year’s raspberry canes to support wires or fencing. • Move citrus trees indoors to a bright, frost free position (4-12°C) away from cold draughts and radiators. Reduce watering in winter but do not let the plant dry out completely. • Now is the perfect time to order strawberry runners and plant up a strawberry patch for cropping next year. • Clear the straw from around the base of strawberry plants to increase ventilation. Shear back old foliage to encourage fresh new growth. • Divide congested clumps of rhubarb by digging up and splittng into several pieces with a spade. Re-plant the healthiest looking pieces. • When planting blueberry plants make sure you have an acid soil or alternatively grow them in pots of ericaceous compost. • Autumn is an ideal time to plant many varieties of fruit trees. See our extensive range of fruit trees online and get ready to enjoy delicious fresh fruit straight from your garden or allotment. • Apples should come away easily when ripe • Apples should come away easily when ripe • To test when apples are ripe gently lift them in the palm of your hand or give them a gentle pull - they should come away easily. • Remove any diseased fruits from branches or the ground as they may spread infections to next year’s crops. • Wrap glue bands around the trunks of apple trees to trap winter moth females whose caterpillars shred spring flowers. • Remove the netting from fruit cages to allow birds to catch and eat any pests that are lurking there. IN THE GREENHOUSE • If your greenhouse is fairly empty, now is a good time to clean and disinfect it. This allows more light in and prevents pests and diseases over-wintering. • Remove greenhouse shading • Remove greenhouse shading • If you haven’t done so already, remove any greenhouse shading to allow as much light in as possible. • Move tender plants into the greenhouse to protect them from early frosts. Make sure that there is enough space between them to keep them well ventilated and reduce the risk of disease. • Check any plants which you are bringing inside for pests such as aphids. • Continue to remove any fallen or dead plant material to keep the growing area free of fungal diseases. • Set up your greenhouse heater in case of early frosts.

LOOKING AFTER YOUR LAWN • Clear up fallen leaves regularly to allow light to the grass. • A last mowing can be made this month before leaving your lawn for the winter. • Recut any lawn edges if needed. Try installing lawn edging to make future maintenance easier. • Finish off essential lawn maintenance to avoid waterlogging and compaction over winter. Try aerating your lawn with a garden fork, raking thatch from the surface and repairing dead patches. • Fresh turf can still be laid now. Autumn rains should ensure the turf settles successfully.

CARING FOR YOUR GUINEA PIG Guinea pigs – or cavies, to give them their proper name – are fascinating, intelligent and, when handled correctly, friendly. They originate from South America and there are eight species, but only one – the domestic cavy – is kept as a pet. Guinea pigs live for around four to eight years, so their care is a long-term commitment. Males are known as boars and females are called sows. Guinea pigs need company of their own kind and can be kept in same sex groups or in pairs. Don’t forget, if you’re planning to keep a male and female together, it’s essential that the male is neutered to avoid unwanted babies. It takes around four weeks for a male to become sterile after being neutered.

1. HOME COMFORTS

Guinea pigs are curious and like to see what’s going on, so they can be kept either indoors or out. However, they have sensitive hearing so, unless your home is quiet, they are usually happiest outdoors. They need a large predator-proof wooden hutch and run. Each hutch should have a separate sleeping area where the guinea pigs can retreat out of sight to get some peace and quiet. The hutch and run should be out of direct sunlight in a weatherproof, draught-proof shed, as guinea pigs are vulnerable to all extremes of weather. Do not keep guinea pigs – or any other animals – in a garage used to keep vehicles because the fumes can kill them. Extra shelter and bedding must be provided during the winter months. Soft straw can be used but has no nutritional value so the best bedding you can use is hay, which also makes up the largest component of their food. If you use wood shavings they must be dust-free and you should avoid cedar shavings as they can cause health problems. Never use fluffy bedding because it can get wrapped around limbs and injure a guinea pig and it doesn’t dissolve if eaten.

