DECEMBER

Holiday Review

Finding Father Christmas FATHER CHRISTMAS

How to find the best trip to Lapland. Father Christmas, as any child can tell you, lives with his wife and a gaggle of elves in a snow-covered cabin. Take the festive trip of your child’s dreams – from Santa to snow, our experts have it covered. Sophie Butler, our consumer expert, explains the range of Father Christmas trips on the market, giving practical advice on everything from location to accommodation. And Sally Peck and Henry Druce put two of the best Lapland trips to meet Father Christmas to the test. What is the best way to meet Father Christmas? I want to take my six-year-old daughter for a Father Christmas experience in Finland in December. Is it better to stay near Rovaniemi and visit Father Christmas Village or SantaPark, or go further north to Levi or Yllas for a traditional Finnish experience? My concern is that the first option will be too commercialised and busy because of all the day trips. But on the other hand, I am worried the Christmas experience further north won’t be full enough. Finnish Lapland is a good place to visit for a magical, festive atmosphere but you are right to be wary of over-commercialisation. There are new programmes introduced every year but some of these can suffer from being impersonal, so you need to book well in advance for the best, small-group trips. Any trip to Lapland will probably involve an encounter with one of Father Christmas’s reindeer. The trick is to examine every detail of the itinerary, from how long

10

you spend with Santa, which activities are included and how the gifts are organised. Before unveiling the idea to your children, bear in mind that these holidays can be expensive. Expect to pay at least £2,000 for a family of four on a two- or three-night stay in a log cabin or hotel, including flights, transfers and meals. Specialist tour operators offering private meetings with Father Christmas and a more authentic experience generally base their itineraries in more remote parts of the region. Alongside the obligatory visit to Father Christmas, you can find Christmas-themed packages that usually include a variety of snow-based activities (sleigh rides, snowmobiling) either included in the price or as an extra. Inghams (inghams.co.uk) has four-night Father Christmas breaks to Levi or Yllas, while Santa’s Lapland (santaslapland.com; reviewed below) uses family-friendly hotels or log cabins near Saariselkä (Europe’s northernmost holiday resort). Try also Nordic Experience (nordicexperience.co.uk), Transun (transun.co.uk) and Canterbury Travel (santa-holidays.com). Remember that the climate can be harsh. Throughout the seven-month winter, you can expect little more than five hours of sunlight with temperatures dropping well below freezing and sometimes as low as -20 to -40C. But during daylight hours the sun often shines, the air is still and very dry, so as long as you dress properly, the cold is perfectly bearable.

Make sure your insurance covers you for winter sports particularly riskier ones such as snowmobiling and, although operators will provide thermal over clothing, ensure you take plenty of warm layers. For the most competitive prices, look at the programmes offered by the big tour operators. Thomson (thomson.co.uk), Thomas Cook (thomascook.com), Monarch (monarch.co.uk) and Cosmos (cosmos.co.uk) offer Santa tours and often have deals available for specific departure dates, free child places or for last-minute availability. The experts’ favourite trips to meet Father Christmas Why every family must visit Father Christmas in Lapland, before it’s too late: The expert travels to the Finnish Lapland with her daughter for a fairytale adventure involving mischievous elves, reindeer sleigh rides and lots of singing. Canterbury Travel’s Magical Interlude includes a thrilling zoom through the woods with huskies - as part of the search for Father Christmas. For slightly older children, or those more focused on the winter sports, follow Henry Druce’s family and opt for a Santa’s Lapland trip.

Bolsover Bolsover is a small town near Chesterfield, Derbyshire, England. It is 145 miles from London, 18 miles from Sheffield, 26 miles from Nottingham and 54 miles from Manchester. It is the main town in the Bolsover district. The civil parish for the town is called Old Bolsover. It includes the town and the New Bolsover model village, along with Carr Vale, Shuttlewood, Stanfree, Oxcroft and Whaley. Bolsover, along with several nearby villages, is situated in the north east of the county of Derbyshire. It is the main town in the District of Bolsover, which is an electoral constituency and part of Derbyshire.

