Hello and a warm welcome from Inside Bolsover District magazine Edition 9 is here, February is the month of love! The time of year we reach out and make that special effort to show the ones we love a little bit more love. For the majority of women, Valentine’s Day is special, so whatever you’re planning for February 14th, make sure it’s memorable. You don’t have to spend a fortune or be especially crazy, but making her feel loved is essential. How will you be spending your Valentine’s night? There’s nothing anyone loves more than being completely taken care of. Give her a dozen roses and a nice card, or even better make one, tell her how much she means to you! Light some candles, cook her a beautiful dinner, give her a massage, and tell her not to get up from the sofa all night long because this is her night and you want her to completely relax. Pretty sure NO woman will complain. What’s happening in this months edition? There are two editorials for advice and guidance on Valentine’s day (page 18 & 44). Kick back with a coffee and test your brain power with our Brainteaser Break (page 10). Get the kids involved with the magazine, ask them to colour in the image and send it to us, or share it on our Facebook page (page 38). Our motoring editorial has increased this month and we review something different, check that out! (page 42). All this, plus our new competition Postcode Payout (page 49). If you love our magazine as much as we do or feel it might be missing something, send us your comments, email: insidebolsover@outlook.com Remember we are not just a magazine company, we are the full package design and print service, we believe we have a proven, winning formula for our magazine and advertising and you won’t get better exposure for your business. Why not get in touch? Please mention Inside Bolsover when responding to our advertiser’s and check us out on social media! Jamie Snarski. Editor Inside Bolsover District Magazine

QR code (abbreviated from Quick Response Code) is the trademark for a type of matrix barcode (or two-dimensional barcode) first designed for the automotive industry in Japan. A barcode is a machine-readable optical label that contains information about the item to which it is attached. A QR code uses four standardized encoding mode(numeric, alphanumeric, byte/ binary, and kanji) to efficiently store data; extensions may also be used.
SEEING IS BELIEVING! 3 EASY STEPS TO GET STARTED 1. Download a FREE QR Code APP for your Android or Smartphone. 2. Open the QR Code reader APP. 3. Scan the QR Code to be instantly connected.
The QR code system became popular outside the automotive industry due to its fast readability and greater storage capacity compared to standard UPC barcodes. Applications include product tracking, item identification, time tracking, document management, and general marketing. A QR code consists of black squares arranged in a square grid on a white background, which can be read by an imaging device such as a camera, and processed using Reed–Solomon error correction until the image can be appropriately interpreted. The required data are then extracted from patterns that are present in both horizontal and vertical components of the image. QR codes have become common in consumer advertising. Typically, a smartphone is used as a QR code scanner, displaying the code and converting it to some useful form (such as a standard URL for a website, thereby obviating the need for a user to type it into a web browser). The QR code has become a focus of advertising strategy, since it provides a way to access a brand’s website more quickly than by manually entering a URL. Beyond mere convenience to the consumer, the importance of this capability is that it increases the conversion rate (the chance that contact with the advertisement will convert to a sale), by coaxing interested prospects further down the conversion funnel with little delay or effort, bringing the viewer to the advertiser’s website immediately, where a longer and more targeted sales pitch may lose the viewer’s interest.

THE HISTORY OF
VALENTINES EVERY FEBRUARY WE CELEBRATE VALENTINE’S DAY BY GIVING FLOWERS, CANDY AND CARDS TO THOSE WE LOVE. WE DO THIS IN HONOR OF ST. VALENTINE. YOU MAY BE WONDERING, “WHO IS ST. VALENTINE”? TIME TO BRUSH UP ON YOUR VALENTINE’S HISTORY! There are different ideas as to where or how the celebration of Valentine’s Day began. The Roman’s celebrated a festival called Lupercalia on February 15. This festival was held to ward off the danger of wolves to their flocks and honoured their God Lupercalia. Some people think that Valentine’s Day is based on this festival. Another legend is that St. Valentine was a priest who served during third century Rome. During that time, there was an Emperor who ruled Rome named Claudius II. Emperor Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers than those that were married and outlawed marriage for all young men serving in his army. Supposedly, Valentine, decided this decree just wasn’t fair and chose to marry young couples secretly. When Emperor Claudius II found out about Valentine’s actions he had him imprisoned, and later put to death.. Some stories say that the young couples, who Valentine had married, gave flowers and letters to Valentine when they visited him in the prison. In a slightly different version of the legend, Valentine was an imprisoned man who fell in love with his jailor’s daughter. Before he was put to death he sent the first ‘valentine’ to his love when he wrote her a letter and signed it ‘Your Valentine’. These words are still used on cards today.
18
Perhaps we’ll never know the true identity and story behind the man named St. Valentine, but this much is for sure… February has been the month to celebrate love for a long time, dating way back to the Middle Ages. In fact, Valentine’s Day ranks second only to Christmas in number of greeting cards sent. Another famous person from Valentine’s Day that you may be wondering about is Cupid (Latin cupido, “desire”). In Roman mythology Cupid is the son of Venus, goddess of love. His counterpart in Greek mythology is Eros, god of love. Cupid is often said to be a mischievous boy who goes around wounding both gods and humans with his arrows, causing them to fall in love.

