JDS Installations is a Chesterfield based family business run by brothers Jamie and Darren Smith, who specialise in bathroom and wetroom installations. We are not salesman, but a caring and trustworthy company who pride ourselves on our customer’s satisfaction. We back this cliché statement up by not accepting the final 40% of the final balance until our customers are entirely happy with our workmanship. We have no expensive showroom over heads so we pass the savings directly onto our customers. We also install en-suites, cloak rooms and all aspects of porcelain & ceramic tiling. Every project we take on we put our heart and soul into it, from the initial meeting of the potential customer, the designing of the project and right through until the completion of the Installation. HYPERLOOP ONE Hyperloop One plans to cut the commute between Sweden and Finland down to 30 minutes - and it needs an estimated 19 billion Euros and 12 years to do so. The startup is considered the frontrunner in the race to take Tesla founder Elon Musk’s Hyperloop, a futuristic transportation system that shoots passenger-filled pods through tubes at a greater acceleration than the human body may be able to handle, from concept to reality.

Now the company is planning to take its technologies to Europe, where it has reached an agreement with the city of Salo to build the first 50-kilometer stretch of a Hyperloop network that will eventually link Finland and Sweden. A report from FS Links - a group dedicated to bringing Hyperloop to the Nordic region - and the KPMG accounting firm estimates it will cost 19 billion Euros to build. Hyperloop One says those 19 billion Euros will have to be invested over the 12 years it will take to build the network. First, it has to build up local Hyperloop networks in both Finland and Sweden, which will take about eight years. Then it has to connect the two with an undersea tunnel — that’ll take another four years. Only then will it be able to deliver on its promises to connect the two countries. Which raises the question: Who’s going to be willing to invest billions of Euros in a project from an unproven company working on a transportation system that was deemed not “even close to feasible” by 14

engineers who examined Musk’s plan? And for how long will they wait for a return on their investment before they simply write off all that money? “There are many private and public options at our disposal,” Hyperloop One says. “Governments at the city, regional, national and EU level may choose to fund the project or provide loan guarantees to a private entity based on the wider economic benefits FS Links can deliver in time saved, higher productivity, reduced pollution and wear-and-tear on roads.” Later, it adds that “given the size of the project, it will likely be a blend of public and private sector capital.” Of course, all of this hinges on Hyperloop One proving that it can build these networks in the first place. The company plans to demonstrate a “full-scale, high-speed test of its track, vehicle and controlled-environment tube” in early 2017. This means the earliest Sweden and Finland can be connected by a vacuum-powered transit system would be 2028 or 2029 - and that’s assuming building goes according to schedule and Hyperloop One can fund the project. WHAT TO DO IN THE GARDEN IN JULY There's always something to be doing in the garden, whether it's pruning, tidying or sowing, so we've put together our top gardening tasks for July. • Cut back faded perennial plants & keep borders tidy. • As your Penstemon flowers fade, cut them back to just above a bud to encourage more flowers. • Cutting back growth in hanging baskets can encourage new flowers and foliage and will revive the display. • Cut back hardy Geraniums and Delphiniums after the first flush of flowers to encourage new growth and further blooms. • Continue to tie in and train new growth on climbing plants. • Prune Wisteria now. Just remove the whippy sideshoots from the main branch framework to about 20cm from their base. • Prune lupins to encourage further flowers. • If you need to prune your deciduous Magnolia, now is the best time to do it. • Divide clumps of Bearded Iris now so they have time to form roots and flowers buds for next year before the cold weather arrives. • Take cuttings from your favourite tender plants for over-wintering indoors. Cuttings can also still be taken from shrubs and herbaceous perennials. • Dead-head bedding plants and perennial plants to stop them self-seeding and to encourage further flowering. • Dead-head your roses to keep them looking tidy. Leave the flowers in place if your rose produces attractive hips (seed pods). • Dead-head sweet peas regularly to keep them blooming. Water daily in dry weather. • Capture seed heads from dandelions and other weeds. Collect them before they get a chance to release their seeds and spread throughout your garden. • Keep an eye out for pests on plants, early treatment is best.