The origin of the name is uncertain. It may be derived from Bula’s Ofer or Boll’s Ofer, respectively the Old English for Bull’s Ridge or Boll’s Ridge, alternatively in the 1650s it was referred to as ‘Bolsouer’. Bolsover is mentioned in Domesday Book, named as Belesovre, where it is described as the property of William Peverel. The description refers to the villans, the ploughs, 8 acres of meadow and woodland pasture, which is given as two leagues by a league. William was possibly an illegitimate son of William the Conqueror. Bolsover became the seat of the Peverel family, and in the 12th century a keep was built. The present castle was erected in 1613. In 1657 William Cavendish produced the book ‘La Methode et Invention nouvelle de Dresser les Chevaux’ which he produced in exile in Antwerp during the Cromwellian Protectorate. This was translated in 1743 to ‘A General System of Horsemanship in All its Branches’ this covered the dressage of horses, at his ‘Bolsouer’, Welbeck and Antwerp stables and there are etched prints existing showing the ‘Monsieur le Marquis a Cheval’ amongst many other views of the town. The etches are attributed to Abraham van Diepenbeeck a pupil of Van Dyck.

The district of Bolsover is notable for three sites of historical importance: Bolsover Castle, Creswell Crags and Creswell Model Village, an example of early twentieth century design from the Model village movement.

ROM - read only memory. This is memory that does not get changed. Hardware - the solid parts of a computer, like monitors, fans, CPU, etc. CPU - central processing unit, name for processor. GHz - gigahertz. Used to describe the speed of a processor. Some processors are capable of doing more than one thing at once, as they have multiple “cores”, so a bigger number is not necessarily better. The bigger the GHz number, the faster it runs and the more energy it uses.

Computer jargon means words to do with computers and surrounding topics. Knowing what these words mean can help people know more about computers. Most people use these words to discuss computer ideas, but some people use these words to impress others. Some examples of jargon are: Disk - a place to store data. Data - information stored on a computer. The amount of data that is stored on a disk is measured with the following terms: Bit - the smallest data unit, can either be a “0” or a “1.”

USB - universal serial bus, a method used to plug computer tools into a machine. Email - electronic mail. WWW - World Wide Web, part of the Internet. Broadband - a fast internet connection. WiFi - wireless fidelity. Connect to a network wirelessly. Plug & Play - a function from the OS that autorecognizes any change to the hardware of the computer. OS - operating system. The main program that controls all the computer functions, it calls other programs.

Nybble - there are 4 bits in a Nybble.

Program - set of data that tells the processor what to do and call for in the rest of PC.

Byte - there are 8 bits in a byte. One byte is enough to hold one single letter or number of text.

Software - another name for program.

Kilobyte - there are 1024 Bytes in a Kilobyte. Megabyte - there are 1024 Kilobytes in a Megabyte. Gigabyte - there are 1024 Megabytes in a Gigabyte. Terabyte - there are 1024 Gigabytes in a Terabyte. Petabyte - there are 1024 Terabytes in a Petabyte.

Installation - the way a software sets the place for itself in a computer. Virus - bad software made to mess up a computer or destroy data; nothing good comes from it. Hacker - people who search flaws in the way computers work. They can use their knowledge for evil, too.

Note that some people and some companies use a different version of these numbers, replacing 1024 with 1000 in each of the above numbers.

JARGON

Upload - to put data on somewhere. For example, on the internet or a website, “I uploaded my pictures to Facebook.”

(Noun) Specialist vocabulary for a particular subject or profession.

MOTORING REVIEW DECEMBER

2016 RENAULT MEGANE

The new, fifth-generation Renault Megane might be built in Northern Spain and its maker might be at war with the French government over voting control of the company, but it is still resolutely, to the very tip of its Gallic beak, une automobile française. The Megane’s fortunes have waned considerably since the early part of the century when it rode high on the hog. In 2005, when Carlos Ghosn took over the top job at this state-owned French car maker, he complained bitterly about Renault’s sales performance and head designer Patrick le Quément’s designs, even though the Megane was Europe’s second-best selling family hatchback, with total sales that year of 320,000 across all the derivatives. “Sales are a little bit low,” admits Thomas Brient, Renault’s marketing head. Brient says that downsizing trends, the influx of premium marques into the sector (Audi A3, BMW 1-series, Mercedes A-class), plus the phenomenal success of the VW Golf and the leakage of buyers into SUVs explains how the Megane’s star fell. So there are high hopes for the new version of a car that we used to associate with a certain joie de vivre in this sector. First impression is that the new Megane looks like the old Megane

