OF THE SUMMER

fashion Unsure of how to update your summer wardrobe? Here’s a few summertime fashion do’s and don’ts to help you decide how to make the most of summertime fashion.

DO

try new things. Change up something like your sunglass silhouette. Whether it’s round, cat-eye, oversize, or aviator, try a sunglass shape you’ve never tried before.

DON’T

underestimate simplicity. Take the T-shirt dress, the throw-on-and-go. T-shirt dress is perfect for summer. Wear yours from day to night by transitioning into slightly fancier footwear and some fun accessories. Bonus: T-shirt dresses are easy to travel with—they rarely wrinkle and don’t have to be dry-cleaned! 6 insight

DO

layer. Layering isn’t just for winter months and heavy clothing. Simply adding a T-shirt under a sundress or a button-down over a bustier is ideal for summer. Try this styling trick when you’re totally bored with your favorite summer outfits.

DON’T

DO

go girly. Choose something with versatility like a white lace top. You can dress up a white lace top with a skirt and heels (or dress it down with denim shorts and sandals). Even try pairing it with moto boots and a leather jacket to turn the feminine piece into something more edgy.

DON’T

wait for a dressy outing to wear white. And don’t stop wearing white. White is the ultimate summer neutral and feels so light and airy that you should try styling it head-to-toe once in a while.

DO

put your boots away. Just because it’s summer doesn’t mean that you can’t wear boots anymore. Sure, they’re heavier than a summer sandal, but they add a little edge to sweet summer shorts or a sundress.

f ling

Summer

looking for that perfect summer romance? Summer flings have there own code of behaviors and comes complete with an already known expiration date.

DO

keep your passport handy and current. Be ever ready for adventure, and you just might find it. Take an impromptu getaway with your summer companion, or accept a chance at meeting the quintessential tall dark stranger in an exotic locale.

DON’T

meet the parents. Nothing says “seriadd a pop of colour. unplug. Turn off your iPhone, your BlackBerry, your iPad, your Tablet. It’s time to rethink your Facebook addiction. Pics of your hunky new beau may brighten your profile, but others will know your summer romance is hardly sizzling if you’re spending more time online than off. Concentrate on being with him, not posting about him.

DON’T

use your summer sweetheart to make any back-home beau jealous. (Even if you think he’s using that girl just to get back at you.) In September, you’ll have more than enough time to sort through those icky, complicated feelings. But for now, September is a galaxy far, far away. There are still plenty of sun-drenched days and magical nights.

DO

date outside your comfort zone and your usual circle of friends. Summer’s a time for fun and frivolity, and even beach reading is light and frothy. Consistently date older men? Give that hot young barista another look. Always fall for the hard-hat hunk? Try bringing your personal sunshine to a pasty-faced music geek. Avoid dallying with your best friend’s brother or anyone else whom you’ll have to face come fall.

DON’T

make promises you don’t intend to keep—to him or to yourself. He may not be the man you plan to marry, but he’s still a human being and you’re (of course) a heartbreaker. Don’t lead him on, nor let yourself get carried away. Don’t start designing adorable his-and-hers Halloween costumes or scripting your sublime New Year’s Eve midnight kiss. The perfect summer romance will wilt like so many drooping tulips.

itter, I Healier Summer Vacation! Summer Vacation! By Samira Khalil

t’s summer time! Lots of traveling is planned ahead with the sun, the fun and the beach! One of the biggest problems I always face during summer is the massive amount of food & sweets I indulge in. I always thought it’s hard to enjoy the beach without stocking up on high caloric fatty food like ice-cream, chips, candy bars and of course soda! I know sometimes temptations can’t be avoided, but knowing and planning ahead will get you out of the danger zone. So if you are just like me and still wondering how you can stay fit this summer. Try implementing these tips on your next vacation and let’s see what happens!

Moderation

Make sure that 80% of what you eat during the day is good and healthy food for your body and 20% is a small treat you would enjoy with your friends (like a small bar of chocolate). This will work wonders because it keeps you from feeling deprived. Also the 80/ 20 rule is one of the best ways for weight loss, maintenance and it’s proved to be sustainable over the long run.

Don’t drink your calies

Most of what we take to the beach like sodas and juices are loaded up with sugar that will even make us feel more hungry all the time. Drink water or fresh juices with no added sugar. Say NO to diet drinks, soda, packed juice and artificial sweeteners.

Exercise

You don’t need a fully equipped gym in order to exercise. I plan to run, walk or swim during my vacations. Get in the pool; it’s a great fitness resource as well! And after I have my workout in the early morning, I lay on the beach guilt free!

Healy eakfast

Kick start your day with a healthy breakfast. I usually get some healthy options like fruits, yoghurt, eggs, brown bread and white cheese. AVOID starting your day off with pastries, jams and cream cheese. Even if you are having your breakfast at a restaurant, skip added cheeses and meats on your omelettes, if you’re ordering a sandwich, order grilled protein with tomato and lettuce. Got it?

Stay active

Find a way to stay active during your vacation. Act like a kid again, use a bike instead of your car, take a diving lesson or try a surfing board. Having fun instead of doing the same structured workout routine is great for your body and soul. At last, the more simple straightforward methods we use to keep us healthy and fit, the easier it is for us to stay on track and achieve the results we always wanted. Enjoy your summer and stay healy!

YOUR GUIDE TO SURVIVING SAHEL

R

egardless the reason, it’s time to go wild and celebrate this summer. We’ve all seen the shows and know how messy a week of hard-core partying can be, so follow our top tips below and get the most out of your well-deserved vacation. STAY HYDRATED Water must be your best friend while you’re away. Keep that body hydrated in the heat to the point that you need the toilet every five minutes. The combination of scorching sun, late nights and heavy partying isn’t a healthy mix and won’t do your head any favours in the morning. No matter how wild you are, make sure you drink at least two pints of water before you go to bed (even if it’s 7am). This should reduce the pounding head and means you can be raring to go the next night… and the five nights after that. PRE-DRINK You know what it’s like living on a tight budget, so why not continue the tradition in true student style? Once you get your complimentary drink for going into a bar or club, the drink prices will rocket. Keep the price down and have a predrink party on

the balcony before you head out. Predrinking in the hotel is a good way to make some friends, or even a cheeky holiday romance so whip out the playing cards and get your group in the mood. Don’t forget to sip plenty of water during the night and drink responsibility. THE DIET Don’t worry we aren’t suggesting you spend time worrying that you’ve eaten your five a day (you’ll get that in your cocktail). But remember, it’s always important to line your stomach; skipping dinner in the evening isn’t an option. After all, you’ll need the 10 insight

energy to dance all night. All holiday resorts have supermarkets where you can easily quid together and buy a pasta bake. A string of late nights, kebabs and fish bowls can cause you to become rundown; this may sound very parental, but why not take some vitamin tablets with you? This will keep you healthy and ready to power on throughout the whole week. THE WARDROBE It’s practically tradition for large groups to enjoy a dress up night. Outfits can range from morph suits to school kids or even a bit of crossdressing…Whatever the theme, make sure you take a few quirky outfits with you; you don’t want to be wasting money out there or be that loser who didn’t get involved. If you’re a group of lads, matching t-shirts are certainly the way forward. GEEK UP Yes, this sounds boring, but if you’re spending money to be on holiday, then you want to make sure you do it right. Read up on the best clubbing hotspots to visit during your stay. Which world famous DJs are going to play? Are there any gig tickets you want to purchase in advance? Which bars have happy hours? Don’t have your head in a guidebook the whole time, but a little bit of preparation is always good so you don’t miss out on any of the action. Word of advice, you will pay a fortune for gig/DJ tickets if you decide to rock up straight to the door on the night. BE ACTIVE It’s not that difficult to roll yourself out of bed in the morning and make your way to the sun lounger. Why spend all day in bed recovering from the night before, when you can sleep outside in the glorious sunshine and enjoy some well-needed rays? Make sure you get out there and enjoy yourself. For the real active types in your party, why not rent a quad bike and explore the resort in style? Most party resorts have excellent water sports, so hop on that Jet Ski or mount that banana boat and enjoy some great daytime activities.

hoosing the right swimsuit is an obvious way to amp up your shore side style, but you also can’t forget about what goes over the swimwear. There is an excitement in picking a swimsuit cover-up. You show off the cover-up more than the actual swimsuit. The outfit assemble is chosen specifically to cover it more often than not. We explore the trendy beach cover up options for the season.

Summer Cover-ups 20 insight

Maxi dresses are another popular and on point beach cover up. More is less, and leaves the mystery as to what is on underneath. Maxi is an effortless trend that continues from the previous summer, and can be spiced up through colors and print. Find something interesting and eye catching to enhance your beach look. The sarong. The classic beach cove-up. And for good reason. The most versatile beach piece one can have. Coming in all sizes, patterns and colors, it can be wrapped to cover as much or as little as you’d like. Wear it around your hips, for a classic beach look, or preform a simple wrap to turn it into the perfect beach dress, or chose any of the infinite ways to wear this item.

