a moment with OUR GORGEOUS COVER MODEL
jILLIAN LIEBER A sparkling personality with a completely transitional look, Jillian Lieber graces the cover of our June issue in spectacular model form! Thanks to Kristin with Stars Model Management we landed another jaw-dropping cover model, and she took the time to tell us a little more about the woman inside the model. How long have you been modeling? I have been modeling for a little over four and a half years. Tell us what got you started in modeling… I’ve always had a dream to be a model since I was in middle school. I was the one everyone picked on, because I was smaller than them. It definitely damaged my self esteem until I was in high school, when I finally decided I could try it out. I haven’t looked back since.
What is your favorite color? I really love the color lilac, I also love blues. What is your favorite food? I loooove pasta! A healthy body is important as a model, how do you keep yourself fit and happy? To me, moderation is key. I try and eat as clean as I can, but sometimes I’ll have to give in and eat something sweet now and then. Shhh…
What do love most about Where were you born and being a model? where did you grow up? Meeting new people is I was born and raised in one of the best things a small town in California about being a model. I called Lincoln. have met one of my best friends and even my 13

boyfriend through work!! Most of the people I work with are really sweet and wonderful, and make my job worth doing!! What do you see as the biggest challenges? I think the biggest challenge is doing this job, but still being comfortable in your own skin. You’re always being commented on, either good or bad. So you definitely are putting yourself out there for judgment. If you don’t have thick skin, it can really start to hurt you. Do you have a favorite clothing item or accessory? High. Waisted. Jeans. They pair with just about anything and add a little bit of edge to your outfit. And yes, there’s a difference between those and mom jeans. ;) How did you prepare for this cover shoot with Inspirare? Luckily I’ve worked with
Inspirare before, but I usually will Google the company to get a feel for what look they like, the various clothing choices, etc. If you met the designers, We are Submarine, what would you tell them? Not only were your designs fun to wear, but I definitely wanted to take some of them home to add to my own wardrobe! Keep it up!! What does fashion mean to you? Fashion means having your own unique style, and loving what you wear when you leave the house. If you’re comfortable and feel good, then you’re doing it right! If you could tell the world one thing about Jillian Lieber, what would it be? I’m not as girly as I seem. I grew up living the tomboy lifestyle, and I can’t give it up.

GIRL OF THE MONTH
Ashley Sixto Miami Written by Abigail Colyer
Ashley Sixto is the fabulous, sunglasses-clad blogger keeping the interweb of fashion up to date with all her style excursions in the Miami sun. Having only launched her blog a year ago with her (very cute) boyfriend, Adrian, as a platform for her friends to read her style and trend insight, she has quickly wowed fans from all over with her summery style and impeccable flair. Each week, we logon eagerly to her blog for her comfortable but chic fashions and beach ready sun kissed hair. Ashley makes us all ready to shop for our next Miami vacation!

How much fun is it blogging with your boyfriend in tow?
We love the style boards on your blog! With that in mind, what pairings do you think are this summer’s “must haves”? My perfect “summer set” would be: Backless Maxi Dress Panama Hat [Red] Palazzo Pants Gladiator Sandals (I’m talking knee-high!) White. White. White. Everything white! Cobalt blue bikini Funky one-piece swimsuit
What item of clothing can you not live without? My white blazer
I’d be lying if I said it hasn’t brought us closer together, but I’m not one to be cliché. I’m so much more comfortable in front of the camera when he’s there and he’s a great person to bounce ideas off of. It’s a great learning experience for the both of us.
How has living in Miami affected your personal style and outlook on fashion? Because of the hot Miami weather, it limits the amount of pieces you can wear at once without dying of heat. We’ve got summer year round, so I don’t have the luxury of being able to layer multiple pieces, at least not during the day. It’s taught me to be very selective in the items of clothing I purchase and wear and at what times.