28

and it does, sort of, until you turn the key and the daytime running lights make it look like an explosion in an LED factory. Laurens van den Acker, Renault’s design head, certainly knows about street theatre, to the extent that the rear LED strips resemble a fairground version of Salvador Dali’s moustaches. It is good looking, in a hunkered down manner largely because it’s one of the widest cars in the class. Step inside and the lively style dampens as fast as a hose on a busker. Renault, fixated with the Golf, has chosen charcoalgrey sobriety, soft-touch ubiquity and stultifying interior design details, which simply don’t match the extroverted exterior. The central touchscreen comes as a 7-inch landscape, or 8.5-inch portrait format and is finished in the sort of black-and-white style made popular with HiFi in the Seventies. However, the control logic seems more intuitive than other Renaults so you don’t (quite) get that gutwrenching feeling when you lose the navigation screen that you may never find your way back. There’s also a host of more trivial functions which change the dashboard background colours or change the engine note, plus you can download further apps into the system. The technology is good, with all the usual safety systems such as blindspot and lane-departure warnings, emergency autonomous braking, trafficsign recognition and a rearview camera. Two versions are available, the £25,000, 202bhp, 1.6-litre GT with seven-speed auto gearbox on optional 20-inch wheels, and the £23,500, 128bhp, 1.6-litre six-speed manual on 18s. While both cars use a relatively basic twistbeam rear suspension design, the GT has Renault’s four-

wheel steering system, which turns the front and rear wheels in opposite directions at low speed for improved manoeuvrability and in the same directions at high speeds for improved stability. In that respect the diesel only partially delivers. It rides the poor surfaces of Portugal’s B-roads well, but is never entirely at ease, almost as though the damping is set too stiffly. The chassis just doesn’t “breath” over bumps like the Golf or the new Vauxhall Astra. The steering weights up progressively and reassuringly, even if there’s no real feel, and there’s a lot of grip, but this isn’t a car that you’d drive hard for the joy of it. The 1.6-litre diesel is quiet and powerful, but it vibrates unpleasantly through the steering and gear lever. The GT petrol is retuned with 40 per cent faster steering and revised suspension, and it certainly feels more eager, with a tug on the big steering wheel paddles that let you take control of its dual clutch auto gearbox revealing more power and revs.

Recipe of the month DECEMBER Gingerbread cake with caramel biscuit icing This Christmas bake is covered in a decadent icing, finished with gingerbread biscuits and dusted with desiccated coconut ‘snow’

Method 1.Measure the milk and treacle into a saucepan. Bring to a gentle simmer and stir until combined, then set aside to cool. Grease 3 x 20cm loose-bottomed cake tins with a little oil and line the bases with baking parchment. Heat oven to 180C/160C fan/gas 4. 2.Mix the dry ingredients together with a large whisk; if there are any large lumps of sugar, squeeze these through your fingers until you have an even, sandytextured mixture. 3.In a jug, whisk the oil, buttermilk, eggs, rum and vanilla. Add the milk and treacle mixture, and mix well. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry, and whisk into a smooth batter. Divide between the tins and bake for 25-30 mins until a skewer inserted into the centre of the cakes comes out clean. Cool the cakes in their tins for 10 mins, then transfer to a wire rack, peel off the parchment and leave to cool completely. 4.To make the icing, put the butter and half the icing sugar in a large bowl. Mash together roughly with a spatula, then whizz with an electric hand whisk until smooth. Add

extract and biscuit spread. Mix again until smooth and set aside. Use the remaining icing to stack the cakes and cover the entire outside in a thin layer. Chill the cake for 30 mins and the remaining icing for 20 mins. 5.When the icing on the cake is firm, remove it from the fridge and use the remaining icing to cover the cake. Smooth the sides using a palette knife, but leave peaks and dips on top for your snow scene. Top the cake generously with desiccated coconut, a dusting of sieved icing sugar and some edible glitter, if you like, then decorate the top and sides with gingerbread shapes.

