BEGINNINGS WHO?, WHAT?, WHERE? & WHY?
INSIDE BOLSOVER THANK YOU
Firstly we want to say a huge thank you to all our readers, but more importantly to the people that have had the faith in us to deliver a quality publication, our advertisers, without them the magazine wouldn’t have even started and would still just be a day dream. As we move into September and our fourth edition we could not be happier with the way that the magazine is growing. Not only is the magazine becoming a more established and recognised publication, but our social media channels are also strengthening and we are now looking at getting our website developed to bolster the whole package.
THE BEGINNINGS
The Inside Bolsover magazine as most people probably already know is part of a much bigger group, we have 3 sister editions. Inside Lincs, which was the maiden magazine and where the founder Nigel England started the ‘Inside’ group over 6 years ago.
4
Inside Flintshire was then started with the guidance of Nigel by Reg White over in North Wales 3 years ago. Reg has taken Nigel’s winning formula and now has 2 successful publications. David England, Nigel’s brother started the third publication Inside Lincs 2 this year in June, he is now onto his fourth edition and this is growing on a monthly basis along side Inside Lincs magazine to become the best publications for their area. Then there is us, Inside Bolsover. We started in June this year after the editor Jamie Snarski had a conversation with the self proclaimed ‘Godfather’ of the group, Nigel. At first it was a bit of a passing conversation about him maybe starting up a magazine. Jamie had always wanted to start his own business, but, like anyone that has made the leap found it quite hard to get past the fear. In the end Jamie bit the bullet, handed in his notice and jumped in with two feet!
The first magazine went out and we thought we had won a war, unfortunately we hadn’t even started one, it was the beginning and we hadn’t even scratched the surface of potential that the magazine will achieve. Since the first edition, which started at 36 pages, we have slowly built up our profile and magazine page count. We went out in July with 40 pages, August with 44 pages and this month made a another jump up to 48 pages! The dream is now starting to feel very real! To backup the popularity of the magazine we are now also gaining a good following on Facebook with over 350 likes in the space of 3 months, it’s pretty amazing! We could not be happier!
FAMILY
As a final note we wanted our readers to know that one way or another all the editors of each magazine are family related, we know that because of this we will continue to grow as we all move forward together!

COMPUTER SAFETY INTERNET TROLLS Trolls or Keyboard warriors and how to deal with them! The Internet is without doubt a great invention! Unfortunately, no one so far has been able to develop an anti-troll device that will help to make it a more civilized place. You might have come across this beast called the Internet troll too, in the white of comment boxes, on social networks, and on discussion boards. On the web, a troll is nothing but a pest who thrives in the anonymity that it provides. The Urban Dictionary has quite a few definitions lined up. But – one who posts a deliberately provocative message to a newsgroup or message board with the intention of causing maximum disruption and argument - is the most point blank. So, how do you take the war to the Internet trolls? First, by recognising a troll from a guy who just wants to start a one-off flame war. Putting a Troll In The Crosshairs - Internet troll Fortunately, it’s easy to spot an Internet troll from a distance. They have their own sets of socially unacceptable behaviors. Trolls generally use provocative and confrontational language. A clever one will mix it up with relevant and friendly posts. Trolls hardly ever stick to the topic; they beat around the bush with the intention to confuse the reader. Trolls of the subtle variety flag off their attack with innocent questions. You will often find them dressed up as new members of forums and chat rooms. Trolls lack understanding of a topic. They will not respond with a proper answer to a proper question. Dealing with internet trolls - Trolls (especially the clever variants) use catch phrases to win sympathy. For instance, they may portray themselves as victims or specially challenged. Trolls use web addresses or fictitious online identities that lead to dead ends. Trolls may make desperate efforts to make themselves liked. Sugar coated responses or overt-flattering comments are signature troll moves.
12
There are different types of trolls. Most are hit-andmiss and are far easier to deal with. Some are more strategic in the way they embed themselves online so as to cause maximum mayhem with minimum fuss. Identifying an internet troll is half the battle one. You can only count on your experience to get one early before you are baited by them. Now, comes the relatively easy part of dealing with these internet trolls. Surefire Ways Of Dealing With Internet Trolls Thankfully, you don’t have to call 911 to deal with Internet trolls. No destruction of property has been reported yet. Effective troll management calls for equal parts of caution and common sense. Here are a few guideposts to follow. Avoidance is the best policy: If you can catch them shooting their mouths off, totally ignore remarks left by trolls. Don’t feed the trolls should be stuck up on a yellow sticky always Avoid arguments: If you do get on a one-to-one with someone you suspect to be a troll, keep your remarks to an absolute minimum. State your facts and move on. Put the ball in their court. By the second remark or so, a troll would have identified himself. Don’t let them flatter to deceive: There is a high chance that a troll will pay a compliment or two to ingratiate himself before he starts his attack. This is a tough one as there are many real admirers who do sugar coat their comments. Ask For Supporting Data: To net a troll in the antispam net, you can ask for data that can quickly verified like an email address or domain name. Genuine commentators usually have an online persona to back themselves. The power of the webmaster: You can use blacklists and whitelists to separate the bad from the good. IP addresses can be tracked and persistent attacks from an IP or a range of IPs can be effectively blocked. Information taken from www.makeuseof.com