Recipe of the month FEBRUARY
Hidden Heart cake ........................................ Slice into this delicious loaf cake and reveal the secret heart design running through the middle! A really romantic bake!
Method .........................
Ingredients .........................
1. Heat oven to 160C/140C fan/gas 3. Grease a 900g loaf tin and line with a long strip of baking parchment. Cream 175g butter and 175g sugar until light and fluffy. Beat 3 of the eggs and pour in, a little at a time, mixing after each addition. Sift together 140g flour, 1⁄2 tsp baking powder and the cocoa, then fold into the butter mixture along with the almonds. Combine 100ml milk, 11⁄2 tsp vanilla and all the food colouring and add to the batter, then mix until evenly coloured.
1. 2 x 175g unsalted butter, softened
2. Pour into the prepared loaf tin and bake for 1 hr 10 mins until a skewer comes out clean. Cool for 10 mins in the tin, then transfer to a wire rack. When cool, cut the cake into 4cm slices. Using a 5cm cutter, stamp out the hearts (save any remaining cake for another treat). 3. Repeat step 1 to make a second cake mixture – you won’t have cocoa or food colour in this batch. Pour 3⁄4 of the mixture into the prepared loaf tin. Push the bottoms of the hearts into the batter in a tightly packed row. Spoon over the remaining cake mixture, covering as much of the hearts as possible. bake for 1 hr or until a skewer comes out clean. Cool for 10 mins in the tin, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely. 4. For the icing, gently heat all the ingredients over a low heat until combined. Leave to cool, then chill until needed. Spread over the cooled cake and decorate with the sprinkles, if using. Will keep for 3 days stored in a cake tin.
24

HOUSE TO HOME
FEBRUARY
CREATE THE KITCHEN OF YOUR DREAMS WITH THE TOP TRENDS FOR 2017 Whether your space is a compact galley in a bijoux apartment or a grand open-plan room in a family home, investing a new kitchen can be exciting and daunting in equal measures. It’s also a major expense, so it’s important to get it right first time. There area so many choices to make it can be confusing so to help, we’ve discovered the very latest looks for kitchens – from new twists on classic Shaker to the latest utilitarian loft-look – to show that whatever your taste, budget or space constraints, there is a design out here that’s a prefect fit for you. So read on and be inspired to create the kitchen of your dreams.
INDUSTRIAL TEXTURE
As an antidote to today’s modern fitted kitchens, industrial style is all about practical cooking spaces with a backtobasics feel. Inspired by urban loft apartments and reinvented warehouses, its key elements include exposed architectural features, such as steel beams, bare-brick walls and reclaimed factory lighting, combined with touches of brushed copper and gold.
SHOW OF YOUR WALLS
Take inspiration for splashbacks and walls from materials found at old railways or factories – bare brick, unpolished concrete or metro tiles in a brickwork pattern will all add character. Go for grout in a grey or stone-coloured putty to really accentuate the pattern, even if you choose white tiles.
MIX UP YOUR MATERIALS
Create impact by pairing natural materials that have patina and texture, such as wood and marble, with sleeker, glossier finishes. Understated cabinets in neutral shades will let distressed timbers, concrete surfaces and ruggedhewn stone really stand out. Even butler’s sinks and other traditional buys can look right at home here – simply add an industrial twist, such as exposed copper pipes or taps.
ADD METAL ELEMENTS
Non-porous and widely available, metal’s a key material choice for kitchens. What’s more, its long association with construction makes it the perfect partner for a contemporary industrial look. Steel worktops or unit fronts are durable and easy to clean, while brushed metal will give any scheme that lived-in look. Elsewhere, add metallic touches with stainless-steel appliances, zinc seating, wirework storage and wire cage bulbs.
26
GET THE RIGHT LIGHT
Reclaimed lighting, often featuring oversized metal or opaque glass shades, is a fairly simple way to add utilitarian chic to a kitchen. Whether they’ve been salvaged from an old factory or they’re authentic-looking reproductions, industrial-style lights are often a budgetfriendly choice. If you’re buying originals then embrace the chipped paint or tarnished surfaces – the more battered, the better. Simply hang them above an island or dining table to bring light and style to your space.
PATTERN AND COLOUR
It seems that the days when we all wanted to play it safe with decoration are gone. With more people improving rather than moving, we’ve taken the opportunity to add some personality into our homes. Kitchen makers have taken this new-found bravery on board and you can now buy kitchen cabinets in a huge array of hues, textures and patterns. While blues and greys are still very much in evidence it’s to the darker sides of this spectrum that we’re turning, with indigo, navy and graphite grey proving popular. If your style is more understated, then rich shades such as olive green, aubergine and graphite are a good choice.

