EDITORS CHOICE
A break, whether it be a simple weekend away or an all-out inclusive holiday abroad is a perfect way for families to reconnect, and has even been proven to benefit a child’s psychological health. As adults, we countdown the days until we are sat on a beach in an exotic location, a place where we can recharge and unwind, but holidays can be profoundly beneficial for children too. Over the last decade the demands of school have increased, both within and outside of education. Children have more homework, exams and social pressures to contend with meaning their stress levels can peak during semesters. Parents have their own pressures to worry about, leaving seldom room for family reconnection.
So can a holiday truly help with both adult and child stress? The answer is Yes, it can. The relief from stress begins as early as booking the family holiday. Getting together to choose a location provides quality time in itself and allows the whole family to talk about a positive subject, cheerful conversations like these releases endorphins and reduces cortisol (the stress hormone) benefiting the whole household. Timelines can be viewed in a positive and negative light, but when it comes to vacation they are also a great source of excitement. The holiday is booked and you can breathe your first sigh of relief, although there will be 101 things to do before jetting off you are safe in the knowledge that it is only a short time to wait. Having a visible timeline such as a countdown calendar helps a child to see light at the end of the long tunnel of study and enables their mind to focus on something else.
Here are a few statistics to mull over:
> Only a quarter of children say they talk to parents more than once a week about issues that matter (Child of Our Time) > Two thirds of conversations between a parent and child revolve around daily routine (Elizabeth Buie, TES) > 16% of children at school age loose sleep due to educational stress (BBC Newsroom, 2017)

According to Doctor Margot Sunderland, a child psychologist, a child’s genetic neurological systems Play and Seek are maximised during vacation, more so than at home. The simple act of burying their feet, playing games with them in the pool or taking them for a ride on your back exercises the Play system, whilst exploration and adventure utilises their Seeking function. Once these systems are triggered the happy hormones in our body are released, reducing stress and allowing for a sense of closeness. As well as psychology, there are many health benefits of a family holiday. Vitamin D helps to support a healthy immune system preventing illness, a good dose of Vitamin D is even possible in the UK, with our summers appearing to be longer many turn to our coasts or countryside for a break, no matter the destination, as long as the sun is shining consumption of Vitamin D is possible. Laughter really is the best medicine, and if there is one thing that everyone does on holiday, it’s laugh. With stress reduction hormones in play a sense of calm surrounds holidaymakers which makes for a fun environment giving you and your dearest the very best family time.
Another huge plus for holidaymakers is the food consumption. It’s very easy to get in to a routine during mealtimes at home. On holiday a whole range of fresh foods are available. A BBQ is often first choice for camping holidays which is great fun for the kids, and there is nothing better than sitting around the fire eating heartwarming foods whilst chatting away without distractions. There are so many health and psychological benefits to going on a family vacation. But overall there is nothing better than having a great, fun-filled and relaxing time away from busy life.
Where is your next holiday?

Is Sitting On An Exercise Ball At Work A Bad Idea? Stability-Ball-Desk
An exercise ball, also known as a stability ball, is traditionally used in exercise routines as means to improve balance, allow exercisers to do exercises they would not otherwise be able to do (i.e. using the ball against a wall to squat) and expand range of motion (i.e. crunches). Use of exercise balls has moved out of the gym and into the office, where increasing numbers of people use them in place of chairs.
Sitting On An Exercise Ball: The Benefits
The idea of sitting on the ball versus a traditional chair is that this change can increase core strength, since the abdominal muscles must be constantly engaged to avoid falling off. Improving core strength means improving posture, balance, and stability. Proponents also cite increased calorie burn as a benefit of maintaining your balance throughout the day.
Sitting On An Exercise Ball: The Risks
Opponents of using exercise balls to sit on at work argue that what is desirable in a chair is not the same as what is desirable in a piece of exercise equipment. A chair, they say, should take pressure off of the low back and provide support for the arms, which can alleviate discomfort and lessen fatigue. The constant muscle activation required when sitting on a ball for prolonged periods can increase fatigue and make back pain worse.