16

VEGETABLE GARDEN • Plant second cropping potatoes now to give you new potatoes for Christmas. Plant your Christmas potatoes in pots or bags which can be brought under cover before the first frosts. • Pepper plants will benefit from being potted on into progressively larger pots. • Train cucumber stems upwards instead of trailing over the ground, to make the most of the space available. Simply tie in their long stems to vertical wires or a wigwam of poles. • If you're growing aubergines pinch out the growing tip once they have 5 or 6 fruits. Pick fruits while they are young. You can expect to start harvesting in mid to late summer. • Nip off the growing tips of squash and courgette to encourage branching. • Pinch out tomato side shoots each week. Cut off any leaves growing below the lowest ripening fruit trusses to improve air circulation and prevent diseases. • Boost your tomato crop by regularly feeding them with dilute tomato fertiliser once a week. If leaves look pale and yellow feed more regularly. • Feed crops with a general purpose fertiliser. • Apply a high-potash fertiliser once fruits start to form on peppers, cucumber and tomatoes. You can use this on sunflowers too. • Harvest garlic when the tops start to bend over and yellow. To find out more about harvesting and growing garlic read our 'how-to' guide. • Pick your courgettes while they are young. Regular picking encourages more fruit. • Encourage more marrows by harvesting regularly. Marrows that form in July and August should reach a good size by autumn. Let their skins harden in the sun before cutting them later in September or October. They can be stored into winter. • Pick, dry and freeze herbs for using later in the year.

Please mention Inside Bolsover District magazine when responding to any adverts

• Resist the temptation to harvest more rhubarb stems. It allows the plant to build up reserves for next year. FRUIT GARDEN • Thin out the fruits on your fruit trees to produce good sized crops. This also helps to prevent brown rot. • Protect any developing fruits from birds and squirrels by placing netting around your plants. • If you have plants fruiting in containers, make sure you give them a high potash liquid feed to keep plants healthy and productive. • Feed lemons and other citrus fruit trees throughout summer with a special citrus fertiliser. • Treat apple scab with a fungicide. Always read the manufacurers label to check the suitability for use on edible crops. • Check the leaves of gooseberry bushes for sawfly larvae, which can completely strip the foliage in a matter of days. Jet them off with water or pick them off by hand. • Peg down runners on your strawberry plants to create more plants for next year. If you don't need more plants simply remove the strawberry runners completely. • Maximise your fig crop by pinching out the tips of sideshoots after they have developed five leaves. • Prune your plum, apricot, peach and cherry trees now. Pruning these species in the summer reduces the risk of these trees getting silver leaf disease.

IN THE GREENHOUSE • Check plants daily. Water first thing in the morning or in the evening to reduce water loss through evaporation. • Harden off and plant out any plug plants that you have been growing on. • Damp down your greenhouse on hot days to increase humidity and deter red spider mites. • Open vents and doors daily to provide adequate ventilation. • Use blinds or apply shade paint to prevent the greenhouse from over-heating in sunny weather. • Try hanging sticky traps to catch flying pests and help determine which pest control is needed. • Tidy up fallen leaves and flowers to discourage the spread of fungal disease.

GARDENING TIP Prevent slugs attacking your young plants by using nemaslug. For container plants try using copper tape.

Rather than encouraging you to totally redecorate, our round-up of interiors trends is all about giving you inspiration, whether you want to buy something as small as a new throw or are looking to try a completely new colour scheme. Either way, summer 2017’s interiors trends are smoking hot!

SHADOW PLAY From hypnotically realistic digital prints to a more stylised sense of light and dark created by relief surfaces, shadows feature in many of this season’s fabric collections. BEAUTIFUL TEXTURES This season, pattern and bright colour are making room for a host of pleasing textures with a soft drapable quality. Gentle tones bring further sophistication to these offerings.

