“In October 2017, Finley and Huey were playing in the garden. I went to put tools back in the shed I heard Huey shout daddy! When I turned around Finley was lying on the floor, as I ran over to him he was grey, foaming at the mouth and was having what looked like a seizure. I shouted to his mum, and, fearing the worst we called an ambulance. When we got to hospital they gave Finley several anti-seizure drugs, none of which worked, and finally they had to sedate and ventilate him to try and break the cycle. Several hours later they woke him up. He was very agitated, confused and kept dropping in and out of consciousness all night until finally he woke up at 5.30am and spoke. We were so grateful that he came back to us, however, he couldn’t walk properly and his coordination was completely gone. After a couple of days everything started to come back little by little, every morning he woke up and after six days he was 90% back to full health.”

“Thankfully over the next month Finley was completely back to normal. A couple of more months passed and in February we had an appointment at hospital to review how Finley was getting on, and in the hopes of receiving some answers. We were told that all his scans, blood tests, lumber picture etc were all normal and there were no definite answers to what had happened. He could have had a seizure or he could have fallen and banged his head. Not knowing what was going to happen next, we carried on and Finley was great, until the beginning of April when, while in the garden with his Nan, the exact same happened. We called the ambulance and off we went to hospital again. It was like déjà vu in every way possible. They gave him the same drugs and after no response they put him to sleep again, but this time when they woke him several hours later he came around and was talking straight away, but his coordination and walking was still like the previous time. Again, it took him a few days to start coming around but on Saturday night, when we thought he was well enough to come home, and even though he was still a bit wobbly, the doctors agreed as all test results were clear again so they allowed us to go home with rescue medicine in case he had another episode.” “Finley went straight to bed as he was exhausted. The following morning, half way to the bathroom, he collapsed and had another seizure. We couldn’t believe this was happening again we called the ambulance, used the rescue medication but with no affect and he was taken to hospital once again. The

same drugs and tests were done, and then Finley had to be put to sleep again. However, when they woke him this time, several hours later, he was still fitting so had to be transferred to Sheffield intensive care unit. “They kept Finley sedated and ventilated for nearly 24 hours and following an MRI scan, they woke him. Like before, he was very confused and agitated. He got better with each day and before they discharged us they diagnosed Finley with epilepsy. Finley now takes twice daily medication and 2 weeks on he is almost back to normal but gets tired very easily, we are just entering the unknown like anyone dealing with epilepsy. There are no definite answers and you are never sure what will happen next.” “So, this is Finley’s story, and this is why we have decided to do a sponsored parachute jump to raise awareness and raise money for epilepsy research. As like myself, until something like this happens to you, you never really know how much it affects your life.” Wayne Pettinger

CHOCOLATE FRIDGE CAKE ........................................

Sophisticated and intensely chocolatey with a hit of juicy raisins and crunchy biscuit pieces, serve this decadent chocolate fridge cake as a teatime treat

INGREDIENTS .........................

. 1 mugful mixed dried fruit (about 225g) . ½ mugful brandy or juice (about 110ml) . 300g dark chocolate (70% cocoa solids) . ½ pack butter (about 125g, salted or unsalted), plus extra for the tin . 3 tbsp golden syrup . 13 digestive biscuits (about 200g) . 100g pack toasted flaked almonds or roasted hazelnuts, chopped (see tip, below)

METHOD

......................... 1. Put the dried fruit in a small bowl and pour in just enough brandy or juice to cover. Microwave for 2 mins until steaming, then set aside. 2. The non-messy way to chop chocolate is to smash it (still wrapped) onto your work surface, then unwrap it down to the foil and snap it (still in foil) into small bits using your fingers. Empty the chocolate into a microwaveable bowl. Add the butter and golden syrup, cover the bowl with cling film and microwave for 2 mins until melted. Set aside. 3. Meanwhile, line a 20cm square tin with baking parchment, using a little butter to stick it in place. (You can also use foil but it’s more fiddly to peel off later, or cling film if you don’t mind wrinkles on the underside of your cake.) 4. Take a third, large bowl. Use your fingers to break the biscuits into it. Stir in the nuts, soaked fruit and soaking liquid, then mix everything together. Pour the melted chocolate into the bowl with the biscuits, using a spatula or spoon to scrape out every last bit of chocolate. Mix together until everything is coated in chocolate. 5. Check the ingredients list to make sure everything is accounted for (it’s surprisingly easy to miss something in this recipe), then tip the chocolate mixture into the tin, pushing well into corners and flattening the top. Put in the fridge (no need to cover) for 4 hrs or overnight until set. To serve, remove from tin, peel away the parchment and cut into 16 squares (any crumbly bits that fall off make tasty samples for the cook). Will keep for up to 1 week in an airtight container in the fridge. Can be frozen for up to 1 month.