Journal of the Canadian Chiropractic Association, 2 low back pain sufferers reported improvement in symptoms after changing from a chair to a ball.4 > Sitting on a ball versus a chair may increase passive caloric expenditure. A study from SUNY Buffalo showed a 4.1 calorie per hour increase in energy expenditure from sitting on a ball versus a chair.5 This translates to an extra 32 calories over an 8-hour work day.
So, Is Sitting On An Exercise Ball At Work A Bad Idea?
Yes.
In short, yes. Chances are you will experience more low back and neck discomfort without any benefit to your posture or core muscle strength. If you like the idea of the extra calorie burn, you can get the same effect from walking 1/3 of a mile at lunch or during a break. Getting up from your chair a few times per day, stretching and walking around the office will also do more to improve your posture and reduce pain than sitting on a ball. The idea of improving your health while doing something you have to be doing anyway is attractive. However, this is not a good means to do it. If you want to improve your health, eating healthfully, being active, stretching, and engaging in an effective exercise program are much better ideas than swapping out your chair for an exercise ball. Save the exercise ball for crunches and wall squats.
Sitting On An Exercise Ball: The Research
I found a number of studies examining the benefits and drawbacks of sitting on an exercise ball at work. With a few exceptions, the research overwhelmingly shows that a chair is a better option than a ball, at least when you’re at work. > A 2006 paper published in Human Factors examined differences between sitting on a stability ball and in an office chair in terms of trunk muscle activation and lumbar spine posture.1 The authors found that, though there was a small increase in the activation of certain trunk muscles, sitting on a ball resulted in significant discomfort. So, their recommendation is to avoid using a ball for this purpose. > Another study looked at similar variables and found an increase in “spinal shrinkage” in people who sit on an exercise ball,2 which certainly doesn’t sound desirable. > Yet another research paper concluded that “prolonged sitting on a dynamic, unstable seat surface does not significantly affect the magnitudes of muscle activation, spine posture, spine loads or overall spine stability.” The authors also found higher levels of discomfort in the stability ball users, which may be a result of soft tissue compression against the ball. > I found 1 paper that supports the use of stability balls for decreasing pain. Short, long, bouncy, wavy, sleek, braided. When it comes to our hair the list goes on. Luscious locks are a musthave for us girls which means plenty of styling, heat and products, but what is the constant battle for the perfect look doing to our hair? At Becky Candy Salons, we pride ourselves on giving you the very best result whilst maintaining hair health, which requires giving you precise aftercare to ensure you leave knowing exactly how to look after your new do post-appointment.
The very first, and possibly the most important thing to note is that like you, your hair is individual. You may have the same style or colour as your neighbour, friend, family member or even an a sister, but the very fabric of your hair is unique to you. This means that your haircare has to be personalised too. Finding products that work well for you is key and something your stylist is a pro in, they will be able to direct you to the perfect shampoo, hairspray, heat defence, volume booster or mask. Visiting your hairdresser is often a luxury, so why not make the most of it by asking some important questions about haircare and products?
> Heat protection is a must! We are
forever drying, styling and curling our hair which requires a lot of heat. Heat leads to drying, which leads to breakage, which ultimately becomes damage. We are all excellent at applying sun protection to our skin when the weather heats up, and we should treat our hair in exactly the same way. Haircare is advancing, paving the way for UV hair exposure correcting products which protect from direct heat and the sun, perfect for this time of year.
There are so many types of hair, and all types have the products to match, so it is difficult to get to grips with the ones that work best for us, without breaking the bank. Before you reach for the “top hair product” on sale first identify which hair type you have. If you are unsure, ask your stylist who will be able to give you accurate guidance. According to hair restoration specialist Dr James Marotta, it is completely normal to lose between 50 and 150 hair strands every day, this is all part of the body’s regenerative cycle. Dr Marotta even suggests a way to check for abnormalities in hair regeneration; by taking roughly 60 strands of hair between your fingers and lightly pulling slowly down the strands an average of five to eight hairs should emerge from the cluster, but an excess of fifteen or more suggest signs of damage which requires immediate action. Damaged hair is something most of us have to contend with at least once in our lives, for some it’s a never-ending battle. Here are few tips for correcting and preventing damage to your precious locks.