THE NEW WOOD The natural wood tones of recent seasons are starting to be replaced by wood furniture and accessories with an intriguing charred appearance. This technique shows off the wood’s enhanced grain to dramatic sculptural effect. BOTANICAL PRINTS A sense of 1950s playfulness accompanies the new tropical prints in which historical garden-design documents and Paul Gauguin-esque scenes combine to exhilarating effect. DREAM WEAVES Beautiful basket weaves are a standout feature in the latest furniture designs. This stylish lounge chair epitomises the new rustic chic by combining delicate rattan pattern with a clean silhouette and understated fabric in a soft, powdery shade. ANYTHING GOES In bold contrast to the understated, this scheme reveals the design world’s wild side. An arresting mix of leopard prints, pleating and patchworks, together with stars, stripes and metallic hides, demonstrates that more can be more. DENIM BLUE The latest tactile weaves, lively prints and wallcoverings in indigo denim blue hues make it simple to build a relaxed, yet saturated scheme. Layering patterns and plains works particularly well in a rich palette such as this. HOT METAL Metallic finishes have become a staple trend in recent years, but now interest is turning towards subtle variations of tone and texture. 20

DREAMY SCHEMES Embracing a combination of soft, diaphanous patterns and light touches of pearlescence, this barely there palette takes on the ethereal quality of a hazy early morning light. PINK & MINT Gentle blush tones continue to delight, but this time they are paired with the calm yet fresh shades of soft mint green on all manner of materials, from paper and fabric to ceramics and glass. TRANSLUCENT MATERIALS Finely patterned sheers with a diaphanous quality are emerging as favourites for use in light-filled interiors, thanks to their extra-wide widths. KEEPING AND CARING FOR RABBITS Did you know that Rabbits are now the third most popular pet in the UK? It’s true, right after Cats and Dogs, rabbits are keeping us company over all the other pets which help occupy our homes. So understanding these fluff bums and learning how to look after them properly is extremely important.

Like all pets, doing full research before you buy is highly advisable and the same rule applies to bunnies. Rabbits are intelligent animals and if looked after correctly can live in excess of 12 healthy years. SHOULD I GET MY RABBIT A FRIEND? Rabbits are naturally very social animals, they are inquisitive and playful and enjoy interacting with other rabbits, and many enjoy interacting with people; in the wild they live within a loosely organised society in underground tunnels called a warren. Groups can vary in numbers from less than ten, to hundreds of individuals! Rabbits left alone with lack of company can become depressed and ill. Ideally, pet rabbits should either be kept with a same sex litter mate or a neutered rabbit of the opposite sex. If keeping a group, all rabbits must be neutered. Rabbits can be territorial so introductions must be slow and supervised, unfamiliar rabbits can become stressed and aggressive. Week old rabbits should be held daily to ensure that they become used to the environment and become confident adults. It is still very important that they have a friend in another rabbit whom they get along with. Be sure to hold your bunnies with care and when when picking them up and not acting like a predator by luring over them, kneel down and pick them up gently. Rabbits should never be picked up by the ears or scruff of the neck.

