NOVEMBER EDITION OF INSIDE BOLSOVER DISTRICT 8,000 magazines delivered FREE to homes and businesses in Bolsover and surrounding areas!

With the centenary commemorations of the First World War just past in 2014, a growing number of people dug out their grandparents’ and great grandparents’ war medals and letters from the Western Front to display and preserve for future generations of their family.

“If you simply want to put your ancestor’s medals in a frame, don’t come to us! We don’t do ordinary, there are enough people out there doing ordinary framing! We pride ourselves on doing the extraordinary. The reason is, medals deserve respect and reverence. Each one can tell an extraordinary story about an individual and remarkably, these stories are often unknown to the families until our team get to look at them more closely.” We are able to provide people with very detailed information about their ancestors which not only provides provenance for their medals, it also recalls an often long forgotten ancestor and adds to the customer’s knowledge of their own family history. It can also recall a turbulent period in history that helped shape a family’s future. We work closely with an experienced genealogist and military historian who has carried out research for several episodes of the BBC’s TV Programme ‘Who Do You Think You Are?’ so we have a very knowledgable expert who knows exactly what he is looking at and knows where he can find the relevant information, often including the medal recipient’s personal service records.

That is a small example of the kind of service that our customers can benefit from when they come to In2Frames to get those old war medals framed. This attention to detail to provide the customer with a service that is much more than they imagined was ever possible from a framing shop is just second nature to us and permeates through every aspect of our business.

It is in Staveley, near Chesterfield, North Derbyshire where you can find the family run picture framing business, In2Frames, which is owned by Alwynn Morris and his wife Lisa. Founded in 1993 In2Frames has risen to become the premier picture framing shop in the Derbyshire, Yorkshire and Nottinghamshire areas.

Alwynn has been interested in photography from an early age -the wedding and portrait photography part of the business quickly grew and the couple often photographed over 50 weddings each year. With photography came regular requests for picture frames - and the rest is history! At In2Frames the customer is special and Alwynn & Lisa can often spend 45 minutes or more chatting with a single customer, discussing what the customer wants and offering a friendly, personal service and advice.

“What we attempt to do” said Alwynn, “is to create something that is unique, individual and special for every customer that comes to see us. If someone can take the time to come and see us, we will take the time, no matter how long, to talk to them about what they want. As we don’t advertise, people usually come to us through personal recommendations, so we are mindful that every new customer who comes to see us may be a friend of one of our existing customers so you will always receive a warm welcome when you visit us. We will endeavour to ensure that you leave 100% happy and return again as a friend!” In2Frames can put virtually anything into a picture frame - specialising in sporting memorabilia, military memorabilia and medals, personal and family memorabilia, they've even recently framed an olympic torch!

Remembrance Sunday, which falls on 13 November in 2016, is a day for the nation to remember and honour those who have sacrificed themselves to secure and protect our freedom. The National Service of Remembrance, held at local Cenotaphs around the country on Remembrance Sunday, ensures that no-one is forgotten as the nation unites to honour all who have suffered or died in war. HISTORY OF THE POPPY Early poppyDuring the First World War (1914–1918) much of the fighting took place in Western Europe. Previously beautiful countryside was blasted, bombed and fought over, again and again. The landscape swiftly turned to fields of mud: bleak and barren scenes where little or nothing could grow. Bright red Flanders poppies (Papaver rhoeas) however, were delicate but resilient flowers and grew in their thousands, flourishing even in the middle of chaos and destruction. In early May 1915, shortly after losing aABOUT friend in Ypres,GUY a Canadian doctor, 10 FACTS Lt Col John McCrae was inspired by the sight of poppies FAWKES, FIREWORKS AND to write a now famous poem called ‘In Flanders WHY WE REMEMBER THEFields’.