Another innovative beach cover-up is a button-down. It’s alluring, clean, and crisp. It can be worn in multiple manners, much like the sarong, buttoned or tied, worn loose, or cuffed, wear it fitted, or oversized, loose and baggy. Pick through any color or pattern. Or choose the classic white button down, which is an in color for this summer season, and offsets a tan like no ones business. Whichever cover-up you choose to enjoy the beach in, keep it light and airy. Embrace light sheer fabrics, and experiment with colors, patterns and texture. Add in fringed dress or poncho. All year round we dream about lounging on perfectly sandy beaches under the scorching summer sun. Whether it’s Tuesday or Saturday, during the summer season, the beach is always on our minds and packing appropriately is crucial. Whether you like to lug around your summer must-haves, beach basics or your guilty pleasures, a properly stocked beach tote is essential in promising that you’ll have a fabulous sea-side experience. 1. Every beach bag needs the perfect towel. 2. Having reading material in arms reach is always a good idea. 3. After exposing your hair to sun, sand, and saltwater it becomes an unmanageable tangled mess. Spritz leave-in conditioner to help repair the damage and keep your hair super smooth. 4. The perfect pair of sunglasses is an intricate part in reflecting your personal style. 5. Keep a breezy dress or swimsuit cover up in your beach bag incase you walk off the beach in search of food. It also insures that you’ll look cute at any impromptu post beach activities. 6. Keep a waterproof makeup bag in your beach bag for your beauty must-haves like powder, waterproof mascara, lip-gloss and even deodorant. This is also a safe place to store your cell phone and digital camera to protect them from the sea elements. 7. Sunburn is never a desirable summer style so pile on the sun protection and be smart when it comes to your sun exposure. 8. Protect your feet from the hot sand during those trips back and fourth to your car with a cute pair of flip-flops. 9. Keep an after sun moisturizer in your bag, it helps lock in your tan and moisturizes your dry skin. 10. Stay away from the brutal summer heat and keep cool with a cooling spray prefect for spritzing yourself between dips into the sea.

H

ot days, cool nights could only mean one thing - summer is upon us and, for many, that means it’s time to be out in the sun and start sporting the summer glow. But amidst the excitement, don’t forget the importance of safe summer sun tanning.

TANNING BEDS The idea that using a tanning bed before sun tanning, to gain a base tan, and help protect you from the sun, simply isn’t true. You may not burn as quickly, but you still are damaging your skin. If you plan to tan in the sun, skip the extra damage of a tanning bed. If you really want to head to the beach with a tan already in place apply some fake tan to give you that glow without the harmful effects of a tanning bed.

SUNGLASSES AND HATS To achieve an even tan, remember your shades and hat. The skin around your eyes, including your eyes themselves, are delicate to UV rays, so make sure the sunglasses contain both UVA and UVB protection. A hat with a two- to three-inch brim can protect your ears, eyes, forehead, nose, and scalp all at once while you look stylish getting your tan.

SUNSCREEN The sun’s rays are remarkably powerful and proficient, so wear sunscreen every day. When choosing a sunscreen, look for an SPF of at least 30. Remember to apply SPF 15 to 30 minutes before you go in the sun, reapply 15 to 30 minutes after you have been exposed to the sun, and reapply after you have been in any water. Some who are out to get a tan tend to ditch the sunscreen and stick with tanning oil. This leaves your skin defenseless against

the harmful rays from the sun. Always lather some sunscreen and let it dry for a bit before putting on some tanning oil or other type of tanning accelerator. Contrary to the beliefs of many tanning enthusiasts, you can still tan with sunscreen, and it’s better that you do. In fact, sun protection factor (SPF) extends the time you can spend in the sun without suffering additional skin damage.

EXFOLIATE

skin looks and feels. Drink at least eight 8 glasses of water every day during the summer as you get dehydrated easily by the heat.

PRECISION Timing is key. If you’re tanning your front for ten minutes make sure you give your back side the same, equal amount of time exposed to the sun. You wouldn’t want an uneven tan, would you?

To achieve the best possible tan outdoors, you must exfoliate at least 24 hours before sun exposure. The act of exfoliation removes the dead cells from the uppermost layer of the skin and allows for fresh skin to appear. You can scrub or buff away the dead skin cells by doing cost-effective physical scrubs like sugar, oatmeal, and salt with a loofah pad or exfoliating glove. The less build-up of dead skin cells, the more shallow your layer of skin will be, which will make your tan last longer. The removal of dead skin will also allow you to tan more easily because your tan will appear and fade evenly.

HAIR

MOISTURIZE

OVEREXPOSURE

In the summer it is tempting to ease up on moisturizing because your skin may not feel as dry. But good moisturizers work over time, promoting healthy skin with consistent use. It would be foolish to ditch your moisturizers as they are your best anti-aging tool. After you get your tan, it’s best to help your skin recover. Apply some cooling lotion and moisturizer. There are products available in the market that have aloe vera, which can help damaged skin heal faster.

To get a healthy and glowing tan, do not overexpose your skin to UV rays. It is best to tan gradually by dividing your time under the sun evenly to reduce sunburn. Spending a whole day at the beach may give you a tan look for a day but it may very well leave you with sunburns when you leave. The best way to get a healthy summer glow is to tan in small doses. Half an hour to an hour under the sun a day will allow your body to produce adequate melanin to aid you the next time you tan.

We often forget about our tresses. During the summer, it’s not only our skin that gets damaged – our hair tends to dry out and become very brittle due to prolonged exposure to the sun’s rays as well. Never take your hair for granted as damaged hair tends to make us look older as opposed to bouncy and shiny tresses. Try to use hair masks and oils every week in order to keep your hair moisturized and protected from the sun’s effects.

WATER Drinking water benefits how well your body functions and ultimately affects how your

Uzes, France

Our enduring love affair with France, and with Provence in particular, has reached a whole different level. One place sure to please is Uzès, a short hop west of Avignon in rural Languedoc-Roussillon. The town has Renaissance architecture; mazy streets and nuns selling jam in Place aux Herbes. But a sure sign that Uzès is becoming a style outpost is the number of restored houses being run as maisons d’hôtes. L’Albiousse is a tasteful four-room luxury B&B in a 16thcentury house off Place aux Herbes, owned by two former Paris restaurateurs. It is near the Musée du Bonbon, aka the Haribo Museum, as Uzès is the production site for Gummi Bears.

Carmarthenshire, UK

The man himself would no doubt have approved. In the seaside town of Laugharne this year, the centenary of Dylan Thomas’s birth, visitors who can prove it is their birthday can claim a free pint in Brown’s Hotel, the very pub where Thomas liked to sit “mouldering” and giving his liver a punishing work-out.

Alacati, Turkey

Alaçatı, on the Cesme peninsula near Izmir on Turkey’s Aegean coast, was for centuries a Greek settlement within the Ottoman Empire. Ancient houses in the town were taken over by Turkish refugees in the 1920s, and city folk from Izmir would spend summers there. Then windsurfers discovered the near-perfect conditions in its bay and a hip Istanbul crowd fell for its cobbled streets and blue-shuttered stone houses. Over the past 10 years, boho-chic hotels, restaurants championing local produce and antiques shops have mushroomed. The latest opening is Alavya, 25 bedrooms, two restaurants, a spa and a swimming pool set in a walled garden. Pale rooms are filled with contemporary Turkish art, and there’s a private yacht for guests. In the morning have coffee at Köse Kahve then browse Köse Dukkan for gifts and linens, and the art and antiques

shops on Hacı Memis street, stopping for more coffee at Dutlu Kahve (Mulberry Cafe), then a country-style lunch at Asma Yapragi. By day the streets are a treasure trail of strange fruits and vegetables, at night they resemble a vast outdoor cafe or club.

George Town, Malaysia

Once George Town was named a Unesco world heritage site in 2008, the capital of the Malaysian state of Penang began changing into one of south-east Asia’s hottest destinations. Penangites are renovating everything from Chinese mansions to old factories, which means there’s something for all budgets – delicious street food or fine dining; funky hostels or boutique hotels. The latest spot is the Three Sixty Degree Sky Bar. Follow drinks there with either a plate of spicy duck soup from one of the stalls on Kimberley Street or gourmet Penang Nyonya cuisine at Seven Terraces, the restaurant everyone wants to be seen at.

Brazil

Away from the world-cup frenzy, Brazil’s real magic is in the jungles and beaches off its 8,000km coastline. In the relatively unexplored north-eastern state of Alagoas, a succession of rustic-chic laid-back beach pousadas offer fabulous cuisine: try Pousada da Amendoeira on Praia do Toque, or Pousada Casa Zulu in Icaraizinho de Amontada. Beaches aside, anyone heading to Manaus for England’s opening match against Italy should make time to explore the world’s greatest tropical rainforest: Pousada Uacari is a floating lodge in the heart of the jungle.

Rwanda

Few countries have transformed so much in two decades. Today, the streets are spotless, people live in tin- or slate-roofed houses and 98% of the country has Wi-Fi access. But it’s the country’s natural wonders that are the big draw. The mountain

UZ ES, Our ve enduring lo affair with france has hole reached a wvel. different le gorillas made famous by Dian Fossey used to be the preserve of high-end travellers, but mid-range accommodation is starting to open in Virunga national park, and the development of the Congo Nile walking and mountain-biking trail – which takes in stunning Lake Kivu – will no doubt lure intrepid active travellers. With Nyungwe forest named a top trip by National Geographic, Rwanda’s future as a nature destination is starting now.

Cuba

Cuba is already changing. Tourists have long been able to stay in a room in a private home – a casa particular – but now entire historic houses can be let. Suite Havana is a fantastic two-bedroom apartment with a roof terrace in Old Havana. Ydalgo’s Penthouse, is a three-bedroom apartment owned by a designer, in the city’s Vedado district – which also features chic Cafe Madrigal. Casa particulars are changing too: kitsch home-stays being superseded by stylish homes, such as beautiful Finca Kenia in Trinidad – a great spot to enjoy this year’s 500th anniversary celebrations.