JDS Installations is a Chesterfield based family business run by brothers Jamie and Darren Smith, who specialise in bathroom and wetroom installations. We are not salesman, but a caring and trustworthy company who pride ourselves on our customer’s satisfaction. We back this clichÊ statement up by not accepting the final 40% of the final balance until our customers are entirely happy with our workmanship. We have no expensive showroom over heads so we pass the savings directly onto our customers. We also install en-suites, cloak rooms and all aspects of porcelain & ceramic tiling. Every project we take on we put our heart and soul into it, from the initial meeting of the potential customer, the designing of the project and right through until the completion of the Installation. All the work is carried out from start to finish entirely by us as we do not subcontract several tradesmen, therefore reducing time delays on your project and minimalising disruption within your home. All our previous customers said that they would have no hesitation in recommending JDS Installations to anyone which means the world to us as we know we have done our job right from start to finish. JDS Installations are installing showroom quality bathrooms & wetrooms throughout Bolsover, Chesterfield, Worksop, Mansfield & all surrounding areas.

Testimonial to JDS Installations

“We have two main objectives within our company these are, leaving our customers happy to enjoy their new bathroom, by producing our customer their own unique showroom quality bathroom

Earlier this year we visited our relatives and were impressed by the quality of the work carried out by JDS with their bathroom. We have been disappointed with contractors in the past. However we are very pleased with the work carried out by Darren and Jamie, they have transformed our shower room. During the initial meetings, they listened and designed and bathroom based on our requirements, presenting samples of materials and we had the opportunity to make any adjustments. Darren and Jamie are enthusiastic and passionate about their work. Customer satisfaction is highly important to them. We knew exactly what the price was beforehand, the work was completed on time and the quality is exceptional! Thank you JDS. Best Regards Mr and Mrs Wells 41

Nordic-style dining table dressed for Christmas

As everyone knows, the true centrepiece of any Christmas day is the dinner. And the centrepiece of the dinner is the, well, centrepiece. And candles, and place cards, and place mats... With this in mind, here are a few original ideas to style up your dining room this festive season - and perhaps rival the turkey as the star of the show. If you’re looking to make an impact, you can’t beat a striking colour scheme. Silvers and golds will create a classy, classic feel, while purples, teals and blacks will establish a more modern aesthetic. Crisp white table linens and crockery will add freshness and look great when paired with gold candlesticks and metallic ornamental touches. If you want to add a hit of formal glam, consider tying fabrics or linens around the chair backs. You can have fun with Christmas tree baubles too, either hanging pedantlike over the table or scattered among the tableware. Indeed, for a more dramatic effect combine hanging baubles with vintage ornaments, elegant candelabras and rich colour palettes. There, your very own winter

MERRY CHRISTMAS & HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Gardening

IN DECEMBER DECEMBER

Carry on digging over beds and borders and incorporate as much organic matter as you can. Forking over not only helps prepare the soil for next year, it helps reduce pests by exposing them to hungry birds. Protect pots and taps from frost by wrapping insulation around them. Bubble wrap is ideal and probably in plentiful supply if you are ordering Christmas presents over the internet! Clear paths of moss and lichen, treat timber with preservative, repair fences, check sheds and walls (but avoid any concreting until there is no chance of frost), clean and insulate greenhouses (that bubble wrap again!) and ensure heaters are working properly. Even a little insulation will make a huge difference to your heating bill.

TREES & SHRUBS

From now until March is the ideal time to plant bare rooted deciduous hedging - the most economical way to establish a hedge. Beech and hornbeam (similar to beech but more suitable for heavy soils) both keep their leaves over the winter and are therefore good for screening, whilst hawthorn is the ‘country classic’ - perfect for a natural looking yet almost impenetrable barrier. Prepare a trench, preferably a week or so before planting to give the soil a chance to settle. Wait until the ground is neither sodden nor

frozen and plant away - it’s worth waiting for the right conditions; your plants will be perfectly happy sitting in the pots of compost they came in for weeks! Rhododendrons and camellias make excellent Christmas presents - if your soil is unsuitable (alkaline), the centre has a great choice of elegant pots. Don’t forget the ericaceous compost. Tidy up trees and shrubs, cutting out any dead, diseased or damaged wood where necessary. Cut shoots and branches for winter decoration. If you have holly berries net some of them for Christmas otherwise the birds will have the lot. Secure netting firmly to prevent birds becoming trapped in loose folds. Make a Christmas wreath using evergreen sprigs from your garden, decorations such as berries and fir cones, dried orange slices, cinnamon sticks and wide, wired ribbon.