20

2. FOOD FOR THOUGHT

As guinea pigs are naturally grazing animals, it’s important that they always have quality, bagged, non-dusty hay to keep their digestive systems working, along with a small amount guinea pig mix. They also need some fruit and vegetables to give them a source of vitamin C because guinea pigs lack the enzyme to produce this themselves. Melons, oranges and dark green, leafy vegetables like spinach, broccoli, kale and cabbage are all good sources. Never give your guinea pig lettuce as this can cause diarrhoea. Hay and vegetables are just as important as guinea pig mix so don’t rely solely on mix to feed your pet. Put food in earthenware bowls (which are hard to tip over), or stainless steel bowls that clip on to the front of the hutch. Clean, fresh water from a gravity bottle must be available at all times and changed every day. Do not give guinea pigs rabbit food because they have different nutritional requirements. Guinea pigs can become obese if they are fed too much.

3. HEALTH MATTERS

A healthy guinea pig is alert, with bright eyes and a good coat. One of the most common problems in guinea pigs is bumblefoot, where the foot becomes swollen due to a bacterial infection, often caused by dirty bedding.

They are also prone to eye problems, so it is important to use dust- free bedding. Other conditions to watch out for include mange (itchy skin), dental problems caused by not enough fibre and obesity from being fed too many treats. Skin problems are common in guinea pigs. If you have any concerns about your guinea pig’s health, seek your vet’s advice. Grooming is a vital part of the routine care of guinea pigs. Long-haired varieties need daily grooming as their coats can quickly become matted and uncomfortable. Female guinea pigs reach sexual maturity at four to five weeks old and males at eight to nine weeks. Do not be tempted to allow your guinea pigs to breed, as there are risks associated with pregnancy and birth. Females that do not breed by the age of six to eight months can become pregnant, but they are physically unable to give birth as the pelvic bones fuse by this age. Male guinea pigs should be neutered so they can live as a pair with a female without breeding.

responsible for ensuring that the children provide the correct care and attention.

8. DON’T FORGET... • Guinea pigs have a long lifespan compared to other small animals • Guinea pigs need company of their own kind, either in a pair or in a small group of the same sex • Do not keep a breeding pair. If you are planning to keep a male and female together, talk to your vet about having the male neutered • Do not keep guinea pigs and rabbits in the same hutch or run, as the guinea pigs may be bullied and severely injured • Make sure your guinea pigs always have dustextracted hay to keep their digestive systems working and, a constant supply of clean water

4. EXERCISE AND ENTERTAINMENT

Provide your guinea pigs with as much floor space as possible – a hutch for two should not be less than 1.2m long by 60cm wide. They also need an outdoor run accessible from the hutch so they can graze. They can be allowed to run free indoors under supervision. Make sure all doors are closed, there are no escape holes and that cats and dogs are kept out of the room. Guinea pigs are not usually interested in toys but some enjoy exploring cardboard boxes and running through tubes or pipes. You could also try hiding small amounts of food around the cage to help keep your guinea pigs alert and active.

5. COMPANY

Your pet should only have other guinea pigs as companions. Never keep guinea pigs in the same hutch or run as rabbits, as there is a risk the guinea pigs will be bullied and seriously injured. The best combination is a pair or small group of the same sex, although neutered males and females may get along.

6. GETTING TO KNOW YOU

Guinea pigs are friendly and most are happy to be handled once they have got used to their new surroundings. Always use both hands to pick up a guinea pig. Place one hand across their shoulders with your thumb tucked behind the shoulder and fingers wrapped around the ribs. Hold tightly enough to be secure without squeezing and put your other hand underneath the hindquarters for support. Hold the guinea pig close to your body or sit down and put them on your lap so they feel secure.