Curbar Edge Walk The Curbar Edge walk is of average difficulty, as it passes over rough and steep ground at times. The total distance of the walk is just less than 7 miles, and it is advised to allow between 3-4 hours in order to complete the walk. Curbar Ridge provides excellent views of the Derwent valley and the surrounding countryside. The walk begins at Curbar Gap car park with walkers heading towards Curbar Gap along the road until they reach a lay-by. Upon reaching the lay-by a path heading in the direction of Curbar Gap will become visible. Once walkers reach Curbar Gap they should take the left fork of the footpath which then leads up to Curbar Edge. Once walkers have gained access to Curbar Edge they should continue along the path which follows the top of the ridge. This path provides fantastic views of the Peak District countryside as well as a great view of the village of Curbar. The main path along the ridge will eventually reach the A625, after around an hour’s walking. Upon reaching the A625 walkers should turn right, and then left climbing over the style which leads into Haywood. Walkers will then find a path as soon as they climb over the style which crosses over a stream in the direction of a car park. A left turn should be taken at the car park which will lead down to a gate, which should be walked through until a fork in the path is reached. A second left turn should be taken at the fork which will lead walkers downhill through a wooded area. The path continues downhill and meets a stream which should then be followed, with walkers keeping the stream on their left hand side. The stream will eventually meet a gate which joins a track leading into Grindleford which should be followed. Walkers should turn left at the main road leading into Grindleford, and then a second left before Grindleford Bridge is reached, which will lead them onto a footpath which passes through a field. The footpath should be followed through Froggatt Wood and into the village of Froggatt itself. Travel along the road until they reach the village of Froggatt, which will lead them to Froggatt Bridge. At this point they should take a left down a lane to the River Derwent. The river should be followed along the path until a bridge is reached, which should be passed by walking over the road and back down to the river. The river should then be followed further past the Mill Ponds at the Goit until a lane is reached. A right should be taken at the lane, which passes through Calver Mill. Walkers should then turn left up the hill into Curbar, then turning right across the field into Curbar car park.

