Hello and a warm welcome from

Inside Bolsover District magazine Hello and welcome to the 10th edition of the iBD magazine! We have some new content within the magazine this month so keep your eyes peeled! We had an amazing response from our readers in April, some of who, wanted to get involved in the magazines editorials pieces.

Thinking about a change for Summer time? With summer time approaching there’s no better time to start thinking about a change of hair colour. Lightening the hair can make us feel brighter, fresher and ready for the warmer days. Whether it’s a few face framing highlights or a full balayage we would like to take this opportunity to show you the different options for lightening your hair. PRODUCT: The first thing we would like to make really clear is that hair that has been coloured will need to be lightened using a form of bleach. Hair bleach comes in lots of variations and depending on how it’s mixed can be extremely gentle. There is also lots of different ways it can be applied depending on the result you are trying to achieve. Hair when being lightened has to go through the ‘lightening process’ this means that tones that are present in the hair will be exposed, anything from red, orange and finally yellow. Your colourist will determine what tones will be exposed when they start to lighten your hair, and will then use a ‘toner’ after lightening to either cancel out the tones that are exposed or enhance them. Lightening and toning hair is a science, it is extremely difficult to do correctly and can take a long time to complete, by lightening the hair over a period of months the shade you require can be achieved. At BCS we will never compromise the hair’s condition, we will always be honest with you and if we feel your hair will not achieve the shade you require then we will give you alternatives. Occasionally hair will not react the way that we expect, it will sometimes never get to the level of lightness that is required, if this is the case then you must always listen to your colourist, they are experts in their field and will always offer a solution. The continuation of lightening the hair, to get to the shade which will not work for your hair, will ultimately result in breakage, this is not a great look and is irreparable, the hair would need to be cut off. We always use a bond rebuilder in our lightening products, this ensures that the hair is kept in optimal condition and maintains the hair’s strength at all times. COST: Lightening hair can be costly, it all depends on what colour we are working on from the start, if it’s a light shade and we are adding a few face framing highlights with no problems forecast then it could cost around £35-£40, but if the hair is darker and requires a lot more lightening and several toning applications the cost would increase dramatically and would likely cost £100-£200. The costs cannot be given over the phone, the colourist would need to see the hair, the shade required and then perform tests to determine whether the hair will achieve your goal. If the answer to these questions is yes the colourist would then be able to give a price.

PATCH TESTING: A patch test is required 48 hours prior to any colour application, this is to ensure you (the client) is not allergic to the colour we will be using. Patch testing is an absolute must for hair colouring and if not done by your colourist can have dramatic consequences, anything from inflamed scalp right through anaphylactic shock and hospitalisation. TECHNIQUE: Now that we have looked at the product, the cost and patch testing, we can delve into the technique. The balayage effect has been a dominant hair trend for lightening hair over the past few years. This trend is certainly here to stay and with over 50% of the colour work we do being balayage we forecast this to increase even more over the summer. “Balayage: balayage is a french word ‘to paint’ or ‘to sweep’ “ This means a natural result, sun kissed, no harsh lines and soft. The product is applied using a freehand technique and is normally a deeper shade at the root with a very fine soft highlight turning into a heavier highlight at the ends, much like the effect natural hair takes on when it has been in the sun. Think of a child’s hair and how it is almost always lighter on the ends. Ombré: ombré translates from French as “to shade” The result from this is darker at the root, lighter at the ends. This can ether create a subtle or dramatic difference. The technique can be done using lighter shades or can be done using different tones. For example a deep plum root running into a lilac end, or a deep honey root running into a platinum end. Ombré involves using a deeper colour at the root area, one, two or even three shades on the mid section to blend the colour and a lighter colour at the ends of the hair. Baby lights: this is a way of highlighting the hair using super fine highlights. Baby lights can be applied to the whole head, the top section ( t-section) or half a head. The result is multi-tonal, multidimensional, soft, and beautiful. The tones used during this technique are key, lightener will be applied using foils, once developed and rinsed a toner will be applied to either enhance or neutralise the tones exposed. Full Head: this is quite simply, a full head of colour covering every strand of hair in the same colour. Depending on the shade used for this result, you can achieve a natural result or a dramatic result. A full head colour of a honey blonde can look super soft and natural, but if you were to go for a steel blonde using the same technique the result would be dramatic and fashion focused. A full head colour is great if there is grey hair present as it will completely cover every strand, although the root area will need to be re-coloured every 4-6 weeks to keep it looking fresh. Bleach and tone: again quite simply a full head application of bleach followed by a toner. This is only used when the result needed cannot be