7. GUINEA PIGS AS CHILDREN’S PETS

Guinea pigs can make good pets for adults or children. As guinea pigs are active during the day, you can have lots of fun just watching them. They communicate vocally and different noises have different meanings. A cooing sound gives reassurance, while a squeak can be a warning – a sign that the guinea pig is frightened or anticipation that food is coming! They’re unhappy when left alone in a hutch in the garden because they need company. Guinea pigs are gentle animals and make good children’s pets but you need to think about the fact that they have quite a long lifespan. They can live as long as seven years, so they might outlive a child’s interest. This is why it is important that the adults in the household share the children’s interest in the guinea pig. As with all small pets, an adult needs to be

5AUTUMN HOME IMPROVEMENT PROJECTS

With the end of the summer holidays, suitcases packed away, and the new term of school, focus traditionally shifts to getting the home winter-ready. This year is no different as it’s already shaping up to be a peak time for home improvement, so it’s time to take action on those mental lists and undertake those projects in and around the home. Get some advice from the team at Anglian Home Improvements with their top 5 home improvement projects below:

1. MAKE AN ENTRANCE What better way to add kerb appeal to your property and make a great first impression than by improving the entrance to your home? Replacing a front door is a quick and highly effective way of updating the exterior of your property and you can make a real style statement. Whether you opt for low maintenance, high security uPVC; super sturdy wood; sleek modern aluminium; or ultra-durable and energy efficient glass reinforced polyester (GRP), today’s homeowner can choose from a range of colours and designs to suit the look you want to achieve. So what should you look for? A door that is made to measure for you, and credentials such as high performance security, durability and energy efficiency.

2. LIVE A LIFE IN COLOUR The trend-led world of interiors sees the introduction of an exciting new range of catwalk-inspired colours every season, so why settle for magnolia when you can dramatically transform your living space with a simple coat of paint. Your home is a blank canvas. Whether you paint the dining room in readiness for the allimportant Christmas lunch, or you refresh your bedroom to provide a sanctuary from family life, a paint project can help bring your home right up-to-date and can set the scene for further changes in the home.

3. GET COSY With the nights already drawing in, autumn is the perfect month for homeowners to turn their attention to making their property cosier and more comfortable. Make your living room the perfect place for the family to gather with the addition of a log burner – on trend and immensely practical, this will provide an

instant update for your interior. You can also make a longer term investment in your family’s comfort by replacing old windows with energy efficient double or triple-glazed windows. Choose from uPVC, wooden or aluminium with frames which are available in a range of colours; and whether you want to create a contemporary, modern classic or a traditional-style home, finesse the look with your personal choice of window furniture. You can also make an impression with the glazing. Anglian, for example, offers a broad range of decorative glass which includes, colours, bevels, etched glass, and its craftsmen can also work closely with you to design exactly what you want.

4. GET CRAFTY WITH UPCYLING If your old items of furniture have seen better days and simply do not fit into your interior scheme, give them a new lease of life and upcycle them. To achieve a costeffective makeover, take your inspiration from sources such as Pinterest, get expert advice and information online or from your local DIY store, and have fun experimenting with the likes of chalk paint and different handles to create a look that is tailored to suit you.