Newstead Abbey Newstead Abbey, Nottinghamshire, was formerly an Augustinian priory. Converted to a domestic home following the Dissolution of the Monasteries, it is now best known as the ancestral home of Lord Byron. Heralded by many as the greatest romantic poet of his time, Lord Byron lived at Newstead Abbey at various times from the autumn of 1808 to the autumn of 1814. Visitors may visit the Abbey to discover the Byron collection. The collection includes: • Objects and furniture which belonged to the poet • Letters written by Byron • Manuscripts and portraits of Byron, his family and friends • The poet’s magnificent giltwood bed, which Byron brought with him from his student rooms in Cambridge when he moved into Newstead Abbey • Byron’s very own pistol and the desk at which he wrote much of his poetry
The Abbey was founded as a monastic house in the late 12th century, and to this day the house retains much of its medieval character. The most famous survival is the iconic West Front of the church that dates from the late 13th century and is now a scheduled ancient monument. Inside the house the medieval cloisters, Chapter House (now the Chapel) and a collection of medieval stone carvings and manuscripts enable visitors to discover the Abbey’s early history. Lord Byron sold the Abbey in 1818 to Thomas Wildman, who had inherited a fortune from plantations owned by his family in Jamaica. It remained in his family until 1861 when it was purchased by William Frederick Webb, an African explorer. The Abbey contains many items that belonged to the families who lived in the house throughout the Victorian period. View the splendid Victorian room settings and see the furniture, paintings, letters, deeds and diaries of those who once lived there. Of particular interest are the Victorian photo albums showing the Abbey, its interiors and its gardens, as they were more than a century ago. The house also features a collection of items that span the centuries, from when Newstead Abbey first became a private house, right up to the present day. It includes paintings, objects, letters, maps and photographs associated with the estate, including a collection of the eighteenth century views of Newstead Abbey by artist Pieter Tillemans. Visitors can linger over displays and reading material in the Gothic Revival Library, or marvel at the expansive panelling in the Great Hall, all reputed to have come from a single oak tree.

Practical Car and Van Rental Chesterfield was proud to supporting Karl with a fundraising bike ride from Skegness to Chesterfield in aid to raise funds for Lilia to afford expensive Therapy. Lilia was born without a heartbeat. After being resuscitated for 10 minutes she came back from the dead, her determination being a sign of things to come. Lilia has been deprived of oxygen for at least 10 minutes and was pronounced HIE Grade 2. She began to miss milestones from a early age and was diagnosed with quadriplegic cerebral palsy at 5 month old. This means she is unable to sit, crawl or walk independently. Intensive therapy could help her development and independence for the future. Lilia loves to be around her friends and cousins and wants desperately to join in. Her parents are committed to her having as many experiences as possible, and not missing out on anything due to her condition. Lilia would benefit from a new therapy called 'Therasuit' therapy. This is a 3 week course of daily 4 hour therapy while wearing a space suit, as well as having oxygen therapy to help heal the brain. This will cost in the region of £10,000 for one 3 week session. Lilia had her first 3 week 'Therasuit' therapy session in Feb 2016. This therapy we hope to do every year and we really do appreciate your kind donations. Please donate to help Lilia afford her therapy, You can do so online on crowdfunding.justgiving.com/ karl-johnson or call into Practical Car and Van Rental Chesterfield.

