Hello and a warm welcome from

Inside Bolsover District magazine Hello and welcome to the December Edition of iBD magazine! Our 5th edition using this format! WOW! Time is just flying by! We have had some amazing feedback about the magazine and its content, but always welcome more. Why not get in touch and let us know what you think about our publication? At the beginning of this month our editor suffered a heart attack, so we have had to pull together as a team and pick up on all the great work he does to keep the magazine flourishing. He is now on the road to recovery, but, he has taken a big step back from his usual duties which is making him a little stir crazy! He wanted me to make a special thanks to Kym for going above and beyond her usual duties and to everyone and anyone involved in the magazine and all the people that have just asked if we need help with anything. It is a times like these when you really appreciate just what an amazing group of team members, friends and family we have around us, thank you ALL so, so much! This months sees a revamp on our old style Business Focus as we thought it would be nice to give back a little extra to our dedicated advertisers. This month we look at Hobsons MOT of Bolsover. There are our usual puzzles for all and our kids colouring page to give you a 5 minute coffee break! Check out this months Editors Choice edit, which has been done by our freelance journalist Kym, she has chosen to tell the story of the Northern Lights and we think it has come out beautiful! Our Postcode payout is in the community section, your chance to win £25! Plus all our other editorials, and much more! Like music? This month sees the second insertion of our competition to win tickets to see bands in Chesterfield or Sheffield. Again, Kym had a chat with original band member of Slade, Dave Hill and she loved it! IT’SSSSSSSSSS CHRISTMASSSSSSSSSSSSS!

Hobsons MOT Centre is a family run, independent car management centre which provides everything you need to keep your car, new or old, in good health. They are dedicated to giving you the very best services at an affordable price, and will provide you with excellent, professional advice. I had the pleasure of meeting up with Chris to find out more about the business.

Call: 01246 8289 89 Hobsons MOT 5 Intake Road, Bolsover Business Park, Bolsover, S44 6BB

Owning a vehicle is a blessing when it comes to getting from A to B. But it can also turn in to a curse when something goes wrong. Hobsons MOT Centre ensure you are free to carry on with your journey, wherever that may be, safely and efficiently. Technology is forever evolving. On the forefront of this evolution lies the car industry, which is one of the first industries to embrace any new advances. To guarantee these advances can continue running safely, equally new technology emerges to repair and maintain. This is where independent mechanics such as Chris come in. It is their knowledge of the current industry along with invaluable techniques and understanding of cars that keep us on the road. Together with the ever-evolving world of technology, nostalgia also plays a big part in vehicle mechanics creating a strong ying and yang between both the old and new. Paul Michaels; the chairman of one of the most prestigious Classic Car collections: Hexagon Classics recently spoke about big names in the industry such as Porsche and Aston Martin rising to the top of the Classic Car favourite lists, and with the hobby now trending, the prices of these old cars are set to rise. But if you are a big car enthusiast and have your very own classic, you want to be sure that you are getting the very best for your money when it comes to maintenance, with the finest service.

1.

Where did your love of vehicle mechanics begin? We are a family run business and it’s what we have always done. I have a passion for cars and I have done since a young age.

Yes, there has been an influx in nostalgia recently therefore classic cars are brought in to be serviced and maintained, we still accommodate for the older types and enjoy doing so. We are also up to date with technology therefore can provide any service on a new model.

2.

6.

3.

7.

How did you evolve this passion in to a business. As a family we decided to turn this passion in to a business, we already had trucks so we then extended this in to cars as a side line, which followed on to the vast amount of services we aim to provide to you efficiently and professionally.

As we are now entering the colder months, what advice would you give for ensuing a car stays on top form over winter? The most valuable piece of advice I can give is to take it to your local garage for a winter check, there the technician will be able to thoroughly check your vehicle to make sure it is ready for the colder months. As an extra precaution at home would be to check all the fluid levels and tyre pressures, but ultimately a professional mechanic will be able to run a complete safety check.

4.

How do you ensure a thorough service of each vehicle, every time? We have excellent staff who are thoroughly trained and know exactly what they are doing. Our job is to ensure you can safely travel and to do this we use check sheets so nothing can be missed and a quality service is provided every time.

Do you provide any side services? Hobson MOT Centre offer a variety; from laser tracking, number plates, diagnostic checking to engine and body steam cleaning & recovery. Please feel free to call or pop in and see us to discuss any services you wish. As well as having a comfortable waiting area for customers, you offer a free, local, collect and return service. what are the perimeters for this service? We feel the collect and return service offers something extra to customers, especially in circumstances where the customer is unable to travel to us when their car has an issue. This service we provide locally to Chesterfield, again, please contact us to discuss your needs and we will always aim to provide help.

8.

What does ‘community’ mean to you? Quite a lot, I’m not local to Bolsover but I am a local man. Our customers are fantastic and we enjoy what we do. We wouldn’t be here today without them and will continue to serve the community in the best way we can.

5.