1997: The Birth of Social Media The first social media site that everyone can agree actually was social media was a website called Six Degrees. It was named after the ‘six degrees of separation’ theory and lasted from 1997 to 2001. Six Degrees allowed users to create a profile and then friend other users. Six Degrees even allowed those who didn’t register as users to confirm friendships and connected quite a few people this way. From Six Degrees, the internet moved into the era of blogging and instant messaging. Although blogging may not seem like social media precisely, the term fits because people were suddenly able to communicate with a blog other instantly as well as other readers. The term “blog” is a form of the phrase “Weblog” which was coined by Jorn Barger, an early blogger that was the editor of the site “Robot Wisdom.” From there, ICQ was born and most members of Generation X remember ICQ and the service that was created shortly thereafter, America Online, with AOL’s instant messenger especially prominent in the social media lineup.

2000: The Internet is Everywhere By the year 2000, around 100 million people had access to the internet, and it became quite common for people to be engaged socially online. Of course, then it was looked at as an odd hobby at best. Still, more and more people began to utilize chat rooms for making friends, dating and discussing topics that they wanted to talk about. But the huge boom of social media was still to come.

2003: The First Social Media Surge Although the younger generation of today might not know about it, back in the early 2000’s the website MySpace was the popular place to set up a profile and make friends. MySpace was the original social media profile website, leading into and inspiring websites like Facebook. But even though MySpace has a very small user base today compared to Facebook and Twitter, there are musicians who have used MySpace to promote their music and even be heard by record producers and other artists. Colbie Caillat is an example.

Another website that was one of the beginning social media websites was LinkedIn, still a social media website today, geared specifically towards professionals who want to network with each other. In fact, most of the social media websites we have today are similar to LinkedIn, in that they are specifically about one particular thing, or they have some kind of unique quality that has made them popular. While MySpace was a general social media site, LinkedIn was, and is still is, meant for professional businesspeople to connect with each other to network, find jobs and socialize.

2005: Facebook and Twitter In 2004, Mark Zuckerberg launched what would soon become the social media giant that would set the bar for all other social media services. Facebook is the number one social media website today and it currently boasts over a billion users. However, back in 2004, Facebook (TheFacebook.com then) was launched just for Harvard students. Zuckerberg saw the potential and released the service to the world at the website facebook.com. In 2006, the popularity of text messaging or SMS inspired Jack Dorsey, Biz Stone, Noah Glass and Evan Williams to create Twitter, a service that had the unique distinction of allowing users to send “tweets” of 140 characters or less. Today, Twitter has over 500 million users.

Around 2010: The Rest of the Pack Before long, there were dozens of other websites providing social media services of some kind. Flickr was one of the earliest and still is one of themost popular photo sharing sites, but others include Photobucket and Instagram, with Instagram gaining popularity today as one of the top social media sites to include on business cards and other media. Tumblr, a microblogging website started in 2007by David Karp and now owned by Yahoo, is one of the sites that could be seen

sprouting up in the late 2000s. Foursquare was quite a popular website for a while, particularly with smartphones being used so extensively, and then there is Pinterest, Spotify, and many others. Some of the most popular social media platforms in the late 2000’s included: Google Buzz, Loopt, Blippy, and Groupon. One of the things that started happening right in this time period is that social media not only became widely used, it also became widespread in business. Websites were starting to list their social media addresses, businesses would include Facebook and Twitter addresses on their television commercials and many tools were being built to include social media on websites – for example: WordPress plugins that would allow users to include not only links to their social media websites, but also to include their latest social media posts directly on their websites. Social media icons were seen everywhere and it became almost unusual to see businesses or brands without them. In addition, social media began to be one of the ways in which internet marketers and website owners would boost the visibility of their websites. The benefits of social media marketing for business began to become quite clear to business owners large and small. Social media bookmarking became quite popular and there were services that would bookmark a post or

a website across dozens or even hundreds of social media services.

Social Media Today Social media today consists of thousands of social media platforms, all serving the same – but slightly different purpose. Of course, some social media platforms are more popular than others, but even the smaller ones get used by a portion of the population because each one caters to a very different type of person. For example: Instagram caters to the kind of person that communicates through photographs best, and other platforms such as Twitter are perfect for those who communicate in short bursts of information. As mentioned, businesses are using social media to promote their products and services in a brand new way and so each form of social media serves a purpose that the others available may not.