24

RABBIT HUTCHES Two rabbits should be housed in nothing smaller than a 5ft hutch or a two tier 4ft hutch. Pets Corner sell Great & Small hutches which are perfect to these requirements. The G&S Double Hutch, Jumbo Hutch and Mega Hutch are all ideal and are extremely good quality; one small rabbit can be housed in a minimum of a 4ft hutch. A good hutch provides shelter, warmth and shade. It should be placed in a draught free position, out of direct sunlight; don’t position west or south facing as wind and rain can blow into the hutch. It is safer to position the hutch near to the house, against a wall in a sheltered area, so a closer eye can be kept on the rabbits; this can also prevent unwanted animals from trying to attack them. When it gets particularly cold, it’s good to consider moving your rabbits’ home somewhere warmer such as a shed, unused garage or outhouse. RABBIT RUNS Rabbits need lots of exercise, ideally they should have access to a large run (or a rabbit proofed room in your house if you have a house bunny) every day, the minimum should be at least once per week. You must provide water, food and shade and shelter from the sun in the run, a tunnel or tube is a great idea. Great & Small Runs are recommended, they come in both wood and metal designs; run extensions for run and huches and hutches are also available. Be sure that the run is secure from predators and that it is ideally on grass so that they can enjoy their natural luxuries. WHAT SHOULD I FEED MY RABBIT? Wild rabbits spend 70% of their time above ground foraging for high fibre food like grass, hay and foliage. Foraging keeps rabbits busy, stimulated and well exercised, it also helps to grind down their teeth (which grow continuously). Providing rabbits with the correct diet is absolutely essential. The majority of a rabbit’s diet should be high quality hay or grass (grass must be introduced to a rabbit very gradually so as not to upset their stomach). Hay must be available at all times. In addition to hay, rabbits should be offered a variety of vegetables daily – greens like Kale, Savoy Cabbage and Spinach are good examples; avoid feeding too much fruit as it is high in natural sugar. Remember rabbits would naturally eat a very fibrous diet, low in sugar and rich food stuffs. Complete Rabbit food comes in two varities; muesli – which is a mixture and nuggets. If the rabbit selective feeds when eating the muesli then it would be wise to use a nugget to ensure they are getting the full nutritional requirements from the food. Example of muesli; Great and Small Rabbit with Grass and an example of pellet; Excel Rabbit. Do not overfeed dry food, it should only be a supplement to the hay and greens. Young rabbits have weaker stomach acid than adults and need to be introduced to fresh food and grass very gradually. Begin by only feeding veg’ twice weekly in small amounts, and only allow them to graze on grass for five minutes at a time, then gradually increase.

KEEPING RABBITS HEALTHY Prevention is always better than cure, I’m sure you’ll agree. Keeping your rabbits in a healthy condition and being of aware what could occur can cut your vet bills and more importantly keep your rabbit hopping with joy. However, If you have any health concerns you must seek veterinary advice. RABBIT BEHAVIOUR First and foremost, rabbits are prey animals. Pet rabbits’ biology and behaviour are very similar to their wild counterpart, so understanding their needs will lead to a contented pet. To maintain a happy healthy rabbit you must provide an interesting, stable environment and an opportunity to exercise and interact regularly. Remember that wild rabbits have a territory equivalent to around 30 tennis courts to explore, and plenty of rabbit friends! If a rabbit is not given enough stimulation, behavioural problems can develop including: depression, fur plucking, aggression, chewing bars, altered feeding, drinking or toileting habits, sitting hunched, excessive hiding, reluctance to move and repeated circling of their enclosure. Always handle rabbits gently and talk to them in a calm quiet voice. Rabbits become stressed very easily so always supervise children when handling the rabbit. Rabbits all have their own personality; an important part of pet ownership is getting to know your pet’s individual style, so that you can learn to recognise if anything changes, or if there’s a problem. HELPFUL RABBIT TIPS Always provide your rabbit with somewhere to hide Allow your rabbit to exercise out of the hutch and cage as regularly as possible Spend plenty of time with your rabbit, they are extremely intelligent and can even be clicker trained! The more time spent with your rabbit, the friendlier he/she will become Provide Toys (Jingle Balls, Crispy Corn, Treat Balls etc.) Vary them and keep them interesting Provide tunnels, large enough for the rabbit to fit through Provide Gnaws, safe twigs and wicker Rabbits love to dig, a planter with compost will be thoroughly enjoyed Cardboard boxes filled with hay will provide great entertainment

1.

How did you form the idea to create a homely, classy eatery with a vibrant edge? The plot became available which prompted myself and my wife to have a think about what would best fit the town, we wanted to try something a little different but didn’t want to go too far with our ideas. We knew we wanted to incorporate homemade cooking and cakes but also hold a license for alcohol. We then formed The Pump which utilises both a day and night atmosphere.