Gdansk, Poland

This summer the European Solidarity Centre – a museum, library and research centre – is set to open on the same spot, as a celebration of freedom and democracy. And that’s not the only reason to come to this Baltic seaport. Gdansk has plenty to offer as a city-break destination, without feeling as touristy as Krakow. There’s also far more to the local food scene than potato- and cabbage-stuffed pierogi; try the seafood at Bulaj in the nearby seaside resort of Sopot, or modern Polish recipes at Brovarnia, a buzzing waterside microbrewery and restaurant in the city.

Fashion week also predicts colors and textures for summer 2014, in which they see the trends to take shape around 5 themes: sensual, serene, colorquake, oasis and diaphanous.

SENSUAL Seductive. Desire. Racy. Intense. Voluptuous. It’s words like these Lenzing uses to describe this theme of a steamy, hot summer; where tactility of textiles is slinky and sophisticated. The color palette compliments fabrics like lightreflecting satins, jacquards, rich jerseys and open weave knits.

SERENE Contrasting the passion of the ‘sensual’ theme is a palette of serene blues. Clear open skies and calm seas signify freshness and the simplicity of nature. Spurred on by a longing for handmade authenticity, indigo dying and traditional denim return to the spotlight.

designers use color to refresh, revive and defy conventional wisdom.

This season we are looking at a state of thoughtful, emotional and artistic equilibrium. While this need for stability is reflected in the composition of the palette, the inherent versatility of the individual colors allows for experimentation with new looks and color combinations. The top colors for women for summer 2014 are: Placid Blue, Violet Tulip, Hemlock, Sand, Paloma, Cayenne,

This palette is all about a wild mix of colors and textures. A clash between hard-core technical attitude and natural materials, featuring all kinds of embellishments and elaborations.

OASIS All things sunbaked and natural find their place in clay red and jungle greens. Parched earth and radiant leaves are reflected in rough surfaces and visible grain in fabric weaves, making for deliberately worn and adventured garments and accessories. Prints are more of textures than of patterns.

DIAPHANOUS Gemstones and minerals set off a sartorial alchemy in this palette of opaque pastel tones. Less the sugar sweet pastels of summer past, these are modern tones that take shape in layers of transparent fabrics, in openwork jersey and lightweight, airy smoothness.

YOUR

WORKOUT

AT THE BEACH

S

pending time at the beach can also mean getting a good workout. Many people play Frisbee, fly kites, swim and surf. However, you can also turn your gym workout into a beach workout. Sand has the added benefit of creating an unstable surface. Working on unstable surfaces helps to build up your proprioception, or your body’s sense of equilibrium and stability during motion.

30 insight

Destabilizing a surface can strengthen muscle fibers, and ligaments and tendons that surround the joints. Working out in the water gives you extra resistance to further strengthen muscles. Best of all, a beach workout can employ cardio, strengthening and stretching exercises, giving you a full-body workout. You can choose to do the full beach workout or just a portion, depending upon your time limit and equipment.

W

ith the steady crash of waves, the light whisper of a fresh sea breeze and sunbathers lounging contently in the sunshine, the beach isn’t usually an environment where people overly exert themselves. The mental benefits of working out with the warmth of the sun on you and a view of the horizon are undeniable. There are benefits to working out in the natural environment. People who work out outdoors see an improvement in mental well-being as compared to those who work out indoors. Exercising in natural environments causees a greater feelings of revitalization, increased energy and positive engagement.

The Sand is Your Friend Working out on the sand can make you much stronger than simply working out on a flat indoor surface. Since the sand gives with every step, doing cardio workouts in deep sand will force your muscles to work out harder. For those people who want to challenge their muscles but do not want to spend a lot of time working out, deep sand training is for you. For beginners, try working out in compact flat sand first then begin integrating deep sand training. As you get stronger, increase your deep sand workouts and decrease your workout on compact sand. When you’re doing these workouts, it is also best to do them barefoot as this increases strength in your feet. Sand is also a natural exfoliator so it is a wonderful natural pedicure for your toes. But again, for beginners, gradually ease into barefoot workouts. Wear trainers first then increase intervals of working out barefoot as your feet get stronger.

Jump Into the Ocean! The best part of working out on the beach is the ability to plunge into the ocean after a challenging workout. Though plunging into the ocean after a workout may not have the same benefits as an ice bath, it is refreshing and fun nonetheless. So, take your workouts to the beach this summer. Not only will you get many health benefits from it, but it is extremely fun and exhilarating.

There are a ton of different ways to exercise on the beach, and plenty more than can be possibly mentioned. Feel free to do whatever interests you!

1

Swimming. This is an obvious one. If you are at the beach, you can head into the water and swim some laps. This can either be your whole workout (swimming is a great full body exercise) or you can swim in between your sets of other exercises. Floating around won’t cut it; you must actually be swimming for this to count!

2

Surfing. You can’t do this at every beach, but if you can, surfing can be both fun and a good workout

3

Volleyball/Frisbee/Paddleball. Everyone loves a good game of beach volleyball. But there are plenty of other games you can play on the beach that will keep you active. Just make sure you aren’t standing around doing nothing. Run after that disc, dive for that volleyball, etc. Be a gym class hero.

4

Pick up seashells. If you walk along the beach and repeatedly bend down to pick up seashells, you can make a decent workout out of it. It’s basically like doing a bunch of squats.

5

Use buckets of sand as dumbbells. If you want to do some resistance training, buckets filled with sand can make great weights, and you can quickly adjust the weight for whatever exercise you may be doing.

6

Run on the sand. This is a common way to take advantage of the sand. It’s incredibly challenging, so don’t expect to maintain the same pace you would run on concrete.

7

Bodyweight exercises. Try some push ups, sit ups, planks, or body squats. There are plenty of bodyweight exercises you can use, so be creative in designing your workouts.

Summer BEAUTY

W

e’re a little too excited that summer is coming -- but we’re dreading the inevitable: heat and humidity. While we want to frolic in the sun and dig our toes into the sand, a.k.a. look great on Instagram, we always worry that our frizzy hair, melting makeup and sunburn will determine how long we’ll really spend outside. But there are some tips and tricks out there that will keep you looking and feeling cool in hot weather. KEEP THAT MEAN (OR NICE) MUG ON YOUR MUG. One of the biggest sweaty, gross summerbeauty blunders is drippy makeup. There’s a fine line between dewy and glistening and raccoon eye makeup and out-of-control upper-lip sweat. Summer is the perfect time to lighten up on your normal foundation routine. If you have dry skin, the hot times are perfect for using a light BB or CC cream. If you’re oily, powder mineral bases will do you right and even you out. Finish up your base face by covering standout imperfections lightly with concealer. Also, using a makeup setting spray will make all that face work last longer and prevent muddy foundation from happening. PRIME YOUR EYES. For those soul windows (a.k.a. eyes), priming has never, ever been more important. Using an eye primer will keep you from getting those dreadful eye-shadow creases before you even get to eat your lunchtime BLT, or porridge, or juice cleanse, or whatever. Using waterproof eye makeup products will also alleviate some of these sweat-related first-world-beauty pains. WORK THAT UP DO. It’s time to listen to your Gam Gam and get that hair out of your face. When it’s hotter than Ryan Reynolds’s abs outside, there’s no reason to get your neck all hot and stuffy. Luckily, this summer is chock-full of embellishments to jazz up a tired up do. Whether it’s that ponytail or a ballerina bun that you’re into, experiment and try the slicked look. After a shower, while your hair is still damp, comb it into whatever direction you will have your bun or ‘tail. Take a small amount of gel and apply it to the front section of your hair, leaving the ponytail or bun area alone. Then continue to do your thing, and bun or ponytail it up. Spritz with some hair spray after you’re finished, and go eat an ice cream cone.

Gorgeous TIPS TO STAY

IN HOT WEATHER

LIGHTEN THE LOAD. Rid thyself of heavy beauty products for the time being. It can be too much to use thick creams and lotions when it’s crazy hot out, so swap those heavyweights for lighter body oils. TAKE IT OFF. Another great hot-weather switch is to ditch the nail polish. I know, I sound like a crazy person, but leaving the nails naked and buffing them to a nice shine can put to bed all of that chip worry. With all of your increased outdoor activities and possible salt- and chlorinated-water time, skipping actual polish can make your life a lot simpler. Your nails still look beautiful and “done,” just without the entire gel manicures/polish/nail-art hullabaloo.

Although they look prefect 365 days a year, all day and all night, we will always want more! So leave everything and pay attention, cause the celebs of your dreams are getting hotter than our summer days.

Rihanna Rihanna lost a lot of weight when she went on the 5 Factor Diet and started working out with LA-based trainer Harley Pasternak. His exercise and eating plan is based on fives. It involves five small meals per day, five days of exercise a week made up of five phases, each five minutes long. Each meal has five specific criteria and the plan allows you five cheat days in five weeks. Rihanna does cycling, stationary jogging and jumping jacks as part of her cardio routine. Most of her exercises can be done in her hotel room or backstage before a show, allowing her to squeeze exercise into her hectic schedule.

Mariah Carey Mariah Carey has had her share of weight loss struggles over the years, but since giving birth to twins she has been in great shape. The singer puts her weight loss down to consistent exercise. “I worked like a fiend,” she says. But she added that most of her weight loss is down to diet. She says: “Since having the babies, 90% of losing weight comes down to my diet.” Mariah toned up by doing 45-minute aquaerobics sessions four to five times a week, and by walking. Following her pregnancy, she lost 30lb in three months and has now shed five stone. Rather than weighing herself she judges her size by how she feels in clothes.