Practical Car and Van Rental Chesterfield was proud to supporting Karl with a fundraising bike ride from Skegness to Chesterfield in aid to raise funds for Lilia to afford expensive Therapy. Lilia was born without a heartbeat. After being resuscitated for 10 minutes she came back from the dead, her determination being a sign of things to come. Lilia has been deprived of oxygen for at least 10 minutes and was pronounced HIE Grade 2. She began to miss milestones from a early age and was diagnosed with quadriplegic cerebral palsy at 5 month old. This means she is unable to sit, crawl or walk independently. Intensive therapy could help her development and independence for the future. Lilia loves to be around her friends and cousins and wants desperately to join in. Her parents are committed to her having as many experiences as possible, and not missing out on anything due to her condition. Lilia would benefit from a new therapy called 'Therasuit' therapy. This is a 3 week course of daily 4 hour therapy while wearing a space suit, as well as having oxygen therapy to help heal the brain. This will cost in the region of £10,000 for one 3 week session. Lilia had her first 3 week 'Therasuit' therapy session in Feb 2016. This therapy we hope to do every year and we really do appreciate your kind donations. Please donate to help Lilia afford her therapy, You can do so online on crowdfunding.justgiving.com/ karl-johnson or call into Practical Car and Van Rental Chesterfield.

Remembrance Sunday NOVEMBER 13 REMEMBRANCE SUNDAY

In early May 1915, shortly after losing a friend in Ypres, a Canadian doctor, Lt Col John McCrae was inspired by the sight of poppies to write a now famous poem called ‘In Flanders Fields’. McCrae’s poem inspired an American academic, Moina Michael, to make and sell red silk poppies which were brought to England by a French woman, Anna Guérin. The (Royal) British Legion, formed in 1921, ordered 9 million of these poppies and sold them on 11 November that year. The poppies sold out almost immediately and that first ever ‘Poppy Appeal’ raised over £106,000; a considerable amount of money at the time. This was used to help WW1 veterans with

employment and housing. Haig Fund Poppy. The following year, Major George Howson set up the Poppy Factory to employ disabled ex-Servicemen. Today, the factory and the Legion’s warehouse in Aylesford produces millions of poppies each year. The demand for poppies in England was so high that few were reaching Scotland. Earl Haig’s wife established the ‘Lady Haig Poppy Factory’ in Edinburgh in 1926 to produce poppies exclusively for Scotland. Over 5 million Scottish poppies (which have four petals and no leaf unlike poppies in the rest of the UK) are still made by hand by disabled ex-Servicemen at Lady Haig’s Poppy Factory each year and distributed by our sister charity Poppyscotland.

TWO MINUTE SILENCE Each year at the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month, we observe a Two Minute Silence. Armistice Day on 11 November marks the end of the First World War and is a day to remember and honour those who have paid the price for our freedom.

‘In Flanders Fields’ In Flanders’ fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place: and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie In Flanders’ fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe; To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high, If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders’ Fields.

COMPUTER SAFETY SOCIAL MEDIA RULES 5 Golden rules for social media users

1. Don’t feed the trolls Internet trolls are provocateurs who join discussions to irritate other people for particular kind of “fun.” You can find trolls everywhere: on forums, chats, and any other platforms for online communication. News media comment areas are known for having high troll participation. For sure, there are bunches of them on social networks. How should you speak to trolls? Don’t! Just ignore them. Many people take the bait and start hot debates trying to explain their point of view and spend a great deal of time and effort in vain. Someone is always wrong on the Internet - don’t waste your time and energy on trolls. 2. Don’t post or repost anything illegal The United Arab Emirates and New Zealand have laws that strictly punish trolling and cyberbullying with penalties ranging from a $35,000 fine to imprisonment. Nevertheless, you can be fined or face even more serious consequences for posts, reposts, and other actions on social media in most countries. For example, two men were given a four-year jail sentence after they created a Facebook event encouraging a riot. A man in Bangladesh was sentenced to jail for joking about his desire for the prime minister to die. So you’d better know the laws in your country and remember them when posting or reposting something on Facebook or Twitter.

16

3. Don’t repost scams Scammers often trick victims with shocking stories about dying babies, drowning puppies, or struggling veterans. Such posts travel around social networks disguised as calls for help. In fact they are used for financial theft, phishing, and spreading malware. Such messages generate a lot of reposts, but a large proportion of them are scams. Real calls for help are usually created by your family, friends, and friends of your friends. Giveaways are organized on official pages of companies, not individual strangers. That’s why it’s better to be vigilant and do a check on each post before clicking its “Like” or “Share” buttons. 4. Think of readers’ reactions You probably have colleagues, superiors, and clients among your Facebook or Instagram connections. When you apply for a new work position, for example, human resources will likely check your social media profiles. Consider what you want them to see and more to the point, what you don’t want them to see. You should also consider carefully what you post on pages of other people and of public-facing accounts such as corporations or universities. 5. Don’t make your private data public Many social networks offer to “check in” the location of where you took a photo or posted something, or display the places you’ve visited. If you are interested in an event, the social network can notify your friends in case they want to tag along. By default anybody can access that data, and criminals have a thousand and one methods to use it, from breaking into your house to stealing your digital identity. That’s why we highly recommend you hide this kind of data from strangers with the help of Facebook privacy settings. It’s also a good reason not to add to your friend list indiscriminately: The people sending requests to connect with you can be bots, trolls, or even criminals. Even if Facebook informs you that you two have dozens of mutual friends, don’t befriend other people until you are sure that they are real acquaintances.