JDS Installations is a Chesterfield based family business run by brothers Jamie and Darren Smith, who specialise in bathroom and wetroom installations. We are not salesman, but a caring and trustworthy company who pride ourselves on our customer’s satisfaction. We back this clichÊ statement up by not accepting the final 40% of the final balance until our customers are entirely happy with our workmanship. We have no expensive showroom over heads so we pass the savings directly onto our customers. We also install en-suites, cloak rooms and all aspects of porcelain & ceramic tiling. Every project we take on we put our heart and soul into it, from the initial meeting of the potential customer, the designing of the project and right through until the completion of the Installation. All the work is carried out from start to finish entirely by us as we do not subcontract several tradesmen, therefore reducing time delays on your project and minimalising disruption within your home. All our previous customers said that they would have no hesitation in recommending JDS Installations to anyone which means the world to us as we know we have done our job right from start to finish. JDS Installations are installing showroom quality bathrooms & wetrooms throughout Bolsover, Chesterfield, Worksop, Mansfield & all surrounding areas.

Testimonial to JDS Installations
“We have two main objectives within our company these are, leaving our customers happy to enjoy their new bathroom, by producing our customer their own unique showroom quality bathroom
Earlier this year we visited our relatives and were impressed by the quality of the work carried out by JDS with their bathroom. We have been disappointed with contractors in the past. However we are very pleased with the work carried out by Darren and Jamie, they have transformed our shower room. During the initial meetings, they listened and designed and bathroom based on our requirements, presenting samples of materials and we had the opportunity to make any adjustments. Darren and Jamie are enthusiastic and passionate about their work. Customer satisfaction is highly important to them. We knew exactly what the price was beforehand, the work was completed on time and the quality is exceptional! Thank you JDS. Best Regards Mr and Mrs Wells 21

MOTORING REVIEW SEPTEMBER
2016 MERCEDES BENZ AMG GT & GTS Handcrafted horsepower! Seamless thrust! Seemingly endless!
Handcrafted AMG 4.0L “dry sump” V8s thrust power into a new era. Twin turbos mounted inside the “V” force-feed massive boost to each Direct Injected cylinder, and deliver 60 mph in 3.9 seconds for the 456hp AMG GT, or just 3.7 seconds for the 503-hp AMG GT S. And its ample torque is unleashed from the get-go with a growling exhaust note.
Perfect proportions, with an extra portion of power. The tautly drawn shape of the AMG GT S is sculpted to conquer wind and weight, and capture stares and hearts. Its proportions celebrate its rear-wheel-drive power and ideally balanced chassis. Every brilliant detail combines purpose with poise. The result is at once timeless and trendsetting, and a sports car that seduces your gaze to linger. Driving controls, designed for driver control.
24
The AMG GT S cockpit envelops your body, heightens your senses, and connects with your driving instincts. The dramatically wide console and crisp instruments are inspired by the precision of aviation. The thick steering wheel and intuitive controls put you in command and at ease. Deeply contoured AMG Performance seats support your every move.
Innovative safety: An eye to the future, to look out for yours. Standard COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST PLUS uses radar to continually monitor tra c ahead. If it detects that you’re approaching a slower vehicle too quickly, it alerts you to brake. It can even start braking for you, to help lessen a possible collision. ATTENTION ASSIST® keeps its “eyes” on you, alerting you if it senses you’re getting drowsy.
AMG DYNAMIC SELECT: A fresh twist on total control. With AMG DYNAMIC SELECT, a twist of a console knob ne-tunes the car’s character. Each mode adapts the throttle maps, gear changes, and more to your driving desires, from Comfort to Sport+. The modes can also tune in the available adaptive suspension and AMG Performance exhaust. An Individual mode lets you custom-tailor a mode all your own. Touchpad COMAND: Easy to reach, easy to grasp. An intuitive touchpad and sleek yet sizable 8.4” screen present your entertainment, navigation and available Internet-based apps via multi- nger gestures and animated displays. Set between the crisp analog gauges, another screen o ers an exclusive AMG menu, so you can keep an eye on turbo boost, oil temperature, speed and gear selection.