The Future of Social Media Although it is impossible to know what the future of social media holds, it is clear that it will continue. Humans are social animals and the more ability to communicate with each other on the level that each person likes best, the more prevalent social media will become. With new and exciting technologies just around the corner, social media will be interesting to see in the coming decades.

With summer time fast approaching we want to introduce you to the worlds leading face and body toning treatments that are available. Whether you are hitting the beach on your summer holidays or getting yourself ready to be a bride, groom, wedding guest or attend a special summer time event there is most definitely going to be some skin on show, face or body. We join a gym to tone our body and loose weight but to also feel good, we don’t usually join a gym to tone our face, yet this is the main feature we look at through the mirror everyday. By concentrating a little more on the face we can achieve a feeling of confidence, we look and feel brighter, we look younger, more toned and have a smoother wrinkle reduced skin texture. Now we don’t want to forget the body here so again the gym is a great start but it takes lots of hours and effort to tone muscle, not to mention the aches and pains afterwards. Working out doesn’t do anything for cellulite either, all your hard work will achieve amazing results if you stick to the workouts and a great diet but what if you could achieve great results without hours and hours in the gym? Well let us introduce you to CACI, the worlds leading face and body treatment. CACI is a world leader in the beauty industry and has been used by professionals not only in the beauty industry but the medical industry too. The treatments consist of using a micro-current stimulation which delivers tiny electrical impulses that mirror the body’s own natural bio electrical field. 40

Originally developed for treating facial palsy, micro-current therapy is now also used widely in physiotherapy for pain control and in hospitals for wound healing. During a face treatment all 32 facial muscles are physically manipulated using soft cotton tipped wands (probes) or other attachments that transmit the micro-current impulses. The micro-current then re-educates the muscle resulting in a firmer, more toned, supple appearance with less wrinkles and lines. Although a remarkable difference is seen after the first treatment, the benefits of micro-current are cumulative and typically a course of 10-15 treatments will be required for optimum results. The CACI face treatment can be focused in one area like the jowl or eyes or can be used all over the face to give a more youthful appearance. The body treatments available also work in the same way, the CACI tummy toning treatment is aimed at those who want to define their stomach muscles. Using electrically conductive pads, it will enhance and strengthen the muscles, keeping them firm and toned. It is recommended in conjunction with diet and exercise. A typical 20 minute stomach treatment is the equivalent of doing 360 perfect sit ups, without the pain of 360 sit ups. This is due to the muscle being stimulated in a way that doesn’t release lactic acid, this is what causes the aches and pains the following day. ECM works slightly different and combines the therapeutic benefits of massage with the effectiveness of micro-current therapy. The unique design of the Electro Cellulite Massager utilizes twenty four conductive rollers electrically charged with micro-current to gently knead tired shoulders, soothe aching limbs and firm sagging muscles. The rollers are designed to pivot to the body contours of each individual targeting specific problem areas. The stimulatory action of the Electro Cellulite Massager helps to break down fatty deposits, tone muscles and reduce inches. The Electro Cellulite Massager treatment gives instant lifting and contouring on the buttocks and toning of the thighs. This treatment will improve the appearance of cellulite and break down fatty deposits. It will also stimulate circulation and lymphatic drainage, which will help to flush toxins away giving a smoother and tighter, dimple free appearance. 2018 BOLSOVER BIG TIDY Bolsover Civic Society's 2018 Bolsover Big Tidy took place on Saturday 21st April and was a tremendous success, which saw numerous community groups work together, collaboratively, to clean the streets and neighbourhood parks of Bolsover and surrounding villages. 50 volunteers stormed the streets and collected a staggering 70 bags of litter - all of which made Bolsover a cleaner and tidier place to live. Huge thanks to Bolsover District Council for providing the equipment, to NAL Plant for collecting bags of waste on this town-wide project, and to Bolsover Parish Church for providing our volunteers with delicious refreshment. Thank you to Bolsover Women's Institute, Friends of New Bolsover, Carr Vale Community Association, Bolsover Scouts, Community Action Bolsover/ Bolsover Rocks, and to all the volunteers who helped on the day who aren't affiliated with a community group. On-Call Firefighters needed! We are actively recruiting for Bolsover fire station On-Call Firefighters are members of the community who are paid to respond to emergencies. They do not staff the fire station 24 hours a day. They are notified of an emergency call via a personal pager, which they carry with them when they are on duty. On-Call Firefighters will book themselves available for fire calls and, if a call comes in during the hours they have agreed to be on call, they must reach the fire station within 5 minutes of receiving the pager message, and we are after people who can offer daytime cover including weekends. www.derbys-fire.gov.uk