> Your hair will thank you for the regular trims. Our
trips to the salon provide a great opportunity to get a new look, but even if you aren’t looking for a dramatic change having your ends trimmed is essential to hair health. The very ends of your hair are prone to most damage because it’s the area most concentrated on during styling, it is also the oldest part of your hair and having it trimmed leaves a healthier look and allows for new growth to develop at the root, which is especially important for those of us wanting long locks. “There are so many ways to maintain healthy hair, including our food consumption. Like anything else in our bodies, we are what we eat, a healthy diet containing lots of protein is beneficial to our hair. Some examples of excellent nutritional foods are: nuts such as almonds, walnuts and pecans, eggs, salmon, avocado and sweet potato!”
Our hair is often our best feature, so why not give it the very best chance of making you shine? > Check your shampoo and conditioner. This may sound like a simple one, shampoo can’t really be that harmful, can it? In some cases, yes. Parabens can be a serious problem for our hair as they mimic oestrogen, reducing the production of hair growth. Parabens are often found in products such as soaps, cleansers and most importantly, shampoos. So before picking up a daily haircare product such as shampoo or conditioner, check the label and read the ingredients. There are many healthy alternatives to parabens which are becoming more popular, such as argon oil which is full of hair benefits.

DREAM CAR REVIEW
COMBINING BRUTE FORCE WITH ASTON LOOKS IS A RECIPE FOR SUCCESS.
Let’s take a moment to be thankful that we now live in a world were we can walk into a new car showroom, and drive away in a 700-horsepower car. The base Aston Martin DB11 with its 600-hp 5.2-liter twin-turbo V12 isn’t what we’d call slow, but the British automaker decided to take it up a notch with the new DBS Superleggera. Strike that, Aston has taken things up several notches. The 5.2-liter twin-turbo V12 now produces a whopping 715 hp and 664 lb-ft of torque, making it an match for almost any car on the market. Power is sent to the rear wheels through an eight speed automatic transmission - sorry manual lovers. 0-60 mph takes 3.4 seconds, 0-100 mph takes 6.4 seconds, and the top speed is 211 mph. The DBS features a new active valve exhaust with quad pipes, which is said to deliver “commanding and powerful sound character” while still maintaining the refinement of a grand tourer. This should help it sound a bit livelier, while reduced weight and stiffer suspension should make it feel more giddy from behind the wheel. For more cream cars visit: carbuzz.com 30

Kaiser Chiefs are an English indie rock band from Leeds who formed in 2000 as Parva, releasing one studio album, 22, in 2003, before renaming and establishing themselves in their current name that same year. Since their formation the band consists of lead vocalist Ricky Wilson, guitarist Andrew “Whitey” White, bassist Simon Rix, keyboardist and occasional drummer Nick “Peanut” Baines and since 2013 drummer Vijay Mistry, who replaced founding drummer Nick Hodgson who left the band in late 2012. Primarily inspired by new wave and punk rock music of the late 1970s and 1980s, the band have released six original studio albums: Employment (2005), Yours Truly, Angry Mob (2007), Off with Their Heads (2008), The Future Is Medieval (2011), Education, Education, Education & War (2014) and Stay Together (2016). One EP: Lap of Honour (2005), one compilation album: Souvenir: The Singles 2004–2012 (2012) and numerous
singles, including the number one hit song “Ruby”. Their album Employment enjoyed critical and commercial success with over three million copies sold. It has won the band three Brit Awards, including the award for Best British Group, a NME award for Best Album, and was shortlisted for the Mercury Prize. Their UK hit singles include 2004 and 2005 number 9 hit “I Predict a Riot”, 2007 UK number 1 hit “Ruby”, which has sold over 461,000 copies, from their platinum album Yours Truly, Angry Mob plus a further two Top 20 singles in 2007 with “The Angry Mob” and “Everything Is Average Nowadays”. In 2008, they had a UK number 5 hit with the post-punk revival track “Never Miss a Beat”. Their 5 singles “Ruby”, “I Predict a Riot”, “Everyday I Love You Less and Less”, “Never Miss a Beat” and “Oh My God” had sold a combined total of 1.1 million up to August 2012. Their latest top 40 single, “Coming Home” hit number 31 in 