Kim mixes up her workouts to avoid getting bored, doing everything from Barry’s Boot Camp to Soul Cycle.

Jennifer Aniston At 45 years old, Jennifer Aniston still has one of the most rockin’ bods in Hollywood. She credits her lean arms and toned abs to a mixture of cardio, resistance training, and yoga, paired with a high-protein, low-carb diet. (With room to cheat on Mexican food and margaritas, of course.)

Mariah Carey Halle Berry Even after giving birth, Halle Berry maintains her Bond-girl abs. She eats five mini-meals a day consisting of protein, fiber, and healthy fats, and hits the gym five times a week. Her workouts are only 25 minutes long, but boast a combination of high-intensity cardio and resistance training.

Jessica Biel Jessica Biel refuses to be stick thin, focusing on weight training and Plyometrics to keep her body athletic and fit. For six days a week, she eats a diet full of fruits, veggies, low-fat protein, and low-glycemic rice, but allows herself a cheat day once a week. Clearly, her hard work is paying off.

SECRETS

OF SUMMER

SPORTS

A

h, summertime. The kids are out of school, everyone’s on vacation, and there’s no better time to get out from under your laptop and get a little physical exertion into your daily routine. Why not try something different? Beyond the major sports we all know, there’s a growing subculture of amateur sports enthusiasts who are not only reviving old sports but creating new ones.

BEACH VOLLEY BALL

CYCLING

Beach Volley is nothing but volleyball nets for what seems like a mile. The object of the game is to send the ball over the net in order to ground it on the opponent’s court, and to prevent the same effort by the opponent. A team is allowed up to three touches to return the ball. The ball is put in play with a service—a hit by the server from behind the rear court boundary over the net to the opponents. The rally continues until the ball is grounded on the playing court, goes “out”, or is not returned properly.

Cycling, also called bicycling or biking, cycling is one of the easiest ways to fit exercise into your daily routine because it’s also a form of transport. It saves you money, gets you fit and is good for the environment. It’s a low-impact type of exercise, so it’s easier on your joints than running or other high-impact aerobic activities. But it still helps you get into shape.

OCTOPUSH Also known as underwater hockey. Its origins date back to 1950s England, originally created by Alan Blake, who taught himself to dive in 1949 with no equipment. Just five years later, he had fleshed out his new sport, which is essentially hockey played along the bottom of a swimming pool. The game is six-on-six, with players — outfitted with snorkels and fins — trying to stick a weighted puck (3 pounds for adults) into the opposing team’s 10-foot-wide goal area.

ULTIMATE FRISBEE

CANOEING Canoeing involves paddling a small craft through water. It is a low impact activity that can improve your aerobic fitness, strength and flexibility. Canoeing can be done as a hobby, a competitive sport or as a fun activity on holidays.

CIRCLE-RULES FOOTBALL It’s the most fun you can have outside with a giant yoga ball — and that includes going to yoga class. Two teams coming at the same goal trying to score with a ginormous sphere that’s been known to bounce uncontrollably and without reason. Your biggest problem will be deciding when you’ve finally had enough for one day.

The goal of Ultimate Frisbee is to work your way down the field by passing a Frisbee disc back and forth to teammates—while avoiding opposing players—until you score into the other team’s end zone. With no referees, the best part of this sport is its spirit: sportsmanship and the expectation of fair play. Teams usually consist of 7 players, but can be played with less or more people.

AQUAAEROBICS The benefits of a workout in water can equal those gained through exercising on land, and it’s suitable for all ages. Aqua aerobics might look easy, but it’s actually quite physically challenging, depending on how much effort you put in. ‘The movements in the water, where you’re pushing and pulling, mimic or are similar to exercises you’d do in the gym or in a home-based program. You’re using legs and hands to push against the resistance in the water, so you’re making muscles work harder than you would in other classes.

“ ON TOP By Rania Ihab

DESIGNER

W

ith every new idea she creates and every distinctive design she explodes, she wows everybody with her sense of art and peculiar style. Mae Alyan, the owner of Naw3em bags and accessories shares with us everything about her dream that has turned into reality, her future projects, favourite summer trends and a lot more. First, What can you tell us about yourself? I am a 27-year-old dreamer who has always loved fashion. When I was 3 I used to play with my mother’s bags, heels and makeup and when high school started everybody started accusing me of being a shopaholic! They didn’t know how much I loved fashion and how much I would appreciate a pretty bag, dress or shoes. I have a thing for anything that looks pretty. I have studied Marketing and International Business but I’ve always immersed myself in Fashion and Arts, the idea of Nawa3em was conceived in May 2011 precisely on my birthday and ever since then I have had the support of my family, my husband and my friends. Why did you choose to specialize in handbags and accessories? Because I Love handbags and accessories, and who doesn’t? You know, even when you gain weight and your pants won’t fit anymore a pretty handbag will always make you look good and feel good, same goes with accessories. What inspires you as a designer? Everything that is beautiful inspires me. Art, portraits, music, cultures, fashion blogs and social media and that’s why I find myself planted in front of my computer screen for hours and hours daily. One of the unique things about your creations is that they make a statement of their own, I guess that requires taking a huge risk, doesn’t that make you afraid? I am a fashion designer I have to be innovative and creative and to be honest the word afraid is not in my dictionary because fashion is all about taking risks. Why “Nawa3em”? Because I wanted an oriental name for my brand that will sound good and look good written in Arabic. What is the closest piece to your heart

from your creations and why? The closest piece to my heart is the pink candy bag that has the phrase’ Helwa we Tenka’ written on it, because it was the beginning of my success, everybody liked it and everybody wanted to order it and it was very pretty and flashy. How can you evaluate the fashion industry in Egypt today? I find the fashion industry in Egypt now much better than before and there are very talented and creative young designers around town such as Zaam, Nada Akram, Amina K and Rafik Zaki. What fashion advice can you give our fashionistas this summer? I would say mix and match, stay original and go for the outfits that compliment your body. In your opinion, what one piece of accessory/ bag should every woman own? I believe every woman should have a black classic Chanel flap bag. Now after almost four years of success, are you pleased with what you’ve reached? I am pleased and grateful but not satisfied, I know I still have more to give. Would you consider creating your own clothing line? Yes, I am working on it right now. What is the blessing/curse of being a designer? The bessing is in every piece I imagine then bring to life and get positive feedback on it, this makes me very happy. The curse is the stress I feel before releasing a new collection, but it gets better with time as I gain more experience and more confidence in what I am doing. This may sound cheesy but I have to ask you what’s in your bag now? Hahaha, well what’s in my bag right now is not very attractive, my mobile phone, my car keys, folic acid, my Dior wallet and a pack of Maltesers. What are your coming projects? I just created a new luxury handbag line ‘Queen Maz’ and the first collection will be released very soon.

ina Bakry’s ethnic designs translate the true meaning of beauty and charm. Each piece she creates foresees the taste of a true talent, for this young art-maker has taken jewelry design to a whole new level with her big dreams, unique creations, and contemporary designs. First of all, what can you tell us about yourself? And when did your journey as a designer begin? I’ve always been drawn to jewelry since I was a little girl. Although I studied Mass Communication and not design, I would often visit jewelry making workshops in Khan El Khalili to learn different jewelry making skills. It was not until I had my son that I decided to start exploring my first ever-artistic passion, jewelry design. So, I enrolled in the Azza Fahmy Design Studio workshop where I learned more intricate jewelry making techniques. Why do you refer to your creations as “Body Jewelry”? My work is mainly about enhancing the body as a whole; that is how I consider my designs different, I want the piece to not just stand out, but to also make the person wearing it seem interesting, like they have a story to tell, and seem different from the rest. One statement piece worn anywhere on the body can say so much about a person. Your pieces seem to have a contemporary feel that borrows from the past, what is your design aesthetic? I am inspired by anything and everything. I draw inspiration from the world around me; it doesn’t have to be something so obvious; it could be a moment or a feeling. I also love exploring the aesthetic of various cultures. I am intrigued by the visual representation of cultures throughout history. That is why my pieces have an ethnic flair. In your opinion, what one piece of accessory should every woman own? Every woman should own a single piece of jewelry that stirs an emotion within her. The first time I lay my eyes on a piece of jewelry, I have to feel something. If I don’t, I move on to look at other pieces.

Who do you wish to see wearing your designs? Anyone inspired or moved by my creations. Anyone who sees something special in them, or who feels an immediate connection with one of my pieces. What one piece that you created is the closest to your heart, and why? My favorite piece was a flower brooch that I made out of plastic spoons, it was an assignment given to us at the Azza Fahmy Design Studio. I loved that I repurposed something mundane to make something beautiful out of it. What do you think of the jewelry design industry in Egypt today? There are so many talented jewelry makers and skilled designers in Egypt today exploring their world through their art. I love seeing more and more jewelry designers express their talents by creating their own pieces. I would love to see more and more Egyptian designers thriving in regional and international markets and making us, Egyptians, proud! What advice can you give our fashionistas this summer? Summer or winter: Be yourself. Only you can be you, so celebrate it. Are you pleased with what you’ve accomplished so far? I am very proud yes, but I’m hungry for more! So I will always keep pushing myself, pushing my creative boundaries, and exposing myself to new experiences to expand my design scope. How do you prepare for a new collection? I don’t have a specific ritual. When inspiration hits me my hands work. I am generally always researching and exploring cultural themes, whether I am preparing to design something or not. So there’s always a bank of ideas in my head. What are your upcoming projects? Something very exciting inshallah! You’ll have to wait and see.

or Ahmed Azzam designing is not just a job, it’s what satisfies his passion for fashion. From his first collection, he conquered the fashion world by storm and in no time ZAAM designs became one of the most awaited for collections in Egypt, Oman and the U.S. First, what can you tell us about yourself? My name is Ahmed Azzam; I’m 24 years old. I graduated from the Faculty of Commerce English section, Cairo University. I have been working in the online and digital field for four years now aside designing.