The Jewel of June 37
The Jewel of June By Pearl Michaelson, Inspirare Beauty Editor
H
ot summer nights are amongst us, so as you roam the steamy streets, fiercely stand your ground as the sexiest gal around with accenting bold jewel-tones. The prized look this season lies with daring colors. Bat your eyes at the hunk across the room in style as you ditch the traditional black cateye, using a deep teal liner instead. Coat your smoochers with a rich plum or fuchsia to add a bold pop of color to your look for your fun girls-night-out. It’s all about the accent pieces to your makeup look this season, and to add the fun to your days in the sun, a bold pop of color to your eyes and lips is the way to go.
You’re soaking up the sun’s rays on your yacht, or some variation of that fantasy, so your skin needs the bare minimum coverage. Don’t hide behind globs of foundation as it sweats in rivers down your face in the smoldering heat. Tinted moisturizer evens out skin-tones and textures and gives you the nutrition your skin needs without the excess coverage. There are so many beauty tricks to make you the prized jewel amongst a treasure chest of beauties this summer. Don’t be afraid of color. Nature produces the bluest blues and the richest reds, so why shouldn’t we celebrate the season’s thriving beauty by dressing our looks with its current trending shades. The ultimate fashion show and inspiration surrounds us with bursting colors in fullswing. We’ll be fanning ourselves over here, because when you don those hues, you’re bringing the heat. Also, soften this makeup look for work
with a mellowed out version to help brighten your day under the fluorescent lights. Used moderately, you’ll be getting more visitors at your cubicle than usual. I mean, Tom sure does look good in those pants… Focus, ladies. Emerald green or royal blue eyeliner used on the lower lash line is a trick used to brighten your look without looking like your stepping out to go clubbing on lunch break. You could also go with a thick lip gloss or a lip stain to add the drama of color in an accessible way that makes sense to others in your workfield, giving you the professional look to match your stellar work ethic. Lastly, its date night and you’re meeting your sweetie after work. There’s no time to rush home to refresh your beauty shot, so work’s bathroom will have to suffice. You brought your bag of beauty supplies to help you ----as you quickly apply a shade of burgundy wine to match your lovely cheers at dinner. The
boldness of this pairs nicely with the summer shades and is smoky enough to seduce the best of them. Glide on a bold matte lipstick and blot to secure the color, or use a rich berry lip stain to ensure it won’t smear onto your mate during dessert hours. For all my single ladies- you’ll be a shining beacon to all the hotties around town during summer nights out with the exotic jeweltones inspiring them to fetch your name and number. Whether you’re downtown or vacationing in Morocco, don’t forget the Altoids because no one can resist a sexy, smoldering eye and rich lip. While we enjoy a sizzling, romantic love-affair with the sun’s sensuous kisses, leaving us with a beautiful, bronzed glow, be the Jewel of June as you accent your look with rich jeweltones. By abiding this summer’s shining advice, you’ll be the most valuable jewel as you rock the town.

