T
he way color impacts us can be rather subtle or it can hit us like the proverbial ton of bricks. My daughter and her husband, who have since moved back home to Fargo, had built a new beautiful home in Edmond, Oklahoma. I’ll never forget her phone call/ plea for help. All their walls had been painted a pleasant, unobtrusive shade of “safe.” She was not happy. Something was not quite right. Determined to define what that “something” was, she was committed to finding out. This quizzical situation meant one thing certain — a trip to the local paint store. It was there she made up her mind to bathe the entire great room in a robin’s-egg blue while her husband was away on a business trip. I received her excited phone call upon completion of the project, but it was tainted by the realization that she had picked the wrong color that left a cooler feel than what she had anticipated. It just didn’t “feel” right. After some emotional “regrouping,” a quick trip to the paint store resulted in expert advice and a new green under-toned tint added to her original paint created the color she had hoped for. It was calming, comforting and the space was made tranquil. Moral of the story? Color affects us daily, whether it is a calming shade in a dentist’s office or an invigorating, engaging color for a kindergarten classroom. Color has the power to involve, relax, entice, motivate and to clearly remind us of its importance in our daily lives. Enjoy our Color Issue!