You studied commerce, how did you make the leap into handbag design? Fashion is my passion and since my early college years I have been satisfying my passion by doing small fashion projects. During my first and second years, I used to design women accessories and it went well but didn’t last long due to studying. In my third year, I designed men apparel and in my senior year, I used to provide the student models with their uniforms. After graduation, I was so excited to start my corporate career that I stopped all my activities. Two years later I felt unsatisfied with my life and decided to get back to my passion. In 2012, I started scanning the market and started preparing for my first bag line. What drew you to handbag design? When I decided to get back to the fashion industry I scanned the market to check the gap we have, and I decided to start with bags as I didn’t find a lot of bag designers here in Egypt. ZAAM is planned to be a full leather goods brand, and we are continuing on this track, that’s why we introduce new items each year. Luckily, we succeeded in the past two years to have our imprint in the market. What inspires you as a designer? Everything around inspires me; I try to have a theme for each collection I introduce, and make each collection different from the other. But mainly I love the vintage and classic style.

obstacles I’m facing due to lack of commitment, finishing standards and quality. It takes double the effort and time to get a piece done. What one piece that you created is the closest to your heart, and why? All my bags are so close to my heart and I have a story behind each of them from the designing phase till production. It’s hard to pick one to be the closest as I have a favourite in each line. However my last collection for Cairo Fashion Festival – 2nd Edition, could be my favorite one due to the unique shapes and materials used. How can you evaluate the industry in Egypt today? The fashion industry in Egypt is booming, we are having a lot of good and quality fashion events, fashion magazines and blogs. Also you will find all the corporates directing a good portion of their marketing budget to fashion, regardless their core business. If you checked the sponsors of any fashion event you will find corporates from the telecom industry to Aviation, Banks and FMCG, which is a good sign and that’s giving us high and good exposure. Are you pleased with what you’ve reached? I’m so happy with my achievements in the past two years; I’m working according to the plan. Now you can find ZAAM bags in Egypt, Oman and U.S., next destination is Dubai. I hope for my brand to be there before the end of 2014. Also each year I try to add new items to ZAAM lines. After our first anniversary the Men Collection was introduced and the new line to be introduced this year is the wallets and leather accessories.

In your opinion what one bag every woman should own? This one depends on the personality of each woman, as it should fit her style. But I really appreciate a courageous girl who is able to wear the unique shaped and colored bags that make her standalone in the crowd.

How do you prepare for a new collection? This is the critical and the most time consuming part, as I need to find a theme or a story for the line that is new and different from my previous collections and it takes me a while to find it. That’s why I’m always paying attention to my surroundings as I might catch the idea of the new line. After this phase I start the designing phase aligned with market scanning to check the available materials and if it will correlate with the designs and theme or not.

What challenges did you face as a designer in Egypt? As the industry is still booming I’m facing a lot of issues in finding the high quality materials and production. Labor is one of the biggest

What are your upcoming projects? I am preparing for my fall 2014 collection. It’s a big line and important to me as it features the collaboration between ZAAM and two big entities.

‘ZAAM’ IS PLANNED TO BE A FULL LEATHER GOODS BRAND, AND WE ARE CONTINUING ON THIS TRACK.

f you think you don’t know her, THINK AGAIN! And look inside your closet for your favourite t-shirt. Nada Akram concurred the fashion world with her stylish unique designs, and with her artistic taste and little sketchbook; she continues to be on top. From online shopping to owning one of the biggest lines in Egypt, how did it all happen? It all happened very quickly, social media was my lucky charm plus word of mouth. Usually when someone wears a piece of my collection her friends ask her where it came from and so on. What is your source of inspiration as a designer? Everything vintage in Egypt, I am always nostalgic about culture and working to add a casual effect to it. When it comes to printed tops and t-shirts you are considered a trendsetter, how did you turn such a basic idea into a trademark? First, this is one of my favorite questions and thank you for seeing me that way. It all started by my addiction to t-shirts, I never stop buying t-shirts and I was so bored from the stores, it was so easy to tell which t-shirt is from which store. I decided when I started my line to add something 3D to a vintage photo. My first two photos were Audrey Hepburn and Marylin Monroe, I added Arabic writing, a skirt and a bow and this is how it all started. It’s my signature to turn a vintage print to a funky up-to-date t-shirt. A lot of celebrities were spotted wearing Nada Akram Designs, who is your favorite to dress? I have to say its Yasmin Raies because she is so bold and always open to try new things. Who do you wish to see wearing Nada Akram? Nancy Agram in the Middle East and Eva longoria internationally. What is the closest piece to your heart from your creations, and why? This will always be my boro’a t-shirt because it’s hand drawn and the boro’a on it is so vintage. It’s my top selling

design and it has been copied a lot, so I think it’s a huge success. How can you evaluate the fashion industry in Egypt today? Fashion industry is growing and getting better every year and a lot of designers are appearing on the scene, and that is making me very happy. What fashion advice can you give our fashionistas this summer? Wear what you feel comfortable with and always be different and unique. In your opinion, what are the summer basics every girl should own? A plain cotton maxi dress. Your S’S14 launch party was a blast, did you expect this huge success? I didn’t expect it to be that successful, thanks for Bazarna team who organized the whole thing for me. I am so grateful for them. Are you pleased with what you’ve reached? I am thankful for sure but I still have a lot more to do. It’s a long journey and it’s really hard to work in a field that doesn’t consider copyrights. How do you prepare for your new collection? I prepare my new collection very early, as I always have a small notebook with all the ideas and sketches and I keep adding to it through the year. I never follow any rules or runway trends; I just do what I love to do. What’s your advice for those who want to follow your footsteps? Be yourself, have your own signature and taste, never copy any other designer, study fashion, as having a fashion line is not about buying some fabric and going to someone to do them for you, love what you do and always be original. What’s new for Nada Akram? I am preparing a new kids fashion line with my friend Dania Banawy. I am also preparing for my anniversary by launching a limited edition beach-wear in August to be displayed at Bazarna Marrassi.

SHADY LABIB SHADY LABIB IS NOT JUST A TYPICAL DENTIST, HE’S A

NUTRITIONIST

AS WELL

64 insight

“ SUCCESSFUL YOUNG AND

By: Roulla Soussou

ABOUT YOU What can you tell us about yourself? I am 27 years old; I graduated from the faculty of dentistry, Cairo University in 2009. I also got a certification in sports nutrition and lifestyle coaching from Canada and Egypt in 2013. I am currently working as a dentist and a nutritionist at the same time. I also study and compose oriental music at the Arabic Oud House. How did you find your current path in life? Was there a turning point or “Ah-Ha” moment for you? Well it all happened just 3 years ago, when I went through some personal changes, which made me break old beliefs about myself and build new beliefs that were the catalysts for the cascade of changes that happened to me afterwards. You have been working as a dentist for nearly 6 years before you started to develop an interest in nutrition and health – what set you on this path? It all started when I lost weight on my own, which totally transformed my life. When did you decide that this is not enough and you can do more? 2 years ago. How are you able to balance your busy schedule? Well it’s not that easy, but at least I am my own boss! I believe that eventually one will win over the other, and it seems that nutrition is winning so far.

HEALTH & NUTRITION What inspired you to start a whole new career? Long story short, I have been trying to lose weight my entire life. It was a struggle that affected all aspects of my life, emotional, mental and physical. Until 3 years ago, after going through some changes, I was able, on my own, to create for myself a new healthy lifestyle, that for the first time, I enjoyed living. Now seeing many people going through the same struggle, trying hard to do this transformation, but seeking the wrong means, that I once thought were the only solution, made me want to reach out and share my personal experience and also my new passion, which is nutrition. Your philosophy towards dentistry is more than just fixing teeth, removing

teeth and filling them! Can you explain how dentistry, nutrition and body chemistry all fit together? What interests me the most about these 2 professions is human relationship and contact. It’s all about listening to the client and understanding what he or she is going through, and doing my best to solve his/her complaint. Developing this kind of relationship is priceless. I am also passionate about science and biochemistry, which are a huge part of both professions. It’s funny that I have to deal with food, from how it impacts the health of the oral cavity to how it impacts health in general and body fat! Who influenced you to become who you are today? Dr. Ray Hinish and Blith Alberg from the ‘Cut The Fat’ podcast had a big influence on my lifestyle transformation and my growing passion of nutrition. Also many authors like Paulo Coelho and Khalil Gibran who constantly inspired me to become the person I am today. What advice would you have for other up and coming doctors who want to follow their own dreams? The fact that they are conscious of their own dreams and know what they want is already half the work, now the tough part is to seek that dream, and to be prepared for resistance of all sorts, internal and external. Only people who are aware of that will succeed, those are the most persistent and committed. As Paulo Coelho puts it: ““There is only one thing that makes a dream impossible to achieve: the fear of failure.” How has your family and friends supported you during your journey? Well for the exception of my best friend who believed in me since day one and helped me all the way until now, I faced resistance from society and my family who were concerned about me, dropping a secured successful job for an unknown future, but things changed later on when they started seeing the amount of dedication and persistence I had for this new passion of mine. What’s it like to meet someone on the street and see he has transformed thanks to your tips? It really confirms my mission in life; it’s God’s way of saying you have taken the correct path, keep doing what you’re doing! So it’s more than just a feeling of happiness.