Bulbs - they should really be planted already, but if you haven’t quite got around to it, put them in the ground as soon as you can. It’s not exactly text book stuff, but they will probably come up and flower in the spring, even if a little later than normal - worth a go!

CONTAINERS

Repetitive, we know, but do raise containers onto feet or bricks to protect them from wet and cold and lag them with bubble wrap, hessian or fleece if not frost proof. In really cold weather even hardy plants may need protecting so hunt out any insulating material. Remove debris regularly to prevent pests from taking up residence and brighten up dull pots and containers with winter pansies and winter flowering heathers.

LAWNS

If the weather allows, repair holes and tatty patches in your lawn. If it is waterlogged, as most will be after the November deluges, or even frozen try and avoid walking on it - damage is easily inflicted!

FLOWERS AND CONTAINERS

Put bark chips around hellebores to protect the delicate blooms from rain splashes and cut off any leaves with black spots on them this is a fungal disease and not to be tolerated!

Gardening Tips Clean and repair your garden tools. New tools are always a welcome present, as are new gardening gloves!

DECEMBER FILM REVIEW 12a

FANTASTIC BEASTS AND WHERE TO FIND THEM 1920’s New York and a peculiar wizard by the name of Newt Scamander has just arrived to meet with an important official at the Magical Congress of the USA, carrying with him a suitcase filled with magical creatures. When the beasts escape and begin to run riot on an unsuspecting world, the already tense relations between magical people and muggles is strained further. Not helped by the fact that wizards and witches are already threatened by an extremist group who are committed to ridding the world of magical people, Newt must use every trick up his sleeve to right his wrongdoing. With a little help from two witches, sisters Tina (Katherine Waterston) and Queenie Goldstein (Alison Sudol), and a muggle named Jacob (Dan Fogler), Newt sets out to recapture the beasts and return them to their natural habitats. The first instalment of a planned trilogy, this highlyanticipated prequel to Harry Potter marks J.K. Rowling’s debut as a screenwriter. Having thrilled audiences and critics with his performances in The Theory of Everything (2014) and The Danish Girl(2015), Academy award winner Eddie Redmayne leads the cast as Newt Scamander. Stellar support comes from Colin Farrell (The Lobster) and Katherine Waterston (Inherent Vice). The picture is directed by David Yates, who was responsible for the last four films in the Harry Potter franchise. Feel the magic at Vue and catch Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them in jaw-dropping 3D or stunning IMAX 3D at selected cinemas.

A UNITED KINGDOM An interracial couple cause global controversy in the late 1940s when they marry against the will of their families in this biographical drama. Post-war London. Ruth Williams (Rosamund Pike) meets Seretse Khama (David Oyelowo) in her hometown, and the pair fall quickly in love and dream of a long and happy life together as one. Unfortunately, the world they live in has different plans. As the grandson of an African King, Seretse is heir to the throne and his intentions of marrying the white daughter of a British salesman do not sit well with his father. Ruth too must also deal with racism in the shape of her own father, and is warned that her relationship will be responsible for the downfall of the British Empire in Africa – a country torn apart by Apartheid. As the pressures mount and racial tensions flare, the pair must fight to unite their divided nations and protect their love from prejudice. Adapted from the Susan Williams novel “Colour Bar,” this powerful picture is based on a truestory and directed by Amma Asante – who was responsible for the brilliant perioddrama Belle (2013). Rosamund Pike (Gone Girl) and David Oyelowo (Selma) both turn in stand-out performances, with stellar support in the shape of Tom Felton (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2), Laura Carmichael (Downton Abbey) and Jack Davenport (Kingsman: The Secret Service).