2.

Did you have any inspiration for the variety of cocktails you provide? Yes! My brother, Dominic attended a cocktail masterclass before we opened, we did a little market research and tried some of the many he was taught. As there are so many we enjoy experimenting with them. Dominic also does special cocktails on a weekly basis which are advertised on the Facebook page and they can be found on the specials board.

keeps enthusiasm and forms something which we are all proud of.

4.

Do you have any specials currently available or upcoming? We like to keep things fresh so will always have new specials available, to keep up to date with these visit our Facebook page or simply come and ask any of us in the tea room. We do speciality Night’s, usually on a Friday and we also offer Afternoon Tea every day from 12pm – 4pm. Sunday Lunch is served from 12pm -3pm each Sunday.

5.

Your cakes are amazing! Do you have a favourite? Heather creates fantastic cakes for The Pump. We have all different kinds of cheesecake, my favourite being her salted caramel flavour, but I do have to say her specialty is the roulade which is very popular amongst visitors.

3.

You are rated 5 stars, not only for hygiene but also for hospitality, how do you maintain this status? Hygiene and customer service are key points which are very important to all of us at The Pump. All staff have high standards and take pride in their work, they join as a team to ensure the best quality customer service. Our reviews and feedback reflect this which

BOLSOVERDRAMAGROUP.ORG CASTLE STREET MEDICAL CENTRE PPG As a PPG we are quite rightly proud of the CSMC standing within the Hardwick CCG, especially with regard to appointments. Unfortunately, we have recently been the subject of some angry comments from some patients who have been unable to get an appointment. To this end, we have asked the practice why this is happening. The response from DCHS is that since April we have lost the services of the two ST3 Registrars and therefor left us just with our core GPs. This of course meant that we lost a great deal of flexibility with being able to manage appointments. DCHS are trying to rectify this and we could well have a GP starting within the next 8-10 weeks. On top of that, it could be that we will have the services of a Pharmacist, to support our GPs. The Pharmacist will be able to assist with medication reviews, prescription queries, INR clinics etc. By us having this extra service, it should allow our doctors to concentrate on their high level of clinical work. Today, I have received some very disturbing information from our Practice Manager. The practice is currently suffering from a large number of DNAs ( did not attend for an appointment). Given what I have written above, this is another reason why we are losing capacity for patients who cannot get an appointment. I will now present the 42

lost capacity due to DNAs, it is not easy reading. HCA / Phlebotomy hours lost Nurse appointments GP

5hours 10 mins 10 hours 32 mins 10 hours 10 mins

From that information it is easy to see that we have a major problem. To try and help with this, the practice is going to implement TEXT message reminders. Hopefully this will stop the DNAs, or at least make the situation better. The PPG are fully behind the proposed implementation of texting, and any other method of trying to cut down on DNAs. Some GP practices have a policy of THREE strikes and you are out. If someone DNAs, they are asked why. If they can't give a satisfactory answer, they receive a warning. If the patient continues to DNA,they receive a second warning. Eventually this could lead to the patient being removed from the practice. I have also heard of practices actually FINING patients who DNA in the region of £50, to cover for lost GP time. I hope that this message goes someway to answer the questions about appointments, and at least it shows that the PPG do listen to, and support our patients. We try our best to get answers to any issue that is brought to our attention. GRANT STOTHARD, CHAIR OF CSMC PPG

WATERPROOFS, BROLLIES, ICE CREAM AND SUN GLASSES! We can’t have been the only Morris dancing team who were anxiously looking at the weather forecast in the last couple of days… Perhaps Sky would have a more positive one than the BBC? On the morning of the 1st May, drawing back the curtains and peering out of the window, it didn’t look too bad, dull, but fine. However by the time breakfast was over and it was time to set off -you’ve guessed it, it was raining. A wet journey then to our first dance spot of the May Day tour at the Dukeries garden centre, at Welbeck, Nottinghamshire . Off the coach, on with macs and up with brollies. As we walked to the allocated dancing site, the rain petered out and the clouds began to lift. Brollies down and macs off. They do say the sun shines on the righteous… Our second new member made her debut in the first dance of the morning, dancing Guisburn extremely well. After dancing in turn with Harthill Morris we travelled to our lunch spot in glorious sunshine. A walk along the river and a quick dance from both sides and off again to Thoresby Hall, near Ollerton.