MY PERSONAL MOTTO IS “STOP DIETING AND START NOURISHING” When you reflect on your career, is there anything you wish you could change? No, I think I had to go through all of these phases to become the person I am now and to know what I really want in life. Everyone has insecurities and doubts and we know that being your own boss can be a blessing and a curse! How do you encourage yourself to stay positive and keep moving forward? I have learnt through my short experience that there will always be doubts and fears during the journey, one should embrace this and move on. I have based my new career on my personal and life changing experience, so whenever I am down, I go back to my journey and see how far I have came and how much I’ve changed, not only that but I see my clients who have changed just as much and are now embracing a new healthy lifestyle. What are your top five diet and nutrition tips? 1) My personal motto is “stop dieting and start nourishing” 2) start changing only one bad habit at a time, like going from 3 sodas to 1 per day and avoid overnight life style, overhaul. 3) stay away from refined sugar, you don’t want that stuff in your body! 4) Start eating more “real food”, something most of us forgot it even existed. 5) MOVE! Research has proven, that even a 10 minutes daily walk could have a big impact on your metabolism and BMI on the long run. Start small and build up!

What does the future hold for Shady Labib? I have many plans for the future, many ambitions, but all I can do “NOW” is work and continue to be persistent, but at the end, I don’t know where fate will take me, I’m still open and willing to accept any new changes or deviations.

LEGENDARY YEHYA KHALIL THE

SOUND

OF JAZZ

I HAD A LONG JOURNEY,

SOMETIMES WHEN I TALK ABOUT IT I GET LOST IN ALL ITS STAGES 66 insight

HIS JOURNEY IS NOTHING BUT THE RESOLUTENESS AND DETERMINATION OF A YOUNG BOY WHO ONCE HAD A DREAM, AND WITH THE POWER OF HIS MAGICAL TALENT IT TURNED INTO REALITY. NOT ENOUGH WORDS CAN DESCRIBE THIS FORCE, BUT I WAS MORE THAN HONORED TO SIT WITH THE MAN WHO CHANGED OUR ENTIRE PERSPECTIVE TOWARDS JAZZ MUSIC… LEGENDARY YEHYA KHALIL.

By Rania Ihab

FIRST, TELL US WHY DID YOU CHOOSE THE DRUMS? I saw a movie about the lifetime of Gene Krupa, who became the first solo drummer in the Jazz world. His family didn’t want him to play music; they wanted him to be a priest, and in order to make his sick father happy he became a priest. One day, he went to see his friends, they asked him to play and he remembered again that this is what he really wants to do. He left his career as a priest and returned to playing the drums and they show you how hard he worked to achieve his dream. Then he moved to New York and became the lead drummer of Benny Goodman’s band. After that he created his own band and became a sensation. Mainly after watching that movie, I wanted to be a drummer. When I was young, I used to listen to the radio, that’s all we had then, especially the directed transmission from Washington DC. There was a program called Jazz Hour presented by Willis Conover, he had a very deep voice talking about Jazz that it touched my heart and soul, I found myself falling for Jazz music and I wanted to be a part of that world with all its different styles, sounds and instruments. When I learned the Gene Krupa story, I said, “Tomorrow I am going to buy a drum set and put it in the house.” Ever since I started playing every single day, all day and all night.

money with me when I travel because at that time if you had your visa, you were only allowed to leave the country with 5 pounds. I went to Beirut with some money to hold me a little bit and I spent almost a year there playing music. We had a small studio apartment in Hamra and I played in Café du Bois, Vinicia, Saint George and many nice places. All that time I was making arrangements to move to the states. When I moved to the states, I was very lucky that I started playing music in less than two months and everything happened to me very fast. I was living in a reservation area and then I moved to Brooklyn, when I arrived I saw a building which was only two floors. I asked the owner to sign for rent, he said, “I only have this club down here and I have three apartments, one on top of the club and two upstairs.” And he invited me to the club that turned to be one of the most famous Blues clubs in the whole country, where some of the great guys like Albert King, Johnny Hooker play with

JAZZ

myself and I found myself in Jazz. Jazz is a way of life; it is a style of living and a philosophy that teaches you things about freedom, respect, organization, happiness and peace. It teaches you to express yourself and to make your own statement in life. I am happy about my career, I am happy about my accomplishments, I made Jazz a popular music and this was part of my mission. For years I have been teaching people about Jazz, its different styles, its history. I had a program called The World of Jazz on Channel 2, it aired from the 90’s and stayed for 15 years and it was a big hit back then. I taught Jazz history and its different styles, like the Swing, the Cool Jazz, and the Avant-Garde… Then the different styles that came after that, that nourished the theme like the Latin Jazz of Latin America, that became very popular in the 70’s, the classical Jazz, which is merging classical music with Jazz. Jacques Loussier in France is specialized in Jazz styling Bach music, he is great. Then I decided to have an imprint in this music by creating what we call oriental Jazz, which is a mix between Egyptian music, Pop music and Jazz.

REPRESENTS THE MODERN

MAN WITH ALL HIS PAINS,

HOW DID YOUR PARENTS REACT TO YOUR DECISION? My parents didn’t like my decision at all! My father was not happy about this decision and he blamed my mother for giving me money to buy the drums. He thought that this was the beginning of my rebellious phase. No one in my family is a musician so my choice was very unusual, but eventually they had to accept because that was my choice. The second disaster came when I told them that I am traveling to the States. I have been working on it for years, I wanted to find a way to be among all the Jazz legends and learn from them. Leaving the country at that time was not an easy thing to do, but during Nasser’s time we started promoting the idea of Arab nationals leaving their countries. Then they released a law that if you have an invitation from another Arab country you are allowed to travel. Luckily, one of my friend’s fathers was working in Beirut University, so they gave me my passport for one month and my visa for one week to go to Lebanon. I have been working and making money to save for my big trip since I was 14, and I used to send the money to my friend so when I travel I would have some money in hand. I knew they wouldn’t let me take any

DREAMS

& STRUGGLES many others. One day, my neighbor who is a photographer came and told me that a country singer heard me playing and was interested to meet me in person. When I met him, he invited me to travel with him and his band to record an album in Atlanta. I agreed and in a matter of weeks we had a hit track called, “Reach out of the Darkness”. I was very lucky to have this kind of experience, for I didn’t play any rock music before, and I got to experience this powerful type of music that I am not really used to. Suddenly I found myself touring the country, playing with many people. At that time, you would find a lot of huge names at the same concert; we shared the bill with people like Jimi Hendrix, The Doors, Cream…

YOU SEEM REALLY HAPPY TALKING ABOUT THIS JOURNEY. I discovered when I was young that you have to stick to what you really want to do. I was always committed to do what makes me feel happy, what makes me feel like

LIKE DONIA IN “RHYTHM OF SOUL” Of course, you see the improvising, the saxophone, you have the Egyptian music combined with the feelings, the dancing and the swinging of the Jazz. I also did some medleys for Om Kalthoum, so you hear Om Kalthoum in a modern kind of way that young people would accept to listen to.

WHAT DID YOU LEARN FROM ROY KNAPP? I learned a lot about Jazz, I learned a lot about music, life, history and different things about my idols because he knew them all. I got to learn about their history, their lives, their personalities and how the things that happened in their lives affected them. There is nothing like this experience, I respect the people who know more than I do, I respect the people who taught me everything, That’s why I don’t have any patience with any of my students who doesn’t understand the values or the rules. One time I fired someone, two years later he called me and kept saying, “Thank you for what you taught me, I pray for you every day, I still live on the values you taught me.” Whoever works with me must desire to do something, and value and understand what I am saying and what I am willing to do, because with me they are stars and if you want to be a star you have to respect the audience. That’s the difference between playing Jazz in general and practicing any other kind of Art, because what you get with Jazz is all the rules. With the success of this world many people tend to misuse it, so you might hear a lot of lousy things that fall

under “Jazz music” but they are not. I traveled around the world and performed in many different countries. We did the Jazz festival in South Africa, then in Victoria University, we performed in Nigeria last year, Oman last year, we went to Italy, Greece, Siberia, Nigeria, this year the world music festival in Vienna was nice, we went to Morocco, Moscow opera house and my concerts here always have a wonderful feedback. Yet, it is important to know that you won’t please everybody; if you try to satisfy everybody you’ll end up satisfying no one at all.

DO YOU CONSIDER JAZZ A CULTURAL LUXURY IN EGYPT? No it is not a luxury at all, as a matter of fact, Jazz music came from the African slaves who built the foundation of Jazz. They invented this music to express their anger, sadness and pain asking for their freedom and independence. After that the Europeans added a lot to this African invention that it became a lot deeper and the music started to fill the world. As they say, Jazz is the Africans gift to America and America’s gift to the world. In less than 50 years, Jazz became one of the most famous folk music, something that didn’t happen for around 400 years. This shows that there is something magical about this music, because all the people all around the world are touched by Jazz, and that’s why it is special.