achieved using colour, there are many reasons for colour not being suitable, your colourist will explain what and why colour can’t be used. A bleach and tone can again have a soft result like a Norwegian blonde or a dramatic result by using different toners, this can be any shade from dusky pink, rose gold, lilac or silver. A bleach and tone has quite a lot of upkeep, toners rinse away and will need to be topped up. Depending on what tone is applied to the hair will depend on how quickly it will fade, your colourist can advise you on the maintenance. HOMECARE: Now that you have thought about what you want, how it’s going to be done, the cost involved and the maintenance to keep your colouring looking fresh, it’s time to discuss how to keep your colour looking fabulous at home. We will always advise you on which shampoo, conditioner and styling products to use on your hair. The shampoo and conditioner we recommend will maintain your hair colour by adding moisture, stopping the oxidation of the colour and protecting it from fading. You will have just spent quite a lot of money to get your hair the colour you want so it’s imperative to look after it, your shampoo and conditioner choice can make or break your hair. There are so many products available to you that it must be extremely daunting to stand in front of a shelf and make a choice, your choice should never be based on how nice the bottle looks or what the product smells like, this is not necessarily going to work for your hair. Your choice should be what your colourist recommends, they are the experts, they know everything about your hair, they know about the products they are recommending and they want your hair to look it’s best until they next see you. This goes without saying that the styling products they recommend will always be to help you style your hair, you will never get the same look on your hair as your stylist does if you are using completely different products at home. We offer a bring back service, this means that if you ever buy a product from us that you don’t like or you feel doesn’t work then we will replace it for you for something else. The reason we do this is because we are 100% confident in our products and recommendations and we will only ever advise you on something that will benefit your hair. Everything that you have read here will be discussed during a complimentary consultation at our salon, if you already visit us and think you want a change to your hair, or if you have never been to us before but would like to come and have a discussion about your hair, please call us on 01246 570391 or email info@beckycandysalons.co.uk and we can book you a consultation.

“Thankyou for reading this article, we hope it has given you an insight into the wonderful world of lightening hair, we would love you to let us know if you want us to cover any other hair, beauty or makeup topics, email becky@beckycandysalons.co.uk with your suggestions. THE 10 FREE PC PROGRAMS EVERYONE SHOULD HAVE!

There are millions of free and open source projects available, many of them better than any commercially available product. Below is a short listing of what we think are the best out there, broken down into ten categories. Antivirus and malware protection Most PC users realize that they need protection on their computer or may have an installed antivirus program from their computer manufacturer. What most don’t realize is that there are free programs that are just as good and in some cases better than the commercial products. Below are our recommendations. Backup solutions There are dozens of free and commercially available backup programs for computers. Unfortunately, many of those backups are stored locally, meaning if your house were to catch fire, get robbed, or if you lost your backup discs, all your data would be lost. To avoid loss of important data, we suggest users use online backup services. Browsers Although Microsoft Internet Explorer comes preinstalled on Windows computers. There are several excellent free alternatives that everyone should try. These free alternatives can often be faster, have more options, and in many cases be more secure than Internet Explorer.

Compression utility When downloading files on the Internet you’ll eventually encounter a .zip, .rar, or other compressed file. Dealing with these files can be easy with our below free file compression utility. Disc ripper and creation utility Creating an audio or data CD/DVD, ripping the data from an audio CD, or creating a CD from a .ISO file can also be done freely using our below free recommendation. E-mail E-mail is yet another service that can be done freely. Most users today use online e-mail solutions like the one listed below. However, for those still using an e-mail client such as Microsoft Outlook we strongly suggest one or both of the below suggestions. FTP, SFTP, and SSH Utility Users who maintain their own web page or need to upload or download files to or from a server have to use an FTP utility or an SSH client. There are many commercial programs capable of doing this but our below free recommendations beats them all. Image editor, paint program, and picture organizer There are many great free solutions for editing, creating, and organizing your images on your computer. Many of the programs capable of doing these tasks can be several hundred dollars, but all of the below programs are completely free. Multimedia There are dozens of different multimedia programs with different capabilities and limitations. Below are our top free multimedia programs for watching video files and recording audio. Office Suite An Office suite such as Microsoft Office is often one of the most expensive programs that a user can install on their computer. Why install these expensive programs when there are free solutions that are just as good.

The internet began life in 1969, when scientists working for the US Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA, now known as DARPA) connected computer networks at the University of California and the Stanford Research Institute.