Fireworks in the UK NOVEMBER 5 10 FACTS ABOUT GUY FAWKES, FIREWORKS AND WHY WE REMEMBER THE GUNPOWDER PLOT ON NOVEMBER 5 Remember! Remember ! The fifth of November ... the day known as Guy Fawkes Night, Bonfire Night and Firework Night. It is an annual celebration observed on November 5 for more than 400 years following the Gunpowder Plot of 1605 when 13 conspirators planned to blow up Parliament and kill King James I. Fawkes was arrested while guarding explosives the plotters had placed beneath the House of Lords. People in London lit bonfires to celebrate the failure of the plot, and an act of Parliament was passed to appoint the date as a day of thanksgiving for the “joyful deliverance of James I”. This act remained in force for 254 years, until 1859.

5. Fireworks were invented when a Chinese cook accidentally discovered how to make explosive black powder - the early origin of gunpowder - during the 10th century. The cook accidentally mixed three common kitchen ingredients - potassium nitrate or saltpetre (a salt substitute used in the curing of meat), sulphur and charcoal and set light to the concoction. The result was colourful flames. The cook also noticed that if the mixture was burned when enclosed in the hollow of a bamboo shoot, there was a tremendous explosion.

To mark the occasion, here are 10 facts about Guy Fawkes, gunpowder and fireworks:

6. Fireworks arrived in Europe in the 14th century and were first produced by the Italians. The first recorded display was in Florence. The first recorded fireworks in England were at the wedding of King Henry VII in 1486.

1. Political protesters sometimes wear Guy Fawkes masks to protect their identity. You might recognize these masks if you’ve seen the film V for Vendetta, which is very loosely based on the story of Guy Fawkes.

7. Dummies have been burned on bonfires since as long ago as the 13th century, initially to drive away evil spirits. Following the gunpowder plot of 1605, the focus of the sacrifices switched to Guy Fawkes’ treason. 8. It is said that the word ‘guy’ actually comes from the name Guy Fawkes. It originally meant “an ugly, repulsive person” but, throughout the years, simply became a synonym for “man”.

2. The only place in the UK that does not celebrate Guy Fawkes Night is St. Peter’s School in York. Guy Fawkes went there as a boy and they refuse to burn his image in respect for their former pupil.

9. One suggested origin for the word ‘bonfire’ is that derives from ‘bone-fire’, and comes from a time when the bodies of witches, heretics and other misfits were burned instead of being buried in holy ground.

3. Guy Fawkes wasn’t the main conspirator in the Gunpowder Plot, but he had one of the most important roles. He guarded the gunpowder underneath the Houses of Parliament, and had he not been caught, he would have been charged with lighting it.

10. The Houses of Parliament are still searched by the Yeomen of the Guard before the state opening which has been held in November since 1928. The idea is to ensure no modern-day Guy Fawkes is concealed in the cellars.

4. Physicists from the Institute of Physics have calculated that the 2,500kg of gunpowder Fawkes hid would have wreaked damage almost 500 metres from the centre of the explosion.

MOTORING REVIEW NOVEMBER

SUZUKI VITARA REVIEW Smaller than its predecessor, the latest Vitara is a rival for the Renault Captur, and is available with four-wheel drive to back up its rugged looks he latest Suzuki Vitara is a more compact offering than its predecessor, closer in size to the Nissan Juke and Renault Captur than a fullsize SUV. Unlike its closest rivals, however, it is also available with four-wheel drive. The engine line-up is limited to a 1.6-litre petrol and a 1.6-litre diesel, with the former the cheaper of the two; it comes with a five-speed manual gearbox, whereas the diesel gets a sixspeed unit. An automatic is only available for the petrol model.

