PRE MFIN GRADUATE SUMMER SCHOOL

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The 2010 Pre-MFIN at the International University of Monaco (IUM) is a 51-hour non-credit program completed over three weeks. The Pre-MFIN is designed to allow students of IUM Master’s in finance Program to be fully prepared to successfully undertake the intensive coursework at the graduate level. Given the wide variety of backgrounds, cultures, and fields of study of IUM students it is generally acknowledged that they need to acquire an initial familiarity with the accepted concepts, methodology, and terminology in key financial areas before they begin advanced studies in the area. The Pre-MFIN seeks to provide a basic understanding of key financial principles and the skills necessary for their efficient application. It also introduces the types of subject matter – and their particular challenges – students may encounter in their studies, while improving communication in the cross-cultural context.

COURSE DESCRIPTIONS PMFIN 601: Fundamentals of Accounting – (15 hrs) This course is structured around two modules. The first module is designed to provide students with a solid understanding of the fundamentals of financial accounting. The emphasis is on the accounting principles that guide practitioners in the preparation of financial statements. Comprehension of these financial accounting fundamentals will be enhanced through hands-on exercises, case analyses and analyses of financial reports. The complementary second module will allow students to develop their critical thinking. In light of today’s recurrent corporate financial debacles, students will learn to challenge the information published by reporting entities. The module relies on a selected set of case studies that will provide students with concrete practice and exposure to the challenges that pose financial reporting for investors. This course ideally prepares students for advanced classes focusing on financial statement analysis and corporate finance. PMFIN 602: Fundamentals of Quantitative Methods – (21 hrs) This course introduces students to financial data and returns with emphasis on typical statistical characteristics of these and prepares students with the necessary mathematical and statistical background and Excel skills to begin the MFIN program. We review descriptive statistics – including types of data, numerical summaries of data, graphical presentations of data, relationships

between quantitative variables using correlation and ordinary least squares regression and relationships between qualitative variables by way of contingency tables. We review basic probability, expected value and common probability distributions such as the binomial and normal distributions. We also review basics of introductory calculus, discussing functions, derivatives, integrals and optimization. All examples come from financial applications and we analyze data using the spreadsheet package Excel. Excel skills include: using functions and formulas, creating multiple types of graphs, using Pivot tables, running simulations and using the Data Analysis AddIn. PMFIN 603: Fundamentals of Corporate Finance – (15 hrs) This course lays down the most essential concepts of corporate finance. In addition to introducing the main techniques used in capital budgeting & valuation of investments we explore the role of financial decisions and their impact on firms’ creation of value. We review notions such as time value of money & its applications to asset valuation. We also review financial ratios, Free Cash flow computations and introduce students to Cost of Capital. An emphasis is put on students’ capacity to apply those subjects to real life companies. This course contains core elements needed for advanced modeling and valuations found in the MFIN program.