Do your services accommodate for both the newer & older model cars? Such as classic and the new hybrid vehicles. 27

Merry Christmas Everybody! Slade, including original members Dave Hill and Don Powell, are back on tour and performing at The Foundry, Sheffield on the 8th December. Not only remembered for their infamous Christmas number 1 ‘Merry Christmas Everybody’, Slade stormed the music industry during the 70s and soon became one of the most successful acts of the era. Hits such as ‘Cuz I Luv You’ and ‘Take Me Back ‘Ome’ are still remembered to this day and play a huge part in the current trend of nostalgia. I had the privilege of speaking to Dave about the history of Slade which has added to the excitement of seeing them perform. So, if you fancy a night of fun, reliving memories or to just let your hair down, then book your tickets now via The Foundry Box office and join in the celebration that is Slade. There is an amazing chance to win 2 FREE tickets to the show, simply send your answer to the question on the next page and your name including your details to insidebolsover@outlook.com (1) Slade was, and still is, a huge name in the music industry and throughout households, but what was it like rising to stardom? I grew up in a council house in the 50s and 60s and I have very fond memories of my childhood. We all rose to success but before this we were playing in many pubs and clubs as The N’Betweens; Sheffield was one city we played in before we signed. When we formed in 1966 we knew there was something magical there, eventually it led to an off-chance show in London where we were spotted, anyway, we ended up on Top of The Pops which was, really, the start of the journey. I was still living at home at this time, and it even reached the point where my dad became popular himself! Signing autographs which was unreal and fantastic. I remember Toya Wilcox told a story about me in a store in Birmingham when the Christmas song was number one, she said ‘You don’t know Dave, but I was following you around that store, I was an absolute fan’ I mean how crazy is that? No one knows what it’s like until you live it, no one is prepared for fame, it just came knocking on our door and we answered. (2) You have accumulated a staggering 11 Top 5 hits. How did it feel when ‘Coz I Luv You’ hit number 1? It was like we weren’t real. It only became real when we went on Top of The Pops as that was the place to be at that time. My sister knew the song would do well, she told me ‘Dave, that song makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up’. It was the impact on all of us as well, the whole of that week was crazy, once you hit that top spot you become a hot commodity. We felt like nothing could touch us, it was a great time to be alive for the band.

(3) Your outfits were very interesting, one of my favourites being the blue metallic number you wore at The Auditorium in Chicago 1974, is it true you were the mastermind behind them? Yes, who else could be the mastermind behind them? I always say going on stage is an experience. The story of me not telling anyone what I was going to wear is true, I didn’t want to stand the stick from the band. The hair took the longest time; I would put hairspray all over it then throw glitter over the top and I loved it. One day I walked out and Noddy couldn’t believe what I was wearing, our manager was being a comic, telling us all we had another number one and I replied ‘You write ‘em and I’ll sell ‘em’! I remember when I wore what I thought was an Egyptian type outfit on Top of The Pops with the headpiece and someone had misconstrued it for a black shiny nun’s costume! (4) What are your thoughts on the current Pop-Rock music genre? I enjoyed Oasis back in the 90’s and there are a few I still bands I listen to. There are some that enter the music scene and stay because of their originality, but the present genre isn’t rock and roll as my era knew it to be, but music was made differently back then, I call it the human element in us all, music is an expression of individuality. There is so much disposability in the music of today, within 12 months they can become history which is awful. There are the odd exceptions who arrive in to the industry and stay for a long time due to their individuality and originality. I often drift back in the 60’s when I listen to music as its nostalgic to me, but anyone who plays music has a talent. (5) Do you have any projects in place for the future? I have a book that has just been released called ‘Well Here It Is’ which is an autobiography and gives some good stories of the band, so I’ll be getting the book out there through events and signings, then something musical will hopefully work alongside it next year.

Mal has had an extensive career, he featured with Rockin Horse in the 70s, heavy rock band Golden Night, German rock band Hazzard, and he was a founder member of London fun-pub band Paddy Goes To Holyhead. Having formed The Wandering Crutchless with Tino Troy of Preying Mantis, Bruce Bisland of Sweet and occasional guest Andy Scott, Mal joined Sweet in which he eventually became lead vocalist. To be in with a chance of winning a pair of tickets to see SLADE simply answer this question: “What is Dave Hills new book called?” Send answer to: insidebolsover@outlook.com with full name, address & contact details.

2 Tone legends The Selecter are teaming up with The Beat in 2017 to give fans a rare treat, hitting the road together for a number of shows around the world. Life-long friends, they are two of the main bands to come out of 2 Tone – a crucial musical and cultural movement which is still as relevant today as it was over 30 years ago. Renowned for their energetic live shows, longevity has not diminished either band’s ability to put in a performance and get everyone in a room, or field, dancing. Don’t miss arguably two of the best live bands around playing full sets of their many hits, and more each night. The Selecter is led by their iconic frontwoman Pauline Black, alongside an incredible talented band of musicians, and co-fronted by original member Arthur ‘Gaps’ Hendrickson. The anarchic passion that fuelled Selecter gigs during the 2 Tone era is still there, except the pair (Pauline & Gaps) are more driven than ever. The Beat fronted by Ranking Roger released their spectacular fourth album Bounce (the first in over 30 years) in September 2016. The album shows off every gleaming aspect of one of the most musically diverse bands to come out of the multiracial, multicultural explosion that remade British pop from 1979 onwards. Joining Roger in the revitalised band is his son Ranking Junior AKA Matthew Murphy a powerhouse MC who brings to the band an update on the toasting that made Ranking Roger such a pivotal part of the original Beat. To be in with a chance of winning a pair of tickets to see THE SELECTOR & THE BEAT simply answer this question: “Who co-fronts with frontwoman Pauline Black?” Send answer to: insidebolsover@outlook.com with full name, address & contact details.