The aim of forward focused therapy is to relieve emotional distress and help you move on as swiftly as possible. I am trained in highly effective techniques to deal quickly with past trauma – in many cases this only takes a few sessions. The therapy I use is always positive and forward focused. I will not be asking you to root around and analyse the past, or attempt to dredge up real or imagined miserable memories. I aim to help you identify any unmet emotional needs and to rediscover and develop your own resources in order to get those needs met. I will teach you relaxation techniques so that you can think more clearly, find solutions, and develop skills and strategies NOW to help you change unhelpful patterns of behaviour with the minimum of fuss. Holiday Review
Ibiza Sun-kissed, beach-bejewelled, pine-clad island
An insider’s guide to Ibiza, the golden isle, all the things to do, including why to go, when to go and what you should know before you travel there and explore the area.
WHY GO?
Although it is renowned for having some of the best nightclubs in the world, the island also has an absolutely beautiful coastline with dozens of tiny coves to discover, not to mention some of the most stylish hotels in the Mediterranean. Exploring in autumn and winter, you get much more of an idea of real life in Ibiza, particularly if you delve into the island’s rich history too.
WHEN TO GO?
Although the season gets going in May and winds down in October, the islands are beautiful in early spring when the almond blossom is out. Outside the hottest months of July and August, all the Balearics are good for activity holidays, whether easy or more challenging, with plenty to see if you are interested in plants or birds. Sunshine is not guaranteed, however, and you may well hit a rainy patch in late autumn.
WHERE TO GO?
For a week of wild partying, stay in the lively resorts of Playa d’en Bossa or San Antonio. Santa Eulalia
30
is more laidback with plenty of waterfront bars and restaurants and good shops. For a cultural fix, explore the hilltop Dalt Vila in Ibiza Town, then slide into a pavement café to soak up the boho vibe. Both coast and countryside are beautiful in spring and autumn, when you might want to get a more natural high with a walking or cycling holiday.
LOCAL LAWS AND ETIQUETTE
Travel with a couple of photocopies of your European Health Insurance Card and passport, as you will need them for any medical treatment. Ibiza travel guide You will need a car if you want to get to the quieter beaches or explore the interior. You must carry your passport with you by law. You often have to show your passport when paying by debit or credit card. It is not usual to share tables, even in fast-food joints Most bars won’t mind if you go in just to use the toilet – los servicios. Although they certainly like a drink, it is rare to see Spaniards rolling drunk in public.