Holiday Review FEBRUARY THE 10 BEST DESTINATIONS FOR FEBRUARY SUN February can be as bleak a concept as January in terms of the European weather. But with school half-term holidays falling in the middle of the month, parents have the opportunity to whisk their children to a destination where the sun shines in earnest. This may cause crowded beaches in popular places, but with the Caribbean at its hottest and driest, there is plenty of time for travellers without offspring to find their own escape zone.
New Orleans
Is there a better time than February to visit the Big Easy? Not only is the raw humidity of the Louisiana summer yet to awaken, but the city’s most famous carnival, Mardi Gras, dominates the month. February 28 will be the big day of celebration in 2017, but you can expect a full week of parades, music, razzmatazz and merriment on St Charles Avenue and in the French Quarter in the build-up to Fat Tuesday.
New Zealand
The twin-island nation on the opposite side of the planet is rarely an obvious choice for travellers in search of sunshine – but there is much to be said for a tour of New Zealand as February clicks into gear. This is the last month of pure summer in this portion of the Southern Hemisphere (the equivalent of August in Europe) – and if autumn is just starting to flicker upon the trees of the South Island, this only adds to the romance of a road trip.
St Lucia
St Lucia is one of the Caribbean’s most coveted destinations – and with good reason. Its west coast is home to some of the planet’s loveliest beaches, including the golden strip of Anse Chastanet – while the twin volcanic bluffs of Gros and Petit Piton offer hiking and climbing challenges, as well as wonderful photos. All of this is served up in temperatures which cling to the upper twenties Celsius, not least in the dry season of December-May.
Miami
Florida’s most party-centric city never needs an excuse to stay out late, and the bars and restaurants of South Beach will be in full swing if you choose to visit in February. However, the advantage of the second month of the year is that while the Spring Break rush – which turns the metropolis into one giant mass of whooping college students – is yet to materialise, the temperature gauge is still nicely slotted into the Twenties Celsius.
Zanzibar
This feted slice of sand and sunshine is a continental junction box – officially African in that it is part of Tanzania, seductively Middle Eastern in the mercantile heritage of Stone Town (which was once the capital of Oman), temptingly tropical in the way the Indian Ocean laps at its sides. Of course, this clash of cultures only makes Zanzibar more exotic – and the weather is largely reliable, flirting with the thirties Celsius as February dawns.
Oman
Neither as grandstanding as Dubai, nor as grand as Abu Dhabi (whose long-in-percolation outposts of the Louvre and the Guggenheim are finally due to open by the start of the next year), Oman is the calmer cousin of the Arabian Peninsula. But it should not be underestimated as a possibility for winter sun. Both Zighy Bay and Sur are alluring places for beach escapes; Muscat is a city of underappreciated culture and sophistication.
Hawaii
There can be no doubt that America’s mid-Pacific archipelago requires quite a journey from the UK, and an 11-hour slug of jetlag once you arrive. But there are few better cures for such time difference than the soft sands of Waikiki Beach – the sunshine strip which adorns the southern edge of the state capital Honolulu, on Oahu. And the sight of the volcanic titans Kilauea and Mauna Loa, on the “Big Island”, is sure to awaken the senses.

Borneo
The world’s third largest island is a natural haven, and so big that it is split between three countries. Indonesia and Brunei have their share of the landmass, but it is the Malaysian portion of Borneo that is of most interest to visitors – whether they take in Kuching (the capital of the state of Sarawak), hike up Mount Kinabalu in Sabah, or opt to doze on the beaches which fringe the west coast – or in the rainforest lodges cossetted in the interior.
Maldives
Let us deal in statistics. Some 1,192 islets and coral outcrops – stretched across 26 atolls and 35,000 square miles of water – make up this archipelago nation in the Indian Ocean. Very few of these soft shards veer away from the template – golden sands, swaying palm trees, azure shallows. If you want variety of terrain, do not visit the Maldives. If you want temperatures in the thirties Celsius and unrestrained beach luxury, you have chosen well.

They do not staff the fire station 24 hours a day. They are notified of an emergency call via a personal pager, which they carry with them when they are on duty. On-Call Firefighters will book themselves available for fire calls and, if a call comes in during the hours they have agreed to be on call, they must reach the fire station within 5 minutes of receiving the pager message, and we are after people who can offer daytime cover including weekends. www.derbys-fire.gov.uk