THREE SHIRES According to research by Dr Kathrin Rehfeld, of the German Centre for Neurodegenerative Diseases, dancing and learning new routines can reverse ageing in the brain better than other routine exercise and also helps to fight dementia. The study of a group of volunteers with an average age of 68, took place over 18 months and involved some of them doing endurance and fitness training (Nordic walking or cycling for example) and others a variety of dance routines such as jazz and line dancing. Both increased the area of the brain which declines with age, but dance played a key role in memory and learning as well as keeping balance. So, although the study didn’t actually mention Morris dancing, the sort of dancing that Three Shires do certainly fits in nicely!

We have had some enjoyable days out this year, dancing with other teams at Bolsover Castle, Sheffield and Lincoln to name but a few. You can see photos of the team dancing on our new website- threeshiresclog.org.uk (Thanks to Darren from Harthill Morris). And thanks to Julie from Three Shires we also have a Facebook page. Now is a good time to come and see what we do, as during the winter months we don’t tend to dance out at different places, but concentrate on learning new dances and refining those most of us know already. (And of course increasing the hippocampus!) If you are interested in dancing with us or playing in the band please get in touch. We meet on Tuesdays in Harthill Village Hall at 7.30pm. (The 3rd Tuesday of the month at Todwick Village Hall). Phone Lesley on 01909 770129 for more information.

CASTLE STREET MEDICAL CENTRE The Patient Participation Group would like to thank our patients for their continued support. The practice has been through a period of change after being taken over by DCHS. It has taken some time for us to get used to a new regime, a different way of working, along with new forward looking ideas. The practice hope to have a new GP starting in January. The next Registrar rotation commences in December 2017 with two new doctors who are with us for four months' training. We are still looking into the possibility of obtaining a few more of the higher seat chairs, and I believe that DCHS have looked at the possibility of having hand rails fitted along the corridor wall. For some time now, the PPG have asked that photographs of staff members be displayed in the waiting room. Grant Stothard, chair of PPG.

SHERWOOD LODGE SITE, BOLSOVER The following points regarding the proposed development are submitted on behalf of Bolsover Civic Society. The Society has one hundred members, all of whom have been consulted. We welcome the development of the site and the enhanced choice of shops this will bring to the town, hopefully encouraging more people to shop locally. However, we are anxious that existing retailers are not threatened with duplicate businesses,We enclose with this response a list of businesses which would complement existing provision in the town and a list of those which would create undesirable competition. We are concerned about pedestrian access to the development and keen that pedestrian flow from Town End, Market Place and Oxcroft Lane is enhanced. The present plan seems dominated by road access. Public realm space is peripheral to the scheme, appears disconnected to the Market Place and pushed to the edges of the development. We would welcome greater thought given to these. We feel the green woodland area to the west of the service yard and stretching from the HillTop entrance, although not part of the development area, should be enhanced as part of the scheme, to retain a vitally important green space within the development. As the scheme is sited in the conservation area but includes no natural stone building materials we feel the retail units facing the car park should have the artificial materials above the glass entrances to each unit softened with a terrace of tree planting in front of the units. We would urge a higher level quality of building materials, with detailing, styling and typology more compatible to the character of existing buildings within the conservation area. We are concerned that the northern edge of the proposed foodstore is partly built over the Medieval Intrenchments. We welcome the discussion between the Society and representatives of Rothstone at the consultation meeting, agreeing that features of Sherwood Lodge should remain in the town and be given to Bolsover Civic Society and Old Bolsover Town Council.

The following is a list of shops presently NOT serving the town; • Toy shop, gifts and fancy goods • Stationary • Linen • Phone • Car spares • Hardware • Shoes • Adult and childrens’ clothes The following IS a list of those we already have and which if duplicated would face competition from existing retailers; • Pet supplies • Decorators • Party and wedding planner • Bridal fashions • Butchers x2 • Needlework, fabric and card craft • Greengrocer • Carpets and rugs x3 • Chemist x 3 • Newsagent • Vapourist • Bakers x 2 • Cards and gifts • Antiques • Cafes x5 • Hairdressers x 5 • Fast food x 5 • Factory shop • Beauty and nails x 3 • Chiropodist • Optician • Photography • Picture framer • Gym • Vet • Fish and chips • Estate agents x 2 • Gents barbers x2 Bernard Haigh, Secretary Bolsover Civic Society 21 Castle Lane, Bolsover, Derbyshire S446 PS