As you might expect for a technology so expansive and ever-changing, it is impossible to credit the invention of the Internet to a single person. The Internet was the work of dozens of pioneering scientists, programmers and engineers who each developed new features and technologies that eventually merged to become the “information superhighway” we know today. Long before the technology existed to actually build the Internet, many scientists had already anticipated the existence of worldwide networks of information. Nikola Tesla toyed with the idea of a “world wireless system” in the early 1900s, and visionary thinkers like Paul Otlet and Vannevar Bush conceived of mechanized, searchable storage systems of books and media in the 1930s and 1940s. Still, the first practical schematics for the Internet would not arrive until the early 1960s, when MIT’s J.C.R. Licklider popularized the idea of an “Intergalactic Network” of computers. Shortly thereafter, computer scientists developed the concept of “packet switching,” a method for effectively transmitting electronic data that would later become one of the major building blocks of the Internet. The first workable prototype of the Internet came in the late 1960s with the creation of ARPANET, or the Advanced Research Projects Agency Network. Originally funded by the U.S. Department of Defense, ARPANET used packet switching to allow multiple computers to communicate on a single network. The technology continued to grow in the 1970s after scientists Robert Kahn and Vinton Cerf developed Transmission Control Protocol and Internet Protocol, or TCP/IP, a communications

model that set standards for how data could be transmitted between multiple networks. ARPANET adopted TCP/IP on January 1, 1983, and from there researchers began to assemble the “network of networks” that became the modern Internet. The online world then took on a more recognizable form in 1990, when computer scientist Tim BernersLee invented the World Wide Web. While it’s often confused with the Internet itself, the web is actually just the most common means of accessing data online in the form of websites and hyperlinks. The web helped popularize the Internet among the public, and served as a crucial step in developing the vast trove of information that most of us now access on a daily basis. More internet history facts;

.

The first webcam was created in 1991 at the Cambridge University Computer Science Department to let researchers see if their coffee pot was full without having to go and check. The first ebook was the American Declaration of Independence, typed up by hand and posted on the internet in 1971. This was the start of Project Gutenberg, which now offers over 34,000 free ebooks. Spam is older than the World Wide Web: the first spam email was sent in 1978. The first computer virus, created in 1988, wasn’t meant to harm the machines it infected: its creator wanted to use it to measure the size of the internet, but a programming error meant it could make infected machines unusable. It is estimated to have caused $10–100 million worth of damage.

Get Journaling and Be Happy! Most of us lead lives that can be hectic, even overwhelming at times. Many people find journaling a useful way of clearing their minds and focussing on the positive things that make life worthwhile. Journaling shouldn’t be confused with keeping a diary. The idea of writing an extended description of daily events and thoughts will be off-putting to those who are time-poor – and to commit to doing this every day can feel like a burden. This is why most diaries don’t last beyond January! But a daily or weekly note of positive experiences can take as much or as little time as you want it to. All that is needed is a notebook and pens – and at the end of your journaling session you can feel more removed from life’s stresses and thankful for the happier aspects of life. You might want to include some of the following in your journal: 1. A sentence a day diary. Think about one experience in your day that made you happy or proud and record what this was in a single line. This could be something as trivial as seeing the first daffodil of spring, or a line in a book or film. 2. A quick sketch of an object that you like. A lot of people now use colouring books for therapy – but drawing your own little picture is just as good, if not better. 3. A random list of enjoyment. List your favourite flowers, chocolates, films, books…anything. Select one thing from the list and promise yourself to revisit it sometime soon. 4. A recipe or meal that you would like to have again. 5. A review of a book or film, focussing on what you liked about it. Journaling is mostly about the act of writing it - but looking back over the pages of your journal at a future point turns it into a happy memory book, which might lift spirits during times when your mood is not so good. Those who are suffering from poor health can also find journaling useful in coping with their treatment schedule – or with desired changes of lifestyle. You might need to take more exercise or change

your diet, and actively recording progress in a notebook can help. For example, if your aim is to eat seven portions of fruit and vegetables per day, recording what you have eaten in a journal gives additional satisfaction at your achievements and acts as an incentive to stick to the diet. You can also make a note of the dishes that you enjoyed the most, reminding you what worked best. Leaving space to make a note of how well you feel at the end of the week or month can also reinforce positive changes that have been made. No matter how you chose to keep a journal, writing down happy thoughts, achievements and feelings can help you to be a happier person – and it only need take 5 or 10 minutes out of your day. NUTTY CHICKEN SATAY STRIPS ........................................

Keep these nutty chicken satay strips in the fridge for a healthy choice when you’re peckish. The chicken is served with cucumber and sweet chilli sauce

INGREDIENTS .........................

