Master in Sustainable Peace through Sport

A joint Master’s degree delivered by the University for Peace and the International University of Monaco

A word from HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco

“I am proud that the Principality of Monaco, the cradle of so many sports and humanitarian events, is host to such an innovative Master’s degree” “The transformation of our world is profound. Faced with collapsing role-models and ideologies, social integration problems, increasing social inequality, challenges to food supply and health, climate change and environmental threats, we have a duty to safeguard peace education and foster a culture of peace. As the values of the Olympic movement have taught us, I have always been convinced that sport, which stimulates fraternity, understanding and dialogue, can be at the long-term service of peace. Promoting sport as an essential vehicle for sustainable peace requires more than goodwill and shared beliefs. It requires a thorough understanding of today’s wheels of diplomacy and a skilful grasp of technical and humanitarian issues to design efficient peace projects, to finance them, to implement them and to coordinate project stakeholders. That is exactly the purpose of the new Master’s Degree in Sustainable Peace through Sport. This program will lead to the genesis of a body of trained and competent “Engineers for Peace through Sport” able to make peace through sport a reality. I am proud that the Principality of Monaco, the cradle of so many sports and humanitarian events, is host to such an innovative Master’s degree. I wish the students and executives who enter the program the best of success and congratulate them for their action to improve the world in which we live.” HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco

Why a Master in Sustainable Peace through Sport?

Peace building, peace promotion and peace education are long term and multifaceted endeavors. Building sustainable peace requires specific skills in diplomacy and conflict resolution, but it also implies implementing ambitious educational processes for future generations. Promoting sustainable peace involves teaching, learning and transmitting a set of values that help transcend political, social, racial and religious differences that, today, are often at the origin of conflicts. It is crucial in complex environments to keep a pragmatic approach and act at the heart of vulnerable communities where tensions are latent, peace is fragile and social cohesion is weak. In order to be effective, international organizations, governments, and the world’s decision-makers need to develop innovative strategies and deploy means that are inspiring to tackle social issues whilst adequately meeting the needs of specific local environments.

Sport represents an appropriate response to these requirements as it is a universal language based on a unique set of rules. As such, sport can be used as a catalyst for dialogue, brotherhood and respect and enable fostering peace at two levels: • An inter-state level through “sport diplomacy” and

transborder reconciliation policies

• An intra-state or community level, where sport creates

bridges between people and groups

The Master in Sustainable Peace through Sport (MSPS) has been designed with the contribution of individuals and experts from the worlds of peace, sport and academia. This innovative program will lead to the genesis of a body of “Engineers for Peace through Sport” capable of making peace through sport become a reality.

Joël Bouzou, President-Founder, Peace and Sport, L’ Organisation pour la Paix par le Sport, Monaco “Sport is potentially a key driver in establishing and maintaining sustainable peace across the world, but this potential is not yet fully explored. As President and Founder of Peace and Sport, during my visits to our intervention sites in South America, South-East Asia and Africa, I have been struck by the amount of genuine motivation from players for peace on the one side and actors for sport on the other. However, there is little or no coordination between them. It is our collective responsibility to fully assess this issue, and make sport the focal point of concerted, efficient and adapted policies for peace. One of the answer to this challenge is to create a qualified body of ‘Engineers for Peace through Sport’, giving students and executives not just an academic perspective, but practical skills to enhance their ability to design programs for social cohesion and sustainable peace. Graduates of this program will be capable of being the mainstay of political cooperation and operational coordination that are crucial to make peace through sport a reality. This is the central ambition of this innovative Master degree that Peace and Sport is proud to launch with its partners, UPEACE and IUM.”

The Master in Sustainable Peace through Sport program is a multidisciplinary program which seeks to educate and train an elite group of “Engineers for Peace through Sport,” able to harness the potential of sport as a strategic tool dedicated to building and promoting sustainable peace across the globe. Designed for students and executives, this innovative Master program combines solid academic knowledge and practical skills, such as: • Developing and maintaining operational competencies in designing and implementing peace-building, peacepromotion and peace education programs through sport • Understanding and leveraging diplomacy through sport • Teaching and promoting the values of sport as a tool for social cohesion and peace education • Advising decision makers and political leaders in creating concerted sports policies for sustainable peace

John J. Maresca, Rector, United Nations mandated University for Peace, Costa Rica “At the University for Peace, we are very pleased to be a partner in this exciting new program. We offer a range of graduate level peace-related programs, on international law, human rights, gender equality, the role of the media, environment, development, and responsible management. We are convinced that sport can be a key element in attracting young people to participate in positive ways in their communities, and ultimately to build or reinforce peace. Sport demonstrates that there are rules governing competition, and that rivalries have their limits. Sport competition offers an alternative to negative lifestyles, often leading young people toward education, self-discipline and positive values, and show that peace is possible, even after conflict. But the potential to use sport to lead young people toward education, mutual understanding and peace has only recently been recognized. This subject offers very far-reaching possibilities, if it is approached deliberately, by people who understand the potential. We are delighted to work with the International University of Monaco on an MA program which will encourage and train young people in this discipline and for this objective, and we especially value the leadership of Peace and Sport in this joint venture.”

• Benefiting from solid skills in the field in various environments such as post-conflict areas, areas of extreme poverty and regions suffering from a lack of social cohesion • Intervening in impoverished and vulnerable communities • Designing sport programs to address social issues involving international and national sport governing bodies • Activating international organizations, NGOs, civil society and local players • Creating cooperation between actors and promoting strategic partnerships • Designing, implementing, developing, and monitoring a program until it becomes self-sufficient • Fund-raising to promote initiatives • Empowering human capital and training field-workers and staff

Antonella Patras, Dean, International University of Monaco “The International University of Monaco’s mission has always been to educate and inspire global and responsible managers.

To that end, IUM provides a rich learning environment with an unparalleled diversity of students, faculty and staff originating from 60 different countries and displaying highly diverse educational, cultural, religious and social backgrounds. Belonging to the IUM’s community means being culturally aware and respectful of others’ differences, as well as being open-minded, accountable and conscious of our individual and collective responsibilities towards the global economy, the society and our shared environment. At IUM we not only inspire the global generation, we educate responsible citizens of the world. Following the exemplary dedication of the sovereigns of the Principality of Monaco, the university supports many humanitarian causes. It is also actively encouraging sports activities as an additional means of promoting team spirit, camaraderie and core values like respect, humility, honesty and fair play. It is also a way to fight prejudice and discrimination as it unites people of all origins around a common passion. The idea of promoting peace through sport immediately and naturally appealed to us and we are very proud at IUM to initiate such an innovative and important program with our partners, UPEACE and Peace and Sport.”