HOUSE TO HOME CREATIVE WAYS TO SPICE UP AN UNUSED FIREPLACE
Just because winter’s over, doesn’t mean a fireplace’s job is done. It’s easy to forget about your hearth if it’s out of action but decorating it can help to add personality to the room. 1. Show off its shape Try to keep the look cohesive by choosing accessories that echo a single theme or colour and make sure the pieces you pick complement the style of your mantel. Take advantage of this extra space with these five simple ideas. If your fireplace is heavily detailed or it’s an unusual shape, try making the most of its character by emphasising its design quirks. Here, the hearth has a boxy look that oozes Art Deco, making it ideal for pairing with other angular accessories, such as tall candle lanterns and handy square wirework storage baskets, as well as a table to help vary the heights. Instead of wire baskets, you could try a couple of vases, glasses, or even bottles filled with wildflowers, complemented by a classic pillar candle or two in a simple hurricane jar or lantern. Don’t forget to take
it from day to night by lighting the candles in the evening for an elegant, soft flickering glow. 2. Channel country chic Texture’s often overlooked when decorating smaller areas but getting a good mix of tactile accessories is just as crucial as in a larger space – especially effective if you have smooth, glossy tiles. Rustic materials, such as rattan and timber, create visual and physical contrast and look fantastic when layered up. Finish the look by adding a few bursts of colour with fresh spring flowers in an oversized vase or even potted bulbs.
4. Set the mood Deep colours are bang on-trend but need contrast to shine. If you have a black fireplace, try pairing it with reflective textures, such as glowing bronze metallics and warm copper, and some jewel tones with flowers. Add a few different floral displays, too. A few stems in bud vases are easy to trim from a larger bouquet or you could give the look an Oriental twist by floating fallen flower heads in a decorative bowl of water.
3. Create a warm welcome guests might huddle around your fireside in the winter but even when it’s no longer a source of heat, you can make your hearth just as inviting. Try popping a chair complete with a comfy cushion next to your fireplace, and add clusters of pretty decorative pieces such as flowers, vases and candles. Smaller items that might otherwise sit on your mantle can still be included – make sure they’re kept at the front of the display to prevent them getting lost.

Restoration complete! Bolsover Civic Society has restored a part of the town’s mining history. The winding wheel and coal truck from Bolsover colliery were erected at the former pit entrance on Station Road following the colliery’s closure in 1993. Twenty plus years of weathering had resulted in a need for refurbishment so the Society took the initiative to launch a fund raising project to restore damaged metalwork and repaint the whole. With financial assistance from Derbyshire County Council, Bolsover District Council and Old Bolsover Town Council the work to restore an important part of Bolsover’s proud mining inheritance has now been achieved. Special thanks to Gary Webley for repainting the truck and Dan Webb for the signwork. Also, thanks to Stephen Cotton for volunteering his time to put the sign up.

He is also a vice-president of the International Association of Athletics Federations and a pro-chancellor of Loughborough University, where he had been an undergraduate.
5. KELLY HOLMES Sport: Athletics
Olympic medals: Three Two Gold . One Bronze Other medals: Nine Two Gold . Five Silver Two Bronze Why?: Dame Kelly Holmes won gold in the 800m and 1500m at Athens in 2004, although she had not won any medals at her first Olympics in 1996 following a couple of years of injury problems. She set British records in many events and still holds the records over the 600m, 800m, 1000m and 1500m. She won BBC Sports Personality of the Year in 2004 and said it was “the biggest sporting honour your country can give you.” Where is she now?: Kelly was made a dame in the New Year Honours in 2005 and retired from athletics in December of that year. She has taken part in On Camp With Kelly events to help train more junior athletes. Kelly also made a surprise appearance presenting sports news on television for BBC London, standing in for the regular presenter. Despite speculation that this was the start of a broadcasting career, it remained a one-off guest slot. In May 2009, she became president of Commonwealth Games England and in 2010 was inducted into the England Athletics Hall of Fame.

Where is he now?: Coe retired in 1990, becoming Conservative MP for Falmouth and Camborne from 1992 to 1997, when he lost his seat in the General Election. He was made a life peer in 2000 and briefly returned to politics as William Hague’s chief of staff. Gardening
IN SEPTEMBER SEPTEMBER
Get your compost going by buying a compost bin or building a partially enclosed and easily accessible area for a heap. It is essential to replace the goodness in soil and autumn produces quantities of garden waste that will add invaluable organic richness back into your soil next spring.
WATERING
Should September turn into an Indian summer, remember to keep watering thoroughly once or twice a week rather than little and often. Containers and hanging baskets need watering every day. For recently planted large shrubs or trees, leave a hose trickling around the base for an hour. The same goes for established plants in dry periods - camellias, rhododendrons, azaleas and hydrangeas will abort next season’s flowers if they get too dry. Ensure trees or shrubs planted in the last couple of years on lawns or in areas of rough grass have a circle of clear earth around them this MUST be kept clear or grass will prevent essential moisture getting through. Mulching with bark or compost will help.
WEEDING
Keep weeding; most perennial weeds are susceptible to weedkiller this month and systemic weedkillers will carry on working throughout the winter. Also clear any debris and diseased material from your garden. Pests and diseases that overwinter in your garden will reappear next spring with a vengeance so get rid of them now. Burn diseased material and put the rest of your garden rubbish (apart from woody stems) in the compost.