Space 8/10 A good family car So long as you avoid the panoramic sunroof, the Suzuki Vitara offers enough space for a couple of tall adults to fit in the back seats without feeling cramped. But as with most cars of this type, there is a small lump in the floor that anybody in the middle seat will need to straddle. The boot is slightly bigger than a Nissan Juke’s. And while it’s smaller than a Renault Captur’s, it will still swallow a baby buggy without any trouble. There’s also an adjustable boot floor that lets you raise the load level and create a completely flat space when

28

the rear seats are folded. There’s no shortage of storage space in the passenger compartment, where the big glovebox is complemented by an assortment of handy cupholders and storage trays.

Comfort 7/10 Engines can be a bit noisy Neither engine is particularly quiet, but nor are the noises they make particularly unpleasant. At motorway speeds the diesel is the smoother and quieter of the pair, although there’s still a fair bit of road and wind noise to contend with. The ride is firm but well controlled, just as it should be in a tall vehicle such as this, so while you will feel bumps in the road they rarely unsettle the car. Plenty of adjustment in the seat and steering wheel means you shouldn’t have a problem finding a comfortable driving position. Easy to drive 7/10 Diesel engine has welcome extra pulling power The Vitara’s driving position isn’t particularly elevated by the standards of 4x4s, but you still get a good forward view. And while there are blind spots over your shoulders, they are not nearly as bad as in many other cars of this type. Light steering and a precise gearshift add to the Suzuki’s urban appeal, although it can feel rather wide when parking. Also, that steering is a bit too sensitive just off-centre, meaning that for motorway driving you tend to have to make frequent corrections. Overtaking is much easier in the diesel than it is in the petrol, on account of its greater

mid-range torque. However, even the petrol version has enough power to keep up with traffic as long as you’re prepared to change down a gear of two when the terrain becomes hilly. A four-wheel drive system is available, but only on more expensive versions of the Vitara. Reliability 5/10 Suzuki didn’t perform well in 2014 customer satisfaction survey Suzuki performed poorly in the 2014 JD Power customer satisfaction survey, finishing 23rd out of 26 manufacturers, although it should be noted that only one model, the Swift, was included. Like the Nissan Juke, the Vitara is covered by a three-year, 60,000-mile warranty, but this falls short of the four years Renault offers on the Captur. Affordability 7/10 Better to stick with lower spec models Unlike the rival Nissan Juke and Renault Captur, you can’t have a Suzuki Vitara that offers sub- 100g/ km CO2 emissions, so it’s not as cheap to tax - although insurance costs are comparable. What is slightly odd is that, aside from the base model, the Vitara is priced almost directly in line with the slightly bigger, if not quite as well specified, Suzuki S-Cross, and uses the same engines, making the latter look conspicuously good value. And if you’re about to spend enough to get a diesel model with four-wheel drive, you should pause and also look at the bigger, classier Skoda Yeti or Nissan Qashqai.

Holiday Review

Christmas Markets

Germany or Italy? Strasbourg or Norway? The festive season might feel a long way off, but the season of Christmas markets will be here before you know it. Large or small, each market reflects the culture of the region - food, drink, music and more.

INNSBRUCK

November 15 2016 - January 6 2017 Of the half-a-dozen markets in Innsbruck, the most romantic is in the Altstadt, lined with medieval houses. Stalls are piled high with gingerbread, wooden toys and delicate ornaments made of handblown glass. At dusk, trumpeters play carols on the 500-year-old Golden Roof. Try the kiachln – Advent doughnuts – served hot, with cranberry sauce. At weekends, ride the funicular up Nordkette mountain to Hungerburg. After tasty treats at this little market, continue your journey to the top of the Hafelekar for views of twinkling city lights and snow-tipped peaks.

GERMANY - HAMBURG

November 21 - December 23 2016 For sheer diversity, Hamburg is hard to beat. In this historic port, 15 different markets cater to all tastes. Traditionalists head for the square in front of the grandiose city hall, where the rows of stalls are themed, from sweet treats (cakes, chocolates and more) to crafts (leather, silver, tree ornaments). Children are entranced by the Spielzeuggasse, the Toy Street, which is full of playthings from around the world. Romantics opt for the Jungfernstieg market, whose focus is on posh food and gifts; while crowd-avoiders choose the smaller Fleetinsel market by the water, where fairy lights twinkle on antique sailing boats. Strictly for over-18s is the risqué Santa Pauli market on the X-rated Reeperbahn.