I feel that all people are the same; they all want to live a simple happy life. Good music imposes itself anywhere, sometimes we impose bad music claiming that’s what people want and that’s not true. People want to be happy and they will take what you give them. The more open the society is and the more open the music is, the more we have chances for Art and Culture. Freedom gives us the chance to criticize ourselves so we become better and that only happens with revolution. I remember when I was in America, when we were playing specifically in the south; we used to see some bars hanging signs saying, “No Negros are allowed”, now the American president is a black citizen. Here we are moving backwards because the quality people are leaving the country and we have no qualifications at all. People who have aims and dreams travel to foreign countries where they can achieve these dreams.

THEN IN YOUR OPINION WHAT DO WE LACK? We need to learn to respect each other and to respect our differences. We don’t need to have one opinion, we must know that the best thing in life is freedom and we need to gain our freedom without hurting each other. I remember back in the days Egypt was filled with Armenians, Italians, Christians… and we all lived loving and respecting each other. Girls used to walk in the streets and no one would dare to look at them, what’s happening now is a really bad thing!

THEN DO YOU THINK THERE IS HOPE? There is hope of course! The new generations now have technology and they are open to everything. We need unique, different ideas to nourish our country, but we are still living in bureaucracy we don’t trust the younger generations….

BUREAUCRACY OR BECAUSE AT THE END WE ARE NOT EXPERIENCED ENOUGH?

Of course, but still we don’t value the talents, we tend to cause a lot of problems to whoever stands-alone. We need to give the younger generaDOES IT HAVE A SENSE tions their chance OF REVOLUTION? to take us to a better place. WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO INTRODUCE JAZZ IN EGYPT AFTER RETURNING FROM AMERICA, AND DO YOU BELIEVE EGYPTIANS WERE READY FOR SUCH A MUSICAL SHOCK? HOW CAN YOU EVALUATE THE MUSICAL SCENE IN EGYPT? A lot of nonsense everywhere that’s for sure, but we are always looking in the middle of all that nonsense for someone who is really talented that can make positive steps.

HOW DOES IT FEEL TO BE YEHYA KHALIL? I feel like anybody else! My happiest moment is when I feel I am touching their souls and making them happy. On stage I never plan what to play, I go according to how I feel and I derive these feelings from the audience. I feel that I am special as every one is special his/her own way, I am proud that I touched so many people, that I served the country and the society.

HOW DO YOU SPEND THE DAY OF A CONCERT? I wake up, have my coffee and some breakfast, I go to the gym, if we’re in summer I swim a little bit, if it’s cold I go to the SPA. I refresh myself then I go straight to the venue, make a soundcheck, rehearse with my band and make sure everything is perfect. Then we relax before we go on stage, after that I have dinner with my friends and relax.

HOW DO YOU PREPARE FOR A NEW ALBUM? I don’t prepare for my albums! I

experiment, I record and then I collect some of my tracks and release them in an album.

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START YOUR FOUNDATION FOR JAZZ? I wanted to create my own albums, do my Jazz festivals and let people enjoy the music. Also if I wanted to release a book, a documentary or anything and to help the young talents. I try to do whatever I can positively to help the country.

WHAT IS YOUR NEXT STEP? I have an album next season, a festival next season, more festivals and more travelling all around the world, new places hopefully, and some celebration for life that we are still around making people happy and that’s what makes us happy.

The DIARY of a KundaliniYogini By Sandra Shama Kaur

W

hen I got news that my mother, a 46-year-old tennis player and sports fanatic, had 6 months to live, I was devastated. She was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2007 and in 2011 the cancer spread throughout her entire body reaching her brain. I was in a total state of shock. What was I going to do? Leave the comfortable life that I had created in Canada including my partner, career and friends to take care of my mother who I hadn’t seen for over 3 years? The thought of retuning home brought chills down my spine and the pain of leaving the life that I had built behind was overwhelming. But nevertheless, I made the brave decision to go back home and spend those last precious 6 months with my mother. I have always used exercise as a way to cope with pain and challenge. But seeing mum, my workout partner, lying in bed, barely able to walk to the bathroom, I knew

70 insight

that was no longer an option. I did not have the heart to hop along to the gym, pick up a dosage of adrenaline and come back to her feeling pretty high while she lay there quivering in bed. And that’s how I got into yoga. Since there was no way I could leave the house, I signed up to an online yoga website and made the commitment to have a daily home practice: a commitment that I have honored until today (4 years later). I took my yoga everywhere, even when I was staying at the hospital with mum. I remember waking up an hour or two before breakfast, tiptoeing on my yoga mat and diving into a silent practice, secretly praying she would not wake up and cause disturbance. When Mum passed away, on June 24 2011, I was dumbfounded. I did not understand how all of a sudden I could not hold, touch, hear and speak to her again. I could feel

my heart crumble. I felt extreme sadness. I was intensely grieving. And that’s when I drew upon my lessons from yoga. I would lie in bed and focus on my breath, inhale 5 counts, exhale 5 counts, inhale 10 counts, exhale 10 counts, until I fell asleep. I would also visualize my mother perched up on my right shoulder, sitting like a miniature tweety bird with a big round face and legs daggling down my shoulder. It felt safe & comforting. And I was grateful to yoga for helping me heal. Soon after, I was encouraged by friends to start teaching. I taught a blend of Hatha and Vinyassa but it wasn’t until August 2012 that I did my formal training in Kundalini Yoga. I will forever be grateful to Darla Hueske, the only other Kundalini Yoga teacher in Egypt who directed me to the Kundalini Research Institute in New Mexico & Yogi Bhajan, the genius behind this special form of yoga.

Post the 27-day-long residential course where we engaged in 18 hour-long days practicing yoga, meditating for intense periods and chanting the weirdest mantras – I was totally transformed. My vision became clearer and I had the will power to do what I couldn’t do before. So I resigned from my post at the AUC, ended a relationship with a very good guy who just wasn’t right for me and started my very own business; YallaYoga, the center that seeks to create a community of yogis who celebrate conscious living, good health and serve one another.

The Meaning of Yoga

Yoga means union or to “yoke.” Oftentimes our bodies desire something, to eat or sleep for instance, while the minds desire something else such as to work or think more. Yoga brings balance to the opposing desires of the body and mind and connects them through the heart center. This is why yoga ‘yokes’ joins or creates a bridge between body, mind and soul. Yoga is not only about physical movement. Sage Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras break down yoga in 8 limbs or branches; Moral & Ethical Codes of Living, Posture or physical movement, Breathing Practices, Withdraw of Senses, Eye Focus, Concentration & Meditation. Further to that, the Bhavagad Gita, an ancient scripture breaks down yoga into four types: Karma yoga (the yoga of selfless services), Hatha yoga (the yoga of action), Gyan yoga (the yoga of wisdom) and Bakhti yoga (the yoga of devotion). Today, what most of us know is yoga falls under the branch of

Hatha Yoga with a focus on Asana practice of physical movement, which encompasses various other forms from the traditional like Kundalini, Sivananda and Satyananada to the modern like Vinyassa, Ashtanga, Moksha, Iyengar, Bikram and so on. When we choose and stick to a yoga path, our choice is often influenced by our temperament, intensity of lifestyle, personality and injuries. For those who are usually on the go and with excessive energy, a gentle practice of Sivananda, Satyananada or Hatha would serve them best. By contrast for those who tend to feel lazy, easily fatigued and lose their will power to get things done, a vigorous practice of Ashtanga, Vinyassa or Moksha would serve them well. Kundalini yoga as taught by Yogi Bhajan is one style of yoga that is fit for all. It is the yoga for householders, for people who have to cope with the daily challenges and stresses of holding jobs, raising families, and managing businesses. In Kundalini Yoga we harness the mental, physical, and nervous energies of the body and put them under the domain of the will, which is the instrument of the soul. This technology combines breath, mudra, eyefocus, mantra, body locks, and postures to balance the glandular system, strengthen the nervous system, expand lung capacity, and purifiy the blood. It brings balance to the body, mind, and soul. The most important thing is your experience. It goes right to your heart. No words can replace your experience. Your mind may accept the words or it may not,

but your consciousness will not accept just words. (Yogi Bhajan, Master of Kundalini Yoga) Today, I am conscious that my passion lies in the experience that Kundalini yoga has to offer, an experience that I wish to share with those who are ready for a transformation. But, I will always be grateful to the years I spent practicing other forms of yoga which provided me with the readiness to recognize that Kundalini yoga is the path for me. Thus, my mission is to make various forms of yoga accessible to all walks of life to offer yogis the power to choose their own path. My take away: Life can be lived joyfully even through pain of separation. While some of us may prefer to take the short cut and engage in unhealthy behaviors and habits that lead to dependence. The longer and harder route will certainly heal the pain once and for all and only when we are healed, can we truly heal others and make a wholesome impact.

Shaving 101

ummer means getting to wear dresses, skirts, and shorts (exciting), but with your breezy new wardrobe comes the often-dreaded task of a regular shaving routine. A quick flick of a razor in the shower wouldn't be such a big deal if it weren't for the hard-to-ignore side effects—little cuts, rash-like irritation, and annoying red bumps can be a hazard of the job. To avoid these shaving faux pas, here are the five can't-skip expert tricks that make the difference between a bad shave and the silky smooth legs of your dreams. They'll thank you later!