Raw Beauty
Mikaila Jewelry Design 47
Raw Beauty Written by Abigail Freeman Colyer Mikaila Kalinowski, the namesake of Mikaila Jewelry Design, does much more than her label indicates. With her extensive creativity and innate ability to design and create pieces that are both beautiful and raw, Mikaila is not only a designer, but a true craftswoman. She uses rough minerals, including agates, gems, turquoise, onyx, and seamlessly sets them in sterling silver,
creating a beautiful juxtaposition between the rough edges of the minerals and the smooth casings of the silver. Mikaila Jewelry Design is based in Portland, Oregon, where she has created a business out of her intimate studio, which matches the personality of jewelry: the beauty within the imperfection of the natural world. The workspace is a shared studio with artists of other mediums and equips the crafters with torches and individual space for their own work and
tools. With such artistic surroundings, Mikaila explains that the beauty of the space lies in the shared creativity of others and the giant window of natural light that inspires much of her designs. Mikaila, originally from San Francisco, got her start in jewelry making and metalsmithing during high school and went on to work for San Francisco based creative metal artists Aimee Golant and David Cassella. What makes Mikaila Jewelry Design so special? It is that every piece is handmade by Mikaila
herself and is crafted to absolute perfection. She has a keen eye for detail that reminds us that fashion can be art and what we wear, clothing or jewelry, is a means of self expression, and even further a means of artistic expression. Vancouver, Canada A coastal seaport in the heart of British Columbia this metropolitan city is the most ethnically diverse in all of Canada… which means the fashion is equally so, right?! With cooler winters and warmer summers, and many temperate days in between, these Canadians have the opportunity to really stretch their fashionable creativity with layers. This absolutely breathtaking city has been ranked regularly as one of the most liveable cities in the world, and the resident’s closets can attest. Behind The fashion
The Man Behind the Fashion Curtain Written by Pearl Michaelson
When life threw Jason Peskin with Project Ethos lemons, he made Lemondrops and served them up to the party! Starting his own fashion, art and music promotional company, this driven soul set his sights high and to a unique angle when embarking on his journey to the top. Starting with only one fashion designer who asked for Peskin’s assistance on a fashion show, this megamind turned that single inquiry into a shining and distinctive business, even showcasing 14 different artists in his first
event! He explains the audience for his vision, “I want to attract everyone from retail store buyers, to art gallery curators, celebrities, and the hard working blue collar consumer.” This breadth of attraction makes Project Ethos a valuable asset to the fashion industry because it has everyone talking about all the incredible avenues of artistic exploration. The man behind the idea grew up deeply involved with the arts. His father a saxophone and woodwind musician and
his mother a photographer, the artistic drive came as no genetic surprise. Peskin states, “I took their passion for artistic excellence and brought that to my love for the business. I crashed and burned in the beginning and learned the ropes the hard way.” All of the hard work and devotion to his business plan paid off when the realization of his creativity was celebrated in Project Ethos’ artist showcases. One of the attributes that has enabled Peskin to be so successful with Project Ethos is, in his words, “My ability to see people and situations for what they are and calling them out. Time is precious.” His matchless aptitude to cut to the chase in order to see the progression of artists’ careers through the demonstration of their work at his events has brought his Project Ethos to the forefront of the fashion industry for marketing the latest trends. Peskin has always been a business man. Owning his own advertising agency in the print industry in 2005, Peskin felt worn out and no longer stimulated by his business. He tells us, “After two years of being in business I was already burned out. My true passion stemmed from a few concerts I produced shortly after high school. I wanted to go back to that edgy, creative part of me.” The inspiration behind his business plan 64
might have hibernated during his work in advertising, but it came alive in full-effect with his creation of Project Ethos in 2005. He continues, “Using creative inspiration, business experience, spirituality and a ‘can-do’ attitude helped me.” Peskin’s gusto for his work has proven to be the ingredient to his business cocktail that attracts so many visitors to his events. The success of the events is so imperative because with the success of the events comes familiarity and growth of the artists they showcase. Aside from his creative streak, further inspiration and motivation for his work comes from his family. Peskin opens up on this subject, telling us, “My family, mainly my mom and sister are the biggest supporters of what I do.” Not only is Peskin driven by his own hunger for the success of his artistic business creation, but his family bands together to motivate his career endeavors to the next level. It’s no wonder Project Ethos’ events are taking the entertainment world by storm! When it comes to fashion, Project Ethos is no stranger to the runway, putting on fashion shows encouraging designers’ works and offering them the artistic recognition they deserve. They have put on many shows, but Peskin’s favorite so far has to be, “March 2013. I let someone else put their passion into choosing the designers and models almost exclusively. I was shocked at
what they did. Sometimes you have to let go of something to grow.” As Peskin steps aside for others to contribute to his dream, this collaboration of creative production has made his business even more unique and successful. It just goes to show that not any single person can do the waltz alone. To showcase your designs at a future Project Ethos event, Peskin fills us in, “They need to have apparent skill, buzz, and a small budget to put into paying for good models.” In order to get your designs in this VIP party, your craft has to walk the walk and talk the talk. It’s important to have not only the artistic ability, but also the business acumen to give your label the recognition needed to be part of fashion shows. The future of Project Ethos looks bright as their mission idea dances with continual creativity and excitement. The growth opportunities for this company are endless, and Peskin details the specific areas of growth he would like see, stating, “Our website
will grow. The internet is the key to our growth as it has connected the world in an instant.” Through their web series and internet outreach, Project Ethos will keep shining amongst marketing outlet competitors. It’s a fun and truly beautiful way of showcasing fashion in a meaningful way. He continues, “By growing our platform, we extend the reach of our clients. Reaching our potential is everything because that accomplishment fills the soul every day.” The determined mindset Project Ethos has is a strong cocktail of art, business and strength of character. With a concoction like that, Jason Peskin makes us drunk on fashion as Project Ethos steals the spotlight from his fashion promotion contemporaries. To see the creative genius in his work, be sure to attend one of Project Ethos’ events. See you there! To find out more about Jason Peskin and Project Ethos visit: www.projectethos.tv/