DISCOVER NORTH WALES

07586 333 733

Call: Email: leeshovervision@hotmail.com www.leeshovervision.com

DISCOVER NORTH WALES Pontcycyltes Aqueduct INDUSTRIAL DESIGN & NATURAL BEAUTY In 1805, architects Thomas Telford and William Jessop built Pontcysyllte’s cast iron aqueduct on 19 pillars over 100 feet (30 metres) above the River Dee, on the Welsh-English border. More than 200 years later, this vast landmark was named a World Heritage Site. The site starts at the Horseshoe Falls, named after the shape of the waterway the canal draws its stream from. Now you can follow in their footsteps, gazing at your reflection in the man-made weir where industrial design and natural beauty meet. There are so many ways to enjoy this area: find out why visitors have spent more than a century forgetting their cares with short or longer horsedrawn boat trips along the canal wharf in Llangollen. Pulling on your walking boots If you’d rather travel by foot than hoof and barge, there are 11 miles of countryside to soak up in this stunning corner of the country, all easily walkable with plenty of pubs and picnic spots as you go. Intrepid walkers can head off track and onto trails such as the one between the Falls and Llangollen, which slopes down fields for a bracing, gentle wander in any season. There are loads of lengthier trails to choose from, not least the one along Offa’s Dyke, the 8th century earthwork separating Wales and England. Fancy crossing the 18 piers? Walk above it at sunset for spectacular views. Want to go underneath? Take a boat ride and admire the mortar under Britain’s largest aqueduct of its kind, said to have been made out of oxen blood, lime and water. Then duck into Trevor Basin to park up or grab a drink and watch the canal conquerers breeze past. There’s an expert local or two ready to captain a trip along the water if it floats your boat, but Trevor is neighboured by another village, Cefn Mawr. You’ll find a country park teeming with donkeys, chickens, pigs and other menagerie beauties there, as well as playgrounds and places to refresh. Lay back or go wild – the choice is yours!

1. With central heating systems now a common way to heat our homes gone are the days of fireplaces being a necessity. But Derbyshire Fireplace Centre don’t just supply stunning fireplaces, they also provide stoves as well as all the accessories you need to create a warm, cosy surrounding, all at an affordable price. Visit Wayne and the team at their showroom to discuss your ideas for a beautiful focal addition to your home.

Call: 01246 828729 Derbyshire Fireplace Centre 36 Intake road, Bolsover, Business Park, Chesterfield.

Kym Bellringer

Freelance Journalist

How did the business begin Wayne? I worked on these premises when it had been a different fireplace supplier. As soon as I received word it was becoming available I decided to begin a family run business in the same industry which is how it became Derbyshire Fireplace Centre, for me it created the sense of coming home to a place I had known so well.

2.

Are there any specific requirements prior to installing a fireplace in the home? An installer is required to have the correct qualifications to ensure the fireplace is fitted appropriately and safely, they must also have correct certification for fitting solid fuel fires and in appropriate cases certificates for electrical installation. Before choosing a company to fit your desired fireplace ensure these certificates are present. At Derbyshire Fireplace Centre, we ensure all fitters are qualified to the best standard. For the consumer thinking about having a fireplace installed adequate space is required for chimneys or flutes to remove emissions from the fire. The main point I would like to make is that a home is not a home without a warming focal point.

3.

How has the fireplace industry changed throughout the years and how have you kept up to date with these changes? We aim to be a company that never becomes stationary, we believe that if you stay still for too long you eventually end up falling to sleep! Trends change constantly and customers have more choice now when it comes to fireplaces then they did a few decades ago. We ensure all products are kept up to date and installers are fully qualified and equipped to ensure requests from the clients exceed excellent standards.

4.

What are the most common types of fireplaces you install? We fit many gas burners but wood burning stoves seem to be a much desired fireplace in both older and modern homes.

5.

How do you ensure great customer care? We have a saying within this business that previous clients are filed but never forgotten, simply meaning that we look after customers new and old to ensure an excellent overall service. We are a genuine company and wish to look after everybody who comes through our door.

DRONES & QUADCOPTERS THE FUTURE? Drones and quadcopters have revolutionised flight. They help humans to take to the air in new, profound ways. Today’s drones and quadcopters come with mind-blowing capabilities, flight being the least of these. These nifty devices capture dazzling aerial images and enable augmented reality game playing as well. They can go to places humans cannot, enabling them to do much more than thought possible.

WHAT IS A DRONE/QUADCOPTER?