MOTORING REVIEW
FEBRUARY
IT’S EXCITING TO SEE A BRAND NEW MOTORHOME LAYOUT, BUT HOW DOES IT WORK IN REALITY? THE CHAUSSON 630 REVIEW, SEE THIS INNOVATIVE ’VAN FOR YOURSELF Overview If you want a ’van with wow factor, look no further! A regular winner of the innovation gong at Practical Motorhome’s Motorhome of the Year awards, French manufacturer Chausson has a reputation for pushing the boundaries of motorcaravan design. And the newfor-2017 Chausson 630 showcases yet more genuinely innovative thinking, in the form of individual drop-down twin single beds over the lounge. The 630 is one of 18 the Trigano brand is offering in the UK this year, 16 of which, including this, are low-profile coachbuilts. All have licence-friendly MTPLMs of no more than 3500kg. And all come with a seven-year warranty. Pricing for this model starts at £45,510 on the Ford Transit in entry-level Flash trim, or £46,480 on the Fiat Ducato. Add £3060 to get Welcome trim, seen here. On the road No matter which base vehicle you choose, you’ll get a Euro 6-compliant 130bhp engine paired with a sixspeed manual gearbox, a 2.0-litre unit in the Ford or a 2.3 in the Fiat. A driver’s airbag, ABS and ASR (antislipping) are all standard on both. In addition, ESP and a hill-start assist function come as standard on the Ford. Lounging & dining Enter via the offside habitation door and prepare to be wowed. The living space is bright, with especially snazzy upholstery, but this is a great space in which to spend time. A backlit mirror and hooks are on the left as you enter, as is a useful grabhandle. To your right is the generous parallel lounge. You could comfortably seat four, or swivel the cab seats so two more can join in. The space is inundated with light from the opening panoramic window over the cab, and from the side windows with attractive Roman blinds.
At night, a host of twinkling LEDs takes over, including some recessed in the underside of the drop-down beds, plus strips on the surrounding shelves and on the seat bases. And there’s more! At the rear of the nearside sofa is a surface that you could put a cushion on for an extra seat. It has drawer underneath it and a shelved cupboard on the wall behind it, so it won’t be comfortable for more than just perching. There’s another cupboard in the end of the offside sofa. The TV mounting point with all the relevant connections is by the fridge/freezer. Kitchen The fresh, modern design continues in the Chausson Welcome 630’s nearside kitchen. As you’d expect from a Continental ’van, it’s not exactly massive. As standard on 630s destined for the UK (which our test ’van wasn’t), you get a three-burner hob with a splashguard to the left and a grill or oven/grill, depending on the trim level. The circular stainless-steel sink has a sleek, square, chromed tap, but it’s not awfully wide. Opposite is a 175-litre fridge/freezer. Storage is good, starting with two overhead lockers. Under the sink are two deep drawers, to the right of which is a third, even deeper drawer, with a cutlery drawer above. And Thanks to the hob’s glass cover and the lift-up extension flap, there should just about be sufficient worktop space. You get a decent-sized opening window with a blind, accompanied by a quartet of square LED lights stacked up its left-hand side, as well as a ventilator/extractor. There’s a strip An unusual touch is the rail above the splashguard with hooks so you can hang tea towels or utensils here. Sleeping The show-stopping feature of the Chausson 630 has to be its individual drop-down twin single beds over the lounge. At the touch of a button, a bed motors down from the ceiling. You can drop one, or the other, or even both. For both you’ll need to lower the pedestal table, but if just the nearside one is deployed, you can fold half the table away and there’s still somewhere to rest a drink.

Washroom Across the rear of the habitation area lies the washroom, with a good-sized separate shower cubicle to your right. On the other side of the Chausson 630 is the toilet, a rectangular sink and a backlit mirror. Two overhead cupboards (one of which is shelved) and a third under the sink should provide ample storage. Storage With a user payload of 400kg, the Chausson 630 has a selection of inventive places to stash touring kit, some of which we’ve already mentioned. Instead of overhead lockers in the lounge, shelves run the full length of the walls. There’s also a big shelved storage space behind mirrored doors between the two halves of the washroom. This sits above a simply massive rear garage that has three doors, is heated and has a 12V socket. Equipment The Chausson 630 comes with diesel heating and LED lighting. There’s also a watertight, lockable door on the exterior that provides access to the water and electricity. As well as the already-mentioned items, it’s good to see the standard-fit twin USB ports over the cab, so you can keep your devices topped up on tour. Another thoughtful addition is the blue, built-in, floorlevel LED lighting. Not only does it look good, it will help you find your way around after dark, too.