Behind The Scenes
Behind the Scenes,
In front of the fog Photography courtesy of Frederick Steven Price
This issue’s behind the scenes shots show the lovely spring weather we have here on the coast of San Francisco. While most of you are starting to sport those little summer shorts, we are still wrapped in scarves and hoodies praying the fog will lift long enough for us to get a sunny shot! The designer We Are Submarine is no doubt surfing in the sun on the other side of the world where they create these masterpieces, down under… in Australia, in case you didn’t catch that.
Our stunning cover model Jillian was a complete trooper, trying to hide the shivering fact that she was literally shaking in her Jeffrey Campbell’s. The hair and makeup teams were spectacular at fighting off the frizz and damage that mist can create on a foundation, all the while smiling their perfectly colored lips. The amazing jewelry designer, Leah Aripotch, who is no stranger to this world after showing her designs on the runway at New York Fashion Week, also braved the
weather in order to showcase her amazing work on this dazzling model. Jeffry Raposas, the head photographer, and his team are spectacular fashion know-it-alls and we here at Inspirare are so proud to have their wonderful work grace our pages. Please enjoy a little behind the scenes action… and see what we do for the sake of fashion!

FASHION EVENTS
A Panel of Fashion Greats Written by Adrienne Glenn Photography by Frederick Steven Price It isn’t often one gets the opportunity to sit and listen to a high level group of fashion professionals discuss and ruminate over the ins and outs of the industry. In May 2013, that rarity presented itself in the form of a panel discussion at the Academy of Art University’s Morgan Auditorium on Post Street in the heart of San Francisco. On stage sat four people who cumulatively have decades upon decades of fashion industry experience. Gladys Perint Palmer (featured earlier here in our issue), who has been living in the world of fashion since she graduated from college, moderates the discussion and asked some spectacular questions that gave insight and led these three featured speakers to impart industry knowledge that we could’ve only dreamed of. The guest speakers were Max and Lubov Azria of BCBGMaxAzria and the world renowned journalist/fashion editor, Suzy Menkes. Each of these people bring to the table such incredible experience. Max and Lubov having created and grown this major fashion umbrella on the west coast of the U.S. brought us insight to people’s opinions of the fashion abilities on this edge of the country. They also shared with us some fascinating information on their design processes and seasonal collection organization. Max’s
incredibly cool personality charmed us with his anecdotes, and Lubov his partner in life and business is kind and humorous with a very quick mind, as well as a deep love for their children. Suzy who is a terrifically funny and gentle woman, shared with us with stories of celebrities, designers and the many fascinating things she has seen all over the world. She has an amazing insight into this industry and you can tell she truly loves fashion to the core. There was much talk of what the fashion industry does to the environment and the ways we need to start doing our best to make processes less damaging. A very interesting discussion between audience member and the panelists came up about the price of items and the consumer’s interest in only getting the cheapest price versus quality, less-harmful goods that last much longer. It is a problem that mass markets have brought to this industry, and everyone agreed the solution is in creating customer awareness of the importance of quality over quantity. The chance to get up and ask these greats questions was taken up by quite a few attendees and brought about some very interesting discussion topics. What a great opportunity to see into the minds that helped create the fashion world we rotate in today... thanks to AAU and the guest speakers for taking the time to share with us just how great, intelligent and creative FASHION can be. 92