2014. Their album Education, Education, Education & War hit number one in the albums chart also in 2014. Stay Together, the band’s sixth studio album, was released on 7 October 2016. It was co-written and produced by Brian Higgins, whose production company Xenomania has worked with the likes of Girls Aloud and Pet Shop Boys. The album’s name is a reference to the song “We Stay Together”. The first single from the album, “Parachute”, was released on 14 June 2016. The second single, “Hole In My Soul” was released 18 August 2016 and the third and final single, “We Stay Together” was released on 9 December 2016. This welcome return to the limelight saw ‘Stay Together’ push new boundaries to “take this nondescript sound and stuff it impressively full of sing-a-long hooks, covering topics including monogamy (We Stay Together) and shagging (Good Clean Fun)” as it marked an entirely new direction for the band, who went for a more dance-oriented sound. While Education, Education, Education and War was more focused on politics and the perils of war, the Kaiser Chiefs made the album with a focus on love and relationships. Wilson elaborated further on the stark contrast between this last album and ‘Stay Together’: “The thing about writing a protest album is it’s straightforward. Only an idiot would disagree with you. You’re just saying war is bad. But when you start talking about relationships like on this record it’s harder because there’s a lot more blurred line. There’s no right or wrong.” Tickets for the KAISER CHIEFS show are available from: WOLVERHAMPTON – Racecourse

COMMUNITY NEWS WORK BEGINS ON NEW RESIDENTIAL DEVELOPMENT IN BOLSOVER Award winning national housebuilder Jones Homes has started work on its exciting new residential development, Cavendish Grange, which is just off Oxcroft Lane on the edge of this historic market town of Bolsover. Formerly brownfield land, the 3.45 acre site will be transformed into a stunning new residential development of 35 properties, most of which will be four bedroom detached homes. With an enviable location close to the popular tourist attraction of Bolsover Castle and within walking distance of the town centre, the development is likely to appeal to young professionals and growing families and those looking for a low maintenance, elegant and spacious new home in this highly sought after area. Jones Homes has worked closely with the local Planning Authority to ensure that the designs of the homes at Cavendish Grange are reflective of the local character of Bolsover and enhance the town's desirability as an attractive place to live. Built to Jones Homes' exacting standards, the homes benefit from thoughtfully designed elevations and a variety of external finishes for stunning kerb appeal. They also boast an exceptional internal specification, with high quality contemporary kitchens with integrated appliances, modern bathrooms and en suites and a range of luxurious fixtures and fittings. Sales and marketing director at Jones Homes, Jayne Swift, commented: "We are delighted to be in Bolsover and introduce our high quality, stylish and superior specification homes to buyers from across the Chesterfield area. CASTLE STREET MEDICAL CENTRE PPG. I would wish to thank Jamie, and Inside Bolsover for publishing our reports over the past years. These reports, appearing in the magazine, has helped the group to inform our patients of changes and events taking place at the surgery. It has also helped us to increase our patient numbers. The latest news for those who haven't been into the surgery, is that it will close for a period of some 12 weeks, I believe some time in August. The closure is to enable major work to be carried out, to the structure, and to the inside. Air conditioning is just one item on the agenda. Can I suggest that patients look on the website for details. During the closure, patients will be treated at the Welbeck Road Clinic, and at Bolsover Hospital. This will be my final report from the PPG. I resigned as Chair at the end of June. I have enjoyed my time as chair, 7 years, and throughout that period, the PPG has been instrumental in helping Dr Kar and Karen Bestwick take on the major changes that have taken place. i therefor want to thank every member of the group, from the bottom of my heart, for their input and enthusiasm during that time, non of the changes would have been carried out if it wasn't for their assistance. I hope that the group will continue and assist DCHS in any way that they might require. Grant Stothard, Chair of CSMC PPG