TREES & SHRUBS
Conifers and evergreens Plant and move conifers and evergreens - dig as large a root ball as you can and wrap in hessian to move with minimum disturbance. Plant to the same depth as before, firm in well and water generously. If the new location is windy or exposed, protect the plant with a windbreak to reduce water loss from the leaves through evaporation.
HEDGES
Clip back hedges such as privet, hawthorn, beech, yew, thuja, leylandii and lonicera before mid September.
ROSES
Keep dead-heading roses regularly. Prune climbing roses once the flowers have faded - cut back sideshoots from the main framework to a couple of buds. Remove any diseased, spindly, old and unproductive stems and tie new shoots onto supports at their base.
in preparation for winter; do not use spring lawn feed as this encourages grass to grow and it may not survive the cold. After all this your lawn will look dreadful, but fear not, it will benefit enormously from the regime. Repair bumps, hollows, bald patches and broken edges too.
NEW LAWNS
Now is the time to start making a new lawn. Good preparation is vital whether you are laying turf or sowing seed: remove weeds and stones, dig over thoroughly, adding organic matter and fertiliser, rake smooth, firm by walking up and down and rake again at right angles, repeating the raking and firming process until the area is flat and the surface is a fine crumb texture. Sow seed according to the packet instructions and lay turf in a brick pattern so no joints are in line. Water well and keep off for 4 to 5 weeks.
LAVENDER
Lightly trim over lavender bushes with hedging shears. More drastic pruning to rejuvenate old plants should be left till March or April.
LAWNS
Established lawns: Reduce the frequency of mowing now and towards the end of the month. Scarify (rake out the old dead grass and moss) by hand (hard work!) or with a machine, spike to improve drainage again either by hand with a garden fork or with a machine, add a top dressing of soil/ sand/compost mixed according to your soil type (ask for advice at your local garden centre if you are unsure) and feed with autumn lawn feed. This low-nitrogen feed strengthens grass
Gardening Tips Remember to add a variety of different materials; spent vegetable plants are ideal, but NEVER add diseased or pest-ridden material to your compost heap - it will nurture whatever villain you are trying to eliminate with loving care!

BLAIR WITCH
THE WILD LIFE
A group of college students venture into the Black Hills Forest in Maryland to uncover the mysteries surrounding the disappearance of James’ sister who many believe is connected to the legend of the Blair Witch. At first the group is hopeful, especially when a pair of locals offer to act as guides through the dark and winding woods, but as the endless night wears on, the group is visited by a menacing presence. Slowly, they begin to realize the legend is all too real and more sinister than they could have imagined.
On a tiny exotic island, Tuesday, an outgoing parrot lives with his quirky animal friends in paradise. However, Tuesday can’t stop dreaming about discovering the world. After a violent storm, Tuesday and his friends wake up to find a strange creature on the beach: Robinson Crusoe. Tuesday immediately views Crusoe as his ticket off the island to explore new lands. Likewise, Crusoe soon realizes that the key to surviving on the island is through the help of Tuesday and the other animals. It isn’t always easy at first, as the animals don’t speak “human.” Slowly but surely, they all start living together in harmony, until one day, when their comfortable life is overturned by two savage cats, who wish to take control of the island. A battle ensues between the cats and the group of friends but Crusoe and the animals soon discover the true power of friendship up against all odds (even savage cats).