Gladys Perint Palmer Lipstick on Paper Written by Adrienne Glenn

Gladys Perint Palmer
Lipstick on Paper
Another wonderful day in the city of San Francisco. I sit on a white leather couch with stunning 11x17 illustrations, sketched by the elegant woman sitting in front of me, hanging stylishly behind my head. I try to camouflage my excited nerves with a huge smile. Glady Perint Palmer, a woman with a fashion bio too long to tackle in such a small article, finishes up some of her tasks to sit down and share herself with little ol’ me. She currently holds the position as the Executive Director of the School of Fashion at Academy of Art University, but that is only the tip of the proverbial iceberg that is GPP’s expertise and skill. This woman is an illustrator, a human and... an epic.
As a journalist, I generally shy away from writing about an article from a personal perspective; but in this case, because I was so personally affected by the brief moment, I have decided to break my own rule. To date, that 40 minute conversation has been one of the most inspirational moments in my career. To be able to hear the stories from a person with such incredible longevity in the world of fashion, and who continues to find interesting ways to reinvent her talents after about five decades in this industry, is just incredible. This opportunity opened up so much for me, it showed me that my dreams of being a part of something that I have such immense passion for is indeed not just a possibility, but completely feasible. This day introduced me to fashion potentiality. Gladys Perint Palmer is tastefully understated as she sits across from me in her simple crew neck black tee, which is the favorite item of clothing in her entire closet. Even though her favorite designers are Galliano, Gaultier and Vivenne 98
99
Westwood, she prefers to reside in a simple cotton tee. Her black wardrobe is ornamented with a stunning blue chunky necklace that practically glows. Gladys’ elegance isn’t what adorns her on the outside, it comes from within (the British accent doesn’t hurt either). A woman who is courteous, thoughtfully listens to each word you say, but doesn’t hesitate to just be herself in the right moment; GPP is as kind as she is successful. I saw that genuine humanity when she began discussing something rather private, and graciously looked at me asking, “Is this on the record?” Being a journalist, that is the moment you want to say “of course it isn’t” and proceed to tell-all, but the amount of respect I hold for this woman keeps me witholding the humor that followed shortly thereafter. I will tell you this, after decades of being at the top of her industry and always being on “The List” this woman doesn’t stop being real, and that created in me an admiration that will not easily be sullied. GPP started drawing at a very early age and went on to attend school at the St. Martins School of Art (which now hails by the name Central St. Martins School of Art) in England. She then went on to continue her art studies at Parsons School of Design in New York City, where shortly after graduating she began drawing for publishing giants such Harper’s Bazaar and Vogue. She told me she was one of the lucky ones, an artist who began to get paid for her craft and make a living at it early on in life. While so many artist’s struggle, it is obvious that life in the fashion and art industry is exactly what Gladys was created for. A true artist she tells me that some days she never messes up and creates perfect illustration after perfect illustration, but some days all she finishes with is a waste bin full of crumpled papers. I have a feeling that most of her days are on the successful side, or how else could she have managed art exhibits in multiple countries, writing and editing for some of the biggest publications worldwide, creating illustrations for
the top fashion weeks and not only contributing to many books, but coming out with a few of her own! Her most recent book which will be out by the time this issue is published is titled, Adam & Yves. She tells me it is the story of fashion from the very beginning... which I, of course, will absolutely have to have! As if everything she has accomplished wasn’t enough, in 1998 the Fashion Book named her one of 500 people of influence in fashion since 1860 and she has a day! San Francisco’s ex-Mayor Gavin Newsom named May 24th, Gladys Perint Palmer day. When asked how she celebrates her day, she said her favorite celebration is to have a private dinner with her husband in Paris. Ahhhh, sounds Tres Magnifique. Another incredibly admirable trait in this fashion maven is that she doesn’t hesitate to share her gifts with others. When asked what she loves about teaching, she thoughtfully pulled a photocopied article off of her desk and handed it to me with a quote circled in black ink that she felt described her feelings on teaching. This quote was by Janos Starker, a renowned cellist who passed away recently, and it reads, “I personally cannot perform without teaching, and I cannot teach without performing. When you have to explain what you are doing, you discover what you are really doing.” This truly does define her... a woman who still can only put down the charcoal nub long enough to teach someone how to do it. When I asked Gladys what she has left to conquer, she pulled me over to her computer to show me her newest project. After showing me a few things on her Facebook page and telling me “I love Facebook. I’m addicted to it,” it is clear she has already tackled the internet, which so many artists shy away from. This woman is fearless and adaptable like no other. She then shows me her newest venture, live drawing. For those budding illustrators, GPP is now taking the 100
time to show firsthand how she does it, in video form for ALL to learn from. Truly a pioneer of the artistic world, this woman will stop at nothing... and again, the admiration grew to monumental levels. That lovely day Gladys Perint Palmer truly created a fan for life in me. In the interest of learning something about a public figure that no one else knows, I always conclude my interview with saying, “Tell us one thing about you that we don’t know and can’t find anywhere on the internet.” This day was no different. She shared with me the secret that she is so incredibly travel phobic, even after traveling all over the world her entire life, that she has to start mentally preparing for a trip at least 3 days before the trip begins. Truthfully, without knowing it she had shared so much more with me that day. She had shared with me her obvious undying passion for what she does. Never complaining, never quitting and never stopping to create something new and beautiful by putting that lipstick to the paper and creating something spectacular for us to look at and feel.