WAYS TO USE QUADCOPTERS

Drones belong to a class of aerial vehicles known as Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs). These vehicles can take to the air without pilots. Essentially, this makes drones flying robots. Encompassing both planes and quadcopters, they have software-controlled flight plans integrated into their systems. These systems work with Global Positioning Technology (GPS) to guide and track their movements. The quadcopter is a newer UAV. As its name suggests, this rotorcraft (a craft lifted by spinning rotor blades) depends on four quick-turning rotors to give it thrust. Two spin clockwise and the other two, counterclockwise. Two sets of identical, fixed pitch propellers help the process. Pilots achieve control of the craft by using remote control transmitters to change the speed of its rotor discs.

Research • University researchers, who work in various fields, use the quadcopter as a research tool. They gather information needed for work on robotics, flight control and real-time systems. • Quadcopters make suitable test platforms, as they are relatively cheaper and smaller. Anyone can fly them, which makes them convenient tools for researchers. • Apart from this, these durable little devices can survive harsh environments. They can go into dangerous places on behalf of researchers. This helps solve many difficulties with cost and logistics. Military, law enforcement and community agencies • Military scientists in different countries invented quadcopters for combat and reconnaissance purposes. They still serve these functions. • Law enforcement agencies use them in search and rescue operations as well. These little aerial vehicles scour inaccessible areas for disaster survivors. Agencies also use them to uncover criminal activity. One of these drones is the Aeryon Scout, developed by Canadian Company Aeryon Labs. It has helped uncover drug trafficking rings in Central America.

THE FIRST QUADCOPTERS Quadcopters were among the first vertical take-off and landing vehicles (VTOLs). Earlier helicopters used tail rotors to counterbalance the torque, or rotating force, generated by a single, main rotor. This was wasteful and inefficient. Engineers developed quadcopters to solve the problems that helicopter pilots had with making vertical flights. The first was the Omnichen 2, invented in 1920 by Etienne Omnichen. This craft made 1000 successful flights and flew a recorded distance of 360 meters (1181.1 feet).

CURRENT DEVELOPMENTS Technology has advanced quadcopters dramatically. In the past decade, companies like DJ Innovations, Parrot, Walkera, Blade and Heli-Max have launched mini quadcopters that use state-of-the-art computer technology for flight control and aerial photography. Remote-controlled quadcopters have qualities that make them popular among enthusiasts. They gain new ones every day. 40

Flowers Delivered Da ily! Commercial use and aerial photography • Amateur pilots and enthusiasts love quadcopters as their dazzling aerial stunts make excellent conversation topics. • These days, many use them to capture aerial images and videos. Three-axis gyro technology stabilises many of the latest quadcopters, allowing them to capture these images without a shaky, “jello” effect. • Expert pilots regard Go Pro cameras as the best ones to use with quadcopters. Pilots of Walkera, Blade and DJI quadcopters can make use of their Go Pro cameras, the Go Pro channel and the Go Pro application on the smart phones. They can easily attach these cameras to their quadcopters for filming. The DJI Phantom Vision 2 and the DJI Phantom 2 Vision Plus have wonderful filming capabilities. Threeaxis gimbals allow them to capture smooth videos. Pilots can capture more stunning images by loading quadcopters with Go Pro cameras. • The Blade 350 QX, too, works well with a Go Pro camera. This little quadcopter, unlike others, has an agility mode for advanced flying. This nimble device works well with Go Pro cameras like the Go Pro Hero 3 and can capture images from many perspectives. • Walkera is another company that produces quadcopters that work in tandem with Go Pro cameras. The Walkera Scout X4 and X800 already have excellent cameras, but they can carry the Go Pro Hero 3 to capture excellent aerial images. Augmented Reality Games • Apart from being able to use them with cameras, pilots can play augmented reality games with their quadcopters as well. Augmented reality gives them a perspective of the real world, with a few thrilling enhancements. The real-world simulation makes the games enticing for older children and teens. • Helicopter Game is another AR game that works the same way. Pilots have to move objects through obstacle courses without blowing their quadcopters up. This game, however, has more unpredictable controls. Teens and adults will find it a challenge to move objects without damaging their quadcopters. • In Secure the Deck, players have to storm the deck of the ship. They have to push troops on glowing pads so that they can take the ship’s deck over. The task sounds simple, but players face the challenge of high seas that will cause men to go overboard. • In Helic, a shoot-to–kill game, players have to protect turrets from enemy attacks. While the turret serves as a launching pad for missiles and bullets, players should shoot the enemy themselves.