. 2 tbsp chunky peanut butter (without palm oil or sugar) . 1 garlic clove, finely grated . 1 tsp Madras curry powder . Few shakes soy sauce . 2 tsp lime juice . 2 skinless, chicken breast fillets (about 300g)

cut into thick strips about 10cm cucumber, cut into fingers sweet chilli sauce to serve

24

METHOD

.........................

1. Heat oven to 200C, 180C fan, gas 4 and line a baking tray with non-stick paper. 2. Mix the peanut butter with the garlic, curry powder, soy sauce and lime in a bowl. Some nut butters are thicker than others, so if necessary, add a dash of boiling water to get a coating consistency. Add the chicken strips, mix well then arrange on the baking sheet, spaced apart, and bake in the oven for 8-10 mins until cooked, but still juicy. 3. Eat warm with the cucumber sticks and chilli sauce, or leave to cool then keep in the fridge for up to 2 days.

Bullying; a word used far too often in today’s society, and one that can have dire consequences. According to the latest statistics from Ditch the Label 1.5 million young people, which is just over 50%, have been bullied in the past year and 19% of these are subject to reoccurring bullying. This shows a staggering amount of children in school are exposed to mental health issues which can arise from constant abuse. The modern world of technology has increased this percentage over the years with social media being used as an easily accessible platform for bullying, and with the pressures of education, socialising and extra-curricular activities young people hold a huge weight on their shoulders.

Big thanks to Cherry Marsh from all at iBD Magazine and also, a special thanks to Kym, our freelance journalist. Jamie Snarski - Editor

Psychologist Dr Linda Papadopoulos’s interest lies in how young people today form and conform to identity. She uses the term Crowdsourcing Identity which places emphasis on the growing question young people face of “who am i supposed to be?” rather than the question they should be learning “who am I really?”. There are many pressures placed on children’s shoulders when it comes to identity, such as how they must dress, how they must behave, and most importantly; a need to conform to a certain image which is deemed acceptable within society and in the eyes of their fellow students. In this respect social media is used not just as a way to connect, but to note how “valued” an individual is, the behaviour received online begins to form an identity depending on the response from something posted. There are many forms of bullying, but all have some effect on young people either directly or indirectly. Here are just a few statistics: One third of children between the ages of 11 and 16 have been bullied online, with 25% of those being bullied reporting that the bullying was ‘ongoing’ From 2011 to 2016, there has been an 88% increase in the number of incidences involving cyberbullying.

38% of young people who have experienced cyberbullying, either as a victim or as a witness, reported that the bullying affected them in some way.

The Diana’s Award Anti-Bullying Campaign, a campaign created in the name of Princess Diana, aims to reduce bullying across the country. One of the main projects of the campaign has involved over 24,000 young people who have stepped forward to become Ambassadors for their school. I had the pleasure of meeting Cherry Marsh, a 15 year old student with a passion for the campaign. As an ambassador and 2017 Award holder, her mission is clear, to put an end to the suffering children face in the hands of bullying. Recently Cherry made the trip to London where she visited the Facebook headquarters to find out more about what anti-bullying protocols Facebook has in place, and The Diana Award headquarters to undergo discussions around the subject. Whilst at the Diana Award headquarters she took part in many team-building exercises, meetings and discussions along with other young ambassadors who share the same passion. “The Facebook headquarters was really interesting, we found out a lot of information about the policies and structures they have in place, especially for under 16s who have specially implemented safety protocols set up by Facebook. There is an issue with age on Facebook, a lot of young people sign up with an alternative date of birth. Facebook monitor their site 24/7 and if someone has signed up with an older age but talking to friends who are much younger then this is reported back immediately. They also review their privacy policies regularly to ensure internet safety, so it is best to check these settings often to see what has changed.” Having protocols like this implemented means that Facebook, and possibly other social media sites have noted the issues that come with easy communication. Their site is not just robotic and it’s reassuring to know that there are some defences in place against different forms of abuse.

But as Cherry discussed, there are ways to help stop bullying before it begins. Taking time away from the pressures of social media, or simply speaking to someone before an issue gets out of hand. “Knowing the different ways of communication which are open to someone wanting to discuss bullying is important. We have 24,000 board members like me across the UK, if you are unable to find a campaigner at your school you will find plenty of information on our website with videos, blogs and tips. You can even become a Youth Board member yourself” It’s just as important for parents and guardians to be aware of the pressures children face in this technological world. Information and guidance can be found at www.antibullyingpro.com Always remember, Individuality is extremely important…In Cherry’s words

“Always be your authentic self!”