We danced in a very warm courtyard at the hall to an appreciative crowd. Six of the team danced “Mill Race”, a dance we had found very difficult to learn. The first time we danced it out, we got into a terrible muddle. Practice makes perfect and it went off without a hitch. Phew! It was lovely to see some retired members come to watch us. The non dancers enjoyed a little retail therapy or a look round the museum and most of us cooled off at the end of the spot with a welcome ice cream. Our final dance spot of the day was at Clumber Park. The wonderful sunshine had obviously brought out the crowds and we had a large audience watching us dance. Although our legs were tiring we did our best with smiles on our faces and knees high. The last dance of the day was an open invitation for audience and all team members to join in with “Bonnie Green”. There were so many from the audience participating that they more than outnumbered the teams. A great day out in lovely weather, lots of dancing, lively music, laughter and enjoyment. What more can one ask?

The above meeting was held with 13 members present and 4 apologies. Our Practice Manager, Tracey Siggsworth, gave her apologies because she was working hard to try and defeat the computer virus that hit the NHS. ( Tracey rang me early on the next day to say that everything was back to normal). From the previous meeting, I reported that due to severe FINANCIAL PRESSURES, it could be that CCGs may have to share some of the work and services. We will have to wait THREE months for the report on the PROCEEDURES of LIMITED CLINICAL VALUE, currently being carried out at the Bolsover Hospital. I was able to inform the group, that only 13 practices in Derbyshire appeared unaffected by the Ransomware virus, and that as far as could be certain, there were no breaches of Patient Related Data. In the Chair report, I gave details from the latest HCCG Network meeting. Tanya Nolan gave a report on the work carried out by HEALTHWATCH DERBYSHIRE. The group, set up in 2013, look at reports of poor service in the health service. There is a SPEAK OUT FORM, on which we can report concerns, and suggestions for improvements and even pass on compliments of good service. These forms are available at your practice, or by telephone on 01773880786, or look on their website,www.healthwatchderbyshire.co.uk where you can find all the relevant information. At present they are training patients who have LEARNING DISSABILITIES, to be Inspectors, who can then visit Care Homes where patients with similar disabilities are residents. Like our PPG, they are trying to engage with YOUNG CARERES. There was then a presentation by Hannah Montague from solicitors Taylor & Emmet. Hannah informed us of the benefits of having a WILL, and the problems that may arise from not having one. A WILL should be reviewed at least every FIVE years. This is because of changes, that may have been made to the Financial Services Regulations. Hannah then outlined what a Power of Attorney is, and what an Attorney can do. If anyone wishes to discuss these services, they can contact Hannah on 01142184342, or e-mail Hannah.montague@ tayloremmet.co.uk There are moves afoot in the NHS to try and cut the costs of PRESCRIPTIONS by informing patients, that in some cases it is cheaper to buy medication over the counter at pharmacists. For instance, Paracetamol may only cost 19p over the counter, whereas by prescription, it could cost the NHS £40. Taking the cost of a visit to the GP into account. Derbyshire CCGs spent £3m, in 2015/16 on medication that could have been bought over the counter. If we have a cough or cold, it is easier to ask your Pharmacist for advice. Finally, there is a Guide to Living with Long Term Conditions available for patients suffering in this way. Our GP Dr Carberry has cooperated in the writing of this guide. Our next meeting is on 17 July at 6,30pm.