tHIRD PLACE WINNERS The third place winners of Inspirare’s Spring 2013 Global Fashion Design Competition take their (well earned) place in the sun. In the following pages, we introduce you to them and share a little bit more about who they are and what is behind their winning designs.

Tsvety Fashion Tsvety McAuliffe began her formal career as a fashion designer in Europe, where she graduated in 2004 with a degree in Fashion and Textile Design from the New Bulgarian University in the Bulgarian capital of Sofia. After several years working as a textile designer for the Italian Designer Roberto Badjie, where she painted silk for famous European runway collections, Tsvety decided to launch on her own brand, Tsvety Fashion. Her line is as artistic as it is fashionable. With her self-designed, picturesque textiles and a keen ability to compliment the female body, her pieces are one of a kind and truly made with love. Her Fall/Winter 2013 collection is inspired by her fascination with colorful patterns in nature, particularly peacock feathers. With the peacock feather representing pride, immortality, and glory, Tsvety hopes that her collections poses those same qualities, “timeless, classic silhouettes, irresistible beauty and exotic taste… pieces that are exotic and interesting, without sacrificing that sophisticated edge in the process.” Learn more about her: www.tsvetyusa.com Facebook: www.facebook.com/tsvetyfashiondesign

JessE Thaxton Jesse Thaxton grew up in a small Texas town, giving her lots of time to dream and develop a fascination with city buildings and people’s personal stories. She wanted her story and dreams to have a worldwide contribution, not monetary, strictly inspirational. Her main inspiration has been Science Fiction movies, including Fifth Element and Blade Runner. During high school, she began creating costumes for comic conventions, leading her to pursue Theatrical Costume Design, after a short stint in International Agriculture, and finally Fashion Design. Upon graduating from The University of North Texas, her passion drove her to begin her own line, Melancholic Design. For her third place Inspirare Competition winning design, Jesse was inspired by her Sci-Fi roots, Sean Young as Rachel in Blade Runner, the early works of Christian Dior, abandoned Buildings and 60’s British Invasion Menswear. She has an amazing ability to seamlessly blend futuristic concepts with an “old-world look; harkening to how we are—always pressing forwards, but still feeling so very nostalgic for the past.” Learn more about Jesse here: www.jessethaxton.com Facebook: www.facebook.com/melancholicdesign

Luba Gnasevych Luba Gnasevych, the Ukranian born, American designer, began in fashion working alongside designers, including Ralph Rucci and Derek Lam. She finally launched her own line, Luba Gnasevych Inc., in 2011, after receiving her Bachelor’s Degree from the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York. Luba draws inspiration from geometric shapes, sharp edges, modern architecture, future forward concepts, human and animal anatomy, and insects, just to name a few, and impeccably translates and mirrors them into fashion, keeping in mind the female form and using the female body as a canvas. Her designs are finely detailed, avant garde, yet wearable and perfect for the woman wanting to push open the fashion envelope. AILEEN LEE Aileen Lee began designing as a child, employing her paper dolls as models. Even as she grew into a talented designer, with her parents urging, she turned down the renowned Parsons at the New School in New York City, for an English Literature degree from her local University of British Columbia. Thankfully, Aileen returned to fashion two years ago, when she was asked to design a handbag collection, pushing her to pursue fashion career. After finishing her master’s degree in fashion management, she worked as a fashion editor and a freelance designer, eventually landing her first fashion designer position. For the Inspirare Competition, Aileen submitted her Mirage dress, inspired by trees and the “wisdoms associated with long living organisms,” from her “Castle in the Air” collection, her vision of a utopia. The dress reflects “an enduring dream that departs from the lust of momentary amusements, a continuous mirage that connects severed links in our fragmented information age. A gentle slit down the front unveils the mystic path to the heart of [her] design.” With such amazing design talent, it is easy to see her visions come to life.