STRASBOURG

November 25 - December 31 2016 Year round, Strasbourg scores for traditional charm, but during Advent the capital of Alsace is even more magical. Half-timbered houses sport giant red-and-white hearts; stars, angels and snowflakes garland the cobbled streets. Here, the Christkindelsmärik dates back to 1570 and even the towering fir tree on the Place Kléber is a 400-year-old custom. Check out the 11 different “villages” – themed areas – and don’t miss the bredele biscuits, a local speciality. These special biscuits come in all shapes and flavours, from hazelnut, orange and cinnamon to walnut, coconut and praline. Take them home. Hang them on your tree... Then eat them.

STUTTGART

2016 dates TBC Dating back to 1692, the Stuttgarter Weihnachtsmarkt is one of Germany’s best-known pre-Christmas jamborees. In the car-free, old heart of this compact city, the air is scented with spiced wine and boughs of fresh pine. From the Schlossplatz to the Marktplatz, some 300 stalls snake along the cobbled streets; decked out with bright ornaments and sparkling lights, they compete for the coveted title of “best decorated”.

COLOGNE

November 21 - December 23 2016 Cologne has not one but seven Christmas markets. Head to the Old Town’s cobbled Alter Markt and Cathedral markets for candles, tree decorations and handmade lacework. The fairy-tale St Nick’s Village on Rudolfplatz is good for wooden toys, and locals’ favourite Neumarkt’s Angel’s Market for Dresden Stollen cake. Among the trees of the Stadtgarten is a more leftfield market selling Mongolian slippers, jewellery and dozens of different honeys. It’s a peaceful spot to sit with a mug of glühwein.

ITALY - BOLOGNA

November 20 2016 - January 6 2017 Forget “Merry Christmas” – in Bologna, “Buon Natale” is the greeting you hear in the seasonal markets. Spreading alongside the 12th-century San Pietro Cathedral is the Fiera di Natale, while the smaller Antica Fiera di Santa Lucia centres on the cloister of the Santa Maria dei Servi church. Bologna is synonymous with good food. Mouthwatering creations are everywhere, from marzipan fruits and citrus peel dipped in dark chocolate, to torrone – a festive-season nougat made with nuts and honey.

SWEDEN - STOCKHOLM

November 23 - December 23 2016 Although the first Christmas market on Stortorget square in Old Stockholm was held 500 years ago, the modern event dates back “only” a century. In front of the Nobel Museum, close to the Royal Palace, the cheerful stalls are filled with crafts made only in Sweden, such as glass, pottery and jewellery. Prices are surprisingly affordable. Grown-ups sip glögg (mulled wine) and everyone munches pepparkakor – thin ginger biscuits. With a dusting of snow, it all looks like a Christmas card, Scandinavian-style. Be sure to bring home a taste of Sweden: saffransbullar (saffron buns) and vacuum-packed sausages made of – don’t tell the children – reindeer meat.

NORWAY - TRONDHEIM

CZECH REPUBLIC - PRAGUE

Refuel with moose burgers, waffles with blueberries, and tankards of mulled wine around open fires in the lavvos. Don’t miss a walk across Gamle Bybro (Old Town Bridge) to the brightly-painted timber houses of Bakklandet, the city’s former working-class district.

Eat klobasa (Polish sausage) or trdelnik, a hot, sugarcoated pastry. Catch an evening concert in one of the city’s churches, such as St Salvator, St Clement’s Cathedral or St George’s Basilica.

2016 dates TBC Should you find yourself in this Arctic city make a beeline for Torvet, the main square, where you’ll find clusters of wooden chalets and traditional Sami lavvos (tepee-style tents). Burning braziers and horse-and-sleigh rides add to the charm. Buy hand-woven scarves and ceramic wine goblets, berry-flavoured cheeses and dried reindeer meat.

December 3 2016 - January 4 2017 Prague’s Old Town Square, Staromestske namesti, has a stage-set nativity scene, a huge tree and daily performances by folk bands and choirs. Comb the stalls – both here and in neighbouring Wenceslas Square – for carved wooden toys, Bohemian crystal, garnet jewellery and traditional straw and maize decorations.

SWITZERLAND - ST GALLEN

November 24 - December 24 2016 Only an hour from Zurich, St Gallen ticks all the festive boxes: a Baroque cathedral, wonderfully ornate Medieval buildings, and picture-postcard views of snow-covered mountains. Kicking off the Advent fun is the lighting of Switzerland’s tallest Christmas tree, accompanied by carol singing. Look out for biberli. Typical of St Gallen, these ginger bread/marzipan concoctions come in different shapes, have different decorations, and are always delicious.