CASTLE STREET REPORT FOR AUGUST

Bolsover WI was formed in September 2013 to inspire women who wish to play an active role in the Bolsover community; learning new skills, sharing ideas and making friends in a fun and friendly way. We are a group covering age ranges from early twenties to mid seventies.

www.bolsoverwi.wixsite.com/mysite

26th September ‘Pilates with Mick Stables’. from Ashover Physio. 24th October ‘Our 4th Birthday!’ We’ll be getting ‘Wrapped up for for Christmas’ with professional gift wrapper, Jo Thompson. 28th November ‘Christmas Extravaganza!’.

We meet on the fourth Tuesday of the month in the

Bolsover Parish rooms, 7.30-9.30 To contact us email: bolsoverwi@gmail.com or find us on Facebook page / Bolsover WI

On the 24th of July, I and another member of the group attended the joint meeting of HCCG and NDCCGs at Matlock. The meeting was well attended and was streamed live on the internet. The closure of the Bolsover Hospital was confirmed, but it won’t close until an alternative venue is in place. On the 8th August, the same two members attended the HCCG PRG meeting at Williamthorpe. The meeting was informed of the latest information on the 21c programme. There is to be a ‘Dementia Rapid Response Team,’ installed to care for the ‘frail older people’. Investment for this has already begun, and it will be probably start in the Dales area. It is hoped that the DRRT will lead to fewer beds being required in hospital. The 24 beds at CRH, will be dedicated to patients requiring ‘rehab’. These beds will not be privately funded, but will be community beds run by the DCHS. Any money saved by the changes will be re-invested into patient care. We held our August meeting on the 21st, where we were joined by Dr Alex Carberry, who gave us an update on progress at the practice. The new ‘self booking in’ machine was said to be working well, and it saves time for the reception staff. We were told that Dr Oakley will now be away on maternity leave until April 2018, cover for her absence is being put in place. There was a discussion relating to concerns from patients, about problems relating to our reception staff. We have had reports, of inappropriate tone of language from some members of staff. I was able to inform the meeting, that I had held talks with Chris Wildsmith our Area Manager, in an attempt to solve the matter. I would like to point out to our patients, that if they think they have grounds for making a complaint, then, they should ask for a ‘Complaints Form’ at reception. When completed, put it in an envelope marked ‘confidential’ and address it to Tracey Siggsworth, our Practice Manager. All complaints, and suggestions, will be looked into and a reply will be provided. If you are unable to fill in the form yourself, then you can ask a relative, or carer to help complete the form. They must then write their name and relationship on the form, and then sign it. If, after the complaint has been looked at, the patient is not satisfied , then they can report their concerns to the PPG, who will then try and resolve the issue. This must be the way that any complaints or concerns are dealt with. Our patients must also be prepared to face the possibility of having to attend meetings to explain their problems. Patients can rest assured that the meetings will not be confrontational, and that every effort will be made for patients to feel comfortable and at ease. If they feel that they would like to have someone with them for support, then that won’t be a problem. Patients can contact members of the PPG ( there is a list in the waiting room) by leaving a message at reception. The PPG may soon be able to put information on the TV in the waiting room. This might be via a ‘rolling message’ across the bottom of the screen. I have some very important information for ex miners and their families. It has been reported, that when a post mortem has been carried out in cases of Posthumous Pneumoconiosis, it is taking too long for the report from the District Officer/ Coroner to be made available. This delay could lead to any claims from the DWP or CISWO, for bereavement payments, being ‘OUT OF TIME’. If anyone has been affected in this way, then they are advised to contact the NUM.