Morgan Truong Morgan Truong has been a part of the Inspirare family since the beginning. Before winning third place in our Inspirare Design Competition, Morgan interned here at Inspirare as a Technical Designer, while studying Fashion Design at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco. As a designer she has made it her goal to keep her designs environmentally and socially ethical, while staying figure flattering and chic. Morgan often looks to overlooked or under appreciated themes as inspiration. In past collections, she has been inspired by garment factories and sewing machines, adding that “it’s very interesting to use the garment-making process as an inspiration because it is so close and direct to every designer.” We love Morgan’s moral platform, as it is truly the future of fashion, making all of us fashionistas reconsider and revamp the role of fashion in the world. 124

Christos Garkinos:
CELEBRITY CORNER
A Duke of All Things Fashion Christos is a humble and gentle heart. This is a lot to say about a person who could so easily be the opposite of that. To be kind when you are surrounded by fashion riches that the majority of us can only dream of, says so much about what kind of person Christos Garkinos is. Sitting with him, in the incredibly intimate location of a dressing room, at the iconic San Francisco Union Square Macy’s gave me the wonderful opportunity to learn a little bit more about the man beyond the reality show character. For all of you non-Bravo fanatics, Christos is co-owner of an incredibly popular vintage couture boutique by the name of Decades. With their location in the heart of celebrity fashion, Melrose Avenue, they dress some of the biggest and best in spectacular one-of-a-kind items that have come from some of the world’s biggest celebrities closets. Just wrapping their first season of Dukes of Melrose, Christos now had a few extra moments to share with me, and all of our Inspirare Magazine readers, exactly what created the man beneath the Tom Ford suit. Christos was interested in fashion at a very young age; firstly, influenced by his father who himself was a fashionable Greek man and caring parent that carefully took the time to help 127
Christos tie his tie every single Sunday before church. Secondly, he became enthralled with clothes as a boy when he found himself noticing fashion on some exemplary beauties such as Maria Callas and Sophia Loren. Christos’ number one inspiration in his personal fashion choices is no secret. He rocks the Tom Ford suit as often as possible, and if he had to pick one designer to wear for the rest of his life it would be Tom. Christos also harkened back to the day of his first three piece suit purchase at the Neiman’s in Detroit with definite fondness. A self described Anglophile, there is no doubt that ‘dapper’ always plays into his personal style choice. His advice for women’s style is sought out by
women from many walks of life. He believes the piece every woman should have in her closet is a cropped leather jacket, and I concur. Being Greek, he gravitates to all things color and encourages women to do so in their wardrobe as well. A favorite color of his is hunter green, which he also mentioned I would look beautiful in (blushes). I’d probably buy a K-Mart brand shirt for thousands of dollars from him if he said I would look good in it. Surrounded by a life of celebrity, it is no wonder he too wound up in front of the camera. His favorite client is a friend for over 15 years, and he says Selma Blair’s name with a smile upon his face. The wonder of being able to pick through these starlets closet is beyond intriguing. The craziest thing he said he ever saw while collecting for the boutique was
Courtney Love’s stripper shoes, but I can imagine that list is longer than he shares. A gentleman to the end. Decades is a whirlwind of exciting. Each time I push play on the dvr for another episode of The Dukes of Melrose, I know it is going to be great. Christos tells me his advice for any of you out there wanting to get involved in fashion retail is to “develop deep breathing techniques” because at Decades “every day is theatre.” But, that isn’t surprising to those of us that live in the world of fashion... isn’t that why we love it so? When asked to tell us something no one else knows, and that we couldn’t find on the internet, Christos humorously told me, “I wear a size 12 shoe, sometimes a 13.” So, now you can walk away from this article with a special little secret directly from the mouth of the man himself. 128