BELGIUM - BRUGES

November 18 2016 - January 1 2017 The main stalls in Bruges are found in Market Square, overlooked by the 13th-century Belfort (belfry), and in Simon Stevinplein. There are plenty of places to buy handmade jewellery, wooden toys, hats and scarves, leather goods and, of course, chocolates. Don’t miss the local beer at Staminee de Garre, a cosy tavern in De Garre, a narrow alley off Breidelstraat.

On-Call Firefighters needed! We are actively recruiting for Bolsover fire station On-Call Firefighters are members of the community who are paid to respond to emergencies. They do not staff the fire station 24 hours a day. They are notified of an emergency call via a personal pager, which they carry with them when they are on duty. On-Call Firefighters will book themselves available for fire calls and, if a call comes in during the hours they have agreed to be on call, they must reach the fire station within 5 minutes of receiving the pager message, and we are after people who can offer daytime cover including weekends. www.derbys-fire.gov.uk

JDS Installations is a Chesterfield based family business run by brothers Jamie and Darren Smith, who specialise in bathroom and wetroom installations. We are not salesman, but a caring and trustworthy company who pride ourselves on our customer’s satisfaction. We back this clichÊ statement up by not accepting the final 40% of the final balance until our customers are entirely happy with our workmanship. We have no expensive showroom over heads so we pass the savings directly onto our customers. We also install en-suites, cloak rooms and all aspects of porcelain & ceramic tiling. Every project we take on we put our heart and soul into it, from the initial meeting of the potential customer, the designing of the project and right through until the completion of the Installation. All the work is carried out from start to finish entirely by us as we do not subcontract several tradesmen, therefore reducing time delays on your project and minimalising disruption within your home. All our previous customers said that they would have no hesitation in recommending JDS Installations to anyone which means the world to us as we know we have done our job right from start to finish. JDS Installations are installing showroom quality bathrooms & wetrooms throughout Bolsover, Chesterfield, Worksop, Mansfield & all surrounding areas.

Testimonial to JDS Installations

“We have two main objectives within our company these are, leaving our customers happy to enjoy their new bathroom, by producing our customer their own unique showroom quality bathroom

Earlier this year we visited our relatives and were impressed by the quality of the work carried out by JDS with their bathroom. We have been disappointed with contractors in the past. However we are very pleased with the work carried out by Darren and Jamie, they have transformed our shower room. During the initial meetings, they listened and designed and bathroom based on our requirements, presenting samples of materials and we had the opportunity to make any adjustments. Darren and Jamie are enthusiastic and passionate about their work. Customer satisfaction is highly important to them. We knew exactly what the price was beforehand, the work was completed on time and the quality is exceptional! Thank you JDS. Best Regards Mr and Mrs Wells 43

HOUSE TO HOME BATHROOM STORAGE IDEAS FOR STREAMLINED SPACES

Bathroom storage is essential for keeping your bathroom tidy and clutter free. If you’ve got a small bathroom or a large family - or both - then you are probably in need of some clever bathroom storage ideas to help keep clutter behind closed doors and more attractive items out on show. There’s so many essential bits and pieces in a bathroom that you just can’t store elsewhere: razors, hairbrushes, cotton wool pads, loo roll, spare soaps, toothpaste... All of these must-haves need somewhere to live and sometimes more than one set of bathroom storage is needed. With a little careful planning it’s easy to keep the clutter from getting out of control. If you have a lot of lotions and potions, consider a fitted bathroom, which tends to offer maximum storage capacity.

Think about bathroom furniture, storage cabinets, vanities and shelves. A bathroom storage cabinet is the most obvious way to store everything from towels to bath oils. Freestanding bathroom cabinets are a versatile option and can be taken with you if you move out. They also give vintage or antique pieces. Made-to-measure bathroom shelves

will make the most of any space. Or look for shelving units - freestanding or wallhung shelving units work in a variety of bathrooms spaces - and as well as storing the essentials can display your prettier trinkets. Shop around for smart bathroom accessories too: towel stores, bath racks, soap holders, shower caddies, loo-roll holders and brushes - even light pulls - can add the perfect finishing touches.

and worktop storage with a bank of mirrored wall cabinetry. The effect is elegant, indulgent and super smart - with the room’s storage potential maximised.