The thrilling series four finale hits the big screen with exclusive additional content. Exclusive content starts at 20:45, the episode starts at 21:00. One of the most eagerly anticipated TV events of the year, the three-part fourth season of the BBC’s brilliant ‘Sherlock’ reaches its explosive climax with this ominously titled episode. Naturally, the Beeb is playing its cards very close to its chest when it comes to revealing plot details, so as to avoid spoiling the surprise. But that hasn’t stopped fans speculating on what fate has in store for Sherlock Holmes (Benedict Cumberbatch) and Dr. Watson (Martin Freeman). Cumberbatch and series co-creator Steven Moffat have also hinted in interviews that the Final Problem will prove to be pretty momentous. One thing is for certain: the best way to enjoy this edge-of-seat, feature-length climax is on the big screen at Cineworld in the company of equally excited fellow fans. As an extra bonus, it’s preceded by 15 minutes of additional content that’s exclusive to cinemagoers.

Gardening for FEBRUARY FEBRUARY Continue to dig over existing beds and borders, again incorporating as much organic matter as you can. Forking over not only helps prepare the soil for spring, it helps reduce pests by exposing them to hungry birds. Although temperatures should start to rise this month, there is still a risk of frost and even snow. Protect vulnerable plants, pots and taps from frost by wrapping insulation such as garden fleece around them and check pots and containers are raised off the ground if possible. Once the ground isn’t frozen, make new beds and borders - mark the shape with sand trickled from a bottle, remove the top layer of growing vegetation and dig the ground over, incorporating as much organic matter as possible. If you are making a bed in the lawn, remove the turf and stack it upside down somewhere out of the way. Remember not to let leaves accumulate around alpines - they will die if left damp for long. Cover bare patches around clumps with gritty compost to encourage regrowth. When the weather allows, carry on clearing paths, check walls (but avoid concreting until there is no chance of frost), clean and insulate greenhouses and ensure heaters are working properly. Even a little insulation will make a huge difference to your heating bill.
TREES, SHRUBS AND CLIMBERS
Plant bare-rooted shrubs and trees and container-grown climbers. As long as the ground isn’t frozen, February is a great month for planting as the soil will soon be warming up, encouraging new roots to grow and helping the plant to become established. Remember to plant climbers about 10” away from walls so they are not in a rain shadow. This is an important month for pruning - cut late summer and autumn flowering clematis down to 12” - seems draconian but they will quickly grow to their old height and produce flowers all the way up into the bargain! Attend to overgrown hardy evergreens, straggly hedges and wisteria if you haven’t already done so (cut all shoots coming from the permanent branches to 2-3 buds of the previous season’s growth - this will encourage the development of more flowering spurs). Prune deciduous coloured leaved shrubs grown for their foliage, like the purple-leaved elders - be brutal and leave literally a couple of shoots or buds on each stem unless you want a larger specimen, in which case leave a few lightly pruned stems to spring forth. In all cases feed your shorn plant with organic fertiliser and mulch with manure or compost for a great start to the growing season. Lastly, prune roses by taking out all dead, weak and crossing stems. Cut hybrid tea roses back to about 8” to an outward facing bud and cut floribundas (those with flowers in clusters) down to 10-12”.
58
LAWNS
Keep off the lawn as much as possible whilst it is still wet - damage to waterlogged lawns is easily inflicted. If, towards the end of the month, the weather turns dry and mild, the lawn is firm and the grass is starting to look a little shaggy, give it a very gentle mow with the blades on the highest setting - don’t be tempted if conditions are wet! Also, if you are planning a new lawn, now is probably the earliest you could start preparing the ground for seeding or laying turf. Ask for advice in your local garden centre if you are unsure as to how to begin!
FLOWERS AND CONTAINERS
Buy and plant container-grown snowdrops - add some compost to the soil plus a sprinkling of bonemeal and plant them slightly deeper than they were in the pot. Pot up lily bulbs to flower in early summer in barely moist compost and keep somewhere light and frost free. Sow sweet peas under a cloche or in the greenhouse for a cheery reminder that spring is on the way. Brighten up a dull month with pansies, violas, primroses and heathers - pansies densely packed make for a truly striking display. If the weather really does turn dry, do remember pots and containers will need watering, especially if they are near a wall and in a sheltered position.
Clean and repair your garden tools, book the lawn mower in for a service and check garden furniture for any rot.