BANISH THE BURN. Razor burn is a temporary skin irritation caused by shaving. It first appears as a slight red rash, and it can also develop into itchy, inflamed bumps right around the hair follicle. The main cause? Shaving too forcefully or pushing down on the skin with a dull blade. And the razor you're using makes a difference— Your best solution is something with five blades. Some people think that seems scary, but more blades actually means less likelihood of nicks and cuts because the blades are spaced more closely together. Luckily if you already have razor burn, all is not lost. Rinse the area with cool water and stay away from any products that contain alcohol, which can further irritate the skin. If the rash is still very irritated, use an over-the-

counter hydrocortisone cream for a few days to help calm the redness and itching.

PREVENT INGROWING HAIR WITH A LITTLE PREP. An ingrown hair is one that doesn't grow sufficiently out of its follicle opening and continues to grow underneath the surface of the skin. This can be caused by the angle of hair growth or by excess dead skin in the area. They feel annoying and they definitely don't look cute, so you've got to take action. "Regular, gentle exfoliation will help to remove and reduce any flaky skin around the hair follicle opening and can begin to release any in-growing hairs. If the ingrown doesn't go away, or it becomes painful, you'll need to see your doctor to treat it. A benzoyl peroxide wash, an antibiotic lotion, and a mild hydrocortisone cream are all possible treatments that your doctor may recommend.

DON’T SKIP THE SHAVING CREAM. Unless you're using a two-in-one razor with built-in gel, then you should use shaving cream. It helps the razor glide over your skin, softens hairs making them easier to shave, and it's a good visual to see where you've already shaved and

where you may have missed. “But we can all DIY it with whatever we have on hand, right?” Not so fast. While body wash, shampoo, or conditioner may seem like a good substitute, especially if you're in a pinch, it is not recommended to use them. Even ordinary bar soap can clog the razor and cause dryness and flaking of the skin.

TIMING IS EVERYTHING. After you get in the shower, wait at least two to three minutes before shaving. This will ensure that the hair is hydrated, making it significantly softer and easier to remove. It also reduces the feeling of tugging and pulling on the hair during shaving. Our advice? Spend those first few minutes washing your face, shampooing your hair, and putting in your conditioner—then leave it in while you're shaving for extra absorption time.

KEEP YOUR MOVEMENTS SHORT AND SWEET. One mistake lots of people make is taking long strokes, going all the way from your ankle to your knee. (Raise your hand if you thought this is what you're supposed to do. Yeah, us too.) It actually works best to shave in smaller strokes without pushing too hard. If you feel the need to push hard to get a closer shave, then it's probably time to switch your blade refill.

TRAVEL MORE Spend Less W

hether you’re traveling solo, with the family or taking a romantic trip for two, money is always an important thing to consider during the trip-planning process. From scoring the best online deals to maximizing extras at hotels, here are 10 ways to save money on your next vacation.

1. Be flexible

Whether it’s regarding the dates you’re traveling or the cities you’re going to, flexibility is a great way to take advantage of the best travel deals available. Let the deal be your inspiration. You’re going to get a lot more mileage out of your money if you’re flexible. If you can be flexible, you’ll get a lot more bang for your buck.

2. Travel during “shoulder seasons”

You probably already know about peak travel times, like summer, when everyone is looking to getaway. But there are also offpeak times when flights and hotel rooms are much less expensive. However, there’s usually a reason that a destination is considered off-peak—like, ahem, hurricane season. So another money-saving option is to travel during “shoulder season,” which is between

the two. For instance, April through May and mid-August through October are ideal times to travel to Europe, when the weather’s still nice but there aren’t too many tourists. A lot of times [the travel seasons] will follow the school year, which isn’t super-convenient for families, but sometimes it’s worth taking the kids out of school for a week for a new experience. Each region has different seasons, but if you know how to work around them, you’re more likely to find great deals.

3. Keep extra fees and exchange rates in mind Make sure you consider exchange rates when searching for a destination. And don’t forget to look at airline fees as well—like who charges for bags and who doesn’t. Always keep in mind what you’re paying on top of travel expenses, adding that bag expenses can be a big one.

4. Use social networking

When a blizzard hit the East Coast during the 2010 holiday season, many stranded travelers got flights via the airlines’ Twitter feeds and Facebook pages, which is a useful way to find bargains, too. Social media is a great way to hear about deals. And they’re

coming to you, so you’re not having to do all the work but don’t stop there. Sign up for email fare alerts, which scour all the main sites for cheap fares to and from certain cities or on particular dates.

5. Buy package deals

When you book your hotel packaged with your airfare, you’re gaining access to deals that aren’t available to the general public. Hotels will have a rate they aren’t publishing publicly, and airlines will have a fare they aren’t making available to the general public, so agencies will combine the two to come up with a really hot deal. All-inclusive hotel packages can also be a great way to control your expenses. You’re not pulling out your wallet all the time for meals, drinks, entertainment, activities…it’s all included, plus, some resorts even have offers where kids stay and play for free. And most of them have kids clubs, where the adults can be by the pool while the kids are having fun at the jungle gym with their buddies.

SOCIAL MEDIA IS A GREAT WAY TO HEAR ABOUT DEALS

6. Know your local airline hub Stick with the airline that has the closest headquarters to your home, as it will offer the most flights (and best deals) from your city. Look to see which airline is strong in your area and what vacation packages they offer. They’ll have some good options for you.

7. Stay at familyfriendly hotels Whether it’s a matter of extra amenities or

ample room size, certain hotels are much more family-friendly than others. You should search for the one that has the most perks to suit your interests and needs. Some hotel chains have extra services for kids. Fee-free perks can help you save money in the long run, so always consider what’s being offered to guests before you book a room.

8. Ask the concierge for the inside scoop As soon as you get to your hotel, ask your

concierge for deals and upgrades, especially if you’re traveling with kids. If you can go from a one-bedroom to a two-bedroom,

with kids that’s fantastic. But Hockin insists these types of deals aren’t limited to just your hotel. Always ask the concierge if they know of places that do discounts for families at restaurants, places where Tuesday nights kids eat free, for instance.

9. Sign up for local discount websites You may already receive emails from that

offer deals based on where you live, but you can also get top deals for the cities you’re planning on visiting, as well. Sign up a couple of weeks before you go so you can get coupons for dining and local attractions. And for families, there’s Mamapedia, which has family-oriented and kids deals, or two-for-one deals. It doesn’t just have to be for the city where you live.

10. Stock up on groceries One of the biggest expenses while trave-

ling is food costs, but you can save serious cash by hitting up the grocery store for snacks and easy breakfast options. If you’re renting a car and you have the capability to go to a local supermarket, stock up on snacks. If you have a microwave [in your hotel room], instant oatmeal in the morning makes a big difference.

“Money is always an important thing to consider during the tripplanning process”

MAGICIEN DE LA NUIT Biography

Henri Marie Raymond de Toulouse-Lautrec Monfa was born in Albi, Tarn in the Midi-Pyrenees region of France, the firstborn child of an aristocratic family that had fallen on hard times, the Toulouse-Lautrecs were feeling the effects of the inbreeding of past generations, and Henri suffered from a number of congenital health conditions attributed to this tradition of inbreeding. At the age of 13 Henri fractured his left thighbone, and at 14, the right. The breaks did not heal properly. Modern physicians attribute this to an unknown genetic disorder. His legs ceased to grow, so that as an adult he was only 1.54 m. Physically unable to participate in most of the activities typically enjoyed by men of his age, Toulouse-Lautrec immersed himself in his art. He became an important Post-Impressionist painter, art nouveau illustrator, and lithographer; and recorded in his works many details of the late-19th-century bohemian lifestyle in Paris. Toulouse-Lautrec also contributed a number of illustrations to the magazine Le Rire during the mid-1890s.

Paris

Toulouse-Lautrec was drawn to Montmartre, an area of Paris famous for its bohemian lifestyle and for being the haunt of artists, writers, and philosophers. When Moulin Rouge cabaret opened its doors, Toulouse-Lautrec was commissioned to produce a series of posters. Thereafter, the cabaret reserved a seat for him, and displayed his paintings. Toulouse-Lautrec spent much time in brothels, where he was accepted by the prostitutes and madams to such an extent that he often moved in. He shared the lives of the women who made him their confidant, painting and drawing them at work and at leisure. Lautrec recorded their intimate relationships, which were often lesbian. A favourite model was a red-haired prostitute called Rosa la Rouge from whom he allegedly contracted syphilis.

Death

An alcoholic for most of his adult life, Toulouse-Lautrec was placed in a sanatorium shortly before his death. After his death, his mother and his art dealer, promoted his art. His mother contributed funds for a museum to be built in Albi, his birthplace, to house his works. He died from complications due to alcoholism and syphilis at the family estate in Malrome, fewer than three months before his 37th birthday. He is buried in Verdelais, Gironde, a few kilometers from the Chateau of Malrome, where he died.

Interesting Facts

-Throughout his career, which spanned less than 20 years, Toulouse-Lautrec created 737 canvases, 275 watercolours, 363 prints and posters, 5,084 drawings, some ceramic and stained glass work, and an unknown number of lost works. -Toulouse-Lautrec is known along with Cezanne, Van Gogh, and Gaugin as one of the greatest painters of the PostImpressionist period. Yet, his treatment of his subject matter, whether as portraits, scenes of Parisian nightlife, or intimate studies, has been described as both sympathetic and dispassionate. - Many of his works are best described as drawings in coloured paint. -The invention of the Tremblement de Terre is attributed to Toulouse-Lautrec, a potent mixture containing half absinthe and half cognac. -Toulouse-Lautrec’s last words reportedly were: “Le vieux con!” (“Old fool!”) 80 insight