Whether you need one, two or all of these storage ideas, our tricks and tips for squeezing a little more space out of your bathroom aren’t to be missed. Read on to see how to declutter your bathroom... Re-purpose a ladder bookcase for the bathroom.

Add a sideboard for glamorous looks. Combine a sideboard and modular wall shelves for oodles of storage and display space and a glamorous look in the bathroom. With coloured glass bottles and silver trays this arrangement looks for all the world like a boudoir dressing table, especially with the addition of a velvet buttoned footstool.

Use a bookcase for instant freestanding storage in the bathroom. This design is clean and simple and provides eyecatching practical storage and display space for towels, baskets, toiletries and vases. A deep wall shade and white woodwork will allow bathroom shelves, furniture and sanitary ware to stand out. If space restrictions make fitted bathroom furniture difficult, look for other ways to create storage space. Tongue-and-groove panelling houses the cistern in this small bathroom, but also provides a shelf for baskets and toiletries. Keeping the panelling below window height allows the sill to provide a second shelf for storage and here houses a mirrored cabinet. Fit rows of hooks nearby for handy towel storage next to the basin.

Match storage above and below If you have the space in your bathroom, match a run of vanity

Gardening

IN NOVEMBER NOVEMBER

Cut down herbaceous stems and clear the tatty remains of annuals, but do leave a little cover of the perennials that fade relatively elegantly (sedum, astilbes and grasses for example). They will provide winter interest as well as some much needed wildlife shelter - ladybirds especially appreciate winter quarters and will repay your hospitality by disposing of aphids in industrial quantities next year. Leaving sodden debris and fallen leaves around plants will only encourage pests and disease. Clear out the greenhouse, wash pots and trays, clean, mend and oil your tools and throw away anything that is beyond hope or reasonable repair! Cleaning your greenhouse thoroughly will prevent pests from hibernating and leaping into action next spring. Wash the windows inside and out to allow maximum light in over the winter and scrub benches, fixtures and glazing bars with disinfectant, making sure you hose the whole place down really well, especially dark and dusty corners. For really effective pest elimination, fumigation is the ticket. Move all plants outside, shut the windows, light a sulphur candle in the middle of the floor, (retreat at speed!), shut the door and wait until the smoke and fumes have completely dispersed several hours later. Your greenhouse should now be delightfully pest free!

PLANTING

Plant bare-rooted trees, shrubs, hedging and roses as well as fruit trees and bushes. Soak the roots in a bucket of water for an hour first and protect against frost and wind if exposed.

TREES & SHRUBS

Trees, shrubs and climbers Plant and move bare rooted trees, hedges, shrubs and climbers. Plants are relatively dormant now and there is still enough warmth in the soil to allow them to become established before the really harsh weather sets in. Thorough soil preparation is essential for planting trees and hedges which should last a lifetime. Excavate the hole or trench and dig in plenty of composted manure or organic matter - preferably a couple of weeks beforehand to allow the soil to settle. Soak the root ball in water for an hour and plant to the same depth as before (look where the stem becomes darker), stake, if necessary, on the windward side to prevent rubbing, fill the hole, firm well (but beware over firming as this will drive out air from the soil and can be even more damaging than loose planting), mulch with a good layer of organic matter and keep well watered. Protect newly planted trees, hedges and shrubs from the elements with a temporary netting windbreak if the spot is windy or exposed.

ROSES

Now is the ideal time to plant roses. Soak the rootball in water, mix the compost from the pot into the soil, put some composted farmyard manure at the bottom of the hole

and remember it is essential that the hole is deep enough for soil to cover the graft union; lay a stick across the hole with the rose in place to make sure! Prune existing roses by about half to prevent ‘wind rock’ and burn all fallen leaves - this will help in the battle against fungal diseases which will otherwise snuggle into your soil ready for action again next year.

LAWNS

Rule one - keep off the lawn when it is sodden or frozen - a startling degree of damage is remarkably easily inflicted. Rake up fallen leaves regularly - left in place they will encourage fungal disease and bare patches and make your final cut when the grass is reasonably dry with the blades set high. Scarify and spike to improve surface drainage and aeration and apply autumn feed and moss killer if you didn’t do it last month.

Gardening Tips Book your mower in for servicing - leaving it until spring just places your machine firmly at the back of a long queue!
