Mexico’s first (nonchampionship) Formula One race. But, he ended up having to drive an unfamiliar car, and was killed in a crash. The Mexican racing world, plunged into mourning, renamed the track after the Ricardo. Out of this sad moment soon rose Pedro, the older of the two brothers. While he first stepped back from racing, opening a car import business instead, he
eventually came back, participating in Mexico’s first Grand Prix race in 1963, and zooming to first place in Grand Prix races in South Africa in 1967 and Belgium in 1970. Mexico’s Grand Prix then became the traditional end-of-season event during the late 1960s. Pedro triumphed on his home track in 1971, but two years later, lost his life in a race in Germany. Now the track had to be renamed again, this time in both brothers’ honor. But the course, now mired in disorganization, took a long break from hosting world-class races.
Yet the brothers had left their legacy: more than 40 years later they are remembered as some of the best who ever raced. It was not until 1986 that Formula One returned to Mexico City. Jose and Julian Abed modernized and reopened the course, which at its high altitude, favored the turbo cars of that time. Formula One events drew huge crowds who witnessed both thrilling victories and several dramatic crashes which some blamed on the track’s surface. But again, the course moved in and out of use when racing events moved increasingly to Asia. The track lay dormant and even had a stint as a baseball stadium and concert venue. It was remodeled anew in 2001 and 2005 for ChampCar and NASCAR events. Then, in 2015, thanks to a strong injection of private and government investment, Mexican
Formula One returned to the calendar in a completely renovated circuit. The entire track had been resurfaced for the occasion, and the event was a great success for both drivers and fans, an amazing 240,000 of whom packed the autodrome, proving that Mexico continues to have a strong appetite for racing sports and F1.

Top Wines From the Best Regions Mexico has a long history of making wines in our country
M

Fortunately, we have a great diversity of soil and microclimate in states like: Coahuila, Baja California, Queretaro, Aguascalientes, Zacatecas and Nuevo LeĂłn, the later being the most recent. Each region shows very marked differences among the wines produced, for example the

Mexico’s Celebrity Chefs Top chef Gerardo Vázquez Lugo reveals his culinary secrets in this exclusive interview.
A
rchitect-turned-celebrity-chef and restaurateur, Gerardo Vázquez Lugo, owner of Nicos and

Fonda Mayora, chatted to us about his food, his renowned restaurants, and Mexico’s culinary scene.
gastronomy
When did you realize your love for cooking? I was born into gastronomy. My parents had a restaurant, so I grew up there. Before realizing that life was meant for me, I studied Architecture and Industrial Design. Afterwards, I studied Restaurant Management and Gastronomy with Alicia Gironella De’Angeli and her husband Giorgio De’ Angeli, considered two gastronomy icons in Mexico, who were the driving force behind having our traditional Mexican cuisine on the (UNESCO) Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Which cuisine is your favorite?
losing the base. We have taken very good care of our product’s quality and we are always looking for the best traditional cooking methods, without using industrialized products. We use classic techniques, but integrate them with the modern ones adapted for professional kitchens. We pay attention to every little detail; we even offer Mexican sake of extraordinary quality made in Sinaloa, that pairs incredibly well with our mole thanks to its aromatic complexity. Recently, you were invited to be part of Mayakoba´s “Chefs Amigos del Mar” (Chefs Caring for the Sea). Can you tell us what this was all about?
I consider Mexican cuisine as one of the most interesting. I think we haven’t discovered everything. There are many things we haven’t seen that are preserved in small communities, and we haven’t even looked at them. They are subtle, and so elegant in the way they use only seasonal produce, and many specific crops that are only available in those communities.
Rosewood Mayakoba and chefs Karla Enciso and Juan Pablo Loza organized a dinner to raise awareness among chefs, hotels, and restaurants in Mexico. The idea was to preserve marine species, to communicate the importance of respecting fishing’s closed season, to understand responsible fishing better, and at the same time to have the great experience of tasting sustainable products.
What is the secret that got Nicos onto the 50 Best Restaurants in Latin America of The World’s 50 Best’s list?
Nowadays, a cook who doesn’t respect a ban or an ingredient’s season is not a good cook. Customers no longer demand restaurants to have certain species all year round, so we now have the option to offer a different choice.
The challenge was to revamp traditional Mexican food without

Tulum, Chosen as the Venue for the World’s Best Restaurant Noma, by René Redzepi visited Mexico for seven weeks.
T
he prestigious Danish restaurant awarded with two Michelin stars and as the “World’s Best Restaurant” by Restaurant Magazine for four years ina row, chose Tulum as a temporary residence. This concept of Noma pop-up has also passed through London, Tokyo and Sydney. This time, Mexico had the honor, because the chef considers us “one of the richest cuisines on the planet”. In this residence, Rosio Sánchez, former sous chef of Noma and now owner of the taco restaurant Hija de Sánchez in Copenhagen, joined the team. Thus, the result was a creative menu of their acclaimed Nordic cuisine inspired by traditional Mexican flavors.
gastronomy
To elaborate the menu they recruited local chefs and spent months traveling the country looking for the best ingredients.
Redzepi believes that in Mexico it is easy to be inspired, because even insects and worms can be eaten and are available in the markets. The same goes for our delicious and exotic fruits like mamey, yam or fresh cacao.
The restaurant was located outdoors, so the atmosphere was completely relaxed, under the starry sky of Tulum, where diners, sheltered by the jungle and the sea, were able to experience a multi-course tasting menu and a pair of original drinks created by the best of the best.
